Approximately 2-hour trail where you can enjoy the fantastic views over the Douro river valley in the Pinhão area. Those more connected to cameras may need a little more hehe. In this walking tour, I'd also highlight the typical gastronomy of the region with which we were presented at the end of the hike and the visit to one of Sandeman's emblematic farms, Quinta do Seixo. Many thanks to our guide Daniel, who in an enthusiastic and fun way transmitted us the local culture and provided a fantastic day among friends and family.

Amazing sights, good food, and great company

So glad we picked them to guide us on our family’s first walking tour in Portugal. Daniel was not only a foodie like us, it was like having a friend hike with us and help us get acquainted with the Portuguese culture and people. His easygoing nature and knowledge of the hikes made it so enjoyable, from the picnic with wine, sausages and bread to the delicious dinner at a winery. If you want a more intimate hiking experience without the quirks of too many strangers, I highly recommend them for a hiking tour!

HIKING TOURS IN PORTUGAL

Portugal is a country with a deep history, lively culture, and some of the most stunning seaside terrain in the world. low lying granite mountains and white-sand beaches stretch along the length of the iberian peninsula..

The urban centers of Portugal – Lisbon, and Porto – are a pair of immensely vibrant cities that balance a unique tourist culture with the local bohemian lifestyle . Every day in Portugal feels like a celebration of the nation’s unique lifestyle. While Portugal itself might be adjacent to central Europe, the Iberian peninsula feels as though it is a continent all of its own. In the southern regions of Portugal, people gather to enjoy a maritime lifestyle, while the middle region is defined by vineyards which cover entire valleys and deep eucalyptus forests, and finally, the remote north has only a spattering of isolated and traditional villages hidden amongst its granite hills .

Ryder-Walker’s first foray into Portugal explores the Southwestern coastal region of Portugal where the Portuguese young wine, Vinho Verde , is produced, with coastal paths that have been traveled by pilgrims for hundreds of years. The Southwestern Scenic Coastal Trek , which we offer as both a guided and self guided tour, follows a historic fisherman’s trail from the Iberian jewel of Porto Corvo to the wild beaches of Odeceixe. As you explore the winding coastal paths most days will also offer the unique experience to finish a long hiking day relaxing in the cobalt ocean water.

Portugal represents a cultural fusion that is a product of the country’s post-colonial history . While traveling throughout Portugal you will notice multiple regal relics to Portugal’s colonial era where the exploration of the Americas brought a stream of gold and international recognition to the maritime nation. Subsequently, the colonization of China would bring an infusion of shared culture which is most noticeable with the Portuguese language: to a layman, Portuguese looks quite a bit like anglicized Chinese, because the Portuguese were among the first to begin translating Chinese characters to Western script. The connection with Latin America results in a similar shared cultural influence. Often when exploring the most remote stretches of Portugal it feels almost as though you were visiting the European equivalent of Central America. Today, Portugal boasts a truly amazing food culture, which draws inspiration from Spanish tapas and French cooking techniques , with a special focus on the unique Portuguese pastry and cafe culture. Beyond this, Portugal offers one of the most lively urban environments on the continent, with the main cities of Lisbon and Porto offering vibrant art scenes, student centers, and dozens of museums filled with treasures from around the world. .

Whether you are looking for a truly different European experience or a luxurious romp along the glittering Iberian Coast , The Southwestern Scenic Coastal Trek offers something truly unique to Ryder-Walker’s roster of tours. Portugal enchanted us from the moment we stepped foot on its sandy shores, and we are confident that anyone who has overlooked Portugal as a destination up to this point will be amazed at the time they have missed exploring a region with as much heart as Portugal.

Discover Portugal's best walking tours with our affordable self guided & guided holidays.

Douro Rambler Tour

Vineyards above the Douro Valley

The Douro Rambler tour is one of the most popular walking trips in Portugal, and it's easy to see why. This is a 7 day self guided hike of introductory to moderate grade.

The Douro Valley is the first demarcated wine region in the world, officially established in 1756 when the Port industry developed. Today it has the country’s highest wine classification as a ‘denominação de origem controlada’, while the viticultural zone, which covers the steep slopes along the banks of the lower reaches of the Douro River, is designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. While visiting the region there are plenty of opportunities for scenic boat trips, wine tasting tours and visits to port lodges and small working wine estates.

Madeira Island Walking Trip

Trekking the Pico Ruivo Circuit | Tali Emdin

Rising steeply from the Atlantic Ocean off the coasts of Europe and Africa, Madeira offers both a mild climate and a 1,350-mile network of ‘levadas’. The island enjoys an impressive year-round flowering season thanks to its subtropical climate and rich volcanic soil – you can even find a dedicated Orchid Garden with more than 7,500 species!

One of the highlights of the Madeira Island Walking holiday is to climb up to Pico Ruivo, the island’s highest peak; many of the ‘levadas’ can be followed on foot, which together with a network of local trails make even the most remote parts of the island accessible.

Portuguese Road: Porto to Santiago Camino

Countryside of Portugal along the Portuguese Camino tour | Jaclyn Lofts

Walk the final stage of the Portuguese Camino and enjoy the marvellous landscapes of northern Portugal and Spain as you follow the way to Santiago de Compostela.

Crossing the Spanish border and walking the last 100kms through Galicia to the holy city of Santiago ensures you qualify for the Compostela certificate upon your arrival at the cathedral.

Portugal Palaces and Coast Walk

Hiker sightseeing at the Pena Palace in Sintra | Linda Murden

Set amidst pine-blanketed hills, Sintra looks as if it has been plucked straight from a fairytale book. It is Europe’s finest example of whimsical and colourful Romanticism architecture, home to flamboyant palaces, mansions and gardens. Traverse on foot the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park to the rugged and dramatic coastline – dotted with fishing villages and sandy beaches – for views of the so-called ‘Hell’s Mouth’ and Cabo da Roca, continental Europe’s westernmost point. The trip finishes at Cascais, one of the most popular holiday destinations on Lisbon’s coastline.

The Portugal Palaces and Coast Walk is an 8 day, self guided hike of introductory to moderate grading. Add it to the list!

Rota Vicentina: the Fishermen's Trail

Walking the Fishermen's Trail part of the Rota Vicentina | John Millen

Part of the Rota Vicentina long-distance footpath, the Fishermen’s Trail , in Portugal’s Alentejo region, follows the coast from the idyllic beaches of Odeceixe to the traditional village of Porto Covo, which is perched on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. During the day you will only come across a handful of other hikers, while at night you can indulge in typical Portuguese cuisine.

This coastal tour takes you from the fishing town of Porto Covo to Odeceixe over 7 days and showcases a unique side of Portugal.

Best of the Portuguese Way Guided Tour

Portuguese Camino sign showing the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain | Jaclyn Lofts

For many pilgrims, the Portuguese Way is more spiritually connected to the Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James) than any other religious route: not only is Portugal where he was known to have first preached but his final journey to Santiago, when his bones were brought back from Jerusalem following his beheading, is also believed to have been via the country.

Extending from capital Lisbon across the border to Santiago, the 10 day Best of the Portuguese Way guided walk takes in some of the most popular and intriguing sections of The Portuguese Way. Visit the quintessentially Portuguese cities of Coimbra and Porto and enjoy local wine tastings before crossing by ferry the border with Galicia in Spain. The trip culminates with a special farewell dinner at Santiago de Compostela.

Rota Vicentina: to the Algarve

Hikers in Portugal enjoying the views along the Rota Vicentina | John Millen

This section of the Rota Vicenta follows the trail south from Odeceixe to Cape St Vincent and a section of the Fishermen's trail. Experience the renowned beauty of the Algarve coastline well away from the tourist areas on this inspiring walk along enchanting sections of the Atlantic coast. As you make your way towards the south-western most point on the European continent by foot you'll pass idyllic beaches, sand dunes and dramatic steep cliffs that see surprisingly few visitors compared to the busier resort based beaches.

Portuguese Road: Porto to Tui Camino

The colourful buildings of Porto | Pat Rochon

The Porto to Tui section of the Portuguese Camino is a pretty good walk, to put it mildly. Hear what this UTracks Traveller had to say about their experience:

"Did self-guided walk in Jan/Feb and liked the uncrowded paths and friendly hospitality at the hotels who were pleased to have guests. Very easy to navigate as entire walk is marked with yellow arrows. The cooler weather was great for walking but also mean rain gear was essential and well used...Overall very impressed with UTracks organisation once again and would do more such walks." S. Coley, Australia.

Portuguese Road: Coastal Way to Santiago

Enjoying a quiet stage of the Portuguese Camino along Portugal's coast.

This Camino tour follows a coastal path on the way to the holy city of Santiago in Spain. Start in Viana do Castelo, near Porto, and ramble through small hamlets and forests.

This is a 12 day self guided walk of moderate grade and highlights include the regional culinary specialties and a quieter pilgrim path.

The Full Portuguese Camino

Porto harbour in Portugal | Jaclyn Lofts

To cap off this list of the 10 best hiking tours in Portugal, what better experience is there than to do a tail to head walk of the country? On the Full Portuguese Camino tour , you'll journey from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela in Spain over 32 days.

This is an excellent tour for those wanting to fully immerse themselves in the culture and lifestyle of the Portuguese people.

Portugal Coastal Hiking Tour

Portugal Coastal Hiking Tour

 • What's Included
 • Delicious Meals
 • Great Hotels

Set out on an incredible 6 days of hiking along Portugal’s sun-drenched southwestern Atlantic coast.

From the rich culture of Lisbon to the sparkling white villages of Algarve, take a turn through one of the best preserved coastlines in all of Europe. Hike to quaint towns, rocky seascapes and unspoiled beaches along our journey. Beginning near Lisbon in romantic Sintra, where forested hillsides give way to white sandy beaches, we hike by centuries-old castles and palaces. The scenery can only be described as absolutely quintessential. Savor the fresh, salty air and indulge in traditional southern European cuisine. Tour through inviting plazas and savor quiet conversation in a charming café. Explore jumbled rocks along vast stretches of shoreline. We find the end of our route in Sagres. This bluff, once thought to be the end of the world, is where ships departed from the sailing school of Prince Henry the Navigator in a quest to discover far-off lands. Take in the beauty of the shoreline before we ourselves depart home.

Trip Highlights

 • From Sintra to Sagres, discover Europe’s best preserved coastline.
 • Hike the finest sections of famed Rota Vicentina—the Fisherman’s Trail.
 • Absorb Portugal’s heritage visiting historic sites built by conquerors and kings.
 • Delight in fresh local cuisine—seafood, homemade cheese and Alentejo wines.

Activities – Hiking

This trip can be rated Easy Active [2] by doing the standard walks or Moderate [3] by continuing and doing the optional parts of the hikes as well.

Easy Active [2]. Trip members should be capable of walking up to 3 hours (up to 4 miles) on consecutive days. Hikes may include trails with some loose dirt, rocks, sand and stone stairs of variable height, and sections with some ascents and descents. Elevation gain/loss is minimal on this trip.

Moderate [3]. The first three days are a mix of culture and hiking; the last three days are dedicated to hiking and exploring nature. Days are full and you should anticipate rising early and retiring for the evening after 9pm. The daily hikes range from 2.5–10 miles (4–6 hours). The terrain will vary and includes forested trails, grassy lanes, dirt pathways and sandy beaches. It is important to note there will be uneven, rocky, steep and/or hilly sections, and some trail sections have areas of exposure. Hiking in sand is more strenuous than hiking on dirt trails; likewise hiking in very warm weather can make the hills feel more strenuous. The better shape you are in, the more you’ll be able to enjoy all that ruggedly beautiful Portuguese Coast has to offer!

Hike to Guincho beach and the Cresmina Dunes from Peninha Sanctuary.

Our trip begins in Lisbon, Portugal with a 9am group rendezvous. A short drive brings us to the dramatic Peninha Sanctuary. According to local legend, the 17th-century chapel was built after the Virgin Mary appeared to a hermit. We begin our hike here or in the village of Biscaia, heading downhill on trails to Guincho beach and then onwards to Cresmina Dunes Nature Center for lunch. The views, not the exertion, will render us breathless! Our next stop is Cascais to check into our hotel and freshen up before dinner. Lunch and dinner included.

Hiking: 6 miles; terrain: some rocky sections. Driving: 1h15 min

Hike to Cabo da Roca, stroll the streets of Cascais.

At Praia Grande Beach we hike on trails hidden among the coastal flora to Cabo da Roca, the western-most point of continental Europe. From the windswept landscape of this historic Cape we marvel at views of the wild Atlantic and local fisherman perched on the cliffs ready to hook their day’s catch. After lunching on local specialties in Azoia we head to the quiet and green of Capuchos Convent nestled in the forest. Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a wide diversity of landscapes including mountains, forests, lakes, sand dunes, and a rugged coastline with high cliffs interspersed between lovely beaches. Transferring to the seaside village of Cascais, we’ll check in to our hotel in the 15th c. citadel overlooking the bay, the lighthouse and the old town. Breakfast and lunch included. Dinner on your own.

Hiking: 5 miles; Terrain: some steep, rocky sections on ascents and descents; City walk: 1 mile; Driving: 1h25 min

Visit an Azulejo tile workshop, then hike along Rota Moinhos for panoramic views.

We stretch our legs with a boardwalk stroll from Cascais to Estoril before transferring south of Lisbon over the Tejo River. We visit a tile workshop to discover the five-centuries-old tradition of Azujelo painted ceramic tile work; these decorative tiles are found everywhere from churches and palaces to ordinary homes and railway stations. There is free time for lunch in town before beginning our hike along a portion of the Rota Moinhos (“Windmills Path”) in the Arrábida Natural Park. The trail, named for the traditional windmills along the path, offers panoramic views of the region’s mountain ranges, Palmela Castle and the Tejo River estuary. Tonight we stay in the whitewashed village of Vila Nova de Milfontes, at the Mira River estuary and dine at a favorite restaurant. Breakfast and dinner included.

Hiking: 2.4 miles; Terrain: mostly rolling with an initial steep ascent; Driving: 3.5 hours

The famous Rota Vicentina leads us to the coastal village of Almograve.

We begin with a short crossing of the Mira River in a traditional Moliceiro boat. We hike from Praia das Furnas to Almograve, a quiet coastal village blessed with two distinctive beaches. The northern Almograve beach is spread over gentle sand dunes, while the southern beach has dramatic black shale rocks jutting from the steep cliffs. We enjoy a picnic lunch that includes famous local cheeses. This afternoon, trip members can choose to transfer to our lodgings or opt to continue hiking. The optional hike brings us to Cabo Sardão, where storks nest on the cliffs above the Atlantic. Overnight for the second night in Vila Nova de Milifontes. Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner on your own.

Hiking: 6 miles; Terrain: mostly flat trails with some steeper up-and-down sections; Optional hike: 5 miles; Terrain: sandy trails

Hike to Ponta em Branco for stunning views of Odeceixe beach.

We continue our hike on coastal trails with sea breezes and sweeping views of the rugged coast. The jumbled geology of the sedimentary rock along this stretch of shoreline is evidence of the force of nature here. We are rewarded with an exceptional view of Odeceixe beach from Ponta em Branco (White summit). Hiking down to Odeceixe beach on the Seixe river delta, we take time to stroll the soft sands before heading to Sagres, on the southern Algarve coast where Henry the Navigator, a famed figure during the Age of Discoveries, walked along the cliffs in the 15th century and built a church and his home. Guests choosing to opt out part of today’s hike will enjoy the countryside views of Alentejo, with free time to explore the fishing village where we stop for lunch before transferring to Sagres. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Hiking: 8.5 miles; Terrain: sections of hard packed dirt trail and sandy trails; Driving: 1.5 hours

Our final hike along golden sand beaches and clifftops ends in Zavial.

Hiking : 5.6 miles; Terrain : hard-packed dirt trails and sandy beach sections.

From the rugged Algarve coast we return to Lisbon to say our goodbyes.

Our journey along Portugal’s wild Atlantic Coast comes to an end. Continue exploring the famed Algarve coast on your own, or transfer back to Lisbon with the guides for arrival at around 7pm. We provide a drop-off at the Lisbon airport and Lisboa Plaza hotel.

Driving: 3 hours

Although we do our very best to adhere to the schedule above, the itinerary is subject to change for numerous reasons beyond our control, including weather and terrain conditions.

Amazing vacation! This Spring I took a trip with Terracotta Journeys along the coast of Portugal, not really knowing what it would be like. Before the trip I was worried about the availability of showers after hiking. I needn’t have worried. All the accommodations, meals and logistics were first class. We finished every day in a very comfortable hotel. The meals were wonderful and, region by region, the guides showed us the local cuisine and wines. They were generous with both. The coast of Portugal is magnificent and left me with good memories of our walks. But what made the trip truly fantastic were the guides. They knew the history, culture, regional differences, geology, plants and birds. They took us on beautiful hikes and showed us how the parts we saw fit into the larger picture of coastal history and geology. Best of all was just hiking in their company. I can’t imagine a better trip. Thank you Manuel and Andre. I hope to see you both again. Phil Morgan

Wonderful hiking tour! Wonderful hiking tour (Portugal Coastal Hiking Tour). First rate guide, wonderful experience. Beautiful country and unlike a lot of other tours I have been on, the food is really good ! Dan Gottheimer

Walking in Portugal

Small group walking tours to portugal.

Here at Explore, we’re big believers that traveling on foot is one of the best ways to discover a destination, and Portugal is no exception. We offer small group walking tours in Portugal, graded from Easy through to Moderate and covering a range of terrains, from the islands of the Azores to the Levada trails of Madeira . Best hikes in Portugal

The Algarve Walking in the Algarve offers something for everyone. Inland, trails wind through rolling hills and pretty villages while the flatter eastern coastline is in stark contrast to the more dramatic, wilder west coast. Little known by tourists, the Via Algarviana stretches some 300km in the easternmost part and is characterised by traditional agricultural villages and farmland – a different Algarve altogether from the beautifully-preserved coastal Rota Vicentina path. The Azores The unspoiled archipelago of the Azores is characterised by volcanic landscapes, lush vegetation and charming fishing villages. Walk around a volcanic crater on Sao Miguel Island, explore the vineyards of Pico or spot whales and dolphins off the coast on our Azores Island Hopping trip. Madeira This lush volcanic island is known for its year-round climate, making it ideal for a walking break throughout the year. Discover the island’s levadas (a network of narrow irrigation channels) and coastal paths that overlook the dramatic Atlantic coastline.

What to expect on a walking tour in Portugal

guided hiking tours portugal

When is the best time to go walking in Portugal? The best times of year to visit Portugal are in spring and autumn, and this is particularly true for walking vacations. The climate is pleasantly warm outside of summer and so more comfortable for walking and exploring. There’ll still be plenty of sunshine, and you can swim in the still-warm sea, while the cooling Atlantic breezes mean it’s not too hot - perfect for hiking.

How challenging are walking vacations in Portugal? Our walking tours in Portugal are graded from easy through to moderate, and walks vary from three to six hours in a day. Landscapes and terrains are varied, from cobbled streets to ancient woodlands and coastal paths. Our small group trips all stop and regroup regularly, with plenty of rest breaks to take in the views along the way.

What will I eat on a Portugal hiking tour? Portugal is well known for its delicious cuisine. Dishes are typically hearty - ideal for fuelling a walking tour - and packed with fresh local ingredients. Food varies between different regions. In southern Portugal try cataplana , a flavoursome seafood stew cooked in a clam-shaped copper pot. The Azores are known for their seafood, particularly tuna, and traditional cozido (slow-cooked Portuguese hot pot), cooked in the volcanic fumeroles. In Lisbon, the custard tarts are a must. Throughout Portugal you'll find delicious wines, while in Madeira poncha is the cocktail to order, made from distilled sugar cane juice.

Where will I be staying on my Portugal walking tour? Our small group tours to Portugal stay in small comfortable hotels. Wherever possible we stay in locally-owned and run hotels, and always choose the best locations for exploring the area. On our Azores walking tour , accommodation on Horta Island is premium standard as is the centre-based accommodation on our Eastern Algarve trip . Elsewhere, accommodation is a comfortable standard throughout.

It was my first time using this company. Communication was good, booking and transfers smooth and questions answered promptly. Madeira is a beautiful place to visit for the outdoors and culture. Going in January and feeling the warm sunshine on my face, was uplifting. I met some lovely people on the trip and our tour guide Joao Camara was exceptional. He was helpful, encouraging, very knowledgeable and communicated well with everyone. Would definitely recommend this trip to anyone loving outdoor hiking in a group. Great ride, pedaling along the beach and through forests, many miles of which are bicycle path and board walk. The bicycle provided were perfect, lightweight, front suspension MTBs with provided large capacity handlebar bag. The ride was not overly taxing, although hillier as the days went on. The cafe stops were delightful. Historic and natural beauty surrounded us. Hotels and buffet breakfasts were perfect. • End your journey on a scenic Douro River boat cruise from Regua to Porto

Signs lead the way!

This self-guided walking tour begins in the city of Porto, set on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Douro River. Explore its old quarter, the Ribeira and its maze of narrow cobbled streets and beautiful plazas. On arrival at Porto Airport you will be transferred to your hotel. Depending on your time of arrival, you may wish to begin exploring today and have dinner in one of the many quayside restaurants.

legendaryhotel

Centrally located on Batalha Square, Legendary Porto Hotel is a 5-minute walk from São Bento Metro Station. The soundproofed rooms at Legendary Porto Hotel have new furnishings and blackout curtains. Each comes equipped with tea and coffee-making facilities and include a seating area with a sofa and a flat-screen TV. En suite bathrooms come with hairdryer.

Today you will take a scenic train ride to the Douro Valley, a World UNESCO Heritage Site. The train journey takes around 2.5 hours. However you have the flexibility to decide when to leave Porto as you may wish to explore more of this amazing city this morning. Marvel at the 14th century ramparts and the Sé Cathedral, which dates from the 12th and 13th centuries.

Your memorable train journey from Porto to the Douro Valley is a remarkable feat of engineering as there are 26 tunnels to go through and 30 bridges to cross. Pass through areas of outstanding natural beauty; vineyard-covered hillsides that stretch down to the banks of the Douro River. Upon arrival in Pinhão train station, you can take a taxi (payable locally) to your accommodation.

lbvhouse

The modern LBV House Hotel is in the centre of the Alto Douro wine region, enjoying a panoramic view over the Douro River.

The LBV House Hotel’s rooms are all modernly decorated and feature balconies overlooking the river or the slopes. All air-conditioned rooms and suites include a mini-bar, cable TV, and a private bathroom.

From the doorstep of your accommodation in Pinhao, you'll begin your walk to Vilarinho São Romão, absorbing the spectacular scenery of the Alto Douro Wine Region. This is a land of traditions and there is much evidence to suggest that wine production has been a livelihood here for more than two thousand years. It is the first wine region in the world that was demarcated and the harvest here is still as traditional as it used to be and still done by hand and foot (with the squashing of the grapes!)

As you walk up and over the hilly slopes you will pass through the village of Provosende, where you may rest and admire its old manor houses. You'll pass a small tavern or “tacsa” that has an interesting exhibition regarding the local wine production. Crossing the plateau, pass by more traditional wineries and villages before arriving at Vilarinho São Romão.

Total ascent/descent : 670m/151m

CasadasPipas

Located on the Quinta do Portal vineyard in the wine-producing Douro Valley, Casa das Pipas boasts fabulous views of vineyards and rolling green countryside. Enjoy the hotel's selection of fine wines at the Quinta do Portal's restaurant, as well as its outdoor swimming pool. This family-run vineyard is a producer of some of the finest Douro wines, Port Wines, fortified Moscatel wines and Olive Oil. Indulging in the food and wine at this fabulous wine hotel is an experience in itself.

After a traditional breakfast, it's time to continue exploring the beautiful Douro region. Enjoy incredible views across the valley on your way towards the pretty village of Sabrosa, believed to be the birthplace of Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan), the great fifteenth-century Portuguese navigator and the first man to complete a circumnavigate voyage over the world - the ultimate proof that the earth was round.

Continue down the slopes to meet the river Pinhão, where an old bridge, dating from Roman times, awaits you. Then, you will reach the small village of Favaios. Taste its traditional wood oven-baked bread and its famous wine, the “favaios” and then, continue to the small historic town of Alijó. The highlight is the excellent regional gastronomy and the excellent wine from the region, especially the famous Moscatel de Favaios.

Total ascent/descent: 631m/627m

As this is the longest and hardest walk in the tour, a shorter 12km walk is available, via a short transfer to Sabrosa, where you'll begin the walk. It has less elevation, with 500m ascent.

pousada-alijo-exterior1

Warmly decorated rooms feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and minifridges; some have balconies. Complimentary amenities include a breakfast buffet, parking and an outdoor pool.

After walking back into Favaios and perhaps buying bread in a local bakery for a picnic lunch, you pass an iron settlement from the 1st century BC. It is worth paying a small fee to partake in some wine-tasting at Quinta de Avessada. This Quinta has been producing wine for at least a century and has an interactive museum that you may look around. This type of museum is the first of its kind in the country and is full of innovative activities that will surprise its visitors.

Following this visit and after walking through farmland, you will reach a wonderful view point where you can see hamlets perched on outcrops over the river and within the vineyards as you reach you final destination, Casal de Loivos.

Total ascent/descent: 245m/436m

casaldoloivos

A palatial residence from the 17th century, with 6 rooms, a big balcony and with a very unique view of the Douro river. Enjoy the panoramic pool (for guests’ exclusive use), a very welcoming living room with a fireplace, TV and various game tables. Wi-Fi is also available.

This morning you will walk from Casal de Loivos back to Pinhão (along a different route) with stunning views over the Douro River and beyond to the south, east and west. The scenery of vineyards and mountains carved out by rivers is indeed special and it is no wonder that this area has been designated a World UNESCO Heritage Site.

A short transfer will take you from Pinhão to Regua, where you will stay for the evening.

Total ascent/descent: 97m/434m

originaldourohotel

Imagine a century-old house, a few meters from the banks of the River Douro, side by side with an old and picturesque train station. A place that breathes history and where different generations meet, giving rise to a project with an eye on the future… Welcome to the Original Douro Hotel! This charming friendly hotel has an old tavern where wines, sausages, regional bread or jams, not to mention the good wines of the Douro are all served up in an intimate atmosphere.

This morning you will board your river boat for a peaceful all-day cruise down the Douro River, back to Porto. See the thousands of tiers of vine-lined terraces and the many small towns and settlements perched on the sloping hillsides. On a clear day this scenery is reflected in the waters of the river as you sail along. Many of these villages have retained their medieval simplicity with tiny communities clustered around historic churches, monasteries and castles. Cross 14 locks and descend over 35m at the various dams on this incredible journey. You will also enjoy lunch on board which includes local wine.

Later this afternoon you'll arrive in Porto and make your way to the hotel. As this city is renowned for its world class cuisine, perhaps you can seek out a great restaurant as a treat on your last night.

*Please note the River Cruise is only available from April through to October. If you are travelling outside these months, you will be transferred to Porto by car, stopping off for a visit to the Casa Mateus museum, an old manor from the 17th century with beautiful gardens.

The tour finishes after breakfast and an included transfer will take you back to Porto Airport for your journey home.

This trip has a carbon score of 12kg per person per night, meaning it’s one of our greenest trips! For comparison, a carbon count of 12kg is equivalent to 5 small bouquets of flowers (grown in the Netherlands). Here at Macs, we pride ourselves on being a responsible travel company and continue to adopt, develop and innovate ways to positively impact the environment. Find out more information about how we've carbon counted our trips .

Other Information

A really great aspect of this tour is that it combines spectacular walks through the timeless landscapes of the Douro Valley, including plenty of opportunities for tasting world-famous wines, with a legendary train journey and a wonderfully scenic boat cruise along the Douro River/Casa de Mateus Visit. The majority of the accommodations are in traditional guest houses set within the vineyards.

Slower Adventures | Where walking and cycling meet easy-going exploring, our Slower Adventures are the perfect combination. Most days are filled with picturesque journeys with some free time to dive into the destination and experience the people, local food and culture as you go.

Inn to Inn Walking | Walk from place-to-place changing accommodations each night. Generally staying in B&B’s, inns, and guesthouses.

Solo Travellers

This tour is suitable for most people that are in good physical condition. The daily distances are not that far, although you should be aware that there are some quite significant elevation gains through the local vineyard terraces in the Douro Valley. However, on some of the days, there is no walking at all to make way for scenic train and boat rides to and from Porto. As this is a self-guided walk you will be responsible for navigation, decision making and safety during your trip.

This route is suitable for most regular walkers of average fitness. You should train by walking some daily walks of similar daily distances to your planned itinerary.

Your 7 night, 8 day Porto & the Douro Valley self-guided walk in Portugal includes 7 nights in 4 & 3* hotels and guest houses set on wine estates. All of the hotels have been specifically chosen for their comfort and some also for their great locations with fabulous views over the Douro River and surrounding vineyards. A warm welcome is assured and some have swimming pools or gardens that you may wander through.

Alternative accommodation

During the high season, you might be booked into alternative accommodations which are not listed in the description. Any alternative accommodation will be of the same or better standard as those described.

Single Rooms & Solo Walkers

If you require single rooms within your party we would be happy to accommodate you although there is a single room supplement payable. Solo walkers are also welcome for an additional charge which is unfortunately quite high due to the high cost of the shared transfers not being split.

7 Breakfasts and 1 lunch on the Douro River Cruise are included. 1 Dinner is also included on Day 5. In Porto, you can eat dinner in one of the many restaurants and at the other locales (because they are rural areas) at the hotels. We recommend that you make reservations for dinner, especially at the quintas. We recommend trying the traditional and locally-sourced food, especially the fresh seafood in Porto which is simply delicious. For lunches, you can find local cheeses, meats and breads in local shops or markets, or the hotels may make you a packed lunch on request.

The route is way-marked in places and not in others. You will receive a booklet including a description of the route, a small pdf of the map and points of interest. For navigation, you will also have access to the Macs Adventure Smartphone App enabling you to follow the route using your phone's GPS so you will have no problems finding the way. You can simply download the GPX tracks to your phone for offline use and off you go!

You can begin your trip Monday-Saturday from January to June and then from September to December. Spring and autumn is the best time to visit the Douro Valley. In early March the trees of the almond groves start to blossom with delicate white flowers. While in mid to late September the grape harvest begins and the normally slow pace of life in the Douro Valley kicks up a gear. Please note that the Douro River Cruise cannot be guaranteed until May due to the water levels. May through to October sees full operation. A private transfer by car will replace the cruise should you travel outside the cruise season.

As the summer months can be extremely hot, making walking quite uncomfortable the departure dates are limited to spring, autumn and winter months. Please be aware that in the winter months some of the hotels and hotel restaurants may be closed however there will be options available in the local area and the accommodation you will stay in may not be exactly the same as that in the detailed itinerary however it will be of a similar standard.

Porto Airport is the nearest airport and is served by many airlines, such as Easyjet , Ryanair , KLM and British Airways . Porto is also accessible from Lisbon Airport.

From Lisbon Airport take an airport shuttle bus to the Santa Apolonia Train Station and then a train to Porto which takes around two and a half hours. Lisbon is also served by many airlines in the UK and from many other gateways in Europe

All transfers to and from Porto Airport (or to/from train or bus station in Porto)to the first and last hotels are included in the price.

Your bags will be transferred as per your itinerary. We request that you limit your luggage to 20kg per person and one bag per person.

At Macs Adventure, we work in partnership with many luggage transfer providers who set a limit on how many bags/suitcases they will transfer per person, and also the weight of the bag/suitcase. Your booking includes transfer of 1 bag per person. It is very important that you read the luggage information specific to your tour before departure. If you do not adhere to these limits, there is a great possibility that you will be charged locally both for extra bags or if they are too heavy. This limitation can be a challenge, especially as airlines generally have limits that are higher. However, our luggage providers have reasons for these limits (usually due to the Health and Safety of their employees), which we must respect.

The distances and ascent/descents are approximations of the recommended routes. Please note that for this tour, some ascents and descents can be more than what is stated on the itinerary, and is dependent on where your guesthouse is located.

Please be prepared by packing all necessary items. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, a day pack, sun hat, and sunscreen.

Our pre-departure information pack has detailed advice and a packing list on what to bring. This includes walking gear, hiking boots, rain gear, day pack and other specifics.

Please be prepared by packing all necessary items, for example, proper rain gear (jacket and trousers), sun hat and sunscreen. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, and a day pack.

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity, emergency evacuation and hospital care.

This tour is suitable for most people that are in good physical condition. Although the daily distances are not that far, it has been rated easy to moderate as there are some quite significant elevation gains through the local vineyard terraces in the Douro Valley. However on some of the days there is no walking at all to make way for scenic train and boat rides to and from Porto.

As the summer months can be extremely hot, making walking quite uncomfortable the departure dates are limited to spring and autumn months. In the spring there will be lots of wildflowers and in the autumn it is the grape harvest, so it will be a great time to be in this area.

We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as this area is extremely popular. You will find up to date availability on our website and we will always try and accommodate your plans so just ask.

You will need good walking shoes/boots, comfortable walking clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers, a daypack and hats/gloves etc. There is a more comprehensive list in your information pack.

Porto has an airport and is therefore the best airport to fly into as the tour starts and finishes here. On arrival in Porto Airport you will be picked up and transferred to your hotel. On departure you will need to make your own way to the airport, but since it is only 6 miles from the city centre and the metro goes there, it is easy to get to. You could also take a taxi which takes around 20 minutes and costs around €25.

You can use public transport or local taxis to continue to your next overnight stop, this is payable locally. Our local partners in Portugal, and/or your accommodation providers will be able to assist with this.

Self-guided walking holidays in Portugal

All of our walking holidays in Portugal include hand-picked accommodation, luggage transportation, detailed route notes and maps.

The most westerly country on mainland Europe, Portugal is renowned for its spectacular Atlantic coastline, with steep cliffs and stunning beaches. The Rota Vicentina follows the Atlantic Ocean for 110 km along the wildest, most unspoilt coastline in southern Europe. The pleasant sea breezes also help to keep temperatures in check, making Portugal’s west coast an ideal walking destination. For an easier coastal walk, our Algarve walking holiday offers pleasant and scenic hiking on Portugal’s south coast based in two comfortable hotels.

Closer to Lisbon, The Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais offers wonderful walking in a green oasis of forested mountains and fairy tale castles less than an hour from the capital.

The best time for hiking in Portugal is spring (April and May) or autumn (end of September and October), since summer can become stifling, especially in Alentejo and the Algarve. For winter hiking, the island of Madeira offers year-round sun and stunning hiking trails .

We went as a group of 6 (3 couples) to celebrate some big birthdays in our group! We had such a fun time hiking around the Douro and trying all of the wine and good food. All of us had different aspects that were highlights on this tour program, but no one had anything negative to share, other than maybe wanting to stay longer!

Such a fun tour – where to start! We loved this area, it is so lush and beautiful. The hiking was a good workout but not too hard. This area has exceptional wine, so you will definitely enjoy all of that. I think the hotels that Pure Advneutres uses on this trip are really of a good quality, and I don’t think we could have figured all of this out on our own, especially the routing! The trip had a lot of special inside info and tips, so that was a really helpful aspect. All four of us said we would do this trip again in a heartbeat!

Great hiking tour with everything organized nicely – just show up and get ready to hike, eat and drink some good Portuguese wine! We were very pleased with the self-guided format instead of guided. My wife could have more of a lie in most mornings and less rushing around!

Very relaxed hiking tour with go at your own pace style. Good services and support. We even found the hotel staff to be on point and helpful, which is rare. The app worked well for the duration. The Douro region is exceptional.
