Improving brain capital

Artificial Intelligence, abstract artistic human head portrait made of dotted particles array, vector software digital visual interface. Digital soul, spirit of technological time.

Neuroscience is a rapidly expanding field that touches on many other scientific fields. Its multidisciplinary nature attracts physicians and scientists from diverse backgrounds that reflect a wide-range of interests and points of view for understanding the human brain. The human brain demands attention not just from the realm of neuroscience, but from the broader public sphere.

What does this mean exactly?

On April 19th, Harris Eyre, M.D., Ph.D., psychiatrist and neuroscientist from the Public Policy Institute at Rice University, spoke in-depth about the effects of the economy on our brain capital at MUSC’s Lab to Leaders conference. This annual event serves as a platform for graduate research students to share their latest research with the public, aiming to enhance scientists’ communication efforts and engage a wider audience in scientific discussions.

Eyre’s work focuses on raising awareness about how important our brain capital is and his presentation illuminated the critical importance of brain capital and its impact on various aspects of life, including the economic landscape. Brain capital is defined as a combination of brain health and brain skills that contribute to overall performance, neurological function and mental health.

"As the field of neuroscience continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly evident that our understanding of the human brain can be applied to a variety of disciplines that affect our society and its economic landscape." -- Jaci Fleming

Eyre pointed out that our current economy cultivates an environment that has negative effects on brain capital. This can cause poor brain cognition and performance, which results in low labor productivity, suboptimal workforce skills and educational disruptions. He calls this a “brain negative economy”. An economy centered on aspects such as industrialized food systems that accelerate depression and anxiety, contribute to air pollution, spread misinformation and disinformation, and lack overall investment in brain science, care and innovation.

But how do we combat an economy that has obvious negative effects on our brains?

“A systematic approach is needed to improve brain health,” says Eyre, “one that prioritizes scientific breakthroughs and educates the public about habits that are healthy for their brains.”

In order to work towards bettering the health of your own brain, Eyre emphasizes the importance of making connections between interdisciplinary ideas in order to diversify your environment and strengthen brain health and skills. Thoughts like these help to cultivate new interests and communities and to enhance the breadth and depth of these experiences. Which all help to boost brain health.

Redesigning our cities, workplaces, learning environments and homes has the potential to improve human health and brain capital for the better. A combination of these efforts with personal goals such as defining one's values, discovering new disciplines and optimizing personal skill sets will aid in working towards a more ‘brain positive economy’.

Altogether, Eyre’s insights shed a light on the significance of prioritizing brain capital in our society today. As the field of neuroscience continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly evident that our understanding of the human brain can be applied to a variety of disciplines that affect our society and its economic landscape. By recognizing the detrimental effects of a ‘brain negative economy’ and working towards systematic approaches that improve brain capital, we will begin to pave the way for a future where improved brain health is a collective pursuit.

ZHdK is Zurich’s music college. It has ties with music colleges in Switzerland and abroad . At the same time, it forms part of an integrated university of the arts, where it not only contributes to the diversity of disciplines on offer but also acquires a special status afforded by that structure: a music college under a common organizational and physical roof encompassing all of the arts is utterly unique. The set-up gives it a striking and attractive outward appeal and continuously stimulates internal debate and scrutiny the meaning and values that drive teaching and research. Booklet

The Department of Music is the biggest of the five departments at ZHdK. It offers two Bachelor’s and four Master’s degree programmes, a PreCollege Music preparatory course, all manner of different continuing education courses and a doctorate programme in partnership with the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz . The department is home to two research institutes (the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology and the Institute for Music Research ), a centre of excellence for  Music Physiology  and a Music Club . Alongside teaching and research, ZHdK Music is extremely active in production, primarily in the greater Zurich area, and hosts over 600 events each year, mainly from the Toni Campus.

An average of around 800 students from over 50 countries are enrolled at ZHdK Music. The department also boasts 350 lecturers and a further 170 members of staff (FTE). Students hoping to study at ZHdK must take artistic admissions examinations and must have achieved top marks (i.e. are subject to the numerus clausus) at school.

The Toni Campus houses many facilities, including: 92 teaching rooms, 67 practice rooms, 49 studios, 40 workshop studios, 9 ballet and dance studios, 5 concert halls, ensemble rooms, rehearsal stages and lecture halls, 4 music and movement rooms and restaurants, 2 sound studios and galleries, a music club with a bar , a computer music and sound technology lab, a cinema , a design museum , a film studio, a device loaning scheme, a media and information centre , an IT shop and service desk, a day care centre, a rooftop terrace, a piano studio and a post office.

Music is not only the largest, but also the most international department at the ZHdK. Our students come from all five continents.

The  Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology  brings together scientists and artists from various professional backgrounds: mathematics, engineering, audio engineering, psychoacoustics, computer science, generative art, media art, musicology, music theory, performance and composition. This rich mix encourages projects examining the relationship between technology and musical practice, exploring critically the tradition of contemporary and electroacoustic music using methods of both classical and artistic research. In addition to research and teaching, other activities at ICST include musical creation made possible through residencies for composers , the realization of concerts, workshops, talks and other public events  and an the documentation of electroacoustic music made publicly available in the ICST Archives.

Research is focused on music performance as a form of communication between performer and audience. This firstly includes the performer’s analytical and hermeneutic understanding of the work and its implicit reading and performance conventions. Research into selected areas of historical and contemporary performance practice is also regarded as essential. In addition, the performative action of the artist interpreting the work is investigated with respect to neuroscientific, psychological and physiological aspects, ultimately with the aim of reflecting on the action on the audience of the performance as an aesthetic and physical presence, and the associated reactive impact on the status of the work. Attention is given to the improvisation, composition, arrangement and reproduction of historical and contemporary music, in the widest possible variety of performance and documentation formats.

In the field of classical performance, orchestra places worldwide are often filled on the basis of rehearsals. To prepare our students for this, ZHdK offers semester-based psycho-physiological training in playing and singing, audition boot camp and courses on learning strategies. Every year, the Department of Music at the Zurich University of the Arts organizes a large-scale rehearsal for students playing orchestra instruments. Leading voices from Swiss professional orchestras give us feedback, an opportunity to practice in this format and also to work on profiling and improved networking within the Swiss orchestral landscape.

When I'm at ZHdK, it feels like imagination is the only limit!

Alberto Mancini says about his studies at the ZHdK: \" Arriving at ZHdK as an exchange student from Italy, I had high expectations, but the reality has far surpassed them. The opportunities here are boundless, compelling me to enroll as a master's student. What I find most invaluable is the ability to collaborate with and live alongside artists from a myriad of disciplines. We media composers have the unique opportunity to create alongside dancers, gamers, technology artists, classical musicians, cast members, and visual artists of every stripe. When I'm at school, it feels like imagination is the only limit; I have the vivid sensation that the ZHdK would provide me all the support I need to become the artist I aspire to be. And that's amazing. \"

At first glance, maths and music are a mismatch. But they are perfect for me. I studied mathematics, worked in the field of data science, and then decided to study organ. I have enjoyed making music ever since I was little: I play the organ, piano and flute. I decided to study mathematics because I find mathematics and the world of science fascinating and challenging. The career prospects are also very good. After completing my studies, however, I was drawn back to music.

Today, I try to combine the exciting aspects of both disciplines, for example by working on interdisciplinary projects.

Today, I try to combine the exciting aspects of both disciplines, for example by working on interdisciplinary projects. The organ is easy to describe in terms of numbers and statistics: how many manuals and keys, how many stops and how many pipes does an organ have? It is an extraordinary, often very large and powerful instrument. Every instrument is unique! The length and scale of the pipes and the tuning of the organ can also be described and explained in terms of mathematical ratios.

In a world in which everything is logically thought through, we need numbers. The counterpoint and complement to this is music. I listen to a lot of music myself, for example, when programming. Music touches us humans: dancing, celebrating, crying, laughing – music comforts, calms, stirs up. The world needs both: science and art that complement each other and enrich society. I would like to convey my love for music to others and pass on a little love through music. After my studies, I would like to work as an organist while continuing to work as a data scientist. The world of science is just as exciting as the world of art!

Rory mcilroy, shane lowry win 2024 zurich classic of new orleans in playoff, share this article.

musc campus tour

The cream finally rose to the top at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

In a city where celebrity chefs like the late Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagasse rule, past major winners and European Ryder Cup stars Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry teamed up to take the title with a par on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff on Sunday in Avondale, Louisiana.

McIlroy, No. 2 in the world, and Lowry, No. 39, needed a birdie at 18 to finish with a 72-hole total of 25-under 263 and force a playoff with Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer who finished their round two hours and 59 minutes earlier after shooting a tournament-tying 9-under 63 in the alternate-shot format employed in the final round.

McIlroy earned his 25 th career Tour title, tying Tommy Armour, Johnny Miller and Macdonald Smith for 23 rd on the all-time Tour wins list.

“To win any PGA Tour event is very cool, but to do it with one of your closest friends, we’ve known each other for a long, long time, probably like over 20 years, so to think about where we met and where we’ve come from, to be on this stage and do this together, really, really cool journey that we’ve been a part of, and yeah, just awesome to be able to do it alongside this guy,” McIlroy said.

On paper, the playoff was a mismatch of epic proportions. Ramey, 31, entered the week ranked 233 rd in the world and outside the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings, his lone win at the opposite-field Corales Puntacana Championship in 2022.

Trainer, 33, won the 2019 Puerto Rico Open but has struggled so much in the ensuing years that he considered finding another line of work. He entered the week ranked 387 th in the world and 171 st in the FedEx Cup standings. With both in need of a partner last year, they joined forces and recorded a top-10 finish at the Tour’s lone official team event during the FedEx Cup season.

“So decided to run it back this year, and I feel like we have a good thing going,” Trainer said.

On a windswept Sunday, they combined to make 11 birdies, including at the first five holes on the back nine and take the clubhouse lead.

“We just had it going so well,” Trainer said. “I don’t want to take all the credit for the putting because Chad also putted extremely well, but it worked out so good.”

Ramey agreed that Trainer’s putter was deadly and the birdies kept piling up.

“I finally had to putt on hole 13 or 14 and I hadn’t putted since the second hole,” Ramey said. “I was just trying to give Martin some good looks.”

Then they had time for lunch and waited as Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard (69), who finished third, gave it their best shot. Hubbard credited a text from his brother on Saturday night that helped pump him up about playing in the second-to-last group with McIlroy and Lowry, telling him to treat it as his personal Ryder Cup. “This is about the closest thing certainly that I’ve had so far in my career. I definitely took that to heart and tried to be really grateful for that opportunity today to kind of feel what that might feel like, playing against an all-Euro team and that crazy format. Alternate shot is just so stressful,” Hubbard said.

Narrowly missing out on joining the playoff when Brehm’s 10-foot birdie putt from the fringe at the last burned the right edge couldn’t spoil what still amounted to a successful partnership.

“We’re still going to party tonight,” Hubbard added.

For much of the day, it looked like 54-hole leaders Zac Blair and Patrick Fishburn, who grew up playing together in Ogden, Utah, and had been teammates in junior high, high school and and college at BYU, would both be celebrating their first Tour victories. However, they made a double bogey at a par 3 on each side, the latter at the 17 th hole and it sealed their fate, a fourth-place tie (72).

McIlroy and Lowry entered the day trailing by two and their hopes for wearing the belts awarded to the champions became dicier after making bogey on two of their first three holes. But they bounced back with four birdies in a five-hole stretch starting at the seventh and played the last 12 holes in 5 under.

“It showed a lot about our characters and how much we wanted to win this thing,” Lowry said.

None of it came easily, including at 13 when McIlroy had to play from 111 yards in a sand-filled divot at 13 and chunked it. Still, they salvaged par. At 14, McIlroy drew a beauty at the par 3 that stopped 10 feet past the hole and twirled his club in satisfaction, but Lowry, who switched putters this week and admitted he never fully trusted the club, misread the putt. At 16, McIlroy drove into a fairway bunker but Lowry wedged from 133 yards to 10 feet – “pulled it a bit,” he said – and McIlroy clenched his fist when the birdie putt dropped to make it a three-way tie at the top. Just when they seem poised to put the tournament away, Lowry missed the 17 th green wide right and they failed to rescue par and dropped one stroke behind again. But McIlroy’s pitch from left of the green at the par-5 18 th  hopped and stopped 3 feet from the hole for the tying birdie and a round of 4-under 68.

The playoff, which returned to 18, lasted just one hole because Trainer duffed a chip for his team’s third shot and after making putt after putt all day, he failed to convert a 6-foot par putt to keep their dream of winning alive. Trainer looked up to the sky in dismay, knowing he had pushed the putt right of the hole.

“Golf is hard, and sometimes it doesn’t go your way,” he said.

It marked the first win of the Tour season for McIlroy, who had recorded just one top-10 finish to date at the Valero Texas Open earlier this month, and the first victory for Lowry since claiming the 2019 British Open. (The latter also became exempt for the final three Signature events.)

“We felt like coming into the week that we both could do with a big jump in the FedEx Cup, and we both said at the start of the week, let’s go and get 400 points each. That’s what we’ve done, and I nearly feel a little bit bad taking them because Rory carried me a lot of the way. But yeah, they’re mine, and they’re not going away,” Lowry said.

This is not a drill. Rory McIlroy singing Don't Stop Believing pic.twitter.com/y5PkEDoqo4 — Brody Miller (@BrodyAMiller) April 28, 2024

From playing together in junior golf to the Ryder Cup and now winners at the Zurich Classic, Lowry and McIlroy have shared a special bond.

“Anytime this man wants to partner with me, I’ll be happy to do so,” Lowry said.

“I’d say we’re going to come back and defend next year; what do you think?” McIlroy said to his partner.

“I hope so,” Lowry said. “I’ll be here.”

ETH address format to indicate your institutional affiliation (to be used for all publications)

The use of the standardised address format is also important so that scientific publications can be assigned to ETH Zurich.

Certain ETH designations may not be used for the address details:

  • "ETH Hönggerberg" / "ETH Zentrum"*
  • "Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich" / "Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich"

Article 18 of the ETH Zurich Guidelines on scientific integrity (Integrity Guidelines) regulates further aspects regarding the indication of institutional affiliation in scientific publications. Newest Gamma Knife offers options to people with brain metastases, abnormalities

a group of doctors, nurses and techs pose around the Elekta Esprit Gamma Knife machine at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center

It is, as Istvan Takacs, M.D. , likes to say, the difference between an Olympic diver silently piercing the water’s surface and a weekend partier’s splattering full belly flop.

And when it comes to your brain, the targeted dive is preferred whenever possible. Takacs, a neurosurgeon, and Charlotte Rivers, M.D. , a radiation oncologist, work together at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center  in Charleston to offer Gamma Knife radiosurgery to people with tumors or other abnormalities in their brains. They’re excited that the center is one of the first in the U.S. to offer the newest version of this technology, the Elekta Esprit , which has some upgrades to improve patient comfort and to increase the types of cases that qualify for the treatment. Most of all, they’re proud to be able to help some 300 people each year, most of whom have cancer that has metastasized, or spread, to the brain. “Once you have cancer that has spread to the brain, then by definition that’s Stage 4, and we always tell patients that the cancer is usually not curable,” Rivers explained. “But what we are able to do is help people maintain their quality of life and prevent neurologic symptoms.” Treating brain metastases means that the oncologist can concentrate on the patient’s primary cancer. “We can keep tumors at bay in the head, which is amazing because it reduces the pressure on hospital beds because people are treated as outpatients – and they get well, too,” Takacs said. “It allows people to go on to clinical trials, which they were previously banned from. And it keeps their minds clear because the technology is such that the radiation is very focused.” For Cindy Petry of Murrells Inlet, who received Gamma Knife treatment in March 2019, this means she gets to dote on her two grandchildren and spend time with family and friends. “I just do everyday life stuff. I pay the bills, grocery shop – I have not taken one minute of this for granted,” she said.

Gamma Knife patient Cindy Petry poses in a gazebo at MUSC

When Petry first got sick, it wasn’t clear that such simple tasks would be in her future. Petry’s first indication that something was wrong was when, home alone, she had a seizure that left her paralyzed along one side. She assumed that she’d had a stroke. But at the local hospital, the doctor told her she had a tumor in the brain and needed to be transferred to Hollings. At Hollings, doctors determined that she had lung cancer that had spread, including to more than a half dozen spots in her brain. In the past, the treatment for these “brain mets” was whole-brain radiation, which is what it sounds like – blasting the entire brain with radiation. That does work, Rivers said, and in certain cases it’s necessary, but it comes with a higher risk of neurocognitive side effects like short-term memory problems or long-lasting fatigue. “Over the past 15 years or so, there have been a lot of studies that have shown that doing radiosurgery doesn't have those side effects,” Rivers said. For this reason, the Hollings team tries to use Gamma Knife instead of whole brain radiation whenever possible. “You have a much lower risk of long-term memory problems, which is really important, especially because people with brain mets are living so much longer now,” Rivers said. “We are pretty aggressive as far as trying to do radiosurgery whenever we can. We’ve treated patients with up to 60 tumors.” And, indeed, Petry didn’t have any side effects from the Gamma Knife. Her husband and friends who had accompanied her to Charleston wanted her to rest after the treatment. But, after a full day at the clinic, she was starving. “They kept trying to get me to go back to the hotel, and I said, ‘No, I want a steak and a baked potato.’ They looked at each other – because I looked like Herman Munster at this point – and thank God they walked into that restaurant with me, and I ate a whole steak, and I ate a whole baked potato,” she said.

Q. What is Gamma Knife? Gamma Knife uses 192 separate beams of radiation to target specific spots in the brain. The technology is used only for treating the brain. Q. What can Gamma Knife treat? Brain metastases (cancer in other parts of the body that has spread to the brain) Meningioma Glioblastoma or high-grade glioma Trigeminal neuralgia Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) Q. Do I need to make multiple trips to Charleston? The Gamma Knife team works to minimize trips to Charleston for out-of-town patients. It is possible to do a telehealth consult prior to treatment and to have follow-up MRI scans at your home location.

Part of her “Herman Munster look” was the small holes in her head left by the frame. The frame lines the patient up so that 192 ultrathin beams of radiation can converge with pinpoint precision on the tumor. In this way the radiation gets to the tumor and the effects on healthy brain tissue are minimized.

Treatment times vary but can sometimes take all day, depending on how many spots are being targeted and where they are in the brain. “The trick to stereotactic radiation is that you create a radiation field that snugly mimics the contours of the tumor. And the more complex the shape, the longer it takes,” Takacs said. The new Elekta Esprit model includes a “frameless” option for certain cases. Instead of using a head frame to maintain the patient’s position, an individualized mask can be used. “We have some patients that we’ve treated several times before in a frame for metastatic disease, and then they’ve developed one new small spot, and we’ll say, ‘Hey, we can do this in a mask. We don’t have to put you through the frame,’” Rivers said. “And they have been very appreciative of that.” The mask also means that the team can now offer fractionated treatments, or treatment spread over several days. “It just adds a lot of flexibility,” Rivers said. “Data that's coming out is showing that for larger brain metastases – tumors that are 3 centimeters or larger – it may be safer and more effective to treat them over three sessions in a row instead of a single session. With the mask, we've also treated a few patients with very large meningiomas in the skull base or in the brain who would not have been able to be safely treated in a single session. But now, we can do a slightly gentler treatment over several days in a row.” However, the frame has been redesigned into a more patient-friendly shape for those patients who do need it. Even though the mask wasn’t available in 2019, Petry said Gamma Knife is worth it. “Listen – any time you have the option of not having your head cut open, I would take that any day. Screws and all,” she said. “I think it’s a wonderful thing.” After the Gamma Knife, Petry’s lung cancer was treated with medication. She underwent 44 rounds of treatment, until the medication seemed to be doing more harm than good. “Doctor Sherman was here at the time, and she said, ‘Have you ever thought about taking a break?’” Petry said. “That was a scary thought to me. What does a break mean? Does a break mean that it comes back with a vengeance? Am I going to be better? Or worse?” Petry hesitated to stop treatment but decided to pause after the side effects became too much. “And I’ve been good for the last two years,” she said. “I went from ‘dead’ to good.”

Through inter-professional collaboration and innovation, we enrich the learning environment, increase our capacity to conduct research, and augment our ability to provide service. We are a dynamic and responsive college that generates solutions and contributes to the overall health and well-being of the citizens of our state and beyond.

It is critical that students of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds have the opportunity to be educated in our programs, to succeed, and to become leaders shaping the health care environment of the future. ” – Dr. Zoher F.
