Experience the best of Coimbatore in just one day with our ultimate guide to a memorable day trip. Discover the highlights of Coimbatore in a single day and create memories to last a lifetime. Start planning your unforgettable journey with one day trip in Coimbatore!

While I may not be a follower of Sadhguru, visiting the Isha Yoga Centre has long intrigued me, particularly witnessing the renowned Adiyogi statue. It was this curiosity that prompted my journey to Coimbatore. Admittedly, before planning this trip, I had little knowledge of other attractions in the city. Typically, Coimbatore had been merely a brief stopover during my travels, with little time dedicated to exploration. However, I deliberately extended my stay on this occasion and delved deeper into the city’s offerings.

About Coimbatore

Coimbatore is the second-largest city in Tamil Nadu, renowned for its ancient and vibrant temples. The “Manchester of South India” owes this moniker to its thriving textile industry, a prominent regional hub.

The optimal time to visit Coimbatore is during the monsoon and winter, from July to February when the climate is pleasantly mild. However, brace yourself for the sweltering heat, particularly during the afternoon.

With just two days at hand, you can fully immerse yourself in the essence of Coimbatore. Remarkably, during my brief stay of two days, I managed to explore the city and its surrounding attractions within a single day.

How to Get to Coimbatore?

Being the second largest city in Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore boasts its airport. The Coimbatore International Airport connects the city to domestic and international destinations. Among the prominent airlines operating from this airport are Indigo and Air India .

The airport is approximately 10 kilometres from the heart of Coimbatore and offers convenient access to the city and surrounding areas.

Located approximately 360 kilometres from Bangalore, Coimbatore is reachable by a scenic 7-hour drive. Optimal travel is via the route leading towards Hosur, featuring well-maintained and smooth roads.

Coimbatore lies roughly 500 kilometres from Chennai, making it notably closer to Bangalore than Chennai. Travelling by road from Chennai to Coimbatore typically spans around 9 hours.

By Public Transport

Coimbatore boasts excellent connectivity through public transportation, with frequent buses and trains linking it to major cities and towns.

  • Train – For train travel, the Kovai Junction railway station serves as the primary hub in Coimbatore. With its status as a major railway station, Kovai Junction offers a wide array of train services. Travelers can access up-to-date information regarding train routes, schedules, and fares through the official IRCTC website.
  • Bus – Alternatively, numerous government-operated and privately run buses ply between Coimbatore and various cities and towns. For detailed information on bus services, travellers can refer to the Redbus website.

Where to Stay at Coimbatore?

Coimbatore offers a range of accommodation options to suit every traveller’s needs and preferences. Whether you’re seeking luxury, comfort, or budget-friendly stays, you’ll find something that fits the bill. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Radisson Blu Coimbatore : A five-star hotel near the airport and railway station, offering spacious rooms, modern amenities, and excellent service.
  • Vivanta Coimbatore : Another upscale option, part of the Taj group, known for its elegant rooms, gourmet dining, and top-notch hospitality.
  • The Residency Towers Coimbatore : A luxury hotel in the heart of the city featuring stylish rooms, fine dining restaurants, and a range of facilities, including a swimming pool and fitness centre.
  • Hotel CAG Pride : A popular mid-range hotel offering comfortable rooms, good dining options, and business facilities, ideal for leisure and business travellers.
  • Hotel Heritage Inn : A budget-friendly option with clean and comfortable rooms close to major attractions and offering value-for-money accommodation.

Radisson Blu Coimbatore

I opted for a luxurious stay for my recent trip and reserved a room at the esteemed Radisson Blu . Boasting a five-star rating, this hotel offers 135 rooms, ensuring comfort and convenience for its guests. Near both the Coimbatore airport and railway station, Radisson Blu is an optimal choice whether you travel for business or leisure.

The booking process was a breeze, facilitated by their user-friendly online platform. Guests can choose from three distinct room categories:

  • Junior Suite

During my stay, I opted for the Superior room, priced at approximately INR 5800 per night, including taxes and breakfast. Upon entering the room, I was immediately impressed by its spacious layout and impeccable cleanliness. The room’s tasteful decor and well-appointed bathroom further enhanced my experience. Additionally, I was treated to stunning sunset views each evening, adding a touch of serenity to my stay.

Room at Radisson Blu Coimbatore

Despite its amenities, such as a swimming pool and spa, my experience at the hotel was slightly marred by the swimming pool’s temporary closure due to maintenance issues, as communicated by the staff citing chemical treatment requirements. Nonetheless, the hotel features an enticing in-house restaurant offering buffet and à la carte dining options. Opting for the buffet throughout my stay, I was thoroughly impressed by the extensive array of dishes and delectable desserts.

However, what truly elevated my experience was the exceptional service provided by the staff. Their warmth and attentiveness made me feel completely at ease throughout my stay. Their dedication to customer satisfaction was evident in their prompt and courteous assistance. I hold them in even higher regard due to their exemplary service, which undoubtedly enhanced my overall impression of the hotel.

4 Places to See in Coimbatore

Arulmigu subramaniyaswami temple.

Nestled atop the picturesque Marudamalai hill, the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy temple is a testament to 12th-century Tamil architecture commissioned by the Tamil Kings.

Dedicated to Lord Subramaniya Swamy, also known as Murugan, this sacred site holds significant religious reverence. Just a short 15-kilometre drive from Coimbatore city, perched at an elevation of 700 meters, the temple is revered as one of the six principal abodes of God under Kunruthoradal.

Opening its gates from 6 AM to 8:30 PM daily, visitors have ample opportunity to explore its spiritual ambience and architectural marvels. Watch for the enchanting presence of peacocks and peahens along the way, adding to the serene atmosphere.

Arulmigu Subramaniyaswami temple Coimbatore

Upon arrival, vehicles can conveniently access the parking area with a nominal fee of approximately INR 15 per car. A brief ascent of 10 to 20 steps leads to the temple entrance.

Given the religious significance of the site, it’s advisable to dress modestly, respecting the conservative norms observed in Coimbatore’s temples, which may differ slightly from those in Karnataka.

Arulmigu Patteeswarar Swamy Temple

Located in Perur, the Arulmigu Patteeswarar Swamy temple is a revered site from the 2nd century, commissioned by Karikala Chola. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, revered as Patteeswara, and Goddess Parvathi, known as Pachainayaki, this ancient temple exudes architectural and spiritual significance.

Opening its doors every day from 6:15 AM to 1 PM and from 4 PM to 8 PM, devotees have ample opportunity to partake in the temple’s spiritual ambience and seek blessings from the divine deities.

Throughout the year, the temple hosts two major festivals: the Panguni Uthiram festival and the Seedling Plant festival, attracting devotees from far and wide to partake in the celebrations.

For the convenience of visitors, the temple complex offers paid car parking facilities, with a nominal fee of approximately INR 15 per car, ensuring a hassle-free experience for worshippers and visitors.

Arulmigu Patteeswarar Swamy temple Coimbatore

Gedee Car Museum

Nestled in Anna Salai, the Gedee Car Museum is a testament to automotive history, boasting a remarkable collection of vintage cars. Founded by Sri G.D. Naidu, this museum offers a captivating journey through the evolution of automobiles.

Open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 9 AM to 5 PM, and on Sundays from 10 AM to 6 PM, the museum invites visitors to delve into the rich heritage of cars and their development over time. Please note that the museum remains closed on Mondays.

For access to this treasure trove of automotive marvels, there’s a nominal entrance fee of INR 75 per person, ensuring an enriching and educational experience for all who visit.

Isha Yoga Centre

Founded in 1992 under the guidance of Sadhguru, the Isha Yoga Centre is a non-profit spiritual sanctuary. Rooted in the concept of the formless divine, known as “Isha,” the centre operates primarily through the dedicated efforts of volunteers.

The Isha Yoga Centre encompasses two primary components:

  • Dhyanalinga, which includes Linga Bhairavi and Theerthakunds.

Interestingly, another Isha Foundation is located in Chikkaballapura , just a day trip from Bangalore .

Dhyanalinga

Beyond its awe-inspiring Dhyanalinga , the Isha Yoga Centre complex offers many experiences awaiting exploration. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by informative centres and an array of stalls, setting the stage for a multifaceted journey. One encounters the dining hall, housing an inviting in-house restaurant.

Adjacent to the dining area lies the Surya khund, a rejuvenating pool designated for men. At the same time, the Chandra khund, situated near the Linga Bhairavi temple, provides a similar experience for women. Guests are encouraged to take a refreshing dip in these pools before proceeding to the meditation hall.

Curiosity led me to inquire about the significance of this ritual from one of the volunteers. I learned that the practice serves dual purposes: firstly, it offers medicinal benefits, and secondly, it prepares the mind and body for a serene meditation experience. Allegedly, fully submerged for at least 7 minutes allows one to appreciate these effects.

Central to the complex is the Dhyanalinga meditation hall, where guests are invited to meditate in a magnificent 33-foot-high Linga crafted from black granite. Illuminated solely by natural light or lamps, the ambience fosters a tranquil atmosphere conducive to introspection. Visitors can offer lotus flowers, lamps, and garlands as tokens of reverence if they so desire, enhancing their spiritual connection within this sacred space.

Among the wonders of the Isha Yoga Centre, one that resonated deeply with me was the awe-inspiring Adiyogi. Standing proudly at a towering height of 112 feet, this magnificent statue represents the archetype of the first Yogi, Lord Shiva. The grandeur of its stature symbolizes the 112 ways Shiva imparted the wisdom of achieving well-being and realizing one’s ultimate nature.

Notably, the Adiyogi statue has garnered global recognition, earning a prestigious place in the Guinness World Record as the Largest Bust Sculpture in the world . This remarkable feat further underscores the profound significance and impact of this iconic representation of ancient wisdom and spiritual heritage.

Adiyogi at Isha foundation, Coimbatore

Visitor Information

  • The Dhyanalinga and Adiyogi are accessible to visitors daily from 6 AM to 8 PM. There is no entrance fee required to explore these sacred spaces.
  • However, please note that photography is prohibited within the Dhyanalinga complex. Mobile phones must be deposited at designated counters located just outside the complex.
  • In adherence to the spiritual ambience, a dress code is enforced, prohibiting shorts or revealing attire.
  • Situated approximately 30 kilometres from Coimbatore city, transportation is necessary to reach the Isha Yoga Centre. Taxis are readily available, or visitors can opt for frequent bus services connecting the city to the centre.
  • Phone: 04222515470/71.
  • Email: [email protected] .
  • Parking facilities are available at the Adiyogi site. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a unique bullock cart ride between the Dhyanalinga complex and Adiyogi, adding an element of traditional charm to their journey.

Is Coimbatore Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

Coimbatore is a safe destination for solo female travellers. I encountered no issues throughout my visit, and everyone I interacted with was amiable and welcoming. I wholeheartedly endorse Coimbatore as a top choice for solo female travellers in India. Nevertheless, exercising caution is essential, as in any city worldwide, particularly during nighttime hours.

Closing Notes

Coimbatore is undeniably emerging as a prominent tourist destination in Tamil Nadu, mainly due to the presence of the Isha Foundation. I was genuinely impressed by the magnitude of Sadhguru’s vision, witnessing how he and his team have established a mini-city within the bustling metropolis of Coimbatore. I recommend allocating a few days to explore this vibrant hub when visiting Tamil Nadu.
