Just a short distance from the Manitou Incline and the Iron Springs Chateau, Miramont Castle invites excited guests from all over to get a taste of Victorian life through its beautiful collection of artifacts. And the architecture? Absolutely stunning.

The castle is over 14,000 feet of unique design, including eight-sided and sixteen-sided rooms, a solarium, a grand staircase and a variety of details both big and small that capture the eye. In the summer, enjoy the castle’s well-tended garden, filled with flowers and plants and offering ample opportunities to capture photos. All this, plus its arched doors, rich wood trim, antique décor and other features combine to create a delightful surprise conveniently located above Manitou Springs.

Your ticket to Miramont Castle won’t just get you a look inside this historic architectural marvel, you’ll also be treated to fascinating exhibits that highlight snapshots of history here and abroad. Check out vintage fire equipment, explore war memorabilia, examine mid-1800s maps and even look at photos from the twelfth Nuremberg trial, which was presided over by Colorado Springs’ John C. Young. It’s history within history!

When you’re all finished, you can relax with a spot of tea in the Queen’s Parlour Tearoom, a lushly appointed Victorian tea room that offers delicious teas, homemade scones, fresh cream and heartier fare. Reservations are required for High Tea and Light Tea, so be sure to book your tea 24 hours before you visit. Miramont Castle Museum

I love a good house tour so when I was in Colorado Springs , I stopped in at the Miramont Castle Museum .

Miramont Castle History

Miramont Castle is interesting in that it’s built right into the hillside. Cars parked on the street behind are right at the house’s roofline! The mansion was built in 1895 by Catholic Priest Jean Baptiste Francolon for him and his wealthy French mother. While it’s primarily a Victorian house, you can see a variety of architectural styles are used, from Gothic windows to Tudor beams to crenulated castle-like walls.

The Francolons left abruptly for France by 1900, where the mother died soon after. By 1904, the Sisters of Mercy started using it as a tuberculosis sanitarium until 1927, then for various other uses until they sold it in 1946. Then it was broken up into apartments and rented through the ’50s-’70s. In 1976, Miramont Castle was placed on the National Historic Register and restored for use as a museum.

Miramont Castle

Visiting Miramont Castle

If you want to visit Miramont Castle, it’s a five-minute walk slightly uphill from the main downtown Manitou Springs area, or there are two small parking lots adjacent to the house. It doesn’t get a ton of visitors, so I was able to park to the side of the house where there are about five spots. For more parking, drive to the left and up behind the house for a larger parking lot. (This lot is the site of Father Francolon’s first house, which he then donated to the Sisters of Mercy for their first sanitarium. There is still an original tuberculosis isolation hut up here.)

Walk in the front door to buy your tickets. There’s also a small bathroom nearby, and two bathrooms on the third floor. At the front desk, they’ll give you a sheet for your self-guided tour. There are also framed information boards in most rooms (though they don’t seem the most up-to-date.)

Not only is the house refurbished as a Victorian home, but there are also rooms dedicated to general Manitou Springs history. At the start of the tour is a Fire Department Museum in the original basement. Later, there’s a “Spoils of War” exhibit, the Nuremberg trials, and a room of local history.

First Floor

The first floor of Miramont Castle is kind of the basement, though there is a beautiful front door and entry. The ticket desk is straight ahead, the bathroom to the left, and the Fire Museum to the right. A set of stairs leads to the second floor to continue the tour.

Miramont Castle

Second Floor

At the top of the stairs is a grand Victorian parlor with a huge stone fireplace, dug seven feet into the side of the mountain. (Which I apparently did not get a picture of!! Arg.) Miramont Castle also features a Tea Room, which is on this floor in the old greenhouse.

Continuing the tour takes you through small kitchen and dining areas and into an eastern addition that features a grand staircase and a chapel. The large chapel used to be Father Francolon’s dining room, and a small smoking room/office is to one side. There’s also a set of rooms set up to display the offices of Judge Young, a Colorado Native. (I can’t find evidence of a U.S. Supreme Court Justice named Young, so it must be the Colorado Supreme Court.)

Miramont Castle

Third Floor

At the top of the grand staircase to the third floor is a large solarium. This room used to have a glass roof for even more light, which served as a conservatory for the Francolons and a surgery suite for the Sisters of Mercy. There’s a public bathroom off this room.

A 16-sided room serves as a guest suite, while a corridor holds Maria Francolon’s rooms, including a sitting room, large bathroom, and bedroom. A grand hall serves as a picture gallery for a local Manitou Springs artist. A large tower room on the end is Father Francolon’s bedroom, with one room of the suite turned into a local history museum. Another small bathroom is located in Farther Francolon’s room.

Miramont Castle

There is a fourth floor with a gift shop and what was the servant’s quarters. Unfortunately, I did not pay attention to the time and got booted out promptly at the 4 pm closing time! Due to the nature of how the house is built in the mountain, there is ground-floor access on every level. Normally, you would proceed up another staircase to a tower room and exit into the Victorian gardens near the top-level parking deck, where you can see an old tuberculosis hut.

On the second floor of Manitou Castle is the Queen’s Parlor Tea Room with its own entrance on the side. It’s open Tuesday-Sunday in two seatings, 11:00-12:30 and 1:00-2:30, and reservations are required. High Tea is $45 per person (though that includes taxes and tips) and comes with two flavors of tea, scones, fruit, sandwiches, and desserts. A Light Victorian Tea for $35 loses one pot of tea and the fruit course, and for $30, your children can join the fun with a kid-friendly prince/princess tea. And with tea, you are eligible for $1 off a castle tour.

Miramont Castle

Hours & Tickets

Manitou Springs definitely seems to be a town that rolls up its sidewalks around 4-5 pm at night. I found a restaurant and coffee shop still open in the evening but not much else! Likewise, the Miramont Castle Museum is open from 10-4 Tuesday-Sunday, with final entry at 3:30 pm.

Tickets cost $14 for adults, $13 for seniors 60+, and $10 for kids 4-12, with 3 and under free. You can also get in free with an active military ID or active firefighter ID. And it’s $1 off those prices if you have tea in the tea room.

Looking to explore the best castles in Colorado? If so, keep reading!

You might not know it, but there are loads of great castles in Colorado! Colorado is absolutely packed with incredible castles.

Although you might not expect Colorado has many wonderful castles, our extensive list covering the best castles in Colorado is sure to prove you wrong!

miramont castle tours

Each spot on our list of the best castles in Colorado is incredibly unique, so we won’t be presenting these Coloradoan gems in any particular order.

Which castles in Colorado you choose to visit will depend entirely upon your itinerary. Of course, you can plan an entire vacation based around castle-hopping, but if you’re short on time, you should be able to slot a castle visit into your schedule for a wonderful day out.

So, without further ado, let’s explore the best castles in Colorado that will have you feeling like a bona fide royal!

What are the best castles in Colorado?

Bishop castle.

The first place on our list of the best castles in Colorado is Bishop Castle . This beautiful castle is among the most popular castles in Colorado, and its backstory is as impressive as its exterior.

Built by a man called Jim Bishop, this unique castle was a labor of love. Believe it or not, Bishop wanted to build a castle from the ripe old age of 15 and wouldn’t stop until his vision was realized. Described by many as elaborate yet intricate, this castle in Colorado has become one of the must-visit attractions in the state.

Now, you may be surprised by what you see at this castle. Unlike typical European castles, Bishop Castle is much less ornate. However, it features all the turrets, brickwork, and impressive features that you’d expect from castles in Colorado.

If you’re short on time, we’d recommend heading straight for the stained-glass windows as they’re a sight to behold and shouldn’t be missed. A fantastic choice for castles in Colorado.

Castles in Colorado: Glen Eyrie Castle

If you’re on the hunt for the best castles in Colorado, then be sure to visit Glen Eyrie Castle . This castle gives off that classical, fairytale vibe, which is why it’s considered one of the best castles in Colorado.

Although plenty of people only visit this castle in passing, you can actually stay overnight at the Glen Eyrie Castle if you wish to. As a fully-functioning hotel and conference center, this castle in Colorado has 700-acres, and over 95 guest rooms available.

The rooms certainly aren’t cheap, but if you’ve got some cash to spare it’s well worth staying for the night. This is a must-visit choice for castles in Colorado.

Miramont Castle

Next on our list of castles in Colorado, it’s Miramont Castle. Located in Manitou Springs, Miramont Castle is certainly one of the best castles in Colorado.

If you’re looking to hit more than one castle during your trip to Colorado, then we highly recommend pairing a visit to Miramont Castle with Glen Eyrie Castle.

These two wonderful castles in Colorado are relatively close to one another, so you can really kill two birds with one stone here!

As well as being one of the most aesthetically pleasing castles in Colorado, Miramont Castle also offers an afternoon tea that is out of this world.

Served in the Queen’s Parlor Tea Room, guests are treated to a traditional afternoon tea with all the trimmings. Be warned that the tea is extremely popular, so booking in advance is a must. This is a great choice for castles in Colorado to visit.

miramont castle tours

Dunafon Castle

Dunafon Castle’s beauty has made it one of the best castles in Colorado for weddings. Built in 1941, this beautiful spot primarily hosts private events and celebrations.

If you’re not here for a wedding, never fear! You can still enjoy the 140-acre castle that is perched near Bear Creek. The folks that work here are incredibly friendly, and they’ll be more than happy to help you explore the trails and gardens located on the property. We think you’ll love visiting this option for castles in Colorado.

The castle itself is obviously a major draw, but the grounds and courtyards are almost as impressive as the main building.

Offering visitors plenty to do and modeled after the ancient Celtic Castles of yesteryear, this is by far one of the best castles in Colorado to check out.

miramont castle tours

Castles in Colorado: Westminster Castle

One of the older additions to our list of the best castles in Colorado is Westminster Castle . Built back in 1892, this famous castle is 175 feet of red rock goodness.

As well as providing fantastic views of Denver, Westminster Castle is also on the National Register of Historic Places. Some folks want to tick off each site during their lifetime, so be sure to check out Westminster Castle if that’s one of your goals!

There isn’t that much to do in the surrounding area, but we recommend dedicating a couple of hours to exploring this majestic castle. This is a great addition to our list of castles in Colorado.

miramont castle tours

Falcon Castle

Falcon Castle is next on our list of castles in Colorado. Falcon Castle in Colorado is a relatively new entrant to the castle game, but it’s made its mark since being erected in 1909 by John Brisben Walker. It’s one of the newer castles in Colorado.

Although we’d like to say that it’s still fully intact, this is one of the castles in Colorado that’s taken a bit of a beating. Back in 1918, there was a pretty gnarly lightning storm that destroyed the castle.

However, it did leave some impressive ruins that still draws crowds year after year. With guided tours on offer and several exterior walls available for viewing, Falcon Castle remains one of the finest castles in Colorado.

Redstone Castle

Some people confuse Redstone Castle with Westminster Castle, but these two beautiful castles in Colorado couldn’t be more different.

Redstone Castle was built back in 1902, so it’s one of the older castles in Colorado that you can visit.

In our opinion, what makes this one of the most special castles in Colorado is its famous guest list. Many well-known people have walked through the castle’s halls, but the most prolific is President Teddy Roosevelt!

If you want to join these famous faces by staying the night, you’re more than welcome to. Just be aware that prices can be pretty steep.

We think you’ll love visiting this choice for castles in Colorado.

Castles in Colorado: Cherokee Ranch and Castle

If you’re on the hunt for castles in Colorado that give off that old-world vibe, then the Cherokee Ranch and Castle should be at the top of your list.

Despite being built in 1924, this incredible castle looks as though it was constructed several centuries ago.

The building is in near-perfect condition, but the architecture is reminiscent of old-fashioned, 15 th century Scottish castles. It’s a great choice for castles in Colorado.

Taking up an impressive 3,400 acres in Sedalia, this is one of the best castles in Colorado for anyone who wants to live out their medieval fantasies.

miramont castle tours

Richthofen Castle

Next on our list of castles in Colorado, it’s Richthofen Castle . It may sound as though it’s located in Bavaria, but it’s actually one of the most popular castles in Colorado! If you’re a fan of murder mysteries, then you’ll adore this castle.

It’s said that this was the site of a famous murder case back in 1911, where Charles Patterson was shot in a supposed case of self defence.

The case was eventually resolved, but there remains a slightly spooky atmosphere at Richthofen Castle that we can’t get enough of.

As another one of the castles in Colorado on the National Register of Historic Places, this spot is a must-visit.

miramont castle tours

Cano’s Castle

Another great choice for castles in Colorado, is Cano’s Castle. If you happen to be visiting Antonito, then Cano’s Castle is an area that should definitely feature on your to-do list.

It may not be as beautiful as some of the other castles in Colorado, but Cano’s Castle is a unique landmark that’s definitely worth a visit.

Believe it or not, this castle was built by a single man named Donald Espinoza. He literally constructed this place out of beer cans, as he wanted to make use of the junk that was constantly outside his house.

Hey, it’s certainly one way to reduce, reuse, and recycle! As one of the most unique castles in Colorado, you need to pay this place a visit.

We hope that our list of the best castles in Colorado has inspired you to live out your fairytale dreams on your next vacation!

As you can see, each castle on this list offers something unique to visitors, so you can easily visit all of them and never get bored.

If you’ve visited any of the castles in Colorado, what did you think of them? We’d love to know which castles in Colorado were among your favorites!
