The Mythology About Kheerganga

Kheerganga is an ancient pilgrimage site. The name “Kheerganga” comes from two words- “kheer”, which means a slurry sweet dish made of milk, and “Ganga” means a river of great importance.

It is said that from Satya-yuga till now, Shiva Parvati and Kartika have been living here. By the grace of Shiva and Parvati, Kheer (usually made by boiling milk) flowed here. That is why the place is called “Kheerganga”.

In order not to quarrel over the kheer, it was turned into hot water by the grace of Parasurama in Kaliyuga. Bathing in this water is virtuous. Also, the Kartikswamy cave is located 60 meters away from the hot spring. Now it is forbidden to enter the cave, but pilgrims can still visit there.

Kheerganga Trek Routes

There are three different trekking routes from Barshaini to Kheerganga, covering a 9 to 14 Km distance. Every route is best for their unique experience and adventure. So, let’s explore!

Route 1: Barishaini to Kheerganga via Nakthan

Nakthan is known for its 460 MW hydropower project and its surrounding scenic village. After passing the bridge on the Parvati river, take a left turn to reach the Nakthan village. Follow the Barsheni road to reach Rudranag which meets another trail from Kalga. The path is well-marked and easy to follow.

This route is easier to descend from Kheerganga than other ones. The distance from Kheerganga is the shortest on this route, usually taking 3-4 hours to complete. If you are an experienced trekker, it will be the best option. The famous Pin Parvati trek starts at Kheerganga, and most trekkers prefer this route to save time.

Route 2: Barishaini to Kheerganga via Tosh

This trek route connects Barshaini to Kheerganga via Tosh. This small village is surrounded by mountains and the Tosh river (nallah), which meets the Parvati river near Pulga village. This picturesque village is a perfect place to visit for trekkers and hikers. The only disadvantage is that this trek route adds an additional 2.5 Km to the course mentioned above.

Route 3: Barishaini to Kheerganga via Kalga

Trekking to Kheerganga via Kalga village is most scenic in dense forests, waterfalls, and eye-soothing greeneries. Watching the dance of light through the shadow of giant trees is mesmerizing. You won’t get such a beautiful form of nature in any of the previous trek routes. If you love photography, trekking to Kheerganga via Kalga won’t disappoint you. This is the best trek route to Kheerganga.

Kheerganga waterfall

Previously, this 10 Km long route was lesser known to trekkers, and there are reports of people missing in the dense forest. Presently, it is getting popular, and you can follow the trail easily. However, hiring a guide from Kalga is highly recommended as there are some difficult bridges on waterfalls and steep areas where beginners might need an expert hand.

Kheerganga Trek Itinerary

The Kheerganga trek can be covered in two days with one night stay at the camping site. However, if you are travelling from Manali or Delhi to Kasol, it can be exhausting to trek on the same day. For this reason, staying at Kalga or Tosh for the night and starting trekking the next morning is advisable. In this way, you will be refreshed and able to enjoy the adventure more. So, it will be best to plan a 3-day-2-night itinerary unless you plan to complete it in 2 days.

Kheerganga

Best Time For Kheerganga Trekking

Anyone can trek to Kheerganga throughout the year, as Parvati valley offers unique beauty in different seasons. Summer (March to June) is the most preferable time for Kheerganga trekking as the trekkers will get sunny yet comfortable weather (Avg. Temperature: 16°C 20°C) with minimum possibility of rainfall. However, accommodation, food, and transport rates are the highest at this time.

On the other hand, the trekking trail and Kheerganga get covered with thick snow during the winter (October to February) . The temperature drops (Temperature: -11°C to 12°C), and the path becomes slippery and unpredictable. Unless you are an experienced trekker, winter is less preferable than summer to trek to Kheerganga from Kasol.

Monsoon (July to September) is an adventurous season to trek to Kheerganga. At this time, nature gets soaked with raindrops (Avg. rainfall in monsoon: 1000 mm) and becomes greener and more soothing. However, the path becomes slippery, and many waterfalls start flowing over the trail, making the trekking difficult.

Trekkers trekking to Kheerganga in monsoon wearing raincoats

Considering all the seasons, summer, especially the months of April, May, and June, is the best time to visit Kheerganga . During these months, you will get clear weather and comfortable temperature with the least rainfall. The trail is relatively dry, and you can enjoy the spectacular view during your trek. After reaching Kheerganga, the breathtaking view of the Himalayas would surely stun you.

Kheerganga trekking in summer is highly recommended for beginner trekkers as the journey would be easier for them. However, if you are a reasonably experienced trekker and have not got the fun of trekking in rain or snow previously, winter and monsoon will be ideal for you.

Where To Stay At Kheerganga?

There are plenty of options to stay in Kheerganga. However, do not expect hotel-like facilities as all the accommodations are inside camping tents. There is a common dormitory stay option; however, if you have family or friends, you may like to book private accommodation inside a tent for 2, 4, or 6 persons. Depending on the size of the tents, all the accommodations are priced in the range of ₹500-₹1500 in different seasons. There is also a Dharamshala or ashram where you can get cheaper stay options.

Kheerganga camping

Sunshine Himalayan Camp, Kheerganga Hike Camps, Woodland Camp, and Om Shanti Camps are some of the famous campsites of Kheerganga. All these camping sites have the basic facilities of a warm blanket, waterproof tent, shared toilets, drinking water, etc. They also serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the designated dining area. The tents are comfortable for a cold night but do not expect much cleanliness in the common toilet facilities as we have experienced.

What To Eat At Kheerganga?

Every food item is overpriced in Kheerganga. This is because the sellers have to carry them on the entire high-altitude trekking route. For the same reasons, you will not get rich food items like fried rice, biryani, or any non-veg food items. Every camp provides rice, roti/paratha, dal, mixed veg, rajma, and occasionally paneer.

You will also get namkeen, biscuits, Maggi noodles, tea, coffee, cold drinks, and juice from the stalls and campsites nearby. There are a few cafés around with limited facilities. So, it is wise to carry some food for Kheerganga.

  • Photography And Videography

Kheerganga is a very photogenic place. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense forests, it is a perfect trekking destination for beginners. Located at an altitude of 2956 meters, Kheerganga is also free from air pollution and dust.

For this reason, the visibility of the night sky of Kheerganga is high. You can easily watch the stars, planets, and galaxies with your bare eyes. Using a good quality camera with suitable lenses would be very beneficial in capturing the starry night sky like it did to us during our trip.

If you like the Kheerganga trek for its short duration and easy difficulty, you will also like trekking to Triund and Thachi Valley in Himachal Pradesh, Sandakphu near Singalila National Park, West Bengal, and the double-decker living root bridge in Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya.

Things To Carry In Kheerganga Trek

  • Waterproof Trekking Shoe : A waterproof trekking shoe is an essential item for Kheerganga trekking. As there are many waterfalls, streams, and muddy trails, ordinary shoes will get wet and make your journey uncomfortable. Choose the best trekking shoe with high comfortability, breathability, and water resistance for a trouble-free trek.
  • Umbrella/ Raincoat : Carrying an umbrella and/or raincoat is a must for Kheerganga trekking because rainfall is very uncertain throughout the year. If you get wet, you may catch a cold as the temperature is much lower at Kheerganga.
  • Backpack With Rain Cover : For the same reason as abrupt rainfall, you must carry a trekking backpack with rain cover. You can use a small backpack (daypack) with minimum essential items or a rucksack with a higher capacity. But do not load the backpack heavily. Use the best quality rucksack with water-resistant materials and a rain cover for Kheerganga trekking.
  • LED Torch With Extra Batteries: Carrying an LED torch or flashlight with additional batteries would be very beneficial for the Kheerganga trek. Electricity is available only at the starting points (Kasol/ Barshaini/ Kalga /Tosh) and endpoints (Kheerganga). So, an LED torch can be your saviour if it gets dark. You can use the torchlight from your mobile phone, but carrying a torch would be safer and more helpful.
  • Toiletries: This is another essential item for trekking to Kheerganga. You should carry soap paper, toilet seat sanitiser, and wipes as the toilet facilities are not impressive.
  • Warm Clothes: While you can comfortably trek wearing a simple T-shirt and trousers, you will need warm apparel like a trekking jacket and woollen shocks once reaching Kheerganga. The temperature is quite cold up there, so it is always better to carry warm clothes.
  • Miscellaneous Items: Apart from the above items, you should also carry mosquito and insect repellants, binoculars, a walking stick/ trekking pole, a cap, sunglass, a towel, extra clothes for bathing, a first aid kit, medicines, photo ID proof, a water bottle and reusable plastic bag. Small Group Size

Our batch sizes are capped at 15 for smaller treks with the trek leader and trekker ratio of 1:8. This ratio, in our years of experience, has proven to deliver the best trekking experience for individuals as well as groups. Capping the size of the group ensures individual attention to each trekker so that no signs of distress or need during the trek go unnoticed. It also helps to form a more cohesive cohort with better group energy which helps define the rhythm and pace of days on the trek. As you go higher up on the BRS scale, since the stakes are higher, expeditions have an even smaller group size with the ratio of expedition leader to climber set at 1:2.

Treks around Kasol

13 Treks around Kasol: From Beginners to Expert Level

Not long ago Kasol was just another quaint little hamlet tucked away deep in Himachal Pradesh that no one knew about. Recently it burst onto the tourist map due to two main reasons, one being the easy availability of high-quality hashish ( Possession and consumption of Hashish are illegal in India,  you can be even arrested if you happen to have it ), and the second due to beautiful hiking and trekking trails all around Kasol.

If you are travelling to Kasol for the first time, I would definitely suggest you go to one of the treks on Kasol. No matter how long you plan to spend on Kasol, you can definitely find a trek into your itinerary. If you are travelling to Kasol or Parvati valley, in general, for the first time, you may find my Itinerary helpful. In this blog, I have shared 2, 4 and 6-day Itinerary for Kasol .

Here are some of the best treks around Kasol that I would suggest to first-time visitors in the region:

6 Super Easy & Short treks around Kasol for the Beginners

There is no denying the fact that some of the most beautiful treks in India are in Himachal Pradesh. Whether it is Triund trek, which is popular amongst beginners or the Pin Parvati Pass trek, one of the most challenging in the Himachal, there is no dearth of trekking routes for an adventurer.

If you are new to trekking or hiking in the Himalayas, there is no better place to start than Kasol. Kasol has some of the easiest and beginner-friendly treks in Himachal.

Trust me, even if you haven’t hiked at all your life, you can surely totally complete these treks:

1. Trek to the ‘Infamous,’ Malana village

Malana trek is one of the most popular as well as one of the shortest treks around Kasol. It just takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the infamous Malana village from Malana gate.

The village is a world of its own. Some of the weird rules about this village will leave you confused .  The residents of Malana claim to be descendants of the Soldier of Alexander the Great. You cannot touch anything in the village, nor you can touch its residents, breaking this rule would cost you a hefty fine of 3000 INR. The main deity of the Jamlu Devta who is the supreme of the village and no decision can be taken without his permission.

To reach the Malana gate you have to first reach Jari from Kasol. From Jari private cabs take you towards Malana gate and then you can start the Malana trek.

The trail is well marked, so trekking from Kasol to Malana shouldn’t be a problem even if you are solo. The only real problem is during winters when there is snow on the trail, and it becomes slippery so only attempt this if you are confident enough with proper winter boots, else it is always better to take a guide with you. I bought these incredibly low priced snow hiking boots for my winter expedition and was really surprised by their quality and durability.

kasol to malana trek

2. Possibly the easiest: Kasol to Chalal trek

This is one of the easy treks in Kasol. I wouldn’t even call it to trek as it just a short hike to the less crowded village of Chalal and is one of easiest trekking route in Kasol.

It takes around 30-45 minutes to reach this beautiful hamlet and is mostly a level walk so there are no ascents or descents.

Hence this short hike can be undertaken by anybody. To reach Chalal you need to get to the Kasol market area from there you’ll see Panj tara café which is where the trail to Chalal. Once you move a little further away, you’ll be able to see Chalal bridge.

Kasol is swarming with travellers mostly during the summer months when people rush to the hills to escape the brutal heat. So, if you are someone who doesn’t like too much crowd,  Kasol to Chalal trek can be your best bet to escape the crowd and seek some solitude. Chalal is one of the best places for camping and trekking in Kasol as there many operators which provide which camping options.

3. Trek to the extremely picturesque Kalga Village

This is one of the most beautiful villages of Parvati valley which is starting to become popular these days because of the extremely picturesque landscapes it offers. One of the best things about this village is that not a lot of people visit this village despite its growing popularity which is hard to find in Parvati valley these days.

The trail is well-marked one and it just takes around 30-45 minutes to reach this village from Barshaini bridge.

The hike to Kalga village is a bit uphill but is not that difficult. From Kalga you can go to the villages of Pulga and Tulga . Usually, the villages of Kalga-Pulga-Tulga are always associated together as they are very near to each other. Well-marked trails exist to the villages of Pulga and Tulga.

Kalga route also acts as an alternative route to Kheerganga. The route is a bit longer than the traditional route of via Nakthan village but the trail from Kalga is said to be more picturesque

kasol to kalga trek

4. Trek to the last motorable village Tosh

Tosh village is also the last motorable village in the Parvati Valley. Surrounded by lush green mountains with pine, deodar, oak trees, it offers a magnificent view of these mountains. I backpacked to Tosh Village in winters and was completely awestruck by the winter landscapes around it. You can read my complete backpacking guide to Tosh in this blog .

In order to trek to Tosh from Kasol, you first need to read Barshaini. Local buses are available every hour which will take you to Barshaini from Kasol. Once you reach Barshaini you can just hike on the motorable road from Barshaini to Tosh which is just 3kms.

From Tosh you can take several short treks such as Kutla trek and Buddhaban trek

kasol to tosh trek

5. Trek to Kutla Village for the views

Kutla is a small hamlet near to Tosh. It offers an excellent view of the snow-clad mountains and is a must-do trek around Kasol. It is just 2 hours away from Tosh village.

The trail is well marked so if anyone wants to do it solo then it shouldn’t be a problem. Also, there are a lot of people on the trail during the season months so chances of losing your way are slim. But it is better to ask locals in case of any confusion.

During winters though, the trail remains buried in deep snow so reaching Kutla can be a problem.

If you are going to attempt this during winters, then make sure you get the proper gear to do it and hire a guide as the difficulty increase quite a bit when there is a lot of snow on the trail.

kasol to kutla trek'

6. Trek a little further to Buddhaban Campsite

Buddhaban is only about half an hour trek from Kutla village. Buddhaban serves as the base for many other treks such as Animal Pass Trek, Spiti trek, etc.

The trail from Kuta to Buddhaban is a little steep for about a kilometre. If you are trekking to Kutla, this place can be covered easily.

Challenge Yourself with these 4 Moderate Level Treks Around Kasol

If you are feeling a little adventurous and are reasonably fit, I would suggest that you go a little further and challenge yourself to the moderate level treks.

These are the Treks I would definitely suggest:

1. Trek to the lesser-known Rasol

Rasol village is tucked away deep in the Parvati valley. It is one of the villages in the higher reaches of Parvati valley and can be only reached by foot . Since it requires an uphill climb of a few hours to reach this village is not frequented by a huge number of people and remains one of the lesser-explored villages of the valley.

Kasol to Rasol trek takes around 4-5 hours to complete with a strenuous uphill climb required in the latter part of the Trek.

Beginners may have a hard time on this trek, but since it is not very far off from Kasol beginners can attempt and gain vital experience through this trek.

Though one can come back on the same day from this trek If you can start early from Kasol, I would advise against it as you would not be able to enjoy fully and would have to rush back in order to reach Kasol back before dark. So, reach the village chill and enjoy the views around and only start to descend on the next day.

2. Take the unexplored Grahan Trek

Grahan village is another of those unexplored gems in the Parvati valley as it is frequented by very few travellers . One of the main reasons being that it can be only reached on foot. Located at an altitude of 2350 m offers an excellent view of the mountains and Pine forests in the backdrop.

This is one of the most beautiful treks in Kasol with the initial part of the running along the Grahan Nallah and later part of the trail involves arduous uphill climb through the forest to reach the Grahan village. It is around 10 km from Kasol and takes around 4-5 hours to complete .

Similar to Rasol trek, Grahan trek is also not very far off from Kasol and can be great for beginners looking to get into trekking. Also spending a night at Grahan is advisable, otherwise, you would have to rush back to Kasol without being able to explore much. Grahan also acts as a base to Sar pass trek .

kasol to grahan trek

3.  Trek to the Rudranag Temple and Waterfall

Rudranag lies on the famous trek trail of Kheerganga. You can climb up to the Rudanag temple from Pulga. There is also a beautiful waterfall at this site.

The trek trail to Rudranag is around 6 km from Barshaini. A lot of travellers pitch a tent at Rudraanag campsite before trekking further to Kheerganga.

kasol to rudranag trek

4. Kheerganga Trek the star of Parvati Valley

Kheerganga nestled at around 10,000 ft is one most famous and the beginner-friendly treks around Kasol and in general Himachal. Kasol to Kheerganga trek is one of the most popular things to do in Parvati valley and can be a perfect weekend getaway . Kheerganga is famous for its hot water spring.

The trail passes through beautiful deodar forests. You’ll be able to witness a beautiful waterfall en route Kheerganga.

It is around 12 -15 km from Barshaini which is the start point of the trek and can take anywhere between 6-8 hours depending on the fitness and speed of the person

Though this is one of the easier treks in the Himachal, I have still included this in an easy to moderate category as first-timers may find it difficult. But that being said, this is perfect for beginners who are looking to get into trekking in the Himalayas. As far as seasoned trekkers are concerned, they shouldn’t have a problem dealing with this one.

The trail to Kheerganga is marked one, so making your way to the top solo should not be that difficult and there are many people on the trail during most times of the year as this is one of the most popular treks around Kasol.

The trail is accessible throughout the year except for the winter months of January, February, March. Once it starts to snow heavily the latter part of Kasol to Kheerganga trek remains buried in deep snow and the difficulty level of the trek increases exponentially. So, If you are adventurous enough and want to attempt the trek in winters, then I would highly recommend having a guide along with you, and proper winter gear is mandatory that goes without saying.

3 Multi-day treks around Kasol for Pro’s

If you are a pro, Kasol has something to offer for you as well. If you want to pursue any of such treks, make sure that you are well-experienced and have done some Himalayan treks in the past

There are many multi-day treks around Kasol, among which my favourite ones are:

1. Trek to Mantalai Lake, the source of River Parvati

This trek takes you to the source of the sacred river Parvati. Mantalai lake, which is fed by the Mantalai Glacier. The lake is located at an elevation 4100 m and is one of the more difficult treks in the valley. Pin-Parvati pass trek and Mantalai lake trek follows the same route until the Mantalai lake from where the trails for Pin-Parvati pass go further towards Spiti side.

Again, this is a difficult trek, so it requires decent fitness when terrain and altitude are challenging. Even for seasoned trekkers, this can be a challenging trek to complete. Beginners can give it try but as it is a difficult trek.

The route you would take for this trek is as follows:

The trails to lake remain buried in deep snow once it starts to snow in the heavily in high-altitude areas after October and hence, there is only a small window of April-October to attempt this trek.

2. Pin Parvati Pass Trek, the Ultimate test your trekking skills

Pin Parvati pass trek is one of the most challenging non-technical treks in our country. The trek starts in Parvati valley and ends in pin valley national park in Spiti.

The distance of this trek is around 100 km which involves crossing the might Pin-Parvati pass which has an elevation of around 5319 m over the course of several days. This trek takes around 9 days to complete.

To attempt this trek, one has to be extremely fit as it requires to cross a pass which is over 5000m which is very difficult. A professional guide along with the porters is a must in order to complete this arduous multi-day trek. The is one of the most difficult treks in the country and according to me should only be attempted if you are insanely fit and have decent experience in crossing high-altitude passes above 4000m.

The trails and landscapes of this trek will definitely leave you awestruck. During the initial part of the trek you are trekking through lush green deodar forests, while in the latter stages you experience the barren, but surreal landscapes of Spiti valley which is a cold desert.

One of the highlights of the trek is Mantalai lake which is the source of the river Parvati.

You would take the following route to reach Mudh village in Pin valley

A professional guide and porters are mandatory if you wish to attempt this one. These days there a lot of options in terms whom you want to trek with. There are famous trekking companies which operate a lot of treks in the Himalayas. There are many local guides as well who are running this trek.

3. Sar Pass trek

This is one of the more popular long treks around Kasol. Sar in local language means lake. The pass is located at an altitude of 4280m and while crossing the pass you happen to pass through a small lake hence the name Sar Pass trek.

The initial part of the trek involves traversing through dense Pine and Deodar forests as you reach Grahan village. From the Grahan village, the trail starts becoming rocking and very steep till the Sar pass. The climb to the pass offers an excellent view of the peaks and the Tosh valley. Once you cross the pass you have to descend to the campsite of Biskeri thach. It offers surreal views of the snow-clad mountains and pine forests.

The is a moderate level trek and you need to have high fitness levels if you are going to attempt this one. It takes around 4-5 days to complete this trek. Beginners with decent fitness can attempt this trek, while seasoned trekkers will love it as there are enough challenging moments that will keep them engaged. You will need a professional guide or trekking company to complete this trek.

Since this a high altitude trek the trails are navigable from May to October. The trails are buried in deep in snow in winters and hence the trek is not possible during winters months.

What to take on your Treks around Kasol?

So, if you are doing any one of the treks or hikes to the villages then you can pretty much get away with your regular things which you would take for a normal trip. But in case, you are doing one of the multi-day treks then you need to be prepared with certain things.

In this section, I will be sharing with you things to take on your tres around Kasol. I am also suggesting a few things that I have personally used in my treks.

3 Must-Have Things for short hikes or treks to the villages

If you are planning to go for short easy and moderate hikes, there are not many things that you would need. However, I would suggest you carry these things for sure.

  • Trekking Shoes – The only thing which is a must are a good pair of trekking shoes that too only for treks like Grahan, Rasol, Kheerganga, Kutla. Since my recent trips have been in winters, I bought these hiking boots and believe me, they have really worked well . You can get away with normal sport shoes or even sandals for Chalal trek.
  • Raincoat – Another thing that might come in handy is raincoat or Poncho as it can rain at any point of time in the mountains especially if you are doing the trek in monsoon. I use a Quechua raincoat, it’s reasonably priced and very convenient to carry .
  • Winter Gear- Now if you are attempting the aforementioned treks in winters except Chalal chances are that there might be a lot of snow on the trails which increases difficulty drastically. Therefore, you need proper winter gear and maybe a guide as well. A good spot I would suggest to buy all your hiking gear is Decathlon. You can find all the gear you need for trekking at very affordable prices.

12 Absolute Essentials for Multi-day Treks around Kasol

The needs for multi-day treks are different. You need more sophisticated gear for such treks. Here are the 12 things that are a must-have for multi-day treks.

  • Rucksack above 55 litres
  • 3-4 to warm layers including layered, padded jackets
  • 2-3 cotton trek Pants (Jeans and denim is a big no for the Multi-day treks)
  • Good trekking shoes
  • Waterproof hand gloves
  • Water bottle
  • Basic medicines and your own prescription medicines (if any)

Don’t do these 4 Dangerous things When Trekking in Parvati Valley

While visiting Parvati Valley is the complete joy for the heart and the soul, not everything is as easy as it sounds. If you are trekking in the mountains for the first time, NEVER do these 4 things:

Is a guide really necessary for trekking and hiking around Kasol?

Many of you might have these questions and there is no simple answer to this as it depends on which trek you are attempting and in which season you are attempting the trek.

Now coming to treks like Rasol, Grahan, Kheerganga, Kutla etc. a guide may not be necessarily required as these have well-marked trails. Most of them are villages and villagers as well travellers use these trails regularly.

Also, there are signboards set up at several places during the trek so that you don’t lose your way. If you are beginner, but you don’t feel confident enough to do these treks on your own then go ahead and hire a local guide. Having a guide is always an added advantage.

In winter though, the difficulty level increases drastically if there is a lot of snow which is exactly the case for treks around Kasol like Kheerganga, Grahan, Rasol, Kutla etc. So, in winters if there is a lot of snow on the trails then hiring a guide is strongly recommended if you intend to trek to these places. But yes if you love challenging yourself then trekking in Kasol in winters can be an awesome experience.

Always ask the locals about the condition of the trails beforehand so that you can make necessary arrangements. You can get winter boots and trekking shoes on Rent in Kasol, Barshaini which is a must if you are attempting these treks in winter.

How to Reach Kasol, Malana gate, Barshaini, Tosh?

The internal commuting in Parvati valley is pretty good. There are locals buses plying between Bhunter and Barshaini frequently and it is budget-friendly. Of course, you can hire private cabs to reach these places, but it is a bit of an expensive affair if you are not in a group.

The only downside of using local buses is that you have to wait for most of the times, so if you are a group of around 5-6 people then hiring a cab makes much more sense.

Reaching Kasol is very easy, for more information you can check out my the Kasol itinerary blog . To reach Malana gate you have to get to Jari which in between Kasol and Bhunter. Local buses ply from both sides frequently i.e Kasol and Bhunter. From Jari, you have to take private cabs to reach Malana.

For the treks starting from Barshaini or Tosh, you can board buses going towards Barshaini from Kasol or Bhunter. Tosh is just 3km from Barshaini and private cabs can take you, Tosh from Barshaini.

Last but Definitely no the Least – Travel Responsibly

It is quite sad to see the current state of Parvati Valley. There is plastic on the roads, on the trails, literally everywhere. Please travel responsibly do not litter around and if possible do not buy plastic water bottles. Just get your own bottle and refill your water bottles wherever you stay and from the springs . Trust me, It is completely safe to do that.

I hope that this blog on treks around Kasol will be helpful to you and will help choose a trek as per your fitness levels and experience. If you are a beginner, then I hope that one of these treks becomes your first trek in the Himalayas. So, don’t hesitate to pack your bags and enjoy the hikes and treks in and around Kasol and Parvati Valley.

For Hindus, Kheerganga has spiritual importance. It is said that for thousands of years, the god of transformation and destruction, Lord Shiva, meditated here at the Shiva Temple.

The ambiance of the modest, tranquil temple is profoundly contemplative. Many hikers use this time to make prayers and find comfort in the peaceful surroundings.

For those looking for a closer relationship with nature and the divine, the walk is particularly special because of the temple’s presence and the spiritual aura of Kheerganga.

Trek with a Guide:  Hiring a local guide who is familiar with the area and can offer assistance and information is a good idea if you are not a seasoned trekker.

Kheerganga Trek – A Complete Travel Guide for Beginners

Shefali Joshi

Kheerganga trek takes you along a journey to discover Parvati Valley and one of its many secrets. Nestled deep in Himachal Pradesh, the views on this trek are invigorating, slowing unveiling the depth of the terrain. Also, this trek gives you ample opportunities to explore the beautiful and unique culture of the region.

If you are a beginner trekker or a backpacker looking for a hike deeper in the Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh, a trek to Kheerganga makes perfect sense for an upcoming trip. It is one of the most recommended treks when traveling to Parvati Valley .

Let's quickly dive into the details:

Mythology of Kheerganga

An important destination for both Hindus and Sikhs, Kheerganga has a rich history. Let’s look at it in more detail before we dive into the travel guide.

Parvati and Kartikeya

Kartikeya, son of Shivji and Parvati, chose Kheerganga for his meditation and prayers. When his parents decided to visit him, Parvati wanted to cook for her son. Thanks to the presence of hot water springs in the region, legends have it that Parvati would cook rice pudding (Kheer) in this water itself. Hence, the greyish color and the milkfish complexion of the river is because of this!

If you are confused about picking up any destination for the upcoming trip, then check my article on planning a visit to offbeat places in Himachal Pradesh ?

Kalyug Story

In Satyug, Kheer appeared out of nowhere when Shivji and Parvati Ji visited this place. However, Parvati Ji asked Purushotam to convert the Kheer into the water, knowing that people of Kalyug (aka us!) would fight over it.

The mighty Himalayas as seen in Parvati Valley

Gurunanak visiting Kheerganga

During Udasi, Guru Nanak Singh Ji came to Kheerganga to visit his staunch disciple – Bhai Mardana. During one such visit, Bhai Mardana was hungry but had no food available. Upon Guru Nanak Ji’s Bhai Mardana went to collect Aata (flour) from the Langar. But, there was no fire nearby to cook the chapatis.

Here, Guru Nanakji asked Mardana to remove a giant stone – and this is where a hot spring appeared. When Mardana dipped the Rotis into the spring, the Rotis sank. Upon the advice of Guru Nanak Ji, Mardana prayed to God for the Rotis to float back up, and when this happened, he pays it forward to feed other people as well. The Rotis did float back on to the surface, fully baked.

Thus, whoever donates in the name of God, with good intentions, will always have meaningful karma follow him as well.

Key Details about Kheerganga Trek

How to reach kheerganga trek.

The starting point for the trek to Kheerganga is Barshaini, which is easily connected by Kasol .

The nearest airport to Kasol is the Kullu Manali Airport in Bhuntar. The flights to Bhuntar are pretty limited, and apart from the frequency, the reliability can be up for a toss as well. Here, taxis and buses are available for your onward journey. The next (safer, reliable) option is the Mohali Airport (Chandigarh), approximately 300+ KMs away

The nearest railway station is Joginder Nagar railway station. You can hire a cab from here and you can reach Kasol in under 4 hours.

Obviously, the most convenient way to get into the Pavati Valley. Total driving time from Delhi to Kasol is about 12 hours, covering approximately 565 Kms. Take Tonnes of pit stops for an easy, memorable journey.

The roads to Kasol from Delhi is in good condition for the most part. All thanks to Parvati Valley being a famous place , especially amongst foreign tourists. The views are amazing, however, and compensates for the long road journey to Parvati Valley.

Beautiful Sunset in Parvati Valley

Many public transport buses leave ISBT, Delhi for an overnight journey to Bhuntar. Volvo/Mercedes buses will be available starting INR 1500. A bus from Chandigarh will take you around 8 hours.

From Bhuntar, you’ll need to change buses and catch the one heading to Manikaran and get off along the way at Kasol.

Taxis are available at all major stations (Airports, Railways, Bus Stops) – be prepared to haggle, especially if you’re getting off at the Railway Station. However, the best way to proceed with this would be to book a prepaid taxi service. Also, sharing cabs are available here.

Kheerganga Itinerary

The 13 km long trail from Barshaini to Kheerganga should take you around 4-6 hours, depending upon your fitness levels. Do not forget to refer the list of must-have things to carry on a trekking trip .

Day 0 – Reach Kasol

Reach Kasol by your preferred mode of transportation and enjoy the hippie scenes of the village. It is a cute little hamlet in Himachal , full of foreigners and has an innate charm that you cannot easily find anywhere else.

Day 1 – Reach Barshaini and Start your Kheerganga Trek

Leave early in the morning, but ensure the arrangements to reach Barshaini are done the day prior- as it becomes difficult to hail a cab/ catch a bus in the AM. 6 would be a perfect time to move upwards.

Routes to choose from for your Kheerganga Trek

There are three major routes that you can choose from. As the saying goes – I took the road less traveled and it made all the difference – or something like that.

  • Nakthan Route – This is the most popular route, as it is the quickest. You can reach Kheerganga in about 4 hours. If you believe in the destination and not the journey – then Nakthan is perfection (however, the journey is pretty too!). Once you reach the Barshaini Bridge, you’ll take a left and start on your way up to the Nakthan Village, leading you from the left side of the Parvati River. Since this is the most popular route, it is well marked and also has a tonne of tourists climbing up the hill.
  • Kalga Route – Instead of taking a left, turn right from the Barshaini bridge and start your hike towards Kalga. This route will merge with the main (Nakthan) route halfway through the trek. ON this trail, you’ll be crossing through dense forests, hence, for first-time trekkers – you might want to consider taking a guide along on this Himalayan trek.
  • Tosh Route – Another different path that will later merge into the Nakthan Route as well. This route is also quite mainstream, especially for people who were staying in Tosh before heading on the trek. Tosh river flows by near Tosh village which joins the Parvati river near Pulga.

You can also plan to visit Tosh on your trip to Kheerganga and add a night or two in Tosh to relax after the trek.

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

Up, up and away!

I would highly recommend choosing the Kalga route for ascending and either the Tosh Route or even the Nakthan Route for descending after completion of the Kheerganga Trek.

The trek is mild, especially in the beginning, and crosses through apple orchards. Nakthan has developed thanks to the presence of confirmed hikers in the region, and there are quite a few cafes sprinkled across. You can even stay here on your way back if interested in exploring the hamlet-life.

Nakthan is the center point near where all three routes would join. From Nakthan – you head on to RudraNag, which has the most beautiful waterfall. You should fill up your water bottles here. Rudranag has a beautiful Dharamshala as well, specially set up for the pilgrims.

Kheerganga Trek

30 Minutes after Rudranag, you will reach a bridge (on your right) with a cool dhaba that serves lip-smacking food. While there are plenty of shortcuts along the way – it is advisable (and advised!) to not venture out as there have been many fatal experiences here. Stick to the route!

Did you read my tips on trekking in the Himalayas for beginners ?

Halfway to Kheerganga

Halfway along, you’ll reach a dhaba, stand-alone and near a gushing waterfall, named Shalom Waterfall Café. Watermelon Juice comes highly recommended. Also, when at a dhaba in the hills, Maggi is a must (it’s the law!).

The trail gets slightly difficult after the halfway mark

The journey starts getting slightly tougher from here on out. It is a continuous climb, and although the path is well marked, it can be strenuous for first-time trekkers. The climb is tiring, so please walk at your own pace and enjoy the nature around you! Also, stay hydrated!

A good pair of trekking shoes is always a must for any Himalayan trek.

The final push to Kheerganga

It might seem the walk will never end, but you will first run into two dhabas with the most stunning views and then finally – one final turn – and you can see the huts and cafes and the hot water springs! There will be a newly added zeal to your steps, and the distance can easily be covered in under 10 minutes.

Also, you may want to return back to Barshaini or Tosh on the Same day, however, I would suggest spending a night (at least) in Kheerganga and choosing your path for return on the next day.

You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂

Tips for the Trek

  • Wake up early – Getting up when the Sun does is a difficult business – believe me, I understand. The hike is long, especially for the first-timers, and you don’t want to be covering a major part of your journey in the scorching sun. Yes, the temperatures are mild at such heights – but the intensity of the sun is equally up there.
  • Homestays all the way – Airbnb along the way (if you’re taking breaks and making the journey a longer one). There are some beautiful properties in Barshaini and Tosh as well as in the smaller hamlets perched along the way.
  • Nakthan should be a pit stop – This village is so gorgeous and full of life – it will be a great point to rest those legs. Also, it is almost the midpoint in your trail – a perfect medley. Nom on some Maggi and Fresh Juice while you’re at it – won’t forget about it soon.
  • Kheerganga is all about its hot springs – Parvati Kund. Not visiting while there will be a sin! Also, imagine being in a “hot bath” out in the cool breeze, absorbing in the views of high mountains of Parvati Valley. Are you intrigued yet? It is a sick feeling – don’t miss out on this!
  • Camp under the stars – This one is a given, right? Ah, the magical, mystical skies of Parvati Valley. Kheerganga is no exception – you will love every second and would probably be daring yourself to be up all night, in a spell-bound trance while camping. Enjoy, my friend!

Frequently Asked Questions

Please wear proper trekking shoes, and ensure that they are comfortable/broken in!

Layering is the KEY! Do pack clothes suitable for all weather conditions. And even if you’re doing the trek in summer months, do pack a jacket. Weather is tricky in the hills, and you should always go prepared.

There are no ATMs after Kasol. Hence, you must carry enough cash to pay meals and stay for Kheerganga trek.

It’s exceptionally difficult to find shared cabs/buses early in the morning to reach Barshaini. Plan in advance for any such shared transport else take your own car.

The best time to do the Kheerganga Trek is April to November. But, you should avoid the monsoon months. Also, always check the weather before any trekking adventure – with heavy rainfall, this easy trek can turn disastrous .

The network connectivity is zilch. You’re headed out into deep nature, so do not expect any connectivity. However, BSNL tends to catch some (intermittent) signal at some villages along the way. But, this is not to be trusted – happens sporadically.

There are food stalls and dhabas along the way – especially near-certain hamlets.

Views on the Kheerganga Trek

If crazy views are what you’re after – look no further. Head out to Kheerganga and experience the joy of being in the hills, within the hills. Parvati Valley holds many secrets; Kheerganga Trek is one way to understand the Valley better.

The best hiking essentials for beginners: Everything you need to head out on the trail

From hoka hiking boots to a durable water bottle, head out on your next hike with the best gear from top brands..

05web-hoka-anacapa-2-gtx-v2-800x600px.jpg

If you're new to hiking , prepare to become obsessed. Getting out on the trail is a chance to take a break from your normal routine and discover the beauty of nature. Plus, it counts as a workout and, depending on the trail, it can be a surprisingly intense one.

You don't need much to get started, but making sure you get best essentials is key to making your hiking adventure safe, comfortable and fun. There's nothing better than trekking out to a stunning waterfall -- and there's nothing worse than doing it in a pair of stiff, uncomfortable boots or a backpack that chafes and pinches at your shoulders.

To make sure you start your new hiking adventure on the right foot, we've put together a checklist of the best hiking essentials from our favorite boots  to our favorite app for finding and planning your next outdoor adventure.

A comfortable pair of hiking boots: Hoka Anacapa 2

hoka-anacapa-mid-hiking-boot-image.jpg

Finding a pair of hiking boots  that feel comfortable and provide the right kind of support might be the most important thing to do in preparation for your first hike. When your feet hurt, it's hard to think about anything else except how much your feet hurt. It can also be dangerous to head out on gravely or muddy trails in shoes that weren't designed to handle that kind of terrain.

Our favorite hiking boot is the Hoka Anacapa 2 Mid. Already well-known for its ultra-comfortable  running shoes  and  walking shoes , the brand's popular hiking boot received the American Podiatric Medical Association seal of acceptance as a comfortable, supportive boot.

The premium hiking boot features a lightweight EVA midsole, plush ankle collar and soft sock liner so your foot is completely enveloped in cloud-like comfort. A Gore-Tex liner and water-resistant leather upper protect your feet from the elements as you trek through mud, gravel and dirt.

Get the rugged yet cushy  Hoka  hiking boots for $195.

A durable and lightweight backpack: Fjallraven S/F expandable hip back

fjallraven-expandable-hip-pack.jpg

When it comes to choosing a hiking backpack  as a beginner, the key is to not overdo it. You don't need an oversized backpacking pack to head out on a two-mile hike. Remember that whatever you bring with you, you will be carrying from beginning to end.

That's why we recommend the Fjallraven S/F hip back. Ideal for short 1-2 hour hikes, you can wear it as a belt bag to stash your phone, keys, and water bottle. For a longer day hike, it expands into an 11.5-liter day pack with room enough to add a hearty lunch and extra water bottles alongside your other hiking essentials.

The expandable design is great for all kinds of day hikes, allowing you to be as unencumbered as possible while still being able to carry everything you need. Get the lightweight, expandable daypack at REI for $120.

A reusable water bottle: Hydro Flask

hydro-flask-40-oz-bottle.jpg

Staying hydrated is a top priority whenever you're exercising. But when you're out on a hike, it's more important than ever to make sure you're bringing enough water for the trek because you won't find many convenience stores out in the wilderness.

So make sure you grab a large-capacity yet lightweight water bottle  like the Hydro Flask. With its flex straw lid, it's easy to sip while you walk and the double wall insulation will keep your water refreshingly ice cold for up to 24 hours.

We also like this water bottle for hikers because of the convenient carry handle on the lid. This gives you the option to either clip it to a backpack or carry it by the handle if it's hot day and you'll be taking frequent sips.

Get the 40-ounce size on Amazon for $50.

Non-slip sunglasses that you can afford to lose: Goodr OG

goodr-og-sunglasses.jpg

When you're heading outdoors, it's important to bring plenty of sun protection. That means sunscreen, a hat, and a pair of sunglasses. For the most part, there's not one right answer for any of these. Whatever hat, sunscreen and shades you already own will likely work just fine on a hike.

With that said, if your sunglasses  are from a premium, expensive brand, we recommend leaving them at home. Not that you're planning to lose your sunglasses on the trail, but if you drop or break a $200 pair of shades, you will probably cry (at least, we sure would).

So we recommend wearing an affordable pair that do their sun-blocking job well but wouldn't sting as much if they accidentally got crushed at the bottom of your backpack.

These Goodr OG sunglasses fit the bill. They're lightweight and slip-resistant, so you can work up a sweat without them bouncing or sliding around your face. And as far as sun protection functionality, they're hard to beat with their polarized UV400 lenses that block out harmful UV rays and reduce glare.

Get them for $25 on Amazon or head directly to Goodr to shop their full collection of sport-specific sunnies.

An app that makes planning for your hike easy: AllTrails

alltrails-app-logo.jpg

Every hike is different. A five-mile loop on mostly flat terrain will require different gear than a five-mile uphill climb to a peak. The type of terrain, the amount of shade cover along the way and other details can also dramatically influence what you should pack and how much.

The best way to get all those details about a trail you've never hiked before is the AllTrails app. If Yelp and Strava had a baby that was obsessed with the outdoors, that's AllTrails.

You can search for trails near you and see real reviews from other people who have hiked them. Alongside key data like mileage, elevation gain, overall difficulty rating, and a map of the trail route, those reviews give you first-person insights into how well the trail is maintained, when it's most or least crowded, the best season or time of day to hike it in, and more.

While the free version of the app gives you access to the trail maps and the ability to make lists, we highly recommend upgrading to AllTrails+. It's just $35.99 per year and unlocks important features like the ability to download maps for offline use, get real-time alerts if you stray from the path and live share your location with friends and families in case you get lost.

The 10 essentials of hiking that should be in your backpack

The American Hiking Society has a short and handy guide of the ten essentials of hiking . It includes the following:

  • Comfortable footwear
  • Sun protection, including a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
  • A map (or GPS-enabled smartwatch or device)
  • Rain gear and dry-fast layers
  • Safety items, including a flashlight, whistle, and a way to start a fire
  • A basic first aid kit
  • A knife or multi-tool
  • Shelter (which can be an emergency space blanket for short hikes)

We covered the first four in the roundup above, along with the backpack to stash it all in. For the rest of the items, what you pick will really depend on where you're going and how long your trek is. You can use the AllTrails app to help you figure out what kind of food and emergency gear make sense to bring with you.
