San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the United States and Texas’ number one tourist attraction. It has a rich history and culture, great food, great live music, a great rodeo and a lovely downtown, no wonder 34 million people flock to the city every year.

If you are thinking about visiting San Antonio and have qualms about the safety of the city, we got you covered. We deep dived into the statistics, crime reports and talked to the residents of the city to give you a better understanding of how safe the safe the city really is.

San Antonio Crime Stats

In 2020 San Antonio reported 128 homicides , which was a 22% increase from 2019, where 105 homicides were reported. Police attribute the increase in homicides partly to fatal family violence cases during the pandemic.

As of September 2021, there have been 94 homicides reported in San Antonio and if the current pace holds, the number of homicides will match or surpass the numbers in 2020.

Aggravated assaults and robbery also increased 6.87% and 6.99% respectively.

The most significant decrease was in the number of rapes reported, with a 28.5% decrease from 2019 numbers.

San Antonio police reported a total of 13,496 offenses in 2020, compared with 13,963 in 2019, which is a 3.3 percent year-over-year decrease.

It is when you start to travel outside of downtown is when you encounter problems. Avoid anywhere directly south, east or west of downtown. Those neighborhoods can get really sketchy, especially at night.

• I have lived in San Antonio for about 15 years and lived all over town. It’s not so much violent crime that concerns me, it is just wacko shit. Grifters, homeless and scammers.

• You probably won’t get murdered in San Antonio but you might wake up with your car on blocks.

• Avoid these streets, Zarzamora/Guadalupe, Zarzamora/Commerce, Frio/Martin, any courts, etc.
• I have visited Compton/Crenshaw/MidCity in LA and there’s nothing in San Antonio that remotely compares to that. SA is a walk in the park compared to that area.

• Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t get lost in your phone or your headphones.
• Walk with confidence and purpose. Don’t engage with the homeless.
• Don’t leave valuables in your car. San Antonio has a property crime issue and you can lessen your chance of being a victim, if you hide your valuables.

SAT Response to COVID-19

We know that our passengers have questions about how COVID-19 is impacting the airport and what SAT is doing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The safety and well-being of our passengers and employees is our number-one priority.

To ensure that passengers feel confident while traveling, SAT joined the Greater. SAfer. Together. pledge (in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance) aims to protect the health and safety of employees and customers and instill community confidence.

Facility Actions

What is SAT doing to protect passengers and employees?

• Frequent Cleaning and Disinfecting - Frequent cleaning practices continue in all public spaces and restrooms. and additional hand sanitizers were installed throughout the airport.
• Protective Shields  - Plastic Shields are installed in high-traffic areas, including ticket counters, retail shops and restaurants.
• Social Distancing  - Signage and floor markings throughout the terminal will give guidance on six-foot distancing in common areas.
• Xenex LightStrike Robot - SAT is the first airport in the world to purchase and deploy the Xenex LightStrike robot – the only ultraviolet (UV) room disinfection technology proven to deactivate SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

COVID-19 Testing

The San Antonio International Airport currently offers a no out-of-pocket cost, PCR testing clinic provided by Curative for the passengers and airport employees. It is located at Terminal B curbside - column marker B18 and open Monday - Sunday 8am - 6pm. Book an appointment at curative.com .

Social Distancing Efforts

Working with TSA, we have made some adjustments to the lines as you approach the security checkpoints to provide more space between lines of passengers. To provide additional space between the passengers in front of you and behind you, we ask everyone to practice social distancing and spread out rather than crowd other passengers nearby. Additionally, footprint markers have been placed on the floor near ticket counters, information booths and in other areas of queueing to indicate where people should stand.

Travel Restrictions

The airport remains open and flights are arriving and departing daily. However, airlines have drastically reduced their flight schedules, so we encourage passengers to check directly with their airline regarding flight status and face mask requirements.

Real ID Enforcement

The October 1, 2020, deadline for  REAL ID  has been delayed to October 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 Testing Requirements for International Passengers

All air passengers coming to the United States, including U.S. citizens, are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before they board a flight to the United States.

Travelers should expect to:

• Keep possession of their boarding passes.
• Separate food for X-ray screening.
• Pack smart (avoid prohibited items).
• Practice social distancing.
• All travelers must wear masks that cover both the mouth and nose.

When traveling, especially internationally, make sure you take the following steps to be proactive, prepared and protected when it comes to your health and the health of others.

Tips For Ensuring You Stay Healthy When You Travel

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of your used tissue.
• Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
• Wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds OR clean with alcohol-based hand cleaner.

Many of SAT’s retail shops and restaurants have made changes to their operations. Some have reduced their operating hours, some have closed temporarily, and others remain open with a focus on more takeout options to serve our passengers and employees who do not have anywhere else to purchase food. The airport has asked every retail outlet to maintain social distancing.

• Our Pups and Planes  therapy dog program has been suspended until further notice.
• Individually-packaged masks are available at no cost and being distributed by SAT Ambassadors upon request.

Currently, SAT’s garage parking , Long Term and Short Term, are open. The Long Term garage rate is $16 (4-24 hrs.)

If you are unable to return to SAT as planned due to COVID-19 and have questions about your vehicle that is currently parked in a SAT parking lot, call 210.207.3465 with the following information:

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit San Antonio is from November to April, when the weather is comfortable and the hotel rates are lower. Summer sees the largest influx of tourists from in- and out-of-state. Because of its historical significance to the state and its family-friendly theme parks, San Antonio attracts hordes of Texas families when the kids are on summer break. But the long Texan summer is close to unbearable (for most people) with humidity and temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit. What You Need to Know

An educated city San Antonio boasts several institutions of higher education – including Trinity University, San Antonio College and the University of Texas at San Antonio – that surround the downtown area.

A true taste of Texas Every April, Fiesta San Antonio takes over the entire city for 10 days to honor Texan heroes of the past and celebrate the city's diverse cultures.

For example, Bexar County (the county in which San Antonio sits and named for a former Mexican municipality) is pronounced "bear." Blanco Road, a major thoroughfare, is pronounced "blank-o."

Check the calendar Conventions lead to sold-out hotels across town, and these travelers likely booked months in advance. Check the city's tourism bureau website  and try to avoid convention-heavy weeks and weekends.

Eat around the corner Restaurants around the River Walk and other touristy areas will have higher prices than those only a few blocks away.

San Antonio contrasts the old and the new of Texas: the Alamo stands strong among contemporary skyscrapers and the banks of the San Antonio River are populated with the River Walk 's burgeoning businesses and restaurants. San Antonio residents are proud of their history, with many shops selling memorabilia engraved with the words "Remember the Alamo."

Additional cultures have influenced the customs of this city over time. Mexican culture heavily shaped San Antonio as it developed. Travel experts recommend stopping by Market Square (or El Mercado ) to find a variety of tasty Mexican foods, homemade goods and south of the border crafts. Mexican art is displayed everywhere you turn and Spanish is widely spoken. For a more festive taste of Tex-Mex culture, plan your trip during Fiesta in April or during the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in February.

What to Eat

San Antonio's cuisine has been shaped by many cultural influences, from Mexican to Native American to African American. True, barbecue and Tex-Mex are the most well-known foods, and you can find excellent smoked brisket, tacos and enchiladas nearly everywhere you turn. But Asian fusion, upscale European fare and Southern comfort food all make up the culinary fabric of the city, as well. Southtown, the River Walk, the Pearl and Alamo Heights are generally regarded as the go-to foodie neighborhoods. And you haven't been to San Antonio until you've tried a puffy taco – a crispy, fried, bubble-like tortilla stuffed with a savory filling

Oenophiles will be happy with a trip to San Antonio, too. The nearby Texas Hill Country is where many of the state's best wines are crafted. To sample some for yourself, plan a day trip to Fredericksburg (which sits about 70 miles north of San Antonio) and sign up for a wine tour of the city.

Compared to other U.S. cities of similar size, San Antonio is a safe place to visit. You may see more guns than you're used to thanks to lax firearm laws in Texas, but gun violence does not generally affect tourists. You should still use common sense, stick to well-lit areas after dark and keep a close eye on your valuables.

Those who are not used to the Texas heat should take precautions against heat stroke and dehydration, especially during the summer months. Heat stroke and dehydration symptoms commonly include headaches, nausea, dizziness and fatigue. Drink plenty of water, apply sunscreen regularly and if you are participating in more strenuous activities, such as hiking or biking, make sure to rest periodically.

Residents of Texas Hill Country share the land with numerous creepy-crawlies, including scorpions, rattlesnakes and water moccasins. While you most likely won't come face to face with these creatures within the city itself, those exploring the countryside may encounter them. Keep an eye out when walking around to avoid confrontation. If you're bitten or stung, seek medical attention immediately.

Getting Around San Antonio

The best way to get around San Antonio is by car, especially if you need to reach sites like Morgan's Wonderland  and Six Flags Fiesta Texas . Driving through the narrow downtown streets can be difficult, however, so plan to park your car in a lot or garage and explore some of the downtown area on foot. The bus system is also a handy and relatively inexpensive way to navigate the city center. Many travelers arrive through San Antonio International Airport (SAT), about 10 miles north of downtown, where you can find a plethora of rental car agencies. Several hotels also offer courtesy shuttles to and from the airport. City bus route No. 5 also services the airport and downtown areas. Taxis from the airport to downtown San Antonio cost between $24 and $29. Using taxis downtown is unnecessary, and you'll probably have to wait for one to arrive.

San Antonio International Airport

Inside the airport terminals, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided San Antonio International Airport, Customs and Border Protection, Emergency Medical Services providers and TSA with public health readiness measures. While following all CDC guidelines and recommendations, the Operations team is ensuring that the following actions are being executed:

• The CDC has provided guidance for local emergency medical service personnel responding to medical calls at the airport to help them assess and identify potentially infected travelers.
• Communicating early and often regarding all issues surrounding the virus and precautions that need to be taken.
• Custodial provider is placing an additional emphasis on public touchpoints in all areas, including handrails, bathroom stalls, seating, door handles, chairs and tables, touchscreen directories, concessions credit card machines, etc.
• Custodial employees are wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• CDC health alert signage is being placed throughout facilities, specifically at the entrances of security checkpoints and in all restrooms.

Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center

The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center’s number one priority is the health and safety of guests, employees, and partners. The Center has taken proactive measures in response to this rapidly evolving situation and continually monitor information from various resources. The Center is ready to work with meeting planners to develop plans and procedures specific to each event. Current guidelines encompass information from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Texas Governor’s Office, City of San Antonio Health Department, and International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM).

The Convention Center is proud to have received the Global BioRisk Advisory Council (GBAC) Accreditation. GBAC is a division of International Supply and Sanitary Association (ISSA), the worldwide cleaning association. This accreditation program assesses cleaning and disinfection practices and infectious-disease prevention. GBAC is currently the industry’s only accreditation for outbreak prevention, response and recovery establishing requirements to control risks associated with infectious agents, such as the virus that causes COVID-19.

• Sanitation methods have increased for high contact areas including guest information desks, escalator and stair handrails, elevators, water fountains, public furniture, door handles, push bars and restroom surfaces
• Free-standing hand sanitizer units are available for strategic placement
• Signage is prominently displayed in facilities with CDC protocols for hand washing
• Custodial managers and supervisors were trained by the International Sanitary and Supply Association (ISSA) on improved cleaning procedures. As a result, a comprehensive training program was administered to custodial staff
• Hand hygiene processes and respiratory etiquette were reintroduced to staff
• Ventilation standards were adjusted for increased outside air intake/air change rates
• Screening measures are employed for all partners, staff, vendors, and contractors utilizing City of San Antonio guidelines
• Will ensure successful meetings by working with each meeting planner on social distancing and space allocation
• The Center’s exclusive caterer is revising many processes to ensure guests continue to receive the highest food safety and quality of food and beverages. Food presentation options may include one-sided buffet lines served by catering wait staff, silverware individually wrapped, condiments provided by a server upon request, and a new variety of boxed meals and prepackaged food items.

The San Antonio Riverwalk is very safe. The Riverwalk is a bustling tourist attraction that is frequently patrolled by the San Antonio Police Department, which keeps a watchful eye on the crowds. An ingenious series of dams and tunnels prevent the river from flooding. So you’ll be safe on the Riverwalk.

Also known as the Paseo Del Rio, the Riverwalk is one of the largest environmental attractions in the United States.

To get to the Riverwalk, simply head downtown and find one of the  parking areas . Much of the Riverwalk is ADA-accessible, so visitors who have wheelchairs or other equipment can enjoy the splendor of the river too.

One of the best ways to enjoy the Riverwalk is to  take a river cruise . If you’re a curious person who wants to know about the history of this area, take a narrated river cruise, where your captain will tell you all about San Antonio’s colorful past. If you just want to get from point A to B, many water taxis and ferries go from point to point along the Riverwalk.

The Riverwalk is a fun destination any time, but it hosts many major celebrations throughout the year.  For example, there is an  Armed Forces River Parade  every July to celebrate our veterans, plus holiday celebrations, a Margarita Madness food tour, and artisan shows. The Riverwalk has something for everyone.

Safety on the Riverwalk

But you might be wondering, is the Riverwalk safe? Unfortunately, major tourist attractions often attract nefarious characters like pickpockets, thieves, and muggers. So, how worried about your safety should you be on the Riverwalk?

San Antonio does have a  relatively high crime rate .  So while there are some thefts along the Riverwalk, your risk is not much greater than at any other major urban attraction . However, like with any statistical data, a deeper dive will help you decide your actual risk.

If you crave more details, the San Antonio Police Department has a  LexisNexis map  that allows you to filter crime data by location, crime type, date, and so on, so you can explore crime data in real-time to familiarize yourself with the area.

The San Antonio Police Department also posts its  Uniform Crime Reports  on a free, public web page. Violent crimes, such as robbery, assault, rape, and murder, are fairly uncommon in San Antonio.

According to the numbers, most of San Antonio’s crimes are small-scale petty thefts. These crimes are easy enough to avoid if you take some common-sense safety measures. Lock your car doors, keep valuables out of sight, and be aware of your surroundings. Don’t leave your purse, phone, wallet, or keys unattended in a bar or restaurant. Basic self-awareness will help prevent many crimes.

Police Presence in San Antonio

San Antonio is a well-policed city.  The  San Antonio Police Department  has beat cops working on foot patrol and road patrol, plus bicycle units and special divisions that patrol locations like the Riverwalk.

The SAPD engages in traditional policing, but also engages in community outreach and community-based policing in an effort to cultivate a good relationship between the police and the community they serve.

Personal Safety in San Antonio

If you happen to become sick or suffer an injury while visiting San Antonio, be assured that there are many fine hospitals in the city. The closest emergency rooms to downtown are the  Baptist Medical Center Emergency Room  and the  Methodist Hospital Metropolitan Emergency Room .  

While the Riverwalk is very safe, you should be aware that many sections of the Riverwalk do not have railings preventing you from falling in.  About 500 people a year end up falling into the river, but you can easily avoid falling in by using your common sense. Stay away from the river’s edge, don’t horse around on the embankments, and don’t try to reach into the river, and you should be okay.

The Riverwalk is frequently patrolled by the San Antonio Police Department and by the San Antonio Park Police, who have an entire unit dedicated to the Riverwalk.  As a result, the Riverwalk is a safe attraction.

That said, crime can happen even in the safest areas. The best way to avoid being a victim of crime is to take sensible precautions. Here are some tips to keep you safe on the Riverwalk:

• Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t be staring at your phone or needlessly distracted.
• If visiting a local bar or restaurant, don’t leave your drink unattended.
• Don’t flash expensive possessions or large amounts of cash.
• Don’t leave valuable items unattended.
• Travel with a companion. Groups are more difficult to victimize.
• Carry yourself with confidence .
• Listen to your gut. If a person or situation makes you feel uncomfortable, head for a populated and brightly lit place.

Does the San Antonio Riverwalk Flood?

The San Antonio River has occasionally flooded in the past. Like any other river, a massive inundation of rainwater could easily make the San Antonio River slip her banks and flood the city. Today, however, the river is protected by an ingenious flood-protection system.

When the Riverwalk was designed in 1929, engineer Robert Hughman realized that flooding would deter tourists from visiting the area. As such, he incorporated  41 separate dams along the river  that help maintain a stable water level. In addition, the dams divert excess water into a series of tunnels that lead away from downtown, helping to prevent flooding.

Does the system work? Yes! As recently as 2017, significant flood events that affected the San Antonio River did not cause flooding in any part of the Riverwalk or downtown San Antonio.  So you are safe from floods on the Riverwalk.  

Is the San Antonio River Natural or Man-made?

The San Antonio River is a natural river.  Originating from underground springs in San Antonio, the river naturally flows southwest, where it feeds into the Guadalupe River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico.  Parts of the river have been dammed or diverted, but the actual river itself is naturally occurring and not man-made.

The San Antonio River has been an important site for human activity for hundreds and hundreds of years. Before Texas was Texas, the river was used by indigenous people, Spanish settlers, and Mexican nationals. Most famously, the San Antonio River runs very close to the Alamo, the famous fort that was home to  a fierce battle  during Texas’ war for independence.

Can You Walk to the Alamo from the Riverwalk?

The Alamo is easily accessible from the San Antonio Riverwalk.  This historical destination is located about 5 minutes away from the downtown reach of the San Antonio Riverwalk. Exit the Riverwalk on East Commerce Street and head west, then take a right on Alamo Plaza. The famous fort will be just under a quarter-mile up Alamo Plaza.

Within walking distance of the Alamo, visitors will also find many fabulous tourist attractions, including the Shops at Rivercenter shopping mall, a Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, and a movie theater.

When is the Best Time to Visit San Antonio? 

The  best time of year to visit San Antonio  is during the off-season, between November and April. Visiting during the off-season lets you enjoy better weather, smaller crowds, and lower hotel prices. Plus, if you go during November or January, you can enjoy the scenic  Holiday Lights  that adorn the Riverwalk!

Many people go to San Antonio during the summer months, but we wouldn’t recommend it. Summer break tends to bring huge crowds, and it also brings Texas-style heat. So prepare for temperatures north of 100 degrees and humidity to match during the heat of the summer.

The springtime brings blooming flowers and is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities. Fall offers comfortable temperatures and lower tourist crowds, allowing for a more relaxed experience.

My favorite time to visit is early winter, during the holidays, when the River Walk is adorned with Christmas lights. It is truly a sight to see! However, San Antonio gets very busy during this time as well.

How Many Days In San Antonio Is Enough?

Deciding how many days in San Antonio is enough depends on what you want to do. While I highly recommend doing everything I mentioned in my things to do list above, I know that list is extensive and cannot be completed in a day.

However, you can do a lot on a weekend, so I recommend spending 2-3 days in San Antonio. This will allow you to see all the most famous landmarks, eat some delicious Tex-Mex food, and give you the urge to come back and see more of what San Antonio has to offer!

San Antonio Weather

San Antonio experiences hot and humid summers, especially from June to August, with temperatures often exceeding 90°F (32°C). If you don’t mind the heat and want to take advantage of water activities or indoor attractions, summer can still be an enjoyable time to visit.

Winter (December to February) in San Antonio is relatively mild, with temperatures ranging from the 40s°F (4-9°C) to the 60s°F (15-20°C). It can occasionally get chilly, but it’s generally a pleasant season for exploring outdoor attractions without the crowds.

In a big city like San Antonio, there are plenty of places to stay. You will find many options based on what area you want to stay in and your budget.

How To Get Around Antonio

San Antonio is a large city with its landmarks and attractions spread out around town. 

If you are staying downtown, the best way to get around is by foot. There are so many attractions and things to do downtown that you don’t need to leave the area to have fun!

Uber is also readily available, however, on weekends, holidays, or when big events are in town, Uber’s tend to take longer to get and prices skyrocket! Be ready to pay up or wait for the surge to go down.

In my opinion, the best way to see San Antonio is by car . This will give you the freedom to venture out and do as much as you want whenever you want!

Despite what’s portrayed in TV shows and movies, San Antonio is a relatively safe place to live. In fact, it ranks eighth in the list of safest major cities in the US out of 32.

For the most part, visitors and locals are under the protection of the city’s vigilant and friendly police force. However, this city isn’t perfect; it still experiences hundreds of daily crimes. This article discusses everything you need to know about staying safe in San Antonio, including important statistics to consider before visiting or moving to the city.

The San Antonio police reported 10,874 violent crime offenses in 2021, which is about 3% less violent crimes in 2020 at 11,252.

Property crime has significantly increased, however; 60,745 in 2021 as opposed to 54,826 in 2020.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 99,218 registered sex offenders are in Texas.

Of this, about 3,750 sex offenders live in this city. That’s a ratio of 1 offender per 400 or so residents. Most offenders live in suburban areas like Live Oak and Leon Valley.

What Are the Safest Neighborhoods in San Antonio?

The closer you live to central San Antonio, the higher the crime rate. If you’re planning to visit or move to this city, these neighborhoods are considered the safest:

Helotes is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in San Antonio, not only because of its beautiful homes and friendly community but also because of its low violent crime rate.

Compared to the San Antonio average of 28.6, Helotes has a violent crime rate of only 9.5.

The property crime rate in the area is 28.8, as opposed to the San Antonio average of 52.8.

With a population of just over 10,500 people, Fair Oaks Ranch is home to high-end luxury homes, quality shopping and dining, and many golf courses.

With a violent crime rate of 7.9 and a property crime rate of 11.7, it ranks high in Texas’s ten safest places to live.  

With a population of about 5,000 people, Bulverde offers a quiet, rural feel to most of its residents. It’s a beautifully developed area and provides top-tier schooling, homes, shopping, and eating places to fulfill your needs.

This small city has a violent crime rate and property crime rate of 10.3 and 28.5 respectively.

What Are the Most Dangerous Neighborhoods in San Antonio?

San Antonio is considered a safe travel destination in the US, but some neighborhoods are more dangerous than others. Luckily, there are not a lot of “deadly” neighborhoods in this city. Two, in particular, stand out from the rest:

Located on the right side of southeast Texas, Pecan Valley is a lower-middle-income neighborhood with a population of 12,600. It’s a generally nice place, with mid-century modern-style homes and good amenities.

Unfortunately, the small city of Pecan Valley is no stranger to shootings, gang dealings, drug trafficking, and violent crimes. A report delivered by San Antonio police states that the violent crimes in Pecan Valley at the end of 2019 were 555% greater than the national average.

The property crime rate and violent crime rate of East Terrel Hill are 465% and 671% greater than the national average, respectively. This makes it one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in San Antonio and the whole of Texas.

The chance of being a property or violent crime victim is 1 in 30.

San Antonio FAQs

Though San Antonio is the eighth safest major city in the US, it falls near the bottom of the list of the safest cities in Texas. This doesn’t necessarily mean that this city isn’t a safe place to retire since some neighborhoods are safer than others, but it isn’t a good first choice for retirees looking for a peaceful, crime-free life. The safest city in Texas to retire is Fulshear, with a violent crime rate of 0 per 1000 people.

According to Neighborhood Scout, a nationwide database for crime data, the chances of becoming a victim of either property or violent crime is 1 in 124, a bit less than in other major cities.

Your safety is very important if you are going to be visiting a new place for the first time. If you are planning a visit to San Antonio, you should know what to look out for so that your trip will be a safe and enjoyable adventure.

Anywhere you go there is bound to be traffic once in a while and San Antonio is no exception. There are times, however, where traffic is worse than others. If you can avoid driving at these times, you can avoid an accident or being stuck at a standstill for hours. If you are visiting San Antonio during Spring Break, you can expect to be in traffic for hours. The same is true if the Spurs are playing that night. You should avoid the stadium at all costs. You should also plan your trips before or after rush hour.

Beware of uninsured motorists if you are driving in the city. According to the San Antonio Police Department, the number of uninsured drivers on the roads has risen to 90 percent over the last year. It is not known whether the city can’t or won’t enforce the law, but uninsured drivers are everywhere and they aren’t often punished.

The Riverwalk

The Riverwalk in San Antonio is a major attraction, however, you should be careful if you decide to go. Since there are no railings except for in front of the restaurants, you should stay away from the edge. Each year, over 500 people fall in the river. You should also avoid this area after dark because it is a very common place for muggings. If you must be down there after dark, you should stay in highly populated areas and don’t go alone.

There are certain neighborhoods in San Antonio where the crime rate is the highest and you should avoid them if at all possible The neighborhoods with the highest crime rates are Westwood Village, the Southeast side, Palm Heights, Thompson Community, and Government Hill.

As an avid traveler and tourist, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting many wonderful destinations around the world. However, not every part of a city is created equal. While San Antonio, TX has so much rich culture and beauty to offer visitors, there are a few areas that are best avoided, especially for those unfamiliar with the city. After my trips to San Antonio , I’ve learned that knowing the areas to avoid can make your visit safer, more enjoyable, and stress-free.

When planning my trips to San Antonio, I always make it a point to research ahead of time and learn about the areas I should avoid, primarily for safety reasons. As a solo female traveler, I take extra precautions to steer clear of high-crime areas. Through my research and past experiences, I’ve discovered that there are certain neighborhoods in San Antonio that tourists may want to avoid, or at least be extra cautious in.

In this article, I will share areas to avoid in San Antonio based on my own experiences and recommendations from locals. My goal is to ensure that anyone visiting this wonderful city for the first time has a safe, memorable trip. By knowing which areas to avoid, you can better plan your visit to fully experience all that San Antonio has to offer.

1. Wheatley Heights

With barred windows and graffiti lining the litter-strewn streets, Wheatley Heights gave me an uneasy feeling even during the daytime when I drove through briefly. According to locals, this Eastside neighborhood is best avoided due to prevalent issues like gang violence, drug trafficking, and assault. As an unfamiliar visitor, I did not feel safe walking around Wheatley Heights even briefly, as the sense of danger was palpable. Boarded-up businesses and homes added to the bleak, almost abandoned atmosphere. Based on the advice of San Antonio residents, Wheatley Heights should definitely be avoided for safety reasons.

2. Villa de San Antonio (San Antonio Villa)

Driving through the Villa de San Antonio neighborhood, I was struck by the extreme neglect and blight. Boarded-up windows and overgrown vacant lots filled the landscape. Groups loitering on the streets and in front of businesses made me keep moving cautiously in my rental car. Speaking to residents afterward confirmed my impressions – this southside community has a reputation for high crime rates spanning from gang violence to home burglaries. The sense of danger was evident in the deteriorating homes and lack of maintenance. Considering the risks involved, visitors unfamiliar with San Antonio should avoid the Villa de San Antonio, especially after dark.

3. Eastwood Village

Situated near the AT&T Center east of downtown, Eastwood Village at first appeared scenic and lush. However, upon closer inspection, heavy burglar bars on windows and copious graffiti revealed the neighborhood’s reputation for elevated rates of theft, burglary, and gang violence according to locals. Trash cluttered vacant lots and the streets, while vacancy signs hung in many shop windows. As an unfamiliar visitor, I did not feel safe lingering long in Eastwood Village to take in the sights. Based on local crime reports, Eastwood Village is one of the areas tourists may want to avoid for safety precautions when visiting San Antonio.

4. Denver Heights

Driving cautiously through the Denver Heights neighborhood, I was taken aback by the prominent graffiti and vandalism marring buildings and homes. Many structures had burglar bars installed, evoking a sense of danger. Locals I spoke with later confirmed Denver Heights south of AT&T Center suffers from rising crime rates spanning drugs, gang violence, prostitution, and beyond. The unease and neglect were evident in the landscape. While no neighborhood is completely off-limits, Denver Heights poses significant safety concerns for visitors unfamiliar with San Antonio. Knowing the risks involved can help tourists take proper precautions.

5. East Terrell Hills

At first glimpse, the East Terrell Hills area appeared abandoned and neglected – never good signs. Boarded-up buildings covered in graffiti showcased the blight. As I viewed the territorial markings, I sensed danger, even during the daytime. Residents I connected with verified the area is known for elevated crime rates ranging from drug dealing to assault. Being unfamiliar with San Antonio, I avoided lingering in East Terrell Hills due to safety concerns and risks even for seasoned locals. Tourism should be about enjoying new places, not worrying about becoming a victim.

6. Nevada Street

Needing to cross town, I cautiously navigated Nevada Street northwest of downtown San Antonio. Right away, the vacant and barred buildings caught my eye, as did vagrants loitering on litter-strewn sidewalks. Multiple people approached my rental car asking for money at stoplights. Locals later confirmed certain sections of Nevada Street have higher rates of theft, burglary, drug use, and sales. As a visitor, I avoided unnecessary side trips down Nevada Street due to risks reported by residents. Knowing this helped me prevent problems while still enjoying San Antonio’s offerings.

7. Mission San Jose

Touring the historic Spanish Missions, I found Mission San Jose’s grounds lovely and serene. However, just beyond the walls, the neighborhood elicited unease. Bars on windows of the adjacent homes hinted at dangers, as did clusters of people loitering on corners. According to later reports, the neighborhood surrounding Mission San Jose has issues with gang violence, drug trafficking, robbery, and vandalism – in stark contrast to the mission itself. Though the mission is a popular tourist spot, visitors may want to exercise caution and avoid the surrounding neighborhood, sticking to the secure grounds during the tour. Awareness helps prevent mishaps.

8. Thompson Community

Driving through Thompson Community, just northeast of downtown San Antonio, revealed potential risks even during daylight. Many homes had heavy burglar bars installed, while “no trespassing” signs lined the streets. Groups loitering outside vacant buildings added to the unsettling atmosphere. Conversing with nearby residents later confirmed my impressions – Thompson Community reportedly suffers from elevated rates of drug trafficking, gang violence, robbery, and beyond. 9. Cable-Westwood

Initially, I appreciated Cable-Westwood’s convenience and central location west of downtown San Antonio. Walking around, however, revealed details that changed my tune – barred windows, heavy loitering, and a sense of blight. Though some homes appeared well-kept, others were clearly abandoned with overgrown lots. According to locals I consulted, Cable-Westwood suffers from occasional gang violence, drug dealing, burglary, and theft. As much as I wanted to enjoy the neighborhood’s offerings, as a tourist unfamiliar with the risks involved, I felt it safest to avoid Cable-Westwood during my stay. Asking locals for insight can help visitors avoid pitfalls.

10. Pecan Valley

Driving through sections of the large Pecan Valley neighborhood southeast of downtown San Antonio revealed discrepancies. While some blocks appeared cleaner and well-maintained, others had heavy graffiti and loitering that made me uneasy even during daylight. Several complexes had barred windows and security signs posted. Researching later showed that while Pecan Valley overall has positive areas, certain sections are plagued by drugs, gang violence, burglary, and beyond. As an unfamiliar visitor, I made sure to avoid those high-crime pockets to ensure a safe, enjoyable trip. Doing homework on neighborhoods can guide tourists’ steps.

11. Arena District

Given its name from the AT&T Center sports venue, San Antonio’s Arena District seemed like it would be safe and bustling. However, walking the neighborhood’s fringes revealed potential threats. People loitering, drinking publicly, and asking for money caused unease. According to locals, the district has issues with theft, public intoxication, drugs, and occasional violence during major crowded events. As a visitor, I only felt safe directly around the AT&T Center itself and avoided the rest of the neighborhood during my stay. 12. Rainbow Hills

Cruising cautiously through the Rainbow Hills community west of downtown San Antonio revealed potential risks through the landscape alone. Neglected vacant properties and boarded-up homes dominated the area. Graffiti and trash littered the barren streets. Even during the day, I felt uneasy and did not linger long. Research later showed this neighborhood suffers rising crime issues including drugs, gang activity, burglary, and beyond. As an unfamiliar visitor, I felt Rainbow Hills posed too many risks to merit exploring, relying on locals’ insights to stay safe. Being informed helps travelers avoid dangerous missteps.

13. Jefferson Heights

Similar to its neighboring Rainbow Hills, San Antonio’s Jefferson Heights also elicited unease when I briefly drove through sections during daylight. Homes with heavy burglar bars and “no trespassing” signs lined trash-strewn streets. Graffiti and loitering seemed prevalent. I saw no reason to linger. Confirming with residents later revealed Jefferson Heights does suffer higher rates of gang violence, drugs, robbery, and associated dangers. As a visitor unfamiliar with the area, I felt avoiding Jefferson Heights altogether was the safest course unless I had a specific reason to travel there. Through my own experiences and advice from locals, I put together this list of neighborhoods that are best avoided in San Antonio, particularly for those unfamiliar with the city.

The Pearl district is also worth a look, especially with the neighbourhood’s ongoing transformation from an industrial area into a creative and culinary hub. The city even has its own team of roving diplomats called the Centro Ambassadors who patrol the downtown streets on the lookout for anyone needing help. The dish was created by the Lopez brothers who ran Ray's Drive In, which is still around today. Another Lopez brother branched out to open Henry’s Puffy Tacos, another popular puffy taco spot among many around San Antonio. Puffy tacos are so well-loved here that the mascot for a minor-league baseball team – the San Antonio Missions – is a puffy taco who dances and cheers with glee.

If you’re thinking of traveling to Texas for vacation, you’ve picked a great spot.

Located in the southern part of the United States, it is full of good food, friendly people, and fantastic weather (The summers can get a little toasty, which makes for a great reason to tube the Comal or take a trip to Galveston Beach!).

It is the birthplace of Dr. Pepper, home to the Alamo, and has the largest state capital building in the United States!

• Warnings & Dangers in Texas

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

The overall risk we have given travelers in Texas is medium. This is largely due to the crime rate in the larger cities such as Houston and Dallas, but keep in mind that there are plenty of places you can visit that have safe locations if you're feeling uncomfortable.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

There is no documented risk for taxi services in Texas. However, if you are using a ride share service, you should always confirm the license plate number as well as the make and model of the vehicle before getting inside of it.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: LOW

Since the crime rate in Texas is relatively low, we have also given your chance of being pickpocketed a low-risk rating. If you are in an area of Texas that has a higher crime rate (i.e. certain areas in Houston, Dallas, and El Paso), you should protect yourself by carrying your backpack across your chest, your wallet in your front pocket, and keeping your purse zipped up.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: MEDIUM

We have given Texas a medium rating on natural disaster risk, as it has a tornado and hurricane season. Tornado season is from April to June and hurricane season is from June to November.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The statistic in Texas for being a victim of a mugging is 91.4 per 100,000 people, which places Texas in the top 10 states where mugging occurs most frequently. For this reason, we have given the mugging risk a medium rating.

TERRORISM RISK: LOW

The terrorism risk in Texas is low, as most crimes are under the category of robbery or other types of violent crimes. That being said, there are ports in Texas that could pose a risk potential. However, there are no documented occurrences of this happening at the time of this writing.

SCAMS RISK: LOW

Your risk of being scammed in Texas is low, however, you should always be vigilant and use common sense while traveling. If you have any concerns, you can always contact the police department in the city that you are in.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

We have given the grade for women travelers risk to Texas as low, based on the calculation of rape statistics in the state. The rape statistic in Texas works out to approximately .04% versus the national average of .03% of people. Both women and men are always advised to be cautious in their travels, but overall, it is relatively safe for female travelers.

TAP WATER RISK: LOW

The tap water risk in Texas is low, as this is still a US state (which has mandates and codes to ensure proper drinking water). However, if you're going to cross over the border (walk or drive) into Mexico, you will want to consume bottled water only until you are back in Texas.

• Safest Places to Visit in Texas

Texas has plenty of safe areas to visit and have a great time.

If you’re a history buff, the Alamo is going to be perfect for you.

Not only is the area that it is located in very safe, but it also has a profound place in Texas history.

Another safe area with enjoyable activities is New Braunfels, where you can tube the Guadalupe River and the Comal for miles.

If the ocean is more your scene, Galveston is rich in Texas history and has plenty of restaurants, shopping, and swimming to take part in.

Certain areas of Dallas can be dangerous, but if you avoid those parts, there is a lot to see and do out there.

Restaurants, bars, and clubs are prominent in these areas and can be very enjoyable to let loose in.

• Places to Avoid in Texas

The 7th most dangerous city in Texas is Houston, and it is a highly visited area.

It is also the 4th most heavily populated city in the United States, which can create an opportunity for crime.

Other dangerous cities in Texas include Bellmead, Humble, Lubbock, Bastrop, Palmview, Livingston, Alamo, Amarillo, and Beaumont.

Most of these cities do not see a heavy tourist flow (aside from Houston), but if you’re going to any of them, you should ensure that you are aware of your surroundings.

Always report any crimes or suspicious activity and concerns to the local law enforcement in these areas.

• Safety Tips for Traveling to Texas
• Don’t travel alone. This should be a given, but traveling alone can be dangerous. Whenever you’re traveling, make sure you have a buddy system and that you know where each other are at all times.
• Protect yourself from pickpocketers. Even though the risk of being pickpocketed in Texas is low, anything is possible. Carry your wallet in your front pocket, keep your purse zipped up, and carry your backpack across your chest if you’re in an area with a high crime rate.
• Avoid high-risk areas. For the most part, the areas with high crime rates in Texas aren’t frequented by tourists too often. However, it’s still important to avoid cities in Texas with high crime rates (or stay in safer neighborhoods) to avoid becoming a victim of any crime.
• Keep your phone charged. Your phone won’t be good for much during an emergency if it isn’t fully charged. Make sure you have it charged before leaving for the day, and keep a battery pack in your bag in case it dies before you get back to your hotel.
• Rideshare safety. Lyft and Uber are very popular in more heavily populated cities, so you should always use proper rideshare safety. Check the license plate to make sure it matches the license plate number on your app as well as the make and model of the car you are getting into.
• Carry mace. Mace can be very handy in situations where you need to defend yourself and make a getaway. If you are flying into Texas, you cannot carry this on the plane, but it can be checked. Note: You cannot fly with more than 4 ounces of mace and it cannot be over 2% in strength. It also must be equipped with a safety feature that does not allow accidental discharge. The TSA recommends you check with your airline to ensure they do not have a policy against mace being checked in your luggage.
• Use a location app. Whether you are using an iPhone or a different app for location, you should always keep one running on your phone and ensure that your travel partner or a trusted friend or family member has access to the location.
• Avoid carrying excess cash and cards. If possible, you want to avoid carrying any excess cash and cards. If a robbery occurs, you want to be able to have a backup at your hotel room to finish your trip and make it home without any extra headache.
• Keep emergency information on hand. These can be local numbers for your country’s embassy or police or ambulance information, but you must have access to it in the event of an emergency.
• Make sure your bank knows you’re traveling. All banks have a fraud department that makes note of any suspicious activity occurring on your bank account. Purchases out of state or out of your country are a red flag for banks, and they may freeze your debit card or credit card if there is a concern. You can avoid this by letting your bank know where you are traveling and how long you expect to be there.
• So... How Safe Is Texas Really?

Overall, Texas is a safe state to visit in the United States if you know where to go and avoid the places that do tend to see higher rates of crime.

While some cities do rank high in crime rates, there are plenty of places across this expansive state where you can visit to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable vacation.

If you want to stick to safer areas that have more family fun activities, try to stay near Galveston, Austin, San Antonio, or New Braunfels and avoid cities in the list above that rank highest in crime in Texas.

These are all safe areas that have plenty of activities to enjoy while you are visiting this beautiful and friendly state!

• How Does Texas Compare?
• Useful Information

If you don't live in the United States, you may need a visa or passport to gain entry. A non-petitioned base visa is 160.00 USD, and these are used for travelers who do not need an employer to petition for them to come and are generally reserved for tourists or those who do not seek to stay in the United States for a longer period (or permanently) and are not planning to work. To obtain this, you will need to fill out a form DS-160 which can be found online here.

The currency used in Texas is the United States Dollar (USD). Airports in Houston, Austin, and Dallas have currency exchanges, as do malls in major cities. If you are a banking customer of major banks such as Wells Fargo, you can also exchange your currency here.

The weather in Texas can get very warm in the summer, with temperatures reaching into the upper 90s and 100s. If you are traveling in the late spring to late summer, you will want to pack light clothes and a light jacket in case it gets cool in the evening. In the fall and winter, it can get cool and humid, so you should pack long sleeves, jeans, and a jacket. Keep in mind that Texas is a very large state, with a lot of different climates, so make sure you check up on the exact area you are traveling before you pack.

The major airports in Texas are Houston Hobby (located in Houston, Texas), Dallas-Fort Worth Airport (located in Dallas, Texas), and Austin Bergstrom International Airport (located in Austin, Texas). All of these are located within an hour's drive of the major city they are connected to, making it easy to start enjoying your travels as soon as you land!

Friendly place with many things to do and see.

Texas is a great place to visit with so many activities and interesting sights that you’ll need months to see them all. It’s also a pretty friendly place and has less pickpockets than I would have expected (from what I read before arriving here). I’m glad my whole trip was a success and I will be returning as soon as I can.

Texas is not just a republican state, it’s the REPUBLICAN state. any other opinion here and people won’t really like to hear it.

7 Reasons to Visit San Antonio Now

If your memories of San Antonio   are limited to a stop at the Alamo and a meal on the River Walk accented by colorful umbrellas and mariachi music, it’s time to visit again.

Texas’s second largest city is in the midst of   a cultural revival, with the up-and-coming   Pearl district   leading the charge. With a burgeoning restaurant scene, historic restorations, and a raft of new construction, San Antonio   is reinventing itself, becoming a multifaceted metropolis well worth exploring.

Here are seven reasons you should visit now:

1. the river walk expansion.

San Antonio’s Paseo del Río remains its biggest draw. And though the below-street-level promenade continues to teem with tourists, major expansion efforts have thinned out the   crowds and lured locals back downtown.

The   eight-mile Mission Reach extension, completed in 2013, connects four of the city’s five 18th-century frontier missions   (excluding the Alamo) with walking and biking trails and restores the San Antonio River to its natural state.

When combined with the previously completed   Museum Reach   segment, which   connects the San Antonio Museum of Art to the Pearl neighborhood, the River Walk now encompasses   a total of 15 miles—making the city’s   cultural and historical offerings more accessible than ever.

2. UNESCO Recognition

In 2015, San Antonio’s five Spanish colonial missions , as a group, were   designated a World Heritage site, joining the   Statue of Liberty ,   Independence Hall ,   and just seven   other cultural properties   in the United States on   UNESCO’s list.

Mostly thanks to high school textbooks, everyone remembers   the Alamo, the northernmost Spanish colonial fortress in the city. But   I found Mission San José ,   known as “Queen of the Missions” due to   its size—and one of the four missions composing   the   San Antonio Missions National Historical Park   (the Alamo, whose actual name is Mission San Antonio de Valero, is managed independently)—most worthy of exploration. Tip:   Look for the “Rose Window” in   the church sacristy and hand-carved religious statuary dating back to colonial times.

Whether you visit one or all five of San Antonio’s well-preserved Franciscan missions—which were founded to   transform   Native Americans   into Catholic, tax-paying subjects of the king of Spain—there’s no excuse to skip out on the history lesson: Admission to each of the sites is free.

3. Miró at the McNay

The   McNay Art Museum   is the   first modern art museum founded in the state of Texas, the result of a 1950 bequest by local painter and oil heiress Marion Koogler McNay, who donated an impressive array of Postimpressionist acquisitions along with her   24-room Spanish Colonial Revival estate in which to house them.

The   relaxing oasis located in San Antonio’s quiet Alamo Heights neighborhood (about five miles north of downtown) has expanded its holdings to become a preeminent destination for aesthetes from both near and far. In addition to its eclectic permanent collection—which includes   works by Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keeffe, Henri Matisse, and Edward Hopper—on exhibit now through early 2016 is the must-see “ Miró: The Experience of Seeing .”   Barcelona-born Joan Miró (1893-1983) was an admirer turned friend of Picasso’s (both spoke Catalan), and his intensely colorful, graphic works are a fascinating feast for the eyes.

Part of the charm of visiting the museum lies in exploring McNay’s former residence and tracing   its   mansion-to-museum transformation. The 23-acre grounds, which include extensive gardens and outdoor statuary are also a joy. I spent an hour reading a book in what might be the loveliest spot in San Antonio—the koi pond in the museum’s stately courtyard.

4. Culinary Explosion

A decade ago, San Antonio seemed to be all Mexican food, all the time. But from the looks of it, the city has been branching out.

Head to the   Southtown neighborhood for the buzziest new restaurants in San Antonio, from exuberant Asian-fusion hot spot   Hot Joy   to globally inspired small-plate eatery   Feast .

To the north of downtown, near the San Antonio Museum of Art ,   you’ll find two places I love: coffee and wine bar   Rosella —which also serves up tasty pastries, sandwiches, and snacks—and   Andrew Weissman ‘s all-outdoor   The Luxury .   Tip: Try your hand at bocce ball under the twinkly lights at the latter.

Even farther north, pioneering homegrown chef   Jason Dady   has opened   two new restaurants, Tuscan-inspired Tre Enoteca and casual seafood joint Shuck Shack .

5. Blue Star   Bliss

Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum

  may lie at   the heart of the mixed-use Blue Star Arts Complex, but the Southtown compound’s cutting-edge cred is bolstered by a number of galleries and artist’s studios with signs welcoming visitors to pop in and say hello.

Once you’ve gotten your fill of art, stop by newly open   Blue Star Provisions , a small grocery store offering a delicious selection of kolache .   These yeasty pastries stuffed with sweet and savory ingredients originated in the Czech Republic and were popularized in Central Texas by Czech Moravian immigrants who settled in the region.

After that, if you have time and energy to spare, venture   across the river to admire the grand houses of San Antonio’s King William Historic District , a neighborhood settled by German immigrants in the 1860s.

6. Top-Notch   Performance Space

The gleaming Tobin Center for the Performing Arts   opened last year on the River Walk and has been driving revitalization efforts downtown.

The sleek space is grounded by its setting in the city’s historic Municipal Auditorium. But don’t let the preserved exterior fool you; the inside has been transformed into a high-tech, acoustically perfect, 1,738-seat main hall that hosts performers and performances as varied as Texas troubadour   Robert Earl Keen ,   comedian   Janeane Garofalo , and The Nutcracker .  

7. Rooftop With a View

Paramour ,   an   8,000-square-foot space that sits atop the Phipps building in downtown San Antonio, is the new local favorite for a night out.

The party starts early and goes late at this self-described “ boozy oasis in the sky ,” but the best time to visit is at sunset to take in the Museum Reach section of the River Walk and the rest of the city   skyline. Tip: Take it from me, you won’t want to miss the ostentatious bathroom.

8 Reasons Why San Antonio is a Safe Place for Family Vacations

It doesn’t matter if you are a parent, grandparent, or just someone who wants to travel with your family, San Antonio can be a great place for all of these. San Antonio is one of the safest cities in Texas and has many attractions for all ages. The Alamo city is also home to some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. Here are eight reasons why San Antonio should be on your list for your next family vacation destination!

 1. There is so much to do! San Antonio has been rated the number one family vacation city in Texas and there are many attractions for all ages. You can visit SeaWorld, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, or take a tour of the Alamo with your children. After walking around downtown San Antonio you can head over to SplashTown for some water fun before heading back home where it’s warm out even on cold winter days like today!

2. It has lots of restaurants that accommodate kids. If you want something other than pizza at dinner time then we have plenty of great options that will please everyone’s palate from chains such as TGI Fridays and Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen to local favorites like Cibolo’s Italian Restaurant or Café Ole.

3. The San Antonio Zoo is a great destination for families that will keep children of all ages entertained and they are one of the only zoos in North America to have koalas on exhibit! You can feed them fresh eucalyptus leaves while you watch their adorable antics from your comfy seat at Koala Crossing.

4. Alamo Quarry Market features over 100 vendors with everything from food trucks, restaurants, clothing stores, garden centers, home décor shops and more. It also holds regular events like Cocktail Magic Tuesdays and After-Work Trivia Thursdays which make it perfect for people who want something different than just dinner out every night on vacation.

5. San Antonio has an amazing nightlife for adults as well! If you are looking to have a few drinks and dance the night away then head over to Dirty Bingo at The Parlor where they play old school hip hop, 80’s disco and country music that will get your feet tapping all night long.  6. There is plenty of shopping in San Antonio too with more than 170 stores within walking distance from one another making it easy to find everything you’re looking for without having to go anywhere else. You can find art galleries, antiques shops, specialty stores, and more!

7. The city is safe. San Antonio has the lowest crime rate of any major metropolitan area in Texas with a murder rate that’s less than half of what it was just 15 years ago! This means you can feel confident when traveling around our great town without worrying about your family being targeted for crimes like theft or assault. Crime rates have been steadily declining over the last decade which only boosts tourism to this beautiful place too!

8. There are fantastic live music options available as well. Whether you want an intimate acoustic show at Sam’s Burger Joint on East Commerce Street or prefer something louder and wilder then head over to The Rock Box where they offer everything from punk rock shows to country music concerts. There is something for everyone in San Antonio!

A severe thunderstorm watch in effect for 4 counties in the area

Families urge people partying during fiesta to have a safe, sober ride home, a local initiative has brought together more than a dozen bars that all offer free rides to prevent drunk driving.

SAN ANTONIO – Natalie Garza said every day has been hard to bear since the death of her sister, Yulissa.

“Really hard,” Garza said. “She had a big heart. She would help everybody.”

Yulissa Valero was hit and killed by a drunk driver three months ago. Her family hopes sharing her story will stop people from drinking and driving during Fiesta.

“It’s scary because we know a lot of drinking goes on,” Garza said. “You can take somebody’s life, like the way Yulissa’s life was taken. It was just so unexpected. It’s hard.”

Garza urges people across San Antonio to plan and have a safe ride home. She’s pushing ridesharing and designated drivers. She’s also working with the Free Riders Program initiative.

“We want to be preventive. We don’t want to be reactive,” said Azeza Salama, the executive director of the program. “In our city, this is a huge problem.”

Salama lived through a drunk driving crash, but it forever changed her life.

“In 2016, myself and my family were hit head-on by a drunk driver,” Salama said. “Unfortunately, my fiancé at the time did not survive the crash.”

The Free Riders Program is an initiative that brings together more than a dozen bars. Their owners all have pledged to provide free rides to prevent impaired driving. You can tell a bar is a part of the initiative by a designated “Free Ride” green sticker. Salama said these are usually posted in bathrooms or near the bar itself.

“So someone sees a sticker like this in a bathroom. What are the next steps?” asked KSAT reporter Avery Everett.

“It’s as simple as just walking up to the bartender or manager and asking, ‘Hey, you know what, think I’ve had too much to drink. Can can I get a ride home?’”

Salama said some participating spots include El Camino, Perfect 10, Scarlet, Sugar’s, Hills & Dales, Aye Que Chula, Perfect Tender, Besame and Dive.

BCSO will be stepping up traffic patrol this year to look for people driving while intoxicated.

Rise in airplane incidents? Search our database for mishaps in San Antonio and Texas.

M ultiple airplane incidents, including a handful of Texas-related incidents,  made headlines recently and prompted official investigations.

Clusters of plane mishaps might leave the impression that “the sky is falling,” but that’s not the case, according to Peter Knudson, spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board.  

An Express-News analysis of the agency’s data shows aviation incident rates for commercial airlines haven’t increased significantly. 

"The accident and incident rate, they've (been) pretty stable," Knudson said. "What we do see is clusters of events.”

While the most recent incident involving San Antonio International Airport was in 2021, Texas has seen a recent cluster of events, mostly involving Houston-area airports. An engine fire caused by bubble wrap forced a United Airlines flight from Houston to return to the airport. The same week, a United plane landing in Houston slid off a slick runway into the grass.

A third incident reported by Click2Houston involved a United fight returning to Houston due to a loose door handle. In January, American Airlines aircraft diverted to Houston after a report of a fire in an oven in the aircraft's galley. In April, a Southwest Airlines flight from Denver to Houston issued an emergency landing after the aircraft lost an engine cover mid-flight. 

But a cluster of incidents doesn’t necessarily indicate an overall rise. A series of back-to-back mishaps may be followed by a long period with little activity, he said.

“It's hard to explain,” Knudson said of incident clusters. “They're not necessarily connected.”

Have there really been more airplane incidents lately?

The Express-News analysis looked at commercial airline incidents investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board from 2008-2023, with causes ranging from turbulence and engine failure to lightning strikes and mid-air collisions.

The year with the highest rate of incidents was 2010, with 14 incidents per 100,000 flights. Rates fell steadily to a low of about 6 per 100,000 flights in 2015 and then began climbing again. But aside from 2021, which saw 11 per 100,000 flights, incident rates have lingered around 8 or 9 per 100,000.

Why do these incidents happen?

Personnel and environmental factors have been the most common contributors to commercial flight incidents since 2008. Personnel issues were involved in about 54% of incidents and environmental issues contributed to about 42%, the agency’s data shows.

One of the biggest risks planes face from weather comes from strong thunderstorms, said Justin Ballard, a Hearst Newspapers meteorologist.

"Microbursts can quickly prove devastating to a plane taking off or landing," he said. "Microbursts produce strong and sudden wind gusts, posing a significant hazard to an aircraft during takeoff and landing due to sudden changes in wind speed and direction."

Other environmental issues can cause problems for an aircraft including reduced visibility in inclement weather, slippery runways, severe turbulence, and ice accumulation on the plane's wings and other critical surfaces. 

How many of these incidents happen in Texas?

In Texas, about 90 aviation incidents either started from or were headed to state airports with another 10 experiencing issues while over Texas. Fewer than five were flights traveling to or leaving San Antonio.

What are these incidents?

The National Transportation Safety Board is required to investigate plane issues that result in injury or plane damage. Only 4% of incidents investigated by the agency involve commercial flights.

Knudson said the purpose of the agency’s preliminary reports on the incidents isn’t to blame the pilot or imply that planes are falling apart. It’s to provide the public with information and help the aviation community prevent those issues in the future.
