Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones had what was almost certainly the most high-profile tour of the year. On Pollstar ‘s just-released ranking of 2021’s top tours, though, the Stones come in only at No. 8. There’s a good reason for that, of course — the list is ranked by tickets sold, not grosses.

Harry Styles was No. 1, with 669,051 attendees at his arena shows, adding up to an $86.7 million gross for the year. The Stones played a far more modest amount of stadium shows, with 516,624 paying customers, but higher ticket prices accounted for a robust $115.5 million take, which made the group the only artist to bring in a nine-figure gross for 2021.

These are among the stats included in Pollstar’s 2021 year-end touring report, dubbed “The Great Return,” the hub for which can be found here .

As touring started up again in what may or may not be remembered as the beginnings of a post-pandemic era, Styles was one of just two artists to play to more than 600,000 customers, the other being the No. 2 “Hella Mega Tour,” featuring Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer, which brought in 659,000 patrons and a $67.3 million gross. Styles’ year-topping tour sold 669,000 tickets.

The remainder of the top 10 tour list consisted of Dead & Company at No. 3 with 588,600 tickets (and a $50.2 million take); Dave Matthews Band at No. 4 with 583,000 customers ($46 million); Phish in fifth with 573,000 ($45 million), the Jonas Brothers taking sixth with 529,000 ($42 million); Luke Bryan at No. 7 with 523,000 ducats; Chris Stapleton in ninth with 516,000 sold ($35 million); and Alanis Morissette, who was celebrating the anniversary of “Jagged Little Pill,” coming in at No. 10 with 499,000 ($29 million).

Popular on Variety

In the Nos. 11-20 spots: Maroon 5, Pitbull, Luke Combs, Los Bukis, Guns N’ Roses Grup Firme, Zac Brown Band, Garth Brooks, Enrique Iglesias/Ricky Martin and Korn.

The list of the top 100 tours was just one of many Pollstar put together for the annual occasion. The trade publication for the concert biz also ranked the top promoters, arenas, theaters, clubs, stadiums and amphitheaters.

The report additionally includes rankings like a look at the year’s top 300 concert grosses, which is led by (no surprise) the Rolling Stones, with a two-night stand at L.A.’s SoFi Stadium that sold through all 81,676 available tickets, at a top face value of $499.50. The gross for that two-gig engagement alone as $18.9 million. A single date by the Stones at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium was the second-biggest booking of the year, with a $14.8 million gross off of 42,000 tickets sold.

SoFi Stadium did well in its opening year of 2021. Besides hosting the Stones’ chart-topping gigs, it was also the site of the No. 3 engagement, as two shows by Los Bukis in September added up to $13.8 million.

In fact, between them, the Stones and Los Bukis took 11 of the top 12 slots on the list of top grosses. Only a three-nighter by the Eagles at L.A.’s Forum, at No. 9, was able to break into those ranks.

The top promoters were Live Nation, with 13 million tickets sold and $1.1 billion in grosses, followed by AEG Presents, with nearly 3 million tickets and $281 million brought in. Both those companies have divisions that are ranked separately, like AEG’s Concerts West, which ranked No. 10 and sold 569,000 tickets, and its Messina Touring Group at No. 12 with 412,000 tickets.

Said the Pollstar study, “Outdoor venues… saw a bump this year – understandable since social distancing and general concern about being indoors in close contact with others during the time of COVID were factors. The percentage of amphitheater performances in 2021 was 10% of the overall in North America, considerably higher than 2019’s 4%. Likewise, stadium shows, most of which are outdoors, were about 8% of the total this year in comparison to only 1% two years ago prior to the pandemic.”

The top arenas: Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena (336,000 tickets, $26 million), New York’s Madison Square Garden (298,000 tickets, $38 million) and L.A.’s Forum (278,000, $33.7 million). Both the New York and L.A. facilities had fewer tickets sold but higher grosses than their Nashville counterpart.

The top stadiums, by tickets sold: San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, Hershey’s Hersheypark Stadium, Chicago’s Wrigley Field, Boston’s Fenway Park and the newcomer of the group, SoFi Stadium.

The top theaters: Nashville’s Ryman, Atlanta’s Fox, Hollywood, Florida’s Hard Rock Live, Las Vegas’ Park Theatre and New York’s Beacon.

The top amphitheaters: Red Rocks in Colorado, Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, IN, DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI, Cynthia Woods MItchell Pavilion in the Woodlands, TX and Xfinty Cener in Mansfield, AZ.

“This year started slowly as the live entertainment industry knocked the rust off and ‘got the band back together,'” said Ray Waddell, president of Oak View Group’s Media & Conferences Division, which oversees Pollstar, in a statement. “But in the final analysis, our superstars performed like superstars at the box office and fans embraced the return of live music, with joy and unbridled passion. The industry still has many challenges, including establishing consistency in safety and sanitization protocols at venues and events around the world, solving the pricing puzzle, and big picture inclusivity and sustainability objectives. But we’re thrilled to note that so many artists returned to the stage this year and fans couldn’t get enough of the live thing. Barring unforeseen challenges, 2022 could see live return to its record-setting ways of the past decade.”

Rolling Stones, Green Day, Guns N’ Roses among 2021’s highest grossing tours

After a disastrous 2020, the worldwide live music circuit bounced back this year, with lucrative returns for some of rock’s most storied names

Stones 2021

As they approach their 60th anniversary, The Rolling Stones remain one of the biggest rock bands in the world: in fact, new statistics made available by US live music/ticketing bible Pollstar reveal that the Stones’ on-going No Filter tour was the highest grossing tour of 2021. selling 516,624 tickets across a 12-date, 11-city run, grossing $115.5 million.

Pollstar ’s stats for the Stones’ live business across the decades make for astonishing reading. It’s suggested that the band’s1994-1995 Voodoo Lounge tour grossed $320 million and sold 6.4 million tickets, while their 2005-2007 Bigger Bang Tour grossed $558 million from sales of 4.7 million tickets. Pollstar’s figure estimate that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards’ band accumulated $870 million in the aughts, $929 million in the teens and $800 million in the '90s, so a tidy $2.6 billion over those decades.

Back to 2021, and the Green Day / Fall Out Boy /Weezer Hella Mega Tour banked  $67.3 million, selling 659,062 tickets over a 20-date trek, with an average ticket costing $102.09. Guns N' Roses placed at number seven on the list, pulling $47.3 million for the year, selling 351,339 tickets over 23 shows in 21 cities: the average ticket cost here was more expensive, at $134.75.

Other rock bands who enjoyed a successful 2021 on the road include Kiss (number 30 on the list, with a $16.9 million gross),  Slipknot (number 42, $12.3 million) and Korn (48, $10.3 million).

The Rolling Stones Sympathy For The Devil at London Stadium

Last month saw frontman Mick Jagger suggested the Stones could tour again next year if "everyone" is feeling up for it.

The band's rescheduled No Filter dates marked their first run without late drummer Charlie Watts , who sadly passed away on 24 August 2021.

The band also revealed they weren't allowed to visit the original drummer during his final days in hospital, with Ronnie Wood telling the LA Times: “We watched horse racing on TV and just shot the breeze. I could tell he was pretty tired and fed up with the whole deal.

"He said, ‘I was really hoping to be out of here by now,’ then after that there was a complication or two and I wasn’t allowed back. No one was"

The pandemic brought by Covid-19 surely changed a lot of normality in people’s lifestyle. — One of these is the absence of live shows such as gigs and concerts which was really saddening for the music industry. But now, things are getting back to normal and the shows that we’ve missed going to are now slowly returning to life.

That’s why for this year, nothing stopped Pollstar from listing down the top grossing tours of 2021. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legends Rolling Stones tops the list with their No Filter USA 2021 tour. The band postponed their tour on 2020 dates and rescheduled it which ran on September to November. It was the top grossing sales on tours for this year with over $115.5 million selling 516,624 tickets.

While the “Hella Mega” tour of Green Day, Fall Out Boy, and Weezer comes in third place following Harry Styles. The tour supposedly ran in 2020 but they’ve cancelled the shows in a lot of countries and rescheduled it for this year and 2022 making $67.3 million sales with 659,062 tickets sold.

Making the cut for the top 10 list is Guns N’ Roses taking the seventh place. The band made $47.3 million sales with 351,339 tickets sold for their upcoming summer tour on 2022 in parts of North and South America and in Europe and will continue at the end of the year in Australia and New Zealand. https://bellevuehealthcare.com/

GUNS N' ROSES, KISS, SLIPKNOT, KORN, Others Make POLLSTAR's List Of Highest-Grossing Worldwide Tours Of 2021

THE ROLLING STONES had the highest-grossing tour in the world this year, according to Pollstar , the trade publication dedicated to covering the worldwide concert industry. The "No Filter" trek generated a total of $115.5 million from just 12 concerts. Other artists whose tours landed in the top 100 include GUNS N' ROSES , KISS , SLIPKNOT and MEGADETH / LAMB OF GOD .

The touring industry was one of the first sectors hit by the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020, and it may be one of the last to recover. One problem has been the inability to get foreign artists into the United States because of a long backlog of visa applications at American embassies and consulates.

Returning to the road after the touring industry shut down due to COVID has proven to be particularly gratifying for someone like GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash , who is notorious for spending most of his time playing live shows.

" GUNS just did a U.S. tour, which was a lot of fun," he told Germany's Radio Bob! in October. "It was great because you had all these crowds that were super hungry for live gigs. And so it was a very energetic tour. At the same time, [we] also had a lot of intense restrictions. We didn't have any kind of aftershow guests — no guests whatsoever — and we never left the hotel pretty much the entire time. And everybody just had to really keep it together so that we didn't have somebody get sick and have to postpone the tour and all that kind of stuff. But we made it through unscathed. So it was good."

These are some of the rock/metal artists who have made Pollstar 's "2021 Year-End Top 100 Worldwide Tours" list:

01. THE ROLLING STONES ($115.5 million) 03. GREEN DAY , WEEZER , FALL OUT BOY ($67.3 million) 07. GUNS N' ROSES ($47.3 million) 30. KISS ($16.9 million) 42. SLIPKNOT 's "Knotfest Roadshow" ($12.3 million) 48. KORN ($10.3 million) 53. ZZ TOP ($9.4 million) 61. MEGADETH , LAMB OF GOD ($7.9 million) 63. SHINEDOWN ($7.5 million) 64. THE BLACK CROWES ($7.4 million) 69. PRIMUS ($7.0 million) 76. FOREIGNER ($6 million) 85. FOO FIGHTERS ($4.5 million)

The highest-grossing concert tours of all time

D ue to streaming services and the preferences for singles, album sales are down overall. But one thing remains clear: fans are still willing to pay to see their favorite artists in person. Touring has also become even more important to musicians in the streaming era, as many musicians earn more from ticket sales than from record sales. On top of that, ticket prices have gone up, which means that many of the highest-grossing tours of all time have taken place in the past decade or two.

From the Top, Touring Looks Better Than Ever

Artists have been back on the road for a full year, and the top 10 highest-grossing tours are thriving. Will that success spread?

By Dave Brooks

Dave Brooks

This story is part of Billboard ‘s The Year in Touring package — read more stories about the top acts, tours and venues of 2022 here .

Was 2022 the worst “best year ever?” By some measures, the concert business had its most successful year. From Nov. 1, 2021, to Oct. 31, 2022, the top 10 tours grossed a combined $2.2 billion in ticket sales, according to Billboard Boxscore, 36% more than they did in 2019, the previous full year of touring, and more than four times the $519 million they took in during the pandemic-limited 2021.

Bad Bunny Makes History as Top Touring Act for 2022: The Year in Charts

Some of this growth follows an existing trend. Since 2013, the live business has grown steadily between 5% and 10% a year, thanks to international expansion and an increasing number of megatours. In 2013, eight acts took in over $100 million at the box office — Bon Jovi , P!nk , Bruce Springsteen , Beyoncé , Rihanna , Taylor Swift , The Rolling Stones and the Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson show.

Trending on Billboard

The bad news, however, is twofold: More work for fewer employees in the wake of pandemic layoffs, plus rising costs for staffing, production and travel, threaten to erode profits. “We are working harder than ever just to try and make sure we don’t lose any ground,” says Jim Cressman, founder and owner of Canadian independent promoter Invictus Entertainment.

Cressman and Live Nation executives say that fans also seem to be changing their concertgoing habits by waiting longer to buy tickets. About 30% of tickets for this year’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago were purchased five days or fewer before the event, according to Live Nation. It’s a concerning trend for promoters and tour organizers who have become accustomed to scaling event costs up and down based on projections from early sales. Fans are also getting wise to the fact that ticket prices, especially on the secondary market, tend to drop over time.

The names of the top 10 tours won’t surprise anyone who follows the industry. No. 1 is Bad Bunny , who did two tours during this time frame: El Último Tour del Mundo, which ran from February to April and grossed $116 million, and World’s Hottest Tour, which brought in $246 million from August to the end of the Billboard Boxscore touring year; it will run until Dec. 10. The tour dates within this time frame, as well as isolated hometown shows in Puerto Rico, grossed a combined $373.5 million, the third-highest year-end total in Boxscore history after Ed Sheeran ’s $429.5 million in 2018 and The Rolling Stones’ $425 million in 2006.

This is the first year that each tour in the top 10 grossed over $100 million and the top five each took in more than $200 million. Some of that is due to higher ticket prices: Bad Bunny tickets cost an average of $201, while tickets to Sheeran’s No. 1 2019 ÷ (Divide) shows cost an average of $86; the average ticket price of a top 10 tour was $130.76, up from $114.29 in 2019. Some of that growth comes from inflation, of course, while some is from a shift to higher ticket prices in order to capture revenue that once went to the secondary market. “The spending levels are really the same,” says Live Nation Global Touring chairman Arthur Fogel. “It’s just that artists are capturing more of it than ever before.”

Farther down the Top Tours chart, the growth also stays consistent. The top 40 tours grossed a total of $4.6 billion, up from a total of $3.5 billion in 2019, a difference of 32%

The New Scorecard

This year, Billboard Boxscore created a new chart to rank tours by number of tickets sold, not just revenue, although that information had already been included. And although promoters were concerned earlier in 2022 that touring market oversaturation would mean concerts drew fewer fans, the chart actually shows the opposite — major concerts attracted larger audiences without cannibalizing other shows. In 2022, a combined 17.1 million people saw the top 10 attended tours, up 21% from a combined 2019 attendance of 14.1 million. This year also marked the first time that 19 of the top 20 attended tours drew over 900,000 fans.

The top 10 tours also represent one of the youngest lists in recent years, with an average headliner age of 49.3, as opposed to 51.2 in 2019 and 54.6 in 2021. The oldest act was The Rolling Stones — Mick Jagger and Keith Richards will both be 79 by the end of the year, and Ron Wood is 75. The youngest acts were Harry Styles and Bad Bunny, both of whom turned 28 this year.

As in years past, Live Nation dominated the business, exclusively promoting half of the top 20 — which grossed a combined $1.5 billion — as well as Bad Bunny’s stadium shows, in collaboration with Cárdenas Marketing Network, and some shows for My Chemical Romance and Paul McCartney . AEG Presents follows with a handful of global tours, including Elton John , that combined accounted for $843 million. CMN powered Bad Bunny at No. 1 and Daddy Yankee at No. 13, while Mercury Concerts led the Latin American dates for Guns N’ Roses . Sheeran, at No. 3, was promoted by a mix of buyers throughout Europe.

On the agency front, the leader is Creative Artists Agency, with eight acts in the top 20: Styles, Red Hot Chili Peppers , The Weeknd , Lady Gaga , the Eagles , Dua Lipa (WME reps her in Europe), Justin Bieber and My Chemical Romance. Wasserman Music had four clients in the top 20 — Sheeran, Coldplay , Kenny Chesney and Billie Eilish — while UTA had two: Bad Bunny and Guns N’ Roses.

Three of the top tours — John, McCartney and The Rolling Stones — have global touring deals with AEG but don’t have a traditional booking agency deal. WME had only one artist in the top 20 with Daddy Yankee. So did the Neal Agency, started in February by Austin Neal, son of longtime WME agent Kevin Neal. Austin formed the agency to represent Morgan Wallen , who took a hiatus from touring after his use of a racial slur was caught on video in 2021. Wallen grossed $128 million in 2022 from 66 shows.

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2024 RBC Heritage

T here’s something different about the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C., primarily because there’s something different about the golf course compared to other venues that host PGA Tour events. It’s easily distinguishable as a Pete Dye design, with the railroad ties and the visual deception that comes into play off the tee and with shots into the green. The course is just 7,099 yards in length, with among the smallest greens on tour. You don’t have to be a bomber to win, and frankly this is a venue where ball-strikers typically thrive.

Consider this list of past winners in the last 25 years:

Stewart Cink, 2000, 2004, 2021

Justin Leonard, 2002

Boo Weekley, 2007, 2008

Brian Gay, 2009

Jim Furyk, 2010, 2015

Matt Kuchar, 2014

Webb Simpson, 2020

Jordan Spieth, 2022

Matt Fitzpatrick, 2023

Mind you, it didn't matter how the course was set up or who that might have favored—the way Scottie Scheffler has been playing, everyone else is playing each week for second place.

It happened again on Monday morning, Sunday rains delaying the inevitable. Scheffler had a five-shot lead with four holes to play, letting the cushion allow him to bogey the final hole at Harbour Town and still win by three shots with a final-round 68.

Scheffler did it again against another steller field, with the RBC Heritage being among the tour’s signature tournaments—offering a $20 million overall prize money payout with $3.6 million going to the winner—the field includes the top-ranked players on tour. Eight of the top 10 in the OWGR were competing, and 43 of the top 50 overall are in the field. (It’s not just the purse that’s attractive but the fact there’s no cut in the event, guaranteeing a solid payday so long as you play all 72 holes.)

Below is the prize money payout for each golfer at this week’s tournament. Come back shortly after the conclusion of the event and we’ll update this list with individual names and paydays.
