MSC World Europa preview: This giant new cruise ship will have 22 decks, 6 pools and a record-breaking slide

Gene Sloan

Have you heard the buzz about the giant new cruise ship under construction for MSC Cruises ? If not, you will soon.

Scheduled to debut in December, this massive new vessel named MSC World Europa is an astounding 22 decks high — four decks higher than Royal Caribbean 's Wonder of the Seas , the current size leader in the cruise world.

It's also 1,093 feet long, which is longer than any other MSC Cruises ship ever built.

Still, despite its great height and length, MSC World Europa won't quite top Wonder of the Seas as the world's biggest cruise ship. Wonder of the Seas and its four sister vessels — Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas — will remain the queens of the megaship world when measured by total interior space.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

After its debut, MSC World Europa will fall just behind them in the rankings of the world's largest cruise ships, at No. 6.

In all, MSC World Europa will measure about 205,000 tons — about 10% less than the five Royal Caribbean ships, known as the Oasis class . However, smaller is relative. At 205,000 tons, MSC World Europa still will be significantly bigger than any vessel currently operated by any line other than Royal Caribbean; this includes such cruising rivals as Carnival Cruise Line , Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises .

Like the Oasis-class ships, MSC World Europa will be able to hold nearly 7,000 passengers with all berths filled — 6,762 to be exact.

In other words, this is going to be one serious megaship.

Here's a preview of what to expect from MSC World Europa when it begins sailing later this year.

What's the layout of MSC World Europa?

msc cruise ship europa

MSC Cruises is taking a page from Royal Caribbean's playbook by breaking down the ship's public areas into distinct districts.

MSC World Europa will have an adults-only "Zen district" and a separate "family district" that will house 10 new kids facilities. There will also be a central interior promenade called World Galleria complete with entertainment, shops and bars.

The public areas of Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships are famously broken down into seven or eight separate districts, which Royal Caribbean calls neighborhoods.

msc cruise ship europa

Notably, the 341-foot promenade on MSC World Europa will be half-open to the sky and half-covered by an LED "sky screen"; the screen will light up with different displays throughout the day.

One of the signature features of the promenade will be The Venom Drop @ The Spiral, a record-breaking dry slide that plunges 11 decks and ends near the promenade area.

How many pools are there on MSC World Europa?

MSC World Europa will have six pools and 14 hot tubs, making it one of the most pool-covered ships at sea.

The watery offerings will include an Aquapark with multiple waterslides that MSC Cruises says will integrate virtual reality technology. There also will be a family sun deck.

How many restaurants does MSC World Europa have?

msc cruise ship europa

MSC World Europa will have 13 dining venues, including six specialty restaurants.

Two new-for-the-line venues will be Chef's Garden Kitchen (an outlet focused on microgreens), and La Pescaderia, a traditional seafood grill with alfresco seating.

Restaurants that already exist on other MSC Cruises ships will also be featured on MSC World Europa. These include the American-style steakhouse Butcher's Cut, the Asian-inspired Kaito Teppanyaki and Sushi Bar, and the Latin American street food-inspired Hola! Tacos and Cantina.

In a twist, the ship will have three separate buffet restaurants, each with its own ambiance.

MSC World Europa will also feature a craft beer bar serving brews made on board — a first for MSC Cruises. Dubbed the Masters of the Sea Pub, it'll span two decks.

Related: Don't miss perks through the MSC Voyagers Club loyalty program

Other drinking venues will include a cocktail bar called Elixir – Mixology Bar and a South Asian-style tea room filled with perfumes from the East. There will also be a widely stocked Gin Bar.

What are the entertainment options?

msc cruise ship europa

As one would expect from one of the world's largest ships, MSC World Europa will be chock-full of entertainment venues both big and small, including — get this — a venue that will host roller disco parties and serve as a bumper cars pavilion (the latter is something we've seen only on Royal Caribbean ships).

These entertainment venues will include:

  • A multistory venue called the Panorama Lounge at the back of the ship, which will be home to "immersive" entertainment.
  • A main, 1,153-seat theater, dubbed the World Theatre, that'll be the place for big production shows.
  • A family-friendly multifunctional entertainment venue called Luna Park Arena, which will host movies, game shows, kids activities and themed parties.

MSC Cruises in September announced the Luna Park Arena would host three concert-style shows — all new for the line. They'll include a "Symphonic Ibiza" show that combines a big-screen orchestra, modern Euro dance music, three specialty artists, dancers, a DJ, two vocalists and a club-style atmosphere. Also planned is a "K Pop party" where partygoers will learn dance routines and sing along with K-pop hits, accompanied by street dancers, acrobats and vocalists.

In addition, MSC Cruises announced the World Theatre would be home to five full-scale theater productions — all also new for the line. One of them, to be called "Yellow Submarine," will feature circus elements based on Beatles songs.

The line also said the Panorama Lounge would be home to four 90-minute music experiences that offer a mix of live bands, dancers, singers, aerialists and acrobats. The dancing on display during these performances will range from samba and tango to waltz, disco and lindy hop.

Does MSC World Europa have a kids area?

Developed in collaboration with Lego and Chicco (and featuring play areas that include lots of their products), the children's area on MSC World Europa will spread over seven rooms and 8,200 square feet. This is more space than the children's areas on any other MSC Cruises ship.

Each of the seven rooms will be dedicated to a distinct age group ranging from infants to 17 years old.

What kind of cabins can you book on MSC World Europa?

MSC World Europa will offer 19 different types of cabins, seven of which are new for the line.

Among them: cabins and suites with balconies that overlook the ship's interior promenade and giant duplex MSC Yacht Club suites with living and dining room areas.

In addition, the ship will have the line's first "infinite ocean view" cabins with walls of glass facing the sea that open from the top down to create a balcony-like effect. It's a concept that first debuted on an ocean ship in 2018, on Celebrity Cruises' 2,908-passenger Celebrity Edge .

Where will MSC World Europa cruise?

MSC World Europa will debut in December in the Persian Gulf with sailings that include a visit to Saudi Arabia — a destination rarely visited by cruise ships.

The vessel will initially sail a four-night Persian Gulf voyage from Doha, Qatar, to Dubai on Dec. 20. Then, it will begin a series of seven-night voyages from Dubai. The seven-night voyages will feature calls at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Dammam, Saudi Arabia; Doha; and Sir Bani Yas Island. The latter is a beach and wildlife-viewing destination in the UAE that will be exclusive to MSC World Europa passengers during their visit.

In late March 2023, MSC World Europa will reposition to the Mediterranean for a series of seven-night voyages to ports in Italy , France , Malta and Spain .

Eventually, MSC World Europa (or a yet-to-be-built sister ship) is likely to operate sailings in the Caribbean out of Florida . However, such itineraries have yet to be set.

MSC World Europa will be the first of four sister ships scheduled to debut between 2022 and 2027 that will make up a new class for MSC Cruises called the World class.

Review: MSC World Europa

msc cruise ship europa

Reviewed by Stefanie Waldek

What is the line?  MSC

Name of ship?  MSC World Europa

Passenger occupancy?  6,762

Itinerary?  Doha, Qatar

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

European cruise line MSC might not yet have the brand recognition of some of its U.S.-based competitors—at least to the North American audience—but its large ships bring all the at-sea fun you’d come to expect from the big names. Where MSC stands apart is its international following. Onboard, it’s not uncommon to hear passengers speaking numerous languages, as they hail from all over the world.

Tell us about the ship in general

MSC World Europa, which launched in December 2022, is the cruise line’s largest ship to date, carrying nearly 7,000 passengers at maximum capacity. And it has plenty of amenities for all, from 33 bars and restaurants to a Formula 1 simulator to the world’s tallest dry slide at sea. So, yes, this ship very much feels like a floating city—but it marks a new era in MSC’s quest to achieve zero emissions.  MSC World Europa is the first ship in the fleet to be powered by liquified natural gas (LNG), an alternative fuel that has fewer carbon emissions than other fossil fuels. (It does, however, have high methane emissions.) But what’s more,  MSC World Europa is a testing ground for a new type of electrochemical fuel cell that’s 25 to 30 percent more efficient than combustion engines. If the trial succeeds, this low-emission cell could be used to power the ship’s electrical and heating systems. The ship is also notable for its futuristic design inside and out, from the LED “sky screens” on the ceiling of the main indoor promenade to a Y-shaped stern that creates an open-air promenade and more space for exterior cabins.

Who is onboard?

MSC is a family-friendly cruise line that caters to international guests—Europeans, primarily, but there’s a growing North American clientele, too. You might find couples and groups of friends onboard, too, as there are plenty of adult activities, like an onboard brewery.

Describe the cabins

There are 19 cabin types on  MSC World Europa . I stayed in a Deluxe Balcony Aurea cabin, a mid-tier room type that was on the smaller side, with a bed, sofa, and a balcony. The decor was minimal and a bit bland compared to the high-design public areas, with upholstery in shades of brown. I did, however, find the shower in the bathroom to be rather spacious. If I were to travel on the ship again, I’d book a cabin in the Yacht Club, MSC’s upscale ship-within-a-ship concept. Yacht Club guests reside in an exclusive area on the ship that includes a private pool deck, a restaurant, and a bar.

Tell us about the crew

There are more than 1,400 crew members onboard  MSC World Europa,  and while it's impossible to meet them all, I found service to be stellar across the board. Because the ship is so large, don’t expect extremely personalized service (except in the yacht club). But do expect friendly and knowledgeable staff all throughout the ship.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Dining is a highlight onboard MSC World Europa, which has a varied array of venues to cater to all palates. There are several buffets, including a 24-hour American-style fast-food spot for night owls, as well as three main dining rooms. But it’s the six specialty dining venues that deserve the accolades: a steakhouse, a cantina, a seafood grill, a teppanyaki grill, a sushi bar, and a farm-to-table eatery. As I was on a preview “sailing” for the ship’s naming ceremony—we remained docked in Doha, Qatar, for the duration of the trip—we didn’t have time to experience each restaurant in its entirety, but we did do an around-the-world tasting of bites, and I was impressed by each venue. I did have a full dinner at Chef’s Garden Kitchen, where onboard hydroponic gardens provide the microgreens for the Nordic-inspired menu, which was devised by chef Niklas Ekstedt, whose restaurant in Stockholm earned a Michelin star. My favorite dish here was dessert: a flavorful almond cake dusted with dehydrated mint sorbet.

I also found  MSC World Europa’s beverage scene to be rather impressive, catering to all palates just like the restaurants. Brewmaster Teo Musso uses seawater in the beers brewed onboard the ship and served in the British pub; the mixology bar has a remarkable resort-like outdoor seating area; and the gourmet coffee bar and South Asian–style tea house caters to those seeking an elegant caffeine fix. And that’s not to mention the other offerings like the gin bar, the Champagne bar, and the juice bar.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

Yes, and it’s a must-visit. The thermal circuit onboard  MSC World Europa might just be the finest at sea, between its plunge pools, salt room, and snow room, among many other amenities. I also enjoyed my Balinese massage, and you can also book standard salon treatments, too.

Activities and entertainment

You won’t be bored on this ship. With standard amenities like pools, hot tubs (14 of them!), a casino, and an arcade, as well as more unique ones, like the aforementioned world’s tallest dry slide at sea and Formula 1 simulator, a water park, bumper cars, and a roller rink, there’s plenty to do onboard. There are also numerous shows in the various performance venues, including the  Luna Park Arena, the World Theatre, and the Panorama Lounge—in the latter, I watched a sultry Latin dance show.

How was the experience for families?

The Family Zone takes up a significant portion of deck 18, and it comprises sections for different age groups, ranging from babies to teens. This is also where you’ll find the Formula 1 simulator, as well as an entire room dedicated to LEGO.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

Though my experience on  MSC World Europa was limited to one port—Doha, Qatar—for a preview “sailing,” the ship is currently sailing itineraries in the Middle East, calling at ports like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Dammam, Saudi Arabia. I did take one excursion: a short half-day tour of Doha. It was a pretty typical cruise excursion that combined a bus ride with brief walking tours of tourist highlights.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

Fans of mega-ships won’t want to miss this over-the-top experience.

MSC World Europa Itineraries

Msc world europa review, review of msc world europa.

The 2022-built MSC World Europa cruise ship (initially announced as "MSC Europa") is the first in a 4-unit "MSC WORLD Class" series of passenger liners designed and built for MSC Cruises . The first vessel (World Europa) is to be followed by the sistership World America (2025). The two optional vessels ( ordered in 2022) will be launched in 2026 ( World Asia ) and 2027 (MSC World tbn).

The vessel (IMO number 9837420) is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 256070000) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is a passenger shipping company headquartered in Genoa and Naples . It was established in 1960. Today, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) - the world's 2nd largest containership company . MSC Crociere is the world's largest privately-owned cruise company.

By annual passenger shipping volumes, MSC is ranked the world's 3rd largest cruise shipowner - following only Carnival Corporation and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group .

As of 2021, MSC is ranked Europe's largest passenger shipping company. By the year 2026, MSC could become the world's 3rd largest cruise company (eventually surpassing NCLH by combined berth capacity) with a 29-vessel fleet that includes 15 newbuilds (2017-2027) and the unprecedented USD 13 billion budget for new shipbuilding projects.

MSC Cruises World-Class liners

On April 6, 2017, during MSC Meraviglia 's delivery ceremony at STX France Shipyard (Saint-Nazaire) , MSC signed a new shipbuilding MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with STX France for a new series of 2 vessels (World Class) at a total cost ~EUR 4,5 billion (~USD 4,8B). The ceremony was attended by Emmanuel Macron (France's President), Bruno Le Maire (France's Minister of Economy), Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC's Chairman) and Laurent Castaing (STX France's CEO). The first World-Class ship order was officially signed on May 31, 2017.

MSC World Europa cruise ship (MSC World Class liner)

The order for the two optional ships was announced in January 2020, making MSC the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard's largest customer - with a total of 21 units constructed there.

World Class MSC ships are with max passenger capacity 6782 (5079 lower berths). Building cost per ship is EUR 1,125 billion (USD 1,255B). The shipbuilder is Chantiers de l'Atlantique (fka STX France). The shipbuilding order includes 2 initial units, plus 2 optional. Each vessel has Gross Tonnage/volume 215,863 (GT tons), LOA length 333 m (1093 ft), waterline beam/width 41 m/135 ft (max width 54 m/177 ft), height 75 m (245 ft), draft 9,2 m (31 ft).

When was first announced by MSC (in April 2016), this ship design was planned with GT 205,000 tons, 2760 passenger staterooms, max passenger capacity 6850 (world's biggest by capacity). By GT tonnage/volume, MSC's World Class represents one of the world's largest passenger ships .

Reviewing the boat's design concepts (renderings and videos) was suggested a similar to the Oasis-Class interior structure with a Promenade (ship-long wraparound complex) with numerous dining and drink venues (on the ground floor - Aurea Restaurant, Raj Polo Tea House, Gin Bar, Zest-Juice Bar, Elixir-Mixology Bar, Fizz-Champagne Bar, Malt Lounge & Smoker's Bar, Emporium Coffee House), Promenade Cabins (interior-facing balcony rooms) and aft-located swimming pool (family pool deck).

The Lido Deck is dome-covered (by a retractable glass roof with solar panels) and with a large resort-style swimming pool, 6x Jacuzzis (4 cantilevered whirlpool hot tubs / porside and starboard), kids' Aquapark with 1x swimming pool and 3x waterslides (aft-located outdoor playground adjacent to the funnels/smokestacks) and aft-located adults-only Sundeck (with 2x swimming pools). Forward is the MSC Yacht Club (exclusive Sundeck with its own swimming pool, Spa pool, bar lounge).

World Europa's MSC Yacht Club is enhanced, with key highlights being:

  • The 2-deck sundeck is redesigned and provides 270-degree front views. The Lower Sundeck is fitted with dining and beverage venues (bar and grill). The Upper Sundeck has a large Jacuzzi/whirlpool and a swimming pool surrounded by a sunbathing area with padded loungers and private cabanas.
  • Two new Owner Suites (cat YC4) feature a double bedroom (walk-in closet), bathroom (with a full-size bathtub), a separate living-dining area (with floor-ceiling windows), two spacious sundecks (terraces with alfresco dining areas and Jacuzzies).
  • The 2-deck Duplex Suites have a lower level dedicated to the sundeck, lounge and dining areas, half bath. The upper level houses the master bedroom (with its own bathroom with bathtub). Duplex Suites have 2 sundecks, with the lower housing a jacuzzi/whirlpool bath and a lounge area, while the upper deck is for sunbathing (fitted with padded loungers).
  • MSC Yacht Club's passengers can visit exclusive treatment rooms for massages (part of MSC Aurea Spa) and also enjoy unlimited use of the thermal area.

The large ship has 40,000+ m2 (430,000+ ft2) of public spaces, 15,000 m2 (161,000 ft2) outdoor deck space, 3440 m2 (37000 ft2) main pool deck area, 7x swimming pools, 13x Jacuzzis (outdoor whirlpools/hot tubs), 760+ m2 (8200 ft2) of children's interior complex designed by Lego & Chicco (with 7x rooms dedicated to different age groups), multiple bars, lounges, retail shops, 13 dining venues (including 6x specialty restaurants), 21 bars and lounges, "Zen district" (adults-only complex with 2x swimming pools, solarium/sundeck, shaded outdoor bar lounge), "Family district" (with 10x kids facilities/pools, clubs, playgrounds), family sundeck (kids-friendly sunbathing area), Aquapark (fleet's largest, with playgrounds, splash pools, water cannons, waterslides with virtual reality experiences, High-Trail Ropes Course, Zip-Line. A teens-exclusive Sundeck has its own swimming pool and Jacuzzi. There are also several family-themed "villages" (open-air districts arranged similarly to RCI's neighborhoods) with their own venues and specific amenities.

The list of restaurants features 3x buffet-style (Luna Park Pizza, Il Mercato, La Brasserie) and 6x specialty, including Kaito Teppanyaki Restaurant & Sushi Bar (Asian), HOLA! Tacos & Cantina (Latin American and Mexican food), Marketplace/Il Mercato Buffet (20-hours-a-day-open Lido Restaurant), Eataly Restaurant (Eataly Food Chain designed food store), La Piazzetta (self-service buffet and pizzeria/Afternoon tea service, midnight buffet, seafood), Butcher's Cut (American steakhouse with an open kitchen), Jean-Philippe Maury Chocolaterie (patisserie and creperie by pastry chef Jean-Philippe Maury, also offers homemade gelato/gourmet ice creams).

MSC World Europa features a futuristic design with an arrow-shaped (90-degree/vertically positioned) G-bow and a Y-shaped stern that opens onto the World Europa Promenade. World Promenade spans 7 decks (total length 104 m / 341 ft) and continues indoors (to the World Galleria/sized 300 m2 / 3200 ft2) as it is partially covered by a kinetic dome ceiling with a LED screen on which are projected UHD images and videos throughout the day and night. World Galleria is lined with restaurants, bars, shops, and boutiques.

On the Promenade ends "The Spiral" (aka The Venom Drop) - a stainless-steel "dry slide". Spanning 11 decks (length 76 m / 250 ft), the slide is the quickest (and most fun) way to get from Deck 22 down to Promenade Deck (deck 8).

The liner's largest entertainment venue is The World Theatre (capacity 1153 seats) hosting original large-scale show productions in the evenings and daily activities like lectures, bingo, trivia games, dance classes. Other signature fun facilities and activities include bumper cars, roller disco, Cinema/Luna Park Arena (300-seat multifunctional complex housing game shows, movies, themed parties, kids' activities, game shows), botanic garden pool (with a retractable glass roof, lounge area, tropical bar).

The ship's interactive entertainment programming features newly designed shows presented at Luna Park Arena (3x concert-style), The World Theatre (5x grand-scale productions), and in Panorama Lounge (4x themed). Also new for the fleet are the surprise exhibits (popping up throughout the boat.

  • During the day, Luna Park Arena also hosts VR Drone Academy (virtual reality experience), Digital Dance Academy (3x "Dance with Flavia" classes by Flavia Cacace-Mistry/1980-born professional dancer), "Wake Up Rave" (by MSC's Doremi kids program), 2x new interactive gameshow, also fun challenges (for breaking Guinness world records). In the evenings, the Arena hosts a large-scale show, followed by 3x interactive musical concerts.
  • The World Theatre stages 5x new large-scale shows, custom-designed and featuring modern technologies (LED visuals, UHD media), unique scenery and props, talented actors, a total of 350 custom-made costumes. The shows are named "Eko" (sustainability-themed, all costumes are made from recycled materials), "Amelia Earhart" (sea-themed, with an E-Bike Stunt Wheel), "Cadmo The Landwalker" (exploration-themed), "Yellow Submarine" (circus show with elements based on The Beatles songs) and "A Night on Broadway" (classic theatrical production).
  • The aft-located (on decks 6-7) Panorama Lounge features an interactive floor and LED screens reflecting the night's theme. On the floor are projected drawings made by the guests onto interactive screens. Nightly, Panorama Lounge hosts 4x 90-minute music-themed experiences themed on different dance styles (waltz, tango, samba, disco) with performances by aerialists, acrobats, singers and dancers, live bands.
  • During the voyage, surprise pop-ups (throughout different parts of the ship) include 2x living exhibitions themed "Earth and Ocean". The surprise experiences are provided by professional actors, artists, and musicians.

The vessel (STX France, Chantiers de l’Atlantique yard/hull number W34) has volume 215863 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 18000 tons, max draught 9,2 m. The powerplant is based on 5x Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 14V46DF) with combined output 80 MW (107280 hp). The propulsion is based on 2x aft 5-blade propellers and 7x azimuth thrusters (4x bow + 2x stern) with combined output 44 mw (59000 hp). The registered shipowner is COMPANIA NAVIERA WORLD 1 SA, while the registered manager is MSC CROCIERE SPA.

The vessel's construction officially started with the steel-cutting ceremony held on October 31, 2019, at Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard/STX France in St Nazaire . During the ceremony was also officially announced the newbuild's name ("MSC Europa") by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Cruises' Executive Chairman).

MSC World Class cruise ship

The vessel's keel-laying / coin ceremony was held on June 29, 2020. During the special event, the ship was presented under the name "MSC World Europa". The ceremony was attended by two "godmothers - Zoe Africa Vago (daughter of Pierfrancesco Vago / shipowner) and Aurore Bezard (shipbuilder employee / in the shipyard's HR / human-resources department). The godmothers placed two specially minted coins under the keel (hull's first block) for good fortune - shipbuilding's historic maritime tradition. At the keel-laying ceremony were also present Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC's Executive Chairman) and Laurent Castaing (Chantiers de l'Atlantique Shipyard's General Manager).

MSC World Europa cruise ship (MSC World Class liner)

The vessel was launched/floated out from drydock on December 2, 2021. On the same day at the French shipyard was held the keel-laying ceremony for the fleetmate MSC Euribia . Both ceremonies were attended by Pierfrancesco Vago and Laurent Castaing. MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia were, respectively, the 15th and 16th boats constructed by Chantiers de l'Atlantique for MSC.

World Europa's sea trials (in Biscay Bay, Atlantic Ocean) were successfully completed on June 18-19, 2022. The vessel was officially delivered to MSC Group by Chantiers de l’Atlantique

The ship's christening was on November 13, 2022, held at Port Doha's new "Grand Cruise Terminal". The naming ceremony was in partnership with Qatar Airways and led by godmother Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani (1984-born Qatari royal, as well as Qatar Foundation's CEO and Vice Chairperson). The event made World Europa MSC's first cruise ship not to be named by Sophia Loren. The ceremony was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, Captain Marco Massa (ship's Master), Diego Aponte MSC Cargo's President), Akbar Al Baker (Qatar Tourism's Chairman and Qatar Airways Group's CEO), Hassan Al Thawadi (Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy's secretary general). The ship naming ceremony featured a drone show, a fireworks show, gala dinner, live musical performances (by Qatar Youth Choir and Matteo Bocelli).

The ship's laundry and catering equipment was delivered and installed by ALMACO (contracted by STX France in January 2021). The catering area (~5000 m2 / 53820 ft2) was fitted with 12x galleys/kitchens and 58x pantries (storage rooms for food, crockery, cutlery). ALMACO also provided the ship with 46 provision stores (total area ~2150 m2 / 23140 ft2). The ALMACO-installed laundry equipment is by Girbau Group (1960-founded, Barcelona-based manufacturer) and the laundry system is integrated with the onboard water recycling plant purifying the wastewater.

Ship technology

In mid-January 2020, MSC and the French shipbuilder unveiled the revolutionary R&D (research and development) project PACBOAT that focuses on integrating the new fuel cell technology (SOFC) on LNG-powered cruise ships . PACBOAT allows the generation of power/electricity using as fuel LNG.

  • PACBOAT project's partners are France's CEA (Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission / government-funded research organization) and ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency / under the joint authority of country's Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Higher Education and Research), also ENTREPOSE Group (product design and manufacturing), BUREAU VERITAS SA (marine safety certification agency), CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE (as shipbuilder, integrator, project coordinator / subsidiary of STX Europe AS) and MSC CRUISES (as shipowner, subsidiary of MSC -Mediterranean Shipping Company SA).
  • SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) operates at very high temperatures (~750 Celsius / 1382 Fahrenheit). The new technology is ~60% more efficient than the Hydrogen-based PEMFC (Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell). PEMFC (aka polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells) is a low-temperature technology developed mainly for transport, stationary and portable applications. The LNG-fueled SOFC technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions by ~30% in comparison to the standard Wartsila dual-fuel marine engines (LNG-diesel).
  • In 2022, MSC's SOFC project joined GE (General Electric Company), LR (Lloyd's Register Group Ltd), Ceres (nonprofit organization). GE developed a collaborative design for multi-megawatt (max 10 MW) shipboard SOFC system - powerful enough to provide electricity for large ships, and able to replace the conventional diesel generators.

Among "MSC World Class" key features are the new generation LNG-powerplant , new wastewater treatment plants, ultra-modern marine architecture with a Y-shaped superstructure (better panoramic views, significantly increased number of balcony staterooms), G-bow hull (vertically positioned / at 90-degree angle) improving the vessel's stability and hydrodynamics / fuel efficiency).

In January 2020, the Finnish company Wartsila was contracted to supply the engines, fuel systems, and propulsion systems (thrusters, propellers) for both "MSC World" ships (2022 and 2024). Each boat has 5x Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines (14-cylinder, running on MDO/marine diesel oil, each is fitted with NOx reduction units), 2x Wartsila LNGPac (gas supply system/fuel storage), 7x Wartsila thrusters (steerable/4x bow, 2x stern), 2x Wartsila FPPs (fixed pitch propellers/5-blade). The machinery was scheduled for delivery in mid-2020 (World Europa) and mid-2022 (World America).

This MSC ship class is also the industry's first to introduce LNG-powered SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) to produce all the electricity and heat needed for onboard services without combustion. The technology further reduces (by ~1/3) greenhouse gas emissions in comparison to conventional LNG-powered cruise ships.

  • SOFC is an electrochemical conversion device using solid oxide electrolytes to produce electric power directly from oxidizing a fuel (in this case LNG/liquified natural gas).
  • SOFCs are best known for having relatively fuel flexibility, low cost, low greenhouse gas emissions, high heat and power efficiency, long-term stability.
  • SOFCs operate at very high temperatures (500-1000 C) and thus don't require platinum catalyst material and are not vulnerable to CO catalyst poisoning. IT-SOFCs operate at "intermediate temperatures" (600-800 C). LT-SOFCs operate at "low temperatures" (350-650 C). SOFC-GT is a system that combines a SOFC and a gas turbine.
  • SOFCs are often used in stationary generators (with max power outputs 2 MW). The higher operating temperatures allow SOFCs to be used in the marine industry (engine heat recovery systems), which further increases the ships' overall fuel efficiency.

MSC World Europa's two LNG-based SOFCs (fuel cells by Bloom Energy) are with capacity 75 kW per unit (total output 150 kW). While the liner is in port, Bloom Energy Server shows ~60% efficiency and ~30% reduction of CO emissions without methane slippage.

MSC WORLD-class units are fitted with the latest and most environmentally efficient BWTS (ballast water treatment system) model BIO-SEA B02 0300 (by BIO-UV Group). The technology combines mechanical water filtration with UV disinfection. It is chemical-free and meets the IMO's requirement of 300 m3 per hour water flow rate.

On February 1, 2019, MSC officially revealed the in-cabin digital assistant ZOE. The technology ("cruise industry first") was developed by Harman International (USA-based company, fully-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics) which has developed digital audio solutions for major corporations like Google, Microsoft, Amazon.

  • ZOE is an artificial intelligence device (voice-enabled, with advanced voice recognition software) available in all passenger staterooms.
  • ZOE speaks 7 languages, answer cruise-related questions, provides info on shipboard services-activities-facilities, makes reservations and bookings.
  • The digital device features far-field microphones, top-quality speaker, quad-core processor (for fast response times), direct phone connection (through Bluetooth). The system can also upgrade its own database to answer previously unanswerable questions.
  • Passenger data (including itinerary/tour and shipboard preferences) is stored in the Cloud Storage system and used on the next scheduled voyage.

The device (sized ~15 cm) can be activated whenever passengers choose. A waiver must be signed to agree for their personal data to be stored.

Starting with MSC Bellissima (2019), ZOE is planned for a fleetwide introduction (over the period 2019-2024) and available on all MSC newbuilds.

Fodor’s Expert Review

Ship overview.

MSC Cruises

Mes...a, Naples

Bar...Marseilles

One of the largest cruise ships at sea, the 6,762-passenger MSC World Europa signaled a brand new class of ships for the line (the World Ships class) when it debuted in 2022, making its first order of business to host 6,700 World Cup fans in Doha as a floating hotel during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.   Read More

Built in Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, the 22-deck behemoth has the perhaps surprising distinction of being MSC Cruises’ first vessel powered by liquified natural gas, hugely reducing emissions and making it the most environmentally advanced ship in MSC’s fleet.

As a passenger onboard MSC World Europa, it’s easy to forget you’re even on a ship (or at sea) at all. It truly feels like a city unto itself, with various “districts” to explore and too much by way of entertainment, eating and drinking to cover over the course of a standard week (especially if you plan to spend any time in port at all).

The 13 onboard dining venues and 20 bars and lounges include an onboard microbrewery, a specialty concept restaurant with its own garden, dedicated gin and Champagne bars, a teahouse, taco and margarita joint, American-style steakhouse and so much more.

For entertainment, the longest dry slide at sea, which spirals down 11 decks, is the aerial jewel of an incredible 350-foot-long promenade that feels like a waterfront urban park, lined by restaurants with covered outdoor seating. Add that six swimming pools and hot tubs spread across several decks and you’ve still only scratched the surface of what you can get up to on board.

MSC World Europa sails the same itinerary all year round in the Mediterranean Sea, with 7-night cruises visiting such lively coastal cities as Marseille, Barcelona, Valletta in Malta and Sicily’s Messina (with only one at-sea day all week). Particularly novel for cruisers who love flexibility–you can embark and disembark for your sailing aboard this ship in any of its six ports, as well as sail for as few or many days as you like.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

What to expect on board, staterooms & cabins.

The ship’s 2,631 staterooms and suites, spread across 12 decks and spanning a whopping 19 different cabin types, mean you have serious options for how limited or luxe you’re looking to sail. Cabins in MSC Yacht Club, the line’s ship-within-a-ship, are the most luxurious and spacious, offering access to the Yacht Club’s private restaurants, lounges and a swimming area and other outdoor space that never feel overcrowded. Most of the MSC Yacht Club cabins have balconies, some have whirlpools, and there are a few interior MSC Yacht Club cabins, too, if you just want to get a foot in the door to this truly beautiful and leveled-up space at the ship’s bow.

Other onboard cabin options include studios with single beds for solo cruisers, cabins with ocean, promenade and partial ocean views and new cabin designs called “cluster cabins” perfect for families and groups who want to stay close by each other on the massive ship. Cabins span the size spectrum, from 108 square foot studio interior cabins to the whopping MSC Yacht Club Owner’s Suite, with 1119 square feet to spread out in, panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor living area on a large balcony with a private whirlpool overlooking the passing sea.

Appreciated touches in all cabins include USB charging ports under the lighting switches neat the beds, mini fridges and flat screen TVs, and showers with glass doors instead of curtains.

MCS World Europa has 65 ADA cabins accessible to wheelchair users located between decks 9 and 16. These include interior cabins, junior suites, deluxe balcony cabins and others–all located in close proximity to elevator access for ease of movement around the ship. Shower benches that fold down, wider bathroom doors, amplified phones and close caption TV are all available in all ADA cabins, too.. The ship’s gangways all accommodate wheelchair and scooter access and there are no tenders to port to contend with in the European ports of call where MSC World Europa docks.

At the time of booking, guests with special requirements can fill out a Special Needs Form to advise MSC Cruises of their needs.

Food & Drink

Passengers who book MSC’s base package are assigned a table and dining room for dinner for the length of their cruise, with varying themed menus served throughout the week. The ship’s expansive if typical buffet options–with salad stations, carved meats, seafood, charcuterie, and more–are the most popular options for breakfast and dinner and can feel a bit trough-like, considering how crowded they get. Luna Park Pizza & Burger is a brand new 24-hour dining option on the ship with classic American carnival and fast food fare ranging from hot dogs, burgers and chicken fingers to pretzels and funnel cakes.

You’ll pay extra to dine at MSC World Europa’s six specialty restaurants, each of which has its own unique flair and include Chef’s Garden Kitchen, helmed by a Michelin chef and with its own onsite garden, as well as a seafood-centric restaurant on the World Promenade called La Pescaderia Fish Market where you can point to the fish you want in the case and enjoy a spread of Mediterranean mezze while waiting for it to be grilled to order. There’s also a fun teppanyaki spot, Kaito, that families love for the nonstop entertainment alongside the food service, and the very American-style steakhouse, Butcher’s Cut, with lots of dark woods and leather rounding out a clubhouse feel and hearty steaks and sides like you’d find in Texas.

Passengers staying in MSC Yacht Club have access to their own private restaurant, where multi-course dinners are served in an elegant dining room and breakfast and  lunch can be taken indoors or outdoors in sit-down settings. If MSC Yacht Club passengers choose to experience some of the specialty dining restaurants during their sailings, they get priority reservations.

If Disney’s Epcot is famous for drinking around the world, then MSC World Europa, with a whopping 20 bars and lounges, could bring similar bragging rights to the bar top. Whether you’re raising a pint in the British-inflected Masters of the Sea pub, sipping something flowery, fruity and gin-based at the dedicated Gin Project bar (with more than 70 craft gins on offer), making a break for bubbly and caviar in the dedicated Champagne Bar or puffing a Cuban cigar alongside a cognac at Malt Lounge, the ship’s bar scene does not disappoint. Drinks are not included in packages, however, so you’ll want to have an idea for how much you want to, er, party to pick the best beverage deal for your needs. To feel like you’re in a big city lounge with delicious craft cocktails–including many of the smoking kind–don’t miss Elixir–Mixology bar, a new offering just on MSC World Europa, with its edgy handcrafted concoctions and an outdoor terrace for sipping with sea views.

Entertainment

You will hardly want for ways to be entertained on board MSC World Europa, whether you’re looking for a rollicking night of karaoke with multiple crooning nationalities guaranteed to be represented, a quiet evening clinking Champagne glasses in the Champagne Bar, or to take in a theater-production, concert or all-out spectacle of pyrotechnics, stunts, dancing, and acrobatics. The Masters of the Sea pub has music every night and serious British pub vibes, so much so that you might feel transported to London or Dublin, depending on the crowd and who’s crooning.

One of the best spots to hangout on the ship later in the day is the Ocean Promenade deck overlooking the stern. It’s a particularly atmospheric spot to gather for sunset and takes on an urban park feel, with people doing the very-Euro evening flaneur thing with ice creams in hand and sitting or benches to watch the wake. There are drink carts and families dancing to the ambient tunes. Were it not for the passing waves, you might wonder if you were even on a ship at all, so park-like is the vibe.

Spa & Fitness

MSC World Europa makes it easy to work out, with an excellent fitness facility on deck 20 where floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the main pool deck and passing sea–all the better inspiration for finding some motivation to workout. There are free weights, treadmills, step machines and myriad TechnoGym machines as well as onboard fitness classes to help ensure you can stay fit at sea. Exercise classes like stretching, morning yoga, aerobics and Samba Dance Classes on deck 18 at La Plage and at the World Promenade are offered for no additional charge.

The ship’s Aurea Spa, decked in natural stones and woods, is exceptional, both for its range of treatments–you’ll never go wrong here with a Balinese massage from hands that have perfected it–to its thermal area that includes twin ocean-view saunas, a steam room, thalasso-style pools and a snow room for doing your own wellness circuit pre or post treatment.

Key cruising tips

Health & safety.

Passengers are not required to undergo a Covid test or show proof of vaccination status to travel aboard MSC Cruises. All public areas of the ship have Braille signage and all MSC Cruise ships have an onboard medical center staffed by the ship’s doctor and other medical personnel. Emergency services can be accessed 24/7 onboard by dialing the medical emergency number. Most medical services onboard will be charged to your account, with pricing available onboard. Insurance claims can be filed once ashore but you’ll be expected to pay up front for any non-emergency visits and treatments.

To learn more about MSC Cruises health and medical protocols, please visit the website , where the most up to date information and potentially changing requirements can be found.

MSC World Europa’s dress code is casual. While there are themed nights, including elegant and gala nights, there is no mandate to dress up for them. That said, it’s not suggested to shop up in shorts in the evening to the onboard dining rooms.

Junior Cruisers

MSC World Europa’s included MSC Kids Club sprawls across over 8,000 square feet and is one of the largest and most comprehensive kids clubs at sea. There is so much to do here–from the virtual reality Drone Academy and Digital Dance Academy for pre-teens and teens (part of the immersive and tech-filled TEENS LAB) to a Baby Club, Lego room and outdoor sports program in a space with rollerskating, pickleball, Zorb ball, basketball, soccer and more. The MSC Dance Crew rallies everyone for dance-offs in a special theater for the kids, and there’s so much more on tap from day into night, too. Note that age requirements (7 and up) as well as height requirements apply to ride the ship’s slides, dry and wet, which might mean your kid is tall enough but not old enough to ride (queue the waterworks). That said, your kids might never want to leave the Kids Club. And with opening hours more or less from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. all day, they’ll hardly have to. The staff speak several different languages, to cater to the many passenger nationalities on board, so don’t be surprised if movies are shown in German one day and Italian the next (majority rules is the rule).

Service onboard is friendly and efficient throughout–with a step up for passengers cruising in MSC Yacht Club, where cabins have their own butlers and there’s a dedicated concierge to help you get priority reservations at specialty restaurants as well as in the ship’s theaters.

Automatic gratuity charges are added to your bill, roughly $13 to $16 dollars per person, per day. Tips are not charged for kids younger than 2 on your booking.

MSC World Europa Activities

MSC's open aft promenade includes a multi-story dry slide (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Theater and Shows on MSC World Europa

Entertainment takes on many different forms aboard MSC World Europa. The ship has a traditional main theater -- the World Theater -- as one would expect, but several smaller lounges and outdoor spaces do double-duty as entertainment venues, as well.

The World Theater on Decks 6 and 7 hosts MSC's vibrant production shows. In keeping with the multilingual nature of the line's passengers, these shows are mostly musical in nature, with a strong emphasis on costuming and extravagant lighting design and features. What's more, most clock in at under 40 minutes in duration -- perfect for those who want to try a little bit of everything onboard.

The two-level MSC Luna Park Arena located on Decks 5 and 6 (entrance on six) is a combination entertainment and night club venue. Expect things like Interactive Disco Concerts, DJ sessions, Glow parties and dancing. This is late-night-party-central aboard MSC World Europa, with music until the wee hours.

The Panorama Lounge is found all the way aft on Decks 6 and 7, and offers sweeping daytime views over the ship's stern thanks to a two-story bank of wall-to-ceiling windows. A secondary show lounge, Panorama offers up immersive song-and-dance performances like Bandstand Boogie, Rock Evolution, and more. By day, the Panorama Lounge functions as a gathering point for classes, seminars and even Kids Club activities.

Daily Things to Do on MSC World Europa

There's no shortage of diversions aboard MSC World Europa. The ship offers a slate of activities that run from the Sunrise Stretch at 7:00 a.m. to the evening DJ that only begins at Midnight.

Excluding the sales-driven activities that every cruise ship has on offer (and MSC World Europa is no exception in this regard), there are still plenty of things to take in, particularly on sea days, when the schedule onboard is jam-packed with activities. Expect diversions like trivia, ping-pong tournaments, dance classes, and pool deck parties.

MSC World Europa also offers plenty of other entertainment, too: the ship has its own sports complex known as the MSC Sportplex on Deck 20 aft that houses a rink used for bumper cars, roller skates, and other fun, active diversions.

Nightlife on MSC World Europa

MSC World Europa truly comes alive at night. To kick things off, MSC puts on a cool "Palm Tree Light Show" on the MSC World Promenade on Deck 8 aft. This happens most nights at 6 p.m. and is definitely something worth checking out.

After the Palm Tree show, things really kick off. Live music prevails throughout the ship, from a folk duo in the Masters of the Sea pub to live bands that play in the Dolce Vita Bar on Deck 6, Elixr Mixology on Deck 8, and the World Promenade. Don't be surprised to find roving musicians, too -- particularly during the dinner hour.

In addition to stage and music shows in multiple different venues (see "Entertainment", above), evenings hold the promise of trivia, deck parties, dance classes, and of course, nightcaps in the ship's numerous bars and lounges. The Kids' Clubs are open late, and a number of bars and lounges stay open until at least 2 a.m.

The best thing to do on a ship the size of MSC World Europa is to simply wander from fore to aft, seeing what appeals and wandering around where the action goes -- both indoors and out -- as the ship has its own unique vibe each evening, from the quiet calm of the Champagne Bar to the raucous entertainment in The Gin Project and Masters of the Sea.

MSC World Europa Bars and Lounges

Bars and lounges aboard MSC World Europa are a particular strong point, with each having its own distinct theme and décor. Many -- but not all -- bars even have unique menus with a selection of beverages that cannot be found anywhere else, though all bars have a selection of common spirits, wines and beers for thirsty passengers to choose from.

One of the most unique bears mentioning here, though it will be up to passengers to figure out how to gain entry: MSC World Europa has a sublime Speakeasy Bar hidden somewhere on the ship. Replete with décor that mimics a 1940's cargo hold on an old ocean liner-turned-nightclub, the Speakeasy is not located in any passenger accessible area. Indeed, there's an entire process you have to go through in order to gain entry, which is by invitation only. The rewards for figuring it out, though, are numerous: the cocktails here are superbly crafted and presented with considerable flair. You'll pay for the experience, however -- the drinks at the Speakeasy are not covered on any drink package.

Even without the Speakeasy, chances are good there's a watering hole onboard that will speak to you.

For Calm, Soothing Atmosphere: The Raj Polo Tea House is a one of a kind. By day, it serves up a stunning blend of teas and light bites, and by night, the tea gives way to tea-infused cocktails accompanied by soft piano music and dim mood lighting. We found it becoming our go-to bar when things got too crowded elsewhere, or when we wanted a nonalcoholic drink with panache.

For the Gin Lover: It's hard to beat The Gin Project, a gin-themed bar and lounge situated right atop the English-style Masters of the Sea pub. Craft gin-based cocktails are the mainstay here, and should you tire of that, a selection of pub-approved pints are available downstairs via thte connecting wrought-iron staircase.

For the Cigar and Cognac Set: Credit to MSC for developing the unique Malt Lounge on Deck 8 -- a half-indoor, half-outdoor bar where cigars and brown liquors like scotch, cognac and whiskey are de rigueur. Settle into one of the high-armed leather chairs and light up a stogie, if you're so inclined -- or maybe just order a fine cognac and take in the warm ocean breeze.

For Bubbles: Fizz Champagne Bar has all the prosecco, cava and champagne you can handle -- and then some -- all wrapped up in an elegant setting on Deck 8 that also features an outdoor terrace.

Pools, Hot Tubs and Waterslides on MSC World Europa

There are seven pools and 13 hot tubs aboard MSC World Europa. One of these -- the Botanic Garden Pool on Deck 18 -- is an indoor pool adorned with a retractable magrodome roof that can be opened when weather conditions allow.

One pool and one hot tub are set aside for the exclusive use of guests staying in MSC's Yacht Club staterooms and suites.

The Aurora Borealis Aquapark on Deck 20 is dedicated for the little ones and is situated adjacent to the Doremiland Kids Club. This features misters, slides, and even VR technology for one of the most immersive (and creative) family-friendly waterparks we've seen at sea.

Conversely, adults can escape from the kids at the Zen Pool on Deck 18 -- the use of which is reserved exclusively for adults aged 18 and up.

In addition to the waterslides at the Aurora Borealis Aquapark, the ship has a massive dry slide known as Venom Drop @ The Spiral . The entrance is on Deck 20 aft, and the slide whisks riders all the way down to Deck 8 and the outdoor World Promenade.

Sun Decks aboard MSC World Europa

Open deck space aboard MSC World Europa is sufficient, though things can get crowded around the La Plage Pool on Deck 18, which tends to be the primary gathering spot on sunny days at sea.

MSC World Europa does, however, have some hidden deck spaces that passengers rarely find -- and which are rarely crowded. The aft area of Deck 20 and Deck 19 tends to be great for those looking to sunbathe or kick back with a good book, while the aft end of Deck 8 offers some great wake views.

Passengers booked in MSC Yacht Club staterooms and suites can make use of the exclusive sun deck on Deck 21 forward.

Services and Wi-Fi on MSC World Europa

MSC World Europa offers its Guest Services and Shore Excursion desks adjacent to each other on Deck 6. This area can get crowded quickly, especially right after embarkation and on the last evening before disembarkation. Fortunately, service is prompt and the line seems to move rather quickly for both.

Unlike North American-based cruise ships, passengers will need to use one of the interactive kiosks onboard to register a valid credit card in order to set up their onboard accounts. This system can be confusing at first, but once the card is set up, no more action is needed. (We never could register our credit card successfully at the kiosk, and had to go to Guest Relations to activate it).

The MSC Signature Casino is of moderate size given the ship's predominantly European clientele, but is nowhere near the massive casinos found on ships catering to the American market.

Shops are scattered throughout Decks 6, 7 and 8, and offer the usual assortment of high-end watches, jewelry and booze found on most large-scale cruise ships. Of note, however, is the MSC Shop , which sells logo-brand items and other collectible swag, all of which is better than average. Sundries and basic toiletries are also available for purchase.

Wi-Fi internet access is available from stem to stern and was snappy and responsive on our sailing. MSC sells a variety of packages that can be purchased onboard or added to your booking pre-cruise. Pricing for these varies by cabin and experience category booked, and by sailing length.

MSC Aurea Spa onboard MSC World Europa

MSC has always had strong spa offerings across its fleet, and the MSC Aurea Spa aboard MSC World Europa was no exception. From the reception area (located near the fabulous Zest Juice Bar) to the treatment rooms, the entire facility feels upscale and modern.

Prices for treatments are in-line with what you'd expect on any major ship, starting around $200 and running into the $400-range, depending on treatment and duration. We had one of the best Swedish massages we've ever had at sea or on land onboard -- so much so that we booked a second spa treatment for the next day. There was no hard-sell for products to purchase afterwards, either -- a welcomed rarity.

MSC World Europa also has a soothing Thermal Suite that can be enjoyed post-treatment, or with a separate pass. The facility offers a hydrotherapy pool, heated ceramic loungers and an assortment of steam rooms, pleasingly scented, to enjoy.

A full-service Salon provides all the necessary hair and nail treatments to look spiffy for formal night, while a Gentlemen's Barber can be found in a separate location on Deck 7, next to the Masters of the Sea Pub. We never saw anyone in there on our sailing, and it wasn't immediately clear if men's services there need to be booked through the Aurea Spa, or individually with the barber.

Fitness and Gym on MSC World Europa

The fitness center and gym on MSC World Europa is situated on Deck 20. At 748 square meters -- or roughly 8,000 square feet -- it is large enough to offer all of the requisite equipment, most of which is manufactured by Italian fitness company Technogym. Scheduled fitness classes and personal training are available for an additional fee.

Is MSC World Europa Family Friendly?

MSC caters directly to families with kids of all ages, and multi-generational families travelling together. Because of that, families will never feel out of place aboard MSC World Europa, which welcomes cruisers of all ages with open arms.

That also applies to the upscale MSC Yacht Club. During our Middle East sailing , we were surprised (pleasantly, we might add) to see families travelling with children in the MSC Yacht Club were treated like gold, even in this high-end enclave. Even better: other passengers didn't seem to mind their presence either.

Cruising with kids of any age in the MSC Yacht Club makes sense: the rooms are larger and offer more personal space, and the addition of butler service is a real win for families looking to take some of the day-to-day pressure off. At the same time, kids have the run of the ship, giving adults the best of both worlds.

Doremiland Kids Clubs aboard MSC World Europa

Kids clubs on MSC World Europa are all situated on Deck 20, and are some of the most elaborate and well-thought-out facilities outside of those found aboard the ships of Disney Cruise Line .

Known collectively as "Doremiland", this massive area is actually made up of seven individual areas. These include:

Baby Club Chicco , MSC's dedicated area for kids aged six months to two years.

Mini Club for kids aged 3 to 6 years;

Juniors Club for kids aged 7 to 11 years;

Young Club for teens 12 to 14 years;

Teens Club for teens aged 15 to 17 years.

Doremiland also includes a multifunctional space known as The Studio that can be used by various age groups as needed. Admission to MSC's Doremiland is free of charge -- including baby and infant services in Baby Club Chicco, a rarity among cruise ships, most of which have a per-hour fee for the care of those under three years of age.

The 10 Biggest Cruise Ships in the World

Where to float on the biggest boats.

E very vessel that's once held the title of "biggest cruise ship" has one thing in common: It is a destination in and of itself. Of course, these enormous passenger cruise ships also transport guests to thrilling ports, exotic islands and remote locations too. It's almost as if you could live on a cruise ship !

These massive ships each have so much going on: theater and music on a multitude of stages, water slides, roller coasters and go-kart tracks, zip lines, ice skating rinks, laser tag arenas—you name it. There are also hidden cruise features waiting to be discovered and more restaurants than you will ever need to feed yourself. They are, simply put, awe-inspiring creations. Have you ever thought about how cruise ships float ?

One of the most important cruise tips for vacationing on one of these big boats is to accept that you won't be able to do it all on your first visit. Thankfully, with many itineraries to choose from, you can sail on the largest cruise ship again and again, learn cruise ship code words and have new experiences every single time you're on board one of these massive ships.

What is largest cruise ship in the world?

The current reigning champion is Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas. But next year, there will be a brand-new biggest cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas . Planned with 20 decks, 2,805 staterooms, seven pools and nine hot tubs, the future largest ship in the world is currently being built in Finland. Here are the details about the biggest and grandest ships to sail on.

Wonder of the Seas

Cruise line: Royal Caribbean

Length: 1,188 feet

Width: 215 feet

Guest capacity: 7,084

A true wonder, the current biggest ship in the world delights guests every week with a feast of activities, shows, meals and memories. Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , an Oasis-class ship that is a city at sea, has 16 guest decks, 2,204 crew members from every corner of the planet and more than 10 bars and 20 dining destinations—nine of which are complimentary. Curiously, even though the Icon of the Seas will eventually take the mantle as the largest cruise ship, Wonder will still have more staterooms than its new big sister, a whopping 2,867 of them.

It also features a carousel on a real boardwalk, a dry slide that twists down 10 decks, surfing simulators, a laser tag arena, an ice skating rink and a zip line that spans the interior width of the ship. It also has interior rooms with balconies that look out over the restaurant and a tree-lined neighborhood that looks like Central Park. Wonder of the Seas will soon lose its crown as the biggest cruise ship in the world, but it'll never lose its ability to provide unique vacations thanks to affordable cruises for every kind of traveler.

World Europa

Cruise line: MSC

Length: 1,093 feet

Width: 154 feet

Guest capacity: 6,762

MSC is not only a privately held shipping company, the largest in the world, they are also the maker of some of the largest cruise ships in the world. The World Europa , which took to the sea for the first time in 2022, is currently escorting passengers all over the Mediterranean, using one of the cleanest marine fuels to do so.

The World Europa features some of the best rooms on a cruise ship, thanks to having the most cabins with a balcony. It also has the world's longest dry slide at sea, taking adventurous cruisers down 12 decks in a shiny, twisting stainless steel tube, and bumper cars in a SportsPlex arena that also hosts rollerblading—not at the same time, however. People looking for something a little less dramatic will enjoy six pools, some surrounded by tropical greenery, 14 whirlpools and MSC's first-ever department store at sea. Finally, you'll never go hungry on this ship , given its 10 restaurants, including four main dining rooms and three buffets.

Cruise line: P&O Cruises

Length: 1,130 feet

Width: 138 feet

Guest capacity: 6,685

Whether you want the sunshine of the Caribbean or the culture found in and around Mediterranean ports, Arvia is P&O's largest cruise ship and one of the biggest cruise ships in the world, with 1,800 crew members, a three-screen cinema complex, a wide range of staterooms to choose from and four pools, including an infinity pool with a swim-up bar. There are also nearly two dozen whirlpool spas, a sauna, steam room and a hydrotherapy pool.

This means that whether you're taking a singles cruise or have children in tow—the Arvia is a family-friendly ship with age-specific kids clubs on board—serious rest and relaxation are definitely on the agenda. Then, when you're feeling spry and ready for some adventure during your vacation at sea, you can try an escape room or ropes course, play in the sports arena or strut your stuff in a dance class.

Costa Toscana

Cruise line: Costa Cruises

Length: 1,105 feet

Width: 137 feet

Guest capacity: 6,600

A sister to the Smeralda , the Costa Toscana became the fleet's largest cruise ship when it took to the water in March 2022. The ship uses LNG propulsion engines to make sea travel more sustainable, both while cruising and in ports of call around the world. An international crew of 1,678 works to deliver dream vacations for up to 6,600 passengers who will love to discover all there is to do, see and experience on board.

The ship has 1,550 staterooms ranging from interior cabins to elaborate suites, a baker's dozen pools and whirlpools, and a total of 20 restaurants, bars and lounges. Costa's new flagship vessel is a smart city at sea, offering subtly high-tech sailings that provide fun for the whole family, thanks to Peppa Pig character parties, an aqua park with water slides and a mind-bending skywalk 213 feet above the ocean! So book a vacation on one of the largest cruise ships in the world, then pack your cruise ducks and your appetite for learning how to cook at Toscana 's Food LAB cooking school, among other adventures at sea.

Celebration

Cruise line: Carnival

Guest capacity: 6,631

As cruise lines jockey for position at the top of the biggest cruise ship in the world leaderboard, the original family-fun ships are also getting larger. A total of 1,735 international crew, famously considered the best in the business, will ensure that every family's cruise on the Celebration not only maximizes the fun but also the memories, and all at some of the most affordable prices in the cruise industry.

This ship has BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, Dr. Seuss children's themed cruises with character appearances, and incredible water parks with multiple slides. Delicious food is made fast-and-fresh at Guy's Burger Joint, Shaq's Big Chicken and the Seafood Shack, as well as tasty street-food carts located near the pools. Plus, with all the extra space on the largest cruise ship in their fleet, Carnival's Playlist Productions has more stages to dazzle you and your kids with famously fantastic live music and musical theater.

Cruise line: Norwegian

Length: 1,094 feet

Width: 136 feet

Guest capacity: 3,998

With 1,700 crew members and more than 2,000 staterooms, including suites in The Haven—Norwegian's luxurious, private and tranquil ship-within-a-ship concept high atop the ship, which comes with 24-hour butler service and its own lavish sundeck—the Encore ranks among the largest cruise ships in the world. Curiously, this vessel from 2019 is still the largest in the Norwegian fleet! Both Prima  and the forthcoming Viva were built after Encore but are considerably smaller in size, bucking the cruise industry trend of "bigger is better."

Encore shines as a superior and super big ship, the fourth in the Breakaway Plus class, and features a multi-deck go-kart track, the Cavern Club music venue, fashioned after the famous Liverpool room where The Beatles became big, a virtual-reality gaming room, an outdoor laser-tag arena and some of the best food at sea. No doubt, this will become one of every passenger's favorite cruises.

Symphony of the Seas

Width: 216 feet

Guest capacity: 6,680

None of the many all-inclusive cruises take place on the largest cruise ships, but you may be forgiven for thinking you're enjoying an all-inclusive experience on Symphony of the Seas . The ship's many spectacular activities include a zip line that soars above the boardwalk many decks below, an old-fashioned carousel, Broadway-style theater shows, surfing simulators and the 10-story Abyss dry slide. There's also delicious food all over the ship that is 100% complimentary. And while you may fly on the zip line over and over again, you'll probably still wonder, Why do cruise ships have wings ?

After its maiden voyage in April 2018, Symphony was the biggest cruise ship in the world. But because of its ingenious neighborhood concept, guests rarely feel overcrowded. Seven distinct areas carve up the ship into unique spaces to play, eat, stroll, sleep and enjoy live entertainment, and the traffic flows brilliantly to make passengers feel as though they're on a more intimate ship and not cruising with upward of 6,680 other people in more than 2,700 staterooms, some of which are interior cabins with balconies that boast views of the Central Park neighborhood's greenery and eateries.

Cruise line: AIDA

Guest capacity: 6,654

While American travelers looking to cruise the Caribbean may not encounter her, the AIDAnova is not only the largest cruise ship in the AIDA fleet, she's also a revolutionary lady. The ship's Four Elements adventure deck, with its three water slides and climbing garden under the dome of a retractable glass roof, drops jaws on every sailing. The ship's more than 2,600 staterooms with 20 different types, ranging from a glorious two-deck penthouse to budget-friendly interior cabins, allow guests to sleep well and arrive in port well rested, and the two-deck spa offering 80 different treatments provides even more healing and luxury.

But AIDAnova is also impressive because it made history as the world's first cruise ship to be powered in port and at sea by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the world's cleanest burning fossil fuel. It's important that big ships can be more sustainable, but did you ever wonder why there are big balls on cruise ships ?

Sun Princess

Cruise line: Princess

Length: 1,133 feet

Guest capacity: 4,300

The Love Boat is getting much, much bigger! Yes, this is the namesake ship from the beloved '70s TV show. With 2,150 cabins, the Sun Princess is close to carrying 4,300 passengers to Europe for its inaugural season later this year. And then all around the world, people will be asking, "Why do cruise ships have to stop in Canada?"

The third ship in the history of the fleet to be graced with the iconic name, the S un Princess is poised to be a fan favorite. There are more than 29 bars, lounges and restaurants on board, with the Sea View Terrace and Bar ensconced in glass at the top and front of the ship, book-ended by the Wake View Terrace at the back, which has a stunning infinity pool hanging off the edge. Drawing inspiration from the tiered terraces of Santorini, Greece, this evocative area will have an indoor/outdoor pool to enjoy supreme relaxation during the day. But once the sun says goodbye, the pool becomes a stage and the dome above transforms into an entertainment venue with eye-popping lighting effects.

Length: 1,085 feet

Width: 141 feet

Guest capacity: 6,334

Come June 2023, one of the newest and biggest cruise ships at sea will be carrying eager pasengers, and more than 1,700 dedicated crew members, to world-class destinations in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. While on board the Euribia , cruisers will enjoy a massive amount of personal space (100-plus square feet per person) at any one of five unique pools, including one of the most intricate waterparks at sea, covering more than 10,000 square feet.

These watery areas of rest, relaxation and revelry will comfortably accommodate more than 1,000 guests at a time. Indoors, a 360-foot-long Mediterranean-style promenade is lined with myriad shops, along with some of the 20 bars and 10 restaurants found on the ship. It also features a domed LED screen that magically displays the sky and other animations throughout the day and night. MSC continues to be a favorite cruise line of environmentalist travelers looking to ease their mind and minimize their footprint, as the Euribia has an advanced onboard wastewater treatment system that doesn't allow any water to leave the ship without being treated and cleaned.

The Best Solo Cruises

Relax by the pool, attend shows, dine with new friends and more on your next solo cruise.

Whether you're embarking on your first cruise alone or you've been on solo cruises before, single travelers will find more options than ever when it comes to cruising solo. Many cruise lines offer single staterooms with the same amenities as other cabins, at a price similar to what you'd pay with double occupancy fares. You'll also find special promotions where the single supplement fee is reduced or waived, making it more affordable to reserve a spacious stateroom or luxurious suite with even more amenities – including personalized butler service, an added perk of booking with many luxury lines .

If you're ready for a maritime adventure, an extended vacation or simply a quick getaway from home, these top cruise lines offer some of the best options for solo travelers on waterways around the world.

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. Solo travelers can check out all the fun for singles on Norwegian Viva this winter on a cruise to the Caribbean , or in spring 2024 as the ship sets sail for the Mediterranean .

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.

MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. While there, singles can participate in fun-filled evening activities like a Champagne Sunset Cruise or a glow paddleboarding excursion in the lagoon, then attend the lively Luna Libre Party and the lighthouse show.

Holland America Line

Michel Verdure | Courtesy of Holland America Line

Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International features studio staterooms on select ships that range in size from 101 to 199 square feet. These solo accommodations include interior rooms, virtual balcony staterooms and a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony. The cabins do not carry the single supplement fee singles encounter when booking other types of staterooms, making them an attractive option when traveling alone.

Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.

If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. If you're sailing in the Caribbean, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and chat with other passengers at the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Luxury line Atlas Ocean Voyages offers single cruisers 183 square feet of beautifully appointed space in solo accommodations that come without single supplement fees. These ocean view staterooms feature a queen bed, a panoramic picture window, a private spa bathroom with a rain shower and body jets, a stocked minifridge replenished daily with personal favorites, and other luxurious amenities. Single guests can also book other stateroom or suite categories with single supplements starting at 50% of the double occupancy price.

The line's three intimate yacht-style cruise ships – World Navigator, World Traveller and the new World Voyager, whose inaugural season begins in Antarctica in November 2023 – are all-inclusive . Meals at all the dining venues, premium beverages and wines, gratuities, culturally immersive excursions, and more are included in the fare. With fewer than 200 guests on board, there's an atmosphere of conviviality on these ships – especially when exploring remote destinations with like-minded and adventurous travelers during expeditions in Antarctica and the Arctic.

These one-person accommodations offer a minimum of 131 square feet of space and the same upscale amenities you'll find in other category staterooms on their ships. Solo guests can look for special promotions where the single supplement is waived on select Celebrity voyages throughout the year.

Once on board the vessel, check out the daily program for activities conducive to meeting others – like wine tastings, cocktail-making classes and more.
