Before you traipse through Tuscan vineyards or strike a pose with the Leaning Tower, there’s some red tape to cut. Fear not, we’re making this as painless as an Italian espresso shot.

What Is A Tourist/Visitor Visa To Italy?

A Schengan visa allows the individual to travel to all 27 countries associated with the Schengen area. Even if you only want to travel to Italy, you’ll still be allowed to go to the other 26 countries for as long as you possess a Schenegen visa.

A Schengen visa is purely for the purpose of tourism and sightseeing and is issued in the form of a sticker on the individual’s passport.

The visa, under any circumstances, cannot be used for purposes other than that of tourism. You cannot study on the basis of a Schengen visa and can also not apply for jobs. For these purposes, you can either apply for a student or work visa.

Do I Need To Apply For A Schengen Visa To Visit Italy?

Depending on your citizenship/nationality, the individual might not have to apply for a visa if he/she meets certain demands established by the Schengen states. 

There’s a list of above 60 countries which are exempted from applying for a visa to visit a Schengen state.

If an individual does or does not require a visa depends on certain factors:

Starting from 2024, all individuals from visa exempt countries will be required to have travel authorization for the purposes of entering the Schengen countries. The ETIAS is valid for up to 3 years .

• If you’re successful in passing the interview, submit the visa fee and wait for it to be processed.
• After the processing period, you’ll receive a Shengene visa sticker in your passport and will be allowed to travel to Italy.

Italy Tourist/Visitor Visa Application Requirements

The documents required for applying for a Schengen visa are as listed down below:

• Italy visa application form . Completed with all the details required with the individual’s signature at the end.
• The Schengen visa photo criteria required two recent photos of the individual, preferably no older than 3 months.
• A valid passport . It shouldn’t be older than 10 years and should have a 3 month validity period after that of your trip. It should also include at least 2 blank pages for attaching the Schengen visa sticker.
• A document of the itinerary which includes the dates of the flights and flight numbers so that the government can track when you enter and exit the Schengen area.
• Evidence regarding having purchased health insurance up to at least £30000 for the duration of your stay in Italy. 
• Proof of accommodation . Documents showing where you’ll be staying in Italy or showing rent agreement as evidence in case of renting out a place.
• Bank statements are required as proof of your financial stability to demonstrate that you can support yourself. A sponsorship letter will be required in case of the individual being sponsored by a host.
• Evidence of Civil status . This includes your marriage status, birth certificate of your children or death certificate of spouse etc.
• Employer contract
• A signed leave permission slip from the employer
• Income tax return
• Provide a duplicate of your business licence 
• Latest bank statements of the company 
• Enrollment proof
• Proof that the university has no problem with the student travelling.
• Letter of consent from the individuals legal guardians 
• Passport copies of parents/guardians.
• Proof of adoption in case of the individual being adopted.

The Italian government is rather strict when it comes to handing out travel visas so it can be a bit of a hassle to collect all the documentation required. You can visit the visa application centre or the embassy if you need any help.

Where To Apply For An Italy Tourist/Visit Visa?

The place where you’ll be submitting your Schengen visa application depends on where you plan on staying the most. If you only want to visit Italy, then you may have to apply at:

• Their embassy
• One of their consulates
• A visa centre
• The embassy or consulate of any other Schengen state which accepts visa applications for your preferred destination

If you plan on spending all your days in one of the Schengen countries then you’ll have to apply to their respective centres.

Also known as the Italy Schengen tourist visa , this permit allows people from around the world to enter the country for tourism purposes such as sightseeing, leisure activities, adventure activities, etc. Being a part of the Schengen C category, this is a short term permit and is valid for a duration of 90 days in a 180-day period. Available in the form of single-entry, double-entry, as well as multiple-entry, this allows you to visit your friends or family in Italy as well. 

The application for the tourist permit can be either by filling an offline application form or by filling an online application form. However, the submission is made offline. You may submit the application at one of the Italian appointed visa application centres (VAC).

Ensure that you submit the genuine documents and correct information. Any false information or fake documents can cause a visa rejection.  A refusal of your permit is considered to affect your future travel.

To be able to apply for the Schengen permit, you will have to meet the following conditions - 

• You must be in India while applying in the country. 
• You must apply to the mission that has jurisdiction over your state of residence.
• You will need to possess a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel.
• Your sole purpose of the visit has to be tourism alone. You may also visit family/friends.
• You must possess sufficient funds to cover your stay in the country.
• You should possess travel insurance. 
• You must apply for the permit only if -
• Italy is your only destination, or
• Italy is one of your multiple Schengen destinations -  in which case you will be spending the majority of the time in Italy, or, you are spending time in all the other destinations where Italy is your port of entry.

It is not possible to extend your Italian permit. Similar to other Schengen permits, short term visas are non-extendable. Meaning, you will have to leave the country upon expiry. If you do require another permit, you will have to apply it from your home country. However, you may be able to apply for an extension in certain extreme unforeseeable circumstances. 

After expiring my tourist visa for Italy, how long can I stay?

You may not stay for any amount of period once your permit expires. You are expected to leave the country before the visa expiry date. In case you do not leave, it is considered as a criminal offence, and you will get deported and banned for another entry. Alternately, if you want to stay back due to extreme circumstances, you may apply for an extension.

There are no mandatory medical requirements for the application of the tourist permit. Explanation of Terms

Visa Classification: The type of nonimmigrant visa you are applying for.

Fee: The reciprocity fee, also known as the visa issuance fee, you must pay. This fee is in addition to the nonimmigrant visa application fee (MRV fee).

Number of Entries: The number of times you may seek entry into the United States with that visa. "M" means multiple times. If there is a number, such as "One", you may apply for entry one time with that visa.

Validity Period: This generally means the visa is valid, or can be used, from the date it is issued until the date it expires, for travel with that visa. If your Validity Period is 60 months, your visa will be valid for 60 months from the date it is issued.

The validity of A-3, G-5, and NATO 7 visas may not exceed the validity of the visa issued to the person who is employing the applicant. The "employer" would have one of the following visa classifications:

• G-1 through G-4
• NATO 1 through NATO 6

An E-1 and E-2 visa may be issued only to a principal alien who is a national of a country having a treaty, or its equivalent, with the United States. E-1 and E-2 visas may not be issued to a principal alien if he/she is a stateless resident or national of a country without a treaty.  *When the spouse and children of an E-1 or E-2 principal alien are accorded derivative E-1 or E-2 status and are themselves a national of a country that does not have a treaty with the United States – the reciprocity schedule, including any reciprocity fees, of the principal alien’s country of nationality should be used.  **Spouse and children of an E-1 or E-2 visa principal applicant, where the spouse and children are also nationals of a country that has a treaty with the United States – the reciprocity schedule, including any reciprocity fees, of the spouse and children’s country of nationality should be used.  

*Example 1: John Doe is a national of Country A that has an E-1/E-2 treaty with the U.S. however his wife and child are nationals of Country B which has no treaty with the U.S. The wife and child would, therefore, be entitled to derivative status and receive the same reciprocity as John Doe, the principal visa holder. **Example 2:  Mike Doe is a national of Country Y that has an E-1/E-2 treaty with the U.S. however his wife and child are nationals of Country Z that also has a treaty with the U.S. The wife and child would, therefore, be entitled to derivative status and receive the reciprocity issued to nationals of Country Z.

The validity of H-1 through H-3, O-1 and O-2, P-1 through P-3, and Q visas may not exceed the period of validity of the approved petition or the number of months shown, whichever is less.

Under 8 CFR §214.2, H-2A and H-2B petitions may generally only be approved for nationals of countries that the Secretary of Homeland Security has designated as participating countries. The current list of eligible countries is available on USCIS's website for both H-2A and H-2B visas. Nationals of countries not on this list may be the beneficiary of an approved H-2A or H2-B petition in limited circumstances at the discretion of the Department of Homeland Security if specifically named on the petition.  

Derivative H-4, L-2, O-3, and P-4 visas, issued to accompanying or following-to-join spouses and children, may not exceed the validity of the visa issued to the principal alien.

There is no reciprocity fee for the issuance of a J visa if the alien is a United States Government grantee or a participant in an exchange program sponsored by the United States Government.

Also, there is no reciprocity fee for visa issuance to an accompanying or following-to-join spouse or child (J-2) of an exchange visitor grantee or participant.

In addition, an applicant is eligible for an exemption from the MRV fee if he or she is participating in a State Department, USAID, or other federally funded educational and cultural exchange program (program serial numbers G-1, G-2, G-3 and G-7).

However, all other applicants with U.S. Government sponsorships, including other J-visa applicants, are subject to the MRV processing fee.

Under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canadian and Mexican nationals coming to engage in certain types of professional employment in the United States may be admitted in a special nonimmigrant category known as the "trade NAFTA" or "TN" category. Their dependents (spouse and children) accompanying or following to join them may be admitted in the "trade dependent" or "TD" category whether or not they possess Canadian or Mexican nationality. Except as noted below, the number of entries, fees and validity for non-Canadian or non-Mexican family members of a TN status holder seeking TD visas should be based on the reciprocity schedule of the TN principal alien.

Canadian Nationals

Since Canadian nationals generally are exempt from visa requirement, a Canadian "TN' or "TD" alien does not require a visa to enter the United States. However, the non-Canadian national dependent of a Canadian "TN", unless otherwise exempt from the visa requirement, must obtain a "TD" visa before attempting to enter the United States. The standard reciprocity fee and validity period for all non-Canadian "TD"s is no fee, issued for multiple entries for a period of 36 months, or for the duration of the principal alien's visa and/or authorized period of stay, whichever is less. See 'NOTE' under Canadian reciprocity schedule regarding applicants of Iranian, Iraqi or Libyan nationality.

Mexican Nationals

Mexican nationals are not visa-exempt. Therefore, all Mexican "TN"s and both Mexican and non-Mexican national "TD"s accompanying or following to join them who are not otherwise exempt from the visa requirement (e.g., the Canadian spouse of a Mexican national "TN") must obtain nonimmigrant visas.

Applicants of Iranian, Iraqi, Libyan, Somalian, Sudanese, Syrian or Yemeni nationality, who have a permanent resident or refugee status in Canada/Mexico, may not be accorded Canadian/Mexican reciprocity, even when applying in Canada/Mexico. The reciprocity fee and period for "TD" applicants from Libya is $10.00 for one entry over a period of 3 months. The Iranian and Iraqi "TD" is no fee with one entry over a period of 3 months.

Q-2 (principal) and Q-3 (dependent) visa categories are in existence as a result of the 'Irish Peace Process Cultural and Training Program Act of 1998'. However, because the Department anticipates that virtually all applicants for this special program will be either Irish or U.K. nationals, the Q-2 and Q-3 categories have been placed only in the reciprocity schedules for those two countries. Q-2 and Q-3 visas are available only at the Embassy in Dublin and the Consulate General in Belfast.

No S visa may be issued without first obtaining the Department's authorization.

V-2 and V-3 status is limited to persons who have not yet attained their 21st birthday. Accordingly, the period of validity of a V-2 or V-3 visa must be limited to expire on or before the applicant's twenty-first birthday.

Posts may not issue a T-1 visa. A T-1 applicant must be physically present in the United States, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands or a U.S. port of entry, where he/she will apply for an adjustment of status to that of a T-1. The following dependents of a T-1 visa holder, however, may be issued a T visa at a U.S. consular office abroad:

• T-2 (spouse)
• T-3 (child)
• T-4 (parent)

The validity of NATO-5 visas may not exceed the period of validity of the employment contract or 12 months, whichever is less.

The validity of CW-1 and CW-2 visas shall not exceed the maximum initial period of admission allowed by DHS (12 months) or the duration of the transition period ending December 31, 2014, whichever is shortest.

The validity of E-2C visas shall not exceed the maximum initial period of admission allowed by DHS (24 months) or the duration of the transition period ending December 31, 2014, whichever is shortest.

Birth, Death, Burial Certificates

Birth certificates.

Available. The Certificato (or Estratto) di Nascita is an extract of the report of birth that provides the date and place of birth. It can be obtained from the Office of Vital Statistics (Ufficio di Stato Civile) of the town where the applicant was born. Parents' names have not been included in Italian birth, marriage, citizenship, and family status certificates since 1955. To request a birth certificate including the parent's names, the applicant should apply to the Office of Vital Statistics, citing Article 3 of Presidential Decree of May 2, 1957 (No. 432) "...ai sensi dell'art. 3 Decreto Presidente della Republica 2 Maggio 1957."

The Atto Integrale di Nascita is a more complete document than the Certificato or Estratto di Nascita. In addition to the date of birth, it contains current information regarding the subject's civil status, such as the subsequent legitimation of a child, recognition by the natural parents, adoption, marriage, annulment of marriage, or death of a spouse. This document should ordinarily only be required to verify the legitimation of birth or adoption of a child. The Atto Integrale di Nascita can be obtained only after receipt of special authorization from the Procura Della Republica of the judicial district where the applicant was born.

Death Certificates

Available. (Certificato di Morte) Issued by the Office of Vital Statistics (Ufficio di Stato Civile) of the town where the applicant was born or lived.

Marriage, Divorce Certificates

Marriage decrees.

Available. (Certificato di Matrimonio) Issued by the Office of Vital Statistics (Ufficio di Stato Civile) of the town where the person was born or resides. For those born outside of Italy it is issued by the Office of Vital Statistics of either the town where the marriage was performed or the town where the foreign birth of the person was recorded.

Same-sex marriages are not recognized.

Divorce Certificates

Available. A Divorce Decree (Decreto di Divorzio) is issued by the town where the divorce was registered. Prior to 1974 only annulments or legal separations were granted by the Republic of Italy. Divorce has been legal since that date. A notation of divorce may be included on a birth or marriage certificate.

• Certificate of Single Status

Available. (Certificato di Stato Libero) This document certifies the single status of persons who are of legal age to marry (18 or over). It is available from the Office of Vital Statistics (Ufficio di Stato Civile) of the town where the applicant was born or resides.

• Certificate of Widow or Widower Status

Available. (Certificato di Vidovanza) Issued by the Office of Vital Statistics (Ufficio di Stato Civile) of the town where the applicant was born or resides.

Adoption Certificates

Available. An Adoption Decree (Decreto di Adozione) may be obtained through the Juvenile Court (Tribunale dei Minorenni) of the district where the adoption took place.

Note: Because of wartime destruction of church and state archives, it is impossible to obtain pre-war documents. Substitutes for birth and marriage certificates are authorized by the Italian Civil Code in the form of affidavits (Atti di Notorieta) sworn by four witnesses before the Lower Court (Pretura) of the district in which the interested person resides or was born.

Individuals who emigrated to work abroad and those who emigrated to join the head of the family may receive the following documents without charge. (For others, there may be a fee.)

It is simpler for those who do not live in Italy to apply for the documents they need through a family member who resides in Italy, or through the mayor of the town in which they were born. Former residents who are not Italian nationals may apply through the nearest Italian consulate or through the consulate of their country.

Identity Card

Police, court, prison records, police records.

Available. The Certificato Generale del Casellario Giudiziale is a certified national record of final court convictions and decisions regarding mental incompetency and bankruptcy or a statement that no such record exists (Nulla).The Certificato dei Carichi Pendenti is a certified record of pending criminal charges, or a statement that no such charges exist, from the office of the Procura della Repubblica in the applicant's place of residence. Both certificates are required from immigrant visa applicants residing in Italy.

Persons within Italy can obtain the Casellario Giudiziale by applying in person or by mail at any office of the Procura della Repubblica. The Carichi Pendenti must be obtained at the Procura della Repubblica in the area that the applicant resides. Such offices are located in all major cities and in many small cities and large towns. Those who apply in person must submit a written request, a photocopy of a photo ID and all fees; the certificates are usually provided the day of the request.

Those requesting the certificate by mail, whether from within or outside Italy, must submit a written request, a photocopy of a photo i.d., and all fees, along with a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Mail requests are normally processed within three working days. Information concerning fees and application procedures is available from any office of the Procura della Repubblica or online at http:// www.giustizia.it .

Record of Conviction

Available. If the person has been arrested and tried, he/she and/or his/her representative may request a copy of the sentence in person or by mail from the court where the trial took place.

Prison Records

Not available except as incorporated in the police record.

Military Records

Available. The Foglio Matricolare is the usual record of military service. It gives complete details regarding military service, including convictions before court martials. Officers are issued the Stato di Servizio that contains more complete information than the Congedo Illimitato that is merely a discharge certificate. Military records may not be available to those who have not reported to their military district after leaving Italy. There is an fee for this service.

Passports & Other Travel Documents

Travel Document (Titre de Voyage) which has a gray cover is issued to refugees granted permanent asylum in Italy on the basis of the Geneva Convention of February 28, 1951. Travel document (Titre de Voyage) which has a green cover is a courtesy travel document issued to those other than refugees, usually stateless persons, who for any reason cannot obtain a passport from their government. Both documents are valid for one year and may be renewed annually if the bearer maintains the same status. Documents must contain an Italian reentry visa stamp whenever the bearer travels abroad. Both of these documents are considered to meet the passport requirements of the INA.

Italy began issuing machine-readable passports (MRP) in January of 1998. Only a limited amount of Italian embassies and consular offices issued the MRP the first year. The Italian Government is incrementally updating their posts to issue machine-readable passports. The old Italian passports were issued initially for a period of five years, and were able to be renewed for five more. Therefore, it will be at least ten years until the old-style passport ceases to exist in volume.

Other Records

Available. (Stato di Famiglia) Contains the names, dates and places of birth, marital status, and sometimes the occupations of the immediate family.

Airport Transit Visa (A)

The airport transit visa allows a foreign national subject to the obligation to enter the international transit area of airports without entering the territory of the Contracting Party which issued the visa.

(Maximum duration of stay: 24 hours, Applicant cannot leave the airport)

This kind of Visa is also granted to Seamen who need to embark a ship docked in an Italian Port.

Seamen are not required to book an appointment to lodge their application for transit Visa and they can walk-in as they can benefit of our dedicated counter.

Sport Visa (C)

This visa is issued to sports people (athletes and trainers) invited to participate in competitions (both professionals and amateurs) only for a short-term period of time, maximum 90 days. The issuance of this visa must be requested by the competent Italian Federation and duly authorized by the Italian National Olympic Committee (C.O.N.I.).

Seafarer- Transit ( C )

• For foreign overseas workers who are to embark ships carrying an Italian flag, please subject to the provisions relating to transit visas, and for contractual employees of foreign companies recruited to embark on Italian cruise ship for complementary services (referred to article 17 of the law 5 December 1986, n. 856), take note that the specific dispositions of the law that respects the matter are to be observed and an authorization to work is not necessary. Furthermore, they permit permanent boarding in the ship, even if the same ship sails in territorial seas or docks in a national port.
• The foreign overseas workers, who intend to disembark from a ship carrying an Italian or foreign flag in national zones or around the Schengen area, need to leave the transit visa in the border with the presence of the ship to the responsible captain of the Italian port. In case the disembarkation of the foreign worker is within Italian territory, the general rules on entry and residence applies basing on the Testo Unico sull'Immigrazione.
• This visa is given for a period of time of less than 90 days.

Want to work remotely in Italy? The country just launched its new digital nomad visa.

Remote workers with dreams of working from the rolling hills of Tuscany or the cliffs of Positano are now one step closer to making that reality. Italy launched a new digital nomad visa.

Two years after its announcement, the highly anticipated digital nomad visa officially became available for those eligible on April 4.  

“Italian-style, everything happens slowly,” said Nick Metta, a lawyer for the law firm Studio Legale Metta , which has helped Americans relocate to Italy for decades. “Now there is a pipeline of people waiting just to file the application. It's been a long-awaited visa.” 

Most of Metta’s clients would previously apply for a student visa, which allowed them to work part time in Italy. 

Under the new visa, people will be able to work from Italy for one year, with the option to renew once their visa is due for expiration. Without a visa, U.S. travelers could only stay in Italy for up to 90 days without the ability to work.

The launch makes Italy the latest European country to offer a digital nomad visa , which has already been available in Greece and Hungary.

Who can apply for a digital nomad visa in Italy?

According to the official decree , the visa is meant for those who “carry out a highly qualified work activity through the use of technological tools that allow you to work remotely.” 

The regulations define eligible applicants as “digital nomads,” self-employed freelancers, “remote workers,” or those employed by a company outside of Italy and can work from anywhere, according to Studio Legale Metta.

To qualify for the visa, the applicant has to meet certain requirements:

◾ A university or college degree or an accredited professional license.

◾ Six months of work experience in the industry, or five years for applicants without a university degree.

◾ An existing employment contract.

◾ A criminal record check.

◾ Proof of an annual income of 28,000 euros (about $29,880.06).

◾ Evidence of housing in Italy.

◾ Evidence of health insurance coverage.

Applicants can also apply to have family members join them on their Italian move, but the government has to give the final approval. 

How do I apply for the digital nomad visa in Italy?

Thankfully, Metta said the paperwork for the digital nomad visa isn’t “too complicated.” 

The first stop for interested applicants will be the Italian Consulate for their area. “Consulates are basically the front of the government to receive the applications,” Metta said. Interested applicants can book an appointment with the consulate and start gathering their necessary documents. People can also apply by mailing in their application. (However, Metta did mention consulate websites are often confusing and outdated, so working with a relocation service can make things easier.)

To apply, applicants will also need a passport with an expiration date at least three months after the end of the visa period and two passport-sized photos.

Relocation services can also help people navigate the sometimes complicated process of applying for a visa, such as negotiating early termination penalties with landlords in Italy. 

These services also help people with state and tax planning, especially if people own assets in the U.S., like a house. Once in Italy, people need to register their residency with the town hall, which will determine what sort of taxes they’ll pay. People can speak to an international tax specialist to figure out their future taxes as well. 

How much will the visa cost?

According to Studio Legale Metta, the application fee is 116 euros (about $123.78) per person.

How long will the application process take?

Not too long, actually. Metta estimates the process could take just three weeks if applicants are “well-organized and have all your tax documents filed.”

SCHENGEN VISA

The Schengen visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days and allows the visa holder to travel to all of the 27 European Countries that signed the Schengen Agreement namely: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

If you intend to visit one or more Schengen Countries in the course of a single trip, you must apply for a visa at the Consulate of the Country that is your main destination (i.e. where you will stay longer). Documentation required

• Proof of residence within the Toronto consular jurisdiction area : domestic utility bill or driver’s license (original and a photocopy).
• For non-Canadians, proof of legal residence in Canada : Canadian permanent residence card or visa valid for at least three months after the date of re-entry (original and a photocopy).
• For travelers not returning to Canada after leaving the Schengen area : relevant visa or travel document authorizing entry into the Country of destination, and a photocopy.
• Electronic Schengen Visa application form carefully and correctly completed and signed. Please ensure that you leave no blank spaces. If a question does not apply to you, enter N/A (not applicable). Be sure to print the form in high resolution.
• One recent passport-size colour photo (must have been taken less than six months before the application), size 35mm x 40mm, full-face and light coloured background. • Prepaid Xpresspost post envelope (or UPS pre-addressed envelope) with your address already filled (TO) and the Address of the consulate as sender (FROM), with a photocopy to return your passport .
• The visa fee paid in Canadian dollars . Visa fees can be paid at the counter, preferably by Canadian debit card (credit cards cannot be accepted) or alternatively in cash or through money order/bank draft payable to the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto (Canadian dollars only). Because of the fluctuation of the exchange rate, the type of visa and duration of stay, the fees are subject to change. Please refer to the dedicated page on this website.
• A copy of your round trip flight reservation or ticket and full itinerary . Buying your ticket in advance does not ensure that a visa will be issued.
• Hotel booking for each day of your stay in the Schengen area stating the number of reservation, name of the applicant, address, and telephone number of the hotel, OR letter of invitation (declaration of hospitality), signed by the person invi ting, plus a copy of his/her ID ( in case of person without Italian citizenship, copy of his/her Italian permanent residence permit , ‘’ Permesso di soggiorno’’) . Who can apply for Italy's digital nomad visa?

Italy's new digital nomad visa is aimed toward what its government describes as a "highly skilled worker" who is a citizen of a non-European Union state, "carrying out a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely, both as a worker self-employed or as a collaborator or employee of a company even if not resident in Italy."

A "highly skilled worker," in this instance, is defined as a university graduate or one with at least five years of professional work experience.

Italy is offering "digital nomad" visas. Here's how to get one.

Ever dream of working from the picturesque Amalfi Coast?  You might now be able to with a new "digital nomad" visa that Italy is offering foreigners who wish to pack up their laptops and venture abroad.

The Italian government signed the program into law in March 2022, but only opened applications on April 5 — two years later. In doing so, Italy follows dozens of other countries in establishing a program to attract foreign remote workers who want to experience a European lifestyle while keeping their earnings tied to U.S.-based companies. 

Drawing foreigners in can help boost local economies, particularly in smaller Italian towns where populations are dwindling as local residents age. But some experts warn that an influx of people earning U.S. salaries could drive up prices for local residents earning far less.  

The new digital nomad visas are valid for one year, and can be renewed.

Am I eligible?

Applicants must meet a range of criteria in order to be eligible for the visas. For one, a worker must have the ability to do their job remotely, using a laptop or other tech tools. Workers must also be able to provide proof of employment or contract work with a firm based outside of Italy. Both employees of companies and freelance workers are invited to apply. 

Candidates must have either a college-level degree or the equivalent in job experience. Additionally, a worker must be able to demonstrate that they've perviously worked remotely for a period of at least six months. 

There's an income threshold, too, of roughly $30,000 to apply. And, you can't have been convicted of a crime within the past five years. You must also have health insurance, and be able to demonstrate that you have a place to live in Italy.

How do I apply?

Visit your local Italian consulate's website for instructions, which vary by location. While application forms vary by consulate, the Italian consulate in New York has a form on its site that asks for basic information like one's place of birth and passport information.

The application fee is just over $120, according to Italian law firm Studio Legale Metta . 

Within eight days of arrival in Italy, digital nomads must also apply for a residence permit.

Previously Italy had a 90 day rule that meant visitors could only stay for that long without a work visa.

Italy became the latest EU country to launch a Digital Nomad visa, giving remote workers the perfect opportunity to combine work with more pleasure while traveling around the country. As of 4 April, a new law now allows people without an EU passport (or any other visa) to legally stay in the country and work long-term.

Italy's visa is definitely not one of the easiest EU Digital Nomad visas to obtain. To be clear, anyone looking to apply must be considered 'highly skilled' which the Italian government considers someone “who carries out a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely, both as a worker self-employed or as a collaborator or employee of a company even if not resident in Italy.” This law has been introduced under article 27 of the immigration code, reports Euronews .

There is also a financial barrier to holding this visa, related to the cost of Italian healthcare. Applicants must be a freelancer or on a company payroll and their annual salary must be at least €28,000 (just above $30,000) but crucially the law doesn't stipulate that the money has to come from the remote work (it could come from any source of income).

Applicants must also hold a college degree (minimum three years) or a professional license for their trade or be able to show documentation of notable experience. They must also be able to prove six months of working experience in the field they wish to work in remotely.

You would also need proof of possible lodging in Italy and proof of healthcare cover in the country, either privately or by signing up with the Italian National Health Service at a cost of €2,000 ($2,100) per year. Family members can potentially come too, but at the discretion of the local police, and anyone convicted of a criminal offence in the past five years will be automatically disqualified from the application process.

If you're interested, you would need to apply at your local Italian Consulate—before you arrive in Italy—and it would be valid for one year (although you can potentially renew it once in the country). Once you arrive in Italy you would have eight days to apply for a residence permit, also known as permesso di soggiorno . Self-employed people would also need to apply for an Italian tax VAT number and should seek advice on how best to pay local taxes.

Italy now joins Japan on the list of countries that offer Digital Nomad visas in a bid to boost economic development by enticing high-income foreign workers—Japan opened its doors to Digital Nomads earning more than $63,000 per year, plus proof of their own private health insurance for the duration of their one-year stay.

A recent TimeOut article ranked EU countries on the basis of how easy it was to apply and receive a Digital Nomad visa. It ranked Romania in first place because of the ease of the process (it requires a minimum monthly salary of $4,000 and has an online response time of just two weeks). Croatia came in second place, with a minimum monthly salary requirement of just over $2,500 plus accommodation requirements.

Spain ranked in the middle of the list—you need to apply in person at a Spanish embassy and the wait can be between 15-45 days for a response, but the minimum monthly salary requirement is relatively low—$2,300.

The mediterranean island of Cyrpus appears to be one of the most difficult Digital Nomad visas to obtain as you must first be in the country, which might require the need for a tourist visa first. The minimum monthly salary requirement is $3,800 and you'd also need to provide blood analysis and chest X-rays to show that you don’t have Hepatitis B, C, tuberculosis or HIV.

Andorra, Montenegro and Latvia plan to launch similar schemes soon and while Germany doesn't have a Digital Nomad scheme, it does offer something called a Freelancer Visa which is only valid for three months but under the right conditions, it could be turned into a three-year residence permit.
