Vantage Travel Debuts New Luxury Expedition Small Ship, Ocean Odyssey

BOSTON, November 21, 2022  –  Vantage Deluxe World Travel , a world-renowned deluxe cruising tour operator, is proud to debut the new five-star  Ocean Odyssey premier small ship, built for global luxury expedition travel. The ship’s inaugural cruise departed Aqaba, Jordan on course around the Arabian Peninsula bound for Dubai, UAE, on November 20.  Ocean Odyssey  and its sister ship  Ocean Explorer  will navigate worldwide with 48 itineraries that will bring travelers to all seven continents.

In 2023,  Ocean Odyssey  will operate small ship discovery ocean cruises in Asia, the British Isles, the Mediterranean and Scandinavia, with plans to add Morocco, the Canary Islands and expedition cruising in Iceland in 2024.

Ocean Odyssey  offers multiple stateroom and suite options comfortable for solo travelers, couples and families. With a guest capacity of just 134, the ship has 77 spacious, all outside-facing cabins including suites with walk-out balconies and 15 solo cabins — a cruise industry first. The ship also has 30 cabins that can accommodate up to three guests for family and group experiences. Vantage offers free single supplements as well as free roommate-matching services if guests would like to be paired while traveling.

Those onboard will experience true luxury with a breadth of amenities including fine dining options, three bars, various lounges and an intimate dining space for groups and special events. Travelers can relax in the ship’s spa, sauna and hot tubs or work out in the state-of-the-art fitness center. A well-stocked library, complimentary unlimited Wi-Fi, 20+ live TV channels and video-on-demand are also available to guests. The ship’s observation deck hosts a curated variety of programming including lectures, programs, musical performances and cultural events. The ship’s low passenger-to-crew ratio ensures guest satisfaction, and Vantage’s onboard Concierge caters to guests’ every need, both before and during the cruise.

I reserved this cruise in June 2022. I am a single traveler and do not have many cruise options because of that. I traveled with Vantage 3 times before - all trips were the river cruises and all of them were wonderful. Unfortunately, this trip was not that good. I had a singe balcony cabin. The cabin was overheated. The air conditioner setting was set on max cooling and the fan was set on max speed. Still the room was very hot during the day and only cooled down a little bit at night.

The ship is new and has a nice design. However, the open pool on the top has design issues and could not be filled with water. It stands empty and could not be fixed. The top deck is open and does not have any tents or umbrellas. So in a southern cruise like the one I was from Singapore to Mumbai you can't use it, even though they have nice outdoor furniture there: it's too hot without having any shade!

Cabin Review

The cabin was overheated. The air conditioner setting was set on max cooling and the fan was set on max speed. Still the room was very hot during the day and only cooled down a little bit at night.

Cabin service was done twice a day.

The cabin was small, but it was well organized.

The intimately scaled Ocean Odyssey' accommodates up to 162 guests with 77 cabins including 15 solo cabins. The design solutions lead to breathtaking views. Although moderate in size, the vessel holds a restaurant, a space for lectures, a lounge, a multilevel observation lounge with a 180-degree indoor observation deck, outdoor viewing areas, a fitness centre and beauty salon, a raised infinity pool and hot tubs, sauna and spa.

Ship history

The expedition cruise ship is built to the ice-strengthened, Polar Class 6 standards and comes with the ULSTEIN X-BOW® technology, allowing for smoother sailing and deeper exploration into polar areas, enhancing the passengers' and crews' comfort as the vessel traverses the world?s seas. It comes with environmentally friendly standards with reduced emissions into air and sea and lower energy consumption and runs on low-sulphur marine gas oil.

The flexible design of the INFINITY class series opens up new possibilities for every new vessel. The 'Ocean Odyssey' marks Vantage Cruise Line 's second entry into luxury expedition cruising, this being the sister ship to the 2021 delivery, the ' Ocean Explorer '. A novelty for these two vessels is the unique entrance atrium on decks 4 and 5. Another feature, and very characteristic of these two vessels, is the atrium forward consisting of a two-level lounge with a piano bar and panoramic bow windows.

Vantage Travel Cruise Line charters Ocean Odyssey in 2022

The Boston MA -based premium river cruise brand Vantage Travel announced that its new 162-passenger Ocean Odyssey ship is scheduled for launch in March 2022.

After the introduction of sistership Ocean Explorer in 2021, the newbuild (currently under construction) Ocean Odyssey will mark a major milestone in the company's 36-year history by bringing travellers to all the seven continents and new for Vantage Travel destinations, such as the Pacific Ocean's Coral Triangle (Indonesia, Malaysia, PNG, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste), Komodo Island , Borneo Island (world's 3rd-largest), northern Australia.

MS Ocean Odyssey is an ice-strengthened (polar class 1A / PC6) expedition cruise ship owned by SunStone Ships (USA) and to be operated under charter by Vantage Travel.

Ocean Odyssey is the fourth in a series of ten "Ulstein CX103" design (Infinity-Class) expedition vessels, with sisterships  Greg Mortimer  (2019-Aug),  Ocean Victory  (2020-Sept),  Ocean Explorer  (2021-Feb),  Sylvia Earle  (2021-Oct),  Ocean Discoverer  (2022-Sept),  Ocean Albatros  (2022-Oct) plus 4 more (TBN) units. The patented ULSTEIN X-BOW design is one of the unusual for expedition ship features, The vessel also utilizes the latest technologies in naval engineering. The ship is technically managed by Cruise Management International ( Miami -based passenger vessel/fleet management company). CMI Leisure Miami handles hotel operations.

The expedition vessel features dedicated outdoor observation areas (including fore-located Observation Deck with two Hydraulic Platforms and two Viewing Platforms), stern marina (watersports platform serving company's sea kayaking, snorkelling, and scuba diving programs), a fleet of 20x Zodiacs (large-capacity motorized boats used for passenger transportation - tendering and landings). The aft-located Zodiac loading platform is a new design and allows easier and faster boarding. Sun Deck (top-deck forward) is furnished with premium garden furniture (sofas, armchairs, sun loungers) and used for both relaxation and wildlife viewing. The top-deck bow is the Observation Lounge (served by its own Bar) and midship is the funnel (with four stacks/engine exhaust pipes).

Other facilities include Medical Centre (Infirmary), Change Room (Mudroom), Bar Lounge (lecture theater forward on Deck 5), Dining Room Restaurant, Ship Shop, Lobby area (Reception Desk), Library, Art Room, Wellness Centre (Fitness, Spa, Sauna Room, Treatment Rooms for Massages), Lower Sun Deck (Deck 7 aft, with lifeboats and liferafts), Upper Sun Deck (Deck 8 midship, with sunbathing area and two whirlpool hot tubs). Four Zodiac Docks (2 on each side, hull access at sea-level) serve as boat launching platforms.

MS Ocean Odyssey has 10 decks and offers 15x single-occupancy cabins (out of total 80 staterooms) .

OCEAN EXPLORER and OCEAN ODYSSEY

Cruise SunStone Maritime Group announced the reactivation of two Infinity Class Expedition vessels with multi-year charters signed for the OCEAN EXPLORER and the OCEAN ODYSSEY. The OCEAN EXPLORER will return to polar cruising in October 2024, when Quark Expeditions, a long-term client of SunStone, adds the vessel to its fleet of expedition vessels. The OCEAN ODYSSEY will operate outside the cruise market.

In October 2024, the Quark charter of the OCEAN ADVENTURER ends, after which time this vessel will be available for sale or charter.   

About the Infinity Class

In addition to Ice Class 1A and Polar Class 6, the vessels feature zero-speed stabilization, virtual anchoring, and Safe Return to Port. The Infinity vessels, having a capacity of up to 95 passenger cabins, most with balconies, promise an immersive and comfortable experience for travellers. The ships house a range of amenities, including restaurants, lecture space, lounges, a 180-degree indoor observation deck, outdoor viewing areas, a gym, sauna, spa, and a custom-designed platform catering to kayakers and divers.

Zodiac excursions are supported through four sea-level loading platforms and a mud room, ensuring seamless operations for off-board activities.

Ocean Odyssey Celebrates First Anniversary

After being delivered to SunStone Ships October 2022 , the Ocean Odyssey recently celebrated its first anniversary.

Built at the China Merchants Heavy Industries Shipyard in Haimen, China, the 120-guest vessel was initially operated by Vantage Deluxe World Travel as part of a long-term charter agreement.

Sailing along its sister ship Ocean Explorer, the Odyssey offered a series of cruises in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the Mediterranean during its maiden season.

The program, however, was cut short last May when Vantage abruptly ceased its operations . With financial issues, the company sent its ships to an extended layup in Caen, France.

Vantage later filed for bankruptcy before having some of its assets bought by Aurora Expeditions. The Ocean Odyssey, however, wasn’t included in the deal.

Still docked in Caen, the ship is now looking for a new operator. According to SunStone Ships’ website, the 8,000-ton vessel is available for charter or sale with prompt delivery.

Purpose-built for expedition cruising in remote and polar areas, the Ocean Odyssey was designed in partnership with Ulstein and offers several unique features, including a PC6 Ice Class and an X-Bow.

The structural feat is said to improve the ship’s efficiency and stability, allowing it to cruise more comfortably even in rough weather.

The Ocean Odyssey is also equipped with a system of zero-speed stabilizer, which can keep the vessel stable at sea and also at anchor.

Among its hotel facilities is a main dining room with 144 seats, a specialty restaurant with 36 seats and a secondary restaurant with 44 seats.

The 105-meter-long ship also offers a large two-deck atrium with floor-to-ceiling windows and a presentation lounge for 160 guests.

Other features include an observation lounge, a library, a lido deck with an infinity pool, an outside bar and two jacuzzies, a dedicated mudroom, a gift shop, a gym, a medical center, and more.
