Woody harrelson captains a sinking ship in triangle of sadness trailer.

A brand-new trailer drops for the Ruben Östlund dark-comedy film and Palme d'Or winner Triangle of Sadness, which stars Woody Harrelson.

A brand-new trailer for Triangle of Sadness, the dark-comedy satire film and Palme d'Or winner from Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund and starring Woody Harrelson , releases. Alongside Harrelson, Triangle of Sadness features a supporting cast that includes Harris Dickinson ( The King's Man ), Charlbi Dean ( Black Lightning ), Vicki Berlin, Zlatko Burić, Oliver Ford Davies, Iris Berben, Dolly de Leon, Sunnyi Melles, and Henrik Dorsin. The story revolves around celebrity model couple Carl (Dickinson) and Yaya (Dean) as they're invited to join a luxury cruise for the extremely wealthy, helmed by an unhinged ship captain. However, things take a turn for the worse when the boat begins to capsize, and the passengers find themselves stranded on an island.

Now, a brand-new trailer for Triangle of Sadness released by NEON puts the spotlight on the eccentric passengers of the cruise ship and its captain, played by Harrelson. The trailer begins with Carl taking part in an uncomfortable photoshoot before he receives a free invitation to a yacht for the super-rich, where he and his influencer girlfriend Yaya are introduced to their snobby co-passengers and their flashy personalities. As the trailer progresses, what starts as an Instagram-ready adventure takes a dark turn, as a chain of bizarre, gross-out events ultimately conclude with the ship getting capsized. Check out the full trailer below:

Triangle of Sadness has generated plenty of buzz since its premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation. The film marked Östlund's second Palme d'Or win as well, after he first claimed the highly coveted prize for the 2014 drama film The Square, which featured The Handmaid's Tale star Elizabeth Moss and Dominic West. The acclaimed director's films are known for their striking commentary, which challenge social hierarchies, and the above trailer suggests that Triangle of Sadness will be looking to continue that trend. Audiences can check out Triangle of Sadness when the film makes its theatrical debut on October 7.

On Location: How ‘Death on the Nile’ Built a Full Size River Cruise Ship on Set

By Meredith Carey

Back when it was first published in 1937, Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile, which follows mustachioed detective Hercule Poirot on a mystery-filled steamboat cruise down the famed Egyptian river , inspired travelers near and far to experience the Nile for themselves. (Hopefully, with less murder.) We don't doubt that Kenneth Branagh's silver screen interpretation of the classic novel will do the same—thanks, in part, to the to-scale river cruise ship production designer Jim Clay and his team built on set.

Yes, the film's fictional Karnak steamboat was built full size in a U.K. studio parking lot, with everything from the spacious, two-story lounge at the bow to the cabins in the rear decked out in opulent Art Deco design. We sat down with Clay to get the inside scoop on what inspired them to build out the ship, his favorite place on the Karnak to sneak off to during filming, and the places in Egypt that inspired the Death on the Nile 's sets. Read on to get insight into how Clay's team built a river cruise ship from scratch in just seven months, and take a peak at exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the Karnak in action.

See the Karnak and star-studded cast of Death on the Nile in theaters starting February 11.

Why did you choose to build a full set rather than, say, film on an existing ship or create rooms on a soundstage?

Mostly because of Sir Kenneth [Brannagh’s] shooting style . He likes to shoot on composite sets, composite worlds, so that he's not confined to a cabin set for this scene and a lounge set for that scene. We originally looked at the potential of some real boats to shoot on, but frankly, we realized very quickly that there was nothing of the scale, the period, or the style that we wanted. So we decided to build. Originally we were going to build [the Karnak ] in the U.K., and then dismantle it and take it to Ouarzazate, Morocco, and float it on a real lake there. It was quite a daunting thing. But ultimately, we looked at what advancements had been made in digital water and we got this call from Ken saying, we're not going to float it on the lake but we're going to build it on a railway track in the carpark of our studio in Surrey. It was quite a welcome phone call.

[The Karnak ] was on that track so that we could move it in and out of the stage, according to the weather and what scenes we were doing. We also built a partial tank along one side, so while it wasn't actually floating in the water, it was on the railway tracks that butted right up to it. When the cast had their first experience of boarding the boat, they approached it from the water side, so it was as if they were boarding from the Nile.

Ali Fazal as Andrew Katchadourian Letitia Wright as Rosalie Otterbourne and Sophie Okonedo as Salome Otterbourne in 20th...

The ship could be rolled in and out of the studio to give actors Ali Fazal, Letitia Wright, and Sophie Okonedo (from left) a real-world cruising experience.

When you were looking at period-correct ships for inspiration, what were the key elements of river cruises that you wanted to make sure were represented in the ship you were building in 2019?

The biggest thing was getting the scale right. The Cunard Line at that time had several boats floating on the Nile and we looked very carefully at their drawings. We got a scale that suited us from the larger end of that fleet of boats and we built it with three decks so that Ken could do his tracking shots from one level to another and out of a cabin down the deck, into a bar, back up on the deck again. He takes whatever you give him in terms of a set—my gosh, he really takes advantage of it and uses every inch.

When you look back at that set, what parts of the ship make you particularly proud?

Although it was a boat with cabins and corridors, we tried to make it partially open plan as well. So that a double height sun lounge at the front of the boat, which then looked down onto a mezzanine level, and then looked down to a dining area with a stage and area for the band, which connected to the front of the boat, that was a lovely, opulent, and glamorous space to sit. Often when the crew was shooting on the stages somewhere I would go and sit in that lounge—especially if it was sunny. It was a very peaceful and calming area to be in.

The ship's central lounge, pictured here, was Clay's favorite hideaway onboard.

It usually takes well over a year to build a functioning cruise ship these days. What was the build-out process like for the Karnak?

We had about seven months to design and build the boat. I had an amazing team and an amazing art department team led by Dominic Masters, supervising art director, and we worked with the construction team, led by John Bohan, an immensely skillful guy. I was obviously most concerned with the quality of the finishes and the marble and the Art Deco furniture. John was concerned about the weight of the boat, because he bought these wheels for the railway track that had a limit of something around about 240 tonnes. So as we got close to completing the structure, and more and more equipment was coming on board, John was weighing everything as it went on board so we didn't supersede the weight limit.

While most of the movie’s action happens on board, there are scenes in London, in Aswan, Egypt, and beyond. What was the research like for the sets in those scenes?

There's a lot of research available there, archives and photographic archives, which was immensely helpful. But we went out there—Ken, Haris [Zambarloukos, the director of photography], and Matthew Jenkins, the producer—for a few days, to Cairo and to Abu Simbel. We spent a lot of time at Abu Simbel and I spent a lot of time measuring. We did briefly consider shooting at Abu Simbel, but obviously there are many logistical nightmares, not least the heat. It was immensely hot. So again, we decided to build that back on the studio lot in Surrey. We built it full scale but not out of stone, out of polystyrene and plaster with tons of sand. Plus, we took a trip along the Nile just to get the feel of it.

What was the experience of floating along and seeing all that incredible Egyptian history along the Nile?

It's another world, isn't it? It's sort of, in a way, equivalent to Venice. Venice has an unreality to it. You approach Venice and you think, there it is, floating jewel-like just off the coast of reality. And I think there's something similar about the Nile. Those temples and the history, it's awe-inspiring. And we felt that, even though we were just in a little dhow going up and down the Nile. And there's a sort of silence as well. Somehow you can sense the past through the silence. It's unlike the world we occupy normally in our day-to-day lives in these big cities. It was thrilling.

For those who haven’t been able to experience it for themselves, what do you hope they take away from the sets you’ve created in the movie?

Go to the movie and experience that journey because I think the way Ken and Haris have shot the movie, you feel you're there, you feel you're on board that ship. And then take the journey of your lifetime and go. Start in Cairo and make your way down the Nile. It's well worth it. It's something that should be done in all people's lives, if at all possible.

Woody Harrelson Helms a Yacht for the Ultra-Rich in Triangle of Sadness

NEON has released the trailer for Triangle of Sadness, a comedic, nauseating satire of the ultra-rich and famous.

'The ship is going under.' Watch Woody Harrelson helm a $250 million luxury yacht for the uber-rich in the new trailer for Triangle of Sadness from Neon. Harris Dickinson stars in the film, which sees him as a male model at the prime of his career. He makes his way to the massive super yacht, and things are going excellent until the gross-out, over-the-top shenanigans that will ensue in the movie.

Despite receiving the Palme d'Or, Triangle of Sadness sparked walkouts at the Cannes Film Festival, according to The Age . One 15-minute scene involves graphic vomiting and defecation following some gooey oysters, champagne, and a fair amount of sea sickness. You catch a small glimpse of it in the trailer, but the full-fledged version is sure to be too much for some audiences.

Triangle of Sadness will be the third film in a row to be a Palme d'Or winner for Neon, following Titane and Parasite . The movie makes its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month before sailing into theaters on Oct 7. Watch the brand-new, excessively nauseating trailer below.

Director Ruben Östlund is Looking to Widen His Audience

Ruben Östlund is the filmmaker behind Triangle of Sadness , and he's had success in the industry before. However, until now, Östlund was prominent in European arthouse cinema, with foreign language films to his credit thus far. The director is making a big jump to a film primarily in English. The director wants to broaden his audience and bring his movies to a global scale while maintaining his initial fan base. He tells IndieWire , 'it's been very important to try to keep that audience and step it up, make it a little bit bigger, of course.'

"My intention was to shock the audience as much as I always want to shock the audience. But I was scared to lose my old audience. I was scared to lose the kind of connection I had built up with the distributors of the European arthouse cinema. It's been very important for me to try to keep that audience and step it up, make it a little bit bigger, of course."

Östlund is no stranger to the Palme d'Or either, as he's won in the past for his film The Square starring Elisabeth Moss . The movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, proving that the director can consistently make great projects. Audiences are hoping for something just as hysterical when Triangle of Sadness lands in theaters later this year, on Oct 7.

'Triangle of Sadness' and 9 More Must-See Boat Disaster Movies

"You're gonna need a bigger boat."

Movies love to weaponize the world around us, often turning everyday items and vehicles into killing machines capable of massive destruction. Final Destination has built a franchise around freak accidents , while other movies' plots center around the impact and aftermath of these incidents. Whether its planes, trains, or automobiles, film and television characters are never safe from an elaborate disaster sequence.

RELATED: 15 Great Thriller Movies That Will Make You Afraid of the Ocean

While the best disaster movies often subject their cast to accidents on an outrageous scale, not every movie about cursed voyages offers large-scale disaster. When looking at movies set on boats in particular, some of the most harrowing and disastrous trips involve little actual destruction. It is the feeling of isolation, being alone at sea that is the real fear, as all manner of dangers can reveal themselves when no one else is around to stop them. The most popular maritime disaster movie—many would call it the gold standard—is of course, Titanic , but there's so much more to be discovered.

1 'Triangle of Sadness' (2022)

A recent critical success that has found itself nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, Triangle of Sadness is a dark comedy that takes a bite out of high society . Set aboard a luxury cruise ship, the film follows an ensemble cast of characters comprised of guests and crew, each dealing with their own problems in their own self-absorbed way.

Needless to say things quickly escalate, and after a storm hits the ship, alongside another threat, the spoiled rich folk find themselves needing to fend for themselves for the first time. Those who are easily nauseated by bodily fluids might want to skip this one as the movie's most memorable sequence involves a literal fountain of excrement .

2 'All Is Lost' (2013)

A survival story based on one man's determination while stranded at sea, All Is Lost stars Robert Redford as its unnamed protagonist. The film opens with the man's boat flooding with water after colliding with a shipping container, and from there it follows his desperate attempts to stay alive as the situation grows increasingly dire.

Being the only actor in the film, everything relies on Redford's shoulders, and thankfully the veteran delivers one of the best performances of his career in his twilight years. It is a performance that relies on physical acting as only 51 words are spoken throughout the film, and Redford manages to endear himself to us despite being a mostly silent protagonist.

3 'The Perfect Storm' (2000)

Released long before the age of infinite documentary shows that follow the lives of fishing crews, The Perfect Storm follows one such crew as they head out to bring in a much-needed haul during disastrous weather. It is not long before the shipmates find themselves in over their heads, as the very real risk of dying at sea presents itself.

Based on a creative non-fiction book of the same name, The Perfect Storm showcases the hazards that fishermen face as they try to make a living, asking if the potential spoils outweigh the constant danger. It is a basic story, but it is bolstered by a great cast that is led by George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg , and some impressive visual effects for the time.

4 'Project Wolf Hunting' (2022)

Pitched as Con Air on a boat, Project Wolf Hunting is set aboard a cargo ship that has been transformed to house prisoners as they are transported from the Philippines to South Korea. It does not take long for the prisoners to take control of the ship, but when a new threat emerges, the criminals and the police are soon forced to work together.

Another fine addition to the great horror scene in South Korea, Project Wolf Hunting is an extravaganza of gore. The halls of the ship are literally flooded with blood as guns and knives mutilate the cast, creating a must-watch for horror fans. The story also offers enough twists to keep viewers invested as the film's true villain shifts multiple times.

5 'Dead Calm' (1989)

A cult classic from Australia, Dead Calm follows married couple John ( Sam Neill ) and Rae Ingram ( Nicole Kidman ). After losing their son in an accident, the grieving parents vacation on their yacht to try and find some peace. They soon rescue Hughie ( Billy Zane ), a man stranded at sea who claims his ship sunk. Once aboard, however, Hughie reveals dark intentions as he brings harm to the couple.

Exploring the idea that sometimes the most dangerous things at sea are the people on board with you, Dead Calm is an effective thriller as it makes the most of its claustrophobic setting. All three leads deliver great performances, with Zane in particular proving effective as the sociopathic Hughie.

6 'Ghost Ship' (2002)

A classic of the early 2000s Blockbuster era, many children were first introduced to the horror genre after convincing their parents to rent Ghost Ship . The film follows a crew of salvagers as they board an abandoned cruise ship in search of treasure, instead only finding supernatural evil and a gruesome demise.

Despite some decent death scenes, Ghost Ship is a mostly forgettable haunted house movie at sea. Only the film's opening scene has kept it popular among genre fans, as its prologue involving the ship's guests being dismembered by a rogue wire cord is a notoriously gruesome moment that lives rent-free in gore hounds' heads.

7 'The Poseidon Adventure' (1972)

A classic of the disaster genre, The Poseidon Adventure follows the passengers of a cruise ship on New Year's Eve. When a rogue wave causes the large vessel to overturn and trap its occupants at the bottom, a small group of survivors attempts to reach the surface as they face all manner of dangers in the sinking ship.

One of the best examples of the disaster genre done right, The Poseidon Adventure works because of its exciting set-pieces, gradually growing tension, and a terrific ensemble cast. A remake simple dubbed Poseidon was released in 2006 and does a pretty good job of capturing the exhilarating spirit of the original.

8 'Deep Rising' (1998)

An underrated horror gem from the end of the 20th century, Deep Rising is set aboard a cruise ship after it is attacked by a strange underwater monster. When Captain Finnegan ( Treat Williams ) and his crew are hired to transport an armed squad of thieves to the ship, all they find are the remains of the dead passengers and the still-hungry creature.

Deep Rising copies classic action-horror films such as Aliens to create an enjoyable monster movie on the high seas. The creature in question is memorable as it is visually distinct from your average horror fare, and the film's entertaining script is bolstered by a cast of familiar faces including Famke Janssen and Djimon Hounsou .

9 'Triangle' (2009)

A mind-bending thriller that has remained popular in genre circles since release, Triangle follows Jess ( Melissa George ) as she joins her friends for a day trip on a yacht. After experiencing boat troubles, they climb aboard a nearby ship that is seemingly abandoned, except for the masked figure that is stalking them across its halls.

Triangle dips its toes into a few different genres across its duration, including horror, psychological thriller, and even science-fiction. To say anymore would ruin the surprises that it contains, but needless to say it features a well-crafted story that will have the viewer questioning everything they have seen as the characters try to escape this ghost ship.

Watch on Shudder Watch on Peacock Watch on Tubi

10 'Jaws' (1975)

The movie that ruined the ocean for mankind, Jaws ' scares are still just as effective almost fifty years later. Set in the peaceful seaside town of Amity, the community is soon shattered by the arrival of a great white shark that puts the residents on the menu and shows no mercy to any who dare to enter the water.

The real movie begins when our three heroes: police chief Brody, grizzled fisherman Quint, and marine biologist Hooper set sail to destroy the shark once and for all. Once holding the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time , Jaws is iconic as the three strangers bond at sea, risking their lives to exterminate one of Earth's deadliest killing machines, with their only safety net being the small fishing boat that could sink at any moment.

BEST Cruise ship movies list

Like father (2018).

What Cruise Ship is Like Father set on: Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas

Like Father is one of the newest additions to the cruise ship movie genre. Starring two of Wandermust Family favourite actors in Kristin Bell and Kelsey Grammar. This movie is set almost entirely on the Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas.

This cruise ship movie actually starts out on land where Kristen Bell is left at the alter who then proceeds to head out on her honeymoon cruise with her estranged father – played by the great Kelsey Grammar of Frasier fame.

Of all the movies filmed on cruise ships I think this one is my favourite as the ship really shines in this movie.

  • Jack and Jill

Jack And Jill - cruise ship movies list

Cruise Ship in Jack and Jill Movie: The Jack and Jill cruise ship is the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas!

I actually watched Jack and Jill on a cruise ship going round the Caribbean and I think watching it on a ship actually improved the experience

This Adam Sandler film where Adam Sandler plays both the lead roles of Jack and Jill, virtually estranged twins that go on a cruise together has been universally panned. And for its efforts won a record total of 10 Razzie Awards. For those that don’t know the Razzies are basically the polar opposite of the Oscars. They are handed out on the afternoon of Oscars night as a reward (if you can call it that) for the worst films of the year.

Despite all of these accolades (?) it is still a fun film to watch especially for fans of cruise ships who don’t take things too seriously.

Alvin and the chipmunks – Chipwrecked – one of the best kids movies set on cruise ships

Alvin and the chipmunks - one of the best kids movies set on cruise ships

Cruise Ship in Alvin and the Chipmunks Chipwrecked Movie is set on: Carnival Dream

This is one of the more family friendly cruise ship movies. Alvin and chipmunks sequel called Chipwrecked is the second sequel to the 2007 Chipmunks movie.

Whereas the first is set on land this film is set on the Carnival Dream cruise ship. In the movie the Chipmunks and Chipettes are heading to some music awards via cruise ship. As always with the chipmunk films they don’t listen to Dave and stay in the cabin and escape round the ship to cause mayhem which leads them to being shipwreck or as the film would tell you chipwrecked on an island awaiting rescue.

Parent trap

movies about cruise ships - the parent trap

This film from 1998 is actually a remake of the Hayley Mills classic from the 60s. When parents Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson split up they each decide to take one twin to raise each – what a great idea.

Years later siblings reconnect at summer camp and switch places until the parents are reunited onboard a cruise ship.

The ship isn’t specified however we know it was a Cunard ship that the finale was shot on.

Hotel Transylvania 3

My daughter is a huge fan of the Hotel Transylvania franchise which stars Adam Sandler, Andy Sandberg and Selena Gomez about vampires who run a hotel for monsters.

The third instalment in the franchise sees them joined by Kathryn Hahn, of  The Secret Life of Walter Mitty  and WandaVision   fame as the captain of a cruise ship for Monsters.

The ship sets sail to some great mythical locations such as the Lost Island of Atlantis and is a lot of fun for the whole family.

An affair to remember 1957

An Affair to Remember - one of the best cruise ship films/ romance cruise ship movies

This has to be one of the best romantic cruise ship films around dating from the romantic cruising age!

Although this film is more commonly associated with New York and the Empire State building as that is where the meeting at the end of the movie takes place, many people forget that the lovers meteor a cruise ship crossing to New York.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 1953

This is another one of the classic films that features on this list. Gentleman prefers blondes stars the fabulous Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell as they cross the ocean on a luxury liner.

Monroe’s characters is newly engaged and is secretly being investigated by her soon to be father in law who suspects her of marrying for money.

There is a reason this film always features on the top 100 films of all time and as far as I am aware is the only film that makes it into these lists that features a cruise ship.

Royal Wedding 1951

A Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers classic set on board a ship. Expect big musical numbers, great dancing and fabulous costumes.

Shall We Dance? (1937)

The second film set on a cruise ship starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire that makes it into our list.

Death on the Nile – one of the best detective movies with cruise ships

Death on the Nile - one of the best detective movies with cruise ships

I am a huge Agatha Christie fan and my absolute favorite film based on her books is Death on the Nile.

It has a book that has warranted many adaptions including the recent 2020 version with Gal Godot and Kenneth Branagh. Personally I prefer the older versions but any of the films will delight any murder mystery fan.

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

This was Doris Day’s first ever movie and is set on a cruise that is headed to Rio.

Speed 2 cruise control – one of the best movies about cruise ships

movie 2022 cruise ship

When I was growing up Speed was one of my favorite films. Starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves this film set on a bus  quickly became a modern classic.

The sequel, Speed 2 Cruise Control did not receive such rave reviews but it still a fun watch. Sandra Bullock returned for this sequel set on a cruise ship but Keanu did not.

I would say that this film is not one to be watched if you are taking your first cruise and are a bit anxious but will be a lot of fun for seasoned cruises. In my opinion this is one of the best action packed movies that take place on a cruise ship.

Assault on a Queen

Assault on a Queen is a heist film set on a cruise ship starring the great Frank Sinatra. The film was made in the 60s so is one of the older films on the list but it is still well worth a watch.

The Poseidon Adventure 2006

This 2006 remake is another that isn’t for those that are anxious about cruising but is a great action packed film. A New Years Eve Party goes awry when a rogue wave hits a cruise ship on a transatlantic crossing.

Everyone knows what happened to this famous ocean liner but may not be the best film to watch if you are a new or anxious cruiser.

Table for Five

This 1983 comedy starring Jon Voight is another cruise film about an estranged father. This time Voight is estranged from three children and takes them on a cruise around the Med in an effort to reconnect.

Out To Sea 1997

This Walter Mathieu and Jack Lemmon vehicle sees the two posing as dance instructors on a cruise ship.

The film was filmed on an actual Holland America sailing, on a ship that was then called the Westerdam (another ship holds this name currently).

Carry on Cruising

I must admit to not being a fan of the Carry on films despite being British and brought up on these films. I personally find the humour very outdated. However if you like the Carry On series you will love Carry on cruising which has all the classic hallmarks of a carry on movie with the added bonus of being set onboard a cruise ship.

This 2002 Cuba Gooding Junior film was a critical and commercial flop and winner of several Razzies. Cuba Gooding Junior accidentally ends up on a gay cruise.

Unless you are desperate for a cruise ship movie I would personally give this one a pass.

Monkey Business (1931)

An early Marx brother film where stowaways have to avoid staff and being caught on a transatlantic voyage.

TV Shows Set on Cruise Ships

ABC/ Youtube

"I can't believe we're doing this!"

Athena ( Angela Bassett ) and Bobby ( Peter Krause ) were quite excited to head out on their delayed honeymoon cruise in the 9-1-1 season 6 finale in May — but now, in a season 7 preview clip exclusive to EW, the middle of the ocean appears to be the last place you'd want to be.

"I'm on a cruise ship, there was an explosion," a passenger tells a 9-1-1 operator in the first peek at the upcoming season of the first-responder drama, which makes the move from Fox to ABC when it returns March 14.

It's not yet clear if this is the same cruise ship that Athena and Bobby headed out on, but it doesn't bode well that the show made a point to tell viewers that the couple didn't inform anyone about their last-minute trip. (Classic 9-1-1 mistake!)

This cruise ship disaster has been a long time coming, with showrunner Kristen Reidel teasing a honeymoon hazard way back at the end of season 5 .

"I mean, dinners don't go well on  9-1-1 . Proposals don't go well on  9-1-1 . So I would expect that yes, at some point next season, you will definitely see some portion of that vacation and it will be very  9-1-1, " she told EW in May 2022.

And Reidel wasn't alone in predicting a cruise mishap.

"Bobby feels like, 'Hey, maybe it's finally time for us to go on a honeymoon.' And he chooses to surprise Athena with an idea for a vacation — and what could possibly go wrong if they get on a cruise ship?" Krause told EW a few weeks prior to the season 5 finale .

It may have taken them a season longer than we'd expected, but it seems the high seas are finally set for high drama.

New cruise ship Disney Treasure gets 1st taste of water

Disney Cruise Line’s new ship can float.

The Disney Treasure entered the next phase of construction as work continues at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, with the float out of the 144,000-gross-ton, 4,000-passenger vessel.

The sister ship to Disney Wish that debuted in 2022 will also be coming to Port Canaveral this December, set to take on seven-night Caribbean itineraries.

The ship’s first taste of water came last month, according to an update on the Disney Parks Blog .

“Water from the Ems River was pumped into the building dock where the ship is being constructed, lifting the hull from the floor of the chamber,” the post reads. “The shipyard team was then able to guide the Disney Treasure to a new location, where it will undergo the next phase of construction.”

The ship had its keel laid in March 2023 and is expected to be complete after 20 months of construction. The vessel still has a lot of interior and top-deck work to be completed before it makes its way along the Ems River for sea trials after which it will be handed over to DCL.

Haunted Mansion bar is coming to Disney’s new cruise ship

Among spaces coming to the ship are bars inspired by the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea theme park attractions and an Aladdin-themed Grand Hall atrium. Its top deck will once again feature the AquaMouse water coaster-dark ride combo. One new dining venue on board will be themed to the Pixar movie “Coco.”

Construction recently began on a third sister ship in what was originally referred to as the Trident class that will be named Disney Destiny.

“The Disney Treasure and the Disney Destiny will soon be next to each other in the shipyard, marking an unprecedented era of growth for Disney Cruise Line,” the post reads.

The three ships along with the purchase of the unfinished Global Dream cruise ship that DCL acquired in 2023 and was renamed Disney Adventure will grow the DCL fleet to eight vessels by the end of 2025.

Disney Adventure is headed for the Asia market, and Disney Destiny’s first home port has yet to be announced.

Disney’s first two ships, Disney Magic and Wonder, debuted in 1998 and 1999, followed by sister ships Disney Dream and Fantasy in 2011 and 2012.

The doubling of the fleet from four to eight vessels in three years coincides with the debut of a new private Bahamas destination set to open this summer called Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the tip of the island of Eleuthera.

The line has also expanded its year-round presence in Florida with not only its main home port out of Port Canaveral, but a new second Florida home base out of Port Everglades that opened last fall.

Who Will Pay for the Baltimore Bridge Collapse?

Disputes over liability and the cost of claims could take years for insurers to resolve and result in billions of dollars in payouts.

  • Share full article

A ship carrying nearly 5,000 containers, with a collapsed bridge on top of it.

By Jenny Gross ,  Michael Forsythe ,  Emily Flitter and Peter Eavis

Jenny Gross reported from London. Michael Forsythe, Emily Flitter and Peter Eavis reported from New York.

On the day the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed, President Biden said the federal government would pay the “ entire cost ” of rebuilding it, which some suggest could run to more than $1 billion. Washington will foot the bill so the bridge and nearby port can reopen “as soon as humanly possible,” he said.

The hope is that much of the cost will be recouped from insurers, but determining who is ultimately on the hook for the deadly disaster is set to become one of the messiest and most expensive disputes of its kind. Rebuilding the bridge, repairing the cargo ship that hit it and compensating companies for the disruption at one of the nation’s busiest ports may take years to resolve.

“We’re not going to wait,” said Mr. Biden, who plans to visit Baltimore on Friday to survey the damage.

The legal wrangling began this week when the shipowner, Grace Ocean Private Ltd., and the ship manager, Synergy Marine, both based in Singapore, filed a petition in U.S. District Court to limit their liability to $43.7 million. They cited an 1851 law that allows a shipowner to cap financial damages mostly to the value of a ship after a crash, if the owner is determined not to have been at fault.

Claims against the ship’s owner and manager must be filed to the federal court in Baltimore by Sept. 24, a judge said.

Experts in maritime law and insurance said determining liability was particularly complex because of the many parties involved, from shipowners in Asia to insurers in Europe to companies around the world that move goods in and out of Baltimore. Numerous lawsuits are expected, and the six deaths caused by the disaster add a grim layer of complications.

“You can’t just necessarily settle with one party and make it go away,” said Franziska Arnold-Dwyer, a senior lecturer in insurance law at Queen Mary University of London.

Investigators are still determining what caused such a catastrophic failure on the cargo ship, the Dali; why the massive vessel appeared to lose power and propulsion before hitting the bridge; and whether negligence was involved. The answers will have implications for who is liable for damage that may cost insurers and reinsurers up to $4 billion, according to industry experts.

“You’re looking at historic, record losses” for maritime insurers, said Sean Kevelighan, chief executive of the Insurance Information Institute, a trade group. The higher estimates could exceed the roughly $1.5 billion paid out after the Costa Concordia crisis in 2012, when 32 people were killed as the cruise ship ran aground off the Italian island of Giglio .

Losses are accumulating, with the Port of Baltimore, a top destination for car shipments , largely closed. Officials said this week that they had opened a channel around the wreckage for limited traffic. A full reopening of the port is expected in late May .

Very little is known about the owner of Grace Ocean, a Japanese businessman named Yoshimasa Abe, except that he is very wealthy.

Most of his known wealth comes from his fleet of more than 50 vessels, including container ships, bulk carriers, tankers and refrigerated cargo ships. They are owned by two Singapore-based companies, Grace Ocean Private and Argosy Pte., that Mr. Abe controls through an offshore company. VesselsValue , which compiles shipping data, estimates that those ships, including the damaged Dali, are worth a combined $2.9 billion.

Shipowners often borrow large amounts of money to buy their fleets. There is little public information about Mr. Abe’s debts, but in 2010 Grace Ocean borrowed $250 million from Mitsui & Company, a Japanese trading firm.

Mr. Abe is also the majority owner of two Chinese shipyards on islands off the coast of Ningbo, according to Sayari and WireScreen , companies that compile and analyze corporate data. Combined, the two shipyards can repair more than 200 vessels a year.

It is unusual for foreign companies to control Chinese shipyards, especially in recent years as industry consolidation in the country has favored state-owned companies, said Matthew Funaiole, who has written about Chinese shipyards for the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. “There’s really not much space for there to be foreign ownership,” he said.

Among the 68 member companies, schools and associations focused on ship repair that belong to the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry, a trade group, three are foreign-owned shipyards, of which Mr. Abe has a majority interest in two.

Mr. Abe did not respond to a request for an interview or answer written questions about his business. “Out of respect for the investigation and the legal process we will not be making additional public statements,” Jim Lawrence, a spokesman for the Dali’s management company and for Grace Ocean, said in an email. He confirmed earlier that Mr. Abe owned Grace Ocean Investment Limited, a company based in the British Virgin Islands that owns both Argosy Pte. and Grace Ocean Private.

If the shipowner is found liable, its insurer, a mutual association called Britannia P&I Club, will cover the first $10 million of claims, which could include coverage for loss of lives, debris removal, property damage and cargo damage. The Dali was carrying products including paper, U.S. soybeans destined for China and some hazardous materials, according to Concirrus, a marine insurance data provider, and DG Global, an agricultural exporter with goods on the ship.

Beyond $10 million, the 12 clubs including Britannia that make up the London-based International Group of P&I Clubs, which collectively insure about 90 percent of the world’s oceangoing tonnage, would share the cost of claims of up to $100 million. For claims above $100 million, dozens of reinsurers will cover costs up to roughly $3 billion.

The $3 billion figure is so widely known that it could become a target for businesses making damage claims. “There are some reinsurers expecting the worst,” said Hugo Chelton, a managing director at Howden Re, a reinsurance broker.

The global reinsurance industry ended last year with $670 billion in capital, according to Aon , an insurance broker. Though the bridge damage promises to be costly, it is not likely to be among the largest payouts reinsurers have faced recently. Hurricane Ian, which hit Florida in 2022, caused more than $50 billion in insured losses.

Sridhar Manyem, an analyst for AM Best, a ratings agency for insurers, said the potential losses from the bridge collapse did not seem large enough to do long-term damage to any insurers or reinsurers. “It should not affect their balance sheets,” he said.

While a significant share of the claims may be directed at the ship’s insurers, other businesses affected by the bridge and port closure could make claims on other policies to cover their losses, adding to the insured losses caused by the incident.

Scott Cowan, the president of International Longshoremen’s Association Local 333, the union representing Baltimore dockworkers, said on Tuesday that nearly 2,000 workers were still doing jobs at the port, like unloading cargo that arrived before the bridge collapsed.

Mr. Cowan said union leaders had asked for help from the federal and state governments. “The longer the channel’s closed and the longer we’re out, the bigger the problem is going to be,” he said. Many jobs at the port are considered daily hire jobs rather than full-time positions, so they will last only as long as work remains to be done.

Government funds for companies whose operations have been disrupted may not be fully recouped from insurers, said Oscar Seikaly, chief executive of NSI Insurance Group, an insurance broker.

In recent years, when Washington has stepped in with emergency aid after a commercial disaster, taxpayers have later largely recovered the costs, although the international scope of claims in the Baltimore bridge collapse will add complexity to the process.

Representative Dan Meuser, Republican of Pennsylvania, said he was outraged that Mr. Biden had immediately offered to use federal money to pay for the bridge’s reconstruction without considering other sources of funds, including from the owners and insurers of the Dali.

“Insurance payouts could potentially cover the entire cost of rebuilding the bridge without any taxpayer dollars being spent,” he said.

Robyn Patterson, a White House spokeswoman, said the responsible party or parties must be held accountable, but added, “We’re not waiting to get started on this critically important infrastructure project.”

Alain Delaquérière contributed research.

An earlier version of this article misstated a division of an insurance broker. It is Howden Re, not Howden.

Where’s my superhero suit? … an artist’s rendering of the Cotino clubhouse, inspired by Incredibles 2.

Let’s move to Disney town! Will life in its 2,000 themed homes be a dream or a nightmare?

Starting at $1m, a Disney home offers Disney art classes, Disney dinners, a Disney clubhouse and a Disney lake that never changes colour. We explore the House of Mouse’s plans for curated living

I t seems fitting that, in a Californian desert city named Rancho Mirage, there should be an improbable fantasy world rising from the parched, sandy ground. At the starry intersection of Frank Sinatra Drive and Bob Hope Drive – named after two Hollywood celebrities who used to frequent the area’s exclusive country clubs – a hoarding trumpets the arrival of Cotino , a “Storyliving by Disney community”. In this square mile of desert near Palm Springs there will soon stand a gleaming new world of 2,000 homes arranged around a sparkling turquoise lake, where every aspect of life will be curated by the entertainment corporation.

Cotino offers superfans a place to live out their wildest dreams; a chance to live in a Disney movie “where the story is all about you”. It will feature a clubhouse inspired by the futuristic mansion from Incredibles 2, where neighbours can bond over Disney-themed art lessons, enjoy dinners inspired by Disney stories and join family days with Disney-related activities.

The themed homes, which will start north of $1m (£792,000), promise to be “infused with the company’s special brand of magic”, while a forthcoming town centre, featuring a street market where local artists will sell Disney-themed arts and crafts, will be “abundant with opportunities for laughter”. The 24-acre lake – a bold proposition for an area that suffers from extreme drought – will be kept an unnatural shade of Avatar blue all year round, courtesy of patented Crystal Lagoons technology. Cotino seems to be as close as you can get to living in Disneyland itself, with every detail honed by Disney imagineers, every service provided by Disney “cast members” (ie staff).

Launched in 2022, with another 4,000-home development in North Carolina on the way, Storyliving by Disney represents the latest chapter in the expansion of the world’s largest entertainment company beyond the screen. It is a century-long tale which is being brought to life in an eye-opening new exhibition at the Arc en Rêve centre for architecture in Bordeaux, France, charting how Disney went from making flickering animations of a talking mouse to sprinkling its themed fairy dust over every aspect of our lives. The company’s $180bn portfolio now includes film production, cable and streaming channels, theme parks, cruise ship holidays, golf courses, theatre productions, safari expeditions, music publishing, an airline, and even its own island in the Bahamas where you can snorkel around a fake shipwreck .

‘Wizard of happiness’ … Walt Disney planning Disneyland in 1954.

With revenue from cinema and streaming falling in recent years, income from Disney’s “experience” division is soaring, and property development is the next logical step. Disney tried it before in Florida, first with utopian plans for Epcot (the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow), followed by the quaint town of Celebration , but Storyliving takes the branded living experience to the next level. It has been calibrated to capitalise on loyal fans’ emotional attachment to the House of Mouse when they make the most expensive purchase of their lives, while creating a captive audience to ply with branded services forevermore.

As Amy Young, creative director for Cotino, says in a promotional video: “You don’t see many new home communities that people have a real emotional connection to, and we thought, ‘We’ve got a real emotional connection to our guests.’” It’s evidently enough of an emotional bond to make residents cough up $20,000 to join Cotino’s neighbourhood club, and $10,000 a year thereafter for the rest of their happily themed lives.

The exhibition at Arc en Rêve, titled The Architecture of Staged Realities, paints a portrait of Walt Disney as a natural-born developer, a cartoonist who understood not only how to lure people into his magical worlds but how to keep them coming back. It is a story of human psychology as much as architecture and design, with Walt self-styled as the avuncular wizard of happiness. As the exhibition’s curator, Saskia van Stein, puts it: “His main medium was the American psyche.” And boy, did he know how to exploit it.

Disneyland occupies a central place in the story, as the first physical manifestation of Walt’s cartoon universe. Just as the modern Disney company is built on cross-promotion – with films nudging consumers towards themed rides and merchandise, and vice versa – so too did Walt realise the importance of television to the success of his planned theme park. In the 1950s, he struck a deal with ABC television network to invest in his acquisition of 244 acres of land around Anaheim, California . In return for its investment, Disney himself would front a weekly TV show for the network, in which he would tell stories about technological progress and alternative realities – and most importantly, update viewers on the process of building Disneyland.

‘The story is all about you’ … the site of the new community planned for California.

“It will be a place of hopes and dreams, facts and fancy all in one,” he declared in the opening episode as he pored over maps and models, introducing viewers to the nostalgic wild west realm of Frontierland; the futuristic utopia of Tomorrowland; and the rose-tinted Fantasyland, home to “anything your heart desires”. More than half of all TV owners in the US tuned in, exposing a rapt audience of more than 28 million people to Disney. It was a stroke of marketing genius: by the time visitors arrived in Disneyland, they were already familiar with it, having seen the plans evolve on their screens, providing the kind of intoxicating frisson of meeting a celebrity in the flesh.

The exhibition shows how brand partnerships were a key weapon in Disney’s promotional arsenal, beginning with the Monsanto House of the Future , one of the chief attractions of Tomorrowland in the 1950s and 60s. A cluster of cantilevered capsules made of reinforced plastic, this was a sci-fi hymn to the possibilities of plastic, featuring a dishwasher, a microwave, a two-way camera for video calls, plastic crockery and an electric toothbrush – all long before their widespread adoption in suburban homes.

Monsanto House of the Future, 1957.

Bringing movie stagecraft into the built environment, Van Stein reveals how visual tricks are deployed in Disney’s parks, such as the use of “Go Away Green”, a patented shade of drab olive deployed to make things disappear. It is used to colour everything from lamp-posts to fences and loudspeakers – as well as the concrete foundation of the now-demolished Monsanto House. Meanwhile “Blending Blue” is used to disguise unsightly taller structures.

Scale is also a chief part of the illusion, with buildings’ floors built incrementally shorter as they rise – at 5/8 scale above the ground floor, then 1/2 scale above that – making the worlds feel cute and “pony size”, as Walt put it. He also took cunning poetic licence with features such as the US flags found throughout the parks – each lacks a star or a stripe, allowing them to dodge the usual regulations that apply to the daily raising and lowering of the Stars and Stripes.

Another innovation – which went on to influence today’s smart cities – were the utilidors, a sprawling network of underground service corridors connecting the different themed lands in Florida’s Disney World. They were introduced after Walt was bothered by the sight of a cowboy walking through Tomorrowland on his way to his post in Frontierland in the California park, which Walt felt destroyed the illusion.

The tunnels housed automated vacuum waste disposal, hidden deliveries, costuming spaces for cast members, kitchens and emergency services, forming a ”below-stage” warren for the theatrics above. As the New York Times architecture critic cooed after a visit in the 1970s, Florida’s Disney World boasted “an array of technical innovations that would make any city manager drool,” making it “perhaps the most important city planning laboratory in the United States”.

As it is being staged in France , the exhibition has a section dedicated to Disneyland Paris and the surrounding suburban developments it spawned. After a long and hard-fought competition between various European countries in the 1980s to host this hallowed outpost of US culture, France was awarded the prize – and had to cough up more than four times the amount that Disney put in for the privilege. The project was described as a “cultural Chernobyl” in the French press at the time, with the park seen as destroying a vast swathe of prime agricultural land. The gift that Disney boss Michael Eisner presented to France’s future president Jacques Chirac, didn’t bode well either: an original painted animation celluloid of the Evil Queen offering Snow White a poisoned apple.

The exhibition documents the ongoing development of Val d’Europe, a Disney-themed new town near the park, created after a deal in 1987 gave the company unprecedented control of urban planning codes across almost 5,000 acres of surrounding land. The result is a surreal series of Florida-style gated communities gussied up in French fancy dress, with clusters of inflated Hausmannian wedding cakes cropping up in the fields of Marne-la-Vallée. Poignant photographs by Eléa Godefroy, taken while walking around the periphery of the Disney domain, document how these unreal enclaves sit within the surrounding countryside. Each year, they nibble away a little more land, as the Happiest Place on Earth expands across the globe.
