Traveling is ubiquitous in our lives. From day to day work commutes to going on a trip or vacation with our family or friends, we are constantly traveling. And we thank God that traveling has also been made easy. We can turn to many modes of transportation to bring us to our desired destinations. However, traveling still remains a stressful activity. We worry about safety, the sudden change in weather, missed flights, or lost luggage. The list of what can go wrong while traveling is endless and daunting. How and what can we do to deal when such a situation arises? We can turn to our God and say a quick prayer for safe travel. 

Biblical characters like Noah ( Genesis 7:1-24 ), Abraham ( Genesis 12:1-20 , Genesis 13:1-18 ), and Moses ( Exodus 4:18-31 ) have also embarked on several epic journeys. They would have fervently prayed for a safe journey and blessings. Similarly, we should also pray each time we go on a trip. I personally believe that prayer for safe travel is a powerful thing to do before any trip. By praying, we are inviting God and trusting Him that He will get us to our destination, safe and sound. Here are some short prayers for travel that we can pray before traveling. 

1. A Short Prayer for Safe Travel

Here is a short prayer for safe travel that you can say right before your trip.

Lord, I know that You watch my coming and going. Today, I pray for You to watch over me as I travel. Keep me safe in Your loving arms. Let no harm come upon me during my trip and cover me under Your mighty wings. As I step out and start on my journey, I will choose to trust you and not give in to fear. Help me get to my destination and get home safely. Help me to experience Your greatness and love during this trip so that I may draw even closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen. 

Psalm 121:7-8 The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.

2. Prayer for Travel Blessings to Have A Safe Flight

As we go on our trip, let us also ask the Lord for His blessing and favor so that our journey may be smooth and peaceful. Here is a short prayer we can lift to the Lord before a flight.

3. Prayer for Road Trip

Here is a prayer for safe driving and traveling. Let us seek the Lord’s protection before we go on a road trip so He can protect us and keep us safe while we’re on the road.

Lord, today I entrust You for your safety as we go on this road trip. I pray for an alert mind so that I may drive safely. Please sustain my strength during the long trip and bless me with steady hands. Grant in me patience and courtesy to the other drivers on the road, just as how You grant them with patience as well. May this be a smooth journey and no accidents will occur. Bless us, oh Lord, with Your grace and favor that we would enjoy this road trip and witness the wonderful creation that You’ve created with Your hands. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen. 

Psalm 23:3-4   He gives me new strength. He leads me on paths that are right for the good of His name. Even though I walk through a very dark valley, I will not be afraid, because you are will me. Your rod and your shepherd’s staff comfort me.

4. Prayer for Safety and Health Protection from Sickness During Travel

It is also good to pray for the Lord’s protection against any kind of sickness during travel to fully enjoy our trip.

Dear God, as we travel today, I pray that You bless us with Your protection against any kind of sickness during our trip. Bless us with Your mercy and grace that we may be kept in good health as we travel. May the people around us during this trip also be in good health. Protect us from any virus that can bring harm to our health. Give us wisdom to also exercise caution and good hygiene throughout this trip. May the foods that we consume throughout this trip be cleansed by You to provide us with the nutrition to protect our bodies, the holy temples of Yours.  All this I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen. 

Psalm 37:3 Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

5. Safe Travel Prayers for Friends and Loved Ones 

We can also bless our friends and loved ones with a prayer for safe travel before they embark on a trip. Here is a prayer that we can lift for a loved one’s safe journey before they travel. 

Dear Lord, today I surrender my loved one into Your hands. I ask that You bless him/her with a safe trip and cover him/her with Your protection. Shine Your face on him/her Lord, so that no harm come upon him/her and shower them with Your grace as they go. I pray that they would experience Your presence and Your peace during this trip that no trouble or mishap would come upon them. Keep them in good health and give them wisdom and alert mind throughout their journey. May they get to their destination safe and sound. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

6. Prayer for Family Protection and Harmony During Trip

It’s always good for us to say a prayer before any family trips for God’s protection to be upon us and our loved ones. 

Heavenly Father, I lift up my family to You today as we travel. I pray for You to watch over us and keep us from harm. Guide us and guard us during our trip and keep us out of any unforeseen danger. Protect us from any kind of sickness as well while we are traveling. Let there be harmony among us and may love and peace reign throughout this trip. Help us exercise patience and forgiveness towards each other that there would be no squabbles among us during this journey. May our journey be smooth and peaceful, and may we get to our destination safely. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

We can also bless families traveling with kids by praying for them that they would have a safe and stress-free journey.

Lord, today I lift my family to You. Cover us with Your protection and peace as we travel with our children today. Grant us as parents wisdom and patience as we take care of our kids during this trip. Let no harm nor sickness come upon anyone of us. I pray that this journey would be stress-free and enjoyable for every one of us. I pray that the children will be in good spirits and have great time during this trip. May our family arrive safely at our destination and our actions glorify Your name. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

8. Prayer for Someone Traveling Solo

Lord, I lift my friend to You today. Bless him/her with Your mercy and grace as he/she sets out on a trip. I pray that You would protect him/her from any harm and danger. May he/she would have a great time and that he/she take with him/her wonderful memories from this travel experience. Most importantly, I pray that he/she would find time to reconnect with You and gain valuable lessons as well. May this journey be a peaceful, fun, and relaxing time for him/her. Keep him/her safe until he/she reaches his/her destination. Guide him/her and give him/her wisdom and an alert mind, and let him/her not lose sight of You throughout this trip. Cover him/her with Your peace and surround him/her with Your presence that they would not be anxious during their trip. Thank You, Lord. Amen. 

Proverbs 3:21-23 My son, do not lose sight of these—keep sound wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble.

It’s good to seek the Lord through prayer for travel protection before we embark on a trip. It can help us be at peace and fully enjoy our trip knowing that He is covering us with His traveling mercies.

Jesus, we seek Your traveling mercies today before we go out on our journey. We lift up this prayer for a safe trip and we seek Your blessing and favor. We pray for good weather and may there be no sudden changes to it during our trip. We also pray for good health and may You keep us from all kinds of sickness or anything that could cause us to get sick during our travel. Cover us with Your grace and mercy so that we would have a safe and smooth journey. May You, oh God, bless our trip and meet our needs during this travel. Thank You, Jesus. Amen.

10. Prayer for Safe Voyage

As we embark on our trips, let us pray for a safe voyage and ask the Lord to guard you and no harm shall come to you.

Dear Lord, I thank you for the opportunity to travel and see the marvelous creation that You’ve so wonderfully created for us. As I embark on this voyage, I ask that You be with me every step of the way. God, You are King of Kings, the God of all gods. You calm the storms and quieten seas. I know that when You are with me, I have nothing to be afraid of and I know that this voyage will be a smooth one. Guard my heart Lord and deliver me from any evil and harm that may come my way. I ask that this vessel will make it to shore safely. Thank You Father for hearing this prayer of mine, Amen.

I love to travel and see this great big world that God created. My  Bible  is always within reach. Over the decades, I have compiled several Bible verses and prayers for safe travel.

So whether you are loading up the travel trailer or setting off to the far side of the sea on your next trip, keeping  God’s Word  close reduces travel anxiety. After all, the Spirit of the Lord goes with you!

Bible Verses to Read When Traveling

A psalm for traveling, scripture prayers for safe travel, short godly travel quotes.

My favorite travel moments happen when I connect what I see with the good news in  Scripture  verses. Scripture references often increase my own understanding of various locations, especially in a foreign country. Bible verses and prayers for safe travel put our hearts and minds at ease.

Here are some of my favorite travel Bible verses organized by category for easy reference. Remember, the Lord keeps you close at all times.

1. God’s Protection

You are never without God’s strong right hand and faithful presence. Such a beautiful truth strengthens a man’s heart and a woman’s steps to be brave!

1) Luke 4:10  – “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you carefully.” 2) Proverbs 3:23-24  – “Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” 3) Psalm 121:7-8  – “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” 4) Psalm 91:2, 4   – “This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust him. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.   Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day.”

2. Covenant of Peace

If you are traveling to a new place that is unfamiliar to you, your peace of mind may take a hit. You may not even speak the local language. The Apostle Paul certainly understood those challenges.

Again, Bible verses and prayers for safe travel calm anxiety. Let these words of the Lord find a hiding place in your heart.

5) Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)  – “Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” 6) John 14:27  – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” 7) Romans 12:18  – “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” 8) Ephesians 2:14  – “For He himself is our peace.” 9) Philippians 4:7  – “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” 10) Colossians 3:15  – “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” 11) 2 Thessalonians 3:16  – “Now may the Lord of  peace  himself give you  peace  at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.”

3. Good Success

How we define a travel “success” varies. I deem a trip successful when three criteria are met: 

• I saw new destinations in God’s creation;
• I met new people; and
• I learned many new things that gave me a greater appreciation of God and His hand over my life.

Regardless of how you define a successful trip, here are a few words to the faith and faithful to keep close.

12) Psalm 23:3  – “He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake.” 13) Proverbs 16:9  – “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” 14) Proverbs 3:3-5  – “Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.   So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.”

The Psalms in  God’s holy Word  contain extraordinary words of faith to guide believers. I keep Psalm 139 close at hand as I travel. When God is your comfort zone, the whole earth is your oyster. And that is no little thing!

15) Psalm 139:3-10 (NLT)  – “You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.   You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.   You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.   Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!   I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!   If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.   If I ride the wings of the dawn, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,   even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.” 16) Psalm 139:3-10 (ESV)  – “You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.   Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.   You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.   Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.   Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?   If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in the depths of the earth, you are there!   If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,   even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”

Praying daily keeps the  Word of God  and God’s love vibrant as you enjoy God’s creation where you travel. His Holy Spirit inside of you is the voice of the Lord directing you the right way.

17) Heavenly Father, thank you for the opportunity and joy to travel in this season of my life. You have kept me and my loved ones safe, and I am grateful. Allow me to cherish the life of every living thing on my journey and return me home safely. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. 18) Lord, I am traveling where You have opened the door. Erase any second thoughts and let me trust in You. I am safe with you. I do not travel alone for your hand is upon me. Your protection is divine. In front and behind You encircle my life. For I am yours, and you are mine. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. 19) O King of my heart, I travel knowing that the eyes of the Lord are upon me. Words of the faith You have given me are hidden in my heart. I pray that the glory of the Lord goes before me so that I can shine Your light wherever I go. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Reading is a huge part of traveling – especially in planes, cars, and trains. It is helpful to keep the Great Commission in mind all the days of your life as you travel.

God, sometimes flying makes me nervous. I know airplanes are safe, but still I worry. Please give me Your peace Help me remember that You are watching over the plane. Sometimes our travels are for happy celebrations such as a sibling’s wedding, and at other times for somber occasions such as a parents’ passing.

Sometimes, we travel for business purposes.

Like all prayers, when we pray for safe travels, we pray as God calls us to.  We can praise God and petition Him on our behalf and others.

God asks us to pray for all things, for all circumstances, and to come to Him for all our needs.

We know that prayer is powerful and we should pray for all things (without ceasing). But what are some ways to pray for a safe trip for yourself or a loved one?

We can pray for our own safe travel. And we can pray for the safe travel of others.

When we pray for safe travels, we are not just asking for physical protection, but also for guidance, clarity, and a smooth path ahead.

It’s an acknowledgment of the uncertainties and challenges that can arise during travel and a humble request for a shield against those potential adversities.

This act of reaching out in prayer can provide a sense of comfort, reducing anxiety and instilling a feeling of being cared for by a benevolent force.

In praying for someone who is traveling, we want to ask God to wrap His full armor around them during every step of the way to their destination.

In any endeavor we embark upon in life, we want God to protect us from any dangers that may come our way.

The one thing we have in common no matter the trip is the desire for it be safe. We want to arrive there well, enjoy out time at the location and arrive home safe and sound! 

And as a woman of faith I believe praying for ourselves and loved ones during travel is a powerful thing we can do. Prayer for God to Protect You While You Travel

The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in. From this time forth, and even forevermore. – Psalm 121:8 NKJV

Lord, thank you for the opportunity to be able to travel in this season. You have sustained me and my loved ones, and I am grateful. You say in Psalm 121:8 that you shall preserve my going out and coming in from this time forth and forevermore. 

Preserve my life, and get me to my destination and back home safely. I may not see the dangers along the way but I ask that you keep me away from them. Watch over my steps Lord. My life is in your hands, and I trust that you will keep me safe. 

In the mighty name of Jesus, amen and amen.

Prayer Asking For Angels To Help as You Travel

For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. – Psalm 91:11 NKJV

Lord, you never leave me without help, and I thank you for that. You always send your angels to help your children, and you deliver them from any trouble. 

You have promised me in Psalm 91:11 that you shall give your angels charge over me to keep me in all my ways. May your angels guard me and my family as we travel, and keep us out of any unforeseen danger. 

May your angels encamp around me throughout my trip, and deliver me from any harm that may be on my way. 

I also ask Lord that you would send your angels ahead of me. That they would make my trip smooth and full of your peace.

Prayer for God’s Presence on Your Journey

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV

Lord, you say in Deuteronomy 31:6 that I should be strong and courageous because you go with me wherever I go, and will never leave nor forsake me. May your presence be with me as I take this journey. 

I know that when you are with me I can rest because I am safe. Your presence gives me peace as I patiently wait to get to my destination. 

When the Israelites were in the wilderness for forty years, they never made a move unless they were sure that you were leading the way. Lead me as I travel, and let me experience the joy of being in your presence. 

Prayer for Wisdom and Protection While Driving

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. – James 1:5

Lord, I praise you for your divine wisdom that is superior to my human wisdom. You have instructed me to ask you for wisdom in James 1:5 with the promise that you will give it to me. Today I ask that you give me the wisdom I need as I drive on my trip. 

Help me drive safely, to keep focus, and to avoid any dangers that could happen on the road.  Show me which routes to avoid, and how to navigate any traffic along the way. 

I also, ask that you would protect my car Heavenly Father. That I would have no issues with my vehicle while driving and you would give me wisdom when and where I should stop to rest and get gas.

Prayer for a Safe Flight

Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings, – Psalm 17:8 NKJV

Heavenly Father, I ask that you would be with me as I go on this flight. I pray that you would protect me and everyone on the airplane. I ask for a peaceful flight with no weather issues or turbulence. 

Lord give me peace throughout the duration of the flight and help to put my trust in You. Hide me beneath your wing where no enemy can find me. (Psalm 17:8)

Prayer for Straightening Your Path During Travel

Every valley shall be exalted, And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight, And the rough places smooth – Isaiah 40:4

Lord, you know all the obstacles, dangers, detours, and delays along the path I will take to my destination. 

I ask that you straighten my path so that I may have a smooth journey. Raise every valley, make every mountain low, straighten all crooked places, and make the rough places smooth (Isaiah 40:4).

Redirect me if I need to use another route, and remove any obstacles before I get there. Keep me from trouble! Go ahead of me and clear the way so that I will arrive in good time. 

Prayer for Blessing for Safe Travel

Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways – Psalm 128:1 NKJV

Lord, as you watch over me during my time of travel, I ask that you would bless this trip. That every where I go, every person I interact would be a blessing to me and I would be blessing to them.  I thank you for your help during my journey.  

Prayers for Protect of Sickness While Traveling

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. – psalm 91:5-7 NKJV

Lord, as I set out to travel I ask for your protection over my body. Protect me from any form of sickness that would try to attack me and cause me harm. I pray that you would strengthen my immune system and help me avoid any food that could hurt me. 

I ask for your blood to cover me, Jesus that no type of infection, virus, or physical accident would come near me. That your hedge of protection would be round about me. Thank you Lord, that I don’t have to fear and that nothing shall come near me. (Psalm 91:7)

Bonus Travel Prayer: Prayer for Safe Travel for a Loved One (Prayer for Traveling Mercies)

*This prayer can be used for a family member or friend. 

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, – 1 Timothy 2:1 NKJV

Heavenly Father, I lift up (insert name) today. I ask for them to have a safe trip and that you would protect them as they travel. Set your angels to go before them and with them as they go. Let no harm come near them and give them the grace they need.

Lord, I also ask that they would seek you while they travel and that they would experience your presence during this time. Draw them close to you and give them peace.

Praying as you travel will give you the assurance of the Lord’s protection. Regardless of your mode of transport…airplane, boat, car, etc…  prayer is very important as you travel. 

You don’t know what dangers that could be ahead that you need God’s help to overcome. God always protects us even from dangers we don’t know about. He is a good God!

I encourage you to pray the Word of God because it is powerful in the spirit realm. Trust that God will always be with you along the way, because He is. He has a purpose for your life, and wants you to fulfill and complete the assignment He has set for you on earth.

Do you have a journey coming up? We need God’s grace, mercy, and protection when we travel. So, whether you’re traveling for work or leisure, alone or as a family, these 7 Powerful prayers for travel will help you trust God on your journey.

What the Bible says about traveling

In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, the Bible calls us to “pray without ceasing”. That means we should pray before our journeys, during the journey, and even thank God for arriving safely.

“And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.” Exodus 13:21 (NKJV)

We see that when the Israelites were on the journey from slavery in Egypt to the promised land Canaan, God was right there with them.   God’s presence and protection are important when we travel.

When we pray to God, He will light up our paths and show us what to do, and guide us on where to go. During the day, the Israelites had a pillar of cloud, and at night, a pillar of fire. This shows us that God knows exactly what we need on our journey.

Prayers for travel safety

We can’t rely on an airline, the pilot, or the driver to make sure we reach our destinations safely. Our faith should be in the Almighty God.

These prayers for traveling safely are based on words from the Bible. Praying scripture is an effective way of praying so God hears and answers us.

A lot can happen when on the journey and that can make us scared. But God wants us to overcome fear and put our faith in Him. When traveling it’s good to pray for protection against the schemes and plans of the enemy.

“Lord, we know we have a real enemy who is out to steal our joy and peace, destroy our families and kill us. But we also serve the all-powerful Jehovah.

We pray that no weapon fashioned against us shall prosper, in the mighty name of our Lord Jesus Christ. The devil has no power over me and us as a family. His evil plans to harm us will not succeed because we are protected by the Lord.

As we travel, we pray that we will enjoy the goodness of God in the land of the living for that is our heritage. We pray against any thoughts of fear on the journey. Fear of the unknown and fear of accidents or crashes are not going to have any room in our hearts and minds.

Rather we believe God will uphold us, strengthen us and help us on the way. We receive the amazing grace and peace of God to go with us on this journey.

Prayer for traveling mercies

Our God is merciful, gracious, and loving towards us as His children. When we travel, we should also remember to pray for travel mercies.

These Bible verses about mercy invite us to come to God’s throne in our times of need. God promises us that His goodness and mercy shall follow us always. This gives us confidence in our prayers.

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.” Psalm 23:6

Prayer for traveling on the road

When you’re traveling on the road, you need focus and patience. Other drivers can tend to frustrate you and spoil your mood. When the journey is long, you need strength to keep going and wisdom to rest when you need to.

If you’re traveling on the road with young kids, you need to learn how to be patient because kids can’t stand being in the same space for long.  Let’s pray.

If you are praying for safe travel always start your prayer with “thanks”! God is active in our lives whether we acknowledge Him or not, but He loves to hear our praise (through prayer, singing, or other areas of worship).

Starting a prayer with “thanks” also helps set the tone for the prayer. A prayer is give-and-take, so we shouldn’t only come to God when we want something (although you can pray about anything, anytime).

• Explain Your Situation (Confess Your Shortcomings)

If we are praying for health, safety, and stress during travel we are telling God that we can’t do it alone. We need His help and it’s important to tell God that we need Him. God is always there for us and willing to listen and to help!

If you know your family with experience challenges during travel, tell God your worries and He will provide.

• Ask For Guidance

Once you’ve shared your shortcomings, ask for guidance. God will provide guidance even if you don’t hear Him. You will see His work in you and He can make your trip more enjoyable.

Knowing that God is beside you during travel will put your mind and body at ease, not to mention it will help relax others on your flight.

• Focus On Others

It’s often the case in prayers that we focus on ourselves. After all, who doesn’t want to talk about themselves.

Once we begin thinking about others, we often stop worrying about what we are experiencing. In your prayer it’s helpful to ask God to provide perspective and to provide you with the opportunity to help others.

You are well aware the struggles that so many people have when flying. There is stress and anxiety that most of us experience and we come to You to ask for peace.

My pet cannot understand the concept of travel and I am not able to communicate with them. Be with my pet and give them peace during the flight. They might be in a crate or they may be kept in a bag. Allow them to rest in whatever method they are on the plane.
