Ohio Scenic Train Rides (2024): A Complete Guide

Ohio scenic train rides are prolific and many!  If museums are more your thing several can also be found across the state.    There are currently nearly a dozen tourist railroad attractions within the Buckeye State.  These include:

• Cedar Point & Lake Erie Railroad (a component of the Cedar Point amusement park)
• Hocking Valley Scenic Railway (the only place to ride behind a historic, standard-gauge steam locomotive!)
• Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad
• Lorain & West Virginia Railway
• Toledo, Lake Erie & Western Railway & Museum
• Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

Such a far-reaching selection can be attributed to Ohio's location and industrial might in bygone days.  

With a peak mileage of 9,002 in 1920 (from the book, " The Routledge Historical Atlas Of The American Railroads " by author John F. Stover), only Illinois and Pennsylvania contained more trackage among Eastern/Midwestern states. 

Within its borders could be found four major trunk lines (Erie, Baltimore & Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York Central), other important corridors linking important centers of commerce (such as Cleveland, Youngstown, Toledo, Akron, Columbus, and Cincinnati), and a multitude of branch lines serving agricultural and coal interests.  

The information presented here highlights  only  the state's excursions and museums.

State Rail History

As railroads transitioned from entities serving local interests to a unified, national network, Ohio was poised to flourish.  Chicago blossomed into an epicenter where railroads from the north, south, east, and west all converged and interchanged. 

With most business flowing east-to-west, Ohio's mileage grew prodigiously during the 19th century.  According to an in-depth analysis  Trains Magazine  published in its January, 2007 issue entitled, " Great Railroading: State-By-State ," its first railroad was the Mad River & Lake Erie (MR&LE) chartered in 1835 to connect the Lake Erie port of Sandusky with Springfield. 

It is also recognized as the first chartered west of the Allegheny Mountains.  Construction began from Sandusky on September 17, 1835; on hand for this event was General William Henry Harrison (who went on to become the 9th president of the United States in 1841) and Ohio governor Joseph Vance. 

Thanks to the area's relatively flat topography, work proceeded quickly; in 1839 tracklayers arrived at Republic and then Tiffin by 1842. 

Its initial southern terminus of Springfield was reached in June, 1849, a distance of 134.5 miles at a cost $1.754 million.  In the following years the MR&LE continued to grow, extending to Dayton and Findlay by the early 1850's. 

In 1858, however, the road abandoned its original alignment between Sandusky and Tiffin in favor of a better route built by the Sandusky City & Indiana Railroad via Clyde, Ohio.

During the next several decades the railroad changed hands and names multiple times. 

The 19th century's mega-merger movement witnessed the East's four principle trunk lines coming together, a time which saw the MR&LE folded into the much larger Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway on November 1, 1890. 

Better known as the " Big Four ," the CCC&StL has its own long, and fascinating, history.  It was created on June 30, 1889 when the New York Central & Hudson River merged three predecessors into one. 

Into the 20th century, Ohio not only contained key through routes but was also an industrial powerhouse; Youngstown produced steel, Akron manufactured rubber, and Toledo was the so-called "Glass Capital Of The World." 

Places like Cincinnati, Columbus, and even Canton were also major manufacturing centers. 

Finally, the ports of Ashtabula, Lorain, Cleveland, and Sandusky handled millions of tons of iron ore from Minnesota that went into the production of steel while southern Ohio contained many coal mines. 

The state's economy was so strong that many fondly remembered railroads served it in some fashion, names like:

• Baltimore & Ohio 
• Pennsylvania
• New York Central
• Norfolk & Western
• Chesapeake & Ohio
• Akron, Canton & Youngstown
• Wheeling & Lake Erie
• Nickel Plate Road (New York, Chicago & St. Louis)

Alas, following World War II, the state's heavy industry began a long decline as these businesses closed or were outsourced overseas. 

In 1965, its total mileage had dropped to 8,131 and following railroading's dark decade of the 1970's, in which many carriers went bankrupt, mass abandonments were carried out. 

By 1995 Ohio contained just 5,123 miles, a number which has more or less remained steady since that time.  Today, the venerable names of yore are all gone, wiped away for the reasons mentioned above.

The state is currently served by Class I's CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern while numerous short lines make up the rest.

Its tourist railroad industry aims to preserve its rich history; most offer rides lasting more than an hour, allowing guests to view rolling farm country and breathtaking national parks. 

Thanks to its location within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and proximity to the Cleveland metro region, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is the most popular. 

It witnesses tens of thousands of visitors annually, offering all sorts of special trips throughout the year.

• Age Of Steam Roundhouse

One of Ohio's most unique and fascinating railroad attractions is this facility located in Sugarcreek, which has only been in operation since 2011! 

It was built by the late Jerry Jacobson, a professional railroader who also loved trains.   

It is a fully functional and operational roundhouse that acts as a locomotive/car repair operation.  However, following his death the organization now offers public tours. 

There, you can see nearly two-dozen restored or preserved steam locomotives!  Anyone with an interest in trains will love this place.  To learn more please  visit their website .

• Bradford Railroad Museum

Located in the town of Bradford this museum's focus is local railroad history.  Their focal point is an original, preserved Pennsylvania Railroad interlocking tower (BF), which is available for tours on select dates. 

Sadly, the PRR's once prolific presence in this small town is no more; both its main line to Chicago and connector to the busy "Panhandle Route" are both abandoned today.

• Carillon Park Rail & Steam Society

The Carillon Park Rail & Steam Society, based in Dayton, has a small selection of rolling stock on hand and also provides scale train rides on select days throughout the year.

• Cedar Point & Lake Erie Railroad

The Cedar Point & Lake Erie Railroad is an excursion train built for the popular theme park in Cedar Point in the 1960s. Today, it operates several steam locomotives (all historic and well worth the visit for any rail aficionado!) on a short stretch of narrow-gauge (36-inch) track that traverses the park's grounds.

• Conneaut Historical Railroad Museum

This organization began in 1964 as a non-profit to preserve local railroad history.  They are housed within the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern (New York Central) brick depot built in 1900.  They have seasonal hours from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Ohio's most popular scenic train ride is the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad thanks to its location to Cleveland and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  

It uses tracks once owned by the Baltimore & Ohio and while the railroad does not maintain steam locomotives it does field a fleet of historic streamlined diesels built by the Montreal Locomotive Works (a division of American Locomotive). 

Throughout the year they host special events (such as the popular  Day Out With Thomas  and holiday festivities such as during Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).

• Dennison Railroad Depot Museum

The Dennison Railroad Depot Museum, based in Dennison, is open most of the year.  It is housed inside the restored 1873 Pennsylvania Railroad depot and offers a wide range of static displays and rolling stock.  In addition, be sure to dine at their restaurant.  The organization also provides official  Polar Express  rides in December.

• Entertainment Junction

This tourist attraction is based in West Chester and claims to have the largest indoor display of G-scale model trains anywhere in the world.  To learn more please visit their website.

• Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is located in Nelsonville, Ohio and operates a former Chesapeake & Ohio branch to Athens.

The HVSR now offers the only place in Ohio were one can enjoy train rides behind a historic, standard-gauge steam locomotive.  This 0-6-0 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1920 and spent much of its career for Ohio Power.

• Jefferson Depot Village

This attraction is located in Jefferson.  Its stated purpose is to highlight what life was like in Ohio and the Midwest during the 19th century. 

It is a living history museum with fourteen historic buildings on hand.  One is a preserved 1872 depot originally built by the Cleveland, Painesville & Ashtabula Railroad (later acquired by the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern, a future component of the New York Central). 

The Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad based in Lebanon, Ohio operates on trackage once owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Trains board from Lebanon for about a 1.5-hour trip while the railroad also offers numerous seasonal and special trains throughout the year. 

The Lorain & West Virginia Railway based in Wellington, Ohio operates on trackage originally built by the railroad of the same name. Currently they have about 6 miles of track open for service but plan to restore the entire line between Wellington and Elyria operating both freight and passenger trains.

• Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum

This museum is based in Bellevue and takes part of its name from the railroad which originally served the town, the Mad River & Lake Erie. 

This road would abandon its original alignment through Bellevue in early 1858 for a better grade running via nearby Clyde. 

Bellevue would later become an important point along the New York, Chicago & St. Louis (Nickel Plate Road), which became the location of a major yard and shop facilities.  Today, the museum houses several artifacts and displays.

• Marion Union Station Association

As the name suggests this is the town of Marion's preserved union station, which is surrounded by active main lines.  The facility, which includes a preserved Erie Lackawanna caboose, has select times available for tours.  To learn more about visiting the location please call them at 740-383-3768.

• Northern Ohio Railway Museum

This organization is located in Seville and primarily focuses on a local and national interurban history.

It owns 2 miles of the former Cleveland, Southwestern & Columbus Railway's right-of-way, a traction system that once served its home area.  

They have a large collection of preserved streetcar/interurban equipment on hand and a small carbarn to house the cars.  The museum is open from late May through October. 

• Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation, Inc.

The NORP is based in Findlay offering quarter-scale train rides to the public along with a small museum, gift shop, and layouts to view.

• Ohio Railway Museum

The Ohio Railway Museum, based in Worthington, offers visitors the chance to peruse historic rolling stock while also offering short scenic train rides.  The organization operates these trips on Sunday afternoons only.

• Orrville Railroad Heritage Society

This non-profit group is located in Orrville and generally aims to preserve Ohio's rich history with railroads. They have a few pieces of rolling stock on hand including GP7 #471 which hosts excursions.  To learn more please visit their website.

• Toledo, Lake Erie and Western Railway & Museum

The Toledo, Lake Erie & Western Railway & Museum is based in Waterville, Ohio.  The organization hosts a 15-mile round trip on trackage once owned by the "Nickel Plate Road." Their train is known as the  Bluebird Passenger Train  and normally operates between May and November.

• Warther Carving Museum

The Warther Museum, located in Dover, Ohio, features very likely the most detailed and well-constructed train carvings you can find throughout the world.

Not only are the carvings superbly well crafted but they are also built of rare natural materials such as ivory and ebony. Perhaps most amazing is these models are mechanically operable and just static display pieces. 

The collection is a must-see; you will certainly not be disappointed by a visit to Dover, Ohio.

The Warther Museum is entirely self-funded and family operated, The organization currently houses all but a few of Mr. Warther's original pieces; the others' locations are all accounted for and perhaps one day will return to the museum.  

Ernest Warther was a self-taught man who had an education no better than elementary level. However, his love of trains and interest in carving allowed him to create works of art that are, astonishingly, considered priceless by the Smithsonian Institution.  

Never one who particularly loved diesel locomotives or streamlined steamers, Mooney typically stuck to carving "traditional" steam locomotives where all of the parts and pistons could easily be seen (he did carve one diesel and one streamlined steam locomotive).

Mr. Warther also carved other scenes such as a working steel mill, ornate canes, and a tree of folding pliers made from one, solid piece of wood.

-  Known simply enough as the Pliers Tree. This unique carving is actually entirely interlocking featuring 511 pairs of pliers and can fold into itself, thus forming one giant pair of pliers. -

By the 1920s Mooney's artistic talent had become so well known he was given the title of, " World's Master Carver ."   As good as the man was, he turned down hundreds of thousands of dollars for his carvings, claiming they were only a hobby not meant as a business.

However, he did carry out a promotional tour of his carvings when the New York Central Railroad featured some of his pieces on board a special train.  Mr. Warther had several quotes he is remembered for, some of which are now quite famous. Here are a few:

" Start right where you are and act as if no one is trying to hinder you. "

" Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today. "

" There is more wasted energy spent getting angry then there is in fixing what broke. "

" Everything has its own rhythm or tempo that is in step with nature and if you can find the tempo of the task at hand, the work becomes effortless. "

What eventually did become a successful business for was the sale of his very own brand of cutlery that can still purchase today in the museum's gift shop.

Mooney never used manufactured knives to do carvings, stating they were simply too clumsy and awkward. Instead, he developed his own style of carving knife, although he never manufactured it for sale.

Generally, these one-of-a-kind carving knives feature very short blades, most just a thumb-size in length, and can be easily interchanged to save time and energy.  

The world of Ernest and Freida Warther has grown over the years. Today, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation Warther's operate the Warther Museum, knife making shop, button collection, arrowheads, gardens and the gift shop.

While Ernest "Mooney" Warther never made millions from his priceless carvings he lived a very enjoyable life spending plenty of time with friends and family when not in the workshop.

While the great carver passed away many years ago, his legacy and carvings live on at his home and property in Dover.

Ohio Rail Experience

A part of the Cincinnati Scenic Railway, a non-profit organization, the Ohio Rail Experience offers train excursions operated in partnership with the Cincinnati Railway Company, Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad, and local historical societies. The trips along the railway offer a chance to experience rail’s golden age in a family-friendly, casual atmosphere. Passengers aboard the Ohio Rail Experience trains ride in vintage rail cars that are pulled by historic diesel electric locomotives and featuring open window coaches dating back to the 1930’s. New tour schedules take place every year, with several trips not repeated from year to year.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

Hop aboard! The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad travels through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park year-round and offers beautiful views and fun for the whole family.

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

Head out to East Logan, take the noon train to Haydenville, experience a holiday excursion, or take a ride on a train destined to be robbed by the friendliest robbers in the area!

This historic train is operated by a crew of volunteers and travels through the Hocking Valley area with an approximately 2-hour ride on weekends between Memorial Day and the end of October. Offering an authentic and historic train experience, travelers can enjoy one of their open-air cars or ride in one of the enclosed cars which are both air-conditioned and heated.

Be sure to arrive 30-45 minutes in advance of your scheduled departure time and tickets can be purchased online, by phone, or at the Nelsonville Depot. You can bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages but be cautioned that the historic train does not include restrooms. Ride and ticket details can be found on their website or call to have your questions answered before you book.

Cincinnati Dinner Train

The Cincinnati Dinner Train describes their 3-hour dinner experience as “Dining with a side of Scenery!” The 1940s-themed train travels 25 miles (round trip) to the Cincinnati Riverfront and is equipped with several restored railcars prepared to serve you and your friends a delicious four-course dinner with period entertainment.

Visit their website for menu information (including vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements), business-casual dress code, reservation details, and a very helpful list of frequently asked questions. You’ll also find great photos of the train cars and the history of each.

This excursion is best for older children and adults, as children under 12 are not permitted. Special events, group, and private excursions are also available with advance reservations.

Zanesville & Western Scenic Railroad 

Also known as the Mt. Perry Scenic Train, the Zanesville & Western Railroad travels the historic “Glass Rock Spur” rail line in southeastern Ohio and offers weekend rides from July through October. You can ride in a traditional enclosed coach car or choose their gondola car for an open-air experience.

The scenic train offers several themed excursions including a Hobo Camp, Pumpkin Train, Santa Train, Grassman Weekend, and a weekend for Scouts where kids receive a free ride when wearing their scout uniform. Groups and themed parties are welcome. Call for details for special events.

Ohio Railway Museum 

As one of the oldest railroad museums in the country, the Ohio Railway Museum has made its mission to educate visitors by offering “a taste of what this country was like when rail travel was part of everyday life.”

The museum exhibits include steam, electric, and diesel trains, streetcars, and rare and hard-to-find interurbans. You’ll also find artifacts of unique items representing the culture and technology of railroading.

Unlimited demonstration train, streetcar, and Pullman passenger car rides are included with admission for the day of your visit, rain or shine. Children under 3 are FREE. Only open on Sundays!

Lebanon Mason & Monroe Railroad 

Operated by the Cincinnati Scenic Railway, the Lebanon Mason and Monroe Railroad offers family-friendly train rides that “put history into motion.” 

In addition to beautifully restored train cars, you’ll find a unique list of themed rides, including opportunities to ride on the Princess Express (kids are encouraged to dress as their favorite princess) or ride to the pumpkin patch! If you’re looking for an evening without the kids, they also offer wine and cheese, pizza and beer, Murder Mystery, and other themed excursions.

Running most weekends and select weekdays year-round, you’ll want to purchase your tickets in advance through either their online event pages or by phone to be guaranteed a seat. All of their passenger cars are heated, some air-conditioned, and others have open windows, so be sure to dress for the weather.

Their website offers their schedule, a helpful FAQ section, and details on all of their themed rides. Most rides are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes each.

Orrville Railroad Heritage Society

Orville was originally a fuel and water stop for the Ohio & Pennsylvania Railroad and The Orrville Railroad Heritage Society has worked hard to restore the 1868 depot. After saving it from demolition in the 1980s, the depot now serves as a meeting place, museum, gift shop, and excursion ticket office.

The society offers several event days throughout the year and group tours are available with advance reservation. Be sure to check their website for their schedule of events or call for details.

Dennison Railroad Depot Museum 

Step back into the WWII history of the Dennison Depot and “walk in the footsteps of American heroes.” As one of the main stopping depots for American Servicemen, the depot offered refreshment and encouragement during wartime which earned Dennison the nickname “Dreamsville, USA.”

Today, the depot has been saved from near demolition and has been restored as a museum, restaurant, and gift shop. Along with railroad and WWII exhibits and special events, guests are offered hospitality with a smile, coffee, and a free cookie when visiting.

Check their events page for train ride events and their very popular Polar Express event for kids of all ages. Tickets can be purchased at the museum or online through each event’s ticket link.

Age of Steam Roundhouse

As a full-size working roundhouse, the Age of Steam Roundhouse is a great place for locomotive enthusiasts to learn and experience the restoration of these great machines. The roundhouse itself is a fully-functional workshop complete with 18 stalls, a 115-foot turntable, and a turntable pit for their 22 historic steam locomotives.

Lorain & West Virginia Railway 

With its beautiful red engine, comfortable coach cars, open gondola car, and little red caboose, The Lorain & West Virginia Railway makes for a fun ride. 

Each year the railway offers themed excursions, including “Wine on Rails,” their popular “Santa Train,” and more. Special rides can also be arranged in advance for field trips and other group events.

Tickets can be ordered online and picked up at the station no less than 15 minutes before departure as the train leaves the station promptly at the stated time. While you’re waiting for your train, be sure to look around the station. It was originally located in Oberlin before it was moved to its current Wellington location — piece by piece!

Northeast Ohio Live Steamers 

Kids and adults of all ages love trains and the miniature train rides at Lester Rail Trail in Medina offer a unique train riding experience! During select dates throughout the year, the Northeastern Ohio Live Steamers offer free train rides around a miniature railroad and station house at the Medina County Parks.

This year they have rides scheduled on select dates in June, July, and September and special Halloween-themed rides in October. Costumes are encouraged for the Halloween rides, but they ask that long, flowing garments be avoided for safety.

Each ride lasts about 10 minutes and is free of any charge. Donations are welcome. Dates and details can be found on their website link.

Lake Shore Live Steamers 

The Lake Shore Live Steamers Club has been an active group since 1969. Since that time they have lain thousands of feet of track through the woods of Penitentiary Glen Reservation for their mini trains.

It feels like a step back in time to the way people used to travel. At the same time, it’s immersive into the natural world around the region, creating a meaningful experience for most who ride.

About the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is a train that runs through the heart of Nelsonville Ohio. The original rail line was founded in 1864 and called the Mineral Rail Road. It connected Columbus to Athens Ohio. A few years later, the name was changed to the Columbus & Hocking Valley Railroad.

From the start, the rail line was designed to move salt and coal, but over the coming years, it became critical for moving brick, which helped build the region’s cities. Passenger service was established in 1869 and provided a fast way to get to Lancaster.

Over the years, the railroad’s name and purpose changed, often expanding to include new areas and towns. Passenger service on the train ended in 1949 with many of the rail depots closing down and ultimately being torn down in the coming years.

Today, the train is managed entirely by volunteers, and it no longer moves coal. Rather, it has become a tourist destination in Ohio for Hocking Hills train rides. Many people come to the area to explore the feel of the railroad, and numerous types of train rides are available.

The Hocking Valley Train & Route

The train currently used on the Hocking Valley rail line is made up of equipment that ranges from 1917 through 1960. It features some surprising amenities, including enclosed coaches and three open-air cars. These open-air cars were once historic freight cars, but today, they make for a fun way to enjoy the ride.

The train travels along a 145-year-old route that used to link Columbus and Lake Erie to the Southern portions of Ohio. The route allows visitors to see a number of fun sites along the way, including the Nelsonville Brick Company, Hocking Canal, and miles and miles of beautiful, dense forest.

One of the best things about the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is that it operates most times of the year, providing fun excursions with various themes. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most impressive Nelsonville train rides available each year.

Dinner Train Rides

An old-fashioned Hocking Valley Railway dinner train ride is one of the best ways to experience the railroad. This is a three-hour trip that takes you through the Southeast Ohio backcountry all the way to East Logan and then returns.

A four-course dinner takes place on the trip with a range of foods available. This dinner train experience is for those who are over the age of 21. As an elegant dinner train experience, it’s not only enjoyable and tastes great but also makes for the perfect romantic dinner.

Starbrick BBQ and Brew’s Express

For those looking for a two-hour scenic train ride with lots of food and beer, the Starbrick BBQ and Brew’s Express is a must-do experience. The ticket includes a meal that consists of a chicken wing dinner, strawberry shortcake, and a can of beer (up to four per passenger available).

This trip, also for those who are over the age of 21, is designed to provide a fun evening out. This dining experience must be booked in advance and is a popular option.

The Murder Mystery Dinner Train

Are you looking for a more exciting experience? Perhaps, one that’s more interactive? The Murder Mystery Dinner Train is a fantastic opportunity.

This experience allows guests to particulate in uncovering the mysterious murder of a passenger. And, the meal is one of gourmet prime rib with fixings. It is a fun train ride that includes plenty of time spent relaxing with a drink and a show.

Holiday Train Rides

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway has long been a valuable tool for transportation during the colder months, but today, it is more focused on providing holiday experiences for guests.

There are a number of events throughout the winter months and the rest of the year that are celebrated with lots of fun on the railroad. Here are some of them.

Easter Bunny Train & Egg Hunt

The Easter Bunny Train & Egg Hunt is a fun way to get the kids involved. Two trains depart for the trip, each traveling past Haydenville and then returning to Nelsonville.

On the return trip, the train stops at a secret hiding spot where the Easter Bunny lives, allowing kids to spend some time finding Easter eggs. Prizes and age-appropriate activities are provided too. The Easter train trip takes about two hours to complete.

Memorial Day Train

Celebrating Memorial Day is a very important tradition in the region. The Memorial Day Train ride is the East Logan weekend train experience, which leaves from Nelsonville and travels on the Hocking River Valley path.

There are a number of historic sites on the way, including the city of Haydenville, where the brick company used to be. Other experiences include the Hocking Canal locks and the gravel mine.

Fall Foliage Train Ride

There’s nothing quite like the vibrance of the fall leaves in Ohio , and the Fall Foliage Train Tour is one of the best ways to experience it all. The trains depart on select days during October.

The ride is about two hours, taking riders to East Logan and back again. Open-air cars are available as long as the weather is good.

Nelsonville Labor Day Train

Another relaxing train experience is the Nelsonville Labor Day Train, a trip that happens each Labor Day. The train leaves the Nelsonville Depot and travels along the Hocking River Valley, passing through Haydenville and other sites along the way.

It’s a great way to spend this special day and provides a fantastic view along the way.

Nelsonville Halloween Train

A trunk-or-treat type of experience, the Nelsonville Halloween Train leaves from Nelsonville in the evening and traverses the spooky Hocking River Valley. Kids and parents can dress up appropriately, and there’s lots of candy to be had.

Santa Train

Perhaps one of the most sought-after tickets of the year is for the Santa Train. This two-hour train ride is a 40-year tradition in the region, taking families along the East Logan route and back.

Santa gets on board and visits with each child during the experience, and the often snow-covered hills make for a mesmerizing sight.

New Year’s Eve Train & Fireworks

During the New Year’s Eve Train & Fireworks experience, the train stops near midnight to view a fantastic fireworks display. With two themes, the event is a fun way to ring in the New Year.

Hocking Valley Steam Train Special

All Caboose Train Ride

If you enjoy trains, you will want to book the All Caboose Train Ride, an opportunity to check out all of the cabooses in the area. The rail uses privately owned cabooses to operate this unique, annual train ride.

The train makes its way to East Logan but stops along the way for some photos. There is very little seating for this ride, so booking in advance is a must.

Ohio Passenger Railroads and Scenic Railroads

Besides Ohio's early canals, railroads played and still play an important part of our commerce. America's first regular commercial rail service was the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad which started in 1828. The Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad became the first regular rail service to operate from Ohio in 1837.

By 1850 there was a rail boom in Ohio and by 1860 there was more railroad track laid in Ohio than any other state with almost 3000 miles of track connecting every major community in Ohio. While many might think that railroads are a thing of the past, today Ohio has more than 5,230 miles of working rail lines crossing the state.

Most of the passenger lines have disappeared from Ohio. Amtrak still offers regular train service across Ohio's north coast with stations at Alliance, Cleveland, Elyria, Sandusky, Toledo, and Bryan Ohio. In the south, there are stops only in Cincinnati, but on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River, there are Amtrak stops at Ashland, South Shore, and Maysville KY.

There are still several scenic railroads in regular operation providing visitors an opportunity to experience what rail travel was like.. Many of the scenic railroads that were once popular throughout the state have found the economy to be more of a problem than keeping their rolling stock in good condition.

There are numerous railroad museums throughout the state, with the oldest one being the Ohio Railway Museum in Worthington , Ohio.

Ohio has about 10 operating scenic railroads that provide periodic excursions through the country and that number is likely to grow. Just recently, the new Lodi Station Outlets has included a rail line to their shopping experience so shoppers can ride the rails and shop at the same location.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad in Northeastern Ohio runs through the heart of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Each trip is a different adventure filled with fun, excitement, natural beauty and historic sights. Spend a little or a lot of time exploring the things you like to see and do. You'll ride comfortably in vintage climate-controlled coaches built between 1939 and 1940. The coaches originally saw passenger service on the Seaboard and Santa Fe Railroads. Sit back, relax and enjoy a train ride to many exciting round trip destinations. It's all waiting for you. The train. The trips. The sights. The professional staff. Get on Board. Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

Take a leisurely ride through the beautiful hills of southeastern Ohio. Enjoy the blooming dogwood trees in the spring, summertime fun, nature's spectacular fall foliage or a special winter ride with Santa. The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway offers diesel-powered rides through the beautiful, rolling hills of Southeastern Ohio aboard vintage equipment. The coaches used were built in 1927 for commuter service around Chicago and the primary diesel locomotive we use was built back in October of 1952. The coaches are heated in the winter. Regular service rides are held on weekends throughout the summer months from Memorial Day thru Labor Day and special rides at Christmas, Easter and a number of other special rides including a train robbery and a murder mystery ride.

While visiting the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway, also visit the Nelsonville's Historic Square Arts District.

Byesville Scenic Railway

The Byesville Scenic Railway has stopped offering train excursions. Plans for future excursion offerings are undecided at this time, but according to their web site they are hopeful that circumstances will change. They do have a memorial statue dedicated to the Coal Miner's contribution to Ohio's industry and a special museum featuring coal miner's equipment and artifacts.

Toledo, Lake Erie & Western Railway and Museum

The scenic rail trips are no longer in operation at this time. They are hoping to have the trips resume as quickly as possible. They are offering motor car rides.

Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad

Experience a nostalgic train ride on the Lebanon Mason Monroe (LM&M) Railroad through Warren County in Southwestern, Ohio. Every weekend the LM&M invites you to reminisce and capture moments with family. Walk through the train to the open-air gondola and listen to informative conductors describe railroad history and operation as well as offer a brief locomotive tour.

Formerly known as the Lebanon and Turtlecreek Railway, the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad (LM&M) operates out of the beautiful Lebanon Station, in historic downtown Lebanon, Ohio. The train consists of a restored 1950s-era GP-7 diesel-electric locomotive, four open-window commuter coaches built in 1930, and a popular open-air gondola car on the rear of the train that allows passengers to enjoy panoramic views.

Throughout the season, they often have other locomotives head up the tour trains like the above Flagg Coal Company #75 that took part in their "All Steamed Up!" excursions in June 2008. This is a small, industrial-type engine, with an 0-4-0 wheel configuration. Built in 1930 by Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., it was first purchased by the Flagg Coal Company in Pennsylvania, but then sold to the Solvay Process Quarry in New York, where it was used to push cart loads of rock. In 1954, it was purchased by railroad conservationist Dr. Stanley Groman. After Groman’s death in 1991, father and son team Byron and John Gramling purchased and restored the locomotive.

Orrville Railroad Heritage Society

The Orrville Railroad Heritage Society welcomes you aboard the open-air passenger car #501 or caboose #330.

Though it is a short 40-minute ride, you will get the chance to view nature and go over the North Fork Sugar Creek bridge.

This society aims to preserve Ohio’s railway history. Make sure to stop by the Orrville Union Depot Museum.

They also put on many events throughout the year, including National Train Day, Orrville Railroad Day, Jumpin’ Pumpkin Jamboree, and Christmas at the Depot.

Lebanon Mason and Monroe Railroad

The Lebanon Mason and Monroe Railroad is based out of Lebanon, one of the best small towns in Ohio .

Most of the trains travel between Lebanon and Hageman Junction for a 9-mile roundtrip journey. Some of the excursions also connect to Mason or Monroe.

Out of the big windows of the vintage passenger coaches, you will see pretty nature and rural scenes. The train also crosses five bridges.

For kids, there is the Pumpkin Patch Express and the North Pole Express. The Princess Express and the Superhero Train include fun character interactions.

Zanesville and Western Scenic Railroad Is One Of The Best Train Rides In Ohio

The Zanesville and Western Scenic Railroad in Mt. Perry provides 40-minute scenic train rides in Ohio along the historic Glass Rock Spur rail line.

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is a volunteer-operated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We operate historic train rides from Nelsonville, Ohio, a close drive to the Hocking Hills. The track was originally built in 1869 and the HVSR has been providing family-friendly train rides since 1972. In addition to regular weekend trains between May and October, there are several themed trains including Robbery Trains, Dinner Trains, a Halloween Train, October Fall Foliage, Steam Specials, Santa Trains, and a New Year’s Eve Train. What is the train schedule?

Fun rides are available for kids and adults of all ages from the first weekend in August through the last weekend of October plus some additional dates in November and December. On all those weekends, train rides will be available from 12pm to 4pm with the train departing on the hour except as noted.

Where can I purchase tickets?

Tickets can be purchased on the Home page using the Purchase Tickets button.

Where are you located?

Our address is 5700 SR 204 Mt. Perry OH 43760. You will park across the street at 5705 SR 204 Mt. Perry OH

How long is the train ride?

About 40 minutes, round trip.

When should we get there?

Please arrive 15 minutes or more before your scheduled departure.

Where does the train go?

The train ride is currently an “out and back” roundtrip where you will see scenic woods and farmland.

What kind of seating is there?

Outside seating is bench seats. Inside is padded vintage coach seating.

Is the train handicap accessible?

We have a ramp that will accommodate most walkers. We have limited ability to accommodate wheelchairs due to narrow aisles. Please contact us with your specific needs.

Is there a restroom on the train?

There is a Porta-Potty on the boarding platform. It is serviced weekly.

Can I work on the railroad?

We have many opportunities for those who would like to volunteer, including conductor, engineer, train guide, and ticket agent.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A $12 billion passenger bullet train linking Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area was dubbed the first true high-speed rail line in the nation on Monday, with the private company building it predicting millions of ticket-buyers will be boarding trains by 2028.

“People have been dreaming of high-speed rail in America for decades,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg before taking a stage with union representatives and company officials at the future site of a terminal to be built just south of the Las Vegas Strip. “It’s really happening this time.”

Buttigieg cited Biden administration support for the project that he said will bring thousands of union jobs, boost local economies and cut traffic and air pollution.

Brightline West, whose sister company already operates a fast train between Miami and Orlando in Florida, aims to lay 218 miles (351 kilometers) of new track almost all in the median of Interstate 15 between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga, California. It would link there with a commuter rail connection to downtown Los Angeles. A station also is planned in San Bernardino County’s Victorville area.

Company officials say the goal is to have trains exceeding speeds of 186 mph (300 kph) — comparable to Japan’s Shinkansen bullet trains — operating in time for the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

“I believe we’ll look back at today and say, ’This was the birth of an industry of high-speed rail,’” Brightline Holdings founder Wes Edens said Monday.

The company aims to link U.S. cities that are too near each other for air travel to make sense and too far for people to drive.

Las Vegas has no Amtrak service. The idea of a bullet train to Los Angeles dates back decades under various names including DesertXpress. Brightline West acquired the project in 2019, and company and public officials say it has all required right-of-way and environmental approvals, along with labor agreements.

Brightline received Biden administration backing including a $3 billion grant from federal infrastructure funds and recent approval to sell another $2.5 billion in tax-exempt bonds. The company won federal authorization in 2020 to sell $1 billion in similar bonds.

Brightline West says electric-powered trains will cut the four-hour trip across the Mojave Desert to a little more than two hours. It projects 11 million one-way passengers per year, with fares that Edens said will be comparable to airline ticket costs. The trains will offer rest rooms, Wi-Fi, food and beverage sales and the option to check luggage.

Officials hope the train line will relieve congestion on I-15, where drivers often sit in miles of crawling traffic while returning home to Southern California from a Las Vegas weekend. An average of more than 44,000 automobiles per day crossed the California-Nevada state line on I-15 in 2023, according to Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority data.

Florida-based Brightline Holdings’ Miami-line debuted in 2018 and expanded service to Orlando International Airport last September with trains reaching speeds up to 125 mph (200 kph). It offers 16 round-trips per day with one-way tickets for the 235-mile (378-kilometer) distance costing about $80.

Other fast trains in the U.S. include Amtrak’s Acela, which can top 150 mph (241 kph) between Boston and Washington, D.C. But fast train connections for other U.S. cities have been floated, including Dallas to Houston ; Atlanta to Charlotte, North Carolina ; Chicago to St. Louis ; and Seattle to Portland, Oregon. Most have faced delays.

In California, a proposed 500-mile (805-kilometer) rail line linking Los Angeles and San Francisco was approved by voters in 2008, but has been beset by rising costs and routing disputes . A 2022 business plan by the California High-Speed Rail Authority projected the cost had more than tripled to $105 billion.

• DEAP celebrates diversity during Cincinnati field trip

DEAP students take interactive field trip to Cincinnati

The Diversity Enrichment and Achievement Program (DEAP) has continued to increase campus commitment to diversity among its students. In celebration of Black History Month, the program took its students on an interactive trip to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

DEAP centers its purpose on fostering a community of support and executing uplifting initiatives to assist underrepresented groups of students in transitioning to and succeeding in college.

Cory Clark is the director of DEAP and believes these educational trips aid students in developing cultural awareness, identity, and a sense of belonging.

“Part of DEAP’s objectives and outcomes is ensuring that students understand their culture and identity and being able to expose others to different cultures and identities because a lot of students have separate backgrounds,” Clark said.

Beyond DEAP, students from programs such as 21st Century Scholars, Indy Achieves, and TRIO Student Support Services participated in the trip.

“Sometimes it’s not always about being in a presentation and learning these things but being able to go out and experience art and culture and having these different ways of learning not only your identity, but other cultures, other histories,” Clark said.

Dre’von Smith and Lakyah Berry are two students still left in awe from the trip.

Smith, a sophomore majoring in visual communication design, has been in DEAP since his freshman year.

Smith highlighted the trip’s deviation from a general classroom experience, with the trip having more hands-on learning and providing relatable real-world examples of culture and identity.

“Experiences such as these help students to better understand areas of oppression and ways to understand different rules and laws in effect to provide individuals with the pursuit of freedom and opportunity,” Smith said.

Berry, a freshman majoring in social work, was moved by the exhibits’ raw display of narratives.

"Trips like this can help encourage thoughtful dialogue because it allows present generations to really reckon with the history of our society in a meaningful way," Berry said. "We were able to cry together at some of the exhibits and process this history together. Understanding how our past shapes our present and futures is vital."

The program has been actively hosting similar trips since early last year. During the spring 2023 semester, the program took students to the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The trip aimed to expose students to Ali’s history not only as an athlete but also as a civil rights and social justice advocate.

The previous semester’s trip occurred during Latinx Heritage Month, where students had the opportunity to travel to Chicago to visit the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and the National Museum of Mexican Art.

Clark anticipates planning future trips for students and recognizes a positive correlation between educational trips and how they contribute to identity and self-efficacy.

“It contributes not only to identity development and cultural awareness, but also a sense of community amongst our students, which is very essential for student success,” Clark said.
