In that time our trekking adventures have earned 4,000-plus online reviews, with more than 99% of those 5 stars. These reviews are also on third party review sites (Trip Advisor, Google, Trust Pilot…etc.) which has a much higher level of integrity than self-hosted reviews.

5. HAND PICKED ACCOMMODATIONS & GEAR

Our accommodations are carefully selected to provide a high quality pre-trek and post-trek lodging experience. On our treks, the lodging is in backcountry huts (“refugios”), or – on our Lodge-based Tour – at a wonderful, cozy lodge. And our gear is made by premier outdoor retail companies who specialize in outfitting hiking and camping enthusiasts.

2. ALWAYS SMALL GROUP TRIPS

Our Patagonia trips, like all of our hiking and backpacking tours, are always small groups. Our Patagonia Treks specifically are capped at 12 guests and 2-3 guides. This intimate group size allows us to better customize the experience for each guest, and it also enables our guests to get a deeper and more authentic cultural experience with the local guides.

Our Patagonia guides are some of the very best in the business. Local Chileans, they were carefully vetted, brought onto the Wildland team and trained to maintain our high standards. MORE ABOUT PATAGONIA HIKING VACATIONS

River and greenery in Patagonia

WHY A PATAGONIA HIKING TRIP?

Patagonia is in many ways the South American equivalent of Alaska – it’s a region characterized by vast wilderness; harsh winters; stunning, short summers; and breathtaking, extremely photogenic mountain scenery. Patagonia’s iconic landmarks are the soaring granite towers in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile and in Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina. Guided Patagonia hiking trips are wonderous adventures with glaciers, alpine lakes, waterfalls, unique wildlife, and cozy backcountry accommodations in the region’s “refugios.” Bottom line is if you like to hike and travel, Patagonia is a must-visit destination to add to your “Life List!”

THE WILDLAND HIKING EXPERIENCE

Our international trekking vacations are all-inclusive hiking packages that allow you to explore regions around the world without having to worry about many of the difficult logistics of international travel. We pick you up at the regional airport, provide lodging for the duration of the trek, and drop you back off at the airport on the final day. (If you’d like extra days in Patagonia before or after your trip, we’re happy to help you set that up as well.) We hand-pick unforgettable hiking routes and provide expert trekking guides with in-depth local knowledge and expertise. You can expect wonderful meals, fantastic accommodations that put you right in the action, and top-notch customer service!

TORRES DEL PAINE OR PARQUE PATAGONIA?

One question we receive relatively often from our Patagonia trekking guests is whether to hike Torres del Paine National Park or join us in Parque Patagonia . The answer is pretty straight forward – are you looking to have an iconic and relatively comfortable national park experience, or a pretty hardcore wilderness experience?

In Torres del Paine, we (for the most part) stay in Patagonia’s famous refugios, which are backcountry lodges with dorm-style sleeping, bathrooms, hot meals…etc. Trips in Torres del Paine National Park include the Torres del Paine W Trek , Torres del Paine O Circuit , Torres del Paine Basecamp Tour , and our Lodge-based Patagonia Hiking Tour (which stays in a cozy lodge outside the Park but in a perfect location).

Parque Patagonia, on the other hand, is a massive, recently-designated national park that is mostly deep wilderness and requires backpacking and camping. Not to worry though! The Wildland team has been operating guided backpacking trips since 2005 and are one of the world’s premier backpacking guide companies. We know how to make a trip comfortable, exciting and enriching. We offer one trip in Parque Patagonia right now, which is our Parque Patagonia Trek . Regardless which Patagonia trekking tour you choose, one thing’s for sure – it’s going to be an unforgettable adventure!

HIKE PATAGONIA WITH OR WITHOUT A GUIDE?

Patagonia hiking trips can be done with a guide company or on your own. Patagonia hiking companies like Wildland provide a variety of packages from very, very basic options to premier tours like Wildland’s which are all-inclusive. The value points of traveling with Wildland Trekking are many: the confidence and peace of mind that comes from traveling with a proven, premier trekking company; reservations, permits, and logistics are taken care of for you; worry-free adventure travel as you’re accompanied by expert, highly trained guides; exceptional meals and gear; in-depth knowledge of the local area, flora, fauna…etc. and more!

WHEN TO HIKE IN PATAGONIA

Being in the Southern Hemisphere, Chile has opposite seasons to North America and Europe. That makes their summer months December through February, and shoulder season months October-November and March-April. We heartily recommend trekking in Patagonia in the shoulder months if possible, as the crowds are much lighter than summertime, although the weather can certainly be a bit more spicy. Average temperatures and precipitation in Torres del Paine National Park during these months are detailed in this table:

Patagonia in February

February is one of the 3 summer months in Patagonia along with December and January. It is the busiest time of the year in the Parks and temperatures are also the warmest of the year (although it’s never warm in in this corner of the world). The sun also rises very early during this time of year, at around 5:00am and sundown can be as late as 10:00pm.

Patagonia in March

March is the first month of the fall in Patagonia and rewards travelers with beautiful colors as leaves begin to change color for the upcoming winter season. For photographers, this is one of the nicest times of the years to go as the landscape contrasts beautifully with the shades of reds, yellows and browns of the plant life. The winds of the earlier months start to die down and the larger crowds of the summer months also begin to diminish during this time of the year.

  • Average Air Temperature: 63ºF (17ºC)

Patagonia in April

During the month of April the colors of the trees around the Park start to get more dramatic as they prepare for the winter. For photographers, along with the months of April and May this is one of the nicest times of the years to go as the landscape contrasts beautifully with the shades of reds, yellows and browns of the plant life. There is a lot less wind during this time of year as compared to the summer months and crowds also begin to diminish.

  • Patagonia Wild Safari
  • Average Air Temperature: 56ºF (13ºC)

Patagonia in May

During the month of May the foliage colors around the park are very intense, making it a perfect time of year for photographers. There is also a lot less wind during this time of year as compared to the previous months, allowing for those beautiful photographs of the mountains reflecting on the perfectly still lakes around the Park. Puma sightings also become a lot more common during this month of the year as these big cats get ready for their favorite season of the year… winter.

  • Patagonia Untamed Puma Safari
  • Patagonia Hidden Safari
  • Average Air Temperature: 48ºF (9ºC)

Patagonia in June

June is the first month of the winter season in Patagonia; the season with the least amount of wind all year. It’s very common to have lots of days of big blue skies, and because there is no wind it can often feel warmer than Fall or even Summer months. For photographers, this is the most beautiful time of the year to visit Patagonia and it is much easier to spot elusive wildlife like Pumas and foxes.

  • Average Air Temperature: 39ºF (4ºC)

Patagonia in July

Landscapes are very different during these winter months in Patagonia, as both Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares National Parks get powdered with light snow at night. 95% of all the excursions offered during the summer months remain open during the winter, offering a whole new way to experience the wilds of Patagonia. It is also very common to see Pumas during this time of the year, making it the perfect season for our Puma Tracking and Wildlife Photo Safaris.

  • Patagonia Untamed Safari
  • Average Air Temperature: 38ºF (3ºC)

Patagonia in August

Both Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares National Parks get powdered with light snow at night, giving way to some of the most spectacular views in the morning right from your hotel. It is very common to see Pumas during this time of the year, making it the perfect season for our Puma Tracking and Wildlife Photo Safaris. For those looking to escape the heat in the Northern hemisphere, traveling to Patagonia during August as couples or with the family is the perfect getaway.

Patagonia in September

September is the first month of spring in Patagonia and the Parks are gorgeous during this time of the year. Many trees in Patagonia are evergreens, and the ones that lost their foliage begin to grow it back in September, thereby giving way to vivid green colors during this time of year. Puma sightings are still quite common during this time of the year, making it a perfect option for Puma Tracking tours, as weather starts to get warmer.

  • Patagonia Select Safari (Starting September 25)
  • Average Air Temperature: 50ºF (10ºC)

Patagonia in October

Spring is beautiful in Patagonia as the greens turn very vivid during these months and natural life recovers from the winter months, giving a renewed aspect to the entire region. Days also start getting longer in October and travelers start arriving in larger numbers to the parks.

  • Average Air Temperature: 58ºF (14ºC)

Patagonia in November

November is the last month of Spring in Patagonia and the Parks are extremely green as the summer approaches. Days are longer in November and the weather is very pleasant during the day, yet you still don’t have the larger crowds of the summer months in the Parks. This allows for some great outdoor adventures each day, with good weather and no crowds.

3. HOW MUCH DOES A TRIP TO PATAGONIA COST?

We often get asked about the cost of a trip to Patagonia, and the answer truly depends on the type of experience you're seeking. Factors that have an important influence on the price of your trip will include trip duration, quality of accommodations, time of year when you travel, quality of guides, inclusions and more. Below is a quick summary to give you an idea on how much you might budget for a tour in Patagonia. Costs exclude flights, which we briefly touch upon below.

There is a wide variety of trips and tour options available in Patagonia, but we have worked out an average per person cost per night for the different options.

Budget Trips: On budget or backpacker trips, you can expect to pay anywhere around $100 to $200 per person, per day for a Trekking trip in Patagonia. These trips normally require you to sleep in tents or very basic refuges as you trek around the different circuits of Patagonia’s Parks. Price includes meals.

Mid-Range Trips: On mid-range Patagonia trips, you can expect to pay anywhere between $250 to $350 per person, per day for a more upscale Trekking trip in Patagonia. On these trips you normally stay in good refuges or 3-star hotels around the Parks, and they don’t require you to sleep in tents. Price includes meals.

Luxury Trips: For a luxury Patagonia tour, or a tailor-made trip, you can expect to pay anywhere from $400 to $1000+ per person, per day. These are the top-of-the-line trips in Patagonia, where you stay at the finest hotels and enjoy excellent dining experiences. Most luxury hotels offer world-class spas and are all inclusive (bar, tips, excursions, meals, transfers, etc.)

International Flights: Reaching Patagonia requires first an international flight to Santiago, Chile, or Buenos Aires, Argentina. International flights from North America generally range between $600 and $1200 USD in Economy class, depending on the timing of your booking.

Domestic Flights: Additionally, a domestic flight from either Santiago or Buenos Aires to Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales, Chile, or from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, Argentina, can cost anywhere from $150 to $500 USD roundtrip, depending on the advance purchase.

Park Fees & Gratuities: Once in Patagonia, you'll encounter park fees to access renowned sites like Torres del Paine National Park in Chile or Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina. These fees vary seasonally, typically ranging from $20 to $50 USD for park access. In Argentina, the access is usually valid for the day, while in Chile, it extends up to 3 days. If you're staying at all-inclusive luxury lodges, park access is often included. We recommend you also consider funds for tips to Guides and hotel staff when visitinPatagonia. On budget trips, a standard tip is approximately $10 per day, while luxury trips may entail tips of around $20 to $30 per day. Learn more - How Much Does a Patagonia Trip Cost?

8. DO I HAVE TO BE A MOUNTAIN CLIMBER OR HIKER TO ENJOY PATAGONIA?

In Patagonia, there are activities for travelers of all ages (from 6 to 90), abilities, and interests. It is important to travel with an organization with enough flexibility, local knowledge, and connections to tailor your travel experience to your passions. With the right balance of excursions, anyone can enjoy the depths of Patagonia at your own pace.

Can you see yourself off-roading in your own all-terrain amidst turquoise lagoons and rolling pampas, and kayaking lakes where you can reach out to touch the icebergs? What about a boat navigation to a 2.6 million year old glacier, searching for fossils, tracking Patagonia Pumas, or taking a gentle hike to the home of a 7 ft prehistoric sloth? These are just a few ideas of activities you can experience during your Quasar safari.

In addition to our included safari activities, we have a Guide to Excursions so you can pick and choose additional activities or exchange the included excursions for new ones to further personalize your trip.
