Pat Metheny Begins Extensive North American Dream Box Tour Sep 13, Featuring Music From All His Solo Recordings

pat metheny dream box tour 2023

(August 2023 – Press Release) — After a globe-trotting 33-stop tour this past spring and summer with his Side-Eye band, legendary American guitarist, composer and improviser Pat Metheny takes to the road again, this time as a solo act, beginning on September 13 in Homer, NY.

With currently scheduled coast-to-coast performances in 51 venues across 29 states and more to be added in March and April 2024, by the end of the Dream Box tour in 2024 Metheny will have given at least 76 performances of the program in the United States. The tour gives him the chance to explore his approach to being a solo performer in both traditional and unorthodox ways in the kinds of intimate venues that will offer audiences an absolutely unique concert experience:

“I’m really looking forward to doing this pretty significant tour that will just be me. I’m going to draw on all my solo records, from New Chautauqua on, and I’ve written a lot of that kind of material: narrative, storytelling, with expositional-type improvising. I did a test run of solo concerts a couple years ago and I really, really enjoyed it. It’s going to be something quite different for me, that intimate relationship. I think I’ll probably actually talk some on the gig, which I generally don’t like to do, but it sort of fits with what this evening will be.” Pat Metheny

Metheny has produced a catalog of recordings that, measured in terms of influence, is in a class by itself: 50 recordings that have won 20 Grammys in twelve different categories. New Chautauqua (1979) almost single-handedly defined an era of instrumental steel-stringed Americana that spawned legions of imitators. Zero Tolerance for Silence pushed the boundaries of modern music-making once again and served as a companion piece to the Grammy-winning disc Secret Story. The Orchestrion Project – for which Metheny wrote the music and built a series of instruments to be controlled by his guitar, recording the results both in the studio and in a live concert – was so new in conception and execution that even a decade-plus later, it still stands apart from any previous ideas of what a solo performer might achieve alone onstage.

Alongside those projects was yet another stream of development: two back-to-back, Grammy-winning solo baritone guitar recordings: One Quiet Night and What’s It All About , the predecessors to Dream Box . Not only do they shine as pure solo guitar recordings, but they also introduced an entirely new tuning system that allowed Metheny to create an almost orchestral range, from bass to soprano, within the realm of a simple steel six-string guitar.

Jazz Concert Review: PAT METHENY (Dream Box Tour at Royce Hall, UCLA)

PAT ON THE BACK

When one thinks of the always-inventive and distinctive guitarist Pat Metheny , it is generally of the great bands he has had (including the Pat Metheny Group with the late Lyle Mays on keyboards and the Unity Band with Chris Potter), his recordings with bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist John Scofield, and of his appearances with all-star groups. But when he appeared at Royce Hall for a 2 ½ hour set, it was quite a bit different.

pat metheny dream box tour 2023

Pat Metheny was the only musician onstage. While there were times when he used electrical devices that allowed him to spontaneously create parts that he soloed over, it was essentially a colorful one-man show. It is to his great credit that he never lost the audience’s attention.

pat metheny dream box tour 2023

Metheny started off with a medley of his compositions on acoustic guitar which he played at a relaxed and thoughtful tempo. He remembered Haden and the Beyond The Missouri duet album that they made together by playing a medley of tunes from the intimate project (including the bassist’s “First Song”). A brief departure from the quiet music took place when he suddenly switched to a thunderous free-form piece but then things calmed down when he played an orchestral number on his 42-string Picasso guitar. He performed a medley of mostly standards on the baritone guitar (including “Alfie,” “Rainy Days and Mondays” and “The Girl from Ipanema”), and then he jammed on a medium-tempo blues, adding other instruments including a rhythm guitar and a walking bass. Quite intriguing was the guitarist’s work with his Orchestrion, magically creating his own orchestra.

pat metheny dream box tour 2023

While Pat Metheny rarely speaks on stage, the night at Royce Hall was an exception. During the first half of the evening he talked quite a bit including about his early days, his period with Gary Burton, his memories of Charlie Haden, and the different guitars that he uses. I wish that he had continued talking during the second half for he did not say anything about his band with Lyle Mays or any of a dozen other interesting topics, but it was nice to hear him reminisce a bit.

Pat Metheny can always be relied upon to put on stimulating, virtuosic and surprising shows. That has been true of his performances during the past 50 years and it was certainly true of his solo night at Royce Hall.

Pat Metheny has announced his upcoming U.S. tour for 2023. It's called the Dream Box Tour - SOLO. I'm assuming that means he will be playing solo guitar pieces? The only info I have right now is what he announced on his Twitter and Website, which isn't much more than is in this ad. Regardless, I'll be there when he comes to my city, because Pat, Benson, and Martino are my 3 main influences, when it comes to jazz guitar.

I'm not sure to will come close enough for us but I'd be willing to drive quite a distance to see him play alone.

True that! I'm really looking forward to it, because Pat's solo guitar playing is absolutely extraordinary. His solo guitar cover of Nora Jones' "Don't Know Why" is beautiful playing, and an expert clinic on what's possible on solo guitar. He has so many like that, too. I'm hoping I can get front row seats.

i saw him do ‘and i love her’ solo on nylon as an encore in hammersmith odeon a few years ago everyone was leaving ! so i went up the front probably 10 feet away …. i love that tune and he absolutely killed it he was totally dedicated and focused it affected me quite deeply the guys great ….

Doctor Jeff is online now

Haven’t seen him in, uh, almost 40 years. Would love to see him again. His last 2 albums are great and IMO rank up there with his classic works. He is still pushing boundaries both with studio and live work. He did play in Lincoln—an hour away—a year or 2 ago, but frankly in the midst of COVID I was not keen on driving a long distance and wearing a mask to see someone. Especially mid-week. I do hope to see him again the next time he tours around here.

Great to see he is doing this. His What's it all about album is my favorite thing he has done. That album has great tunes, great arrangements played brilliantly by him.I have a friend whose eyes will glaze over if i play a jazz album with endless solo's but she loves his solo album and she says jazz needs more of this and might sell more than the one percent in sales it does now. He's doing this tour to support his Dream Box solo album that comes out in June.
“Dream Box is an unusual recording for me; a compilation of solo tracks recorded across a few years that I discovered while listening on tour. During the extensive touring period that made up most of 2022 for me, I found a forgotten folder on my drive. I often make quick recordings of things; a new tune, a new (or old) guitar, a standard tune, or just to try something out. I have a spot in my laptop where I stash these things. And truthfully; often never to be heard again. Usually, the only time I get to listen to my own stuff is while on the road. I often say I live on output, with little or no time for input. That changes on tour, where suddenly there seems to be more free hours in the day, albeit on a bus or in some far-flung hotel room. Occasionally, those moments offer a chance to rummage around in the files to see if anything interesting may lie there. This past year was a particularly busy travel year for me, with about 160 performances worldwide. In the course of all that travel, I found myself returning to that discovered folder lots of times, genuinely surprised at what I was finding in there. From those listening sessions, I gradually sifted through everything to find this program emerging as a coherent whole. I found that I had unintentionally gotten to a destination I had not planned for, and I am excited to share what was buried in there. These nine tracks were my favorites and added up to something unique for me. I never played any of these initial tracks included here more than that once. These are really moments in time, and in fact, I have almost no memory of having recorded most of them. They just kind of showed up. Every track but one reflects a method of recording that began for me on the piece Unity Village way back on Bright Size Life; an initial harmonic part laid down with the chords followed by a second track of melodic and improvisational material. The focus here is on electric guitar, but maybe more to the point; quiet electric guitar. It is an area of particular interest for me. A goal has always been to have a touch on the electric that might get me as close to the kind of phrase-by-phrase dynamics that can occur naturally with an acoustic instrument. In fact, using an electric in this way is quite a bit harder than what occurs naturally with an acoustic. There is one more step between the touch of the player and the listener that has to be accounted for. Ballads. I write one a day it seems - more than I can keep track of, actually. Charlie Haden was the guy who encouraged me to not just write a lead sheet, but to document each thing I write by doing even just a simple recording of it. So, yet again, thanks, Charlie. Regarding the title, box is musician slang for a hollow-body electric guitar. Using that vernacular, there are some super cool Dream Box instruments represented on this recording, including the prototype of new instrument I have been working with Ibanez on that reflects my interest in pre-war Charlie Christian style pick-ups. But dreams in their broadest sense make up the vibe with this set. Music exists for me in an elusive state, often at its best when discovered apart from any particular intention. I hope folks might find some dreams of their own in this music.” - Pat

Pat Metheny – Dream Box Tour

  • Sat, March 30 at 8:00pm

In Fall 2023, twenty-time Grammy Award-winning Guitarist & Composer Pat Metheny launched a solo tour which coincides with a new album release on BMG Modern Recordings, “Dream Box.” The tour, a first of its kind for Metheny, will feature personal and fan favorites from his nearly 50 year career.

Metheny says “A few years back, I did a short run of concerts that were not exclusively me and a single guitar, but pretty close. I loved it. Of course, I always have to take it somewhere else too, which by the end of those performances, I did manage to do (no spoilers here!), but what I have planned for the tour following the release of my new recording “Dream Box,” is something different for me, focused on the various ways of playing solo I have explored across all these decades in an evening that I think will be very special”.

Think about these recordings; “New Chautauqua” – a 1979 recording that almost single-handedly defined an era of instrumental steel-stringed “Americana; Zero Tolerance For Silence” – a shot across the bow of modern music making, the companion piece to parallel the Grammy-winning disc Secret Story; The Orchestrion Project, a project so outrageous in conception and execution that even a decade-plus later, it stands apart from any previous ideas of what a solo performer might achieve alone onstage.

And then consider and contrast those projects to the two back-to-back Grammy-winning solo Baritone guitar recordings, “One Quiet Night” and “What’s It All About.” Those recordings are not only among the most gorgeous pure solo guitar recordings, but they also introduced an entirely new tuning system that allowed Metheny to create an almost orchestral range from bass to soprano within the realm of a simple steel 6-string guitar.

PAT METHENY was born in Lee's Summit, MO on August 12, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility -a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues. With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional "jazz guitar" sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career, Pat Metheny has continued to redefine the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument.

Metheny's versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre.

As well as being an accomplished musician, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996). He has also taught music workshops all over the world, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music, and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also has been instrumental in the development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar, the 42-string Pikasso guitar, Ibanez’s PM series jazz guitars, and a variety of other custom instruments. It is one thing to attain popularity as a musician, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as "Best Jazz Guitarist" and awards, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking, Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition at one point winning seven consecutive Grammies for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included (along with Django Reinhardt, Charlie Chrisitan and Wes Montgomery) and it’s youngest member. Metheny has spent much of his life on tour, often doing more than 100 shows a year since becoming a bandleader in the 70’s. At the time of this writing, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.

Pat Metheny Dream Box

By Sam Sodomsky

Modern Recordings

July 5, 2023

First popularized by Chicago jazz singer Judy Roberts and recently resurrected on a compilation of obscure yacht-rock gems , Russ Long’s 1982 composition “Never Was Love” is a fascinating document of its time: as catchy and evocative as anything on Silk Degrees but played with a sophistication that suggests a smoky after-hours club as much as a crowded disco. Hearing these kinds of lost classics tends to invite a litany of questions: What happened to the mysterious figure behind its heartbroken words? What kept its songwriter from catching on beyond their regional scene?

Or if you’re Pat Metheny , you might ask: What would this sound like stripped down to just two sad, solitary electric guitars? The 68-year-old virtuoso’s rendition is a highlight on Dream Box , an understated set of new solo recordings that he compiled during downtime on tour buses and in hotel rooms around the world. On the road last year, Metheny sorted through a folder on his computer where he had stored these casual, off-hours experiments: cover songs, jazz standards, and new melodies captured as soon as they occurred to him. In the liner notes, Metheny describes the songs as “moments in time” more than proper compositions. “I have almost no memory of having recorded most of them,” he admits. “They just kind of showed up.”

For an artist whose name has become synonymous with sleek, smooth hyper-technicality—your guitar teacher’s favorite guitarist—Metheny remains underrated for his unending drive to experiment and challenge himself. While his feathery style on the fretboard remains as distinctive as his robust and permanently windswept mane, no two of his records involve quite the same approach, whether that means finding new collaborators, new instrumentation, or on releases like Dream Box , new ways to channel his creative process.

Like 1994’s Thurston Moore -approved noise excursion Zero Tolerance for Silence and 2003’s mournful, acoustic set One Quiet Night , Dream Box is the type of album Metheny makes when he doesn’t realize he’s making an album. Accordingly it drifts, retreats, and grounds itself mostly with negative space. Many of the songs feature just one guitar part, which he then accentuates with an overdubbed, improvised accompaniment. Favoring minor keys and loose sketches of melody, Metheny embraces the scattered, jetlagged genesis. This is music made for late nights and bleary eyes, wistful and half-awake.

The new compositions are highlights, tracing their central motifs to unexpected destinations. While some of Metheny’s best original work this century has spoken to his ambition as a composer (2005’s The Way Up ), his aim here is for simple but immersive mood-setting. After an introduction of electric guitar against chiming, slightly dissonant acoustic chords, the gorgeous “Ole & Gard” swiftly finds its feet and cycles through various settings to return to a recurring bluesy refrain. “From the Mountains” is more formless but just as memorable, navigating its eight-minute runtime with a dreamy sense of focus: The effect is like watching the sun rise over an unfamiliar city, new contours filling in as the light starts to spread.

The cover choices are equally distinctive, from his misty take on the bossa-nova standard “Morning of the Carnival” to the vinyl-only rendition of Miles Davis and Bill Evans ’ classic “Blue in Green.” And then there’s “Never Was Love,” a moody, propulsive interpretation that best encapsulates the album’s inspiration. Metheny has covered the song once before, contributing it to a compilation released after Russ Long’s death in 2006. The two share a home state of Missouri and played in a group together early in Metheny’s career, before their paths verged dramatically. One late night on the road, he might have been thinking about the strange journey he has taken, from a young prodigy accompanying Joni Mitchell to the closest thing jazz guitar has to an arena rock star all the way up to the present day, when he got to his hotel room, put on his headphones, listened back to some demos, and heard the beginnings of a story he had yet to tell.

Pat Metheny Dream Box Tour at the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts

Presented by the UB Center for the Arts

By CAS Staff

Release Date: June 27, 2023

The University at Buffalo Center for the Arts will present 20 time Grammy® Award Winning Guitarist and Composer Pat Metheny , who is launching a solo tour, coinciding with his new album release on BMG Modern Recordings, “ Dream Box ”. The tour, a first of its kind for Metheny, will feature personal and fan favorites from his nearly 50 year career. The performance will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre, located at the Center for the Arts, North Campus. Tickets are $45, $59, and $69.

“A few years back, I did a short run of concerts that were not exclusively me and a single guitar, but pretty close. I loved it," Metheny says. "Of course, I always have to take it somewhere else too, which by the end of those performances, I did manage to do (no spoilers here!), but what I have planned for the tour following the release of my new recording Dream Box, is something different for me, focused on the various ways of playing solo I have explored across all these decades in an evening that I think will be very special”.

Think about these recordings; “New Chautauqua” – a 1979 recording that almost single-handedly defined an era of instrumental steel-stringed “Americana”; “Zero Tolerance For Silence” – a shot across the bow of modern music making, the companion piece to parallel the Grammy® winning disc Secret Story; The Orchestrion Project, a project so outrageous in conception and execution that even a decade-plus later, it stands apart from any previous ideas of what a solo performer might achieve alone onstage.

And then consider and contrast those projects to the two back-to-back Grammy® winning solo Baritone guitar recordings, “One Quiet Night” and “What’s It All About”. Those recordings are not only among the most gorgeous pure solo guitar recordings, but they also introduced an entirely new tuning system that allowed Metheny to create an almost orchestral range from bass to soprano within the realm of a simple steel six-string guitar.

Tickets for Pat Metheny Dream Box Tour go on sale to the general public Thursday, June 29 at 12 p.m. Venue online presale tickets go on sale on Wednesday, June 28 at 10 a.m.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

2023 Dream Box

Label: bmg-modern recordings, musicians: pat metheny.

I hope folks might find some dreams of their own in this music.”
