Norway in a nutshell® Winter Tour
This is Norway’s most popular tour as the full tour takes you across stunning snow capped mountains and icy fjords. You start with a train ride on the Bergen Railway from Oslo, considered "Europe's most beautiful railway" by Lonely Planet. At Myrdal you change to the Flåm Railway, on numerous «most scenic train trips» lists as well, down the very attractive Flåm Valley. From Flåm you take the ferry through the majestic Aurlandsfjord, and the narrow and dramatic UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord to the village of Gudvangen. From here, you continue the tour with a scenic bus ride to Voss before you make your way to Bergen by train. We recommend staying in beautiful Bergen for a couple of days before returning home. The best part is you can customize the trip as you like, start and end where you like, stay and do what you like along the way! To fully appreciate the tour we suggest setting aside a minimum of three days.
Suggested activities during this tour: Fjord Safari and Viking Dinner | Snowshoe Hiking in Flåm | Voss Gondol | Fjord Cruise in Oslo
How to book your tour: Instructions here
Sognefjord in a nutshell Winter Tour
This is our longest fjord cruise, as the Sognefjord is called the King of the fjords for a good reason: it is the second longest fjord in the world. The tour has the added bonus of including two of the world's most scenic rail trips - starting (or ending) your experience the train ride between Oslo and Bergen over snow coated mountains. You will also take a ride on the famous Flåm Railway on this tour as well as the winter fjord cruise on the Sognefjord. A stopover in the charming fjord village Balestrand or Sogndal is "a must" before continuing on the trip to Oslo or Bergen. You have the same flexibility when booking this tour to customize it with activities and overnight stays according to your own interests.

Norway Winter Trip Itinerary
Your arrival at the hip and vibrant Norwegian capital marks the start of your winter adventure. Your friendly driver will greet you at the airport and take you to your luxurious hotel. Once there, spend the first day exploring awesome Oslo at your own pace. On Day 2, join a local guide and see many fascinating corners of this elegant, clean and chic capital while learning about the city’s past and present. We recommend that you spend some of your time in Oslo learning about Norway’s rich maritime history in the awesome little museums of Bygdøy Island, affectionately known as “museum island.”
Continuing your journey, embark on the Norway in a Nutshell®, a trip which will take you through some of Norway’s most beautiful fjord scenery. You will experience the scenic Bergen Railway, the breathtaking Flåm Railway, the Aurlandsfjord, and the narrow and dramatic UNESCO-protected Nærøyfjord.
Included in this segment of your trip is a night in beautiful Flåm, which will allow you to further immerse yourself in the splendor of Norway. Feel the thrill of a fjord safari aboard a fast RIB boat along the Nærøyfjord and make a stop in the little village of Undredal, where you will taste some authentic Norwegian goat cheese. On Day 4 you will depart Flåm via the world-famous Norway in a Nutshell®, which will take you through gorgeous fishing villages all the way to Bergen, the “gateway to the fjords.” The best part: don’t worry about carrying your luggage on this journey because we will deliver it to your hotel in Bergen for you.
Day 5 starts with a private guided tour of Norway’s second largest city: Bergen. There you can eat lunch at the Fish Market, admire the entire city atop Mount Fløyen and soak in the local art at the KODE museums. There is no shortage of beauty in Bergen, a city that always offers a fantastic balance of modern and traditional. On Day 6, from Bergen, the “Gateway to the Fjords,” we fly you north of the Arctic Circle to Tromso, this one dubbed the “Gateway to the Arctic.” Right away you will have your first chance for an encounter with the Northern Lights, weather permitting. Day 7 is very special as it marks the true beginning of your Lapland adventure. We prepared for you a fantastic Sami experience with reindeer sledding, a traditional Sami meal, native songs and stories and, with some luck, another encounter with the magnificent Northern Lights. Earlier that same day you will experience natural wonders only found in the Arctic, when you join a tour to explore the rich and exotic flora and fauna of Finnmark. Day 8 gives you free time to discover more of Tromso on your own and leads you to your grand finale: Kirkenes!
When you land in Kirkenes you will be greeted by the coolest taxi “drivers” you will ever meet: a team of husky dogs ready to take you to the Kirkenes Snow Hotel on the most memorable taxi ride of your life! Close to the Finnish and Russian borders, Kirkenes offers excellent opportunities for Northern Lights viewing and also a vast array of options to all of those who seek a kind of “softcore” adventure typical of the region. There we will present you with opportunities to search for the Aurora Borealis on snowmobiles, try some snowshoeing, go dog sledding and catch (and eat) your own king crab and other Arctic catches. Furthermore, you will be able to experience the magical dance of the Northern Lights from your own Gamme Cabin (rustic cabin with a glass wall for viewing) and spend a night in a hotel suite built entirely in ICE! Conclude your adventure with a return to Oslo for a night at a hotel by the airport, making your return home the following day convenient and stress-free.

Tour Style To meet the needs of various types of travelers, we choose to operate various types of tours, and depending on your selected package will mean different services are provided throughout your trip. The following descriptions of each tour style we hope will ensure that each traveller has appropriate expectations before they start their travels:
- Fully Escorted - This tour is fully escorted by an expert English-speaking guide who will accompany you throughout the tour.
- Group Tour - Offers unparalleled value for money and are the perfect style of travel for those on a budget, though still eager to pack as much into their itinerary as possible. These tours tick all the boxes with an abundance of inclusions such as sightseeing highlights, expert tour guides, quality accommodation, transfers, coach transportation, some meals and more. Please note that the maximum group size will vary between deals and will be mentioned within the Fine Print of each deal page.
Northern Lights Please note, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomena and can't be guaranteed. The dates provided will give you the best chance of hopefully viewing the lights during your trip, but Inspiring Vacations will not be liable for any departures which unfortunately don't see the Northern Lights during their trip.
What to pack for your Norway Winter Tour
To ensure your comfort we suggest packing base and mid layers, along with a substantial winter jacket, a wool or fleece hat, balaclava/buff, gloves, a woolly jumper, scarf, winter boots.. Keep in mind the layering principle: it's more effective to wear several thin layers than a few thick ones.
In exceptionally cold conditions, consider wearing two pairs of gloves – a thick pair of mitts (as mitts keep your hands warmer by not separating the fingers) and a thin pair of gloves underneath for finger dexterity. For those susceptible to cold extremities, consider acquiring carbon hand and foot warmers, typically found in reputable outdoor stores.
It is highly recommended to pack (or buy in a local shop) snow spikes/cleats. These anti-slip traction accessories for your shoes will come in very handy towards navigating slippery roads and slopes. Just keep these handy as you will be expected to remove them before entering shops and restaurants.
Health & Mobility Requirements
All participants must be in good physical condition to fully engage in this journey. For the safety and welfare of yourself and fellow travellers, if you are feeling unwell prior to departure, we advise staying home and contacting us to arrange alternate plans.
Prior to selecting your trip, carefully review the itinerary to assess your ability to comfortably manage our travel style. Please be aware that if, based on evaluation by our leader or local representative, a participant is deemed unable to safely complete the itinerary, we retain the right to exclude them from all or part of the trip without reimbursement.
It is advisable to consult your physician for current medical travel advisories and any required vaccinations before embarking. We recommend carrying a first aid kit and any necessary medications in their original packaging, as they may not be readily available during travel. For those carrying medication, it's essential to check your government's foreign travel guidelines for local restrictions or regulations.
Pre and Post-Tour Accommodation & Extra Services
You can enhance your holiday by arriving or departing before or after the tour. On this tour you can choose from the following options:
Pre Tour Accommodation
- $320.00 per room, per night for double and twin share
- $153.00 per room, per night for solo travellers
Post Tour Accommodation
- $266.00 per room, per night for double and twin share
- $203.00 per room, per night for solo travellers
Please select the number of extra nights required in the 'Additional Nights Accommodation' field when making your purchase. The additional cost for these arrangements will be added to your final payment invoice and are subject to availability.

To enhance your journey, we are offering guests a choice of the following optional activities (prices are per person):

Please note that you must select your Optional Tours no later than 70 days before departure, after which you will be required to purchase them on tour. Please keep in mind that anything purchased on-tour is subject to availability and prices may vary as you will be paying in local currency. We appreciate your understanding.

Norway Fjord Trekking
The trip was very well organized and the experience of the guide made the hikes very enjoyable and safe. I really enjoyed the hikes and the trip but it would have been great to chose an alternative for the glacier hike.
Magical Fjord Adventure
All arrangements went well. We especially appreciated the stay at Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand with delicious breakfast and dinner buffets included. All in all, the tour was a great choice since our hotels and transportation between places were taken cared of and sightseeing in Norway is easy with the availability of Visitors Centers, convenient transportation systems and tourist friendly options like the Oslo and Bergen passes. This tour option is great way to experience this beautiful country and see it’s major cities, fjords and countryside.

Magic of the Fjords
The experience in Norway was fantastic - from the wonderful landscapes to the activities to the food and accommodations. The tour guide (Marina) was knowledgeable, engaging, and extremely helpful to ensure the trip was as smooth and fun as possible. Fjords, Charms & Traditions - 8 days
Itinerary was very good, we saw all of the beautiful spots we wanted to see in Norway. However, the 'trip notes' brochure was generalized for the tour and it would have been very helpful to have a detailed plan for timing of travel and events on each day of the tour. Also, the tour guide from Vision of Scandanavia could have also been better at giving us these details, instead, he gave us the information in bits and pieces each day, so we were not always aware of when we had early departures and when we had more free time until the evening prior. The other complaint is that we confirmed we needed twin beds in each hotel as we are 2 women cousins traveling together, but for the last 3 nights of the tour, the hotels gave us a double room and we had to be moved. Other people on our tour who needed twin bed rooms also had this problem. All in all, a very enjoyable trip but these minor issues should be addressed.

What people love about norway tours.
Active and rewarding trip.
Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!

It was unforgettable in so many ways, highlights after highlights. We knew to expect a lot after our trip to Iceland a couple of years ago, also organised by Nordic Visitor. Our expectations were exceeded and more. We saw northern lights three times, the food everywhere was excellent, experienced dog sledding in the moonlight and sleeping in the SnowHotel, and we saw a white reindeer! How lucky we are to have experienced all that. We have now returned home, happy and full of awe.

Frequently Asked Questions About Northern Lights Tours
We know you may have some questions before you book, so we’ve answered the most important ones for you. You can also find more detailed answers and travel ideas in our Norway Travel Guide . Or, if you want to know more about our processes and payment details, check out our FAQ page .
1. Can I customise my tour package?
We appreciate that our customers have travel wishlists when they come to Norway, so we use our local knowledge to add in as many must-see attractions and hidden gem recommendations as we can into our packages. However, should you have any requests, we will do our best to arrange this for you!
You can add on days at either end of your trip to have more time to explore, or, if you have a particular activity or place in mind, please discuss it with your travel consultant who will try to build it into your itinerary.
2. When should I organise my flight tickets?
We advise that you book your package first to secure your tour and your preferred dates. It is useful to check potential flight times and prices, but be aware some airlines and flight booking websites raise their prices between visits, so remember to do research using Private or Incognito mode.
Once we confirm your tour by email, purchase your flights to make it all official. If you have missed out on flights, please get in touch with us to change your tour dates.
3. What causes the aurora borealis?
Norse Vikings believed that the northern lights were reflections of heavenly Valkyrie armour. Nowadays there’s a scientific explanation for them, of course.
Auroras appear when the sun blasts charged particles towards our planet. The particles collide with atoms in our upper atmosphere, which create bursts of glowing light. The movement, shapes, brightness and colours depend on the type of atoms involved as well as the pull of Earth’s magnetic forces and the intensity of the solar flares.
4. Where is the best place in Norway to view northern lights?
The best places to see the northern lights in Norway are inside the Arctic Circle, including Tromsø, Kirkenes and the Lofoten islands. Your chances increase depending when you visit, solar activity and your distance from city light pollution.
For a detailed guide on when and where to go, read our blog on the best places to see the northern lights in Norway .
5. When is the best time to see aurora borealis in Norway?
In Norway your chances of seeing the northern lights are greatest between September and April, with October through March being the best months.
To see the lights clearly you need a dark night sky, which means the summer months are largely ruled out. During this season, the sun may not set at all in northern areas of Norway due to a phenomenon called the midnight sun .
Peak time for seeing the northern lights is between 11pm and 2am, so make sure to stay up late! Northern lights ‘hunting’ tours will often leave late to ensure you have the best chances. If you’d rather stay warm in bed, some hotels in the countryside may offer a special "wake up" call if the lights come out.
6. Can you see the northern lights in May, June, July or August?
Sightings of the northern lights during the late spring and summer months are very rare. The reason for this is that while aurora activity is year round, the nights are not dark enough to view them clearly. We want you to have the best opportunity of seeing them in all their glory, so we recommend visiting in winter to increase your chances.
7. What months are the northern lights visible in Norway?
The lights at their most vivid during the months of:

8. What’s my best chance to see the northern lights?
By visiting Norway, you’ve already boosted your chances of witnessing the northern lights exponentially, as the closer you are to the Arctic Circle, the clearer the lights appear.
If you want to be in the middle of the northern lights’ famous show, then head north to further increase your chances! We also recommend getting away from the light pollution of cities and towns. When you’re hunting the aurora on one of our northern lights trips, remember to stay up late as the darker the night, the clearer the lights. Be patient and wait for this natural phenomenon to surprise you!
9. What to wear to see the northern lights?
Winter is the prime aurora-viewing season, with this in mind we recommend that you wrap up when searching for the northern lights. Bring and wear plenty of woolly layers and remember to have on gloves, hats and thick socks. In between viewing locations, keep warm in the brisk weather by taking a flask of a tasty hot drink with you.
Here's a quick list of the basics:
- Hat, gloves, scarf
- Thermal coat
- Insulated undergarments or long johns
- Sensible walking shoes or boots
- Woollen jumpers or fleeces

10. How best to photograph northern lights?
We know that you’ll bring home amazing memories, but bringing home photos of the mesmerising (and elusive) northern lights would be the cherry on top to show all your friends and family. Here are our top photography tips for capturing the aurora:
- Bring a DSLR camera with manual focus and, if possible, a tripod and a remote trigger to avoid blurred images
- Pack extra batteries as freezing temperatures can deplete battery levels quickly
- Wear a headlamp or bring along a flashlight to see what you’re doing, even in the dark
- Turn off image stabilisation as when the lights move it can cause blurriness
