I had dinner inside a ‘volcano’ at this new immersive restaurant and bar

This new spot near Madison Square Park brings theatricality to your dinner plate.

On Monday, my dinner table began smoking and my dish emerged from a glass cover filled with even more smoke. The room glowed with the amber-red hue of lava and the sound of crackling fire filled the space. 

I was at Journey , a new restaurant, bar and lounge that is bringing “theatrical gastronomy” to New York City with immersive video installations paired with fine dining and mixology.

On its surface, it may sound like a gimmick, but a deeper dive—actually experiencing it—yields a fun night out with actually good drinks and food.

Journey, which had a soft opening this week at its Madison Square Park location at 27 West 24th Street, is a celebration of travel and the connections we make with people on our…well, journeys. 

The playfully-decorated space shows off a massive collection of globes from thrift shops and antique stores, 3D sculptures of the world’s most famous landmarks and buildings above its bar, a display of replica antiquities, and a wall of moving classical art a-la Harry Potter.  

Each area within the space—the bar, the salon, and the café—has a theatrical element. 

At the bar, the cocktails you order (Legends of the Fall, Bloody Sunset, Apocalypto and Adordable Ruby) have accompanying comedic skits via augmented reality projected right in front of you on the bar top, including whiskey professor Ben Vereen.

In the “Epic Café,” where you can order a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner, the dishware has hidden 3D designs that you can unlock through an app on your phone.

In the beautiful and boothed Salon, which contains the collection of replica antiquities, projections bring sculptures to life and a hostess bedecked in stunning “FashionTech” couture tells you the stories behind them, adding a layer of live performance to your experience.

The bar, Salon and Epic Café each have their own menus from chef Edward Hong.

Two additional experiences are available at Journey: Journey Odyssey and Journey 360.

Opening on Friday, the 50-seat, ticketed experience Journey Odyssey creates a multisensory dinner experience at tables for two and four. Some of Broadway’s most talented performers— Cady Huffman and Judy Kaye —have filmed a series of amusing vignettes that introduce each of the five courses, which hail from different locales: an appetizer in Tokyo, the first course in Venice, and the entrée in Buenos Aires.

Perhaps the most impressive and immersive of all the experiences at Journey is Journey 360, which is where the firey table inside a volcano exists.

The ticketed culinary adventure, which fits 20 people at a time around a long, communal table, features 360 projection mapping that transports diners to four different locations across the world.

On Monday, I did the 360 experience and was whisked away (on a virtual airship named Celestine) from the top of the Empire State Building to the Amazonian rainforest to the artic, from a shipwreck under the sea to the inside of a volcano and finally to outer space. Throughout the entire five-course prix-fixe meal, the visuals and soundscape surrounding us were entertaining and were made even more exciting by an actor wearing a techie dress who led us through the trip.

Each dish corresponded to a setting—Amazonian greens (a salad made with Yuca, tocacho, hearts of palm, Cupaucu vinaigrette) in the rainforest; gin-cured arctic salmon (with cucumber, horseradish, apple and dill) at the Artic; black cod (with miyoga, bok choy and yuzu dashi glaze) under the sea; braised veal cheek (with forbidden rice risotto, harissa and marscapone); and raspberry mousse with chocolate gelato (almond texture, cardamom foam and Grand Marnier) in space.

While in the volcano, waiters placed dry ice on the table to make it smoke, then they brought out the veal, covered with glass domes. In one synchronous movement, the waiters lifted the domes and vapor poured out across the dish and our place settings. It was the crescendo, the high point, of the entire meal and it was indeed theatrical.

And yes, the visuals were fun, but the best part of the whole experience was seeing this all unfold with the people (strangers) around me. I ended up grabbing cocktails with a couple sitting across the way afterward in the salon, which is not a typical thing for me to do.

LET THE SWIFT-BACKLASH BEGIN — I think what Taylor Swift and her camp have accomplished has been nothing short of sensational. I’m not particularity a huge fan. Swapping music stories of behind-the-scenes escapades and ill-fated romances is not my idea of music. I mean, I can get personal, but I am very definitely not a Swift-ee.

With any success like this naturally comes the internet-trolls. And they can certainly be mean too. Witness these 2 posts:

** She doesn’t work WITH any producers. She sings. Her life has been a complete lie since the beginning. She has no idea what the truth is. I know the woman who wrote her first two albums and trust me. She has never written a single song or lyric herself. They can make her say anything they want and what they want her to say should be of concern or this

** I’ve been a fairly consistent fan in the past but this definitely felt like egg in the face. It was so lacking in creativity and just felt like someone read their high school poetry over mid melodies but expected me to think it was classy because of the marketing. I’m probably late to the party on folks who’ve already called her out for that but we all have our journey I guess 🤷‍♀️ 😂

Nothing succeeds like success. As I’ve said many, many times: Once you hit the top, there’s nowhere to go but down!

So are others who’ve waited too long: Dionne Warwick, the late Big Mama Thornton, the MC5, Temptations songwriter Norman Whitfield (also deceased), John Mayall, 90, the most influential blues musician, is in. So is the late Alexis Korner. Suzanne DePasse, the hardest working woman in the music biz, who has guided Motown for 50 years, will get the Ahmet Ertegun Award. Also, in: Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton. Foreigner, and the late Jimmy Buffett. In R&B, Kool & the Gang, and Mary J. Blige are in. So is the cutting-edge group A Tribe Called Quest. The Rock Hall ceremony will take place in October, in Cleveland. It will be a long show, but well worth it. The Hall is righting wrongs incurred while Jann Wenner was in charge. It’s like the fall of the Berlin Wall. Congrats to John Sykes for getting this so right!

Once again: an interesting list. But, honestly, how can The Guess Who still not be in? I watched Patti Smith’s induction speech for Lou Reed, back in 2015 and then watched Laurie Anderson’s acceptance speech, as Lou had already passed. Both inspirational and a must-see. Somehow, the R&R Hall events these days just don’t seem to have the muster of that moment.

She also appeared in the November 11, 1982, season 3 episode 8…”Foiled Again” of Magnum, P.I. with Tom Selleck. She was also cast and appeared as Adriana La Cerva’s mother in The Sopranos .

In April 2018, McCormack joined the cast of General Hospital temporarily replacing Leslie Charleson in the role of Monica Quartermaine .

McCormack portrayed Dr. March, the child psychiatrist consulted in the 2018 television remake of The Bad Seed  that will air this Sunday onLifetime directed and starring Rob Lowe.

From May 3 – June 30, she will be starring with Dan Lauria in  Just Another Day  at Theater555.

Glen-Gery Launches First U.S. Exclusive Edition of Materiality at Dazzling New York Event

Glen-Gery  is once again bringing beautiful artistic impressions to the world. On April 18, they hosted an exclusive launch event for the first U.S. edition of “Materiality.” Over 300 guests gathered at Brickworks Design Studio on 5 th Avenue for a spectacular event that showcased lively discussions with experts during “Shapes to the X Degree.”

The discussion was moderated by Morris Adjmi of Morris Adjmi Architects and spotlighted panelists Stanley Saitowtiz of Stanley Saitowitz | Natoma Architects Inc; Gregory Hoss of David M. Schwarz Architects; Kent Suhrbier, FAIA, LEED AP of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson; Ben Widger, AIA of Kennedy Violich Architects; Arthur Chang of NADAAA Inc. and Diego Samuel of HDR.

“In an era where architectural trends and materials come and go, brick’s enduring beauty, versatility and resilience stand out as a cornerstone in shaping structures that transcend time and inspire generations,” says Tim Leese, director of marketing for Brickworks North America. “Within its pages, Materiality: Brick in contemporary university architecture vividly illustrates this belief, showcasing the most exceptional architectural projects and designs from universities across the U.S.”

Featured architects brilliantly discussed how unique architectural designs and details can be achieved using masonry. Each honored professional spent time passionately explaining projects around America that re-shaped the modern landscape. It was a fascinating presentation that the audience enjoyed from start to finish.

The “Materiality” discussion was followed by Glen-Gery announcing its first-ever architect collaboration program to educate and empower the current and future generations of architects and designers.

All event attendees, including architects, designers and students, were given a chance to receive a one-of-a-kind collaboration opportunity with Glen-Gery to become an honorary member of its R&D Team. Those chosen will have the chance to visit the company’s Mid-Atlantic factory in Pennsylvania where they will work with Glen-Gery to design a custom brick shape, which can then serve as the centerpiece for conceptual building project renderings or sketches, cementing the program’s transformative impact.

Outstanding building designs that were in the spotlight on the special night included:

• Zeppos Residential College at Vanderbilt University: A monumental 260,000-square-foot residential building with a collegiate gothic-style structure. Through the use of limestone details, patterned brick and a warm palette of interior materials, the building scale is humanizing and creates a series of public and private spaces, bringing comfort and familiarity to residents.
• The Iribe Center of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Maryland: Peeling back the layers of this building project, the two-part structure showcases the intricacies of the non-structural application of brick. Through the use of parametric modeling, an abstract pattern was translated into a system of brick that creates the illusion of movement along the interior walls.
• The Institute for Data Science at University of Rochester: As the signature focus of the University’s strategic plan, the 61,000-square-foot research institute’s design treats each brick as a digital ‘pixel’ of information. Shadows from the projecting bricks activate the facades, creating dynamic, textural surfaces that communicate natural environment data across the days and seasons.

The Path Fund Inc.® and Avery Rehl are pleased to announce this special celebration of Love on Mother’s Day, Rockers On The Rise: With Love. The event will feature some of the most talented young performers of the next generation. Rockers On The Rise: With LoveRockers On The Rise: With Love is on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 6 p.m. at The Cutting Room.

Rockers On The Rise  is The PATH Fund’s new mentorship initiative that enables young artists to audition, perform, direct and produce their own shows with personalized mentoring and hands-on training to gain real-world experience. Having been a part of the annual   Rockers On Broadway®   concert series, Avery Rehl was inspired to lead this year’s Rockers-type event to support the arts community.

“I’ve had such a great time working with Cori Gardner and Donnie Kehr, and I’ve learned a lot from them as I’ve developed my performing career. Singing in Rockers On Broadway has been a great experience, and now producing Rockers On The Rise is giving me further insights into how the industry works. In the future, I look forward to giving back to the community and helping young artists grow with the PATH Fund.”, says Rehl.

The evening will feature the original Jonathan Tunick orchestrations played by a thirty-piece orchestra, and will also feature a selection of Michael Bennett’s original choreography restaged by original cast member Mary Jane Houdina.

This unique concert series features a different lineup of performers for each song, rather than a role portrayed by one actor for the entire evening. Additionally, in lieu of the musical’s book scenes, backstage stories and anecdotes from the creation of the original production are woven between songs.

The evening will be hosted by Kurt Peterson, who originated the role of Young Ben in the 1971 Broadway production, as well as licensing executive and theatre historian Ted Chapin, whose memoir Everything Was Possible is taken from his daily diaries during the pre-Broadway run of Follies, on which he served as intern during his senior year of college.

Follies, book by James Goldman, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, produced originally on Broadway by Harold Prince, orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, premiered on Broadway on April 4, 1971, at the Winter Garden Theatre in a production directed by Harold Prince and Michael Bennett, with choreography by Bennett.  The winner of seven Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for best musical, Follies developed almost immediate cult and legendary status following its closing on July 1, 1972, after playing 522 performances and 12 previews.  Scores of revivals followed on Broadway, in the West End, in regional theaters, and throughout the world.  This concert is presented by special arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh.

On Thursday, February 16, 2023, City Council Member Erik Bottcher and other local elected officials came together to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of JOURNEY , a new restaurant, bar and lounge in NoMad, bringing “theatrical gastronomy” to New York City. The new venue offers a blend of immersive video installations, fine dining, FashionTech and Broadway performers.

JOURNEY is the unique dining entertainment enterprise from Tony Award-winning producer Marc Routh ( The Producers, Hairspray) and restauranteur Alex Cesaria . The concept and execution of the space was created through the collaboration of a team culled from the worlds of Broadway, fashion, multi-media and the culinary arts in which the intent was to offer an original and futuristic gastronomic experience.

JOURNEY incorporates four experiences under one roof:

• JOURNEY Odyssey, where live and filmed performance bring diners’ tabletops to life with comic adventures led by an award-winning Broadway cast;

The menu includes dishes such as New York City – Tomato with Smoked Crème Fraiche, Crispy Shallots, Red Onion Jam, and Basil; Rain Forest – Amazonia Greens with Yuca, Tacacho, Hearts of Palm, and Cupaucu Vinaigrette; Volcano – King Oyster Mushroom with Forbidden Rice Risotto, Harissa, Mascarpone; and Out of Space – Raspberry Mousse with Chocolate Ice Cream, Almond Textures, and Cardamom Foam. Cocktails come with names like Apocalypto (Mezcal Joven, D’Aristi Xtabentum Honey Liquor, egg whites, lime juice, and cinnamon), and Tsukimi (Sweet Potato Shochu, Sweet Potato Puree, Maple-Cinnamon Syrup, Chocolate Bitters and garnished with a Sweet Potato Chip).

JOURNEY 360: Currently open 20 PPL: A ticketed event that begins on a Zeppelin tethered to the Empire State Building circa 2022. Guests will sit at a communal table with floor-to-ceiling and tabletop 360 projection mapping. Travel to dramatic settings for each course, from a fantastic waterfall in the Rain Forest to the side of a volcano to an underwater shipwreck. The magnificent five-course prix fixe meal will end with a futuristic, otherworldly dessert set in an out-of-this-world location. JOURNEY Salon Currently open A non-ticketed environment featuring a unique bar with an elevated bar menu. ABOUT JOURNEY

Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire
