GRiZ is the stage name of Grant Kwiecinski, an electronica producer hailing from Detroit who was born in 1990. He became one of the hottest names on the Detroit EDM scene with his blend of futuristic electronic sounds and live instruments playing earthy funk, classic soul and smooth jazz.

No matter how many Skrillex records they might claim to like, never trust a rock fan who thinks that EDM artists are intrinsically less musically talented than any other kind of artist. The easy joke to make seems to be that all an electronica artist has to do to make music is push a space bar and sample other records. However, what they don’t know is that the best EDM producers are nearly always the ones who can play every instrument under the sun and have an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of music theory. These folks are far more common than one might think, with Grant Kwiecinski, A.K.A GRiZ being one of the best in a very long line of them.

Like many of these producers, Kwiecinski was classically trained from a young age. Unlike many others, he was classically trained as a saxophonist, an alto one to be precise. However, his aspirations changed dramatically when he was around 14, with the combination of discovering the likes of Squarepusher and Aphex Twin, and getting his first copy of the music software Fruity Loops. His calling shifted from the concert hall to the club, and he set about combining every influence he had, from the jazz and funk he’d play on his sax to his newfound love of EDM.

By 2011 he’d put out his first album, “End Of The World Party” and with his energetic live show that combines live sax, guitar and vocals with laptop backing tracks, he became a riotous festival mainstay. Coachella, Electric Forest and Lollapalooza have all seen him play to packed out tents full of revellers and the party is just getting bigger. His subsequent albums “Mad Liberation” and “Rebel Era” were both released for free on the internet, and because of that he’s playing to a bigger audience than anyone else at his level has ever been able to play to.

He’s an artist carving out his own path and making his own history with every release and every live show, and he’s only 24 years old. GRiZ in his prime is going to be an absolutely astounding sight and sound, and we should all be around to see it. Highly recommended.

Live reviews

When I walked into Mad Decent Block Party earlier than I expected, my hopes weren't very high for the opening acts that I had never heard of. However, after picking up my VIP poster and making my way to the front of crowd, I was immediately drawn in by some of the grooviest saxophone playing I have ever heard. I had accidentally come face to face with Griz, an eclectic EDM artist who, with one performance, was soon to make his way to the top of my must see again list. It says a lot when you go into a concert never having heard of the artist, and come out with the songs stuck in our head prepared to Google him so you can get your hands on some more of his tunes. I was even more awestruck when I found his Rebel Era EP to be free, and I soon became almost addicted to listening to Feel the Love. I'll never forget tweeting about how that song made me feel, and having Griz retweet it. I was 'fangirling' for at least an hour after. I can't wait to see him live again, and I know his next performance will be just as unforgettable as the last.

As an individual with such a passion and immense amount of love for the world of people, music and good times, Grant has truly been an inspiration in my life. Your drive and belief that GOOD WILL PREVAIL is so essential in this time of difficult political and international unrest. Your message of spreading the peace, love and funk has sparked an electrifying flame in my soul. I wish to do that with my life. Inspire others to love and be present with each other and understand that together we will kick some ass as a beautiful united positive human race. So thank you Grant. Not only for your raw, uncut, absolutely earthquaking funky beats, but also for your message and passion to make this world a better place. Youre the man, Grant.

PEACE, LOVE + FUNK FOREVER.

P.S. Lets kick it some time when you're not too busy spreading those filthy funk frequencies on your world tour.

Griz music was amazing! I love the music, it hits so hard and scrambles my brain stupid. I can't help but dance to it. There was a bright shooting star that went over the night sky, was really incredible. One of my favorite songs of the night was his "Funky Town" remix, I danced with some random the people in the row above me. I was really impressed when Grant/GRiZ read some personal poem he write on some scratch paper. I gave him a standing ovation, and I yelled at my friends "EVERYONE OF YOU SHOULD BE CLAPPING". Overall it was excellent night, filled with awesome music, friends, and dancing. I hope he comes back next year!

GRiZ, as always, never ceases to put on anything short of a funkadelic dance party, this show being no exception. However, this show in particular was extra special considering we got too see him play some songs live with Lettuce. GRiZ seemed to have perfected his set list playing all of his different styles, from his electronically influenced songs to more of his funky songs accompanied by Lettuce. The dance party didn't stop for a second and was one of the funnest show's I've been too. Lettuce playing with GRiZ was one of the coolest musical experiences I have got too seen live.

I first want to start out by saying this wasn't my first time seeing Griz live. But I do Grizmas every year & he has down to a fucking science! Great openers leading into the awesome sax man who stands in front of his DJ booth! Also this for a sell out crowd, so of course the visuals were top notch! Also I was in a really friendly environment! Top quality music, top quality visuals & top quality people? I can safely say that it doesn't get much better than that!

First time at Culbert. Nice venue. The Funk Hunters did a great job warming up the crowd. Fantastic remixes of AC/DC, Funkadelic, Beatles, etc... I would see them as a lead act. Then there is Griz. He has very talented supporting cast including an amazing female vocalist. Had the crowd pumped and dancing the entire set. Last saw him in 2015 at WTFestival were he was solo. He sang and played saxophone and guitar. Go see him, you will not be disappointed.

Like many others when I arrived at Mad Decent Denver I had no real expectations. I was new to the EDM scene and seeing Griz was my moment of realization that this is where I belonged. The funky hard bass from Griz that night was amazing and made me want to see hime again! I attended Decadence NYE 2014 and got to see a GrizMatik/Big GrizMatik set. Not only see him, but if you see either Gramatik or Big Gigantic on the same bill. It's a must see no matter what.

The show was incredible. I had seen him 2 years ago at Hangout Music Festival 2015, and this was even better. He was able to create a performance like no one else. Great openers to start with, but when he finally came out, it was insane. His mixing skills along with the sax and a bass guitarist... legendary. I really cannot explain how great it was and the vibes were insane from the second you step in the place.

wld0007’s profile image

Absolutely unbelievable show. Epically-choreographed lighting, incredible sax and guitar instrumentals, banging beats, and a positive vibe. Really good crowd too -- everyone was really friendly. I don't usually like his ultra-dubsteppy stuff, but he slowly built up to it throughout the show, and then when it came on, I was dancing like crazy. I will definitely see him next time he comes to the Bay.

GRiZ was AMAZING! I was originally in New Orleans for the Greta Van Fleet concert that got cancelled last minute. I got to go to this show the next day and it made my whole trip! I saw him one other time at Bonarroo 2019 and loved his sound and lively performance. The venue was really awesome and I had a wonderful time.

GRiZ’s ‘Ride Waves’ Tour Showcases A Technicolor Performance [EVENT REVIEW]

griz edm tour

After two seasons of performances, GRiZ’s Ride Waves tour has finally come to a close. Grant Kwiecinski , better known by his stage name GRiZ , has been deep in the music scene since 2011. Talented not only on the decks, but also with the saxophone, the Michigan-born artist has rooted a unique sound. Over the years, the DJ has expanded his musical horizon and has been producing a wide array of music, including hip-hop, electronica, funk, and dubstep. His most recent project, Ride Waves , was yet another successful attempt to blur genre lines in the music scene.

The month of May welcomed Season 1 of his tour to cities along the East Coast and Midwest. Fan feedback was extremely positive, and GRiZ announced Season 2 to showcase his performance even further across the nation, including the West Coast. We had the honor of seeing his tour at none other than the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angele s . The performance was everything we expected and more. Here’s our review.

Los Angeles is the place to be when it comes to making it in music. There are countless venues where one could perform, but it’s places like the Hollywood Palladium where an artist can know that they’ve made it.

The venue offers a lot of room, making it easy to maneuver around the dancefloor. There’s a second story, but each side has a different use. As you enter, the right side is reserved for VIP viewing, whereas the left side leads to the outside balcony area. The outside lighting creates such a nice ambiance, and you can still hear the music from inside. Smoking is allowed out here, and there’s another bar so you can buy drinks.

The circular arena made for the perfect venue for GRiZ’s performance. The venue’s shape really enhanced the experience because the lasers were bouncing off the walls. You could tell the amount of effort that went into the visual production because the technicolor performance lit up the whole crowd.

The Funk Hunters have opened every single show for Season 2 of GRiZ’s Ride Waves tour. Based in Vancouver, Canada, the DJ duo plays a wide variety of music, but are known predominately for their glitch-hop beats. They play a similar style to GRiZ, making them the perfect opener to his show. In Los Angeles, they got the crowd going with their signature feel-good funk. However, they weren’t afraid to throw in some harder beats either. Their performance set the stage for a great night and was also a good reminder that the future of funk is bright.

A massive thank you to these lovely humans @thefunkhunters . They opened up all the shows on ride waves szn 2 & absolutely crushed it. Give em a follow and check out their tunes if you’re not familiar! Miss you both so mucho 💖 pic.twitter.com/pYbIMBo9St — GRiZ ☯️💖 (@Griz) October 29, 2019

A little backstory: I had a friend tell me she drove five hours to Eugene, Oregon, after seeing his performance in Seattle, Washington. Being a fan, I was already excited for GRiZ’s performance; however, after hearing that, I think anyone would have high expectations. And let me tell ya, he definitely did not disappoint.

GRiZ and his team created a show with top-notch musical and visual production, to the point where it actually felt like a cinematic experience. He brought out singers, trumpet players, and, of course, his saxophone. (Because, let’s be real: would it really be a GRiZ performance if he didn’t bring out his trusted sax?) In addition, the technicolor lasers were beyond incredible, making it one of my favorite visual shows ever. Watching from any part of the room made for a visually stimulating experience, and you couldn’t help but smile when looking at all the various colors.

GRiZ opened up the night with his saxophone and his trumpet players aiding him with the music. Throughout the show, GRiZ performed songs on his Ride Waves album as well as his three-part Bangers EP, which released just before the start of his tour. He played his popular collaboration with Subtronics, ‘Griztronics’ , hyping the crowd up with some dubstep. Later, he performed his collaboration with DRAM , ‘It Gets Better’ , which radiated good energy into the audience. Probably my favorite moment was his performance of ‘Caught Up’ , with all the colorful lasers shining across the crowd. All in all, the veteran DJ gave us the perfect mixture of electro and funk. You could see the heart and soul that he gave us throughout his performance, and the crowd was right there with him.

So, if I could describe GRiZ’s performance in one word, I would have to say magical. He not only gave us a good show, but he also created a magical and positive vibe. In today’s world, that’s all we can ask for nowadays.

Thanks for the good vibes, GRiZ! Until next time.

☯️ RIDE WAVES TOUR IS OVER. YOUR ENERGY MAKES DREAMS REAL. I FKN LOVE YOU, THANK YOU. ☯️ pic.twitter.com/nqlPnSpLG5 — GRiZ ☯️💖 (@Griz) October 31, 2019

Alpine Valley Music Theatre hosting first EDM fest, with Griz, in the venue's busiest season in 19 years

griz edm tour

It's official as of Tuesday:  Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy will have its busiest summer of concerts in 19 years.

And the Live Nation-operated amphitheater is hitting the milestone booking something that hasn't been held at the 45-year-old venue: an EDM festival.

Sax-playing electronic artist Griz, familiar to Milwaukee audiences with shows at the Rave and Wisconsin Center over the years, announced Tuesday he is hosting his two-day Triple Rainbow festival at Alpine Valley Sept. 16 and 17.

Camping passes will also be available — $299 for a standard site (up to six people), $499 for an RV campsite (also for up to six).  The Walworth County Zoning Agency approved camping  for up to 3,324 people in 2016, but it's rarely been utilized.

Griz will headline both nights and play different sets. Night one will also include EDM acts LSDream, Tripp St., Eazybaked and Noah B, while night two will feature Clozee, Minnesota, Chee and Tape B.

Presales begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday through livenation.com , with tickets for the general public going on sale at 10 a.m. Friday.

Prices have not been announced for tickets, but two-day passes will also be available. All concertgoers must be at least 17 years old, according to the event page on Live Nation's website.

With the Triple Rainbow announcement, Alpine Valley will have at least 10 shows this summer, the most since 2003, when it also held 10 shows.

Slipknot is scheduled to play the venue's first show since 2019 with its Knotfest Roadshow June 4. Other Alpine shows this year include Alpine regulars Dave Matthews Band (July 2 and 3), Jimmy Buffett (July 23) and Phish (Aug. 12 to 14), while the reunited Rage Against The Machine are slated to play their first show since 2011 at Alpine Valley July 9.

One of the most popular outdoor venues in the country in the '80s — the Grateful Dead played there 20 times that decade, and 1989 alone also saw shows with the Rolling Stones, Metallica and the Who — show numbers at Alpine started noticeably declining in the 2000s. In 2017, the venue's 40th year, Live Nation couldn't book a single act, remaining closed for an entire summer for the first time. In 2018 Alpine hosted five shows, and nine in 2019, including Farm Aid, before closing in 2020 and 2021 because of COVID-19.

Stiff competition from Chicago for outdoor concerts is a leading factor in Alpine's declining business, but for the first full summer of concerts since the pandemic began, there'll be plenty of big outdoor business to go around in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee World Festival Inc.'s American Family Insurance Amphitheater — which reopened last year after a $51.3 million renovation — is expected to host 22 concerts in 2022, including nine at Summerfest, according to Milwaukee World Festival's calendar of events. That will make it the 35-year-old venue's busiest season in at least 18 years. Madison-based FPC Live is the exclusive promoter of the venue outside of Summerfest, and Live Nation owns a controlling stake in FPC Live's parent company Frank Productions.

The Milwaukee Brewers stadium, American Family Field, will also host its first concerts since 2019. Three are scheduled so far for this year: Kenny Chesney with Dan + Shay, Old Dominion and Carly Pearce May 14; Eric Church with Brothers Osborne and Parker McCollum May 28; and Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts July 17.
