The Most Important Dates In Star Trek History

Mr. Spock looking skeptical

As sci-fi fans know, Star Trek is one of the longest-running media franchises in modern times. Since the original series premiered in September 1966, some iteration of the voyages of the starship Enterprise (or a related spin-off) has been continuously available on TV, in theaters, on bookshelves, through video games, and via streaming. Not all of them have been successful, of course ( Star Trek V: The Final Frontier , anyone?), but there's rarely been a time in almost six decades when Star Trek fans didn't have a version of their favorite sci-fi saga to watch, read, or play.

What has made Star Trek last so long? It's been a combination of indelible characters, remarkable sci-fi concepts and stories, and the franchise's uncanny ability to comment on the times no matter what decade it's in. From Gene Roddenberry's original vision of a hopeful, inclusive future to the darker, more complicated edge of shows like Star Trek: Picard , the franchise has continually held up a mirror to humanity and showed us at our best and our worst.

With over 50 years of production behind it, Star Trek certainly has its share of important milestones in its development and ongoing evolution. While the future of Trek itself is unwritten — the "undiscovered country," as a Klingon leader once called it — here are, for now, the most important dates in this fascinating franchise's history.

Gene Roddenberry puts his 'Wagon Train to the stars' on the road (March 11, 1964)

Star Trek officially came to life on March 11, 1964, when former pilot and police officer turned television writer Gene Roddenberry penned a 16-page outline for a science fiction TV series he dubbed " Wagon Train to the stars." The show was also loosely inspired by Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels , with Roddenberry planning to use the sci-fi framework to tell morality tales about modern society.

In his original conception, the U.S.S. Yorktown was the vessel at the heart of the show, commanded by Captain Robert April. Among the crew were a female executive officer only known as Number One, a doctor named Phillip Boyce, and a first lieutenant of indeterminate extraterrestrial origin called Mr. Spock. Nestled within those 16 pages were also some 25 story ideas, a number of which eventually became the basis of Star Trek episodes.

While many things changed along the way — including the name of the ship from Yorktown to  Enterprise — the essential idea remained the same. Roddenberry shopped his premise to several TV networks and production companies, with all but one passing — Desilu Studios, owned by Lucille Ball . Desilu in turn sold the pitch to NBC, which commissioned a pilot called "The Cage." Star Trek was on the launchpad ... until NBC rejected the pilot.

The Original Series sets course for strange new worlds (Sept. 8, 1966)

NBC liked some of what it saw in the first Star Trek pilot, "The Cage," but the story was deemed " too cerebral ," and network execs were also wary of the demonic-looking Mr. Spock , played by a relatively unknown actor named Leonard Nimoy.

NBC requested an unprecedented second pilot, and Roddenberry delivered a more action-oriented tale called "Where No Man Has Gone Before." While Spock was retained, nearly every other role was recast — including the ship's captain, now named James Tiberius Kirk and played by young Canadian thespian Willian Shatner. The second time was the charm, and NBC picked up the series .

On September 8, 1966, Star Trek premiered on NBC with an episode called  "The Man Trap." The fifth entry filmed in regular production, it had the Enterprise encounter the last member of a shapeshifting alien species that needed salt to survive. It introduced several characters who would become part of Star Trek history, including Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Communications Officer Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), physicist (later a helmsman) Hikaru Sulu (George Takei), and Yeoman Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney). The Enterprise 's stated five-year mission was on its way.

The original mission ends two years early (June 3, 1969)

It's been debated for years whether Star Trek always fared low in TV's Nielsen ratings. While the show was never an unconditional hit, it may have actually done better with audiences than has long been assumed. Nevertheless, NBC was looking to cancel the show after its second season, not just because of ratings but due to constant creative and budgetary battles with Gene Roddenberry.

A massive letter-writing campaign  led to Star Trek getting renewed for a third season, with Roddenberry — who'd stepped back from the show during the previous year — promising to return as full-time producer in exchange for a decent time slot. But when NBC stuck the show in the "death slot,"  10 PM on Friday nights , Roddenberry walked away and appointed Fred Freiberger as the new producer.

With Freiberger at the helm , the third season — which suffered from even steeper budget cuts — is universally considered Star Trek 's worst. While several episodes did stand out, nothing matched the quality of classics from the first two seasons like "The City on the Edge of Forever," "Balance of Terror," or "Mirror, Mirror." Viewers began to desert the show, too, and on June 3, 1969, the last episode produced, "Turnabout Intruder," aired on NBC. The five-year mission had been cut short.

Star Trek lives! (January 21-23, 1972)

Following its cancellation by NBC, Star Trek immediately went into syndication to local TV outlets in markets around the country, with its 79 episodes often rerunning five days a week in late afternoon or early evening time slots. As with so much about Trek , the results were unprecedented . Viewed by a new generation of fans who had missed the show in its original run, Star Trek became even more popular after its cancellation than it had ever been during its network heyday.

As sales of Star Trek merchandise (including books, comics, model kits, and toys) began to rocket upwards and the show's dedicated fan base — known at first as "Trekkies" and later as "Trekkers" — began to grow, the first official Star Trek convention was held in New York City from January 21-23, 1972 . While there had been unofficial Trek gatherings before, this one was solely devoted to Trek and featured guest appearances by Gene Roddenberry, original series story editor D.C. Fontana, and other production personnel.

A few hundred fans were expected to attend, but by the end of the weekend, the Lakeland Ledger said the estimated head count was 3,500 . The second annual convention, held the following year, drew some 7,000 Trekkers. Star Trek was very much alive in the hearts and minds of its fans, but the question was, could it live again on the screen?

Star Trek: The Motion Picture takes the Enterprise out of dry dock (Dec. 7, 1979)

By the mid-1970s, a Star Trek revival seemed inevitable, although whether the Enterprise would fly again on the small screen or in movie theaters wasn't so clear. An animated children's series based on the show — with voices by many of the original actors — lasted for just 22 episodes in 1973 and 1974. Meanwhile, plans to launch a Paramount television network with a show called Star Trek: Phase II were set in motion in 1977. Even though the series got well into pre-production — with Gene Roddenberry producing and all the original cast except Leonard Nimoy reprising their roles — Paramount corporate parent Gulf & Western pulled the plug in 1978.

Star Trek wasn't dead, however. Paramount officially announced Star Trek: The Motion Picture , directed by Robert Wise ( West Side Story ) and based on a revamped version of the Phase II pilot script. Nimoy agreed to return, with the story centering on the Enterprise 's encounter with a massive alien intelligence headed towards Earth. Overbudget,  barely completed in time for its premiere, and hampered by dodgy visuals and a flabby story, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was nonetheless  a box office hit  when it hit theaters in December 7, 1979, even if its price tag made it less than profitable. Nevertheless, there was an audience out there that wanted more adventures in "the final frontier."

Spock's sacrifice stuns the world (June 4, 1982)

While Star Trek: The Motion Picture was wildly expensive (and thus less profitable), it did prove there was an audience out there who would watch the Enterprise on the big screen. So Paramount Pictures ordered a sequel. Television producer Harve Bennett was hired to bring the movie in on time and on (a much lower) budget, while Nicholas Meyer was recruited to direct and write a new draft of the script. There was one obstacle, however. Leonard Nimoy refused to return ... unless Mr. Spock was killed off.

The result was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , in which Kirk and the Enterprise met up once again with Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban), the popular villain from the show's first season episode "Space Seed." And the movie did end with Spock sacrificing himself to save the ship — a stunning, poignant finale that left audiences reeling . But Trek II was a tremendous hit , with fans and critics alike proclaiming that the movie did a much better job of capturing the flavor of the series.

Of course, Spock eventually came back, and there have been (to date) 11 more Trek movies, including four more with the original cast, four with The Next Generation crew, and three with the Kelvin Timeline ensemble. But thanks to a great story and Spock's now-legendary death, The Wrath of Khan remains the gold standard of Trek on the big screen .

The Next Generation launches a new mission (Sept. 28, 1987)

By 1986, it was finally decided by Paramount that Star Trek would return to broadcast television . But acknowledging that the original cast members were both aging and requiring higher salaries, the new show would feature a fresh crew of mostly unknown actors .

Announced in October 1986 and premiering a year later on September 28, 1987, Star Trek: The Next Generation was launched as a syndicated show — sold independently to local stations instead of through a TV network — and moved the story 80 years into the future, with a sleek new Enterprise commanded by an imposing Frenchman named Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Gene Roddenberry once again was at the helm (for the first year) and kept to the basic Trek template .

Although the show didn't really find its groove until its third season, The Next Generation was a hit out of the box , with The New York Times noting that its ratings were often comparable to shows on major networks. In addition to Picard, it introduced new favorites like the android Data (Brent Spiner) and the Klingon officer Worf (Michael Dorn), plus formidable enemies like Q (John de Lancie) and the terrifying Borg collective. Running for seven seasons — over twice that of the original series — The Next Generation began a  new era for the franchise .

The Great Bird of the Galaxy soars into history (Oct. 24, 1991)

Gene Roddenberry passed away on October 24, 1991 at the age of 70. Nicknamed "the Great Bird of the Galaxy" by original Star Trek associate producer Robert Justman (after a throwaway line in the episode "The Man Trap"), Roddenberry was inextricably connected with the franchise he created for the rest of his life. In addition to creating and producing the original show, he produced or consulted on all the feature films until his death, and he created Star Trek: The Next Generation , although his failing health forced him to step away after its first season.

While Roddenberry's  talents and overall influence on Star Trek have been re-evaluated over the years — and his  personal foibles, such as alleged misogyny, brought to light  – there's no questioning the immensity of his contribution to pop culture and science fiction. Star Trek was the first truly intelligent sci-fi show with regular characters. The way it addressed issues of the day through genre window dressing was groundbreaking for its time. The mythos that Roddenberry conceived — along with his refreshingly optimistic and forward-thinking view of humanity — has endured for nearly six decades and will assuredly stand for many more.

Deep Space Nine takes Trek down a different path (Jan. 3, 1993)

Several years after The Next Generation premiered, Paramount wanted to develop a new series set in the Star Trek universe. With Gene Roddenberry passing away in 1991, this would be the first Trek show where he'd have no involvement. TNG producers Rick Berman and Michael Piller were charged with creating the new series, which ended up being called  Deep Space Nine .

Premiering on January 3, 1993, DS9 was in its own way just as groundbreaking as the original Star Trek . It was the first Trek series to feature a Black commander (Benjamin Sisko, played by Avery Brooks), it was set on a space station instead of a starship, and it was darker in tone than any previous Trek iteration. It featured interpersonal conflicts among the crew and inhabitants of the station (unlike past shows), and it also introduced story arcs that stretched across entire seasons, such as the Dominion War.

Political intrigue, occupation, terrorism, and galactic conflict were all part of DS9 's seven-season run. While not as highly rated at the time as TNG , DS9 has been cited by many fans as  the best Trek series of all . The two that followed in its wake — Star Trek: Voyager (1995-2001) and the prequel show Star Trek: Enterprise (2001-2005) — weren't as acclaimed, and the latter's cancellation after just four seasons began a 12-year drought of Trek on TV.

Welcome to the Kelvin Timeline (May 8, 2009)

Seven years after the last movie to feature the Next Generation cast (2002's poorly received Nemesis ) and four years after Enterprise went off the air, Star Trek was reinvented again — this time by Lost and Fringe creator J.J. Abrams as a major feature film that would tell the origin story of the classic Star Trek cast.

Abrams and his team came up with a brilliant concept. Certain events in their story would create an alternate reality — dubbed the Kelvin Timeline — in which their Trek characters could forge their own adventures while preserving the original canon as the "Prime" universe. This also allowed for one last appearance by Leonard Nimoy as Spock Prime, showing up to dispense crucial information to a young James Kirk while also symbolically passing the torch.

The cast of Abrams' Star Trek was what made it work. Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy gave this new Trek an energy and freshness that had been missing for a while.  Critics and  audiences responded favorably, with the film earning an astonishing $386 million. While the next two Kelvin films — 2013's  Star Trek Into Darkness  and 2016's  Star Trek Beyond  – were, respectively, a  half-baked remake of The Wrath of Khan and a  box office underperformer , the 2009 Star Trek remains an exciting and bracing entry in the series.

Leonard Nimoy lived long and prospered (Feb. 27, 2015)

Leonard Nimoy, beloved by generations of fans as Mr. Spock,  died on February 27, 2015 at the age of 83 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While other revered members of the original Star Trek cast had passed before him — including James Doohan (Scotty) in 2005, DeForest Kelley (Dr. McCoy) in 1999, and Mark Lenard (Spock's father, Sarek) in 1996 — Nimoy's death hit especially hard. Not only was Mr. Spock arguably the most  well-known and popular character in Trek history, even more so than Captains Kirk and Picard, but Nimoy embraced his alter ago (after a  brief estrangement ) and advocated for Trek 's message of optimism, tolerance, and humanism until the end of his life.

While some of his castmates were hobbled in  their post- Trek careers by typecasting, Nimoy enjoyed a long and fruitful life afterwards that included more acting (on TV, in films, and on the stage), directing (including two Trek films and other non-genre work), writing (he authored two memoirs and several books of poetry),  music ,  photography and  activism . Yet with all these accomplishments to his name, he was and always shall be "our friend" — the logical, brilliant, loyal, and courageous Mr. Spock.

Star Trek: Discovery boldly goes into the future (Sept. 24, 2017)

After more than a decade with no new Star Trek on TV, CBS decided to launch its new streaming service, CBS All Access, with a  brand new Trek series called Star Trek: Discovery . Set  a decade before The Original Series , Discovery didn't quite look like a prequel but more like another  alternate reality version of Trek . The diverse cast was led by Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, who rises from mutineer to captain of the title ship amidst a war with the Klingons, conspiracies inside the Federation, and strange occurrences throughout the galaxy.

Discovery had a troubled lift-off and went through  several showrunners before settling down in its second season. Nods to the canon with new versions of Captain Christopher Pike and Mr. Spock — who also happens to be (surprise!) Burnham's adopted brother — either lured in or turned off some wary Trekkers, as well.

While Discovery has polarized the fan base , its success has led to a Trek resurgence on TV, with  Star Trek: Picard , a new animated show called Lower Decks , and at least two more series — including the Pike-Spock-centric  Strange New Worlds — in the works. Thanks to Discovery ,  Star Trek looks certain to boldly go where no movie or TV franchise has gone before.

Star Trek: How it Should have Ended

I really like these “How it Should have Ended” clips. They shine the light of obvious logic on movies just to show us what really should have gone on if it made sense. And then in situations were it didn’t make sense and there is no logic, they just swing the other way.

Check out how JJ’s Star Trek “should have ended”

“Turn of the Lense Flare Generators!!”

“I know right? I mean who designs a star ship that has bright lights shining in your face from ..every.. possible… angle” (that was a little taste of the Shatner there)

And that ending. That ends the debate.. or does it?

ThinkHero found it. Blame him.

I loved that and I am a big fan of both SW and ST. If only Kirk had orddered a reversal of polarity as the Death Star fired…

That’s awesome. How did you find this video?

Spock RUUULLLLEZZZZZZ

Their best ending! “We are gonna get so much crap for that.” lol

I like these HISHE segments also, but I wish they would stop using such awful music. I know they can’t use the original scores for copyright reasons, but surely there’s a better alternative out there.

I think thats the point, i think its supposed to be like a sloppy version of the original song

The “NEW” Trek was quite tasty.

never really took it seriously and couldn’t get into the new generation stuff. The classic T.V. series was the only one I cared for(and not really).

I grew up on that stuff but preferred the T.V. stuff like BattleStar Gallatica (original) and Buck Rodgers (that lady from Silver Spoons and the blue jumpsuit w/ cameltoe!)was more my speed.

that and STARWARS of course

Star Wars > Star Trek

This is actually a proven fact by most scientists.

Star Wars Prequels<Star Trek Reboot, as mutch as I love me some star wars over some star trek, I still gotta admit the star trek reboot was Light years better than the prequels.

Star Trek REBOOT probably was a little better than Star Wars Prequels, but still… lightsabers pwn phasers any day

The prequels got better reviews overall then the Star Trek movie, so YOURE the one light years away,

You should warp to my level =p

or whatever it is you guys do…

DIGITAL YODA.

that says it all, and ends this discussion.

BULLSHIT!!! Metacritic.com proves otherwise.

Metacritic is about as accurate as Rotten Tomatoes. Which is to say NOT at all. Film is subjective, but the lack of accountability for those mass reviews is shameless. People who don’t WANT to see the movie can vote negatively as a “review” and it counts.

When someone who has never seen the film has input to affect the score it has no integrity.

But yes, when the films came out there was a LOT of positive reviews for the Star Wars films and they were all well received. It wasn’t until later that the nerdrage seemed to have culled that tide back and the hate began.

John listed Attack of the Clones as his favourite Star Wars film for a good while there… and wont admit it now.

I hate Rotten Tomatoes. Im talking about overall reviews.

Besides, the money Star Wars has made rapes whatever Star Trek has made.

Not to mention Darth Vader would PWN any Star Trek character.

P.S. Digital Yoda.

Man, I hate gate campers!

Star Wars RULEZZZZZZZZZZZ

How It Should Have Ended is an Internet parody series depicting alternate endings for popular movies. It was started by Daniel Baxter and Tommy Watson, featuring Tina Alexander. The episodes are hand drawings given animation, and augmented with special effects and music. Each features an original "ending" that ranges from crazy awesome crossovers , to ridiculous and funny developments, to deconstructing it by simply shooting the villain or the hero , or taking a third, sensible action the characters didn't consider. It also hosts featurettes such as the Super Café Spin-Off , the Hero Swap crossover spinoff and some comics.

Tropes used in spoofs:

  • The '80s : The X-Men: Apocalypse episode is rife with '80s Hair , '80s-style civilian clothing, and there's an '80s-sounding synth pop song which plays over Quicksilver's Bullet Time scene and the end credits. Mystique transforms into Michael Keaton 's Bruce Wayne from the 1989 film at the very end.
  • Aborted Arc : Batman is troubled by those two or three bad dreams he had , and fears that Darkseid is coming to get the planet. Superman dismisses the whole idea: how would Darkseid do that, if Batman is about to be rebooted ? Batman does not care: the dreams demand an outcome, and fans will not rest until they see Batman fight through a Mad Max wasteland. Superman: Or we could just toss it up to bad dreams and call it a day and just move on with our lives.
  • Actually Pretty Funny : After Captain America gets fed up with Superman and Batman making fun of him, this happens: Cap: But wait! Shh! Do you guys hear that? [ Beat ] Batman: Hear what? Cap: Is that the Justice League calling? [beat] Superman: I don't hear anything. Batman: Yeah, me neither. Cap: Exactly! [Superman laughs] Batman: Whammo! Superman: Captain America burn!
  • Adaptational Heroism : Rexy in HISHE's dub of Jurassic Park (1993) . Albeit a clumsy, accident-prone one. Dr. Alan Grant: "The T-Rex saved us?! I'll bet that never happens again!"
  • Adaptational Intelligence : The scientist in Spider-Man 3 who passes the last button on the test that ended up turning Flint Marko into the Sandman has the good sense here to tell his coworkers to actually check on the "change in the silicon mass" before they continue.
  • Adaptational Villainy : Katniss in The Hunger Games . She chickens out at the last moment when she has to eat the Nightlock and doesn't show any remorse when Peeta dies.

  • Hollywood Board Games : "Transformers Play Battleship" has Optimus Prime and Megatron engage in, well, a Battleship game while discussing how is it even possible to produce a movie from a Board Game . At first, they are just playing like normal people — squinting their eyes at the tiny (for them) board while trying to divine what square to attack next and dejectedly sighing when they miss or get hit. Megatron, however, gets quickly derailed into a heated rant about the movie, which is lampshaded when he forgets whose turn is (or maybe he's trying to cheat) and when he mocks Optimus for being competitive. Optimus tries to get them back on track but eventually gets fed up and declares that Go-Karting with Bowser was a terrible idea.
  • The Wizard of Oz : The Wicked Witch is suddenly and unceremoniously killed almost right at the start of the film during her famous line delivery to Dorothy. Witch: "I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog t-! " ( Gets shot in the head ) Town Soldier: "Woah, you just killed her! How is it so?!"
  • Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: One of the first action sequences from the film, where Indy survives a nuclear test launch by hiding in a fridge, gets completely subverted where he comes out of the fridge burnt and horrifically mangled. Black Comedy at its finest. "I think I broke every bone in my BODY!!!"
  • Hurl It into the Sun : In the Batman v Superman video, the military decide that Superman clearly has Doomsday under control and there's no need to launch a nuke at them when they're already in orbit. Superman: [punching Doomsday] Aaaand... into the Sun!
  • Megatron jokingly asks if the aliens in Battleship look like the pegs from the game , and proceeds to rant about how some movies completely alter iconic designs. To highlight Megatron's hypocrisy, this video portrays him with the same design from the live-action Transformers movies, and Optimus Prime as his G1 incarnation (per the events of "How Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen Should Have Ended").
  • Batman and Superman always point out the various coincidences, luck or plotholes in most Superhero movies. But when it is pointed the same thing is happening in their movies, both of them give very lame excuses from "No it wasn't." to "It's only ok if I do it".

  • In their video for Inside Out , they use the method the brain workers used to send the Triple Dent Gum commercial memory to headquarters to send the core memories back, stabilize the islands of personality, and simply take the train of thought back to headquarters without any more islands collapsing and interfering, and also without Bing-Bong dying . Unfortunately, this also means that Joy never learns her lesson about why repressing Sadness is bad, Bing-Bong is brought back to HQ and appears to Riley again, traumatizing her and shattering her psyche, and she grows up to be a 31-year-old womanchild who still sees her imaginary friend and still lives with her parents .
  • Their video for The Wizard of Oz shows how Why Don't You Just Shoot Him? being applied to everything isn't as fun as one might think. By simply shooting the Wicked Witch dead, Dorothy no longer has the impetus to go off to see the Wizard or learn the Aesop of "there's no place like home." Without this valuable journey and personal growth, Dorothy is unceremoniously sent back to Kansas. Her companions are also left in the dust with no way to achieve their respective dreams. The Wizard humorously pointing out that he never gave them what they wanted to begin with also serves as this: pointing out details like that when the characters clearly found closure and satisfying resolution to their arcs only ends up invalidating the emotional journey they had gone through.

  • X-Men: Days of Future Past has Xavier and Erik invite Quicksilver to accompany them to Paris, so he could help them get Mystique. • In Ant-Man , Hank Pym has a complex plan: have Luis make contact with Scott Lang when he goes out of prison, wait for him to fail to get a job, trick him into stealing and trying the ant-man suit, rescue him from prison when he's sent a second time... but Hope told him that it was pointless, and that he should simply show up when Lang goes out of prison, and recruit him right there.
  • Stealth Pun : Not quite stealth, but definitely a bit sneaky. In the Star Trek (2009) deleted scene, Scotty is spacing the Red Shirts and spare parts to lighten the ship. He's even pushing an antique cannon into the airlock. Scotty: Everything's got to go. Red Shirt: Yeah, but... even the cannon? Scotty: Especially the cannon .

  • Story-Breaker Power : Character powers that could ease the movies' plot usually end up being used in HISHE.
  • Captain America's Heroic Sacrifice is parodied to be this. Why couldn't Cap turn the plane around, circle for a while, find warmer water to crash land into, fly one of the bomb-planes as an escape, or try to find some other way to avoid crashing into freezing arctic water? The film proper never explains, and HISHE has a field day with it.

Because I'm an adult, and I can handle it.
  • Suddenly Speaking : In the Portal video, the Companion Cube actually talks, and seems none too happy about Chell throwing it in an incinerator, then trying to leave it behind in the rubble. The Companion Cube actually seems like the only "character" in the video with any spoken lines.
  • For the Captain America: The Winter Soldier video, Fury refuses to call in The Avengers for help for no discernible reason.
  • Usually averted, as the videos bring in other heroes that live in that world - for instance, The Suicide Squad has Superman showing up to toss Starro into space.
  • In Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory , the tour immediately ends after the scary tunnel, as the adults declare they're going home before things get even worse. Mr. Beauregarde even says Wonka will be hearing from his lawyer.

  • In one of their "Lego Movie" segments, it is demonstrated that Easily Forgiven doesn't really come into play for President Business, when he's convinced by Emmet to stop his evil plans. • The video for Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) sees King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra mock Godzilla for his inability to fly. Cue Godzilla pulling the same stunt he did in Godzilla vs. Hedorah and using his Atomic Breath to launch himself into the air and ram into the former two.

  • Crazy credits On some episodes, the closing credits show a still that is actually from the Star Trek blooper reel. It is a close-up of stunt man Bill Blackburn who played an android in Return to Tomorrow (1968) , removing his latex make up. In the reel, He is shown taking it off, while an off-screen voice says "You wanted show business, you got it!"
  • Alternate versions In 2006, CBS went back to the archives and created HD prints of every episode of the show. In addition to the new video transfer, they re-did all of the model shots and some matte paintings using CGI effects, and re-recorded the original theme song to clean it up. These "Enhanced" versions of the episodes aired on syndication and have been released on DVD and Blu-Ray.

How It Should Have Ended

  • View history

How It Should Have Ended ( HISHE ) is a YouTube company that makes parodies of popular movies, and making them funnier. Sometimes pointing out things they could have done, instead of just doing it the complicated way.

  • 1.1 Hishe Animation
  • 1.2 Hishe Dubs
  • 1.3 Super Cafe
  • 1.4 Villain Pub
  • 4.1 Hishe Dubs
  • 5 Collaborations with other YouTubers
  • 7.1 Subscriber milestones
  • 7.2 Video view milestones

Their animations are based on comedy, and parodies of real movies, such as Harry Potter , Jurassic Park , and Star Wars and their animations are always 2D.

However, HISHE does not always make movie parodies; sometimes they have fun with the movie characters, such as the "Super Café" and the "Villain Pub" or dubbing the movies.

Hishe Animation [ ]

How It Should Have Ended animations are the primary content of the channel. These humorously portray how a specific film should have been logically.

Hishe Dubs [ ]

Hishe Dubs is not the usual animations but rather dubbing the original movies key scenes. They first began with dubbing the original 'Blade Runner' movie as a way to celebrate the release of the new sequel.

Super Cafe [ ]

In Super Café, the episodes always feature Superman and Batman. They always brag to each other of who's better, or who's stupid. The Super Café is also always featured in a Superhero movie parody. Batman always frantically says, "I'm Batman!" Once, they made a How It Should Have Ended video featuring The Lego Movie (The Lego HISHE) . In that video , they featured the Super Café, since Batman and Superman were both in The Lego Movie.

Villain Pub [ ]

Villain Pub is the opposite of the Super Café as it features the villains, and in the Villain Pub, they don't just feature Superhero villains (the once featured the Wicked Witch and Voldemort, for example).

These have been featured in animation and dubs

  • Avengers: Endgame
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • A Quiet Place
  • Batman vs. Superman
  • Blade Runner
  • Jurassic World
  • Pacific Rim
  • Ready Player One
  • Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens
  • Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
  • Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
  • Transformers
  • Wonder Woman

History [ ]

Before the channel , two men named Daniel Baxter and Tommy Watson would always come back home from the

Tina Alexander and Daniel Baxter , co-founders of How It Should Have Ended.

theatre, and joke about the alternate endings about the move they have just watched. Daniel then came up with the idea of making short animations about their favorite movies. Tina Alexander came to help with their animation parodies. One day, their first animation, "How Matrix Revolutions Should Have Ended" was finished. Shortly after that, in 2005, The small team set up their website, How It Should Have Ended.com. Shortly after that, they also made their YouTube channel. They featured their animations on a few websites to get attention.

How It Should Have Ended was now born.

HISHE'S popularity then quickly grew, from subscriber to subscriber. They were then awarded as the "Best Internet Parody" in 2006.

These are repeated lines said in similar events.

  • " In the distant future "(in a ghostly voice) - during time skips or futuristic scenes.
  • -" No "-" Aw, come on! Pretty please? "-" Okay " -when a character agrees to do something they just disagreed upon.
  • " I'm a spaceship " - whenever a spaceship is shown.
  • " Foreshadowing " - when a character does something that will later result in a climax scene.
  • " That's dumb. You're dumb " - said sarcastically when a character in a movie talks about doing something weird or stupid.

Collaborations with other YouTubers [ ]

In addition, HISHE and Screen Junkies co-produced a series called 'After Credits' - some episodes are were published on the HISHE channel, but others were published on the Screen Junkies Plus streaming service.

  • In How The Amazing Spider-Man Should Have Ended , Stan Lee himself voiced his animated version.
  • Star Wars 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, and 3 came out in that order on HISHE, just like the movies in real life.

Hershon's career as hand double in the film and television industry was cut when he, following an innocent car accident and a broken shoulder, was not able to stop chattering while his hands were photographed. He was not able to work as Don Johnson 's hand double on Miami Vice and also had to stop working as double for Gerald McRaney on Simon & Simon . The consequence were no further jobs. [1]

One last scene for Steve Hershon, eyeing William Shatner in the final episode

Hershon was interviewed by film maker Ryan Palmieri for the 2012 short documentary The Hands of Hollywood on which he talked about his career and the cut. [2]

Hershon again interviewed by Bryan Kreutz and Lili Fox-Lim in 2023 for the television talk show series A Captain's Log on which he pointed out Star Trek first assistant director Rusty Meek took a liking to him bringing him to work in every other second season episode. Hershon then articulated that he walked past William Shatner in the corridor while working on the final Original Series episode while discussing many other Hollywood career highlights. [3]

‘Star Trek’ Origin Story Movie Will Be Set Decades Before 2009 Film

CinemaCon 2024: The new project will be produced by longtime “Star Trek” steward J.J. Abrams

Paramount Pictures is ready to boldly go (again).

After rumors circulated earlier this year, Paramount officially announced a new “Star Trek” prequel film on Thursday, this time taking place decades before the original 2009 “Star Trek” feature.

“Andor” director Toby Haynes will direct from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith (who is also writing another hotly touted CinemaCon title, the third “Now You See Me” film). J.J. Abrams is returning to produce.

But then again, we’ve heard about a new “Star Trek” movie before.

During the run-up to “Star Trek Beyond” in 2016, it was revealed that a fourth film would reunite Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk with his deceased father (played, once again, by Chris Hemsworth). A year later, Quentin Tarantino approached Paramount about doing a “Star Trek” movie – this time as an R-rated gangster movie (based, in part, on the 1968 episode of the original series “A Piece of the Action”). In 2018 S.J. Clarkson, a TV vet who would eventually direct “Madame Web,” was hired to direct the fourth film in the Abrams-verse, but salary disputes led to Pine and Hemsworth leaving the project. That version was canceled in 2019 and Tarantino stated in 2020 that he wouldn’t be making his “Star Trek” either.

In November 2019 “Fargo” creator Noah Hawley was hired to write and direct a new “Star Trek” film based on his version of the series. A year later, this movie was canceled by new Paramount Pictures president Emma Watts. In 2021 “Star Trek: Discovery” writer Kalinda Vazquez was hired to write a version based on her original pitch, but a separate script was being developed by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The studio even set a summer 2023 release date for a new “Trek” (which “Trek” was the question).

In 2021 that release date was pushed to Christmas 2023, under the direction of “WandaVision” director Matt Shakman. Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires were brought on to retool the script. In early 2022 it was announced that the stars of the three previous “Star Trek” installments in the Abrams-verse would all be returning, although it was later reported that the actors had not entered negotiations to return.

In 2022 Shakman left “Star Trek” to join Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four.” But just last month Steve Yockey was hired to write a fourth “Star Trek” movie.

Now, we are finally getting word of another film in development, with another writer/director team. But it’s not the first time that a “Star Trek” prequel script has been floated, as Erik Jendresen, cowriter of “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning,” had submitted a script for “Star Trek: The Beginning” before J.J. had taken over and pitched his 2009 version. It depicted the Earth-Romulan War.
