The Hives Announce North American Tour in 2024

by Em Casalena April 1, 2024, 12:08 pm

The Hives are going to be busy bees this year with an extensive Europe and UK tour, and they’re also going to be opening on multiple dates for Foo Fighters’ Everything Or Nothing At All Tour. Luckily for American fans, they’ve also just announced a decently-sized North American tour, slated to start after the first leg of their European tour in July.

Videos by American Songwriter

The Swedish rock band is going to trek across the US and Canada, and it doesn’t look like any opening acts for the last leg of the tour have been announced. The trek will promote the band’s most recent album, The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons.

The first US stop on the upcoming Hives 2024 Tour will be on July 19 in New York City at Citi Field with Foo Fighters. The last date of the tour will be October 2 in Atlanta, Georgia at Tabernacle.

The presale event for this tour will start on March 3 at 10:00 am local. You can learn more about the presale and get your code by signing up for the band’s newsletter . Ticketmaster will also be hosting a Live Nation presale event as well.

General on-sale for the Hives 2024 tour will start on April 5 at 10:00 am local. If your chosen tour date has sold out, we recommend checking out what’s available on Stubhub . You might get lucky and find some tickets that are cheaper than face value, too!

Band in the USA: The Hives unveil fall North American tour

hives on tour

Everyone has their kink, and here is one that may further divide this great United States of America: Do you prefer The Hives outside or indoors? Luckily, Boston has the option of both in this blessed 2024, as the Swedish rock and roll dynamo have unveiled a fall North American tour of venues after galavanting with Foo Fighters across America’s sports stadiums this summer.

Important for our regional business: That already-announced July 21 swing at Fenway Park with Dave Grohl and Co., and the new option, with a roof overhead: A September 25 throwdown at Roadrunner in Brighton. Tickets to the former are on sale now; tickets to the latter hit Thursday (April 4) at 10 a.m. local time.

The reason for this frenzy of Hives activity is obvious: The Hives will be out on the road supporting last year’s The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons,  the band’s first album in more than a decade. Revisit it below ahead of the full run of shows here in North America.

So freaking good. I’ve been a fan for 15 years, saw them for the first time last night and it was really everything I could have dreamed. They were engaged with the crowd, had high energy and played some amazing songs

They absolutely tore it up. The venue was great and the crowd had their moments both good and bad. Wasn’t sure what to expect, but they exceeded all expectations. One of the best shows that I’ve seen this year.

michael-wiber’s profile image

The Hives do not simply perform, they attack. The unconventional Swedish rockers perform often in formal attire giving them a sinister Clockwork Orange appearance at times. It is a strange convention for a band who perform in such an energetic manner to have adopted as you imagine the group must really struggle to move in their finest dinner outfits.

They have the crowd onside from the offset with a raucous version of 'Come On!' that cements their intent and proves they are here to really showcase why they are such an exciting group. They cram their very finest material into a concise, pacy set as frontman Pelle Almqvist encourages the crowd to dance, jump, sing and cheer along with the anthemic show. They are more than obliged to do so for favourites such as 'Hate to Say I Told You So' and 'My Time Is Coming'. It is the last track though 'Tick Tick Boom' that best showcases the frantic, bizarre world of The Hives and the atmosphere achieved is one of complete uniqueness.

The Hives 2023 press photo

On the eve of a 12-date UK tour by The Hives – the much-travelled garage rockers from Fagersta, Sweden once hailed by Spin magazine as “the best live band on the planet” – frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist discusses last year’s The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons , the group’s sixth album in total and their first full-length one in a decade.

Alt

Next year marks thirty years of The Hives. By their very nature, few garage bands survive for that long.

The secret of staying together is… just don’t break up. People assume that this is a functional band, but we can be as dysfunctional as you like. Just don’t break up.

The back story behind The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons – the mysterious disappearance of the band’s so-called founder, sixth member and songwriter, whose absence left no new material for a decade – was pretty ingenious.

You’re implying a lot of things by saying it’s ingenious.

So the story isn’t true?

I’m not going to bite. I wish we had released four albums in that time [since Fitzsimmons ‘vanished’], but it didn’t happen. It’s like we fell into a rift in the power-space continuum. Ten years later we were back with new music.

There was even a celebration of Randy’s life in London, complete with a custom-branded Hives hearse and coffin.

Yeah, yeah. There was flowers and all that stuff. We are hoping that he feigned his own death, so we tried to tease him out of the woodwork.

In your gut, do you think we have seen the last of Randy Fitzsimmons?

I’m hanging on to a sliver of hope that he’s still alive. But things are looking pretty grim, unfortunately.

Classic Rock ’s review of The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons dared to suggest that its limelight-shunning subject is actually the alter-ego of your brother Nicholas Arson.

Twenty years ago the Swedish tax authorities investigated Randy and traced the money to Nicholas, but that’s false. It was conducted by a pretty lazy team of private investigators.

The album wasn’t too shabby. We described it as “twelve garage-rock buzz-bombs that could have detonated at any time during The Hives’ mid-2000s peak”.

I was very happy with the reviews. I’m sure there were people that didn’t get it, but at this point they have probably given up trying to bring us down. Even those that are vaguely interested in what we do, they seemed to like it. It’s not for everybody, and it’s not supposed to be.

In the album’s press release, you boast: “We don’t do ‘pretty good’.The world has enough okay rock music. We’re only here to play fantastic rock music.”

It’s a goal that we set ourselves, and it took ten years to achieve it – a complete waste of time that makes absolutely no sense, but it’s the only game we have.

Do you hear a lot of The Hives in any of the newer bands that are coming out?

Since we broke through, yeah I do. When we were kids there were bands like the Ramones and Motörhead , but now we have been canonised too. Now we are one of those bands. And I’m very proud of that.

You’re playing some good venues, including Hammersmith Apollo in London. Is the set for this tour based on the new record?

You should expect to hear at least half of those songs, and the rest is, like, greatest hits.

For anybody who’s never seen the show but might be considering buying a ticket, can you give a flavour of what to expect?

Imagine a regular rock show but there’s more of everything: it’s faster, louder, we jump higher and we scream more.

The Hives have shared stages with big names including AC/DC and the Rolling Stones. What remains in terms of boxes still to be ticked?

Not a lot. I’ve met all my heroes. I’ve played guitar for Iggy Pop . Now I’m reaching a ripe old age where I become the village elder and hope that people look at me the same way.

The Hives' UK tour begins at the O2 Academy in Leeds on March 27. For full dates and ticket availability – most shows are already sold out – visit The Hives' website .

The Hives announce UK tour for first “franchised” cover bands

"As the very first band in the world we have spawned off into several because of the eternal and insatiable demand for Hives shows"

The Hives have announced the first UK tour of their first-ever “franchised” cover bands.

  • READ MORE:   The Hives: “There’s nothing more depressing than adult rock music”

The Swedish five-piece shared a statement last year encouraging fans to sign up to put on their own tribute shows and uncover “rewards” . “THE HIVES FRANCHISE NEEDS YOU,” they began. “We have arrived at a point where The Hives can no longer keep up with public demand for concerts.”

They continued: “This is where you come in. Help us create a world where The Hives are playing in every city, all the time. Let’s make business together and rock’n’roll. Sign up now and register your interest. Many rewards wait in store. We have spoken”

Today (March 19), the band have shared news of their first “Franch-Hives” shows comprised of The Hives tribute bands. “The Hives have Franchised! As the very first band in the world we have spawned off into several because of the eternal and insatiable demand for Hives shows,” began their post on their official Facebook account.

The Hives have Franchised! As the very first band in the world we have spawned off into several because of the eternal… Posted by The Hives on  Tuesday, March 19, 2024

“We are delighted to share news of our first Franch-Hives shows,” they continued. “Prepare for this Hives-but-other-people fantasticness, those attending our shows in Nottingham, Brighton and Manchester. You, the public, have come forth to play pre and post The Hives shows as a start of what will surely be a worldwide eternally successful business model.”

The Hives also noted that the real band – comprised of Pelle Almqvist, Nicholaus Arson, Vigilante Carlstroem, Chris Dangerous and The Johan and Only – will not be playing at these shows. They will only be playing their normal shows which are currently sold out.

The “Franch-Hives” shows will commence at the Saltbox in Nottingham on March 29 as a pre-party. Tickets to that show will be £8 in advance and £10 at the door. The Main Offenders are set to play that date.

The following two gigs will take place on April 3 at Brighton’s The Hope & Ruin and April 6 at Manchester’s Disorder. They will both be free of charge. The Hive Fives will play at Brighton’s gig and The B Hives will play in Manchester.

The Hives have previously performed with their own cover bands. Last August, frontman Pelle Almqvist joined Lancashire stoner rock band Sky Valley Mistress as they performed some of The Hives’ greatest hits at a signing session in Lancashire – watch footage of the moment  here .

They also  spoke to  NME   earlier this year, with Almqvist calling  Arctic Monkeys   “the only good really popular band.”  “We toured with them in South America about 10 years ago and had a great time, so I’m really happy they wanted us back,” he said. “It’s a really great tour to be on; it’s really fun. I think Arctic Monkeys are fucking amazing. They’re the only good really popular band – and that’s not easy to do.”

Elsewhere, the band were announced as a support act for both Green Day  and  Foo Fighters ‘ upcoming stadium tours. They are also set to kick off their UK and Ireland tour later this month . Find all dates below and get your tickets  here :

The Hives 2024 tour dates are:

MARCH 27 – Leeds, Leeds Academy 28 – Newcastle, City Hall 29 – Nottingham, Rock City 30 – Wolverhampton, The Halls

APRIL 1 – Glasgow, Barrowland 2 – Bristol, Academy 3 – Brighton, Brighton Dome 5 – Cardiff, Great Hall 6 – Manchester, Academy 8 – Dublin, Olympia 10 – Norwich, UEA 13 – London, Eventim Apollo

Their latest release was ‘ The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons ’ which marked their first new  music after an eleven-year hiatus.

It received four stars from NME  upon release: “The Hives zapped straight back into the only mode they know: pure pandemonium. It’s about time new generations received this healthy dose of old school Hives, packed with the same intensity, goofiness – and of course, the matching black and white suits.”

Is the big dumb rock show making a comeback? With the popularity of bands like Måneskin on the rise, guitar-heavy rock could be awakening from its dormancy. Or are groups like the Hives, now on tour in support of new record, The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons , seen as nostalgia acts circa 2023, relics of a bygone era filling a certain niche? Vaulted into the limelight as part of the early ‘00s garage rock revival, we haven’t heard much new material from the Hives since 2012’s Lex Hives , beyond a few singles. Though the pandemic is likely to blame for some of the years off, many of the Hives’ contemporaries have since broken up or just aren’t as popular these days. But with bands such as Viagra Boys and the Fontaines D.C., now is a great time for the Hives to return.

The Hives wisely decided to play smaller, more intimate venues on this tour and made the right choice in Mississippi Studios, one of Portland’s best clubs. During the 15-song, hour-long set, the sold-out crowd sang, danced and moshed along as the Hives played a concert split between Randy Fitzsimmons songs and older favorites. After a short prelude of Chopin’s “Funeral March,” the band took the stage and ripped into new single, “Bogus Operandi.” The crowd shouted the lyrics, proving that the Hives are still making hooky ear candy that people care about. But you could go to a Hives show without knowing a single lick and still get swept up in the fun and energy.

Though now firmly planted in middle age, frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist can still command the audience with the virility of a younger man. He spent much of the show flitting about the stage, climbing onto his monitor and roaming about the audience. He also knows how to control the crowd, whether he’s spewing banter that must be scripted but is so out there that you wish it wasn’t (“It’s the Hives! The world’s only omnipotent rock band. That means we are very potent. And can also do anything without setting our minds to it” or “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve finally arrived at the crossroads of the Hives show. The point where I realize that I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK I’M TALKING ABOUT!!! And that’s good news for you. From now on, the show is 27% better.”) or commanding folks to clap or shut up.

Dressed in matching black suits adorned with white patches that glowed in the dark, the Hives channel American garage rock with a touch of Southern-fried attitude through a Swedish sensibility. Almqvist’s English is almost perfect, but not quite, adding a charming flavor to the one-liners he flings out between songs, often with one hand on his hip and a big grin on his face. Flanking Almqvist were four original members of the Hives, minus original bassist Dr. Matt Destruction who left the band for health reasons in 2013. Guitarist Nicholaus Arson matched his brother Almqvist’s energy with wide-eyed fury, even crowd surfing at one point while drummer Chris Dangerous pounded his kit. Rhythm guitarist Vigilante Carlstroem, now sporting a thick gray beard, held things together with bassist The Johan and Only. As the evening devolved into a friendly mosh pit, a fan in the packed audience floated by in a getup similar to the ones worn by the Hives themselves.

It didn’t matter whether the song was old or new, the appreciative crowd went crazy for the duration of the show. Hits like “Hate to Say I Told You So” and “Walk Idiot Walk” came early in the set, shots of energy among the newer material. But the new songs held their own, including the one that ended the first set, “Countdown to Shutdown.” Portland crowds are known to be timid or disinterested, but Almqvist wasn’t having any of it as he told folks to applaud and berated them for stopping too soon. He has the frontman act dialed and he’s not modest to tell you why. When a technical issue arose with the drumkit, Almqvist began talking and said it was his job as the frontman to make shit up to talk about whenever tech difficulties arose.

The hour went quick, and the audience wanted more. The Hives did a two-song encore of the minute-long “Come On!” and “Tick Tick Boom” but as they did a curtain call to Carly Simon’s “No One Does It Better,” the crowd still cheered and begged for more music. It wasn’t too bad and that’s the best part of this Hives show: there was no overstayed welcome, no bloat. Instead, it was a quick-hit rock ‘n’ show that got down to the nitty-gritty basics and anyone who has the chance to see the Hives on this intimate tour will likely attest that when done right, rock ‘n’ roll should never die.

About the Authors

Frank Linton and Phil Frank collectively have 30 years of beekeeping experience. They each built and maintain glass observation hives where people can see what busy bees do. Some museums and nature centers have similar exhibits, but what was missing was a Hive Tour book to help people FIND their way in a bee’s world. This book was created to help those visitors, and for everyone interested in honey bees.

Phil Frank is a science journalist and TV producer, writer, and director of non-fiction films. His programs have been seen on CNN, Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, Science Channel, A&E, Travel Channel, Headline News, History Channel, TLC, NYTimes website, Washington Post website, and international channels. While producing a National Geographic program about mass animal die-offs, Phil became fascinated by honey bees. In 2014, he started his first hive. Now he has 15 hives on his deck, and one glass walled hive in his kitchen ( link to video ) where he studies busy bees year round. Phil developed and runs websites for the Maryland State Beekeepers Association and Maryland’s Montgomery County Beekeepers Association . He designs beekeeping curricula and teaches honey bee biology for beekeepers.

Frank Linton

Frank Linton started keeping bees in glass observation hives in 2005, and now keeps a few colonies of honey bees near Washington DC. He is an  EAS-certified master beekeeper . He runs three honey bee-related websites and hosts the I nternational Colony Monitoring Technology  conferences. He writes articles for  Bee Culture  and the  American Bee Journal , and speaks at local, regional, and international bee conferences. Homesteading conference will be on April 27 in Canyon

Conference focuses on latest trends in homesteading.

April 11, 2024

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is hosting the Homefront Conference for those interested in learning about homesteading on April 27 in Canyon.

A person holds a bee hive comb at an apiary. Bees are flying around the comb and person.

The conference will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Cole Community Center, 300 16th St., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. The cost to attend is $35, and individuals can preregister at   https://tx.ag/HomefrontConference . The deadline to preregister is April 24.

The registration fee includes conference attendance, door prizes, swag bag and a catered lunch. Jessie and Layton Schur, owners of Schur Family Farms and The Frontier Market, Plainview, will be the luncheon’s keynote speaker.

Batting Around: What -- if anything -- can MLB do to fix or stem the rash of pitcher injuries?

The early weeks of the season have already seen injuries to shane bieber, spencer strider, eury perez and more.

bieber-getty.png

Throughout the season the CBS Sports MLB experts will bring you a weekly Batting Around roundtable breaking down pretty much anything. The latest news, a historical question, thoughts about the future of baseball, all sorts of stuff. Last week we picked between MLB's Florida franchises . This week we're going to tackle the pitching injury epidemic.

Are there any steps MLB should take to confront pitching injuries?

R.J. Anderson: It depends on what you think is the root cause behind these injuries. If it's the pitch clock, they can adjust that. If it's the max-effort style of pitching, that's more difficult to legislate. I suppose what you can do is limit the amount of pitchers allowed on an active roster. That may force pitchers (and teams) to alter their approach. Now, the catch is that you're probably going to have some grim times until those adjustments are made. But I don't know that there's a quick fix here, not when the incentives all point toward the current approach. My guess is that it's a combination of factors and that makes it even more difficult to curb from the league's point of view.

Dayn Perry: I don't have a lot of good answers to this. I would like to see stricter roster limits on the number of pitchers teams can carry on the active roster. Part of my motivation for this is to get more length out of starters and return them to their status as "main character of a given game." However, this also would perhaps give teams incentive to develop/seek out those capable of bulk relief detail as opposed to maxed-out velocity for shorter stints. Ultimately, though, I think the de-emphasis of throwing as hard as you can at all times has to start at the lower levels, all the way down to youth baseball. Undertaking that would be difficult, hard to control, and take years to yield any results.

Matt Snyder: My short answer is I don't have the first damn clue.

I really don't think the pitch clock is the main culprit, as pitcher injuries were already on the rise for the last several decades. It's not like we have a control group to see if the clock itself caused injuries (that is: A 2023 version of Gerrit Cole with the pitch clock vs. the 2023 version of Gerrit Cole without it, so we could see if both or only the pitch clock version got hurt this spring).

I tend to believe the main issue is the pressure that is put on the arms by pitchers throwing so hard, repeatedly. They, collectively, throw harder than ever and that remains the case every single season. Some arms (such as Nolan Ryan in the past) are better built to withstand these pressures than others, but in general the human body just can't take this. How could you possibly put rules on throwing hard?

Plus, nowadays, players are rewarded for maxing out on every pitch and I just don't have any idea how that could possibly be solved with any sort of legislation -- certainly not at the big-league level or even in the minors, as the problem likely starts with the pitchers as kids.

How do you possibly disincentivize overthrowing in kids? Point them to someone like Matt Harvey's career trajectory? Harvey was a rock star for a short bit, started the All-Star Game, pitched in the World Series and made over $28 million in his career. I'm sure tons of parents living vicariously through their children would throw up the stop sign at that path, right? C'mon.

I just have no idea. I'm lost.

Mike Axisa: There's no easy answer because we don't know what the root cause is. It's not one thing, it's a combination of things, with the emphasis on velocity and spin (and thus max effort pitching) likely the biggest factor. I think any solution will have to start at the amateur level. High school and college kids train year-round now, and they come into pro ball with more wear and tear on their arms than anyone that young should have. This is a long-term concern that requires a long-term solution, not Band-Aids. The sport inherently rewards things that are bad for the arm (velocity, spin, etc.) and I just have no idea how you solve a problem when one of the primary causes lies in the sport's foundations. I don't know what MLB can do. This is something MLB and the MLBPA need to work together to address rather than be their usual adversarial selves.
