Halsey (born September 29, 1994) is the stage name of American indie-pop singer-songwriter and musician Ashley Frangipane, hailing from Washington, New Jersey, U.S.

Born and raised in Washington, New Jersey, Frangipane also spent time in neighbouring New York where she soon developed ties. During her early years the musician learned to play the viola, violin, and the cello before at the age of 14, pickiing up the acoustic guitar. Frangipane subsequently enrolled in community college studying songwriting and began to build a list of musical connections. In order to pay for her classes the singer-songwriter would perform all over the East Coast using various monikers, ultimately landing on the anagram of her name, Halsey.

The musician’s big break came in 2014 when Frangipane uploaded the song “Ghost” to her SoundCloud page. The track soon became popular online and caught the attention of a number of interested labels. The singer subsequently signed with Astralwerks who issued her debut EP “Room 93” in October that year. Introducing the singer’s emotive vocal delivery and songwriting, reminiscent of British singer Ellie Goulding, the record catapulted Frangipane to online notoriety. Featuring the single “Ghost”, the EP also spawned four accompanying videos, garnering significant attention on music video platforms.

In support of the record the singer toured in support of The Kooks and embarked on her “American Youth Tour” alongside Young Rising Sons and OLIVVER. The remix EP “Room 93: The Remixes” was released in March 2015 featuring mixes by Arty, Lost Kings, and Sander Kleinenberg. Later in 2015 the singer made her South by Southwest festival debut, where according to social media, she was the most talked-about act of the festival.

Live reviews

I started listening to Halsey in the summer, as a lot of people that have the same music taste as me had been raving about her on twitter, tumblr and instagram. So i checked her music out on spotify and fell in love.

I then told my best friend about her and she too quickly became obsessed. When she released tickets for a London show we bought them straight away.

The effects were amazing, she looked amazing and her voice was incredible! Also, the two support acts (Flor and BØRNS) were really good.

I recommend getting standing tickets, as you will have a much better view (also the O2 Academy Brixton had the floor as a slope so you had a good view from wherever you were standing) and getting there when doors open as the queue moves fast and you'll be able to have a good spot and see the supporting acts.

I really loved her performance of New Americana, Ghost, Young God, Hurricane, Drive and Gasoline!!

The setlist was really well thought out and she was charming, beautiful and funny! One of the best shows I've been to!

There wasn't a massive variety of merch but, as someone who goes to concerts a lot, it was a really really good show. 100% worth the money!

The moment the bass kicked in and the lights went down, I could feel her energy in the air. All of her love, all of her peace was radiating throughout the ballroom and crashing like waves into each and every single persons chest. When she finally appeared in a red jumpsuit and a black top, my heart stopped. Everything in the world came to a pause and she was there, giving her life on stage. After several costume changes and adjustments and beautiful stage presence, Halsey began to address some issues that have come about in the US and in doing so, she reminded us all to be proud. Proud of our race, sexuality, gender and everything in between. And when she looked out into the crowd, scanning our faces, passing her love individually to every pair of eyes she met, I almost felt as though her eyes caught me, way up in the balcony beyond human sight, and I swear she smiled.

Not only is Halsey's stage presence intensely welcoming and energetic, but her voice is absolutely stunning. Even with all her movement and dancing she still manages to sound almost identical to her recordings. I have so much love and respect for her talent and I hope to see her again live very soon.

New Jersey pop singer Ashley Nicolette Frangipane better known by her stage persona of Halsey is the next in a long line of icy cool teen stars attempting to break out of the States. Although she is only 20 years old, there is something quite old headed and mature about Halsey. Perhaps it is due to the fact you can really understand the mixed inspirations of Slick Rick, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Alanis Morisette, The Cure and 2Pac when watching her live.

There is clear adoration for the indie scene that she grew up surrounded by whilst the hip hop bass lines are turned up to the max during the show. She has a great confidence too for somebody so young as she enthuses the crowd with ease and makes them jump along to tracks they have not even heard of. The debut album is set for release this year so therefore a number of tracks are showcased tonight and there is a strange electricity that seems to point towards this being one of the most exciting releases to come.

Halsey was fucking amazing. It was a very fun show and I really liked that it was general admission. I waited in line in the cold for about 4 hours and there were around 150 to 200 people in front of me. When I got onto the venue everyone was really nice and I somehow worked my way up to 3rd row. There was a lot of pushing but that's to be expected at a general admission show. Olivver the kid went on first and he played about 5 songs his music was really good and even though the crowd didn't know him, we had a good time. Next was Young Rising Sons, Adam was very involved in the crowd and was always holding ours hands and signing to us. He handed a girl his mic for about 30 seconds was constantly making eye contact with people. Finally Halsey came on. She played 12 songs and fucking killed it. She had a lot of attitude and went all around the stage. She wasn't as involved in the crowd as YRS was but her show was fucking amazing

Halsey is truly amazing live. Her energy on stage was incredibly high throughout the entirety of the show: she never seems to get tired! Her voice sounds identical to that of the studio versions of her songs, even when she is jumping around and engaging with the crowd (interacting with the front row), and EVEN when the end of the show came, she still hit the notes effortlessly. Furthermore, her outfit changes were executed smoothly and quickly, not giving the crowd much time to even register her temporary disappearances. The lights and sounds also added to her performance (although I would say that there was quite a lot of fast flashing lights, which is bad for my head!). Overall, it was truly amazing, and she had everyone else tirelessly dancing and singing along through the entire concert. I would definitely go to see her again!

The best concert I've ever been to in my entire life... granted I've only been to 2... but Halsey has been my idol ever since I discovered her, and it was a dream come true seeing her life. If I get enough money I may go to her last concert at Madison Square Garden seeing as I'm originally from New York, and it would be cool to be able to say "yeah I went to the first concert and the last concert of her Final Installment" It is my dream come true, and I hope I can meet her one day... if I didn't cry enough at the concert from her being so amazing I can't even imagine meeting her!! But I 10/10 recommend you see her in concert. I can't stop posting about it everywhere, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat got SPAMMED with all my videos and pictures that I took. I can't wait to see her again! :)

Attended the second night of Halsey's residency at Webster Hall on Thursday (9th May). I was fortunate enough to get a ticket during the second round. (She had reclaimed prior tix from scalpers.) Her fan base is incredibly passionate about her, and tis easy to see why.

The majority of the set list covered her latest album, "Hopeless Fountain Kingdom". "Bad at Love" was a definite crowd pleaser. "Now or Never", "Sorry", "Walls Could Talk" and "Strangers" were additional gems. Though being in General Admission was an insane crush, I would gladly see her again.

She definitely fed off the energy of the crowd, and we returned it in spades. She effortlessly danced across WH's small stage. After remarking how far she was from her audience at one point, she then jumped into the crowd.

Halsey, she was absolutely amazing live. She spoke to the whole crowd and it felt like she really connected to the crowd. Her songs were amazing live and her dancing was breathtaking. The lights were as it was searching for the right crowd member to shine it's multicoloured brightness to illuminate oneself. But the lights were certainly not 'overdone' in any means. Halsey is a great person to who will try to take time to meet with the fans. In my personal experience I waited a couple hours outside to even catch another glimpse of her. When she came out she spoke again to us that were left about her experience and what really could you ask more of ? All and all I would definitely go to another one of her concerts if the opportunity came up again. Would recommend for any fan of hers.

I find it hard to put into words how amazing I felt at Halsey's Houston show on October 25th. There were fans of so many different races, sexualities, and ages, and once Halsey started singing it's as if the whole crowd became one person and we all just connected so deeply with the music and the artist. Halsey is one of the few artists who will go out of their way to communicate with their fans. She didn't just go up there, sing, and leave. She talked to us about love, heartache, and being strong in the face of hate and adversity and that just made her performance ten times more emotional and amazing for me. Not to mention, the special effects, dancing, and opening acts were breathtaking. Halsey can put on quite a show and I would strongly recommend going to see her live.

The concert was amazing. The stage was lit sooo well that even from far you could see it. It’s a must go to concert because in between songs Halsey sometimes has some really deep conversations with the audience and parts of it are very inspiring. In her concert yesterday in Wolf Trap Vienna she said that she doesn’t like being at the top away from the audience. That’s why she had a really pretty staircase that could take her closer to us. At one point she came walking down the side way of the crowd and everyone went crazy. She’s says that we’re all relatable no matter who you are: guy, girl someone’s girlfriend of ex. We can all relate in someway!! I could write an essay on this but it’ll be too long:)

Halsey Announces 22-Date Love and Power Tour: 'I Could Not Be More Excited'

The singer released their Grammy-nominated album If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power in August

halsey tour london

Halsey is hitting the road!

The "I am not a woman, I'm a god" singer announced a new tour on Monday in support of their most recent album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power .

"it's been far too long and i could not be more excited to see you all," Halsey, 27, wrote on Twitter. "the love and power tour is coming this summer, tickets on sale this friday."

Halsey's latest set of shows will kick off in May in West Palm Beach, Florida, before wrapping in Irvine, California in July after 22 dates.

The musician announced their tour with a medieval-themed poster inspired by tapestries of the period. The poster indicated that all shows will be held at outdoor venues, including three festivals, and supporting acts include Beabadoobee, Pink Pantheress, The Marias, Abby Roberts and Wolf Alice.

If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power , which marked a decidedly grungy, pop-punk turn for the star, was released in August and is nominated for best alternative music album at the upcoming Grammy Awards .

Halsey stopped by Saturday Night Live in October to play a pair of tracks off the record, and has since been dedicated to raising their son, Ender Ridley, whom they welcomed in July 2021 with boyfriend Alev Aydin.

The singer opened up about how their life has changed since welcoming Ender in an October interview with Billboard . At the time, they said, "being a mother to my son makes being a musician seem pretty boring."

"Something really amazing happened when I did have my son, which is the absolute, glorious eradication and death of my ego," Halsey added. "Nothing matters when I go home to him. He thinks I'm perfect and great and everything."

Tickets for the Love and Power tour will go on sale here on Friday to the general public at 10 a.m. local time. Fans who previously bought tickets for the Manic tour will have access to a special presale starting Tuesday at 10 a.m. local time, and continuing through Thursday at 10 p.m.

Halsey announces biggest UK tour to date

The singer-songwriter comes to these shores in March 2020.

Award-winning singer-songwriter Halsey has announced details of a forthcoming UK arena tour.

The new run of dates kicks off in Glasgow on 7 March 2020, before heading to London, Dublin and Manchester.

Support at the shows comes from Manchester alt-pop makers Pale Waves.

The tour will be in support of Halsey’s brand new highly anticipated third studio album Manic,  due for release on 17 January 2020 through Capitol Records.

Last year the star released the debut single from the new record, Without Me.  The track, which interpolates Justin Timberlake’s hit  Cry Me A River peaked at No.3 on the Official UK Singles Chart.

The singer-songwriter followed the release of Without Me with the standalone single 11 Minutes featuring Yungblud and Travis Barker, and Nightmare .

Earlier this month Halsey dropped the forthcoming album’s second single Graveyard,  alongside a time-lapse video for the track showcasing her artistic talent. Check it out below:

Halsey - Graveyard (Time-lapse)

Halsey first came to widespread public attention in 2015 with her breakthrough debut album Badlands.

Featuring the singles Ghost, New Americana, Colors and Castle, the record was a huge commercial and critical success, quickly establishing the New Jersey-born musician as one of the most exciting artists in music.

After the release of her debut, her profile was further boosted by featuring on The Chainsmoker’s 2016 smash hit single Closer. The song topped the charts in the US for 12 consecutive weeks, and at the time of writing is currently the third most-streamed song of all time on Spotify.

Following the success of Closer, Halsey released her sophomore LP  Hopeless Fountain Kingdom  in 2017, spawning the singles Now Or Never, Bad At Love  and  Alone.

A frequent collaborator, Halsey has teamed up to release music with artists such as Justin Bieber, Khalid, Post Malone, Benny Blanco and BTS.

The last time Halsey performed in the UK was back in June 2019, for a one-off intimate show at Camden’s Electric Ballroom.

Here are the dates:

7 March 2020 – The SSE Hydro, Glasgow 8 March 2020 – The O2, London 10 March 2020 – 3Arena, Dublin 12 March 2020 – Manchester Arena

Halsey: “No amount of experience makes you invincible to trends”

The NME Innovation Award winner talks to us about one year of ‘If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power’, playing Reading & Leeds 2022, fighting for abortion rights, covering Kate Bush, and Bring Me The Horizon coaching them on screaming

“I’m so fucking grateful I get to tour this album here this year,” Halsey tells the audience midway through her powerhouse headline performance at Reading Festival . It’s been a year and a day since they dropped their innovative fourth album ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power’ and the twin, top-billed spots at Reading & Leeds 2022 mark the first time she’s been able to play these songs on British soil. After battling a gnarly bout of food poisoning at Leeds – they smashed it onstage, despite illness – their Sunday gig at Reading Festival proves a triumph – hailed by NME as a “a ballsy but poignant statement from a true rockstar”.

Just before the shows, Halsey is sat in a swanky London hotel suite discussing her preparations for the iconic festival with us. “The way this tour came together [means] that my performance style has evolved into a space that’s really true to the sentiment of what Reading and Leeds are as festivals,” they explain. Describing the sensory identity for this tour as “pure fun, unbridled rage”, it’s a fitting show for carrying on R+L’s hedonistic rock legacy.

Last year’s release of ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power’ saw Halsey reinvent themselves, teaming up with Nine Inch Nails ’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to embrace a grittier alt-rock sound. With an ambitious accompanying film of the same name, the project was just one of the many reasons Halsey was awarded the Innovation Award at the BandLab NME Awards 2022 in March (something she says today was “really affirming and validating”).

Speaking exclusively to NME , Halsey tells us about covering Kate Bush , working with Bring Me The Horizon , fighting for abortion rights, and looking back on one year of her rock rebirth.

Hey Halsey. It’s been a year since ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power’ came out – What are you doing to celebrate?

Halsey: “My gosh, well, it’s funny because the album is so inherently attached to my child, because I was pregnant [while writing] and it came out shortly after I’d given birth to my son.

“It’s really cool to look at how my life has changed since the fear I was experiencing before I was about to release that record. [Fear] because of the record, because of the change in my sound, because I was about to give birth – and that’s a scary thing to do also. And to look at where I am. I’m like: ‘OK, I put out an album that wasn’t a traditional pop record and nobody died, everything was fine, I didn’t fall off the face of the earth, everything didn’t catch on fire’. In fact, a lot of wonderful things happened and it was experienced by so many people in such an amazing way.”

So you’ve come a long way from ‘the fear’?

“Those things coming together and giving me that sense of peace is really special, so I want to try and give my fans a little bit of an inside look on how I’ve – I don’t want to use the word ‘recovered’, because I don’t think there are necessarily things to recover from – but I guess a sense of perspective now since releasing [the album].

“A lot of my songs are about things that are troubling or dark, or things I’m struggling with, so I think it’s important to follow up so that people who are listening know it does improve. It gets better, and sometimes it doesn’t and that’s OK too, do it at your own pace. A couple of songs we’ll be putting out, some demos, early iterations of the record and yeah, hopefully some exciting conversations. I haven’t been on social media in a while!”

You delved into this heavier rock palette for the last album. Would you do that again, or are there other genres you’d like to go into?

“I very much would like to, as I think it has energised me in a way with my live show. I feel like I’m embracing a part of my artistry that’s always been there, but I haven’t always been able to articulate. For a long time I associated rock with angst, and angst with youth. When I was making this record I was 26 and I was pregnant. I was mourning losing my youth and almost thinking to myself that’s almost passed me by, [like] I’ve missed the boat on getting to create a record like this. I was thinking, ‘Am I entitled to angst’?

“At first I was like, ‘The answer is no, you’re about to become someone’s mother – you can’t be angsty, you need to have everything under control’. Then I realised that with maturity, learning more about the world, and learning more about yourself, comes a tremendous amount of angst, and I can continue to grow into my 30s and 40s and still have rock music that is accessible to me.

“With that being said, I also get really impatient and antsy with genre, and I feel like everyone has made a terrible mistake by letting me make whatever music I want, because now I just can’t see an end to it, where I just want to try everything and do everything. I think with the place I’m at in my life now, if I did make another rock album soon, it’d probably be a bit more of a live, organic rock album. Something that’s a bit more acoustic-y, a little more analogue, dive into that sound, just go Stevie Nicks on them.”

You’ve worked with fellow Reading & Leeds headliners Bring Me The Horizon several times. Would you do it again?

“Oh yeah. Oh my gosh, I’d work with Bring Me again in a heartbeat. They’re such great guys. We spent a couple of days in the studio together and we made a couple of songs, and you just wouldn’t believe the range of music we were making. We were in the studio and Jordan [Fish, keys] was coaching me through doing these Justin Timberlake harmonies on a record, and I was like, ‘Dude what?’ And he was like ‘I love music like this’.

“They were having a lot of fun with me I think, as we were getting to write stuff together that Oli [Sykes, frontman] wouldn’t necessarily sing. In most situations I’d walk into a room and say to a producer, ‘Hey I want to make a very futuristic, pop nu-metal song’. They’d look at me and be like, ‘You have to go home’. Whereas the Bring Me guys were like, ‘Let’s do it! Let’s go!’

“They coached me through my first time screaming on a record which was really fun. You can’t ask for a better person to coach you through that. Now I do it in the show, live every night, which is awesome.”

Speaking about your live show – you’ve been covering Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill ’ recently. Why did you decide that was a song to bring into your set?

“I’ve obviously been so influenced by Kate Bush, I feel like anyone who’s spent more than 10 minutes with my music would know that. It’s written all over it, that there’s a genesis there from the music that she was making to the music I make today. I really admire her fearlessness and her weirdness.

“When the song started having a bit of a resurgence [due to its inclusion in Stranger Things ], I was excited as it was a song I’d wanted to cover. Now I had a really good reason to, as my audience would react to it and respond to it and know it. I’ve performed it so many times now. I was having dinner with my manager the other night and the DJ dropped ‘Running Up That Hill’, and my body responded viscerally as if they’d played one of my songs. I feel so attached to it now, that it started playing [Halsey sings the opening riff] and I was like, ‘Oh shit they’re playing Halsey, oh wait no they’re not, that’s Kate Bush!’ It’s become a part of me now.”

You’ve also recently released a new track, ‘So Good’. What can you tell us about writing that?

“That was a really interesting time for me because I’d just come off the road of making an album with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. That process had kind of condemned things about myself as an artist; sort of exiled parts of being a pop musician and committed myself to a process that was very fearless and avant-garde. When I first sat with ‘So Good’, I was like, ‘Wow, I really want to put this out, this is a really good song’.

“I had that moment when I was like, ‘Who am I going to be letting down by making another pop song? Does this make me a fraud? Am I evolving too quickly, is this a step backwards for me?’

“What really did it for me was listening to it as a demo, just vocals and piano. That’s when I was like, ‘This is a song that is just story-telling from top to bottom’. At the end of the day, when you strip away all the production and the fancy guest producers and the visuals and all that stuff, my job is to be a storyteller. I did that job with ‘So Good’, so I was like ‘I gotta put it out’.”

And obviously there was a bit of a push to get it out there, after you said your label were withholding it until you got a “fake viral moment on TikTok ”

“That was a really interesting situation to me, because it showed me that no amount of experience or time or longevity in this industry makes you invincible to trends. All of us are at times susceptible to how fast culture is changing, and it was a reminder that I can wake up any day and people might be like: ‘Halsey’s not it anymore’. And then I have to make a choice: am I going to change to be heard and to have my art experienced, or do I accept the culture has changed and just continue to be me and to continue to do what I do even if there’s not a receptacle for it in the zeitgeist anymore?

“I don’t know the answer to that, honestly. It could be one, it could be the other, it could be an intersection between both. But yeah, it was definitely a wake-up call.”

You’ve been very vocal on abortion rights. It’s pretty bleak out there, but does the response from your fans to things like this make you maybe a bit more hopeful for the future?

“Oh, 100 per cent – and not even the response, as it goes beyond blind rage and my fans do a really good job at keeping themselves educated. One of the things we did at the shows was at every city we’d say the names of the legislators out loud. Saying the names of the politicians. This isn’t an imaginary bad guy, these are people who live in your cities and your counties and states, so remember their names so if they come up for re-election when you’re old enough to vote, or you’re accessible to vote. Remember the name and be like, ‘No, screw that dude – I remember what he did a few years ago’.

“Especially in the US, politicians have an incredible way of shapeshifting through their beliefs; when someone can run on a platform they were staunchly against years ago. It’s more for me trying to seer those names into their minds. I really didn’t have to do much as they’re so educated and so autonomous, and it’s really, really wonderful to see.

“It’s also great to see globally. My fans all over the world have a really strong network where they’re supporting people in other countries when similar things happen overseas, so I’m just really proud of them. I think they’re awesome, I hope every kid grows up to be like one of my fans.”

Halsey Announces Love And Power Tour For Summer 2022

The artist is bringing along Beabadoobee, PinkPantheress, and more.

Halsey has announced a major run of live shows in support of her critically acclaimed and Grammy-nominated fourth studio album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power .

Called the Love And Power Tour , the 21-date stretch of shows will be Halsey’s first proper tour since the singer was forced to cancel their Manic World Tour in 2020. It will also be the first time they’ll be performing the career-defining album live in full. The tour will bring Halsey throughout the U.S. starting in West Palm Beach, FL where the tour kicks off in May, before wrapping up on the west coast in Irvine, CA in July. In between, Halsey will also make appearances at multiple music festivals, including Alabama’s Hangout Music Festival, Milwaukee’s Summerfest, and New York City’s Governor’s Ball.

Halsey will also be bringing along a stellar slate of supporting acts, including British rocker Beabadoobee, TikTok sensation PinkPantheress, acclaimed U.K. synth-pop group Wolf Alice, cult L.A. band The Marías, and more.

Halsey released her fourth studio concept album If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power to massive success in August 2021. Produced by Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the record is the first and only album Reznor and Ross have ever jointly produced for another artist. The 16-track epic marked an extreme shift in sound for Halsey as they dove into industrial rock and pop, and covered themes ranging from gender identity, pregnancy, societal expectations , and more.

Halsey has announced a new North American tour, dubbed Love And Power , to take place this summer in support of If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power .

The New Jersey-born musician released their fourth album last August and will now take it on tour for the first time from May.

The gigs will kick off in West Palm Beach, FL on May 17 and continue on until July 9, when the tour concludes at FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA. All shows will be held at outdoor venues and will follow Live Nation’s COVID-19 protocol, which requires all attendees to show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID test.

Halsey will be supported by British grunge star Beabadoobee and London alt-pop newcomer PinkPantheress between May 17 to June 8 (except May 21). LA indie-pop band The Marias and TikTok make-up artist-turned-pop star Abby Roberts will join them from June 16 to July 9, excluding June 21 where Wolf Alice will open.

“it’s been far too long and i could not be more excited to see you all,” Halsey wrote on Twitter . “the love and power tour is coming this summer.” Tickets will go on general sale on Friday (February 4) and will be available to purchase here .

Some of the tour dates include festival headline appearances, including at Hangout Fest in Alabama and Governors Ball in New York .

In December, Halsey released an extended edition of If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power , featuring two versions of their 2020 single “Nightmare,” as well as the track “People Disappear Here.” Both songs had previously been released on special US retailer releases of the record last year.

Weeks before that release, the pop icon shared a new video for “Honey,” which appeared on the Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross-produced album. The clip saw the star getting covered in honey while performing the track.

On March 2, Halsey will be honored at the BandLab NME Awards 2022 , where she will receive the Innovation Award. “I wasn’t expecting [this], I was very surprised,” she told NME when the news was announced last year. “But it’s really, really awesome – I think you start to get really sad and nervous about how your music connects when you’re not around to bring it to life, and to know that it’s still resonating is really, really cool.”
