All brewing water is passed through a state-of-the-art Reverse Osmosis water treatment filtration system to remove impurities. This is essential for crafting pure, flavorful, and high-quality beers.

HYDROPONIC FARMING

Eventually, our goal is to grow all hops using in-house hydroponic systems. This will allow us to experiment with new hop strains while reducing our water usage and carbon footprint.

On Mars, all food must be grown using hydroponic systems due to high levels of dangerous toxins in the Martian soil.

CARBON CAPTURE SYSTEMS

Long term, we plan to install systems on our tanks that can capture CO2 during the fermentation process. This CO2 could be used for other operations like canning and pressure transfers.

Budweiser Wants to Brew Beer on Mars. That’s Even Harder Than It Sounds

Cosmic quaff: We're still a long way from beer in space

I f you’re traveling to Mars, you’re going to have to bring a lot of essentials along — water, air, fuel, food. And, let’s be honest, you probably wouldn’t mind packing some beer too. A two-year journey — the minimum length of a Mars mission — is an awfully long time to go without one of our home planet’s signature pleasures.

Now, Anheuser-Busch InBev, the manufacturer of Budweiser, has announced that it wants to bring cosmic bar service a little closer to reality: On Dec. 4, the company plans to launch 20 barley seeds to space, aboard a SpaceX rocket making a cargo run to the International Space Station (ISS). Studying how barley — one of the basic ingredients in beer — germinates in microgravity will, the company hopes, teach scientists a lot about the practicality of building an extraterrestrial brewery.

“We want to be part of the collective dream to get to Mars,” said Budweiser vice president Ricardo Marques in an email to TIME. “While this may not be in the near future, we are starting that journey now so that when the dream of colonizing Mars becomes a reality, Budweiser will be there.”

Nice idea. But apart from inevitable issues concerning Mars rovers with designated drivers and who exactly is going to check your ID when you’re 100 million miles from home, Budweiser faces an even bigger question: Is beer brewing even possible in space? The answer: Maybe, but it wouldn’t be easy.

Start with that first step Budweiser is investigating: the business of growing the barley. In the U.S. alone, farmers harvest about 2.5 million acres of barley per year. The majority of that is used for animal feed, but about 45% of it is converted to malt, most of which is used in beer. Even the thirstiest American astronauts don’t need quite so much on tap, so start with something modest — say a 20-liter batch. That’s about 42 pints, which should get a crew of five through at least two or three Friday nights. But even that won’t be easy to make in space.

“If you want to make 20-liters of beer on Earth you’re going to need 100 to 200 square feet of land to grow the barley,” wrote Tristan Stephenson , author of The Curious Bartender series, in an email to TIME. “No doubt they would use hydroponics and probably be a bit more efficient in terms of rate of growth, but that’s a fair bit of valuable space on a space station…just for some beer.”

Still, let’s assume you’re on the station, you’ve grown the crops, and now it’s time to brew your first batch. To start with, the barley grains will have to go through the malting process, which means soaking them in water for two or three days, allowing them to germinate partway and then effectively killing them with heat. For that you need specialized equipment, which has to be carried to space and stored onboard. Every pound of orbital cargo can currently cost about $10,000, according to NASA , though competition from private industry is driving the price down. Still, shipping costs to space are never going to be cheap and it’s hard to justify any beer that winds up costing a couple hundred bucks a swallow.

The brewing process itself would present an entirely different set of problems — most involving gravity. On Earth, Stephenson says, “Brewers measure fermentation progress by assessing the ‘gravity’ (density) of the beer. The measurement is taken using a floating hydrometer. You’re not going to be doing that in space.”

The carbonation in the beer would be all wrong too, making the overall drink both unsightly and too frothy. “The bubbles won’t rise in zero-g,” says Stephenson. “Instead they’ll flocculate together into frogspawn style clumps.”

Dispersed or froggy, once the bubbles go down your gullet, they do your body no favors in space. The burp you emit after a beer on Earth seems like a bad thing, but only compared to the alternative — which happens a lot in zero-g, as gasses don’t rise, but instead find their way deeper into your digestive tract.

The type of beer you could make in space is limited and pretty much excludes Lagers — or cold-fermented beer. “Lager takes longer to make compared to most beers, because the yeast works at a lower temperature,” says Stephenson. “This is also the reason for the notable clarity of lager: longer fermentation means more yeast falls out of the solution, resulting in a clearer, cleaner looking beer. Emphasis on ‘falls’ — and stuff doesn’t fall in space.”

Finally, if Budweiser’s stated goal is to grow beer crops on Mars, they’re going about the experiment all wrong. Germinating your seeds in what is effectively the zero-g environment of the ISS is very different from germinating them on Mars, where the gravity is 40% that of Earth’s — weak by our standards, but still considerable for a growing plant. Budweiser and its partners acknowledge this possibility and argue that the very purpose of the experiment is to try to address the problem.

“Gravity as a continuum is an active area of research,” says Michael Roberts, deputy chief scientist of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), which is collaborating with Budweiser on the space station study. “We do not yet know if plants or any living organisms experience a threshold effect where fractions of 1-g have the same effects as microgravity.”

That’s just one of a whole lot of known unknowns, and there’s no certainty they’ll ever be sorted out. Still, there’s no denying that an extraterrestrial brewery has appeal. Budweiser may be in the business of making and marketing beer, but it’s hard to argue with company vice president Marques when he asks, “How good will life on Mars be if you can’t enjoy a cold beer?” The answer: less good than it ought to be. If we have the wherewithal to get ourselves to Mars one day, here’s hoping we’ll also figure out a way to toast our own arrival.

It’s a well-known fact that water is in short supply outside of Earth . And while that makes life all but impossible on other planets, worst of all it means that you can’t get a good beer anywhere else in the known universe.

But that might change. Last week, at the SXSW Interactive Festival, Budweiser  announced the “Bud On Mars” initiative.

The “King of Beers” brand will partner with the International Space Station (ISS) and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) to conduct experiments on how to take and brew beer in space and on Mars.

The announcement included a panel discussion with former astronaut Clayton Anderson and de-facto Mars expert Kate Mara, who co-starred in the 2015 movie “The Martian.”

Why have beer on Mars? Because it’ll keep people from going crazy.

“A successful mission will include many key components, including the need to provide crew members with commodities that remind them of home,” Anderson said. And he should know; Anderson completed two space missions, including a 152-day stint aboard the ISS.

Valerie Toothman, vice president of marketing innovation for Anheuser-Busch, acknowledged that manned travel to Mars is still many years away. The brand also has work to do before it’s ready to send home-brew kits 39 million miles through space.

“We’ve already started to construct a set of experiments to take our barley malt up to the space station to understand what kind of effect those low Earth orbit conditions puts on [it],” she said.

Not only that, but with current technology any trip to Mars would take years. And with limited supplies, that means understanding how to brew beer on another planet, not just in space.

Problems With Beer In Space

There are a number of issues with having beer in space (and probably Mars, but nobody’s been there yet).

On top of that, scientists still haven’t figured out how to have carbonated beverages in zero-gravity. As Anderson noted, “As soon as the lid is popped on Earth, you let it ‘fizz’ and you enjoy. In space, it ‘pops,’ and then maybe you’d need to clean everything.”

Still, the future of space travel looks bubbly. Budweiser and CASIS are moving forward with experiments and the beer brand is serious about being the first brew swilled by Martian-auts.

“We know that travel to Mars might still be a decade or two away,” Toothman said. “But this is the first step in the journey in a long-term commitment by [Anheuser Busch] to make sure that when we get there and we achieve that American dream, Budweiser is the beer people will be toasting with and will be enjoying there on Mars.”

NASA has been exploring Mars since the 1960s, pushing the frontier of innovation to get to the red planet and discover its secrets. This new technology has often found other uses here on Earth as well. A few highlights below – click the links to learn more about each: 

Paving the Way for Hospital Robots  Mars rovers navigate alien terrain where they gather and analyze samples with minimal human help. Using the same skills, hospital robots can now do everything from delivering medications to ushering patients to appointments. 

Guiding Cars with Tech for Mars   Autonomous navigation on Mars requires “brains” made up of advanced neural networks and deep learning algorithms. But if the rovers can manage on another planet, putting the same tech in cars, drones, and toys here on Earth is a no-brainer. 

Generating Wind Power   Solar power is great until a Martian dust storm blacks it out. But there’s another option for those blustery days: wind power. NASA helped design a low-maintenance wind turbine that can function in extreme conditions – on Mars or on Earth. 

Ambulating Rugged Robots   In the 1990s, NASA came up with a way to combine stereo cameras and a 3D laser imager to help a rover see its surroundings. Today that system and other advances for Mars exploration help robots navigate terrain too dangerous for humans to go. 

Detecting Methane Leaks  To search for life on Mars, we look for clues – like methane, which is usually created by microbes. But tools to sniff out tiny traces of methane on Mars now help detect leaks in natural gas pipelines on Earth. 

Greening Up Drilling   How do you fuel a trip home from Mars? A system to break apart gases like carbon dioxide into its components could fill the tank. A similar system used on methane released from oil wells turns the greenhouse gas into energy. 

Suturing with Mars-Grade Materials   Bringing home a Martian sample requires a perfectly sealed container to prevent contamination. A soft, flexible, strong material keeps Martian dust from interfering with the seal and is great for heart surgery sutures and stents. 

Making Clean Power   A human mission to Mars will require creative use of resources. A fuel cell that uses solar power to split water into oxygen for breathing and hydrogen for fuel is ideal. Technology based on that system now creates clean energy on Earth. 

Carbonating Beer  Technology created to fuel a journey home from Mars (now helping recycle methane from oil drilling) also found another use on Earth: capturing carbon dioxide emitted by fermenting hops and using it to put the bubbles in beer.

The cruise phase begins after the spacecraft separates from the rocket, soon after launch. The spacecraft departs Earth at a speed of about 24,600 mph (about 39,600 kph). The trip to Mars will take about seven months and about 300 million miles (480 million kilometers). During that journey, engineers have several opportunities to adjust the spacecraft’s flight path, to make sure its speed and direction are best for arrival at Jezero Crater on Mars. The first tweak to the spacecraft’s flight path happens about 15 days after launch.

  • Checking spacecraft health and maintenance
  • Monitoring and calibrating the spacecraft and its onboard subsystems and instruments
  • Performing attitude correction turns (slight spins to keep the antenna pointed toward Earth for communications, and to keep the solar panels pointed toward the Sun for power)
  • Conducting navigation activities, such as trajectory correction maneuvers, to determine and correct the flight path and train navigators before atmospheric entry. The last three correction maneuvers are scheduled during approach.
  • Preparing for entry, descent, and landing (EDL) and surface operations , a process which includes tests of communications, including the communications to be used during EDL.

The mission is timed for launch when Earth and Mars are in good positions relative to each other for landing on Mars. That is, it takes less power to travel to Mars at this time, compared to other times when Earth and Mars are in different positions in their orbits. As Earth and Mars orbit the Sun at different speeds and distances, once about every 26 months, they are aligned in a way that allows the most energy-efficient trip to Mars.
