Hozier announces european unreal unearth tour.

Hozier announces European Unreal Unearth Tour

New album due August 18th

Hozier has announced the details of his European Unreal Unearth Tour set for this fall. The trek kicks off November 26th in Stockholm, Sweden and includes huge shows in Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena and London’s Wembley OVO Arena. Hozier will be joined by special guests The Last Dinner Party.

Tickets for the new tour dates go on general sale Friday, June 23rd at 9 am local time via Ticketmaster.

After a four-year hiatus, Hozier released his EP Eat Your Young on St. Patrick’s Day. The release included all new material and featured three songs – the title track, “All Things End,” and “Through Me (The Flood).”

In May, Hozier released the anthemic rock song “Francesca”, introducing listeners to the theme of Dante’s “Nine Circles Of Hell.” which recurs throughout his new music, and is explored in greater depth on his eagerly awaited third album Unreal Unearth , which will be released on Friday, August 18th.

Driven by the thought-provoking anthem “Take Me To Church,” which is now Diamond-certified in the USA, Canada, Germany and France; Hozier’s self-titled full-length debut bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200, the second biggest debut album of the year, and went on to achieve triple RIAA Platinum status. It enjoyed nine weeks at number 1 in his native Ireland, including spending an incredible 441 weeks in the Irish Top 50 charts. The album rose to No. 3 in the UK ahead of his third sell out UK tour, while both “Take Me To Church” and “Someone New” were singles from the album.

The follow-up to Hozier’s debut album, Wasteland, Baby! was released to massive critical acclaim in March 2019, entering the US Billboard Top 200 Chart at No. 1. The album’s 14 tracks, all original Hozier compositions, marked a major development in songwriting and subject matter. The most obvious is Hozier’s enlightened assessment of the global socio-political landscape. The multi-Platinum-selling album included the aforementioned single “Nina Cried Power” along with singles “Movement,” “Almost (Sweet Music)” and “Dinner and Diatribes.”

Last year Hozier teamed up with God of War: Ragnarök’s composer, Bear McCreary to write the song “Blood Upon The Snow,” which was featured in the soundtrack for the game. The same year he also released “Swan Upon Leda.” in a statement shared alongside the release, the star explained that he was sharing the track as a way of showing “solidarity” with those fighting for reproductive rights.

Andrew Hozier-Byrne grew up with music as the son of a blues musician and joined his first band at the age of 15. In 2012, Hozier began a solo career and released his debut single Take Me to Church a year later. The song reached number 2 in the Irish singles charts; it also attracted a lot of attention on the internet, partly because of the video for the song, which puts homophobia on film. While he released two more singles in Ireland, From Eden and Sedated, in spring and summer 2014 respectively, both of which reached the top 3 in the charts, the international release of Take Me to Church was being prepared. In the USA, first the EP and later the song were placed in the respective charts and it also reached the top 5 in Germany and many other European countries, reaching number one in Austria, Switzerland, Flanders and Sweden.

With over 22 billion streams worldwide, numerous platinum album certifications, multiple award nominations and wins, Hozier is considered one of the most important singer-songwriters of our generation.

The gig itself was incredible. Hozier and the family sound as pure and perfect as they do on recordings - it's insane how amazing they are! The engagement with the audience was on point too - Hozier is a warm and welcoming showman, with a definite ear for his audience and a love for performing that shows at every turn.

Kudos to David Keenan for opening the show. He has a unique style that I'm sure will serve him well in the years to come. Purchased the vinyl to play as soon as I got home.

As for City Hall itself, I have never been to watch music before (just stand-up shows or 'An Audience With...' nights) but I have to say, the acoustics are phenomenal. Because of the layout, everything feels intimate and the view was outstanding from most points in the auditorium.

A fantastic night!

I am absolutely in love with Hozier's voice and talent. It was my wish since years to go to his concert. That finally happened in Munich last night.

The location was great. Unfortunately the opening of the concert was far from anything good!

A solo singer (Kevin) who had a powerful voice but could not really be able to have audiences and at some point it got really boring after the second song... He sang 5-6 songs and you could feel that the crowd is getting resltess wants him to finish up and leave.

Then we had to wait for more than 45 min for the band to show up on the stage! I have never been waiting this long in all the concerts attended to so far! We were waiting, they did not bother to give some information or some sign... Finally when the band show up nobody even apologised for such a long delay!

Despite all these, Hozier / band was great on the stage! He sang for 2 hours and almost all the songs I was so looking forward to hearing them live! I do hope to see them again but this time with much better time management and organisation!

was out of this world, best night of my life. one drawback was when andrew encouraged people to leave their seats and come down to the stage, but the venue staff turned everyone away when they tried. was pretty disheartening and upsetting but didn't let it ruin my night.

andrew and the band were in top form, and got everyone out if their seats and standing and singing along (society has so beaten everyone down in terms of expressing themselves and caring what everyone else thinks that even among a thousand people who loved one man and his music, we found difficult to show it.) so thanks andrew for not taking us at face value (a theatre full of blinking goldfish in their seats for the first few songs, forgive us, i know that i was pretty overwhelmed. and i already have huge issues with confidence without adding 1k+ people to the mix)

love you hozier, hope to see you soon, and even meet you next time <3<3<3

Popular on Variety

The singer got on the phone with Variety to talk about the current wave of Hozier-mania just as he was kicking off a second year of shows in the U.S., by popular demand. (In Los Angeles, where his Hollywood Bowl show proved to be a tough ticket last summer, he’ll be doing three nights at the Kia Forum starting on Sept. 17.) Most of the shows are sold out, and scalper sales are discouraged through the exclusive use of the fan-to-fan Fair Market Exchange system, so if you have trouble easily landing a pair of seats, try not to be… too bitter.

It’s a really good feeling. I feel blessed to have the career that I do. It’s a very sweet landmark after 10 years of a career, and I feel very fortunate glad that I’m still able to do this and still finding new audiences. It’s encouraging, and a nice way to celebrate a 10th anniversary.

“Take Me to Church” came so close to being a No. 1, but people have by and large have not thought of you as a singles kind of guy, so much as they’re there for the album, or for the performance, not the one-off. So does it seem mysterious to you that the world suddenly gravitates to a single song?

I didn’t see it coming to this extent, for sure. I knew I wanted to release the song. I knew it was fun. It’s a song that did not (come out originally) because there was a choice between two songs for the album, and “Too Sweet” was kind of placed to the side. So I didn’t necessarily expect this kind of reaction. I think I kind of found a new fan base in the last couple of years, and maybe after the tour and after “Unreal Unearth,” maybe there’s more people who are just listening to the work. But this does feel maybe a little bit mysterious.

What’s a a really sweet thing for me is that it was the very same week that the last Irish artist got a No. 1. Sinead O’Connor was the last Irish artist with the No. 1 in the U.S., and that was 34 years ago. It was the year that I was born, and it was the very same charting week in April, 34 years ago. So, you used the word “mysterious” there. … I don’t know, there’s something very wonderful about that.

“Too Sweet” is a playful song. A lot of your material, people might associate a certain nobility with it. But this is not the most high-minded song you’ve ever done.

Oh, no, certainly not. I mean, it’s a song about somebody who wants to self-destruct and get trashed! You know, I’ve had a quiet laugh to myself about that. I’ve written songs that definitely deal with more complicated, more difficult themes, for sure. But I guess it’s something that’s fun and immediate and doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s part of its appeal. And it’s also why maybe initially, when the choice came of putting it on the album, I thought that maybe it wouldn’t have worked. But there you go.

The bass tones are amazing. Is there a secret sauce that made the song work, sonically?

Thank you. We took a really natural approach to that at a place in east L.A. called Sargent Recorders. We kind of took some early Peter Gabriel references on some of the tones, on the drums, some of those delays, et cetera.

Can you say what the choice was when you were picking what would make the “Unreal Unearth” album sequence — what the song was that you picked over this?

It’s a good thing that you made those picks at those respective times, because “Eat Your Young” felt important to that album.

Oh, thank you. Yeah, it’s worked out.

Did you always plan to do a kind of extras EP?

It sort of came about as the album was shaping up. There were a few songs in particular that my labels — both at home, my label Ruby Works in Ireland, and Sony Columbia —had as favorite songs from the sessions, which I wasn’t necessarily head over heels over, or just ones that I felt (could be let go) when it came to the push and pull of what was gonna make it. We knew we had some really good songs on our hands that people weren’t gonna hear if it wasn’t on the album. So I did want to release “Too Sweet,” and there was stuff there, especially my song with Alison Russell… I just did so much recording in that period that it wouldn’t have made for a terribly cohesive album, along with being overlong. So the idea developed as we were getting closer to the release that, OK, you know what, there’s stuff here that I would like people to hear and the label certainly would like people to hear. And so we’ll just come back around and we’ll do a couple of EP releases, and make sense of it that way.

You said EPs, plural, and fans have been speculating if there is another EP coming. So is there still another EP on the way?

I hope so. I’m hesitant to promise anything. But I’m planning to do so, I will say that. So hopefully; fingers crossed. We’re looking at that now, finishing up some mixes.

“Wildflower and Barley,” the song with Allison Russell — was she originally on it even when you first tracked it, or did you add her later?

Yeah, I wrote it in Wicklow initially, and Jeff Gitty (Gitelman) traveled over at some point during the pandemic, once orders were kind of slightly more open, and we sort of worked out the arrangement a bit more. And then between Wicklow and London, I had sort of recorded it as a duet, even in the demo form, but I didn’t have somebody to sing it with. But Allison is somebody who I’ve known for years and I’ve sang with many times on stage. She’s a dear friend and an artist who I have huge admiration and respect and love for. So, I asked if she would be up for it, and we cut it in L.A. at some point in late 2022. I always had it in mind as a duet and always really wanted to sing with Allison. So I’m delighted that we’re on the road together now, too. It’s all kind of just worked out in a really lovely way that we’re getting to sing it every night. Around the same time I had hopped on a song of Allison’s on her beautiful “Returner” album, and then I asked if she would join me on the duet for “Wildflower.”

It’s nice to see Allison get some additional recognition through this tour — her name is very large, just for starters, in the tour adverts we see on walls in Hollywood and places like that.

Speaking of Ireland, and returning to the EP, “Empire Now” is a much, much more serious track than “Too Sweet.” It seems to be referring to a hundred years of independence for Ireland. Is it right that, when you were choosing songs for “Unreal Unearth,” “Empire Now” was in the running to reflect the circle of violence?

Yeah, unfortunately there were just a lot of songs that could have made the circle of violence. And then I also considered “Empire Now” for the circle of greed; of course, it could possibly make sense in there. But either way, yeah, it was sort of pushed out towards the EP.

We’ve had a hundred years of independence, so the song is just really asking the question, of all of the problems from before the revolution, how those still linger. So it’s just sort of to reckon with the promise of Ireland’s 1916 revolutionary dream. Again, it’s really macabre, and it imagines this world where the dead are rising, and we’re having to contend with people spinning in their graves at such a rate that it’s destabilizing the ground. And the jokey solution is to just hook them up to generators and continue on and co-opt them in a new way to power the world we’re moving towards.

There’s so much turmoil in the world right now that, seeing you on tour last year, it felt like people were looking to you for the sense of a balm. Some people are just coming to shows for escapism, of course, but at the same time, you probably have a pretty soulful audience that is empathetic to troubled times. In some shows, you will say something that tries to speak to the times or the mood.

And then just to mention the fourth song on the EP, on the lighter side… “Fare Well” catalogs a list of things that you would not “fare well” in facing if it were your lot in life. In one of the verses, it’s “I wouldn’t fare well / A whale-swimmin’-up-Sumida-Gawa wouldn’t fare well / Critic-hopin’-to-be-remembered wouldn’t fare well…” I’m can’t speak to the Sumida Gawa reference, but I had to laugh at the reference to critics.

Sumita Gawa is a river in Tokyo. I guess the joke of that song is all the things that we do to try and feel good, or all the things that we attempt to do that are impossible, where ultimately they are futile attempts. And forgive me, I do play with voices that are cynical, in different ways — some more hopeful, some more cynical. “I’d are as well as a hedgehog would fare under a van wheel” is how I would fare in trying to feel good, and trying to come out of something feeling better. A whale swimming up Sumida Gawa wouldn’t fare well, and… forgive me for the line “a critic hoping to be remembered” wouldn’t fare well.

I think the critics of the world speak can take it, so it’s OK. Not to speak for all of them. But It’s an amusing line.

Thank you. A bit of fun.

Going back on tour this year, you could have stopped after one year, but you’re coming back to satisfy demand. Yet most of the shows quickly sold out, so you could probably come back around with the same tour in 2025 and still not really satisfy the demand.

Yeah, I just feel blessed. I am a little bit taken by surprise that, yeah, there’s this groundswell of people either switching onto the music or just enjoying it. I feel really, really lucky that we get to do these extra shows, and also that there’s new music that people are enjoying so much to bring into these shows. I’m looking forward to this year — I’m just delighted.

Taylor Swift is about to go back on tour: Here's what to expect on the Eras Tour in Paris

hozier europa tour

After a two-month break, Taylor Swift is revitalizing her titanic Eras Tour in Paris, and fans believe there are changes coming to the show.

If you are wondering where she's playing, if there will be changes and how to score tickets, here's everything we know.

And if you're new to the Eras Tour party, you can get caught up on the first 83 shows here .

When does the Eras Tour start again?

Swift kicks off the European leg of her tour on Thursday, May 9, in Paris. She will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, as well, in the City of Light.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

What are Taylor Swift's tour dates in Europe?

There are 69 shows left in the Eras Tour: 51 in Europe, nine in America and nine in Canada.

The European leg stretches from May all the way through a five-night stand at Wembley Stadium in London in mid-August.

See a complete list of international dates here .

After she wraps up in Europe, Swift will stop in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis before wrapping up in Canada.

See the remaining U.S. dates here .

What is the Eras Tour set list?

The Eras Tour has featured a massive 45-song set list you can check out here . But speculation is swirling it won't look the same when Swift takes the stage in Paris.

Will Taylor Swift add 'The Tortured Poets Department' to her set list?

The tortured poet has been on hiatus keeping her stamina up by releasing a double album of 31 tracks. The 2-hours-and-2-minutes project broke a number of Billboard records as the superstar did zero press to promote it. Fans flocked to stores and streaming services to listen to all the songs from "Fortnight" to "The Manuscript."

Although the singer has not confirmed whether her 11th era album will be added to her Eras Tour set list, she did post a YouTube shorts video with two scenes that sent Easter egg decoders into a frenzy. In one of the shots, the singer is next to a railing where a "TTPD" logo appears to be (at 0:11). In the succeeding shot, her back-up dancers perform holding canes and wearing top hats, something they have not worn previously.

Swift's dancers and bandmates posted to their Instagram stories as they left for France last week. The singer did not appear at two media events with her boyfriend Travis Kelce: the Kentucky Derby and a Formula 1 race in Miami , Florida. Patrick Mahomes, Kelce's friend and Kansas City's quarterback, attended the car racing spectacular with his wife, Brittany.

Can I still get Eras Tour tickets?

Swift's show is completely sold out in Europe and North America. There are resale sites with tickets, but be wary of scams. The best way to avoid getting swindled is continuously checking links on Swift's website . There are some for resale on the sites verified by her camp.

Singapore was a hotbed for fans who traveled thousands of miles only to get turned away at the venue. In Tokyo and Australia, last-minute ticket drops happened a few days — without announcement — ahead of the shows.

Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis — the three U.S. cities Swift is visiting in the fall — have some of the heftiest price tags with Canada closely behind. In may be cheaper to travel to Warsaw, Poland, or Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Here's a list of cities with the cheapest resale tickets, according to travel website Islands.com .

10. Vienna, Austria — total average cost: $1,089, safety score: 69.72

9. Cardiff, U.K. — total average cost: $1,061, safety score: 61.83

Who are the opening acts?

Paramore launched the Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona, in March 2023, so it's fitting the American rock band is opening the tour's second year. The act will open for Swift for 51 shows across Europe . The band was dubbed the 2024 Record Store Day global ambassador and surprised fans in Nashville the weekend following the release of "The Tortured Poets Department."

When the tour comes back to North America in October , Swift's opening act will be Gracie Abrams.

Where can I watch if I don't have tickets?

The Eras Tour is one of the first tours that has been followed, globally, by thousands of fans on digital platforms. Fans dedicate part of their concert experience to livestreaming as Swift performs. A few Swifties have learned how to host their own shows over social media including Tess Bohne , known as the livestream queen. Bohne goes live for (almost) every show pulling streams from Instagram and TikTok. When a livestream goes down, she fills the time with banter.

On YouTube, user @TaylorSwiftHockeyBro also livestreams the three-hour show, and on Twitch, @folkleric , is a host fans follow.

There is also an app, Swift Alert , that notifies fans who only want to watch certain eras like the acoustic, surprise set. The app sends out push alerts if there are any major announcements.

What secret songs are left?

For the past 83 shows, Swift has played an acoustic set she customizes at each stop with a guitar and piano performance. In 2024, the Eras Tour star added mashups of her songs for each stop. Here are the songs she has yet to perform:

 • "Taylor Swift" (debut album): "Mary's Song" and "A Perfectly Good Heart"
 • "Fearless": "The Way I Loved You," "Change," "Superstar," "We Were Happy," "That's When," "Don't You" and "Bye Bye Baby"
 • "Red": "Girl At Home," "Ronan," "Forever Winter" and "Run"
 • "1989": "Sweeter Than Fiction"
 • "Reputation": "I Did Something Bad"
 • "Lover": "London Boy," "Soon You'll Get Better" and "It's Nice to Have a Friend"
 • "Folklore": "Hoax"
 • "Evermore": "Happiness" and "Closure"
 • "Midnights": "Paris" and "Glitch"
 • "The Tortured Poets Department": all 31 tracks

Will Taylor Swift perform in 2025?

There have been many rumors that Swift will continue her show in 2025, but they are only rumors. Nothing has been announced for next year, and as of now, the tour will end in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Dec. 8.

If you’re a fan of Lana Del Rey, Lorde or Taylor Swift, there’s another artist you should look out for – Bleachers. This group is actually Grammy-winning producer Jack Antonoff’s solo project, which has been around long before he produced albums for big name artists like Swift, Del Rey and more. Bleachers has had their biggest year so far. Not only have they released their self-titled album this past March, they also performed both weekends at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. You can catch Antonoff on the road this summer on their “From the Studio to the Stage” tour across the U.S., or at his sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 4.

After kicking things off last month in Australia, Blink-182 will continue making their way across the globe, playing in South America this spring and across North America this summer.
What better way is there to celebrate the start of summer than with the queen of “hot girl summer” Megan Thee Stallion? Since becoming an independent artist last year after her departure from her previous labels, 1501 Certified Music and 300 Entertainment, she has shown that she is still at large and in charge. Her most recent singles, “Cobra” and “Hiss,” have reached critical success, with the latter becoming her first solo number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. China’s Xi Jinping begins first Europe tour in five years in France

Chinese president wants to repair ties with a sceptical Western Europe but faces questions over his stance on Russia’s war in Ukraine.

hozier europa tour

Chinese President Xi Jinping is on his first trip to Europe in five years, which is likely to be dominated by Russia’s war in Ukraine as well as economic strains between Beijing and Brussels.

The first stop will be France, with Xi due to hold talks in Paris on May 6 with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, before travelling south to the Pyrenees.

Eu’s von der leyen to urge ‘fair’ china competition in talks with xi, russia’s putin and china’s xi denounce us ‘interference’, is china’s economy in serious trouble, china’s xi warns west against economic ‘decoupling’.

After that, he will travel to Serbia and Hungary, two countries that have maintained close ties with Russia despite its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

According to Matt Geracim, the assistant director of the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub, the Chinese president is travelling to Europe with three goals: “repairing relations in Europe damaged by China’s support for Russia’s war on Ukraine, blunting the EU’s economic security agenda vis-a-vis China, and showcasing Beijing’s strong ties with its stalwart partners Serbia and Hungary.”

Here is all you need to know about Xi’s European tour, which continues until Friday.

The big picture

Beijing and Paris are marking 60 years since diplomatic relations were established, with France the first Western country to formally recognise the People’s Republic of China on January 27, 1964.

But the trip also comes amid a deteriorating global security climate, with the war in Ukraine now into its third year and at least 34,683 Palestinians killed in Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza .

France has said those two conflicts, particularly Ukraine where Beijing has professed neutrality but not condemned Moscow for its full-scale invasion, will feature prominently in the talks.

“Exchanges will focus on international crises, first and foremost the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East,” the Elysee Palace said in a statement ahead of the visit last week.

Macron has recently emerged as one of the most hawkish of the EU leaders on the continent’s security, and he will be urging Xi to put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin over Ukraine. In an interview with the Economist newspaper published last week, the French president argued the war was existential for Europe.

“If Russia wins in Ukraine there will be no security in Europe,” he said. “Who can pretend that Russia will stop there?” What security would there be, he asked, for neighbouring countries: Moldova, Romania, Poland, Lithuania and others?

To underline the unity of the European position, von der Leyen will also join Monday’s discussions, which are due to get under way just after 11am (09:00 GMT).

As well as the Ukraine war, Europe is also concerned about Chinese business practices and has initiated an investigation into China’s subsidies for electric vehicle manufacturers , amid concerns such payments are undermining competition and harming European companies.

A drone picture from Chasiv Yar, It shows destroyed apartment buildings and bomb craters.

Macron told the Economist that he would also convey to Xi why Europe needs to safeguard its own manufacturers and industries.

Ahead of Xi’s departure last week, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Beijing was ready to “work with France and the EU to take this meeting as an opportunity to make the China-EU relations more strategic, stable, constructive and mutually beneficial, promote steady and sustained progress in China-EU relations, and contribute to the prosperity of both China and Europe and a peaceful world.”

Following Monday’s summit, Marcon and his wife, Brigitte, will host Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, to a state banquet.

On Tuesday, Macron will take the Chinese leader to the Pyrenees mountains, where he made regular trips to see his grandmother as a child. The two couples are also expected to take a cable car up to the summit of the 2,877-metre (9,439 ft) Pic du Midi, a dark sky reserve.

After wrapping his trip in France, Xi will head to Serbia where he will arrive in Belgrade on the 25th anniversary of the bombing of the Chinese Embassy for talks with President Aleksandar Vucic. Three people were killed when Washington said it accidentally struck the compound during the NATO air campaign against Serb forces occupying Kosovo , in an event that triggered outrage and protests in China.

China has since emerged as the biggest single source of investment in Serbia, which is not a member of the EU, and prior to the trip Lin, the MOFA spokesperson, referred to the two countries’ ties as “ironclad”.

“The bombing remains a significant topic for Chinese officials, who use it to support narratives that question the values of liberal democracies,” Stefan Vladisavljev, programme director at Foundation BFPE for a Responsible Society wrote in an online analysis. “For Serbia, the visit presents an opportunity to strengthen its position as China’s main partner in the Western Balkans.”

Xi will then travel on May 8 to Budapest, the final stop on his European tour.

There he will meet Hungarian President Viktor Orban, the most Russia-friendly leader in the EU.

Hungary, whose policies have raised concern among other EU members, has become more closely aligned with Beijing and Moscow and recently signed a security cooperation agreement with China that allows Chinese police officers to work in areas where there are large populations of ethnic Chinese or which are popular with Chinese tourists, according to Zoltan Feher is a nonresident fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub.

Reports on such Chinese police stations have raised alarm in other parts of Europe, particularly among exiles and dissidents.

Hungary is also part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which it joined in 2015, and the two men are likely to discuss the ongoing construction of the high-speed rail between Budapest and Belgrade.

Ukraine war

Macron has spoken increasingly about the need to develop Europe’s own security architecture rather than rely on NATO and the US.

He has even suggested that France would be willing to send its troops to Ukraine, if Russia broke through the front lines and Kyiv asked for assistance.

China has long maintained it is neutral in the war, but Beijing and Moscow have deepened their ties since the full-scale invasion began, and Putin is expected to visit China this month.

Macron will be hoping to persuade Xi of the need for China to get more closely involved in efforts to secure peace as Switzerland organises a peace conference next month to discuss a 10-point plan put forward by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the end of 2022.

The Swiss say they have already invited more than 160 delegations, but it is not clear whether Beijing, which has also put forward a proposal for peace talks and deployed its own envoy in the region, will attend.

Russia has repeatedly dismissed the process, and insists a precursor for negotiations is that Kyiv give up the 20 percent of its territory that Russia currently occupies.

“We must continue to engage China, which is objectively the international player with the greatest leverage to change Moscow’s mind,” the French newspaper Le Monde quoted an unnamed diplomatic source as saying.

Human rights

Chinese state media have been reporting breathlessly on Xi’s arrival in Paris; the streets decorated with Chinese and French flags and groups of Chinese nationals welcoming their president.

But campaigners for Tibet and Xinjiang, where the United Nations says China may have committed crimes against humanity in holding some 1 million ethnic Uighur Muslims in re-education camps, were also out on the streets of the capital.

The EU imposed targeted sanctions on certain Chinese officials and companies over Xinjiang in March 2021, prompting anger in Beijing.

Human Rights Watch says while the French president did not raise the issue publicly on his visit to China last year, he should do so while Xi is in Paris and call for the release of those arbitrarily detained or imprisoned including Ilham Tohti , an Uighur economist who was awarded the Sakharov Prize, Europe’s most prominent human rights award in 2019.

The human rights organisation said Macron should also raise the issue of Tibet, where some 1 million Tibetan children are being placed in boarding schools and separated from their language and culture, and Hong Kong, once the most free territory in China but now subject to two draconian security laws.

“President Macron should make it clear to Xi Jinping that Beijing’s crimes against humanity come with consequences for China’s relations with France,” Maya Wang, the acting China director at Human Rights Watch said in a statement. “France’s silence and inaction on human rights would only embolden the Chinese government’s sense of impunity for its abuses, further fuelling repression at home and abroad.”

On April 30, Macron was pictured at the Elysee Palace with Penpa Tsering, the president of the Tibetan government-in-exile, on the sidelines of a ceremony to honour former Senator Andre Gattolin, a longtime supporter Tibet, who was awarded the Legion d’Honneur.

Tibet protesters rally in Paris as Xi Jinping arrives. They have placards reading 'Free Tibet' and are carrying Tibetan flags. There's a statue behind them.

Penpa Tsering presented the French president with a signed photo of his 2016 meeting with the Dalai Lama and “urged him not to forget Tibet”, according to a report the Central Tibetan Administration.

“We understand that the agenda between the two presidents will be dense given the many international crises such as in Ukraine and in the Middle East, but this must not be done at the expense of exchanges on human rights, which are in a deplorable state throughout the country as well as in Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet, where a latent conflict has been going on for over 60 years and poses a threat to regional and international security,” Vincent Metten, the EU policy director for the International Campaign for Tibet said in a statement.

In Freedom House’s 2024 report on Freedom in the World, Tibet’s overall score was zero out of 100; the lowest in at least eight years.

Maryse Artiguelong, the vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), said: “The conflict in Ukraine highlights the threat posed to international order and security by authoritarian regimes such as Russia and the People’s Republic of China. Their aggressive foreign policies and repressive domestic policies are inextricably linked: Anyone who does not oppose China’s human rights violations risks one day facing its aggressive foreign policy.”

Xi’s European tour: where is Chinese leader going and what are visit’s aims?

Emmanuel Macron and Viktor Orbán among leaders Xi is meeting, with several key issues on the table

China’s president, Xi Jinping , has begun a three-country tour of Europe – his first state visit to the continent in five years – at a time when China-EU ties are under strain from trade disputes and Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Where is Xi visiting and who will he meet?

The Chinese leader’s visit begins on Monday in Paris, where he is meeting the French president, Emmanuel Macron, for a day of talks that will include a trilateral meeting with the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen , and a state banquet at the Élysée Palace in the evening.

On Tuesday, Macron will accompany Xi to the Tourmalet pass 2,000 metres up in the Hautes-Pyrénées mountains, an area where the French president spent childhood holidays visiting his grandmother, for a day of less formal discussions. The two last met in April 2023 during a three-day state visit to China by Macron .

On Wednesday, Xi will travel to Belgrade for talks with Serbia’s president, Aleksandar Vučić, and on Thursday he will go to Budapest where he will meet Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán . Both countries are pro-Russia and big recipients of Chinese investment.

What is the purpose of his visit?

Officially, Xi’s visit to Paris is to mark 60 years since diplomatic relations were established between France and China: France was the first western country to formally recognise the People’s Republic of China, on 27 January 1964.

His visit to Belgrade coincides with the 25th anniversary of the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Serbia , when three people died after a US strike accidentally hit the compound during Nato’s air campaign against Serb forces occupying Kosovo.

Analysts have said that in his meetings with Macron and von der Leyen, away from the ceremonies, Xi will mainly be aiming to lobby against the EU’s anti-subsidy investigations, particularly on electric vehicles, and on stabilising diplomatic relationships.

In Serbia , where China is the biggest single source of inward investment, he will hope to play up Beijing’s anti-US, anti-Nato agenda – one reason why China has maintained its support for Russia since its invasion of Ukraine.

In Hungary, Xi will underline the close economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries, including in security cooperation, and discuss progress on China’s belt and road initiative , which includes a high-speed Budapest-Belgrade rail link.

Hungary, a vocal supporter of China that has blocked some EU motions criticising Beijing on human rights, has Huawei’s largest base outside China and will soon host the carmaker BYD’s first European factory.

What big issues will be on the table?

Overshadowing the visit are EU concerns over China’s support for Russia two years into war against Ukraine, and Beijing’s concerns over the bloc’s economic security agenda, including the threat of heavy tariffs on Chinese imports.

Macron and von der Leyen will call on China to stop exports to Russia of “dual-use” and other technologies aiding Moscow war effort. Beijing claims to be neutral in the conflict but China-Russia trade has helped offset western sanctions on Moscow.

after newsletter promotion

Beijing, for its part, aims to head off the threat of European tariffs on Chinese EVs after an EU investigation into state support for the industry in China. Studies put China’s subsidies at between three and nine times those of other major economies.

Human rights groups have said the issues of Tibet and Xinjiang , where the UN has said China may have committed crimes against humanity by placing up to a million ethnic Uyghur Muslims in re-education camps, must be raised.

What is the outcome likely to be?

Most analysts doubt that the EU and its messages on the looming trade dispute and Chinese support for Russia over Ukraine will make much headway with Xi, whose visit seems designed to exploit the bloc’s internal differences.

China’s economy is facing some difficulties and the US is increasingly reticent about opening up to Chinese companies, meaning the EU could have some leverage, but its 27 members are not fully aligned on China policy, undermining their influence.

Macron wants a more aggressive EU stance on subsidies and has warned that the bloc risks falling behind without one, but other leaders, such as Germany’s chancellor, Olaf Scholz, stress the importance of the Chinese market for their own exporters.

Overall, said Janka Oertel, of the European Council on Foreign Relations, Xi’s Paris visit is “unlikely to have a significant impact on Chinese behaviour”. And Shen Dingli, a Shanghai-based analyst, said the Belgrade and Budapest stops were part of China’s efforts to deepen divisions within the west.

PGA Tour a “lonely place” compared to European circuit, per DP World Tour pro

Scotsman Robert MacIntyre, who earned PGA Tour status this year, referred to the American based circuit as a “lonely place.”

Robert MacIntyre, PGA Tour, THE PLAYERS

Thanks to his superb play on the DP World Tour a season ago, which included a runner-up finish to Rory McIlroy at the Genesis Scottish Open , Robert MacIntyre earned PGA Tour membership for the 2024 season.

But playing on the PGA Tour has not been the best experience for MacIntyre, compared to the comfortable confines of the DP World Tour.

“It’s completely different,” MacIntyre explained to Bunkered , a Scottish golf publication.

“When you’re on the DP World Tour, it’s very friendly. Everyone is together. We’re all traveling the world. If we’re struggling with certain things, we speak to folk around us.”

So far this season, MacIntyre, who played in his first Ryder Cup in 2023 and did not lose a match, has only two top-10 finishes to his name. He tied for sixth at the Mexico Open and eighth at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Robert MacIntyre, Ryder Cup

But he missed the cut at The Players Championship and did not qualify for The Masters . He also has not met the criteria to play in any Signature Event so far this season. Instead, he tied for 32nd at the Puerto Rico Open, held when Scottie Scheffler triumphed at Bay Hill.

MacIntyre will also play at the Myrtle Beach Classic this week, not the Wells Fargo Championship , which bodes an elite 69-player field.

“You come out here to the PGA Tour, and it’s all so unfamiliar,” added MacIntyre.

“There’s less chatting. There’s less dinners. There’s just less of that big family feel that you get on the European Tour.”

The European Ryder Cup team specifically prides itself on team camaraderie and chemistry. By extension, those principles spread the DP World Tour, where the top European players rise through the ranks.

“Sitting in player dining, you do it in Europe and you’ve got all the Scottish boys, you’ve got all the British boys,” MacIntyre added.

Robert MacIntyre, PGA Tour

“A lot of the European guys, if you’re sitting on your own, they will come and join you... Out [on the PGA Tour], because you don’t know many folks, you don’t know them in that same kind of depth, they don’t come to sit with you. It does become a lonely place on the golf side of it.”

The golf courses are obviously different, too.

“It is what it is. You’ve got to get on with it. There are a lot of other things. New golf courses,” MacIntyre explained.

“Over here, they are pretty much all new, and then you’ve got the different grasses. Obviously, I was not brought up playing a lot of Bermuda, grainy grass, pitching, putting. It’s just completely different. But it’s a learning curve.”

Hopefully, MacIntyre’s experience of playing golf in the United States will improve as time passes. But for now, the Scotsman continues to struggle to grow accustomed to the difficulties of American professional golf—something that numerous European players have toiled with before and likely will do so in the future.

Yet, the Scotsman knows that plenty of opportunity awaits within the 50 states.

“It’s a great place to play golf. It’s obviously where the best players in the world are. It’s where you can make more money,” MacIntyre said.
