Lamanai Maya Ruins Tour form San Pedro Ambergris Caye

Lamanai is the Maya word for “submerged crocodile.” The site’s name – “Lamanay” or “Lamayna” was recorded by Franciscan missionaries in the seventeenth century. It is one of the only sites retaining its original name and is among one of Belize’s largest ceremonial centre. The name Lamanai helps to explain the numerous crocodile motifs at the site. Crocodile effigies appear on figurines, vessel decorations, and on the large headdress on a limestone mask at one of the principal structures at the site.

Lamanai , located on the banks of the New River Lagoon, is easist visited by boar river tour along the spectacular new river. The trip is a nature-lover’s heaven for numerous species of water birds live along this rich and diverse waterway. You may even be lucky enough to view iguanas and crocodiles as they sun themselves on the river banks. There are also interesting flora and fauna to be seen at the Lamanai reserve.

While the site was recorded by missionaries and also mentioned by Thomas Gann in the 1920’s, it was not until 1974 that formal excavations were carried out at the site by Dr. David Pendergast up until 1986. More recent work has been carried out by Dr. Elizabeth Graham.

Previous archaeological work has focused not only on the ancient Maya aspect of the site, but also the colonial era, with investigations into both the Spanish churches as well as the sugar mill.

Lamanai boasts the third tallest Maya structure in Belize, aptly called High Temple, which stands 33 meters tall. Perhaps the most iconic feature of Lamanai is the Mask Temple. The masks featured on this temple is 4.2 m high. It was built up of limestone blocks which were mortared together and then overlaid with a thin layer of lime plaster and a finishing coat of stucco.

This method of construction is unusual in the Maya area, where masks and friezes were usually built up and modelled with plaster on a stone block framework. Some blocks appear to be quite large; for example, the upper section of the face is one large block whereas on the sides of the face, the edges of smaller blocks can be seen. The nose, however, was made up of two pieces of stone either side; the nostrils and middle section were then infilled with mortar and smaller pieces of stone. Each ear flare is also carved from one single block of stone.

  • bobbiejod954 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Zip Line and Cave Tubing Victor was an amazing guide! He picked us up at the airport, drove us to breakfast, then off to zip lining. He hooked us up with zip guides and we were on our way to 3 first time runs and 1 who zipped 10 years prior. Safety was key, great harnesses and attention to detail keeping us secure, then instructions to remind us along the way of what to do. We had a blast. Then Victor drove us to the cave tubing location and walked us to the starting point (normally a 20-minute walk). Post knee replacement surgery, I was slow going, but he matched my pace for our group and got us there with details about the limestone, the caves, the trees, the fruits, the nuts and the wildlife. So informative, kind and he had a couple of jokes to share as well!!! Definitely recommend!!! Read more Written April 16, 2021
  • jesskelley1225 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Jungle Zip Line and Cave Tubing Juan and Bigs were fantastic! They went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable the entire trek through the jungle and gave us tons of history along the way. Definitely recommend! Read more Written January 27, 2020
  • Meggan N 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing Experience!! We booked this online with Jovan through the website. Did the Jungle ATVs in the morning, had a great lunch, and the cave tubing in the afternoon. They made the transfer from San Pedro really easy by booking our flights for us (these as well as breakfast and lunch were included in the price) and having Ricky pick us up from the airport. He brought us to a wonderful bakery for breakfast and then drove us to the area to do the cave tubing and ATVs. ATVS were fun, and lunch was really good (BBQ chicken with beans and rice), but the cave tubing experience was my favorite. Ricky was really knowledgeable about the flora in the area and talked about everything we were seeing on our hike to the cave. He also knew the cave so well and was taking to areas that no one else was going to. He kept us away from all the cruise ship groups so we could have a relaxing ride through the cave and jungle. I would definitely recommend doing this and hopefully you can get Ricky as your guide b/c he was fabulous!! Read more Written September 27, 2019
  • Brian W 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Trip Our driver was incredibly knowledgeable about all things Belize, took excellent care of us and went out of his way to make sure we had the best trip ever. Water was a little low during the cave tubing yet we still had a remarkable time. All was well worth the travel into the jungle. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! DO NOT FORGET A WATERPROOF CAMERA CASE.. We made the mistake... Read more Written September 14, 2019
  • Crystal M 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles ATM Cave We read so many reviews about this company from past customers who said they got scammed. We were hesitant to book but no-one else offered to pick us up from our resort for free. Jovan, the owner had us pay after the tour and said if we didn't had fun, it's on the house... Quite a catch so we went ahead and reserve. This was the most extreme tour we took while in Belize and glad we did. Our guides were very cautious about safety. They told us about the Maya who used these caves thousands of years ago. It was very educational. The hike wasn't bad. We hiked for about half hour to get to the cave entrance. We ventured inside to see the hundreds of potteries on the floor of the cave. Human bones scatter the floor as we walked around inside while our guide told us about the Mayas. It was a real unique experience. Definitely find time to dingus tour while in Belize. You won't regret it. Read more Written September 10, 2019
  • AmberLee2012 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Cave Rafting in the dark Me and my friends made it to Belize for the first time. We stayed at Belizean Shores Resort located north of the bridge on San Pedro. We arranged a tour through a friend who went with this companay before and recommended them. She told us to ask for Dre to be our guide and to do rafting instead of tubing. We took a small plane to Belize City and met Dre who took us to Nohoch Cheen cave. We did the zipline tour first which was fun and we wanted more. After zipline was a tasty BBQ lunch at a restaurant at the park. We then hiked through the jungle while Dre told us about the trees in the area. Biggs took our rafts up to the cave entrance while we took our paddles. We paddle on our own freely exploring parts of the cave that nobody goes. We saw some jaguar footprints, howler monkeys and lots of birds. Our headlights lit the dark cave as we paddle pass underground waterfalls and we had time to explore the dry cave to see Maya potteries. This was a Fun adventure. It makes tubing seems boring and we glad we had Dre as our guide. Thanks guys. We had lots of fun. Read more Written September 1, 2019
  • Susane L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles "Must do Adventure" ATM cave was fun, Lamanai was ok, but our day in the jungle riding ATVs and exploring the cave was the best adventure from the rest. We did the other activities with another outfit, but no one else did the ATV and rafting tour. Tubing seems ok but we wanted to be on our own instead of having a guide pull us through the cave. After reading the great reviews and the really bad ones we contacted to find out for ourselves whats going on. We went ahead and reserve and had the option to pay after the the tour. We had passes to Belize city from San Pedro so we took the boat over to Belize city and met Raheem. He was a great guide. We did the ATV first and that was a blast. My kids loved the mud and wanted more. We had to wash off at the showers because our clothes were muddy. We had a local lunch at a restaurant in the area where they served us rice and beans with stewed chicken. My kids loved the food and my husband loved the beers. After lunch we headed for the caves. The walk was about half hour through the jungle where Raheem and Biggs helps us carry our rafts to the cave entrance. We paddle down stream through the cave and explore parts of the cave that no other company goes. We also had the opportunity to explore the dry cave and saw some Maya pottery. We saw others tubing and was glad we decided to raft instead. They looked bored as we passed them inside the cave. Our day was well planned and executed. My kids surely enjoyed themselves and we glad we did this tour. Make sure you take out your garbage. the place is an eco friendly park!!! Read more Written August 29, 2019
  • TJ G 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beat Ever! Had a fun day at ATM Cave today. This cave is the best. You should find time to visit this cave while in Belize. The hike was not bad and there weren't any tight spaces you have to worry about. The formations and the artifacts was the highlight. I see why there are no cameras allowed. Best day of our vacation. Take tennis shoes. No flip flops allowed. Thanks Jovan and Rick. Read more Written August 29, 2019
  • Gs201990 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Jovan and Belize Jungle trek are scammers We booked our tour months in advance, paid through the third party website he gave us and then never heard from Jovan again. When our tour date neared we had to send multiple e-mails to try and reach him for an itinerary. Ultimately he gave us one and asked for payment again, even though we had already paid. Once he realized we weren't another "catch" to scam we never heard from him again and he never showed up for our tour as planned. We had to go through the third party website to fight for our refund. AVOID AT ALL COST. As you can see, this has happened to multiple people in the past few months. Read more Written August 27, 2019
  • Kayla N 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Thank you Dre Choose this option instead of tubing. Paddle yourself through the cave instead of having your guides pull you through the cave. • Techsavvy12 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Jovan is a Scammer I wish I had checked these reviews before I booked so I could save myself the hassle. I don’t know why Jovan and his sham company continues to be listed here on TripAdvisor. Book with him and you WILL get ripped off. I booked through a third party website, and it turns out I was lucky after reading other reviews posted here. He was very responsive until we booked. I had an inland Maya ruin and atv tour booked weeks in advance. There was no follow up until the night before asking if he could rebook me because of some payment issues. I had paid in full!! Then he said he was waiting on my payment from the third party site and that he was having a lot of trouble with them keeping money for tours. The next morning I angrily sent an email to the website and demanded a refund. Jovan said he could only take me if I paid cash the day. Well, this was all a big fat lie. The website staff quickly confirmed that he was communicating with them that day and telling them I was on the tour and he needed the rest of the money from my payment. They sent me the email screenshots. He completely tried to defame them and defraud them at the same time. How shameful. I don’t understand why the authorities in Belize have not shut him down yet and why TripAdvisor continues to sell his services. The other website quickly delisted him and I heard they are still trying to recover money from other tours they had paid him and he didn’t fulfill. That website quickly issued a full refund to me and were very responsive and understanding. They even helped me find other tours with reputable companies. While it ruined my vacation a bit, I’m so happy I did not pay him directly or through payoneer like others who have reviewed here and never got back their refund. The Belize authorities need to shut him down because he is giving their beautiful country a bad name. Look how many other travelers in the past few weeks alone have reported almost similar experiences. Imagine how many others there are who just haven’t posted a review. You can clearly see a pattern here. If you are reading this, then read no more...stay far far away from this guy unless you want to be ripped off. Find a reputable company and save yourself the hassle. Read more Written August 6, 2019
  • Aspainsport 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles We are back again... A few years ago we visited Belize for the first time and now we were back for more adventure. Last time we did Black Hole Drop, Lamanai Mayan Ruins and ATM Cave. This time around we tried Zipline and Cave Tubing. We did all our tours through our resort last time so this time around we decided to try an outfit that allowed us to customise our tour. We came accross these guys online and after a prompt response, we decided to book. Setting up the tour was easy. We got got picked up on time from our resort by taxi and made the flight to Belize City where we met Jovan our guide. The Zipline was fun for my kids. A little scary at first but they got the hang of it. There were two lines that goes across the river and back. The guys on the Zipline were great. They told us about the trees in the jungle and the animals that lives in the area. Lunch was delicious. BBQ with rice and beans was the choice that day before we geared up for the float through the cave. After a half hour walk through the jungle, we made our way to the entrance of the cave where Jovan and Biggs kept us close together and guided us through the dark cave. Jovan thought us about the Maya's and cave formations and a whole lot more. The water was cold but he kept saying it's refreshing... Both tours were organised perfectly for my family and the logistics was right on point. We will be back for more adventure and will definitely choose these guys again. Make sure to take bug spray and money for tips. Read more Written June 29, 2019
  • HarryO77 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles *SCAM ALERT* Booked a tour for 4 with Belize Jungle Trek for a trip to the ATM caves. Waited outside our hotel for an hour to be picked up by our cab driver who never showed. After multiple attempts at communicating with Jovan we found out our driver had fallen ill the night before and was in the hospital. We were assured our trip would be refunded and it’s been well over a month. Jovan was receptive at first, but his radio silence persists. No trip, no refund, this company is bogus. Don’t waste your hard earned money or your precious time. Read more Written June 25, 2019

We paid via Payoneer. Jovan said that he requested that Payoneer send funds back to us. Upon calling Payoneer he did not even call them. We are now in the dispute process with Payoneer. This guy can’t be trusted and is a thief. Read more Written June 24, 2019

SCAM We had four people booked for the ATM tour and woke up at 430 am to be picked up by 530 for our boat ride from Ambergris Caye to Belize City. A man by the name of Don Victor was to pick us up. After waiting 30-40 minutes and trying multiple times to call ‘JOVAN’ he finally called me after I had emailed him finally livid. He said the driver had fallen ill and was in the hospital and we would have to cancel the tour and that our money would be refunded to us in 10 days via Payoneer. It has been over three weeks and still no refund. Jovan had been in touch with me very frequently at first but is no longer reaching back out to me. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt but after seeing multiple bad reviews on here the other day it is evident that we will not be hearing back from Jovan. I urge every one to not book with this company!!!!! Read more Written June 21, 2019
