When I started practicing yoga in college about a decade ago, I was still figuring out who I was. While attempting to balance newfound independence, heartbreak, and restlessness, I had a strong desire for something more. I found that in yoga. It helped me come back home to myself and recover my inner strength.

Now, as a longtime student and teacher of yoga, I’ve begun to notice the timeless life lessons my practice has shared with me. There are likely an infinite number of insights I’ve received from my practice during the last decade. And I’m certain, as time goes by, I’ll become aware of even more. But there are currently 101 graces that I can think of to share. As you read through, maybe they’ll also resonate with you and remind you of the marvelous and multifaceted gift of yoga.

101 Life Lessons Yoga Continues to Teach Me

1. Meet yourself where you are. 2. More often than not, you can choose your own happiness. 3. Never underestimate the value of a like-minded community. 4. You carry a lot of emotion and energy in your hips.

5. It’s okay to cry in Pigeon Pose . (Or any pose, for that matter.) 6. A big part of your strength is your focus. 7. Listen to your body. 8. Don’t hold onto anything too tightly. 9. Change is the only constant. 10. Stillness can be just as powerful as action. 11. Your breath is one of the most powerful elements in the universe. 12. Harnessing your breath can change everything. 13. Every body is unique. 14. Every body is beautiful. 15. Every body is capable and strong. 16. Flexibility is a strength. 17. Sometimes you just need a little peace and quiet. 18. It’s always better to be barefoot. 19. Always. 20. Sitting on the floor is extremely grounding. 21. Honor your teachers. 22. But don’t turn them into gods. 23. No one is perfect. 24. Everyone makes mistakes. 25. Caring for your physical space is caring for yourself. 26. The study of self is a never-ending journey. 27. And it’s meant to be fun and inspiring. 28. Don’t smile if you don’t mean it. 29. Believe in the kindness of others. 30. Don’t stretch yourself too thin. 31. Keep your head up. 32. Believe in magic. 33. Don’t let fear hold you back from anything. 34. It’s incredibly comfortable to cook while standing in Tree Pose. 35. And I’ll never understand why. 36. You don’t have to find something else to do just because you’re waiting in line. 37. The best things in life aren’t things. 38. We are responsible for the Universe. 39. Because we are the Universe. 40. Life is a continuous dance of opposing energies.

41. You can either try to control them or let them flow. 42. We often choose unnecessary resistance. 43. But it’s equally accessible to choose ease. 44. There are few things that Child’s Pose can’t help with. 45. Be constantly humbled by the world around you. 46. There can be the most tremendous meaning in the most mundane moment. 47. Tread lightly. 48. Tread respectfully. 49. Take only what you need. 50. When your wants are few, you are much more prosperous. 51. Follow what you love. 52. A yoga practice or pose is not an end goal. 53. It’s a constant journey of discovery and learning. 54. Always keep a beginner’s mind. 55. Discipline is different than regimentation. 56. Dedication and hard work are powerful and noble. 57. Energy goes where intention flows. 58. Your vibe affects your habits. 59. And your habits affect your destinies. 60. Your body can manifest your unexpressed emotions. 61. You don’t have to look outside yourself to be saved. 62. You carry a wealth of insight and power. 63. Everything you need is already within you. 64. You are not a human doing. 65. You are a human being. 66. It’s not about how much you got done. 67. It’s about if you have a life filled with joy. 68. And love. 69. We can see further when we learn from those who have come before us. 70. Always invite more grace. 71. Never be judgemental. 72. Including about yourself.

A person practices yoga with one hand on a yoga block next to their foot.

73. Use your blocks. 74. Not your ego. 75. Sometimes, a good yin class can be even more potent than a power flow. 76. Yoga is way more than just postures. 77. Quality over quantity. 78. Everything in moderation. 79. Even, sometimes, moderation. 80. If you put an intention behind something, it becomes more magical. 81. You owe it to others and yourself to be as truthful and authentic as possible. 82. And sometimes that looks like boundaries and assertiveness. 83. You can change what happens to you by changing yourself. 84. Those who are compulsively attached to an outcome can’t enjoy it. 85. Anatomy is super confusing. 86. But it’s also incredibly fascinating. 87. Have gratitude for your body 88. Have gratitude for life. 89. Have compassion for yourself and others. 90. Accept imperfections. 91. Letting go of what no longer serves you is a lifelong practice. 92. Your posture is super important. 93. So is balance, mobility and coordination. 94. Keep an open mind. 95. Learning to embrace vulnerability is worth it. 96. You should always move from your core. 97. Have clear boundaries. 98. But have no limits. 99. Life is all about balance. 100. And it will never be perfect. 101. And that’s okay.

Beginner Yoga: Embarking on the Yogic Journey

life journey yoga

Maybe you’ve tried a few classes and now you’re ready to establish a regular yoga practice. Or perhaps you’ve never taken a class but have heard about the benefits of yoga and want to give it a go.

There are plenty of benefits to be had from embarking on the yogic journey, and deciding to commit to a regular practice is an exciting step. Luckily, in the 21st century, there are resources galore to support you on your path, help you connect with the yoga community at large, and help you find your personal community.

And the best part? Yoga is an inclusive practice—everyone is invited, and all can participate.

A great place to start as a beginner is…beginner yoga. So here we’re sharing some of the current research on the benefits of yoga, definitions for basic yogic terms, tips for diving in with confidence, and more.

Why try yoga?

Clinical studies overwhelmingly laud the effects of regular yoga practices on the body and mind. Scientific research suggests that benefits can include the following:

Reducing stress , anxiety , and depression

Improving working memory

Improving overall physical fitness and quality of life

Relieving chronic pain

But this is not an exhaustive list. For more information, check out websites such as Yoga Alliance and Harvard Health .

Have you heard of these yoga myths?

“You need to be flexible to do yoga.”

Not true ! The belief that you need a high degree of flexibility in order to practice yoga poses is simply—and luckily!—untrue. First of all, yoga is about what’s going on inside, not how a pose looks on the outside. Secondly, there are many ways to safely enter into postures despite limited range of motion in certain parts of the body. Props like yoga blocks, straps, and bolsters are now common in studios, and they can be easily ordered online if you prefer a home practice. What’s more, people who are “naturally flexible” have their own unique challenges—for instance, they may be more prone to overstretching. Everyone’s body is different, and yoga encourages us to embrace our bodies exactly as they are and to work with what we’ve got.

“Yoga is a religion.”

It’s not. While yoga aims to integrate the mind, body, and spirit, and is thus considered by many to be a spiritual practice, it is not a religion or exclusive in any way. The degree to which the practice of yoga is “spiritual” is entirely decided by the individual practitioner. People of all religious backgrounds can and do practice it. As you establish a regular practice, you might choose to learn more about the philosophical tenets on which yoga is founded, but you certainly don’t have to in order to practice and experience the benefits of the physical postures. The only requirement is that you show up on your mat!

“Yoga takes a lot of time.”

It doesn’t have to! There are tons of beginner yoga classes that you can do in fifteen minutes or less. In fact, incorporating a short daily session into your life can have a significant impact on your well-being. When practiced with mindfulness, a daily yoga practice can help to lower blood pressure , build stronger bones , enhance your focus, and improve your overall mental, spiritual, and physical health. Over time, if you find you want to do a longer practice, incorporating that into your routine will come naturally.

“Yoga is too complicated.”

Yoga can delve deeply into the intricacies of alignment and anatomy—but again, it doesn’t have to! Any yogic journey begins with simply building a basic foundation. In this beginner yoga guide, we aim to help you to get started without getting bogged down by overly complicated jargon and concepts.

Basic Terms for Yoga Beginners

Asana - A physical yoga posture or pose. An asana class involves primarily yoga postures, whereas a class that is focused on yoga ethics or meditation may not include any movement at all.

Ayurveda - An ancient system of medicine with historical roots in India.

Mantra - A word or sound that is repeated to achieve a meditative state.

Mudra - A symbolic gesture; typically a hand gesture.

Namaste - A salutation in Indian culture. It is a Sanskrit word that means “I bow to the divine in you.”

Pranayama - In Sanskrit, prana means “life force” or “life energy,” and yama refers to “control.” Pranayama is the practice of controlling life energy through the skillful manipulation of breath. Common beginner breathing techniques include nadi shodhanam pranayama ( alternate nostril breathing ) and ujjayi pranayama ( victory breath ).

Sanskrit - The ancient Indian language in which the scriptures of yoga are written. Some teachers use the Sanskrit names for yoga poses or other yoga-related terms.

Sequence - A series of poses that complete a practice.

There are many beginner yoga terms to discover, but these are the ones you’re most likely to hear. We don’t want you to feel that yoga requires a dictionary to get started!

Props to Help Yoga Beginners

Props have many uses in beginner yoga; when used properly, they can make poses more accessible and allow for deeper stretches. They can also provide stability and may reduce the risk of injury. Students of all abilities and levels embrace props, and there are yoga classes outside of beginner yoga that emphasize using them as well—such as restorative yoga or Iyengar yoga.

In beginner yoga classes, you may find that placing blocks under your hands in a forward bend, for instance, makes the forward bend more accessible for you than would reaching all the way to the ground. And in a pose like seated forward fold, using a strap could help you find better alignment. Props like blankets and bolsters are great for added support and comfort, and both of these can also be used to build a meditation seat.

The most popular yoga props—blocks, straps, blankets, and bolsters—are all generally made available in yoga studios. In studio classes, you can expect the teacher to alert you before the class starts if you’ll need props. And even if the teacher doesn’t specify this, you can usually go ahead and get the props you’d like to practice with. If you choose to develop a home practice, you may find that it’s worth investing in your own props.

What to Wear to a Beginner Yoga Class

When you practice yoga, wear what’s comfortable for you. (While this goes without saying, we want to emphasize the point!) A good rule of thumb is to pick clothing that allows freedom of movement without making you self-conscious; no one wants to worry about a shirt bunching up in their face when there are so many other things happening in a downward dog!

Snug yoga pants with a top that fits your body but is not uncomfortably tight is usually a good choice. And don’t worry about shoes—you’ll go barefoot on the mat.

If you’re worried about the temperature in the studio, or if you tend to get overheated from your practice, try layering. Add a loose top that can easily be taken off or put back on.

Going to Your First Beginner Yoga Class

It’s natural to be curious or even a little hesitant before taking your first beginner yoga class. Keeping the following tips in mind as you head to a studio for the first time can help to make your experience less stressful, and thus more enjoyable.

• Make sure you’ve picked a class for beginners! A yoga class for beginners will include alignment advice and move at a comfortable or slower pace.

• Arrive about fifteen minutes early and, if possible, speak to the teacher beforehand. Let them know you’re new. If you have any injuries or concerns, before class starts is a great time to discuss them with the teacher. This conversation will also give you a good feel for the teacher, and allow you time to adjust to the space.

• Wait to buy a yoga mat until you’ve tried a few classes and have decided to commit to a regular practice. Most yoga studios will have mats for you to borrow, but it’s best to ask ahead of time—just to make sure, before showing up matless.

• Choose a spot where you can easily see the teacher demonstrate the poses, and be sure you have the space you need.

Overcoming Anxieties About Yoga Practice

If you don't feel ready to enter the studio just yet, you may want to try out some beginner yoga poses at home. Luckily, there are thousands of articles and tutorials on the web. Watch a few “yoga for beginners” videos in your spare time to practice these poses at home before going to a group class—it’s a great way to overcome any nervousness or hesitation you may have about taking a beginner yoga class.

My Yoga Life Journey

Yoga is a way of life, one that I have been on for many years. It has brought me many benefits, both physically and mentally.

I first started practicing yoga in my early twenties. I was looking for a way to improve my flexibility and strength, and I was also interested in learning more about Eastern philosophy. I found that yoga was the perfect way to meet both of my goals

As I continued to practice yoga, I began to notice a number of positive changes in my life. My flexibility and strength improved, of course, but I also found that I was less stressed and more focused. I was also sleeping better and feeling more energetic.

Yoga has also helped me to develop a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. The practice of yoga has taught me to be more mindful and present in the moment. It has also helped me to cultivate compassion and understanding for others.

I am grateful for the many gifts that yoga has given me. It is a practice that I will continue to cherish for the rest of my life

About Journey Through Life Yoga & Wellness

Journey Through Life Yoga and Wellness offers yoga and mindfulness practices to support your health and well-being as you travel the path through the different phases of your life.  Regardless of where your journey started or where you ultimately end up there will inevitably be times of change and transition in both your life circumstances and physical body. The challenge of coping and dealing with change and transition can often contribute to stress and compromise your physical and emotional health and overall sense of well being.

Yoga, meditation and breath work are tools that encourage and enhance self care.  They can help us develop an awareness of the relationship between the outer landscape of our physical body and the inner landscape of our thoughts and emotions.  Traditionally thought of as separate entities, there has been much research to suggest that our thoughts, emotions, beliefs and habits play an integral role in our physical health and vice-versa.  When we allow the inner and outer landscapes to inform each other this can lead to a greater sense of overall physical and emotional balance.

For individuals living with a medical condition such as cancer, chronic pain syndrome or arthritis, navigating each day can be even more challenging.  These practices are well suited to complement conventional medical treatments to improve physical function and enhance well being *

Our physical function, mood and outlook can improve by moving and engaging our bodies.   In practicing the physical poses of yoga we build strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and coordination.  These, in turn, improve posture and mobility leading to increased vitality and greater physical confidence.

Engaging in breath and meditation practices helps to calm our minds and emotions, allowing us to be in the present moment.  This mindful awareness can build emotional resilience to help manage the stress and anxiety we inevitably encounter in our everyday lives.   When we are calm, things become clearer. We create an environment where the subtle whispers of our inner being - heart and soul - can be heard.

A  journey is simply traveling to one place from another.  When you plan a vacation destination, you likely invest time and energy into research and planning, right down to how efficiently you pack your suitcase.  The truth is, you travel to and from multiple times in your everyday life. Whether to and from the grocery store, across continents, through expected life stage journeys, or those you could never imagine nor would ever choose to traverse, you are well traveled.

The question is, “How well do you travel?”

*Yoga and Mindfulness practices offered at Journey Through Life Yoga @ Wellness™ are not intended to nor should they be a replacement for any medical advice, intervention or therapy that has been prescribed by your healthcare provider.  You should inform your provider of your intention to begin a new or change an existing wellness/fitness practice.

‘Europe has an extraordinary culture of nudity’: Where and why to try a naked yoga retreat

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit four years ago, many of us were focussed on just getting through the often unsettling time. That wasn’t the case for Matt - a yoga teacher better known as the Bearded Naked Yogi .

While online quizzes and baking sourdough bread were the activities du jour, Matt was bringing his unique brand of yoga to a wider audience.

“I have always practised naked yoga by myself and was encouraged by friends to share my practice via social media to help inspire people during those strange and troublesome times,” he tells Euronews Travel.

Since 2020, Matt has been teaching yoga - while fully naked - both online and across Europe and beyond.

It’s his mission to promote the ancient practice while encouraging people to be comfortable in their own skin, whether clothed or otherwise.

We spoke to him about the transformative power of naked yoga and how curious travellers can join his retreats in Europe.

How could a naked yoga retreat help to free your mind?

“The practice of naked yoga is as old as yoga itself (it's known as Nagna Yoga in Sanskrit), and has a long tradition within the philosophy; it is seen as the ultimate renunciation of oneself; the discarding of clothes as signifiers of the ego and a false identity,” Matt tells Euronews Travel.

Years ago, he explains, wandering Yogis of the Indian subcontinent were well known worldwide: “Nude as the day they were born and very much absorbed into a spiritual tradition that has been continuous for thousands of years.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Matt (@thebeardednakedyogi)

However, the perception of nudity has shifted over the years.

“I think the shame and hypersexualisation that has been created around the human body in recent times is shocking and damaging,” Matt says.

While we’re unlikely to see wandering, naked Yogis on our travels, Matt says getting back to the core reasons behind practising naked yoga is still possible.

“The majority of my students come for the naked aspect, though this year I have been successfully expanding my teaching practice to include clothed classes - I always say ‘if you want to practise naked or if you want to practise clothed, the important thing is - we practise’," Matt says.

Wellness tourism is booming but what's behind the trend?

Ukraine's yogis breathe through wartime blackouts

“The overwhelming majority of people who come and practise naked for the first time soon ask themselves why they had never done so before!” PULL QUOTE

On retreats from England’s Cornish coast to Malaga in Spain, Matt tends to teach restorative types of yoga, like Hatha and Vinyasa, as well as meditation classes - all of which can be undertaken naked or clothed, depending on individual preference.

With society’s attitude to nudity as rigid as it currently is, Matt says he’s not surprised when potential clients are reluctant to strip off for a yoga class.

“I receive a lot of messages from people who want to practise naked but have hang ups or feel nervous; they want to experience the many benefits, such as increased awareness of the body, a greater sense of love for their body, but they are nervous,” he says.

In response, he tries to explain the history of the discipline and how nudity is nothing to be ashamed of.

“I always offer words of encouragement and support and highlight, in particular, that practising naked yoga is not a sexual thing, nor is the sharing of social nudity - it's a natural way of being,” Matt says.

Where can you try naked yoga in Europe?

As well as welcoming people from across the world to his online sessions, Matt also teaches at naked yoga retreats globally. This year, he’ll be running classes everywhere from the UK to Turkey to Bali in Indonesia.

“It's a very nomadic life and one that I enjoy very much - it is a great joy to be able to meet people from many different countries, coming together as one to enjoy our practise, sharing social nudity and forging new friendships,” he says.

With a wide breadth of knowledge of attitudes to nudity, Matt says Europe as a whole is more accepting than many other locations.

While, he says, “naked yoga - as with any style of yoga - can be practised anywhere there is enough space for a mat”, Matt says that, in his experience, “Europe has an extraordinary culture of nudity and it really varies from country to country.”

In 2014, Munich legalised full nudity in six designated areas of the city. The naturist areas are all located in parkland, giving them a degree of seclusion - but none of them are hidden away from the general public.

In the UK, France, Croatia and the Netherlands, there are a wide selection of nude beaches, open to naturists and the public alike.

In Spain, public nudity has been legal since 1988, meaning that anyone can walk naked down a street without fear of arrest, although some regions like Valladolid and Barcelona have introduced their own laws to regulate nudism - especially away from the beach where it’s seen as more socially acceptable.

“Laws around nudity vary from place to place, especially in respect of nudist beaches for example; but, from a personal perspective, the Canary Islands have an amazing acceptance of nudity, with more nudist beaches than anywhere else in Europe,” Matt says.

‘It's a journey that will transform your life for the better’

“The journey into naked yoga is a deeply personal one - people bring themselves to the experience and all of us are different,” Matt explains.

No matter what an individual’s journey to the end goal of naked yoga looks like, though, he believes everyone can benefit from letting go.

“The most amazing thing about the joining of naturism and yoga in the practice of naked yoga is that both practices have broadly the same ‘aims’ - increased awareness of oneself, a better connection with the body and mind and a liberation from the impositions of society's expectations upon us,” Matt says.

While he finds it hard to define the transformative nature of naked yoga, he says the theme running through the majority is “simple and very honest: ‘I feel better about myself and more connected to who I am’.”

His advice for those of us unsure about diving into the world of yoga - let alone with no clothes on?

“People are often nervous about starting yoga, let alone naked yoga, and I would always encourage someone to just try it - you don't have to be perfect, you don't need to be flexible, you just need to have a willingness to try and to enjoy the journey that you're on - it's a journey that will transform your life for the better.”

Where will your Freedom Journey lead you?

Through yoga, I believe we can begin to taste what it feels like to cut loose from those mental ropes that bind us so. We focus on ourselves in a deeper way, becoming the Witness to what we observe within ourselves and within our bodies. We then create deeper connections in our relationships and in our communities, and then our earth, and the Universe.

When we add to the yoga the glorious adventure of travel and retreat from our daily lives, a whole new level of liberation takes place. We have the opportunity to connect with people from other cultures, with nature, and we experience different food and activities, all of which adds to our perspective and broadens that deep feeling of being so very present, and so very alive!
