Adventures in Fantasy Literature

Vintage treasures: journeys of the catechist by alan dean foster, wednesday, april 13, 2016 john oneill comments 10 comments.

I don’t think Alan Dean Foster gets the respect he deserves. He’s an enormously gifted and prolific author who’s produced some of the most ambitious and successful series on the market, including the seventeen novels in the Pip & Flinx series (which my son read and re-read, awaiting each new volume anxiously), the 13 books of the Humanx Commonwealth , beginning with Nor Crystal Tears (1982), the 8 volumes of the Spellsinger  saga, and many others. (My personal favorite Alan Dean Foster novel is probably Splinter of the Mind’s Eye (1978), one of his three Star Wars novels, but don’t hold that against me.)

For those of you looking for something maybe a little less ambitious and a little more manageable, Foster has also written several fine standalone trilogies, including Icerigger , The Founding of the Commonwealth , The Damned , and The Tipping Point . Perhaps his most highly regarded fantasy trilogy is Journeys of the Catechist , comprised of three novels published between 1998-2000 by Warner Aspect, all with covers by the great Keith Parkinson.

Carnivores of Light and Darkness (344 pages, $23 hardcover/$6.50 paperback, June 1998) Into the Thinking Kingdoms (376 pages, $23 hardcover/$6.50 paperback, April 1999) A Triumph of Souls (406 pages, $24.96 hardcover/$6.99 paperback, March 2000)

I was surprised and pleased to find a blurb on the back of my paperback editions from Todd Richmond at SF Site , who published a review of Into the Thinking Kingdoms  back in 1999. I don’t think I’ll ever really get over how cool it is to discover blurbs I published on popular SF and fantasy books.

I was the founder and editor at SF Site until 1998, when I left to start Black Gate . Todd’s got great taste, so let’s have a look at what he said.

Into the Thinking Kingdoms , sequel to Carnivores of Light and Darkness , picks up where the first book left off. Ehomba, a simple herdsman from a small village, has had an obligation placed upon him by a dying man. He must rescue the Visioness Themaryl, the dying man’s intended, from the evil Hymneth the Possessed. Here, Ehomba and his two companions, the swordsman Simna ibn Sind and the giant feline Ahlitah, continue on their journey. Unlike the Changing Lands in Carnivores of Light and Dark , the trio now travels across “civilized” lands. Their travels are no less adventurous, however. They must deal with a herd of insane horses, a valley of hostile flowers and a shepherd with a most unusual dog. When they reach the first of the many small kingdoms of the civilized lands, they are almost immediately arrested for the crime of improper contemplation. It seems that the kingdom of Tethspraih only allows thinking in alignment with the approved general mode of thought of Tethspraih (“Think like we tell you to think or else…”). The story follows the same pattern as Carnivores of Light and Darkness . The trio encounters a series of trials or problems as they travel. Each time Ehomba uses a special power or an item from his village to rescue them. He continually claims to be only a simple herdsman, to the disbelief of his comrades. Simna and Ahlitah are convinced they are travelling with a powerful sorcerer… So what’s the final verdict? There’s no doubt that Alan Dean Foster is a master storyteller. I finished Into the Thinking Kingdoms in a single sitting.

Of course, Warner boiled Todd’s thoughtful review down to two slender sentences for the blurb:

Foster is a master storyteller. I finished Into the Thinking Kingdoms in a single sitting.

That’s marketing for you.

Here’s a scan of the back covers of all three paperbacks, since I’m too lazy to type in the plot summaries (click for legible versions.)

All three books are currently out of print, but all are available in digital format from Aspect for $9.99 – $12.99 each. I bought all three print editions on eBay last month for $1.99, as part of a collection of Alan Dean Foster novels.

Funnily enough, ‘Splinter in the Mind’s Eye’ was the only Alan Dean Foster novel I read, around the time it came out. A guy in my art class in secondary school gave it to me, the deal being that I paint a copy of the cover in return (I had a largely undeserved reputation for being able to wield a brush) – I remember copying the cover a lot more clearly than I do the book’s actual content. It was the Ballantine cover, with Darth more or less in silhouette.* Luckily he didn’t want me to do the figures in the foreground – just Darth and the trees directly behind, so I don’t think I got gypped.

Thanks John,

I’m looking for something new, and this review has sold me 🙂

One of many authors I’ve meant to read more of but somehow never got around to it. That SW novel, I read and maybe another. This sound good, I may look for it. Thanks.

What a story! How did the painting turn out? Do you have a picture of it?

Glad to hear it. Hope you enjoy – drop by to less us know what you think (and how long it takes you to find copies!)

I really enjoyed Splinter of the Mind’s Eye , but that may be my Star Wars love showing. I’m also a fan of ADF’s short fiction… he has several paperback collections out, and they’re well worth a look.

Joe H.

I read so many of his books back in high school, always found on the paperback SF spinner at the public library.

Midworld is possibly my favorite, and might warrant a reread. Possibly followed by Philip Jose Farmer’s Dark is the Sun, for reasons I find difficult to articulate.

Actually the painting wasn’t bad, mainly because it was pretty simple. If he’d asked me to do the two figures in the foreground? Errrm…

I have no idea what he did with it. I got a lot of my SF books from him, as well as old back issues of 2000 AD (which had only launched the previous year). Funnily enough, I was recently reminded of another book he’d lent me when my brother posted me a link for an article about the physical impracticalities of Superman and Lois ever getting it on – ‘Man of Steel, Women of Kleenex’. The article dates from ’69, but was included in this anthology. It was called ‘SuperHeroes’ and came out in ’78

The author’s name – one Larry Niven – would have meant nothing to me at the time.

I read a lot of Alan Dean Foster and even if I have trouble remembering most of it, I really, really liked the Icerigger-books (especially the first).

SOLD! I must read CARNIVORES OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS. “…packed with flavorful incident.” How can you not love a quote like that on the back of a book? Add it to the must-read pile.

Journeys of the Catechist is a fantasy trilogy by Alan Dean Foster . It consists of Carnivores of Light and Darkness (1998), Into the Thinking Kingdoms (1999), and A Triumph of Souls (2000).

This series contains examples of:

  • Boring Return Journey : The journey to find Hymneth the Possessed and the Visioness Themaryl occupies most of the trilogy, with only about a quarter of the third book being spent in the overlord's kingdom. Then Ehomba takes Themaryl back to her kingdom from halfway through the second book, then back to the overlord because she'd fallen for him , then he goes all the way back to his own village. All without a description of the events.
  • Brainwashed : The Kingdom of Yellow has thought-reading birds, allowing people to find people thinking wrong and brainwash them. It is implied that they have done this successfully to most of the kingdom, although it all comes crashing down when they try it on the main characters.
  • Crazy-Prepared : Ehomba carries any number of magical and alchemical gifts in his backpack. Most of these are intended for use in other applications, but prove effective in whatever crazy-ass situation he's currently facing as well. In addition, his "sky-metal sword" usually has a hidden ability perfect for whatever foe he's fighting.
  • Getting Smilies Painted on Your Soul : The Kingdom of Yellow is a place of eternal happiness and laughter. Naturally, beings from outside the Kingdom of Yellow are not like that, so the people who live there "help" by using the merrygolds on them. This causes a person to laugh uncontrollably. It's described as "being fun for about a minute, then being hilarious agony." After a few minutes, you'll end up laughing yourself to death.
  • Godly Sidestep : Knucker the Knower, who knows everything when he's drunk, tells Ehomba the meaning of life in Into the Thinking Kingdoms . Ehomba is pleased with the answer, but since Knucker whispers the answer, the reader never finds out.
  • Humans Are Cthulhu : A story-within-a-story seen in Carnivores of Light and Darkness tells of two warring anthills contacting a man, probably to get him to help destroy the other mound. One group of ants sees this as a divine miracle.
  • I Gave My Word : Ehomba doesn't want to leave his home and family to go and rescue some woman he's never heard of from some man he's never heard of in some place he's never heard of, but he has an obligation and he's not going to shirk it. After working his way through three books worth of crazy adventures to find Visioness Themaryl and defeat Hymneth the Possessed, Ehomba discovers that in the meantime she's fallen in love with her captor. Being a man of his word, he insists on taking her back to her family, but promises that he'll grant her one request. So she asks to go back to the necromancer (which involves more crazy adventures, but all off screen this time) . The companions he picked up along the way all express their opinions that he's fallen well into Lawful Stupid territory.
  • Kill It with Water : Parodied. Faced with a living mass of desert sand called the Dunawake, Ehomba reaches into his backpack and comes out with a small vial of liquid, which he throws at the monster. When one of his companions asks what was in the vial, Ehomba says it was his supply of whater — not "water", " what-er ", a rare liquid that his tribe uses to purify water by separating it into its component parts. Applied to the Dunawake, the whater separates the monster into its component minerals, killing it in the process.
  • The Mirror Shows Your True Self : Ehomba, using a mirror to scare away some creatures that had been bombarding the party with giant pine cones. Afterward, each character looks into the mirror in turn. The normally jovial and exuberant Simna appears much more somber and depressed, the enormous cat Ahlitah appears as the height of feline majesty, and the recovering drunkard Knucker sees himself as he is when drinking. When Ehomba first looks into the mirror, the other three are momentarily blinded by the sun's reflection when they try to look. Looking again, the mirror is showing Ehomba exactly as he is. Only Ahlitah notices that the sun was in front of Ehomba, not behind him, and so couldn't have been the source of the light that the others saw in the mirror.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability : The eromakasi (eaters of light) can only be killed by eromakadi, because they are basically mist, and need to be sucked in. The most powerful mage in the world has two of them as bodyguards.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity : This turns out to be the case with Hunkapa Aub .
  • Oh, My Gods! : Simna has a very long list of deities upon which to call in any situation; all of their names starting with the letter "G". However, it's not inexhaustible: Simna: "By every god-damned god I've ever sworn by! What is going on here?! "
  • Panthera Awesome : Ahlitah, a hybrid of lion and cheetah, who possesses his father's strength (the lion), and his mother's speed. He basically serves as The Snark Knight throughout the series, and The Big Guy for the first book.
  • Unwanted Rescue : Played with. Ehomba promises a dying man that he will rescue the beautiful Visioness Themaryl, who has been kidnapped by the sorcerer/warlord Hymneth the Possessed, and return her to her home city. After many adventures, he and his companions storm Hymneth's fortress to discover that the Visoness has decided to stay, believing that her influence can make him less evil. Etjole proceeds to bring her home by force. Then, having fulfilled his promise, he immediately turns around and takes her right back to Hymneth .
  • In the first book, Ehomba encounters the living essence of Corruption. One character hits Corruption in the neck with his sword, which promptly rusts and rots away in seconds.
  • A similar being, called the Drounge, is encountered in the third book. Descriptions of its travels before encountering the heroes tell of mysterious plagues, withered crops, and epidemics. Even touching the thing rots away all the flesh on one character's hand.

Catholic movement in Italy dedicated to people ‘far from the Church’

Ricostruttori

By Emma Silvestri

Rome, Italy, Apr 28, 2024 / 06:00 am

Across Italy there are houses of prayer run by the Ricostruttori (Reconstructors) community, a Catholic movement dedicated to people who are far from the Church but attracted to spirituality, particularly Eastern meditation and Buddhist practices.

The Reconstructors was founded in 1978 by Jesuit Father Gian Vittorio Cappelletto.

“During the postconciliar period, the Church was faced with the need for new forms of evangelization and apostolate, to reach out to people who were drifting away,” Don Roberto Rondanina, priest and superior of the Ricostruttori, explained to CNA. “It was a time when Eastern meditation, Hinduism, Buddhism, the New Age ... were beginning to spread in Europe.”

“Father Cappelletto, who lived in Turin, sought to understand the meaning of this ‘flight to the East’ and felt the need to find new forms of spirituality that were more experiential, closer to mysticism, open to mystery, allowing to touch one’s own interiority,” Rondanina said.

To achieve this, Cappelletto drew some inspiration from Indian masters, recovering from their teachings forms of profound prayer with a Christian matrix, such as the famous “Jesus prayer” (“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner”).

“His encounter with the East was an opportunity to rediscover this vein, which had previously been confined to monasticism, particularly in the Orthodox Church, but which was not widely practiced here at the time,” Rondanina said.

The East that leads to Christ

Cappelletto then designed a meditation course for the public with some characteristics similar to Eastern forms of meditation.

“It wasn’t a lectio divina type of meditation; there was posture, breathing, silence, and it had a big impact in the ’80s and ’90s because it was something new,” the superior said.

According to Rondanina, who is the first successor to the founder, who died in 2009, Cappelletto’s “strong intuition” was to adopt technical disciplines from the East containing certain aspects of physical and psycho-physical attention and orient them “towards Christ and the Church.”

“Furthermore,” he told CNA, “Father Cappelletto has deepened an anthropological vision that is lacking in the East: the human person seen as a unique person who must be valued. Eastern schools tend to move towards an experience of the impersonal divine, where the divine in myself and in others is more essential than anything that defines the person. In the Western Christian matrix, on the other hand, each person makes his or her own choices, builds his or her own life and retains his or her uniqueness, expressed also in the dogma of the Resurrection.”

The Reconstructors today

The movement launched by Cappelletto spread by word of mouth throughout Italy, from Piedmont to Sicily. Today, it is recognized as a public association of the faithful, encompassing people from various backgrounds and vocations.

The community is made up of about 30 priests, a few laymen, and about 40 laywomen. In all, there are just under 70 consecrated people. The priests are incardinated in their dioceses, while the laypeople work outside — as bank officials, doctors, religious teachers, or employees of charitable organizations.

More than 200 associates have also joined the movement. They are not consecrated but participate in the charism of the community in some way. “But it is much bigger than that,” Rondanina said. “Many people frequent our houses; it’s difficult to quantify.”

The landscape has changed a lot since the early days.

“Before, there were hardly any non-baptized people. People knew the Church. Today, we find people who are far away but who haven’t moved away, simply because they’ve never been close.”

As in the past, the Reconstructors centers offer a methodical evangelization program, beginning with meditation, raising awareness of the sacred dimension, and then providing Catholic teaching.

The reconstruction of man

The name of the community — “Ricostruttori” — has a few different meanings.

“Our community is linked to the manual labor of reconstruction, as many of our out-of-town centers for retreats have been reconstructions,” Rondanina explained. “We began by restructuring an old building (cascinali) that had been used as housing for women working in the rice fields in the 1950s.”

This work of reconstruction also symbolizes the inner rebuilding of the person. For Rondanina, who teaches philosophy, personal reconstruction is an ongoing journey. Likewise, “to keep a youthful movement, and not close ourselves off in dogmatic forms, we must always be searching.”

Spiritual growth, the priest added, “happens when you move from the phase where you think you’ve found the magic wand to solve all your problems, the initial phase of youth where everything seems rosy, to a phase of crisis, where you take a step forward. The kingdom of God advances like this, with the ability to see our limits, to rebuild ourselves time after time, to understand where we went wrong, to remove the dross to get to the essential things.”
