Get to know Spain
A global benchmark in a variety of areas, Spain is one of the world's main tourist destinations. In this field, it is worth mentioning that our country is the second-ranked country in the world in terms of World Heritage Cities, the third-ranked in terms of natural spaces declared to be Biosphere Reserves and the country with the most Blue Flag beaches in the northern hemisphere.
Spain also has an excellent academic offer, with an extensive network of universities and some of the most prestigious business schools in the world. Our country is also the largest recipient of exchange students under the Erasmus Programme. Taking into account that Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world, Spain is a key destination in terms of its education offer.
Residing in Spain
Foreign citizens that wish to reside in Spain must have received prior authorisation to this end. Once this authorisation has been obtained, the corresponding visa is required to grant entry into Spain. Residency in Spain may be on a temporary or a permanent basis.
Temporary residency is the situation that authorises a stay in Spain for a period of more than 90 days and less than five years. Authorisations for a duration of less than five years may be periodically renewed, following an application by the interested party, if the circumstances are met to grant said application. The initial authorisation for temporary residency without a work authorisation will only be granted to foreigners that can substantiate sufficient economic means to this end and, as the case may be, to their family.
Long-term residency is the situation that authorises indefinite residency and a work permit in Spain, under the same conditions as for Spanish citizens. Foreign citizens that have had temporary residency in Spain for five years continuously and that meet the conditions established at law will be entitled to long-term residency. For the purposes of obtaining long-term residency, previous and continuous periods of residency in other Member States as holders of the European Union blue card will be calculated to this end.
Studying in Spain
Foreign citizens that wish to stay in Spain to study at school or extend their education, perform research or training activities, non-remunerated work experience, take part in student exchange programmes or carry out voluntary services must obtain the corresponding visa, which will include the initial authorisation to stay in Spain. One of the most important requirements for obtaining a study visa is to have a letter of admission from the school or university where the education programme will be studied.
When the duration of the authorised stay exceeds six months, foreign citizens that are holders of a visa to study at school or extend their education, perform research or training activities, non-remunerated work experience, take part in student exchange programmes or carry out voluntary services must apply, within the period of one month from their arrival in Spain, for a foreign student card from the corresponding Immigration Office or Police Station.
Working in Spain
Foreign citizens that intend to carry on any remunerated, employment or professional activity must meet the following requirements:
be older than 16 (unless the employment activity is on a self-employment basis, in which case they must be older than 18);
previously obtain the corresponding authorisation to reside and work in Spain (this authorisation must be applied for by the employer offering the work contract):
and obtain a visa once the residency and work authorisation has been issued.
Upon their arrival in Spain, foreign workers must register under the corresponding Social Security Regime and apply for a foreigner's identity card. European Union citizens and their families, provided that the latter travel or meet with the former are registered under a specific legal regime based on the rights recognised in the EU Treaties.

www.spain.info – Spain’s official tourism website
www.spain.info is the main online platform for the international promotion of Spain as a tourist destination. Spain’s official tourism portal is managed by Segittur under the direction of Turespaña, which has owned and been responsible for the site since its creation in 2003.
Segittur’s main tasks in managing this website include design, development, updating, translation, analytics, content creation, technological support and evolution, market research, user analysis, and SEO and SEM optimisation.
There are nine international versions of the website promoting our country around the world, in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
The new version of www.spain.info, published in July 2020, introduces a dynamic new design with heightened visual impact and content that inspires tourists by taking advantage of new digital trends. This new updated portal is also fully integrated with Turespaña’s strategic marketing plan, being focused 100% on the consumer and on the segmentation and customisation of the phases of the customer journey (dreaming, discovering and planning).
The main objectives here are to make a positive contribution to the tourism sector, presenting Spain as a safe and sustainable destination using content tailored to the cosmopolitan tourist who has greater spending power, and improving the image of our country’s tourism brand.
The aim is also to deseasonalise demand by offering different ideas and options, and encouraging geographical diversification. Content is focused on products other than classic beach holidays, including options such as cultural, nature, and shopping tourism, and seeks new users from non-traditional feeder markets.
The new features of www.spain.info include:
- Inspirational content and an improved user experience in terms of navigation and usability
- Implementation of the mobile-first approach
- New features that help tourists to plan and organise their trips
- Integration of social media to enable content sharing
- Optimisation of technological developments to improve SEO
What does www.spain.info offer tourists?
Spain’s official tourism portal is a tool for inspiring potential international tourists and helping them to plan their trip. With a visual approach to content, it also provides a solid base of useful information. Additionally, it makes it easy to book activities and experiences to enjoy at the destination.
What does www.spain.info offer tourism companies?
Through www.spain.info, private companies can benefit from the incorporation of a channel for the promotion and sale of tourism activities and experiences.
The website in numbers
- More than 15,000,000 pages viewed per year by potential tourists.
- 11 languages promoting Spain online as a tourist destination.
- 5 full international versions in Spanish, German, French, English, and Italian.
- 4 versions mostly translated into Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, and Russian.

Córdoba , capital of Muslim Spain, is the main city in a territory located in the centre of Andalusia. The Guadalquivir river, at its wider middle course, crosses this province from east to west and provides irrigation for a wide plain where cereals, grapevines and olive trees grow.
Towards the north, the landscape becomes progressively wilder until it reaches the summits of the Sierra Morena , with dense forests and abundant wild game for hunting.
In the south, the land rises gradually until it reaches the mountains of the Subbética range. These lands with their limestone soils feature spreading olive groves and white villages and noble towns with well-conserved Baroque architecture.
This mountainous landscape is home to a varied fauna. The province of Córdoba, which still bears traces of its Iberian, Roman and Muslim past, is rich in traditions ; it has an outstanding architectural heritage, and its gastronomy has undergone a considerable resurgence with the revival of a range of dishes from the traditional cooking of the region.
The province of Cordoba is located in the north centre of the Autonomous Region of Andalusia . It borders the provinces of Malaga , Seville , Badajoz , Ciudad Real , Jaén , and Granada .
The capital city is Cordoba .
Since Palaeolithic times, the province of Cordoba has been marked by the hand of man. The Tartessians and Oretani people fought over these lands and the exploitation of its iron, lead and copper mines.
The Romans conquered it, and were fascinated by its beautiful landscapes and the fertile valley. Numerous constructions throughout the province stand as witness to their presence. After the Muslim expansion across the Iberian peninsula, the territory of the Al-Andalus empire in Cordoba became a major hub for the export of cultural and economic ideas in medieval Europe .
With the independent Emirate established by Abderramán I and the Omeya caliphate of Abderramán III, Cordoba reached the pinnacle of its historical prominence. The teachings of great men –Seneca, Maimonides, Averroes...– spread the splendour and influence of Cordoba all over the world.
After the Christian conquest, the repopulations of the valley of the Guadalquivir by Charles III of Spain and the social unrest in the 19th century, the province changed course towards a new historical destination. Today this privileged enclave in Andalusia is home to a priceless architectural heritage , which will captivate the most demanding traveller.
The land in the province of Cordoba spreads between olive groves and grapevines and is bathed by the tributaries of the Guadalquivir river which runs through it from one side to the other and separates it in two: the mountain area of Sierra Morena and the flat countryside of the Guadalquivir. To the south there is another area which is not as extensive, but higher: the Subbética mountain ranges.

'Go home': Overtourism sparks backlash in Spain
A nti-tourism movements are multiplying in Spain, the world's second most visited country, prompting authorities to try and reconcile the interests of locals and the lucrative sector.
Rallying under the slogan "The Canaries have a limit", a collective of groups on the archipelago off northwest Africa are planning a slew of protests on Saturday.
The Canaries are known for volcanic landscapes and year-round sunshine and attracts millions of visitors from all over the world.
Groups there want authorities to halt work on two new hotels on Tenerife, the largest and most developed of the archipelago's seven islands.
They are also demanding that locals be given a greater say in the face of what they consider uncontrolled development which is harming the environment.
Several members of the collective "Canaries Sold Out" also began an "indefinite" hunger strike last week to put pressure of the authorities.
"Our islands are a treasure that must be defended," the collective said.
The Canaries received 16 million visitors last year, more than seven times its population of around 2.2 million people.
This is an unsustainable level given the archipelago's limited resources, Victor Martin, a spokesman for the collective told a recent press briefing, calling it a "suicidal growth model".
- 'Social revulsion' -
Similar anti-tourism movements have sprung up elsewhere in Spain and are active on social media.
In the southern port of Malaga on the Costa del Sol, a centre of Spain's decades-old "soy y playa" or "sun and beach" tourism model, stickers with unfriendly slogans such as "This used to be my home" and "Go home" have appeared on the walls and doors of tourist accommodations.
In Barcelona and the Balearic Islands, activists have put up fake signs at the entrances to some popular beaches warning in English of the risk of "falling rocks" or "dangerous jellyfish".
Locals complain a rise in accommodation listings on short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb have worsened a housing shortage and caused rents to soar, especially in town centres.
The influx of tourists also adds to noise and environmental pollution and taxes resources such as water, they add.
In the northeastern region of Catalonia, which declared a drought emergency in February, anger is growing over the pressure exerted on depleted water reserves by hotels on the Costa Brava.
"Our concern is to continue to grow tourism in Spain so that it is sustainable and does not generate social revulsion," the vice president of tourism association Exceltur, Jose Luis Zoreda, told a news conference on Tuesday when asked about the protest movements.
The group said it expects Spain's tourism sector will post record revenues of 202.65 billion euros ($215.4 billion) this year.
- Loudspeaker ban -
Before the Covid-19 pandemic brought the global travel industry to its knees in 2020, protest movements against overtourism had already emerged in Spain, especially in Barcelona.
Now that pandemic travel restrictions have been lifted, tourism is back with a vengeance -- Spain welcomed a record 85.1 million foreign visitors last year.
In response, several cities have taken measures to try to limit overcrowding.
The northern seaside city of San Sebastian last month limited the size of tourist groups in the centre to 25 people and banned the use of loudspeakers during guided tours.
The southern city of Seville is mulling charging non-residents a fee to enter its landmark Plaza de Espana while Barcelona had removed a bus route popular with tourists from Google Maps to try to make more room for locals.
Housing Minister Isabel Rodriguez said over the weekend that "action needs to be taken to limit the number of tourist flats" but stressed the government is "aware of the importance of the tourist sector", which accounts for 12.8 percent of Spain's economic activity.
