Mid-afternoon the PS Murray Princess departs historic Mannum, the birthplace of the Murray River trade and communication, and heads downriver while you enjoy a Welcome Dinner.

As we cruise under floodlight to our overnight mooring at Mundurra, you may see nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank.

Watch for kangaroos, hairy-nosed wombats, tortoises, egrets and many other species. Our on-board entertainer provides music for the night owls.

In 1879 the first bridge to span the Murray River was built at Edwards Crossing, which quickly became the bustling township of Murray Bridge. After a hearty breakfast, choose to join a guided tour of the town’s historic landmarks and local attractions or go on a wildlife tour at Monarto Zoo (additional cost per person).

Those who choose to experience Monarto Safari Park will arrive back on board the Murray Princess in time for lunch then join us in the Sturt Dining Room for a special presentation on the bounty of food and wine produced in the Riverland.

This afternoon, we continue our journey upriver and tonight we moor at Salt Bush Flat. After dinner, enjoy being entertained by our talented crew.

This morning join a guided nature walk where your guide will share the secrets of the local flora and fauna. It’s a great way to get in a little exercise before the Murray Princess departs and cruises a little further upriver.

Near Fromm’s Landing, we turn and head downriver to River View Lodge (near Piggy Flat / Coolcha) where your discovery vessel awaits for a wildlife tour. Travelling in small, personalised groups, we explore the maze of the river and the birdlife is amazing. Watch for darters, herons, and egrets feeding along the river’s muddy edges. The afternoon offers a choice of bocce or fishing challenges before a delicious final night dinner in the Sturt Dining Room.

We head back to Mannum and after breakfast, we reluctantly say farewell as we arrive at the Mannum Wharf.

On arrival at Murray Bridge on Saturday (from 9.00 am) the Wild Awaits and a coach will be waiting to transfer you to Monarto Safari Park, the largest Safari Park outside of Africa spanning more than 1,500 hectares and home to more than 50 species of exotic and native mammals, birds and reptiles.

You will travel through the Safari Park with commentary provided by one of Monarto Safari Parks tour hosts as you admire animals such as Giraffe, Eland, Zebra, White Rhinoceros, Cheetah, Lions, Hyena, and African Painted Dogs. You will also pass through the Asian Grasslands offering a chance to catch a glimpse of Indian Antelope, Mesopotamian Deer, Black Rhino, American Bison, red Deer, Przewalksi Horse and Scimitar-horned Oryx.

After the tour, you will have some free time in the new Visitor Centre, gift shop, and café before returning to Murray Bridge to re-board the Murray Princess in time for lunch at 11.25 am.

Depart Mannum, and travel into the famous Barossa, Australia’s richest and best-known wine-making region. Your first stop is at Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre, where you will enjoy a light morning tea while taking in the breathtaking views over the vineyards. You will have the opportunity to participate in a structured wine tasting before departing and heading to Lambert Estate in Angaston for lunch. Enjoy a two-course lunch at Lambert Estate, incorporating fresh regional produce available in season. Pair this with a glass of wine (own cost) and take in the magnificent outlook from the deck of this popular vineyard.

Next, visit Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, and learn about Maggie and her story, as well as the history behind the Farm. You’ll have an opportunity to taste some delicious Maggie Beer and Pheasant Farm products and take a photo in her famous kitchen. If time permits, purchase some afternoon tea from the cafe (own expense) and take in the peaceful surrounds of the lake and resident birdlife.

Following Maggie Beer’s, you’ll make your way by coach through the picturesque regions of Seppeltsfield and Marananga which is home to many iconic cellar doors. No trip to the Barossa is complete without visiting Seppeltsfield Road which is full of history and lined with distinctive palm trees.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery as you travel back through the picturesque Eden Valley. View the Murrayland flats from the top of Palmer hill as you descend into Mannum where you will re-board the Murray Princess or journey back to Adelaide arriving at approximately 5.30 pm or Adelaide Airport at approximately 6.00 pm.

Even better than expected. My best friend and I chose the 3 night river cruise as a way to spend time together while living in separate states. We expected it to be a quiet relaxing few days with lots of “oldies”. In fact we very active 70 year olds were by no means the youngest on board and , with all the activities on offer, we were kept very busy and met such a lot of interesting, fun people over the few days. The crew were friendly and professional, food was good if not adventurous, the scenery absolutely stunning and so varied, all viewed from our gorgeous home vessel the Murray Princess. Yes, the cabins are very basic and tiny but served the purpose. You do need to be tidy! We ladies had such a good time we are planning to take our husbands back for the 4 night trip. It is such an Aussie adventure. Ruth

We did the 4 day Murray Princess cruise . The cruise is very relaxing with delicious food and very friendly staff. A great experience. The river is so beautiful. I hadn’t expected such gorgeous scenery. The boat was great, just big enough with several lounges. There wasn’t any over crowding in any part of the boat. The excursions were good too. The cabins although small were well set out and we didn’t have any problems with space. Beds were comfy. Only thing I can recommend is that the coffee shop be opened at 7am for us coffee lovers who love a good cappuccino first thing in the mornings. There was a coffee/tea station available 24 hours a day with biscuits and a big fruit basket which was appreciated. All in all a fabulous experience and I recommend everyone take a trip down the Murray River. Colleen

Starting from Mannum for a Murray River Cruise on the Murray Princess. We had a great 4 night cruise on the Murray Princess last week. We especially liked the time we spent at the Sunnydale property checking out the sheep shearing display and going for a spotlighting tour around the property that night. The Murray Princess crew also put on a great BBQ and show as well. The crew were great in all areas of making sure of our comfort, entertain and food requirements. Judith C

However, the cabins are very small with minimal ventilation which is difficult in very hot evenings. Mealtimes are regimented; limited choice of food; musical entertainment was basic; no lounges on the top deck; lounge chairs were so worn the backing was visible. • H3810GAheatherw 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An absolutely beautiful experience My husband and I did the 7 night Upper Murraylands cruise and what a wonderful experience we had. This cruise exceeded our expectations from our lovely stateroom and it's extra trimmings to the wonderful staff who went out of their way to make us feel a part of their Princess family to the amazing and too plentiful food we enjoyed to all the off boat experiences we loved. We've waited many years to do this trip and everything about it was well worth the wait. The boat itself is just beautiful and the slow cruise through a beautiful and ever changing part of South Australia is peaceful and ever so relaxing. We are so proud that we have this in our State. We opted to pay a little more for a Stateroom and are very glad that we did and would really recommend it....we had loads more space, a fridge with mini bar, coffee machine and flowers in the room on arrival. The invitation to pre dinner drinks and nibbles with the Captain one night was also a lovely treat. Thanks Murray Princess for an amazing holiday. Read more Written February 3, 2024
  • jodyr670 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A very relaxing experience. Highly recommend. A really relaxing time. Thoroughly enjoyed and detoxed from the busy world, loved sitting on the sun deck and just watching the beautiful river and scenery. Staff were all very friendly and helpful, food was fantastic, even fresh fruit bowls and biscuits to munch on throughout the day if you were peckish. Cabins small and simple with ensuite but clean and adequate. Was only in there to sleep. Some of the lounge chairs were looking a bit tired but still comfortable. Enjoyed the off shore excursions especially the sheep and BBQ and campfire, being entertained by Johnno and the very funny Bobby, who was retiring after this cruise. It was a great time to get to know more of the crew in a relaxed atmosphere. Great bar prices and Alex and JJ soon knew who had what. Met some lovely people from all over Australia. I am absolutely blown away by the ambiance. The views. The food. The crew are exceptional. Mum being disabled we weren’t sure how she would go but we are in an accessible room and the whole team are so accommodating. I can’t fault and we have another 3 days to go on our 7 day adventure. For the first 4 nights and some the whole trip. Special mention to Nick our cruise director. Andy our entertainment. Luke and Aaron and Will from the kitchen. Thomas and John the waiters and my girl Delle. Emily the bar staff. Crew changed and we didn’t get a chance to tell them personally so hopefully they see this. We will most definitely be back. Maybe in 5 years for mums 80th. Thank you all so much for making this such a memorable experience for us both. Totally worth it and all the off boat options are amazing. So many opportunities to have river birds flying above you, from your vantage point on the upper deck: pelicans, eagles, kites, ospreys, water and wading birds, as well as white cockatoos and galahs. Spacious room ( booked a large one) with every comfort. Staff were cheerful, helpful, and patient. Wonderful food, catering to all tastes. Excursions were fun, different and really informative. The dining room may have been filled grey hair and bald heads, but an atmosphere of fun and good nature was evident. Two 'not so obvious' positives: The wonderful team of young people who supported us also would come to understand that, although older, we still have a brain; secondly, oldies travelling provides employment for thousands of fantastic young people and contributes significantly to the economy! A highly recommended experience. Read more Written October 11, 2023

Murray Princess - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Murray Princess Review

murray princess 3 day cruise

The PS Murray Princess is the largest paddle wheeler (also called a stern wheeler) in the southern hemisphere, offering an authentic cruise experience on South Australia's Murray River. The ship was built in 1986 by Goolwa Ship Construction PTY Ltd at Goolwa, near the mouth of the Murray River; it was commissioned by the entrepreneur Captain Keith Veenstra, whose first vessel was the Murray River Queen in 1973. The story goes that Captain Veenstra travelled the world in the early 1980s looking for something special for his next marine building project. After visiting the Mississippi in the United States and seeing his first wedding-cake-style, stern-wheeler paddle boat, he decided this is what he was going to build for the Murray.

Larger than other vessels on the river, the Murray Princess is built from steel and hardwood timber, with decorative lacework, a matching pair of smokestacks and a working paddle wheel that drives the ship. The wheel is 9 metres (29.5 feet) tall and has a diameter of just under 6 metres (20 feet); the original was just replaced in early 2015. The ship sits low on the water, with a waterline length of just over 67.4 metres (211 feet), an overall length of just under 70 metres (230 feet), and width of 14 metres (46 feet); that makes it just small enough to fit through the Murray's locks, and under the Paringa Bridge near the Victorian border. However, it's the draft of just 1.1 metres (3.6 feet) that enables the distinctive paddle wheeler to navigate the Murray's waters, which vary in depth and have been low in the recent past. Currently the river is deemed "full," which makes the best conditions possible for cruising.

Captain Cook Cruises (part of the Sealink Travel Group, which operates cruises in Sydney, Fiji and the Great Barrier Reef) bought the Murray Princess in 1988. It was a natural fit for the local, small-ship cruise line, offering a relaxing and informal way to explore one of Australia's iconic waterways. It cruises at a leisurely six knots, exploring townships by day and tucking away in quiet mooring spots at night.

The ship has a traditional interior decor to match her exterior stateliness, embracing the paddle wheelers of a bygone era with dark wood, dark leather and brass fittings. As is the style of authentic paddle wheelers, outside cabins open onto a shared deck, and there isn't much outdoor space. The ship is showing its age in places, but a 2012 dry dock renovation included upgrading some cabins and staterooms with a more modern look. Further enhancements including additional cabin makeovers took place in January 2015.

The Murray Princess is very much an experience appealing to a mature audience, with plenty of early mornings and early nights; on our cruise, the passengers were exclusively retirees, the eldest a former pilot from New Zealand who was 92. It's also a very communal experience with shared tours and meals, aimed at getting people to mix and mingle, sharing stories about their lives as well as their days on board. To make the process easy, on embarkation you're given a Captain Cook name tag which has your first name, the Australian state or country you're from, and your dining table assignment number written on the front, so you quickly get to know your shipmates. Many were seasoned cruise travellers who had sailed previously on the high seas and on river cruises in Europe.

The Murray Princess is all about the great outdoors and exploring. The landscape along the river is rich and varied, ranging from wetlands to sheer limestone cliffs. Gum trees cling to the sides of the cliffs, birds including cockatoos and corellas nest in holes in the rock face, sea eagles soar overhead, and huge pelicans skim the waterline. Along the way the river bank is dotted with tiny townships and settlements steeped in history; regardless of where you are on the river, activities on a given day can range from wildlife spotting to nature walks, and history tours to wine tasting. It's a relaxed and casual experience with an "open-door policy," which allows passengers to chat with the captain in the wheel room (what they call a bridge on these types of vessels) at any time.

There are a few shortcomings which may disappoint younger or traditional cruise fans; a lack of open deck space and the absence of a pool or a jacuzzi are the most obvious. It's not an all-inclusive experience; you'll rack up extra charges for all alcohol, soft drinks and specialty coffees; and additional shore experiences including the Bush Tucker Breakfast and Nocturnal Tour in Sunnydale. Transfers from three pickup points in Adelaide are included in the fare.

Overall, a cruise on Murray Princess is a fun and enjoyable (if not inexpensive) experience; for many people who go, it's undoubtedly a "bucket list" trip. If you enjoy relaxed cruising, community spirit, exploring quaint townships and seeing plenty of wildlife, it is one to put on the list. And there's no chance of getting seasick.

Fellow Passengers

Fellow passengers hail mostly from Australia, with some from New Zealand and occasionally others from the United Kingdom or the United States. A Murray Princess cruise is very much a grown-up experience attracting mostly older baby boomers and retirees aged 60-plus, with single cruisers also welcome. When it comes to families, however, the ship has no specific facilities or fares for children; given the demographic it attracts, it is unlikely you'll see any junior cruisers on board.

Captain Cook Murray Princess Dress Code

Generally, smart casual clothing is all you need on board the Murray Princess, with sportswear or shorts during the day (depending on the season), and no formal nights except for the Captain's Dinner on the final night aboard, where Captain Cook says a jacket and tie for men, and cocktail dress for women, "won't be out of place." Other essentials include sport shoes or flat walking shoes for tender boat rides, walking on deck, and onshore activities; swim wear for the warmer months; and a long-sleeved shirt and pants for sun protection. In the winter, warm layers and a weatherproof jacket can be useful for excursions, going ashore, and sitting outside.

Things To Do

Subscriber only, travel | port canaveral chalks up record month amid growing cruise demand.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas arrived to Port Canaveral to home port for the first time on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

Port Canaveral saw just under 800,000 cruise passengers move on and off its ships in March as part of a record year that keeps topping expectations.

That set a one-month record for the port with an average of nearly 25,600 people a day around 93 cruise ship calls. March is traditionally one of the strongest months of the year for the port with its spring break traffic.

It also marked the halfway point of the fiscal year that began in October 2023. Six months in, the port has seen 3.9 million passenger movements from 479 ship calls.

“The industry itself is very, very strong right now,” said Port CEO Capt. John Murray at the port commission meeting on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of expansion plans. The companies are starting to reorder ships again after the pandemic.”

NCL details new dining on Canaveral-bound Norwegian Aqua

That includes more ships from Norwegian Cruise Line, which has been sending its new vessels to Port Canaveral as they debut including next year’s Norwegian Aqua.

“So a lot of great things, a lot of great things, a lot of enthusiasm and I can say that the industry is 110% of what it was prior to the pandemic,” Murray said. “They are back and booming right now. So we’re fortunate to be taking advantage of that here at the port.”

Operating revenue for the year is already at $98 million, which is $3.6 million above budget. It also means the record projection of $187 million in operating revenue through the end of the fiscal year in September is likely to get surpassed as well.

Ship capacity is determined to be at 100% if each stateroom is occupied by two passengers, so ships sailing with families, for instance, will push capacity above 100% and in turn increase revenue for the port from the cruise lines as well as add to an uptick in parking charges.

Royal Caribbean to send massive Utopia of the Seas to Port Canaveral

One of the big drivers has been the addition of a second Oasis-class vessel by Royal Caribbean so that the port hosts two of the largest cruise ships in the world.

Allure of the Seas joined Wonder of the Seas last fall to begin short three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas, and will continue that until the debut of Royal’s new Utopia of the Seas this summer. Since arriving, it has added more than 650,000 passenger movements to the port’s growing tally.

The port has been home port to 13 ships from Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian and MSC Cruises, and is set to welcome its first ships from both Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises this fall.

Port Canaveral plots timeline to take over marina for new cruise terminal

Right now it has six cruise terminals, but is beginning the work to eventually build a seventh later this decade. During an interview earlier in April at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach, Murray said the key to growth for the port will be a shift in how the port gives access to each terminal, such as how it plans to operate its seventh terminal.

“It’s going to be multiuser. It’s not going to be a single-use facility. That’s going to be how our concept of operations would be going forward,” Murray said. “The only way you’re going to get good utilization of a terminal is if you can put multiple brands in there and not have it dedicated to just one user.”

That’s how it runs several of its terminals now including Disney Cruise Line at Cruise Terminal 8 and Carnival Cruise Line at its newest terminal, Cruise Terminal 3.

“If they’ve got seven days a week at one terminal and they’re only using three, maybe four days, that’s not high utilization,” Murray said. “Yet, it’s a facility that we’ve got blocked out that we’re not getting any benefit from it for the investment we’ve made.”

He notes Cruise Terminal 10, which gets used by three brands, gets used six days a week.

Murray said with newer and bigger ships on order from all the major lines, the demand is just going to continue to spike for parking space at Florida’s big three ports.

“I think the point now for all of the major brands is finding somewhere to operate,” Murray said. “Because there’s only Miami, [and] we all know how full Miami is; Everglades, [which has] limited capacity or opportunity for growth; and we have more land, but you know, it’s not all going to get committed to the cruise industry.”

“So the question is, how do we allow more opportunities for the cruise lines to operate? This is one — get high utilization out of the terminal.”

Princess Michael’s Russian tycoon friend shot dead in Moscow

Princess Michael: "... a very good friendship..."

A wealthy Russian businessman who became friends with Princess Michael of Kent has been murdered in an apparent contract killing.

Mikhail Kravchenko, who owned a large chain of furniture stores, was shot at least six times in the chest and head when his car was ambushed yards from his home in the village of Peredelkino, just outside Moscow. Police are investigating whether he could have been the victim of a business dispute with rivals.

Mr Kravchenko, 46, was returning to his house in the early hours of Sunday morning when his Mercedes was overtaken by another vehicle, which then blocked the road in front of him. Police said that two men with handguns opened fire on his car.

Mr Kravchenko was hit in the chest
