There are many reasons to add a portable keyboard to your packing list. Perhaps you’re a frequent flier who ditched a laptop in favor of a tablet or smartphone, and you miss the typing speed and accuracy afforded by a proper keyboard. Or you’re a hybrid worker or regular commuter who wants to be able to use the same, familiar keyboard everywhere you go. Portable keyboards are usually wireless, which make them extra versatile: you can connect to multiple devices (sometimes simultaneously) and use them at a distance from your screen for correct positioning and comfort.

When shopping, consider compactness (like 60- or 65-percent-sized keyboards or foldable options that can fit in a backpack pocket), device compatibility, and battery life. Portable keyboards also need to be durable enough to survive life on the road. To help you in your search, we’ve rounded up eight options ranging from the best ultra-slim devices to those made specifically for your favorite tablet.

Best Overall

Logitech wireless illuminated keyboard.

This keyboard is ergonomically shaped for faster and more accurate typing, offers smart backlighting, and can connect to three devices at once.

If your device isn’t Bluetooth enabled, you’ll need to buy a separate USB receiver before you can connect.

The pro-level Logitech MX Keys Mini Minimalist Illuminated Wireless Keyboard is the ideal solution for somebody who frequently has to set up a home office on the go. It’s compatible with all Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Linux, ChromeOS, and Android devices as long as they have Bluetooth Low Energy Technology — and, if not, you can buy a compatible Logi Bolt USB Receiver separately. The keyboard offers a 33-foot wireless range, can connect to up to three devices simultaneously with easy transitioning between them.

The user experience is a highlight thanks to the spherical fingertip dishes on each key. This promotes typing speed and accuracy with very little noise. Use the smart Fn keys to send emojis, mute and unmute your mic, or activate dictation; functions that can be customized using the keyboard’s free app. The backlight uses a hand proximity sensor and also adjusts automatically to the amount of ambient light. This helps to preserve the USB-C rechargeable battery, which lasts up to 10 days or up to five months with the backlight switched off.

The keyboard is also compatible with the Logitech Flow-enabled mouse , has a reputation for travel-proof durability, and comes in four colors: black, graphite, pale gray, or rose.

The Details: 11.7 x 5.2 x 0.82 inches | 1.1 pounds | Bluetooth Low Energy Technology | USB-C rechargeable Li-Po 1500mAH battery | Backlight

Best for iPad

Apple magic keyboard folio for ipad (10th generation).

The folio doubles as an adjustable stand and protective back panel for your device.

The keyboard’s lack of backlighting makes it difficult to use in low-light conditions.

The Magic Keyboard Folio essentially transforms your iPad into a laptop. The clever, two-piece design consists of a detachable keyboard and a protective back panel that doubles as an adjustable stand for comfortable typing on any flat surface like a hotel desk or airplane tray table. Both connect magnetically to your iPad and can be used together or separately.

Since the keyboard draws a charge from your iPad, it will work for as long as the latter is powered up and there’s no pairing required. Scissor mechanism keys with 1 millimeter of travel offer tactile, accurate typing while the click-anywhere trackpad supports the iPadOS cursor and multi-touch gestures. You can use the 14-key function row to control everything from screen brightness to volume. And, while this version only works with the tenth generation iPad, there’s a similar product for the (sixth generation) iPad Pro as well.

The Details: 10.2 x 7.7 x 0.9 inches | Bluetooth | USB-C pass-through charging

Best for Galaxy Tablet

Fintie keyboard case.

This sturdy, polycarbonate keyboard case offers impressive versatility and serves the dual purpose of protecting your tablet while you travel.

The keyboard doesn’t have a backlight and is only compatible with each specific Galaxy model.

Designed exclusively for the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ 11-inch model, this Fintie keyboard case is a specialist product (although there are versions available for other Galaxy models ). It consists of a premium, shock-absorbent polycarbonate case that doubles as a handy viewing stand and a detachable, slimline keyboard. The keyboard has hard, laptop-style keys operated by a spring mechanism that encourages tactile speed and accuracy. The only downside is that there’s no backlight.

This portable keyboard can be fully detached from the magnetic case and used freely within a 33-foot range using Bluetooth Low Energy Technology. Expect up to 230 hours of uninterrupted usage, with up to 180 days of standby battery life. When the battery finally runs down, you can recharge easily using the included micro USB cable. The laptop stand is a highlight, too, with three built-in grooves to facilitate adjustable viewing angles whether you’re lounging on your vacation rental couch or sitting upright in the office.

The Details: 11.4 x 8.2 x 1.5 inches | 1.7 pounds | Bluetooth Low Energy Technology | Micro USB rechargeable battery

Best Folding

Samsers foldable bluetooth keyboard.

This keyboard offers exceptional functionality while folding down to the size of your palm for ultimate packability.

The battery life is significantly shorter than some of the other options on this list, although it should still last for the duration of a three-day trip.

If portability is your top priority, you’ll love the Samsers Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard. Although larger than most of the other options on this list when opened, it’s made suitable for travel by a tri-fold feature supported by seamless, magnetically locking metal hinges. When folded, it fits in your palm for easy storage in a laptop backpack or carry-on suitcase. The keyboard uses Bluetooth, can connect to up to three devices simultaneously, and is compatible with Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android systems (meaning you’ll only need to pack one keyboard to meet all your tech needs) and will work with any travel tablet .

With scissor-switch keys, the keyboard is built for tactile responsiveness. It even offers an integrated trackpad that supports multi-touch and mouse functions for an impressive set-up, even in a temporary setting. Other notable features include a non-slip PU leather base and an included velvet carry pouch and phone stand. The built-in battery is rechargeable via the included USB-C cable and lasts for up to 70 hours, or 120 days on standby.

The Details: 13.5 x 4.5 x 0.4 inches (open), 7.3 x 4.5 x 0.7 inches (folded) | 9.3 ounces | Bluetooth | USB-C rechargeable battery

Best With Number Pad

Protoarc keyboard.

This folding keyboard offers 105 responsive scissor-switch keys including a dedicated number pad.

It’s one of the largest keyboards on this list when open, which is something to bear in mind if you have limited desk space.

The ProtoArc XK01 Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard is the ideal solution for those with jobs that involve inputting a lot of numbers. It offers a full 105-key layout complete with a dedicated number pad. It also has a scissor-switch mechanism that’s quiet enough not to disturb others on your next red-eye flight. The keyboard is also built for travel, being slim and lightweight with a clever tri-fold design. The latter is built to last for more than 13 years of regular use or approximately 100,000 folds.

Bluetooth Low Energy Technology allows the keyboard to connect to three devices simultaneously, with dedicated keys for seamless switching. Whichever operating system you use (Windows, MacOS, Android, or iOS), this keyboard is compatible with a wireless operating distance of up to 33 feet. The Li-Po battery will last up to six months on standby and can be recharged using the included USB-C cable.

The Details: 15.2 x 4.7 x 0.5 inches (expanded), 8.5 x 4.7 x 0.8 inches (folded) | 10.5 ounces | Bluetooth Low Energy Technology | Rechargeable Li-Po 210 mAh battery

Best With Touchpad

Omoton foldable bluetooth keyboard.

This keyboard includes a touchpad that supports cursor and multi-touch gestures for iOS, Android, and Windows devices.

There’s no backlight, and the battery life is relatively short compared to other models on this list.

Can’t live without the precision offered by a touchpad, or wish to save space by leaving your mouse at home? The Omoton Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard includes an integrated touchpad that works with iOS, Android, and Windows operating systems to enable cursor and multi-touch gesture controls. The scissor-switch keys offer quiet, tactile responsiveness, while the fact that the keyboard folds to just-larger-than-a-smartphone size is a major plus for those with limited packing space. It’s also one of the lightest options on this list.

The keyboard uses Bluetooth to connect to up to three devices at the same time. When you want to switch between them, just use the dedicated Fn buttons. The battery is rechargeable using the included USB-C cable, and just two hours of charging provides up to 40 hours of continuous typing. To save battery, the keyboard reverts to standby mode after 10 minutes of activity and also turns off automatically when folded.

The Details: 11.9 x 3.8 x 0.4 inches (expanded), 5.9 x 3.8 x 0.7 inches (folded) | 9.1 ounces | Bluetooth | USB-C rechargeable battery

Logitech Pebble 2 Combo

This modern, minimalist set looks good and performs even better, with two ways to connect to up to three devices at a time.

Both the keyboard and the mouse require disposable batteries.

For a complete home-away-from-home office setup, consider the Logitech Pebble 2 Combo. It includes a slim, lightweight keyboard and mouse in matching rose, white, or graphite. The set uses Bluetooth Low Energy Technology to connect to up to three devices at a time, with a 33-foot wireless range and multi-operating system compatibility. If your device doesn’t offer Bluetooth Low Energy Technology but does have a USB-A port, you can use the included Logi Bolt USB Receiver instead.

Scooped, low-profile keys with Silent Touch Technology ensure a rewarding typing experience. Use the LogiOptions+ app to customize the shortcuts offered by the keyboard’s 10 Fn keys. Meanwhile, the mouse offers left- and right-click buttons as well as a scroll wheel with middle click capability. Expect high-precision optical tracking and the ability to adjust the DPI from 400 to 4,000 for customized acceleration and sensitivity. Both the keyboard and the mouse are battery operated, but offer approximately 36 months and 24 months of battery life respectively.

The Details: 11 x 4.9 x 0.6 inches (keyboard), 4.2 x 2.3 x 1.1 inches (mouse) | 14.6 ounces (keyboard), 2.7 ounces (mouse) | Bluetooth or Logi Bolt USB Receiver | 2 AAA batteries (keyboard), 1 AA battery (mouse)

Arteck Universal Keyboard

In addition to its  ultra-slim build, this keyboard offers backlighting in not just one but seven different colors.

You will only be able to connect to one device at a time.

Those that like to travel as light as possible will appreciate the ultra-slim build of the Arteck HB030B keyboard. At 0.24 inches in width and just 5.9 ounces in weight, it’s the thinnest and lightest model on this list. It’s easily slipped into your laptop case or backpack for easy transport both to and around your destination. An anodized zinc alloy back shell pairs with an ABS plastic front panel for decent durability, too.

One of our favorite features is the backlight, which makes it possible to type without disturbing your airline cabin mates or spouse who prefers to sleep in on vacation. You can choose from seven soft LED colors and two brightness levels. The keyboard uses Bluetooth to connect to iOS, Android, MacOS, and Windows devices, with quiet scissor-switch keys including dedicated shortcut keys for Windows users. The rechargeable Li-Po battery lasts up to six months on a single charge (based on the backlight being off and two hours of continuous use per day).

The Details: 9.7 x 5.9 x 0.2 inches | 5.9 ounces | Bluetooth | Rechargeable Li-Po battery | Backlight

Tips for Buying Portable Keyboards

Look for the keyboard size and the key size.

Standard full-size keyboards measure around 17 inches in length, making them impractical for travel even though they are the preferred option for many people at home because of the full functionality offered by having all 104 keys, including a full number pad and function keys. Smaller options include tenkeyless or TKL keyboards (full-size keyboards without a number pad, which measure approximately 14 inches in length) and 75 percent, 65 percent, and 60 percent keyboards.

The most popular layout for a portable keyboard is 60 percent, because it’s compact at roughly 11 inches in length. However, with just 61 keys on average, you’ll be sacrificing a number pad, function row, and arrow keys. This loss of functionality may be worth it for those that travel a lot and have no need for these keys; however, professionals who regularly input a lot of numbers, gamers, or those who intend to use their keyboard full-time may prefer to stick with one of the larger keyboard sizes.

Buying a separate number pad, touchpad, or mouse is also an option for those that need them but want to keep their main keyboard small. Typically, travel-sized keyboards simply use less keys, rather than using smaller keys in order to maintain typing accuracy.

Make sure it works with your devices

The majority of portable keyboards use Bluetooth or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to connect to your device. You’ll need to check that your device is enabled for the necessary technology. This should be clear from your device’s product description or user manual; if not, most keyboards offer specs that list the operating systems and specific models that they are compatible with. If your device isn’t Bluetooth- or BLE-enabled look for a keyboard that offers a USB receiver or dongle connection instead. Again, you’ll need to make sure that your device has the appropriate port (or adapter) required to connect. Tablet keyboards are typically specific to a certain model, so be sure to purchase the one that’s made for yours.

All of the keyboards on this list use Bluetooth or BLE technology to connect to your device. Benefits of these technologies include longer battery life and the ability to connect to any device that’s Bluetooth or BLE enabled, even if it doesn’t have a USB port. However, if you have an older device that doesn’t support these technologies but does have a USB port, a 2.4 gHz wireless USB receiver or dongle is another option.

Gamers often prefer a 2.4 gHz receiver since it offers a more reliable connection with none of the latency issues that can affect Bluetooth pairings. It should be noted that this slight lag rarely affects other users. Finally, it is possible to find a portable laptop with a wired connection. Again, you’ll need to make sure your device has the correct kind of USB port; if not, you will need to buy an adapter.

Many portable keyboards are powered by an internal lithium battery that can be recharged via a USB cable plugged into your laptop, portable charger , or a regular outlet. Some keyboards use disposable batteries, while tablet keyboards often draw charge directly from the tab itself. If battery life is a primary concern, look for keyboard models with charge-saving features such as an automatic sleep mode or an on/off button. Backlighting is handy if you often work in low-light conditions but it does drain battery quickly. Choosing a model with sensor-activated backlighting or backlighting that can be dimmed or turned off is a good way to mitigate this.

The short answer is yes, you can bring a portable keyboard on the plane. Regardless of which size you go for, it should fit comfortably in your carry-on luggage or backpack (just be sure to pack it carefully to avoid damage.) Policies differ from one airline to the next, but the Federal Aviation Administration says that devices containing non-removable lithium batteries should be packed in personal item bags rather than checked bags, so bear that in mind if it applies to your keyboard.

You should only use the keyboard at times when flight-safe electronics are permitted to be switched on. Besides, the fact that tray tables have to be stowed during take-off and landing would make it tricky to use a keyboard during these stages of the flight anyway.

Mechanical keyboards make typing a fantastic experience, but not every keyboard is easy to carry around. These seven options are a great place to start if you're looking for a mechanical keyboard that's also ultraportable.

UPDATE: 3/10/23

If you haven't used a mechanical keyboard before, you may wonder what the hype is about. There are many reasons why you should choose one over a membrane keyboard or your laptop's built-in version.

Mechanical keyboards are customizable to your personal preferences. You can choose the way it looks, sounds, and feels. Customization is just one of many benefits of mechanical options compared to membrane models, such as greater durability and build quality.

Choosing your first keyboard can be challenging, especially if you are new to mechanical versions. It is an understatement to say there are many options. It boils down to a few elements: sound, feel, and features.

  • Switches : In a mechanical keyboard, switches will determine your typing experience, so those are the most important items to prioritize. There are three main kinds: linear, tactile, and clicky. Linear switches are the quietest and don't have a noticeable tactile bump. Tactile switches have a bump you can feel while you type, but they aren't too loud. Clicky switches have an evident clicking noise and a tactile bump.
  • Hot Swap : Arguably the most desirable feature in any mechanical keyboard is "hot swap" capability. This means you can change the switches and swap them out for any others you want. You have to watch out with budget and off-brand keyboards---they are often only swappable with certain brands, such as Outemu. True hot swappable keyboards will be compatible with mechanical switches from any company.
  • Ergonomics : Next, one often-overlooked feature of a good mechanical keyboard to consider is comfort and ergonomics. This is important to note since an estimated 60% of Americans deal with chronic pain every day, many of which involve limited use of hands and fingers like arthritis and carpal tunnel. If you spend a lot of time typing, you could risk developing or exacerbating an issue like this due to repetitive muscle strain. A mechanical keyboard can be customized to be comfortable for long-term use, so you can do all the typing you need without having cramped fingers and wrists.
  • Design : Other features that you should look for in a mechanical keyboard include RGB backlighting, customizable backlighting, wired or wireless functionality, and size. These come down to personal preference. Some people might not care about backlighting, while it will be a must for others. Similarly, the keyboard's size is also totally subjective. We will be focusing on smaller size keyboards that are more portable.

No matter the features you are looking for, there is a great portable mechanical keyboard for you. These top seven include great options for all types of users while prioritizing portability.

The Logitech MX Mechanical Mini is a fantastic choice if you're looking for an all-around comfortable mechanical typing experience that isn't too loud and fits easily in your bag. This is a particularly great option if you want to use your mechanical keyboard in the office---it has a clean, professional look and isn't too noisy.

The low-profile keys make the Mechanical Mini super comfortable to type on, although it's not for everyone. However, this could be the perfect keyboard for you if you're worried about wrist strain. It is important to note that the keycaps and switches are hot-swappable.

Logitech MX Mechanical Mini Wireless Illuminated Keyboard

A great portable keyboard for almost any situation.

You don't have to spend much money to get into mechanical keyboards. The MageGee MK-Box 60% is a $30 mechanical keyboard with two different switch options, single-color backlighting, and a portable form factor. This is a great place to start if you're just starting with mechanical keyboards. You can try one out without losing much money if you don't like it or want different switches.

The switches are not hot-swappable, but you can choose between clicky blue or linear red versions. Plus, the keycaps are swappable. You can choose your own keycaps if you ever decide to do a little bit of beginner customization.

Portable 60% Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, MageGee MK-Box LED Backlit Compact 68 Keys Mini Wired Office Keyboard

An affordable portable mechanical keyboard for everyone.

If you are interested in building your own custom portable mechanical keyboard, it's hard to beat a Drop kit. The Drop + OLKB Planck keyboard kit is the perfect base for an ultra-compact keyboard. It slashes off the number pad, function keys, and even the top number row to minimize the size as much as possible.

Drop has plenty of resources for building a custom keyboard using this kit. It already comes with almost everything you need, though. You have to choose your switches and keycaps and pop them in. The fun part is, you can completely customize your keyboard to make it exactly the way you want it. Conveniently, Drop also offers a travel case designed explicitly for Planck-sized keyboards, which is great for protecting your custom build on the go.

DROP + OLKB PLANCK MECHANICAL KEYBOARD KIT V6

The ideal portable mechanical keyboard for DIYers.

Backlighting is an awesome feature to have in a mechanical keyboard, and you shouldn't have to give it up to have a portable size. The HK Gaming GK61 is a great option for a compact keyboard with great backlighting features that also don't break the bank.

The GK61 comes with Gateron optical switches. It is hot-swappable, but you can only swap for other optical versions. It has a 60% layout and all the keys you need while easily fitting in most backpacks. The backlighting is full RGB with full customization, which is fantastic for a keyboard that's less than $100. It's compatible with both Mac and PC, as well.

HK GAMING GK61 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

A portable mechanical keyboard that will please the eye.

The SteelSeries Apex 7 TKL is one of the best keyboards on this list---it is incredibly thin, includes full RGB backlighting, and features gaming-level performance. Plus, it has a magnetic wrist rest for extra comfort for those long typing sessions. You can also choose the switches your keyboard comes with without DIY customization.

Going with a wired mechanical keyboard means you don't need to worry about messing with any wireless Bluetooth settings. You can simply plug in and get rolling. Wired keyboards are also faster, which is a good feature to have if you want to use your portable keyboard for gaming.

SteelSeries Apex 7 TKL Compact Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

If you prefer a hardwired connection, the Apex 7 is for you.

If you have extra money to spend on a fancy keyboard with some unnecessary but admittedly cool bonus features, take a look at the Ficihp Mechanical Keyboard . This unique keyboard has a built-in external display that you can use as an extension of your computer's screen. It's even a touch screen---and way bigger than that little touch bar on Mac laptops.

Conveniently, a case is included right out of the box, so you can easily protect your high-end keyboard. The Ficihp is hot-swappable, as well, and features a keycap and switch puller in case you do decide to dabble in some DIY customization.

Ficihp Mechanical Keyboard, Built-in 12.6 Inch Touchscreen

If you have the extra cash, this portable mechanical keyboard is hard to beat.

Those who want a timeless typing experience should try out the 7KEYS TW1867 , a typewriter-style mechanical keyboard. It has classic round keycaps and hot-swappable switches. There's also built-in backlighting and a convenient stand where the paper would go on a real typewriter.

You can use this to stand up your tablet or phone, so the TW1867 is particularly useful if you want to type on those devices. This is a Bluetooth keyboard, so you don't have to worry about any wires getting in the way on the go.

7KEYS Electric Typewriter Vintage with Upgraded Mechanical Bluetooth 5.0

This typewriter-themed mechanical keyboard travels in style.

Everyone has different needs and preferences, but that's the beauty of mechanical keyboards. There is so much variety and room for customization that you can get exactly what you want. The perfect keyboard doesn't have to be bulky, either. These examples are proof that they can be portable, too.

The best wireless travel keyboards for phones and tablets

While it’s unlikely to be your first choice, your humble smartphone can work if you need to quickly set up a writing or work station in a cafe or on the train. With smartphone display sizes almost reaching an almighty 7 inches — the same size as a small tablet of yesteryear — it’s clear they have the room to accommodate a decent writing app, and with specs rivaling laptops, they have the power, too. But what they don’t have is an easy-to-use keyboard. On-screen keyboards are good, and even QWERTY phones have their dedicated users, but if you really want to get some typing done well and fast, you need a separate keyboard.

Logitech K480 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard

Jelly comb foldable bluetooth keyboard with touchpad, zagg pocket foldable bluetooth keyboard, anker slim bluetooth keyboard, sungwoo rollable silicone bluetooth keyboard.

But you can’t just drag a full-sized keyboard around with you on the off chance you’ll get a chance to do some typing. What you need is a portable, wireless keyboard that doesn’t take up too much room and is always ready to go. So whether you’re typing up a screenplay or the next New York Times bestseller, or you just need to get some work done, here are the best wireless travel keyboards for smartphones.

Looking for a Bluetooth keyboard that’s a little larger? Check out our list of the best wireless keyboards .

Logitech is an accessory king, and that’s why the K480 keyboard is at the top of our list. It’s slim, lightweight, and very portable, but the star feature here is the adaptable triple-device switch. Pair your keyboard with up to three devices, and you can quickly swap between them with the handy switch. This makes it the keyboard to beat if you’re looking to use your keyboard on a number of phones or tablets. A long channel at the top offers a stand for your device, and Logitech boasts a two-year battery life. On the minus side, it doesn’t roll or fold, which makes it harder to justify if you’re going to be traveling a lot. But even with that in mind, this is an excellent device.

The folding keyboard is a mainstay for travel, and while they tend to lose the stable feeling you get from a rigid keyboard, the additional portability is often worth it. This keyboard from Jelly Comb is one of the best examples of a folding keyboard we’ve seen, largely because it takes advantage of the build to add a highly-useful touchpad. It’s made from aluminum, so it should stay safe in your bag, and the built-in rechargeable battery has a claimed 560-hour battery life. Unfortunately, the touchpad doesn’t work with iOS devices, and there’s no stand for your device, but this is still a great choice.

Zagg’s Pocket provides a great all-in-one option for those who want a foldable keyboard with a stand. Folding into a 9-inch-long rectangle, the Zagg Pocket keyboard can easily be stowed into a bag when not in use, and the folds of hard plastic help to keep the more vulnerable parts safe. Magnets help to keep it closed and turn it off, and when it’s open, the stand is large enough to accommodate anything from a smartphone to a large tablet. Zagg claims a lifespan of two years between charges, but expect that to be shorter if you use it a lot, and best of all, it comes at a fairly reasonable price.

Simple, sleek, and effective — three words that describe Anker’s slim keyboard very well. Sure, it doesn’t fold like some of the keyboards on this list, it doesn’t swap between multiple devices, and it doesn’t have a built-in stand, but there’s a certain honesty to Anker’s keyboard. It’s a keyboard, and that’s what it does. It’s well-priced and has a three-month battery life (with an estimated two hours of use per day, so your mileage may vary), making this a great simple keyboard for anyone who isn’t fussed by folding or other extra features.

There was a short period of time when rolling keyboards were all the rage, but that moment has sadly passed. Thankfully, it’s left us with the Sungwoo rolling keyboard. Unroll this keyboard, and you’re treated to a full keyboard experience, including a number pad — which isn’t something we’re used to on travel keyboards. The keys are whisper-quiet, and the silicone build means it’s dust-proof and waterproof, making it an excellent choice for adventurers or just those caught out in the rain. Sure, you won’t get the clack you’re used to, but this is certainly a passable keyboard that you can roll up and take away with you.

Skype is an excellent option for video chats with your friends and family or conducting a videoconference call with your colleagues.  However, Skype is not without its bugs, hiccups, and issues that can make getting face-to-face with someone seem like an ordeal. To make things easier on everyone, we've compiled a selection of the most common Skype problems and how to fix them. Video not working If you can't get your camera to work or experience issues seeing other's connections, you might as well be using an actual telephone instead of Skype. Thankfully, these issues can usually be resolved with a bit of tinkering on your end, or they may just be service disruptions on Skype's end.

One of the more common problems that crop up is visual issues due to Skype not having access to your PC or phone's camera. For desktop users, open the Skype application and select the Three horizontal dots near the notification bell icon to access the Skype menu. Select Settings > Audio and video. If your picture fails to appear in the Skype camera preview window, you'll know there's a connection issue.

While the spotlight always seems to be on Apple’s mainline iPhones, the iPhone SE is a great pick for those who are on a budget. If you want an iPhone that doesn't break the bank, the SE is the way to go.

The original iPhone SE came out in 2016, and then Apple revamped it in 2020 and 2022 by giving it some more modern hardware. The iPhone SE tends to get updated every two or so years rather than annually like the traditional iPhone. This means  that we should see a new iPhone SE 4 this year, but it’s not so cut-and-dried with this particular model.

There are no limitations to the learning and creativity of children, and a tablet will help them develop their knowledge and skills like no other gadget can. Factors to Consider when Choosing a Travel Keyboard

When choosing a travel keyboard, there are several factors to consider.

First, consider the type of keyboard you prefer, whether it’s wireless, portable, or Bluetooth.

Next, consider the size and weight of the keyboard, as you’ll want something compact and lightweight for easy transportation.

Additionally, ergonomics are essential for comfortable typing, and compatibility with your devices and long battery life should also be considered.

Type of keyboard (wireless, portable, Bluetooth, etc.)

When it comes to portability, compact keyboards are the way to go. These lightweight and slim keyboards make them easy to carry in your luggage.

Wireless keyboards offer the freedom to move around without being tethered to your device, while Bluetooth keyboards allow for easy connectivity with multiple devices.

Logitech keyboards, like the MX Keys Mini, are popular choices for travel due to their compact size and reliable performance.

For those seeking versatility, a universal keyboard that can connect to different devices, such as laptops, tablets, or smartphones, may be the ideal choice.

Size and weight

Consider the overall size and weight of the keyboard. As a freedom-seeking individual, you want a keyboard that won’t weigh you down or take up too much space in your bag.

Opt for a portable keyboard that’s compact and lightweight. A compact wireless keyboard with Bluetooth technology allows for a wireless connection to your device, allowing you to work or play wherever you go.

Additionally, some keyboards come with a built-in mouse, eliminating the need for an extra peripheral.

As a savvy traveler, you want to ensure comfort and ease of use when selecting a keyboard, so prioritize ergonomics and functionality.

An ergonomic keyboard is essential for long hours of typing without straining your hands and wrists. Look for a compact keyboard designed with a comfortable layout and adjustable tilt, allowing you to find the perfect position for your hands.

Consider a travel keyboard and mouse combo for added convenience. Another critical factor is the wireless range, as you want to use your keyboard from a comfortable distance.

Compatibility with devices

Consider the compatibility of the device you plan to use it with. Not all keyboards are compatible with every device, so it’s important to do your research.

Here are some factors to consider when assessing compatibility:

  • Connection Options: Look for keyboards with Bluetooth and USB connectivity options. This way, you can use the keyboard with a variety of devices, whether they’ve Bluetooth capabilities or not.
  • Device Compatibility: Check if the keyboard is specifically designed to work with your device. For example, the Logitech MX Keys Mini and Logitech K Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard are compatible with various devices, including laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
  • Operating System: Ensure that the keyboard supports the operating system of your device. For instance, the Omoton Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard is compatible with iOS, Android, and Windows.
  • Wireless vs. Wired: Decide whether you prefer a travel wireless keyboard or a wired one. Options like the K Multi-Device Wireless Keyboard from Logitech offer the freedom of wireless connectivity.

Battery life

Battery life is a crucial factor to consider. You want a keyboard that can last for hours without needing to be charged. This way, you can work or play freely without worrying about it dying on you.

Look for keyboards with a built-in rechargeable battery or that can be powered via  USB . Some models offer the option to connect via Bluetooth , saving battery life by eliminating the need for a USB connection.

Consider if you need additional features like a number pad or a mouse.

The 5 Best Keyboards for Travel and Remote Work

Dave Dean

Laptops and tablets let us work from anywhere in the world, whether that’s a co-working space, coffee shop, or airport lounge. Working for long hours hunched over a device is bad for our bodies, though, and causes pain and injury longer-term . Ask me how I know.

Investing in a proper mobile office setup made me more comfortable and more productive, even when working from a hotel room or cafe. A vital part of that setup is my keyboard, which increases my typing speed and accuracy, and lets me raise my laptop up on a stand to a better height.

I have a full-size keyboard and mouse at home, but they’re too big and heavy to sensibly stow in my daypack. I take smaller, lighter versions with me whenever I’m working outside the house: Bluetooth-enabled, I can use them with laptops, tablets, phones, and even the smart TV in my Airbnb.

After using dozens of models over the years, the main things I look for now are the size and weight, comfort and noise levels while typing, compatibility with the devices I use, and battery life. Durability is also crucial: the lightest, quietest keyboard is no use if it breaks within a few weeks.

Whether you’re looking for a high-quality option for remote work, a lightweight budget option to use now and then, or an ultra-compact model for smartphone use, these are the portable keyboards worth buying right now.

Best Portable Keyboard: Logitech MX Keys Mini

Best on a Budget: Logitech K380

  • Size: 10.9 x 4.9 x 0.6 inches
  • Weight: 14.9 ounces
  • Battery Life: Up to two years from 2x AAA batteries
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth

Best With Mechanical Keys: NuPhy Air75 v2

  • Size: 12.5 x 5.2 x 0.6 inches
  • Weight: 21 ounces
  • Battery Life: 35-57 hours with backlighting on, up to 220 hours with it off
  • Connectivity: USB, Bluetooth, wired

Best Ultralight Option: Arteck HB030B

  • Size: 9.7 x 5.9 x 0.2 inches
  • Weight: 7.6 ounces
  • Battery Life: Up to six months from internal rechargeable battery

Best for Phones: iClever BK06

  • Size: 10 x 3.5 x 0.3 inches (when extended)
  • Weight: 6.2 ounces
  • Battery Life: Up to 40 hours of continual use from internal rechargeable battery

Best Portable Keyboard: Logitech MX Keys Mini

Pale grey keyboard on white desk, with "logi' logo at the top.

For several years, there really wasn’t a high-quality keyboard out there that was small and light enough to travel with consistently, had a great typing experience, and didn’t feel like it’d break after a few weeks on the road.

After my Logitech K810 broke and I discovered that the company had discontinued it, I spent a lot of time looking for a true replacement without success. I made do with cheap versions that did the job ok, but was never totally happy with them.

That finally changed when Logitech released the MX Keys Mini , a smaller version of the full-sized MX Keys that lives in my home office. It’s a genuine pleasure to use, even when I’m typing quickly: at 80wpm, which is about as fast as I can manage, there’s no flex or movement and very little noise.

Like many of the company’s keyboards, it can pair with three different devices, and you can switch between them at the press of a button. I also like the system-wide mic mute button for when I’m on conference calls; I’m less excited about the dedicated emoji key, but I’m sure it’s useful for someone.

Battery life is reasonable with backlighting turned on, at about ten days, and excellent when it’s turned off: you’ll get anywhere up to five months out of it. If you do leave it on, it’s automatic: the lights switch on when you bring your hands nearby, and off again a few seconds after you move away.

At 1.1 pounds, it’s a little heavier than many similar-sized keyboards. That’s for good reason: there’s a single metal plate that holds the whole thing together, and it feels extremely solid as a result. I haven’t had enough time with it yet to really comment on its longevity, but first impressions are very good.

The keyboard connects via Bluetooth or one of Logitech’s new Bolt USB receivers. You’ll almost certainly be using the former, if for no other reason than there’s no USB dongle in the box. That’s the only real disappointment with this keyboard, especially given the price.

You can read my full review of the MX Keys Mini here , which goes in to much more detail. Suffice it to say, though: if you’re in the market for a premium portable keyboard for working from the road, this is the one to buy.

  • Expensive for a keyboard
  • No USB receiver in the box

Best on a Budget: Logitech K380

Closeup of a small blue keyboard on wooden table

Staying on the Logitech train, one of the company’s most popular compact models is the Logitech K380 , and for good reason.

Inexpensive and lightweight, the K380 appears somewhat flimsy at first glance, but looks can be deceptive: both the typing experience and durability have significantly exceeded my expectations.

This is the keyboard I bought to travel with when my old one died: the MX Keys Mini hadn’t come out yet, and I needed something, anything to get me through. I figured I’d be happy if it lasted longer than its one-year warranty period, but it’s still going strong 3+ years later.

The rounded keys took a little getting used to, but the travel and key gap is no different to other portable keyboards, and you should be typing at full speed within a day or two. The keys are a bit “clacky” if you’re typing quickly, a common issue with cheaper keyboards, but it’s quieter than most at this price.

Measuring roughly 11 by 5 inches and weighing under 15oz, it takes up minimal space on your desk or in your bag. Narrower than my 13″ laptop, it slides easily into my daypack, and I barely notice it’s there. It lived there for over a year of continual travel, and held up to the abuse just fine.

The keyboard can pair with up to three devices via Bluetooth, and it’s easy to switch between them via the function keys at the top. It’s quick to connect, typically taking less than a second, and doesn’t drop out or miss keystrokes even when typing quickly.

The K380 comes in a small range of colors, and two variants: one with a Windows-focused keyboard layout , and one for Mac . All versions will work on most mobile and desktop operating systems, but it’s worth getting the layout you’re most familiar with.

The keyboard runs from a pair of AAA batteries (included) that are rated for up to two years of use before needing replacing. That hasn’t quite been my experience, although I probably spend longer on it each day than some: I’ve swapped them out about once a year on average.

One thing I would suggest is to make sure you switch the keyboard off when you’re not using it, and especially on travel days. It’s all too easy to drop it in your bag and have it keep activating every time a key gets accidentally pressed, which drains the batteries pretty quickly.

A comfortable, reliable option that’s easy to travel with and is priced very reasonably for what it offers, this is my top budget keyboard pick for travel right now. You can find my full Logitech K380 review here .

  • Round keys may take a little getting used to
  • No backlighting

Best With Mechanical Keys: NuPhy Air75 v2

nuphy Air75 V2 Portable 75% Mechanical Keyboard,Wireless Keyboard,Supports Bluetooth/2.4G/USB-C RGB Bluetooth Keyboards,Compatible with Windows/Mac OS/Linux Systems-Gateron Cowberry Switch

Can’t stand the “squishy” feeling of typing on most laptop and quiet-touch keyboards? Like to game as you travel and can’t stand the latency of a standard Bluetooth keyboard? A portable mechanical keyboard is the answer to both problems.

While most models are far too big and heavy to even consider traveling with, a few companies have spotted an opportunity to make smaller, lighter versions. My favorite is the NuPhy Air75 which is now onto its second version.

It’s three-quarters the size of a traditional desktop keyboard, but doesn’t compromise at all on the typing experience. At just 12.5″ wide and 0.6″ thick, it’s smaller than some of the other models discussed here, although the 21oz weight is heavier than most other travel keyboards.

Even so, if you’re set on a mechanical keyboard, you’ll struggle to find anything much smaller or lighter than this, especially made this well.

The typing experience is a delight, and while any mechanical keys will require more force than tapping away on your laptop, the Air75 doesn’t go overboard. There are a variety of low-profile and standard keycaps available at time of purchase; you can swap them out later if you change your mind.

You’ve got several connection options, more than anything else on this list. As well as connecting to three Bluetooth devices simultaneously, you can plug in the bundled USB receiver to control a fourth. Run a USB C cable to your computer, and you can even use it as a wired keyboard while it charges.

Build quality is very impressive, with plenty of metal used throughout: this keyboard can take a beating. If you’re one for RGB lighting, the individually-lit keys and wide range of customization options in the bundled software means you’re in for a treat.

Battery life is reasonable, at about 50 hours of use between charges of the internal battery with the backlighting on, and anything up to around four times that with the lights off.

Mechanical keyboards are a bit of a divisive issue when it comes to travel. While many people love the firm, tactile touch they offer, even the quietest mechanical keys and switches are noticeably louder than the average laptop or scissor-switch keyboard.

As a result, I’d generally suggest that portable mechanical keyboards are best used in hotel rooms and Airbnb’s rather than libraries or quiet cafes when you’re traveling. At the end of the day, it’s entirely up to you: just don’t be surprised if you get dirty looks in public spaces!

If you do decide that mechanical is the right approach, it’s very hard to go past the NuPhy Air75.

  • Louder than membrane keyboards
  • While it’s light for a mechanical keyboard, it’s still heavier than other travel-sized keyboards

Best Ultralight Option: Arteck HB030B

Arteck Universal Backlit 7-Colors Ultra Light Slim Portable Wireless Bluetooth 3.0 Keyboard for iOS iPad Pro, Air, Mini, Android, Windows Tablets PC Smartphone Built in Rechargeable 6-Month Battery

For those looking for a very lightweight, travel-friendly keyboard, the Arteck HB030B is the way to go. This slim, compact model weighs less than eight ounces and measures just 9.7 x 5.9 x 0.2 inches.

The built-in rechargeable battery lasts anywhere up to an impressive six months before needing to be charged up again. That’s based on around two hours of use per day: scale that timeframe up or down as needed based on how much typing you expect to do.

The Arteck HB030B connects to devices via Bluetooth. As such, it’s compatible with any Bluetooth-enabled device running one of the standard operating systems (iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows). It also has limited Linux support: some function keys don’t work correctly.

Unlike the Logitech models mentioned above, though, it can only remember one device at a time, so isn’t designed for rapid switching back and forth.

The HB030B has seven backlighting color options and two brightness levels. This adds some style, but not for long: the light turns off after 15 seconds of inactivity. This preserves battery life, but the switching on and off can be a bit distracting.

Apart from the backlighting, the only real downside to this model is its durability. The ultra-slim design makes it more prone to damage, particularly when it’s constantly going in and out of a backpack. It does have a 24-month warranty, but this only covers manufacturing defects, not accidental damage.

As a result, it’s not what I’d go for as a digital nomad or someone who works outside the house most of the time. If all you need is something small for the occasional business trip or co-working session, though, it’s definitely worth a look.

  • Backlighting turns off after 15 seconds of inactivity
  • Not especially durable

Best for Phones: iClever BK06

Portable Keyboard, iClever BK06 Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard, Multi-Device Wireless Folding Keyboard, Ultra Slim Ergonomic Design with Stand Holder for iPhone, iPad, Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop

The most portable keyboard on this list is the iClever BK06 , which uses a folding design to get down to somewhere around pocket size. A large pocket, perhaps, but a pocket nonetheless.

Measuring 13.2 x 4.0 inches when extended, it folds down to 6.5 x 4.0 inches, not much bigger than a large smartphone. Weighing just 6.2 ounces, this is a keyboard that you can always have with you, and could use for quickly jotting down notes or responding to texts on your phone.

The iClever BK06 turns off automatically when folded up to conserve battery. It connects to most Bluetooth-enabled devices, including phones and tablets (Android or iOS), and comes with a free stand to prop up your mobile device. It works with Mac and Windows computers as well.

Like the Logitech models mentioned above, the BK06 can remember up to three devices at once, and easily switch between them.

The 13-inch width is close to full size, meaning most people shouldn’t feel too cramped while using it. The company makes even smaller models of keyboard as well, but after using one of them, I think the trade-off between size, comfort, and productivity is a little too great.

Tri-fold versions of this keyboard are also available, including one with a backlight and another with a touchpad . They’re a similar size to the BK06, and may suit you better depending on your exact requirements.

The Best Keyboard for Travel (Lightweight, Foldable and Universal)

The Best Keyboard for Travel (Lightweight, Foldable and Universal)

If you are looking to buy a keyboard that you can take with you, whether it be for a business trip or for your vacation, we have the perfect recommendation for you.

Bluetooth travel keyboard connected with Macbook on a Roost stand in a coffee shop

Since I work while traveling, I need to communicate with my clients and colleagues all the time. I felt the need for a good portable keyboard so that I could contact them.

Even though I love my smartphone (of course I do), I hate typing. Every time I want to send a longer message, I misspell like, every single word, which, you know, can be pretty irritating. It isn’t like I have a whole day for trying to type the same word over and over again until I spell it correctly. And this problem got even bigger on my trips.

As it turned out, typing on the go is much more inconvenient, especially when you have to send a very loooong message to your best friend, informing her/him of who you met, what did you do etc. Since I travel pretty often, I learned the importance of having a portable keyboard, so that you make your friends happy and make googling much faster. So, let’s talk about finding the best keyword for travel.

How to choose a keyboard for travel?

Man traveling with mechanical keyboard

Obviously, when you’re traveling all over the world, the last thing you need is adding more weight to your luggage. Therefore, it would be a smart idea to choose a lightweight and thin keyboard, and ideally, a foldable one . Thanks to all this, you’ll store the keyboard with ease. Of course, foldable keyboard means taking up less space in your luggage.

Battery life

Needless to say, your keyboard should have a great battery life so as to enable you to enjoy your trips without thinking of this. Some models have a battery that will only last for 3 days, while others come with a battery that will last for months .

Is it Spill-resistant?

Bluetooth keyboard connected with an ipad

Another thing to consider is whether your keyboard comes with water repellent keyset. This means, that if you accidentally spill coffee or juice on your keyboard, it won’t stop working . So, if you ask me, I’d say this feature is quite an important one.

Compatibility issues

Now, most cheap portable/travel keyboard suck when it comes to compatibility, which definitely is a problem. Some keyboards cannot connect to different devices at all , even though they should. So, this is something you want to check, BEFORE buying a travel keyboard. Make sure to read reviews since there you will find out the pros and cons of a certain product. A good travel keyboard should connect with every Bluetooth device .

Typing issues

Another common issue related to travel keyboards is the typing itself. Meaning, some keyboards that are made of flexible materials (either polyurethane or silicone) make typing very awkward , even troublesome because you won’t have the feeling that you’re typing on the keyboard at all. In addition, from time to time, the keys tend to stuck. So, what you want to do is find a keyboard with raised, rounded keys that will ensure a nice typing experience.

As for the design, don’t expect too much. These keyboards are primarily designed to pack easily, not to look like a million dollar keyboard. Naturally, most models come in black, as this color is easy to maintain.

Types of travel keyboards

This is a foldable travel keyboard

Made from flexible materials, these keyboards can fold small enough so they fit into pockets and bags . Users love them since they are lightweight and thin, so, practically, they don’t add any weight to the luggage.

They come in a range of prices so you can easily find the perfect travel keyboard for your needs and according to your means. However, keep in mind that some cheaper models don’t provide a good typing experience.

Non-foldable

Even though these keyboards don’t fold, they are still perfect for traveling, because they are compact . In addition, they are much easier to type on and also to use, compared to the aforementioned type. However, they take up more space, and definitely can’t fit your pocket.

Whichever type you choose, both are Bluetooth keyboards. So, logically, they are connected to your phone via Bluetooth. In case you are new to the world of Bluetooth devices and connecting ones, don’t worry. There is a plethora of videos and articles that show how to connect your keyboard to your phone. The process is rather simple and you will catch it fast.

The Best Travel Keyboard is Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard

Microsoft keyboard is thin and sleek

I’ve tried many different portable keyboards, but my favorite is this one – Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard . Coming from Microsoft, this keyboard works perfectly, and I absolutely love it.

Since it has a foldable design , I don’t have any difficulty with packing it in my backpack or a suitcase. Moreover, this keyboard is super thin (only 5 mm) and very lightweight , which only adds up to its convenience.

In addition, it connects to my phone or a tablet in a blink of an eye , which is practical. And what I really appreciate about it is that, when I want to shut it down, I just need to close the keyboard. Pretty handy, huh?

The icing on the cake is a rechargeable battery that allows for even three months of use per a single charge . This feature is also a very handy one.

Now, don’t think this keyboard is perfect (though it’s very close to it). It’s a bit pricey, but, keep in mind that you get what you pay for .

A tiny issue is that the keyboard won’t memorize pairing to different devices . However, I don’t need to connect the keyboard to too many devices, so this doesn’t bother me. But if that’s not the case with you, you’ll have to be patient in order to pair back the keyboard to a certain device.

Buy Microsoft Foldable Keyboard Online

And there you have it, my friends. The main things you need to know about finding the best keyboard for travel. I truly hope that this article helped you and that you will soon buy the perfect travel keyboard for your trips. Do you use a good travel mouse ? Is your laptop ultralight enough for trips ? Bon, voyage!

Review Summary

Just about every tablet and phone can be connected with Microsoft Universal Mobile Keyboard. Being very ergonomic, lightweight and foldable makes it perfect travel keyboard.

The ultra-thin design is easy to move and you can keep your phone in the top row of the keyboard. This provides you with a numeric keypad, despite being a compact design.

What to consider with a travel keyboard

You'll want a travel keyboard that is compact, wireless, and easy to move. You won't be able to bring a heavy mechanical keyboard that you use for gaming with you in many places. Looking for a tenkeyless design can be incredibly helpful if you know that desktop space is tight. We are huge fans of the Logitech MX Keys Mini because it is lightweight, portable, and efficient to use. This is compatible with Mac, Windows, Linux, and Android, making it a great purchase for almost anyone.

If you are interested in something a little more premium, the Microsoft Surface Keyboard gives you a ton of wireless range, reaching up to 50 feet in open air. But the sleek and simple design makes this full-size keyboard easy to bring with you. For those that don't want to spend a ton on their keyboard or know they will utilize it mostly for a tablet, the OMOTON Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard is a safe bet. It works with your iPad as well as a Windows laptop if you need it to.

Make sure that you're thinking about what kind of bag you need to store your keyboard in when you're buying one. If you have limited space, you can even consider a foldable keyboard. Ergonomics can feel like they go out the window with the design of a travel keyboard, but there are plenty that still work well on your wrists and hands, so keep that in mind. The best travel keyboards will be easy to use as well as simple to carry.

The Best Wireless Keyboards for Travel

For digital nomads and travelers, portability and convenience are key. These wireless keyboards tick both of those boxes and more.

With the rise of the traveling remote worker, there is an ever-increasing demand for technology to make their experience more convenient and comfortable. One crucial tool travelers need is a wireless keyboard.

Wireless keyboards have different features, but they all help contribute to pain-free backs and comfortable workstations. However, travelers also need keyboards that fit effortlessly into their luggage, while backlights and multi-device pairing are features that may also be of interest.

Here are some of the best wireless keyboards for travel available today.

Logitech K380

Logitech mx keys mini, arteck hb030b, apple magic keyboard, samsers foldable bluetooth keyboard, microsoft designer compact keyboard, logitech k480, omoton ultra-slim bluetooth keyboard, our top picks for wireless travel keyboards in 2023.

An Affordable Keyboard for Connecting to Multiple Devices

The Logitech K380 is the best choice of wireless keyboard for travelers who need to connect with multiple devices simultaneously. It can pair with up to three devices at the same time, enabling you to type on your phone, laptop, or tablet conveniently and comfortably. The keyboard is also very quiet and offers remarkable battery life, slim dimensions, and a pleasing asking price.

  • Universal compatibility
  • Excellent battery life
  • Comfortable, low-profile, and quiet keys
  • Nice color choices
  • Compactness compromises some key sizes
  • No backlight

If you need a wireless keyboard that you can use with multiple devices simultaneously, the Logitech K380 is a good choice. You can quickly change from writing a text message on your phone to typing on your laptop and then on to your tablet with simple button presses, keeping you in the moment and focused.

However, it’s not just a keyboard for travelers. Office and remote workers will also love its low-profile and quiet keys. Although the ABS plastic may feel a little on the low-quality side, it contributes to the hushed performance. The scissor keys are also rounded and slightly scooped to match your fingertips for comfort.

In terms of dimensions, this keyboard is relatively small and slim. It's not the lightest at more than 14 ounces but is still light enough to be easily transportable. Travelers can effortlessly slide it into their luggage before getting on the plane or train to their next destination.

Two AAA batteries power the K380 and give it a remarkable 24-month life. Charging is a burden you won’t need to worry about, and buying replacement batteries is something you will rarely need to do.

A Premium Keyboard with High-end Features and Build

The Logitech Keys Mini is a premium wireless keyboard with an excellent build and quality features. This compact version of the MX Keys omits the numeric keypad, making it a more compact choice for travelers. You can connect up to three devices, and handy features like system mute and dictation keys add to the convenience.

  • Nice selection of colors
  • Mac-specific version available
  • Comfortable, ergonomic keyboard
  • Can connect with three devices at the same time

Logitech has released a compact version of the company’s MX Keys wireless keyboard with the Logitech MX Keys Mini. At 18oz, it’s actually a bit of a middleweight. However, the build is solid, and the keyboard is still easily portable, thanks to its compact dimensions.

The numeric keypad is the most significant omission to help it achieve ‘mini’ status. So, if you are a traveler who works with numbers, you may want to opt for the full version.

Typing is a comfortable experience. The keys have a ‘scooped’ design for better ergonomics and pleasant tactile feedback. However, if you prefer a flat typing experience, the keyboard's permanent incline may not suit your needs.

The MX Keys Mini also features a convenient ‘Easy Switch’ that allows you to pair with up to three devices. In addition, you get a system mute key that mutes your mic across the board, along with useful emoji and dictation keys.

The keyboard features soft backlighting that illuminates automatically when your hands are near. It’s a valuable feature that some similarly-priced keyboards don't include. However, you can turn it off to preserve battery life, extending it from an average of 10 days to up to five months.

An Affordable Backlit Keyboard

If you’re searching for a budget-priced wireless keyboard that still offers excellent quality, consider the Arteck HB030B. Despite being so affordable, it has a convenient backlight that ensures you can finish your work outside, even after the sun has set. There’s even an auto-sleep feature that helps preserve the already excellent battery life. Travelers will also love the compact and lightweight dimensions that make it a cinch to pack away.

  • Choice of backlighting color and brightness level
  • Good battery life
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Single-device pairing
  • May be unsuitable for big hands

Searching for an economically-priced yet reliable wireless keyboard to get work done while you travel is a tricky task. Despite lacking a catchy name, the Arteck HB030B is an excellent option with a very affordable price tag.

Its best feature is that it is backlit. Not only that, but you can choose from seven deep and rich colors, ranging from deep blue to purple. There are also two brightness levels and an auto-sleep feature. The latter is particularly handy as it will help conserve battery power when you get preoccupied with that coffee-break conversation at the coworking space.

From a portability perspective, the keyboard is 10x6 inches and weighs just over six ounces, making it remarkably compact and lightweight. It will slip into any hand luggage or day bag with ease, as it is only a quarter of an inch thick. While you may find it a little cramped if you have large hands, typing is quiet and comfortable.

This keyboard is compatible with all major operating systems, and according to Arteck, the rechargeable batteries have a 6-month life. However, the company bases this battery life on two hours of typing a day with the backlight off.

The Renowned Magic Keyboard for Apple Users

The Apple Magic Keyboard is designed for Apple products. It’s a slim, featherlight keyboard that’s barely noticeable when traveling and is comfortable to type on for hours. It may be a little pricier than other wireless keyboards, but the battery has a long life, and the setup is seamless.

  • Lightweight and slim
  • Good build quality
  • USB-C to Lightning cable included
  • Long-lasting battery
  • Keyboard layout best suited for Apple products

The Apple Magic Keyboard is a premium-priced wireless keyboard that will satisfy any traveler’s need for a comfortable and quiet typing experience. Although Apple has naturally marketed this keyboard specifically to its users, it does, in fact, work well with Windows laptops and Android devices, although the keyboard layout is naturally best suited for Apple devices.

The built-in lithium-ion battery is long-lasting; it will power your keyboard for about a month on average, and setting it up is straightforward. You can simply pair it with your device and immediately get to work.

The keyboard is thin at the bottom and slightly thicker at the top. The height at the spacebar end is just 0.16 inches. For ergonomic purposes, this height steadily rises to less than half an inch at the top, making it incredibly slim. And, with a weight of just half a pound, you will barely notice this keyboard slid into any luggage or bag.

One potential problem is it's not backlit, so using it in dim light may be an issue. This model also doesn’t feature a touch ID or a numeric keypad. Both of these features are available on other models. However, before purchasing, travelers should consider the additional cost, length, and weight these features will add.

A Foldable Wireless Keyboard for Compact Traveling

Should you want to slip your wireless keyboard into a back pocket while on the go, you’re going to need a foldable model. The Samsers Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard does just that, all the while remaining thin. It’s compatible with just about every device and comes with a complimentary phone holder. Additionally, the automatic power-on and quick start features ensure you can get typing quickly.

  • Robust faux leather cover
  • Easy pairing
  • Wide compatibility
  • Automatic power on/off
  • Phone stand included
  • Some small-sized keys

A foldable wireless keyboard is an option for travelers who want to slip it into a back pocket or purse while on the go. Once folded, this Samsers keyboard is palm-sized and still relatively thin. And it has a barely noticeable weight of just 5.5 ounces.

The keyboard looks stylish and features spring scissor switches and a wear-resistant faux leather cover. It powers on and pairs with your last device automatically when you unfold it and powers off when you fold it away again. While you can get typing quickly, the experience takes some getting used to because some key sizes are smaller than usual because of the central hinge.

The Samsers Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard is compatible with almost any device, including iOS, Android, and Windows. It comes with a complimentary phone holder, which is helpful if you are working from your phone or want to message friends and family while working on your laptop.

However, the two AAA batteries don’t have a remarkable life like other wireless keyboards. But, with 40 hours of continuous use possible, it still does not need inconvenient charging every other day.

A Compact Keyboard with Incredible Battery life

The Microsoft Designer Compact Keyboard may be a little more expensive than other wireless keyboards, but it offers many convenient features. One of those is the Expressive Input Key, which gives easy access to a variety of emojis. It’s a comfortable keyboard to type on, has superb battery life, and is compact and lightweight, making it a good choice for any kind of traveler.

  • Outstanding battery life
  • Excellent wireless range
  • Expressive Input and Screen-Snipping keys
  • Optimized key spacing and key travel
  • No adjustable leg stands

One fun feature of the Designer Compact Keyboard is what Microsoft refers to as an Expressive Input Key, which is basically a quick access button for emojis. Additionally, there is the Screen-Snipping Key for easy capturing, copying, pasting, and sharing.

It has a noteworthy 0.38-inch thickness, and even with the four required lithium-metal batteries, it’s still lightweight at 10oz. You can also switch between three connected devices, and it’s compatible with different operating systems, useful for travelers using different devices on the go.

It’s a very comfortable, low-profile keyboard to type on with optimization on the angle, key spacing, and key travel. It's more comfortable and reliable than most wireless keyboards, especially when you consider the 33-foot wireless range. That reliability extends to the keyboard’s outstanding 36-month battery life provided by the four lithium-metal batteries.

A sold-separately numeric keypad is also available if you are a traveling accountant, data analyst, or similar and input a lot of numbers when working.

A Built-In Cradle for Smartphones and Laptops

For travelers who work from a phone or tablet, the Logitech K480 has a built-in cradle to hold your device in place. While this increases the weight and bulk of the keyboard, you won’t need to pack a separate holder. You can also pair the keyboard with up to three devices with the convenient Easy-Switch Dial, while it’s also durable and spill-resistant.

  • Can pair with three devices simultaneously
  • Easy-Switch Dial
  • Spill-resistant
  • Heavier than most wireless keyboards

If you are the type of traveler who works from a phone or a tablet, you may be interested in the Logitech K480. While it is heavier than most wireless keyboards because of an extra built-in cradle, it negates the need for an additional holder for your phone or tablet while traveling.

Communicating with colleagues on your phone while you work on your tablet is simple by using the convenient Easy-Switch Dial. It allows you to work or play with up to three devices simultaneously on all major platforms.

The keyboard is comfortable to use, but it doesn’t have a premium feel. However, it’s also not a premium-priced device. What you get is a good keyboard that performs its primary function of pairing and switching between three devices really well. An added bonus is its durability and spill resistance of up to 60ml of accidental spillage.

An Apple Magic Keyboard Alternative for iPads and iPhones

For travelers with iPads and iPhones who don’t want to invest in a pricey Apple Magic Keyboard, the OMOTON Ultra-Slim is a good alternative. While some minor problems may exist with MacBooks, it’s an affordable alternative for most other Apple products. It’s lightweight and remarkably slim and should easily slip into any deep pocket or pouch.

  • Nice choice of colors
  • Lightweight and slimline
  • Automatic Sleep Mode
  • Premium-looking design
  • 10-meter operating distance
  • Batteries not included

Travelers who use iPads or iPhones when on the go but don’t want to invest in a premium-priced Apple Magic Keyboard may be interested in the OMOTON Ultra-Slim. At first glance, you might think it is actually an Apple Magic Keyboard. However, it is a much more affordable option if you are happy to sacrifice a sturdy aluminum build for plastic.

iPads and iPhones are the primary intentions of this keyboard. It unofficially works with other operating systems, but the hotkeys may not perform accurately. It will also work with a MacBook but with limited functionality.

For travel purposes, it's lightweight at under 10oz and has compact dimensions, especially the incredible 0.2 inches of thickness. However, the compartment on the bottom where you house the batteries prevents packing from being absolutely streamlined. However, the compartment gives the keyboard a comfortable ergonomic lift.

Power-wise, you get about 30 days of use. However, OMOTON claims that you can extend this considerably by putting the keyboard into Automatic Sleep Mode to extend battery life by up to six months.

What to Look for in a Wireless Travel Keyboard

When buying a wireless keyboard, there are a few things you need to consider. First is the dimensions. Will the keyboard fit easily into your hand luggage or day pack? Most wireless keyboards will, but you should double-check if you’re buying one with a numeric pad. You also need to consider the weight. Although some are heavier than others, most wireless keyboards are light enough for travel.

Compatibility is another consideration. Many wireless keyboards have universal compatibility, but some might work better with one operating system than others. The Apple Magic Keyboard, for instance, is designed for Apple products, but you can still use it with Windows, although not everything may work as expected.

Keyboard comfort is another concern. Wireless keyboards generally use scissor-switch mechanisms, which are comfortable and quiet. Some less-expensive keyboards may use different mechanisms, such as a membrane switch. They are still comfortable and quiet but less durable and may lack responsiveness for gamers. The Arteck HB030B falls in the latter category, but its highlight is its affordable price tag. On the other hand, the Logitech MX Keys Mini has comfortable, ergonomically designed keys that are great to type on but is much more expensive.

Other considerations are backlighting, battery life, the ability to connect with multiple devices, and, of course, the price. Our top pick is the Logitech K380. You can connect to up to three devices, and it has a quiet, comfortable keyboard and excellent battery life. It’s also available at a superb price considering its quality.

Compared to other options on this list, the Sungwoo Foldable Silicone Keyboard surely looks “different”. But that’s also what makes it loved by many. This travel keyboard is fabricated of high-intensity and high-elasticity silicone gel that’s non-toxic and has no smell. Personally, I think this keyboard deserves an A+ for its design. With a flexible silicone material, I was able to effortlessly fold or roll it up like sushi.

What’s more, this keyboard is both dust and water-resistant. It also doesn’t call for extra keyboard cover skin. That being said, if you find this keyboard covered with dust or food crumbs, just use water, alcohol, or alcohol-based disinfectant to clean it up. I think it’s one of the most low-maintenance keyboards out there. Not to mention, the typing on this keyboard is completely noiseless due to the soft material.

  • Thanks to its rollable and foldable design, you can keep it however you like.
  • It’s both dustproof and waterproof.
  • You won’t annoy others when typing as the keyboard is noiseless.
  • It’s not really the most durable choice.

lightweight travel keyboard

The Keluowan Mini Wireless Keyboard is the perfect pick for those who hate cables. This mini keyboard boasts nearly 32 feet of connectivity range and a frequency range of 2.4GHz. I don’t mind using wired keyboards, but I have to admit that I had an awesome experience using this one. I never had to think of the tangled cables during testing and it was super easy to connect the keyboard to my tablet .

Due to its plug-and-play functionality, all I needed to do was to plug the featured USB receiver into the USB interface of my gadget. Aside from that, I also like its amazing battery life. This keyboard only needs two AAA batteries that will provide several months of continuous use so you don’t have to bother with replacing them for some time. Lastly, it’s compatible with Windows and Android devices.

  • This is a nice budget keyboard that’s super comfortable to use.
  • It’s super compact and lightweight.
  • No one has to hassle with keyboard cables anymore.
  • Some people think the keyboard feels cheap.

If you have plenty of cash to spend, feel free to buy a mouse and keyboard separately. After all, there are plenty of high-quality, stylish, and compact mice out there. However, if you’re like me and want to skip the hassle of getting two separate products, Seenda has an impressive combo. Introducing you to the Seenda Wireless Keyboard Mouse . This keyboard comes with a wireless mouse that can run for as long as 3 months at a time before needing a recharge.

The keyboard itself is slim, sleek, and overall really compact. Based on my experience, it should be able to fit inside most travel bags. What’s more, both the keyboard and mouse also work using a single unified wireless USB adapter. Best of all, they come with a lifetime warranty. However, you should know that this isn’t a Bluetooth portable keyboard for iPad. It won’t be able to connect to your smartphones or tablets.

  • This is one of the top choices for those looking for a mouse and keyboard combo.
  • The keyboard is backed by a lifetime warranty.
  • Its compact design makes it great for traveling.
  • Unfortunately, the keyboard isn’t made for smartphones and tablets.

Best Keyboard Mouse Combo. With the xtremtec Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo , it’s more than possible for you to work conveniently even without a PC or laptop at hand. It features 2.4GHz wireless connectivity that’s extremely stable. Plus, it boasts compatibility with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, and the newest 11. Are you an iPad or MacBook user? Fret not, as this keyboard is also compatible with Mac and iOS.

If you’re into a portable laptop keyboard with number pad, you’ll certainly love this keyboard. Though longer than some of its competitors, it’s still lightweight as it weighs only 384 gr. I’ve carried it before and I do agree that it’s highly portable. Being lightweight, this plug-and-play keyboard is very easy to bring with you and suitable for travel and business trips. Also, it comes complete with a free silicone cover.

  • The keyboard comes complete with a mouse and silicone cover.
  • It has wide compatibility.
  • The letter on each key is scratch-resistant.
  • It’s not as quiet as some of its competitors.

As the name suggests, the Microsoft Surface Keyboard is designed to let you turn your Surface tablet into a full PC through the addition of a portable keyboard. But even if you don’t own a Surface, don’t worry. This amazing portable keyboard is compatible with Windows and Mac OS. I tried using this keyboard with my MacBook and it worked just fine. Aside from that, you can also connect this keyboard to any Android gadget.

I’m a self-proclaimed minimalist, and I fancy this keyboard’s sleek and simple design. To add, the key sound, stiffness, and texture provided me with a stable and quiet typing experience. Another thing that many people love about this keyboard is its size. Since this is a full-size keyboard, it offers you a desktop-like feel. That’s not all, as it can run for about a year on a single set of AAA batteries. For the complete specifications, visit Microsoft’s official website !

  • It offers a noiseless typing experience.
  • This keyboard is designed to improve typing speed and accuracy.
  • The durability is among the best.
  • Some people have complained about its Bluetooth connectivity issue.

Are you looking for a keyboard with all the typing comfort of fully mechanical key switches but with a compact size? If so, the Keychron K2 Wireless Mechanical Keyboard has got you covered! This keyboard is more compact than its sibling (which you’ll meet later), as it eschews unnecessary keys and just features the essentials. During testing, I was impressed by how it could link up to my devices over Bluetooth and wired USB connections. It allowed me to use it with almost any device.

Furthermore, you don’t have to worry much about the battery, as it can run straight through a full 9-to-5 work week on a single charge. Pretty impressive, right? This portable ergonomic keyboard for laptop also has built-in backlighting. Last but not least, I love how it comes with several different Gateron key switch options. That way, you can find one that you like.

  • This is a relatively low-priced mechanical keyboard.
  • It’s both compact and lightweight.
  • It can connect with up to three devices.
  • Some people find the keyboard too high.

Best With a Tablet Stand. Since Logitech has been in the game for a very long time, there’s no doubt in my mind that its keyboards are all a worthy accessory. That said, the Logitech K780 Multi-Device Wireless Keyboard is no exception. As one of the top-selling keyboards on the market, this product features a very compact design that amazingly still manages to fit in a full number pad. When I was first handed this keyboard, I immediately fell in love with its rounded keycaps! It’s not a big deal but certainly a huge plus for someone like me.

Another thing that users love about this keyboard is that it’s ready for use with a wide variety of devices. That’s because it includes both a Logitech Unifying Receiver USB dongle and the necessary hardware to connect over Bluetooth. When I tested it, I was able to pair it with three Bluetooth devices. I was able to easily switch from typing on my laptop, then to my phone, then to my tablet. Because it includes a slot to hold up your phone or even a huge tablet, it’s very easy to set this keyboard up for typing when you’re on the move.

  • This reasonably-priced keyboard is super comfy to use.
  • It offers a quiet and comfortable typing experience.
  • There’s an integrated tablet stand.
  • There’s no caps lock LED.

Best Foldable. iClever has produced tons of keyboard designs, but the company’s bread and butter is none other than the iClever BK03 Foldable Keyboard . It’s one of the most unique choices for those who like to stand out, as this model is foldable. Yes; you can pay more for other keyboards that have an LED-backlit mode or other fancier features, but for most people, it should hit the spot. I was lucky enough to have the chance to test this keyboard.  The mechanical hinges felt sturdy, and the keyboard turned on automatically once I unfold it.

The case of this keyboard is made of attractive aircraft-grade brushed aluminum. In case you didn’t know, it’s tough as nails. Weighing only 0.39 lbs, it’s super lightweight that you can easily carry it anywhere you go. When folded, this keyboard will go to sleep and become so small that it’s even smaller than my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I totally recommend it if you’re looking for a foldable model. Learn more about this keyboard by visiting its official product page !

  • There’s a large trackpad.
  • It features an auto sleep mode.
  • It has an amazing operating range of 33 feet.
  • Some people find it too small.
This portable #keyboard has a high-end metal frame, comfortable keys and a large trackpad. Oh, and it folds up to the size of your phone. https://t.co/O1jB2R9zsY #gadgets #tech #iClever pic.twitter.com/KQj521R1gf — iClever (@iCleverOfficial) August 23, 2019

For those who want all the goodness of a mechanical keyboard that’s not as big and clunky as the one you’ll find cluttering up the top of gaming desks, I highly recommend purchasing the Keychron K4 Mechanical Keyboard . This keyboard packs a 100-key arrangement complete with arrow keys, function keys, and a full number pad into such an arguably compact size. At first, I thought the key size would be tiny. Thankfully, I was wrong.

Moreover, this keyboard offers a Bluetooth connection. During testing, it allowed me to pair with up to three different devices at once for easy switching. Meanwhile, its 4,000mAh battery can last up to 72 hours once it’s fully charged. It’s more than enough to give you plenty of juice for work while traveling. If you’re like me, you might want to turn on the RGB backlighting for some style points, although it does consume more battery life.

  • It offers a tactile typing experience.
  • The aluminum body is extra durable.
  • Both Mac OS and Windows users can use this keyboard.
  • Some people find it a little bit too high, which makes their wrists uncomfortable

If you’re a MacBook owner, look no further than the OMOTON Bluetooth Keyboard . This portable keyboard has Bluetooth connectivity that’s compatible with most MacBook models with Mac OS 11.3 or above. Aside from my backpack, I was also able to keep it in my friend’s purse during testing. Perfect for travel, this device is ridiculously lightweight.

Among all of its features, I really fancy the scissor mechanism. Together with the durable keycaps, this mechanism enables the keyboard to be used comfortably without any noise. Aside from that, it offers a reliable 33 feet of connectivity range. Additionally, it also features a rechargeable battery that can last up to 120 days once fully charged. Plus, there’s an automatic sleep mode that can help make this keyboard last longer.

  • It has a sleek and compact design.
  • Pairing this keyboard with your MacBook is easy.
  • The battery life is worth two thumbs up.
  • It’s not designed for other non-MacBook devices.

Best Cover. We think you’ll agree that the ALLIFE Universal Wireless Keyboard looks peculiar. This keyboard has a cover that folds up like origami, something that you don’t often see. However, that’s also its selling point. It comes with a protective cover that when opened will fold into a shape that serves as a stand for your phone or tablet of virtually any size. To be honest, it’s such a brilliant idea and makes this keyboard seem worth a lot more than its modest price. Plus, I’ve used it before and I can confidently say that when used as a stand, the cover was sturdy and strong.

Otherwise, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a portable keyboard. It has a low-profile keys construction design, so you don’t have to worry about worrying others when you’re at the café, library, or even airplane. This Bluetooth keyboard also supports four major operating systems, which as you can guess, include iOS, Android, Mac OS, and Windows. Best of all, it’s backed by a generous two-year warranty.

  • It’s a unique keyboard that looks like a million dollars.
  • This keyboard is surprisingly affordable.
  • People with big hands might find it too small.

Best Overall. With the perfect balance of price and features, it’s hard to find something that can beat the OMOTON Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard . This keyboard is super popular. Even before testing it, I’ve seen some of my friends using it. With such a ridiculous price tag, I didn’t expect this keyboard to be packed with bells and whistles. But even so, I couldn’t help but be impressed. Looking for the best portable keyboard for iPad Pro? Fret not; as it’s compatible with all iPads and almost all devices you can think of via Bluetooth.

“Insanely cheap and good, this slim keyboard is really one of a kind. I already knew it’s a popular option among digital nomads. However, after using it, I now know why it’s still relevant to this day.” WOW Travel

This keyboard can make the lives of iPad owners way easier. For one, it comes with hotkeys that are customized for iPads. When I used the keyboard, I was able to control the volume and brightness of my iPad easily. However, note that it pairs with only one device at a time. When it comes to battery life, you’ll be shocked as it can last up to 30 days. Apart from that, I also think it’s super compact and lightweight, which is totally a huge plus for travelers. Need more convincing? Check out what scottdiotbrown has to say in his YouTube video !

  • It’s a simple keyboard that you can pack and take anywhere.
  • Since it uses Bluetooth, you don’t have to deal with cables anymore.
  • The automatic sleep mode helps to save the battery life.
  • Incompatible with MacBook Pro.

No one can deny how lightweight and compact the OMOTON Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard is. Along with its reliable performance, I think it deserves the number one spot. However, it doesn’t mean you should ignore the rest. Below are some of my favorites based on their respective categories:

  • Best Cover: ALLIFE Universal Wireless Keyboard
  • Best Foldable: iClever BK03 Foldable Keyboard
  • Best With a Tablet Stand: Logitech K780 Multi-Device Wireless Keyboard
  • Best Keyboard Mouse Combo: xtremtec Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo

How To Choose The Best Keyboards for Travel

When you’re searching for a new keyboard for your upcoming trip, you should pay attention to some key features to ensure you have a great experience. Those key features are:

Similar to the best laptop stands for travel , looking for the best keyboard for travel can be challenging. That’s because there are a lot of ergonomics important on the desktop like the sculpted keys, angled keyboards, and huge spacing that often goes out the window to make it as portable as possible. So, I recommend trying out the keyboard (if possible) or reading in-depth reviews about it first.

Usually, a great portable keyboard is wireless. However, not all wireless keyboards are the same. Some of them rely on 2.4GHz USB adapters, which means phones and tablets won’t work with those models. But for more universal Bluetooth models, you may want to look for those that can pair with up to 3 devices. These keyboards will let you quickly switch between your laptop, phone, and iPad seamlessly.

You’ll find an enormous range of battery life performance among keyboards. Some can last for days, some can last for weeks or even years. More convenient keyboards will be able to turn on and off automatically, while others need to be switched manually. But in the end, it all depends on your preference.

Let’s be honest, we all hate it when someone is making a lot of noise when they’re typing! That said, let’s not be like them. When you’re looking for a keyboard, make sure that it’s not only comfortable to use but also doesn’t make so much noise.

If you travel a lot, you should choose wireless keyboards as they offer much more mobility. They offer portability and flexibility to you as you can move the keyboard around without having to keep it directly on a desk.

Although rare, wireless keyboards can run into interference or be slightly slower than wired ones. While generally unnoticeable, this may be a big no for gamers or those who require absolute precision with their work.

Of course! You can carry your keyboard in your carry-on or check-in luggage. However, make sure it’s properly packed so it won’t be damaged.

8 Best Travel Keyboards in 2024

By Robin Owens 5 days ago, Keyboards

The best wireless keyboards for travelers.

travel keyboards

If you find yourself traveling constantly, you have to be extra careful with the choice of the tech setup. Remember that you won’t be able to bring your regular monitor, mouse, and keyboard with you. A normal desk to work on may also be impossible to find while you are on the go.

In this case, a laptop will be an optimal way out of the situation although it isn’t exactly convenient for working for hours on end. That’s where the best travel keyboard will come in handy.

Top 8 Best Travel Keyboards

  • Jelly Comb Black - Our Choice
  • iClever BK05 - Bluetooth support
  • Logitech Keys-to-Go - Portable
  • Sungwoo BC75083 - Stylish
  • Aodoor Mini - Plug and play
  • Jelly Comb Multi-device - Tactile keys
  • OMOTON 5154858 - Great battery life
  • Arteck Keyboard and Mouse - Cheap

The choice of the best travel keyboard depends on how exactly you are traveling. For instance, in case you don’t have much additional space in the luggage or a carry-on bag, you need the most portable model. Or you may be after a model that is slightly smaller than a full-fledged keyboard since you don’t want the cables to get messed up in the bag.

Regardless of whether you are interested in a folded-up model or the one that is capable of connecting to the PC, smartphone or tablet, a suitable travel keyboard is found on this list.

1. Jelly Comb Black

travel keyboard jelly comb black

Interface: Bluetooth | Keyboard backlighting: No | Weight: 8.5 ounces | Color: Black

⊕ Compatible systems ⊕ Incredibly thin compact design ⊕ Great connection stability ⊖ None detected

With this minimalistic travel keyboard and mouse, it is possible to work conveniently even without a PC or laptop at hand. 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity up to 10m is stable and robust. The model boasts compatibility with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7,8 and 10. However, it isn’t fully compatible with macOS. Mind that the USB receiver is plugged in on the battery compartment of the keyboard. With the model’s single nano receiver, connecting both keyboard and mouse won’t be a problem.

Since Jelly Comb Black is quite compact, it isn’t full-sized and doesn’t feature a 10-key number pad. This plug and play model is not difficult to bring with you and is perfectly suitable for business trips. Besides, Jelly Comb Black is supplied with an incredibly thin silicone keyboard cover for protection against dust, spills, key wear, etc.

2. iClever BK05

travel keyboard iclever bk05

Interface: Bluetooth | Keyboard backlighting: Yes | Weight: 0.62 lbs | Color: Black

⊕ Lightweight, durable build ⊕ Numerous function keys ⊕ Hassle-free setup ⊖ Not the roomiest carrying pouch

The iClever Portable Foldable Backlight Bluetooth Keyboard features the dimensions of 11.4 by 4.6 by 0.3 inches (HWD) when it is opened. When folded, the dimensions are 6.5 by 4.7 by 0.6 inches. The weight is 9.12 ounces, which is heavier than the previously released models.

Nevertheless, it is among the most lightweight Bluetooth keyboard models I have ever tried.

The model is folded with the help of the hinges, but it doesn’t have a locking mechanism. To make the keyboard more stable on flat surfaces, flip-out feet with rubbery pads are present.

The iClever BK05 can’t be attached to other devices as there is no magnetic connection. To turn on the keyboard, you need to simply unfold it – a physical power switch is absent. Above the function keys, in the center of the keyboard, you will notice three LEDs – Power, State and Caps.

3. Logitech Keys-to-Go

travel keyboard logitech keys-to-go

Interface: Bluetooth | Keyboard backlighting: No | Weight: 6.35 ounces | Color: Black

⊕ Extremely lightweight ⊕ Effortless typing ⊕ Compatibility with Windows and Android ⊖ Not exactly tactile

With the thickness of 6.3mm (1/4 inch) and the length of 242mm (9.5 inches), this extremely portable keyboard may be brought with you wherever you go. Due to its mobility, the model will seamlessly fit into the purse or briefcase, in-between the pages of the magazine, inside the coat or back pocket.

The FabricSkin covering is reliable and guarantees protection against dirt and spills. Even if a drop of something gets on the keyboard, it is easily cleaned and won’t affect the keyboard.

Thanks to the proper placement of full-sized keys, iOS shortcuts and familiar layout, Keys-To-Go is the best travel keyboard for iPad users. It offers swift, convenient and precise typing on any surface since no cables will be disturbing you. The pairing of the keyboard with the iPad via Bluetooth is hassle-free.

4. Sungwoo BC75083

travel keyboard sungwoo bc75083

Interface: Bluetooth | Keyboard backlighting: No | Weight: 7.05 ounces | Color: Black+Grey

⊕ Flexible ⊕ Soft ⊕ Roll-up ⊕ Warm tips ⊖ No backlighting

This travel computer keyboard is fabricated of high intensity and high elasticity silicone gel that is non-toxic and has no smell. Its silicone material is quite flexible so the model may be effortlessly folded or rolled up. The portable dimensions and light weight make it possible to bring the keyboard along with the laptop and Mac.

The Sungwoo BC75083 is dust- and water-resistant and doesn’t call for extra keyboard cover skin. It won’t be difficult to clean up the keyboard from dust or food crumbs – just use water, alcohol or alcohol-based disinfectant for the task.

The typing on the keyboard is completely noiseless due to the soft material. So, you won’t have to worry about bothering others with loud key clicks while being in the office or working from home at nighttime.

5. Aodoor Mini

travel keyboard aodoor mini

Interface: Bluetooth | Keyboard backlighting: No | Weight: 0.71 lbs | Color: Black

⊕ Compact dimensions ⊕ Long-range design ⊕ Plug and play ⊖ Sometimes it loses connection

This travel wireless keyboard boasts nearly 32ft of connectivity range and frequency range of 2.4Ghz. That’s why you may forget about all the hassle with long cables that are constantly being tangled and have to be carried around if you are traveling.

Due to the plug-and-play functionality, you only need to plug in the featured USB receiver into the USB interface of the PC. Drivers aren’t required. However, you have to prepare two AAA batteries to use the keyboard. The batteries will provide several months of continuous use so you may not bother with replacing them for some time.

Aodoor Mini offers compatibility with Windows 7, 8, 2000, Me, XP, Vista, TV, Android, etc., as well as support for 32- and 64-bit systems.

6. Jelly Comb Multi-device

travel keyboard jelly comb multi-device

Interface: Bluetooth | Keyboard backlighting: No | Weight: 1.56 lbs | Color: Black

⊕ Ergonomic concave round keys ⊕ Multi-device Bluetooth model ⊕ Solid Bluetooth connection ⊖ Poor battery life

The integrated 180mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery of this Bluetooth travel keyboard offers over 40 hours of operating time and a 6-month standby. To save power, it automatically switches to sleep mode when not being used for 10-15 minutes. To activate the keyboard, simply click on any button.

Its layout is a regular and familiar QWERTY keyboard. Scissor-Switch keys contribute to a convenient, responsive and enjoyable typing process. The smooth design of the keystrokes may efficiently diminish the incorrect input, speed up and soften the “press”.

Thanks to the concave keys, you will feel their every edge and the fingers will be rested seamlessly. Convex for Space Bar key provides precise and clear enter operation, giving the thumb a break. With Bluetooth 3.0 technology and a working distance of 10m, you may forget about messed up cables.

7. OMOTON 5154858

travel keyboard omoton 5154858

Interface: Bluetooth | Keyboard backlighting: No | Weight: 5.60 ounces | Color: White

⊕ 6-month battery life ⊕ Soft ⊕ Amazing connection stability ⊖ Doesn’t seem compact

The portable dimensions of 11.2 x 4.7 x 0.2 inches and the light weight of 9.95 oz make the OMOTON 5154858 the best travel keyboard. Feel free to bring it with you anywhere in the backpack, briefcase or a purse. The model is compatible with iPad Pro 12.9 / 11.0. Its layout with 13 hotkeys is customized for iPad Pro 12.9 / 11.0.

The keys are meant for adjusting volume, brightness, taking screenshots, searching, music control and so on.

The scissors-kick keys contribute to the noise-free and a more seamless typing process. Their construction may be used over 3 million times without interruptions.

8. Arteck Keyboard and Mouse

travel keyboard arteck keyboard and mouse

Interface: Bluetooth | Keyboard backlighting: No | Weight: 0.86 lbs | Color: Black

⊕ Rechargeable battery ⊕ Convenient and noiseless typing ⊕ Effortless setup ⊕ Top-notch ergonomic design ⊖ None detected

This travel USB keyboard and mouse may be used immediately – just plug the nano USB receiver, which is found within at the back of the mouse, into the PC. Both the keyboard and the mouse are powered from the single receiver.

The highly capacious rechargeable lithium battery will last for 6 months for the keyboard and 4 months for the mouse on a single charge (in case of 2 hours of continuous use on a daily basis). The stainless steel material of the model feels solid.

The low-profile keys contribute to the convenient typing process. The ergonomic design of the mouse guarantees stress-free usage with utmost comfort.

Keyboard Switches

We deal with keyboards more closely than with all the other components of the computer setup. The keyboards feature various types of key mechanisms, which are referred to as switches. Depending on these switches, the user will feel the typing on the keyboard differently. In fact, keyboards come with an array of tactile parameters, such as key travel, bottoming actions, responsiveness, and the intensity required to record a keypress. The choice of these parameters depends on personal preferences. A low-profile mechanical keyboard that is convenient for you might be a disaster for another person.

The selection of keyboard switches is wide. The most widespread ones are silicone dome, scissor and mechanical. All these types have their benefits and drawbacks, which I will describe shortly. Mind that foldable keyboards manufactured using identical mechanisms can be very different. So, before you opt for a particular model, test it in a real-life setting.

Silicone dome switches have two rubber membranes that come in the form of domes. These switches are depressed when the user presses a key, and it concludes a connection between two circuits to forward a signal to the computer. Budget keyboards feature dome switches, which are typically the ones provided by pre-built PCs. A dome switch produces a mushier and not so accurate feel. Dome switch Mac keyboards incorporate taller keys and call for larger travel distance to record a keypress.

Choosing a Form Factor

While searching for portable Bluetooth keyboards, you need to settle on a certain layout. The regular full-sized board is the most widespread one. To change it up, you may need to use the mechanical transition. A full-sized board offers all the keys required for normal PC operation without having to bother about function layers. Another form factor is a full number pad. The primary disadvantage of such a size that it is quite bulky and ineffective. The movement of hands has to be farther in order to reach all the keys. Moreover, the number pad implies that the mouse will be moved further from the main typing space.

One more type is tenkeyless (TKL), also referred to as 80 percent keyboards. Such boards don’t depend on function layers for standard features, but the number pad is absent. Still, a number row is present, obviously. In case it seems weird to you, consider it once again. Do you use such a number pad that much? It is often used only by those who are involved in entering data. In other cases, a number pad isn’t really necessary. The absence of a number pad makes the keyboard more compact and the mouse is easily reachable.

60 percent boards have become more widespread in recent years. Such a board features only alphas, number row and modifiers. Dedicated arrow keys, F-row and a number pad are absent. These elements are present but in the function layer. You just hold function and press another key. For instance, the arrows are typically Fn+WASD or Fn+JIKL. The primary benefit of 60 percent boards is compact dimensions that become more efficient as soon as you are comfortable with the function layer.

Computer Connectivity

best travel keyboard

Plenty of the best travel keyboard models boast PC connectivity. Despite the fact that it isn’t required to master to play, such connectivity will come in handy for students who are going to make the music themselves using music composition software. If you decide to purchase the best cheap mechanical keyboard with PC connectivity, you may not need to upgrade the keyboard later.

  • • How do I pick the proper keyboard?

There are several parameters you have to consider:

Type of switches

Compatibility

Wired or wireless design

Additional functions

  • • What are the 3 types of keyboards?

The original PC keyboard with 84 keys, the AT keyboard with 84 keys as well and the improved keyboard with 101 keys. The main difference between them is the location of function keys, the control keys, the return key and the shift key.

  • • What is the standard keyboard?

It was designed during the 1800s for mechanical typewriters with only10 function keys (F keys) located at the left side of it.

  • • What size is a full-sized keyboard?

The keys of a full-size keyboard are of 15.5mm x 15mm size. They have the key spacing (or key travel) of approximately 3.3mm to 3.8mm.

Finding the Right Travel Keyboard for You

Determining which ergonomic travel keyboard is the perfect one for you depends entirely on your favorite devices and on your preferred modes of working.

Go!2 Travel Keyboard

Do you hate clutter and love keeping an organized travel bag? A wireless split keyboard or wireless mini keyboard will take the tangles out of your travel experience — and off of your desk-away-from-home, too.

Are you a style guru who values slim design over everything else? Then the wireless mini keyboard is just what you’re looking for. With a lightweight design and a low profile, the mini keyboard will look great paired with your slimmest devices, and will make for a much more comfortable typing experience than you’ll find on a tablet or iPhone touchscreen. And with a long lasting rechargeable battery, you won’t have to worry about powering up.

Who Benefits the Most

While mobile keyboards are a great convenience for just about anyone, they will have the greatest impact for frequent travelers and remote workers. This includes jet setting business executives, sales representatives well-accustomed to bedding down in one time zone and waking up in another, and telecommuters operating from coffee shops, co-working spaces, and home offices. Improved productivity with less pain and injury risk.

And let’s not forget the companies that employ them. After all, OSHA considers employers to be responsible for creating a healthy and safe office environment no matter where their employees operate from. Travel keyboards ensure safety and prevent injury regardless of locale.

Why should working from the road be any different than working from the office? Find your travel keyboard , or contact a Goldtouch Enterprise Specialist today.

By Kimber Streams

Kimber Streams is a writer who has been covering laptops and other tech at Wirecutter for more than a decade. They once built a fort out of keyboards.

If you spend most of your day typing, you shouldn’t be stuck with the mushy keyboard on your laptop or a cheap, uncomfortable desktop keyboard. Mechanical keyboards allow you to customize their looks and get the typing feel you prefer. And compact keyboards—which are similar in size and layout to a laptop keyboard—take up less space on your desk.

Of the dozens of keyboards we’ve tested, the 75% Epomaker TH80 Pro and the 65% Epomaker TH66 Pro provide the best typing experience and the most extra features for the price.

Everything we recommend

lightweight travel keyboard

Epomaker TH80 Pro

The best 75% keyboard.

The Epomaker TH80 Pro provides the best typing experience and the most extra features—RGB, hot-swap, wireless, a knob, and programmability—for a surprisingly reasonable price.

Buying Options

lightweight travel keyboard

Epomaker TH66 Pro

The best 65%/68% keyboard.

The Epomaker TH66 Pro offers all the quality and features of the TH80 Pro in a slightly more compact layout that lacks the top row of function keys.

lightweight travel keyboard

Keychron V1

Another great 75% keyboard.

The V1 feels nearly as good to type on as our top pick, and it has most of the same features. But the V1 lacks wireless, and the knob costs extra.

lightweight travel keyboard

Keychron V2

Another great 65% keyboard.

The V2 is virtually identical to the V1, but its 65% layout lacks the top row of function keys.

Budget pick

lightweight travel keyboard

Keychron K6

A starter keyboard.

The 65% Keychron K6 feels better to type on than any other cheap mechanical keyboard, though its keycaps and case don’t look or feel as nice to type on as our top picks’.

You save $25 (29%)

Upgrade pick

lightweight travel keyboard

Keychron Q1 Pro

A fancy 75% keyboard.

The Keychron Q1 Pro has a heavy-duty aluminum case, can connect via Bluetooth, and feels great to type on. But it’s tall, and you can’t adjust the height.

lightweight travel keyboard

Keychron Q2 Pro

A fancy 65% keyboard.

The Q2 Pro has the same quality and features as the Q1 Pro, but it has a 65% layout that does without the top row of function keys.

lightweight travel keyboard

Keychron Q4 Pro

A fancy 60% keyboard.

The Q4 Pro is the 60% version of our upgrade picks. It’s very compact, but it lacks commonly used keys and a rotary knob.

lightweight travel keyboard

Keychron V4

The best 60% keyboard.

The V4 is more compact than our other picks but requires memorizing shortcuts for commonly used keys.

The Epomaker TH80 Pro and Epomaker TH66 Pro feel wonderful to type on due to their thick PBT keycaps, lubricated stabilizers, and sturdy plastic cases. And our picks come with fancy features typically reserved for much more expensive models, including RGB backlighting, hot-swappable switches, wireless connectivity, a rotary knob, and the ability to reprogram keys through Epomaker’s software. The TH80 and TH66 come with keycaps for Windows and Mac and can automatically swap between the two operating system layouts.

If our top picks are unavailable, we recommend the 75% Keychron V1 or the 65% Keychron V2 . These models feel similarly excellent to type on, and have most of the same features. The V1 and V2 offer RGB backlighting, hot-swappable switches, and Windows and Mac keycaps, and they’re even easier to program than our top picks because they support VIA. But they lack wireless and the cool rotary knob costs extra.

The 65% Keychron K6 is the best budget option. Although its thinner ABS keycaps and non-lubricated stabilizers can’t match the typing experience of our top picks, it still feels great to type on and doesn’t make the worst quality tradeoffs typical of cheap mechanical keyboards. The K6 comes with keycaps for Windows and Mac, and it can connect to up to three devices via Bluetooth. The included cable is too short, though, and it’s not fully programmable.

If you want a keyboard with a higher-quality aluminum case and don’t mind paying quite a bit more for it, get the Keychron Q1 Pro , Q2 Pro , or Q4 Pro . These models provide an excellent typing experience and have a ton of extra features: They can connect to up to three devices via Bluetooth, they’re fully programmable using VIA, and they have RGB backlighting and hot-swappable switches. The 75% Q1 Pro and 65% Q2 Pro have a rotary knob, but the 60% Q4 Pro does not. But they all have tall cases with steep slopes that cannot be adjusted, and their tall included keycaps exacerbate this flaw.

The Keychron V4 is the best 60% keyboard due to its build quality and extra features that match our runner-up picks. The V4 is fully programmable in VIA, which is an essential feature for a 60% keyboard that has only the core block of letters, numbers, and modifiers. But this layout isn’t for everyone—you’ll have to retrain yourself to remember key combinations every time you need the arrow or function keys. The V4 lacks a wireless connection, and this layout is not available with a rotary knob.

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, our picks: epomaker th80 pro and epomaker th66 pro, runners-up: keychron v1 and keychron v2, budget pick: keychron k6, upgrade picks: keychron q1 pro, q2 pro, and q4 pro, the best 60% keyboard: keychron v4, other good compact mechanical keyboards, what to look forward to, the competition.

The author's current favorite keyboard, which has a 60% layout and custom keycaps.

I’ve tested hundreds of keyboards for Wirecutter since 2014. In that time, I’ve accumulated at least 15 of my own—this is too many mechanical keyboards! I’ve spent thousands of hours typing on all these different options to land on recommendations for people who need only one keyboard.

Mechanical keyboards can be more enjoyable to type on, more durable, and more customizable than typical laptop or desktop keyboards. If you spend all day typing, it’s very satisfying to customize the size, switches, keycaps, and layout to your exact needs.

Compact keyboards—with 75%, 68% or 65%, and 60% layouts—get progressively smaller by using space more efficiently than traditional keyboards and by ditching less frequently used keys and hiding those functions behind shortcuts. These smaller keyboards allow you to place your mouse closer to your body , which can reduce strain on your shoulders, neck, and back.

We recommend prebuilt keyboards that you can plug in and use immediately, but there’s a whole world of custom mechanical keyboards. Building your own opens up a ton of size, layout, switch, and programmability options, but such keyboards are less readily available and require more tinkering.

Mechanical keyboards bring with them a lot of jargon—layouts and switches and keycap profiles, oh my—and compact keyboards add complexity with their non-standard layouts. Here’s a high-level overview of the terms you need to know to buy the right keyboard for your needs. For even more detail, see our explainer on how to shop for a mechanical keyboard .

An illustration of different compact keyboard layouts.

  • 75%: This layout is similar to most laptop keyboards—it has nearly all the same keys as tenkeyless models, but they’re all smushed together.
  • 65% and 68%: Keyboards of this size ditch the function keys along the top, but keep the arrow keys and a few keys from the navigation cluster.
  • 60%: These boards include only the essential block of letters, numbers, and modifiers—they have no function keys, no arrow or navigation keys, and no numpad. Using a 60% keyboard requires retraining yourself to remember key combinations every time you need the arrow or function keys. You can find even smaller keyboards, but most people need the number row.

Switch options: Mechanical switches come in three main varieties: linear, tactile, and clicky. Linear switches feel smooth when you press them. Tactile switches have a noticeable bump partway through the keypress. And clicky switches feel similar, but have an added click sound to match the tactile bump. If you don’t already have a preference, we recommend tactile Brown switches made by Cherry, Gateron, or Kailh because these popular, readily available switches are good for most tasks and quiet enough for most offices. We cover all the switch varieties in depth in our introductory guide to mechanical keyboards .

Build quality: Cheap keyboards can feel and sound hollow, may flex under regular typing pressure, and tend to have stabilizers that rattle or squeak. Higher-quality keyboards made of metal or thicker plastic will feel sturdy and sound melodious with every keystroke.

A close up of a black keyboard above a grey keyboard.

Keycaps: Keycap profiles define the height and shape of the keycaps in each row. We prefer keycaps made of PBT because they tend to be more durable and develop less shine than keycaps made from ABS, a more lightweight plastic that’s prone to wear. We also like to see a variety of stylish keycap options because it can be trickier to find replacement keycaps for compact keyboards, which don’t usually have ANSI standard keycaps .

Removable cable: A removable USB cable is preferable to a built-in one, because if the cable breaks it’s easier and cheaper to replace than the entire keyboard.

Programmability: Many mechanical keyboards allow you to record macros, remap or customize certain keys, and tweak the backlighting. Some keyboards use switches on the bottom or back of the keyboard to alter the behavior of a few keys. Others offer onboard programming. And still others come with manufacturer-specific software or support VIA , a simple, user-friendly option. For 60% models, full programmability is essential.

Backlight: If a keyboard comes with backlighting, we prefer it to be either a tasteful white or programmable RGB.

Hot-swap switches: On a hot-swappable keyboard, you can simply pull the switches out and snap new ones into place rather than having to desolder old switches and solder in new ones.

Wireless: We look for stable wireless connections that don’t cut out, lag, or cause double-key entries, as well as keyboards that can still work in wired mode when the battery runs out.

We test each keyboard by using it for at least one day of work, which involves lots and lots (and lots) of typing. We pay attention to the quality of the cases and keycaps and explore each keyboard’s customization options. Finally, we use the finalists for several more days of constant typing and test any wireless and Bluetooth connections on Windows and macOS.

The Epomaker TH80 placed above the Epomaker TH66, both backlit by glowing, bright lights.

The 75% Epomaker TH80 Pro and the 65% Epomaker TH66 Pro provide the best typing experience and the most fancy features for their reasonable prices. Both feel wonderful to type on due to their solid construction, thick PBT keycaps, and smooth lubricated stabilizers. And our picks come with extra features including RGB backlighting, hot-swappable switches, wireless connectivity, a rotary knob, and the ability to reprogram keys through Epomaker’s software. The TH80 and TH66 come with keycaps for Windows and Mac and can automatically swap between the two operating system layouts.

The Epomaker TH66 with two keys removed and scattered nearby a key remover tool.

Our picks can be customized without a soldering iron. Both boards are available with a variety of switches, and we recommend starting with Gateron G Pro Brown switches if you don’t already have a preference. Our picks also have hot-swap sockets that support both three- and five-pin switches, so you’ll be able to change out the switches without needing to solder.

The Epomaker TH80 situated above the larger Keychron V1.

Our picks provide a wonderful typing experience for the price. Their thick plastic cases feel sturdy, sound pleasant, and look clean and modern. In our tests the pre-lubed stabilizers in the TH80 Pro and TH66 Pro felt smooth and sounded quiet. Both keyboards have a flat profile with a gentle slope, and our picks each have sturdy feet with two height options.

Four keycaps situated in two rows of two with the bottom keys turned upside down.

The included keycaps look and feel better than most we’ve tested. Our picks’ MDA-profile PBT keycaps are thicker than the ones that come with Keychron’s V-series keyboards, so typing on our picks produces a richer, more melodious “thock” sound. The keycaps feel smooth, and after months of heavy typing they’ve developed minimal surface wear. The TH80 Pro and TH66 Pro have nonstandard right Shift and bottom row keys that you’ll need to look out for if you want to replace your keycaps.

Screenshot of the TH80 Pro software showing the keyboard's ability to be reprogrammed.

The TH80 Pro and TH66 Pro are fully programmable using Epomaker’s software . The software isn’t as intuitive as VIA, and you need to plug in the keyboard to use it, but we were able to use the software to remap keys, change the knob’s behavior, and customize the RGB backlight on both Windows and macOS.

Both our Epomaker picks laying faced down, displaying their plastic feet.

Our picks support three connection types: wired, wireless USB dongle, and Bluetooth. The wireless connections were solid in our testing, and device switching worked smoothly on a variety of devices. The TH80 Pro and TH66 Pro each come with a removable braided USB-C cable, and you always have a wired connection to fall back on. The TH80 Pro has a small slot underneath to store the USB dongle; the TH66 Pro has no such storage.

An assortment of equipment necessary to change out switches or keycaps.

The TH80 Pro and TH66 Pro work on Windows and Mac. When you connect them to a device, both keyboards automatically swap between operating systems—changing the order of the OS keys and the behavior of the function keys in the top row. Our picks also come with keycaps for Windows and macOS, as well as other fun extras.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The built-in batteries aren’t replaceable, but our picks can be used in wired mode. All batteries wear out over time, so eventually the keyboards will no longer hold a charge. Several Wirecutter staffers told me that, even though they thought they wanted a wireless keyboard, they ended up defaulting to the wire rather than worry about whether their keyboard is charged.

The TH66 Pro’s top row has north-facing switches that aren’t compatible with Cherry-profile keycaps, which can present a problem if you want to swap out the keycaps later. (All of the switches in the TH80 Pro are south-facing.) If you need a 65% keyboard with south-facing switches, consider the Keychron V2 instead.

The larger and wider Keychron V1 situated below its smaller and narrower sibling, the Keychron V2

If our top picks are unavailable, we recommend the 75% Keychron V1 or the 65% Keychron V2 . These models feel similarly excellent to type on due to their sturdy cases, durable PBT keycaps, and smooth stabilizers. Our runners-up have RGB backlighting, hot-swappable switches, and Windows and Mac keycaps, and they’re even easier to program than our top picks because they support VIA. But they’re not quite as compact as our top picks, they lack wireless, and the knob costs extra.

The V-series keyboards have hot-swap, but the knob costs extra. We recommend the Keychron K Pro Brown switches, and these models have hot-swap sockets that support both three- and five-pin switches so you can change them later. The V1 and V2 are available with a programmable knob, but Keychron charges $10 extra for it. Keychron also offers two different cases for each layout, called Carbon Black and Frosted Black (the latter of which looks particularly cool with the RGB backlight).

The V1 and V2 feel just as great to type on as our top picks. Their sturdy plastic cases and smooth, lubricated stabilizers are similar in quality to those of our top picks. Both models have flat profiles with gentle slopes, and sturdy feet with two height options. Our runners-up take up a bit more room on a desk than our top picks due to their large bezels, but they’re still notably more compact than keyboards with larger layouts.

A closeup of the right side of the Keychron V1.

The keycaps are thinner, but they’re still durable and have a comfy shape. Keychron’s OSA-profile doubleshot PBT keycaps produced a higher-pitched, less luxurious sound during typing than the keycaps included with our top picks. It’s a very small difference—they’re still durable PBT keycaps, and they don’t feel or sound brittle. The keycap legends also have some subtle inconsistencies in letter size and spacing. Like our top picks, the V1 and V2 also have nonstandard right Shift and bottom-row keys that you’ll need to look out for if you replace your keycaps.

A screenshot of VIA using a Keychron V1.

These models are fully programmable with the easy-to-use VIA software . At the time of our testing, the software didn’t automatically recognize them, but Keychron includes accurate step-by-step instructions for both models on their respective product pages. Once the keyboard appears in the software, you can quickly and easily remap keys, record macros, and customize the RGB backlighting.

A closeup of the corner of the Keychron V1, displaying the USB-C port and mode switch.

The V1 and V2 come with keycaps for Windows and Mac. Both models have a convenient switch on the back left to swap between Windows and Mac layouts, and they come with keycaps for both operating systems. Keychron also includes some useful tools for swapping switches and keycaps in the box.

Neither of our runner-up picks can be used wirelessly. Keychron includes a removable braided USB-C–to–C cable and a C-to-A adapter with both the V1 and V2.

The Keychron K6 compact mechanical keyboard backlit with a green light.

The 65% Keychron K6 is the cheapest decent compact mechanical keyboard—you can’t beat it for the price. With its ABS keycaps, plastic case, and non-lubricated stabilizers, the K6 can’t match the typing experience of our top picks. But it still feels great to type on, and it doesn’t make the most egregious quality trade-offs typical of cheap mechanical keyboards. The K6 comes with keycaps for Windows and Mac, and it can connect to up to three devices via Bluetooth. The included cable is too short, though, and it’s not fully programmable.

The K6 isn’t as customizable as our picks. It has a white-only backlight and hot-swap costs extra. Our budget pick is available with Keychron or Gateron G Pro Brown, Blue, and Red switches. Keychron also offers a hot-swap version that’s compatible with three- and five-pin switches—if you can find that model for around $65, go for it, but if you have to spend more than that you’re better off with one of our top picks.

The K6 isn’t as pleasant to type on as our top picks, but it’s great for a budget board. The K6’s plastic case is sturdy, with no flex, wobble, or ping. Keychron also offers an aluminum frame version, but our top pick is better for that price. The K6’s stabilizers rattle—they don’t match the smooth, quiet ride of our top picks—but not as bad as the unpleasant racket emitted by our previous budget pick, the Qisan Magicforce . The K6 is a bit taller than the TH66 Pro, but it isn’t so tall as to be unwieldy, either. Like our top picks, the K6 has sturdy feet in the back with two height options.

The Keychron K6 situated below the slightly larger Epomaker TH66.

The thinner ABS keycaps feel and sound cheaper, and will wear out sooner. The K6’s OEM-profile are comfortable enough to type on, but they’re of notably lower quality than those of our top picks. Compared with other budget mechanical keyboards with even thinner, more brittle keycaps and hideous legends, the K6’s keycaps feel and look just fine. Like our top picks, the K6 has a non-standard right Shift and bottom row keys to watch out for if you decide to replace the keycaps.

Our budget pick is not fully programmable. You can find a list of its default key combinations on Keychron’s website. Make sure you’re comfortable with the combinations for all your most-used keys before you buy. For example, the delete function is F1 + [, which I find particularly inconvenient.

A closeup of the USB-C port and Windows/Mac and wireless mode switches on the Keychron K6.

The K6 can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth, but its included cable is short. Our budget pick can connect to up to three devices via Bluetooth, and the connection was reliable in our testing. It also comes with a USB-C–to–A cable. This included cable is short—too short to reach across my desk—but you can get an extension cable for cheap.

Like our other picks, the K6 works with Windows and Mac. It comes with keycaps for both operating systems, and it has a switch on the left side to swap between layouts. Keychron also includes a wire keycap puller in the box.

The Keychron Q1 Pro, Q2 Pro, and Q4 Pro lined up vertically on a pink background with their backlights on.

If you want to spend more for a higher-quality aluminum case, get the Keychron Q1 Pro , Q2 Pro , or Q4 Pro . These models feel awesome to type on and have a ton of extra features: They can connect to up to three devices via Bluetooth, they’re fully programmable using VIA, and they have RGB backlighting and hot-swappable switches. The 75% Q1 Pro and 65% Q2 Pro have a rotary knob, while the 60% Q4 Pro does not. But they all have tall keycaps and cases with steep slopes that cannot be adjusted.

The Q Pro keyboards come in fun colors and can be customized. Our upgrade picks are available with Keychron K Pro Brown, Red, and Banana switches—there’s no clicky switch option—and all three support hot-swap for easy upgrades. Keychron offers a few different color cases and keycaps to choose from, or you can order a barebones model if you prefer to bring your own keycaps and switches.

A ground-level view of the ends of a Q Pro and V3 showing their difference in height.

Our upgrade picks provide a top-notch typing experience, but they’re very tall. The Q1 Pro, Q2 Pro, and Q4 Pro all come with heavy, aluminum cases, and their lubricated switches and stabilizers glide smoothly. But compared with our top picks, our upgrade picks have taller cases with steeper slopes, and lack height adjustment options. If you—like me—prefer a keyboard with a more neutral slope, we don’t recommend the Q Pro-series.

A yellow keycap and a taller blue keycap sitting next to each other on a pink background.

The KSA-profile keycaps are also uncomfortably tall. Their height got in the way of the rotary knob on the Q1 Pro, too—I found myself accidentally hitting the Page Up key when adjusting volume. (The Q2 Pro’s offset rotary knob doesn’t have the same problem, though.) We haven’t yet experienced any surface wear on the included PBT keycaps, but the legends have similar inconsistencies to our runner-up pick’s, a flaw that’s less forgivable on a $200 keyboard. The Q1 Pro and Q2 Pro also have nonstandard right Shift and bottom-row keys, like our other picks.

The programming screen for the Q1 Pro.

Our upgrade picks are easy to program using VIA. The Q1 Pro, Q2 Pro, and Q4 Pro weren’t automatically recognized by the software at the time of our testing, but after following these instructions we were able to quickly and easily reprogram the keys, macros, and backlighting.

A close shot of a Q Pro's switches and charging port.

The Q Pro boards can connect via Bluetooth and support both Windows and Mac. Using the physical switches on the back of the keyboard, you can swap between OS layouts and connection types, and all three models come with extra keycaps for both operating systems. Keychron also includes a USB-C-to-C cable with a C-to-A adapter, as well as other tools.

Keychron’s one-year warranty for these models is very limited. If you have an issue, the company “will only replace the defective parts of the keyboard, not the whole keyboard.” This is disappointing service for such expensive keyboards.

The Keychron V4 sitting on a pink surface with its backlight on.

If you prefer an even more compact layout, the Keychron V4 is the best 60% keyboard. The V4 is identical in build quality and features to our runner-up picks: It has a sturdy case, durable PBT keycaps, smooth stabilizers, RGB backlighting, hot-swappable switches, and keycaps for Windows and Mac. It’s also fully programmable in VIA, which is essential for a 60% keyboard that has only the core block of letters, numbers, and modifiers. You have to use shortcuts for arrows, navigation, and function keys. The V4 lacks a wireless connection and is not available with a rotary knob.

Three Keychron V models lined up to show size and key layout differences.

The V4 occupies less desk space, but its 60% layout takes getting used to. This model is about an inch narrower than our runner-up picks because it doesn’t have arrow keys, navigation keys, a function row, or a rotary knob. The 60% layout isn’t for everyone—you’ll have to retrain yourself to remember key combinations every time you need the arrow keys or function keys.

The programming screen for the V4.

The V4 is fully programmable in the easy-to-use VIA software. Full programmability is essential for 60% keyboards because they rely heavily on shortcuts and everyone has different preferences for those shortcuts. Like our runner-up picks, you can quickly and easily remap keys, record macros, and customize the RGB backlighting in VIA.

If you want a fun little screen on your keyboard: The Epomaker TH80-X has an LCD screen that can be customized in Epomaker’s software to display cool animations. Typing on the TH80-X feels and sounds similar to the TH80 Pro; aside from a few aesthetic differences, they’re similar keyboards. But the TH80-X has limited switch variety—it does have hot-swap so you can change them later—and it doesn’t come with keycaps for Windows and Mac.

If you can’t find our top picks: The 75% Keychron K2 Pro , 65% K6 Pro , and 60% K12 Pro are also good compact mechanical keyboards with PBT keycaps, hot-swap switches, and support for Bluetooth and VIA. They feel nearly as nice to type on as our top picks, but tend to be more expensive, lack rotary knobs, and are comparatively a bit tall. And, like our budget pick, all three K Pro models come with cables that are too short to reach across most desks. (But you can get an extension cable for cheap.)

If you want a budget board with more keys: The Keychron K14 is nearly identical to our budget pick, but with an extra column of keys along the right side. (It has a standard right Shift key, but its bottom row still has nonstandard 1u keys.)

If you’re looking for per-key RGB: Our upgrade picks lack per-key backlight controls at the time of writing, but the Razer BlackWidow V4 75% has RGB backlighting that can be fully customized using Razer’s Synapse software. The BlackWidow V4 provides an enjoyable typing experience; it’s only available with tactile switches, but it has hot-swap so you can change them out easily. It lacks wireless, and it’s only available with ABS keycaps and Windows legends.

If you want replacement keycaps: Keychron sells PBT keycap sets for compact layouts—we tested some, and they’re a good starting point for the price. They include OS keys for Windows and macOS, but be sure to double-check your keyboard’s layout against the keycaps provided.

If you need a number pad: The Epomaker TH21 is the best basic number pad. It’s available in two versions, a cheaper, wired-only model and a more expensive wireless version that can also connect via USB dongle and Bluetooth. The TH21 feels excellent to type on, it has PBT keycaps and an RGB backlight, and you can program macros using the Epomaker software.

A fancier number pad: The Keychron Q0 Plus has the same excellent build quality as our upgrade picks, and it’s considerably more customizable than the TH21. Because it’s fully programmable using VIA, you can set up the Q0 Plus as a macro pad of frequently used shortcuts. It also has five extra macro keys and a rotary knob, but it lacks a wireless connection.

Keychron has launched the V1 Max , a new version of our runner-up pick with 2.4 Ghz and Bluetooth wireless connections. We also plan to test the Drop Alt V2 , which has hot-swap support for both 3- and 5-pin switches, upgraded stabilizers, and VIA support.

At CES 2024, many companies announced new compact mechanical keyboards with stylish designs and interesting new features. The $140 Cidoo V75 Pro , the $130 Cidoo V65 V2 , and the $200 Alienware Pro Wireless Keyboard are available now, and we’ll test them for our next update.

Keychron also announced the Q1 HE , a $220 mechanical keyboard with magnetic Hall effect switches that allow features like customizable actuation points and analog inputs. We plan to test this model—and the new software Keychron is building to customize it—once it ships in April.

We spent some time with Epomaker’s DynaTab 75X , a flashy mechanical keyboard with a customizable dot matrix LED screen along the top. The company plans to launch this model on Kickstarter, but we’ll test it once it’s available at retail for $150.

We plan to test the $160 Cherry Xtrfy K5V2 when it’s available in March, the $170 HyperX Alloy Rise 75 when it’s available in spring, and the $70 Lenovo Legion K510 Pro Mini Keyboard when it’s available in June.

The Epomaker EP84 Plus is an excellent budget option, but it’s only available with linear switches and pink and purple keycaps.

The KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 is pretty, but it’s difficult to keep clean—despite coming with the largest microfiber cloth I’ve ever seen—and its switch variety is limited.

The OnePlus Keyboard 81 Pro is similar to our upgrade pick with a different case. It’s available with fewer switch and color options, and the version with linear switches and “Marble-mallow” keycaps is unpleasant.

The Keychron Q1 V2 is similar to our upgrade pick, but it lacks wireless.

The Asus ROG Azoth doesn’t feel as nice to type on as our picks and the Armoury Crate software is excruciatingly slow and unreliable.

The Drop Sense75 is expensive for a keyboard with ABS keycaps, inconsistent keycap legends, and gritty-feeling switches.

The Keychron K2 V2 has ABS keycaps, doesn’t match the build quality of our picks, and comes with a short cable.

The Epomaker EP75 doesn’t feel as nice to type on as our top picks, and we had issues with the Bluetooth connection. The Epomaker EP84 has worse build quality than the TH80 Pro, and it lacks a knob and a wireless connection.

The Vortex Tab 75 lacks hot-swap switches, a backlight, a knob, and full programmability. The Vortex Race 3 lacks wireless and has a nonstandard Esc key.

The Vissles V84 has cheaper ABS keycaps and lower-quality Outemu switches.

Despite having a cute design, a decent price, replaceable batteries, and a reliable wireless connection, the Logitech Pop Keys ’s circular keys aren’t a great fit for a mechanical keyboard. After weeks of using it, I still struggle to type accurately on it.

65% and 68%

The Cooler Master CK720 felt lovely to type on, but it slides around easily and its hard plastic feet scratched my desk. Its rotary knob is difficult to use without hitting the delete key.

The Ducky One 2 SF lacks hot-swap switches and full programmability. The Ducky One 3 SF has hot-swap, but it’s expensive and isn’t fully programmable.

The Leopold FC660M and its Bluetooth sibling, the Leopold FC660MBT , lack hot-swap and volume controls, and the boards are not fully programmable. The Leopold FC660C is similar. Its Topre switches are delightful to type on, but it’s bonkers-expensive, it lacks the features of our picks, and it’s not compatible with most third-party keycap sets.

The Keychron Q2 is similar to our upgrade picks, but it lacks wireless.

Compared with our upgrade picks, the Drop Alt lacks wireless, its stabilizers don’t feel as smooth, it doesn’t come with Mac keycaps, and it’s not compatible with five-pin switches.

Compared with our budget pick, the Qisan Magicforce ’s case feels hollow and cheap, its keycap legends are ugly (unless you’re lucky enough to snag one of the few with PBT keycaps), and it lacks warranty coverage.

The LTC Nimbleback ’s switches feel grittier than our budget pick’s and it lacks wireless.

The HyperX Alloy Origins 65 doesn’t feel as nice to type on as our top picks and has a more limited switch selection.

The Asus ROG Falchion Ace lacks hot-swap and has ABS keycaps. The Asus ROG Falchion and Asus ROG Falchion NX are expensive and also lack features.

The Meko Push doesn’t feel as nice to type on as our picks, and it has ABS keycaps.

The Womier K66 and Womier K68 are pretty but have brittle-feeling ABS keycaps, rattly stabilizers, and cases that flex under typing pressure.

The Cooler Master CK721 comes with lower-quality TTC switches and ABS keycaps, and it lacks hot-swap.

The Epomaker NT68 had uneven feet and wobbled aggressively during typing. It also came with a teeny-tiny USB cable that seemed designed to plug into a nearby laptop, not a computer a couple of feet away.

The Ducky x Varmilo Miya Pro is expensive and lacks hot-swap and wireless.

The Razer BlackWidow V3 Mini HyperSpeed has rattly stabilizers and cheap ABS keycaps, and it’s available with only clicky or linear switches.

The Vortex Cypher felt hollow and cheap to type on. It has an ugly keycap font, too, and it doesn’t come with a manual.

The low-profile Keychron K7 feels shallow and unpleasant to type on, and it had an unreliable wireless connection and poor battery life.

The Anne Pro 2 is fully programmable but lacks hot-swap and can’t match the typing experience of the Keychron V4.

The HyperX Alloy Origins 60 has a rattly space bar and lacks hot-swap. It’s fully programmable, but the Windows-only Ngenuity software is not as intuitive as VIA.

The Fujitsu HHKB Pro 3 Hybrid is a great Topre keyboard that’s fully programmable—and easy to program—and equipped with Bluetooth support. But it’s expensive, and the classic HHKB layout lacks keys in the bottom left and bottom right of the keyboard.

The Kinesis Gaming TKO is ridiculously complicated to reprogram.

The following models lack full programmability: Ducky One 3 Mini , Ducky One 2 Mini , Razer Huntsman Mini , Epomaker EP64 , Corsair K70 Pro Mini Wireless , Keychron K12 , Vortex Tab 60 , Vortex Pok3r , Fujitsu HHKB Pro 3 Classic , and Cooler Master SK620 .

Moscow always captivate me with its beautiful buildings! I really would like to visit it and maybe stay there for couple of weeks. Anyone knows if it's safe for solo female traveller? Is the Metro safe at night? Is the Kremlin area safe to walk around alone? Is 1 week enough to go around Moscow and St. Petersburg? Thanks!^^

Might be better to also ask in the Moscow forum.

Also check visa requirements and limitations. They can be challenging.

If you do go, both cities have Global Greeters programs. You need to arrange there a few weeks before travel, but planning this soon after arrival should give you an idea of the city and at least one other person you will know.
