General Information About Kenya

Kenya is a country in East Africa with coastline on the Indian Ocean. It encompasses savannah, lakelands, the dramatic Great Rift Valley, mountain highlands and abundant wildlife such as lions, elephants and rhinos. From Nairobi, the capital, safaris visit the Maasai Mara reserve, known for its annual wildebeest migrations, and Amboseli National Park, offering views of Tanzania's 5,895m Mt. Kilimanjaro.

On December 12, 1963, Kenya became an independent Nation. In 1964 the country became a republic, with Kenyatta as president. More than 70% of the country was affected by the sub-Saharan drought of the early 1970s. After Kenyatta's death in 1978, Vice President Daniel arap Moi succeeded him as president. In 1992, Moi was re-elected president in Kenya's first multiparty election in 26 years. Opponents denounced the election as rigged. Under the constitution Moi who was forced to retire nominated Uhuru Kenyatta, son of Kenya's first leader, as the Kenya African National Union (KANU) candidate for president. Mwai Kibaki, who ran against Moi in 1992 and 1997 and once was his vice president, was the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) candidate and the most popular of all the candidates. Kibaki was elected president with 62% of the vote, and NARC won a majority of seats in the national assembly. Kenya is south of Ethiopia, west of Somalia, and north of Tanzania, and is twice the size of Nevada. It has Africa’s second highest mountain, Mount Kenya north of the capital Nairobi, and more than thirty million people. Kenyans mostly speak Swahili and English, and they grow a lot of very good coffee, which you can see sometimes on sale in the United States in supermarkets and coffee shops. Kenya is where humanity first evolved.

Scientists have found over 230 skeletons of early human beings near Lake Rudolf in northern Kenya, going back millions of years. This is why Kenya, and particularly a great five-thousand-mile slash in the Earth’s crust called the “Rift Valley”, is sometimes called “the cradle of humanity”. As ages passed, human beings migrated out of Africa into Asia and Europe, and then, about 15,000 years ago, into the Americas. During the first millennium A.D., Arab traders settled on the coast. African people, like the Luo and Kikuyu peoples, migrated to the inland areas, trading ivory, gold and slaves with the Arabs. The Swahili language, with Arabic and African roots, grew up as a way for them all to talk to one another. There are over 70 ethnic groups in Kenya, and they use Swahili and sometimes English to talk to one another. The British conquered Kenya in the 1890s, but in 1963 Kenya won its independence from Britain. The independence movement was led by Jomo Kenyatta, who became the first president of an independent Kenya. His slogan was “Harambee”, Swahili for “All Pull Together”. Between 1969 and 1991, only one political party was allowed, but now there are many parties. As of 2008, the president is Mwai Kibaki of the National Rainbow Coalition.

Kenya Today

To the relief of many, in 2002 Moi announced his intention to retire. He put his weight firmly behind Uhuru Kenyatta, the son of Jomo Kenyatta, as his successor. Meanwhile, 12 opposition parties and several religious groups united under the umbrella of the National Alliance Party of Kenya (NAK), later known as the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC). Presidential candidate Mwai Kibaki was the former head of the Democratic party. Although initially dogged by infighting, within weeks the opposition transformed itself into a dynamic and unified political party. When the election came on 27 December 2002 it was peaceful and fair and the result was dramatic – a landslide two-thirds majority for Mwai Kibaki and NARC. Kibaki was inaugurated as Kenya’s third president on 30 December 2002. The new regime has been plagued by a constant stream of party infighting, corruption and economic problems. The path to reform has been slower and more tortuous than many people had hoped, although some progress has been made, such as new matatu (minibus transport) regulations. However, security and corruption remain worrying issues, locals complain that the cost of living has virtually doubled, and Kenya has fallen 20 places on the UN Human Development Index since 2002. With elections due once again in 2007, an energetic Uhuru Kenyatta at the head of the newly regrouped KANU, and an ambitious bid for the 2016 Olympic Games attracting international attention, the next few years will be an interesting time in Kenyan politics, and Kibaki certainly has plenty of challenges still to come.

It largest city of Kenya. It is popularly known as the "Green City in the Sun." Founded in 1899, the city was handed capital status from Mombasa in 1905. Nairobi is also the capital of the Nairobi Province and of the Nairobi District. The city lies on the Nairobi River, in the south of the nation, and has an elevation of 1661 m (5450 ft) above sea-level. Nairobi is the most populous city in East Africa, with an estimated urban population of between 3 and 4 million. According to the 1999 Census, in the administrative area of Nairobi, 2,143,254 inhabitants lived within 684 km². Nairobi is currently the 4th largest city in Africa. Nairobi is now one of the most prominent cities in Africa politically and financially. Home to many companies and organizations, Nairobi is established as a hub for business and culture.

Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa. It is situated in the Gauteng Province.

The original Arabic name is Manbasa; in Kiswahili it is called Kisiwa Cha Mvita (or Mvita for short), which means "Island of War", due to the many changes in its ownership. The town is also the headquarters of Mombasa District which, like most other districts in Kenya, is named after its chief town. Mombasa and the Coastal towns have exquisite beaches considered "heaven on earth!" Kisumu is served by Kisumu Airport, with regular daily flights to Nairobi and elsewhere. Kisumu literally means a place of barter trade "sumo". The city has "Friendship" status with Cheltenham, UK and "Sister City" status with Roanoke, Virginia, USA

The name "Eldoret" is based on the Maasai word "eldore" meaning "stony river" because the bed of the nearby Sosiani River is very stony. A "t" was added to make it sound like a Nandi word. At start of the colonial era, the area was occupied by the Nandi, before that by the Maasai and before that the Sirikwa. The town is now home to a large market, Moi University and Eldoret International Airport. It is also known for its cheese factory. Major industries include textiles, wheat, pyrethrum and corn. The town has a number of factories. Eldoret is the hometown of numerous legendary Kenyan runners, the most renowned of whom is Kipchoge Keino. The high altitude is an ideal training ground for many middle and long distance athletes. The runners from Eldoret have contributed significantly to the economy of Eldoret town from their winnings in races all over the world

The main tourist season is in January and February, when the weather is hottest and driest. At this time, the animals in the wildlife parks tend to congregate more around the watercourses, making them easier to spot. However, the parks can get crowded and rates for accommodation soar – also make sure you avoid Christmas and Easter unless you want to pay much higher prices. From June to October, the annual wildebeest migration takes place, with thousands of animals streaming into the Masai Mara National Reserve from the Serengeti. During the long rains (the low season, spanning from March to the end of May) things are much quieter. Wildlife is harder to spot and mosquitoes are rife, a combination that keeps most tourists away.

Kenya’s diverse geography means that temperature, rainfall and humidity vary widely, but there are effectively four distinct zones. The hot, rainy plateau of western Kenya has rainfall throughout the year, the heaviest usually during April, when as much as 200mm may be recorded, and the lowest in January, with an average of 40mm. Temperatures range from a minimum of 14°C to 18°C to a maximum of 30°C to 36°C throughout the year. The temperate Rift Valley and Central Highlands have perhaps the most agreeable climate in the country. Average temperatures vary from a minimum of 10°C to 14°C to a maximum of 22°C to 28°C. Rainfall varies from a minimum of 20mm in July to 200mm in April, falling in essentially two seasons – March to the beginning of June (the ‘long rains’) and October to the end of November (the ‘short rains’). Mt Kenya and the Aberdare Range are the country’s main water catchments, with falls of up to 3000mm per year recorded in these places. In the semiarid bushlands of northern and eastern Kenya temperatures vary from highs of up to 40°C during the day to less than 20°C at night. Rainfall in this area is sparse and, when it does occur, is often in the form of violent storms. July is usually the driest month, and November the wettest. The average annual rainfall varies between 250mm and 500mm. The consistently humid coast region has rainfall averages from 20mm in February to around 300mm in May. Rainfall is dependent on the monsoon, which blows from the northeast from October to April and from the southwest for the rest of the year. The average annual rainfall is between 1000mm and 1250mm (less in drought years). Average temperatures vary little during the year, ranging from 22°C to 30°C.

Currency Of Kenya

The SI unit of currency is the Kenyan shilling (KSh), which is made up of 100 cents. Notes in circulation are KSh1000, 500, 200, 100, 50 and 20, and there are also new coins of KSh40, 20, 10, five and one in circulation. Old coins are much bigger and heavier, and come in denominations of KSh5 (seven-sided) and KSh1. The old 50¢, 10¢ and 5¢ coins are now pretty rare, as most prices are whole-shilling amounts. Note that most public telephones accept only new coins. Locally, the shilling is commonly known as a ‘bob’, after the old English term for a one-shilling coin. The shilling has been relatively stable over the last few years, maintaining fairly constant rates against a falling US dollar and a strong British pound. Both these currencies are easy to change throughout the country, as is the euro, which is rapidly replacing the dollar as the standard currency quoted for hotel prices on the coast. Cash is easy and quick to exchange at banks and forex bureaus, but carries a higher risk of theft. On the other hand, travellers cheques are replaceable, but are increasingly less widely accepted, and often carry high commission charges

Virtually all banks in Kenya now have ATMs at most branches, but their usefulness to travellers varies widely. Barclays Bank has easily the most reliable machines for international withdrawals, with a large network of ATMs covering most major Kenyan towns. They support MasterCard, Visa, Plus and Cirrus international networks. Standard Chartered and Kenya Commercial Bank ATMs also accept Visa but not the other major providers, and are more likely to decline transactions. Whichever bank you use, the international data link still goes down occasionally, so don’t rely on being able to withdraw money whenever you need it.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are becoming increasingly popular, with old fraud-friendly, fully manual swipe machines slowly being replaced by electronic systems. While there’s less chance of someone making extra copies of chits this way, the connections fail with tedious regularity. Visa and MasterCard are now widely accepted, but it would be prudent to stick to up-market hotels, restaurants and shopping centres to use them.

Moneychangers

The best places to change money are foreign exchange or ‘forex’ bureaus, which can be found everywhere and usually don’t charge commission. The rates for the main bureaus in Nairobi are published in the Daily Nation newspaper. Watch out for differing small bill (US$10) and large bill (US$100) rates; the larger bills usually get the better rates. Banks also change money, but they charge large commissions and there’s a fee per travellers cheque, so you’re better off carrying larger denominations. The rates for travellers cheques may be better than at the bureaus, and you’ll have the added bonus of being able to put your money away in the secure setting of the bank foyer. American Express (Amex) has offices in Mombasa and Nairobi, where you can buy and sell Amex travellers cheques.

Travellers Cheques

Travellers cheques are accepted if they are in US dollars, British pounds or euros. High commission charges are common, and bureaus that charge no commission will often give a rate substantially below the cash rate for cheques. Charges vary widely, from 1% to 3% per transaction, to flat fees of up to US$15.

Nightlife Of Kenya

Kenya is one of the most beautiful places for sightseeing endeavors and nature tourism, but in terms of nightlife in Kenya there is much on offer. The city of Nairobi is full of choices of nightlife and has a regular assortment of casinos, nightclubs and movie theaters. The main theatres of the city of Nairobi offer Hollywood features and they also have an entire collection of Hindi films that are often also shown in many smaller cinemas outside of the capital. Mombasa is also another area that offers a variety of entertainment options. Sone of the Show trips are of a unique flavor and many of the cruises can be taken in brod daylight or even in the dark. The trips are expensive, but typically include a gourmet meal. Nairobi and Mombasa both offer a good selection of nightclubs and dance bars. Some clubs offer live entertainment in Nairobi and Mombasa and both cities offer a good selection of dance clubs. Some clubs offer live entertainment and Nairobi offers discos and Djs for all the pr grammes that are offered for everyone's viewing. There are a lot of tribal dance shows that are entertaining and the Masai are always incredible with their athletic skills and their leaping contests. Most dances are accompanied with traditional tribal songs as well.

There are a host of nightclubs in Nairobi that are very sought after and are very popular with the expatriates and the foreign tourists alike. Gipsy's is a bar in Nairobi that attracts a lot of the expatriates and the foreigners. Florida 2000 on Moi avenue is also a well known food and dance bar. Eldoret is one of the most favorite bars of locals and foreigners alike in Nairobi. It is on Odinga Street and presently they have located elsewhere temporarily somewhere out of town on Uganda Road in the direction of Nakuru Sam's Underground Disco on Uganda Road is the place most people head to after a drink or two in Eldoret. Kisumu is also a well known bar over the other side of the bay. The Octopus on Ogada Street is the most popular nightclub in Nairobi. The Lantern or the Kenyatta Street is a nice place that serves great food and is decently priced as well it also has nice entertainment on the floor and a very cheap hotel is also attached to the hotel attached. The Makuti Club is a hilarious place to be in and the décor here is wooden and also replete with a grass roof and leopard prints

Language Of Kenya

Kenya is a multilingual country. Although the official languages are Swahili and English, there are actually a total of 62 languages spoken in the country (according to Ethnologue). These mainly consist of tribal African languages as well as a minority of Middle - Eastern and Asian languages spoken by descendants of foreign settlers (i.e. Arabic, Hindi, etc). The African languages come from three different language families - Bantu languages (spoken in the center and southeast), Nilotic languages (in the west), and Cushitic languages (in the northeast).
