Kasabian: AO Arena, Manchester – live review

Kasabian 2 © Michael Bond

As Kasabian stop off in Manchester on their tour of new album The Alchemist’s Euphoria, with Serge Pizzorno taking over the reigns the burning question is “so what would a Serge-fronted Kasabian sound like?”.  Guest reviewer Natalie Royale reports.

I can’t have been the only Kasabian fan prior to this gig at Manchester’s AO Arena with doubts as to what this performance would be like.  I have been a huge fan of the band since 2004 when they released their first, self-titled album, Kasabian; and when I’ve previously seen them live the band seemed to hinge itself on the chemistry that existed between (then) front man Tom Meighan and co-vocalist, songwriter and guitarist, Sergio (Serge) Pizzorno.

Whilst Serge’s role back then seemed to be to provide the songwriting talent and musical enquiry, Meighan was always the band’s connection to the crowd.  After the departure of Meighan in 2020, when he was convicted of assaulting his partner, a new frontman was required and there was only really ever one person in the running – step up to centre-stage Mr Pizzorno.

Kasabian 6 © Michael Bond

The band are touring their seventh studio album, The Alchemist’s Euphoria – their first with Pizzorno in the driver’s seat – and euphoria is undeniably the mood radiating from the sell-out crowd.  They open with Rocket Fuel – an industrial rave-like song with echoes of The Prodigy, the bassy thud that hits you in your stomach immediately getting the crowd bouncing along.  Pizzorno looks every inch the rock star – literally larger than life, with his 6’4” frame engulfed in a huge graffiti-covered puffer jacket, which unfortunately doesn’t last too long before it’s removed so he can carry on throwing himself energetically around the stage.

The band are fresh from the European leg of this tour and, although this Manchester show isn’t technically a homecoming gig for the Leicester rockers, you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise.  Pizzorno announces that “Manchester is where it’s f*&^ing at” and demands that we “sing our f^&*ing hearts out as loud as we can” – with the crowd only too happy to oblige.

Kasabian 3 © Michael Bond

Rocket Fuel is followed by three of their older, more anthemic tracks –  Club Foot, Ill Ray (The King) and Underdog, which all sound fresh and as loud and as large as the arena itself.  The whole crowd is bouncing, from the front barrier right to the back in the nosebleed seats.

CHEMICALS comes next with the melodic verse contrasting magnificently with the huge chorus.  Pizzorno’s energy is nothing short of infectious and this energy doesn’t fade all night, apart from one moment during the instrumental in TUE where, if you close your eyes, you could be forgiven for thinking you were at an early 1970s Pink Floyd concert, which provides a welcome moment to recover from all the dancing. They play Processed Beats for the first time since 2014 – and Serge dedicates the song to all the fans from ‘back in the day’ and thanks them for sticking around.  The crowd thank him right back as Pizzorno lowers the mic and lets the audience sing his chorus right back at him.

There is a clear mutual appreciation going on, Pizzorno spending a large portion of this gig applauding the crowd, hands raised above his head, with the audience roaring their gratitude right back at him.  The band even give an extra nod to the City’s musical heritage when they mix their 2004 hit Cutt Off (the first airing of this song since 2015) with Manchester legends The Stone Roses’ Waterfall, which goes down a storm with the crowd.

Kasabian 1 © Michael Bond

The new lineup is definitely more The Serge Show than the original Meighan-fronted Kasabian, but with a songwriter, producer and frontman like Serge, what’s not to love?  Their new songs blend effortlessly with the old classics, and you get a feeling Pizzorno is performing these older songs the way he always intended them to be performed.  Pizzorno (the musical and lyrical alchemist) is definitely euphoric in his new role.  What could have spelt the end for one of the UK’s most popular bands has resulted in a resounding comeback, and the band feel and sound stronger, tighter – and LOUDER – than ever –  I have never felt energy like it.

My advice?  If you get the chance to go and watch Kasabian on this tour – GO.  And be prepared to bounce.

Sergio Pizzorno of Kasabian performing in Glasgow.

Kasabian review – Serge Pizzorno ably steps up as frontman for new era

Academy, Glasgow The fuzzing dance-rockers return strongly after Tom Meighan’s departure, and unite the crowd in hollered vocals

L ast July, Tom Meighan was sacked as Kasabian’s singer the day before his conviction for assault against his partner, Vikki Ager. The Leicester electronic-rock band have shown no prospect of reconciliation to their former frontman of 23 years, nor at any point looked willing to let his transgressions knock them off their swagger, in part perhaps because Meighan’s obvious successor was always at hand.

At their first gig since 2018, a lean and charged greatest hits set that shakes the Glasgow Academy to its foundations, it’s Kasabian’s co-vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, producer and leader Sergio “Serge” Pizzorno who ascends to centre stage, with a certain air of destiny (the Music’s Rob Harvey joins as backing vocalist and guitarist). He still intermittently straps on a polka-dot Rickenbacker to hog the best riffs – the grizzled fuzztone opening run of Underdog, for instance. But mostly Pizzorno bounds free, mic and occasionally maracas in hand, with a practised air that suggests he might have been secretly rehearsing his moves in front of the mirror his whole life.

Straight from Zumba ... Kasabian.

Looking as if he’s arrived straight from Zumba class in cropped trousers, trainers, and baggy tee, Pizzorno launches his 6ft 4in frame into the air athletically for the cliff-edge drops of Bumblebee and Fast Fuse. Perhaps appropriately for the raver’s choice of rock band, he does a whole lot of dancing. During the clubby coda of Treat, Pizzorno shuffles on the spot with such abandon you’d feel only half-surprised if he threw himself on the floor and started windmilling. It’s questionable whether You’re in Love With a Psycho (“and there’s nothing you can do about it”) is a tasteful choice of song tonight, or any night. But the mass hysteria that Kasabian inspire goes far beyond the lyrical.

Fronting Kasabian is in some ways a nominal role when it’s the crowd who are their de facto voice for so much of the shows. Twice the band stand back to let the audience bellow the wordless refrain of LSF. Every last bit of Kasabian’s aggro-disco battle cry Fire is howled back at them, right down to the guitar melodies. Earth and vocal cords scorched, Pizzorno signs off only with praise and thanks to the fans, and not a word to the past.

Listen to Kasabian’s new anthemic single ‘Coming Back To Me Good’

The track is the latest to be shared from their album ‘Happenings’

Kasabian, 2024.

Kasabian have dropped ‘Coming Back To Me Good’ – the new summer-ready single from their forthcoming album. Check it out below.

  • READ MORE: Kasabian share ‘Call’ and tell us about new album ‘Happenings’: “It’s a well-executed bank heist”

Shared this morning (April 12), the new song marks the latest single that the Leicester-born rockers have shared from their upcoming album ‘Happenings’ .

Coming in at less than three minutes long, the track takes on the form of a short and sweet anthem, made to celebrate the summer with a burst of energy. “ Don’t give up, it’s not too late/ Get the feeling that you’re in a state/ The shock is coming over you/ And there’s nothing left for me to do/ Tell me something I don’t know ,” sings Sergio Pizzorno in the high energy opening lines, shortly before the explosive chorus kicks in.

The track follows on from the announcement of the album that Kasabian dropped back in February, which also saw them drop the mammoth track ‘Call’ , and is described by the band as being one of the most euphoric moments on the whole LP.

“It’s got that disco drive, but there’s also a moment of togetherness,” Pizzorno said of the single. “I imagine playing this when the sun’s out and your team is in the semi-final because it’s just so joyful.”

Check it out below.

The indie veterans first shared that their “psychedelic” new album of “big hitters” was on the way last year, when they announced details of a huge homecoming gig in the form of Summer Solstice II – a return to Victoria Park on Saturday July 6 after previously playing an outdoor gig there 10 years ago.

The LP will mark follow-up to 2022’s ‘The Alchemist’s Euphoria’ and their second since the exit of Tom Meighan . It is expected to feature 10 songs on the tracklist, although clocks in at just 26 minutes – “A minute shorter than the Ramones ’ debut,” Pizzorno explained.

It was written at his musician’s home studio, The Sergery, and features Mark Ralph ( Zara Larsson , Clean Bandit , Rudimental ) as co-producer.

“It’s very much an album that can only be made today. The influences are there, but it’s been made with the tools that I have around me now. It’s a really simple sentiment. Every section has to be a chorus and demand attention for the whole album. It’s relentless in its course,” the singer told NME in a recent interview .

Kasabian announce eighth album 'Happenings'

“I was always trying to make guitar music interesting. I don’t even know what you’d call our band. Are we a rock band? This time I was really into pop structure and making everything super clean and punchy – taking those kooky, crazy, weird sounds and making them hit like a modern record.”

He also added that fans can expect to see the tracks embedded into their live setlists, particularly due to their short, high-energy nature. “In between huge gigs we’d come home and ask, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a song like this?’ I’ve never really written on tour, so that was nice,” he explained. “That informed how the music was made. I really enjoyed that process and it made a lot of sense.”

As for upcoming gigs, as well as their return to Victoria Park, the band have also locked in a headline slot at this year’s Latitude festival. Visit here for remaining tickets to their upcoming live dates.

How to watch every memorable moment of the 2024 masters on tv or streaming live.

The most wonderful time of the golf season continues Sunday as the beauty of April surrounds Augusta National Golf Club. The 2024 Masters is a star-studded affair with a loaded field featuring the best golfers in the world. Scottie Scheffler entered as the favorite and remains that way, once again standing as the leader by a single stroke through 54 holes.

While five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods set a new record at Augusta National  by making the weekend in his 24th consecutive playing of the tournament, he completely ejected on Saturday by posting a 10-over 82, his worst score in a major championship round throughout his professional career.

Collin Morikawa posted one of the low rounds of Saturday to jump one stroke back of Scheffler. Max Homa held serve as he struggled around Augusta National but nevertheless posted a 73. Bryson DeChambeau fell off a bit, but an electric birdie on the last Saturday moved him to four shots back of Scheffler with 18 holes remaining. All will be seeking to earn as much 2024 Masters prize money as possible out of a $20 million purse .

Check out the Round 4 tee times at the Masters so you can see when each golfer is set to take the course, and follow Masters live leaderboard coverage throughout the final round on Sunday.
