Once you’ve had your fill of Georgetown’s culinary and cultural offerings, we head leave the coast and head for sleepy countryside of Balik Pulau, which is located inland and literally means back of the island.

Nestled in a peaceful valley famous for its Durian plantations (the smelly green fruit that so many visitors love), Balik Palau is the perfect contrast to the hustle and bustle of busy Georgetown.

Situated amongst green rice paddies and fruit plantations and a sprinkling of colonial-era buildings intermingled with traditional houses on stilts, Balik Pulau is a sleepy serene agriculture district that reveals the origins of some of Penang’s most famous foods.

Your trip begins with a drive along the stretch of Batu Ferringhi, where you can feast your eyes on white sandy beaches and luxurious beachfront resorts. The first stop will take you to the highly-visited Snake Temple. As you enter the temple, you will be greeted by the overwhelming scent of incense emanating from the giant incense burner. True to its name, the place of worship houses countless pit viper snakes relaxing on its trees and far away from the sight of worshippers. Follow it up with a trip to the Batik Factory and take a gander at the skilled craftsmen employ the age-old technique to produce the renowned Batik garments.

After a hearty lunch, you can proceed to the famous Kek Lok Si Temple. Also known as the temple of Supreme Bliss, the extraordinary Buddhist temple is a pilgrimage for Buddhists all over Southeast Asia. While there, take your time to admire the mesmerising bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, standing 30.2 meters tall. Moreover, endeavour to climb the Kek Lok Si Pagoda, known locally as Ban Po Thar, as it is a popular activity among visitors. Make your way through all the seven tiers designed in Chinese, Thai, and Burmese architectural styles. You will enjoy unrivalled panoramic views of George Town from the topmost floor. Next, ascend higher to the Penang Hill (or Bukit Bendera), 833 meters above sea level,as you take a funicular train ride. Bask in its glorious vistas, visit its many peaks, and capture its breath-taking views with a plethora of selfies. Lastly, you will arrive at the Harriston DIY Chocolate Workshops. Its collection of exciting varieties of chocolates infused with spices, herbs, and tropical fruits, a delight to all chocolate lovers. Learn all about the art of chocolate making and even try your hand at making your own chocolate creation.

Most of the ground are free to walk around there plenty of shade and places to sit down if you need a break from the sun(shaded obviously) you can pay 2ringgit to enter the rest of the ground which includes the viewing tower. There are two more Buddhist temples, besides Kek Lok Si, to visit in the tour. One is a Thai styl tmeple. The other Burma style . But Kek Lok Si is the main one and rightly so.You do need a car to go up to the main temple. This is a plus.Then we visited The Chew pier before we visit the other main site, the Khoo Kongsi.This sis a lavish community hall of the Khoo clan and is very worth visiting. The guide , Ah Shing, explained reasonably well and is also quite attentive to our need, eg he would start the car earlier so that it is cool down a bit in this hot weather.Howeer, there are four things that the tour need to improve. First, it should arrange a brief lunch. It is unreasonable to expect one could last from 10am to 3 pm without eating something. Second, a bottle of water should bee provided . Simple thing, I know. But it is not done.Third. Given the importance of Buddhism in the local history, I feel the guide do not know enough in this area. She is very engaging and informative. She is only very helpful and pleasant. The trail in Habitat was very nice and the occasionally swings stationed along the trail makes resting more pleasant and sweer. The children enjoyed the zipline and it is not to be miss. Great fun for children and family. For younger children, they can pair with their parents - great bonding, great memory. The steamboat is disappointing but the view is spectacular. The locations we explored were nothing short of spectacular, offering us a diverse palette of experiences that ranged from the serenity of lush jungles to the vibrant nightlife on picturesque islands. The balance between exhilarating hikes and lively parties was just right, ensuring that every day was filled with new adventures and opportunities to create lasting memories. A significant part of this trip's charm was the fantastic group of fellow travelers I had the fortune to journey with. It's rare to find such a harmonious blend of personalities and backgrounds, but we clicked instantly, transforming a group of strangers into lifelong friends. The camaraderie that developed amongst us added a whole new layer of enjoyment to the experience. A special shoutout is deserved for our CEO, Fon, whose expertise, passion, and warm personality made her not just a guide, but a true friend. Her dedication to ensuring that we all had an incredible time was evident in every aspect of the trip. Fon, you are a gem, and your efforts were genuinely appreciated by all of us! However, no adventure is without its lessons. The pace of the tour, while exhilarating, sometimes felt a bit rushed. Extending the itinerary by a day or two could provide a more relaxed pace, allowing for some much-needed rest days amidst the action-packed schedule. For travelers like myself, towering over 185cm, be prepared for a squeeze, especially on the night trains which proved to be quite the challenge. An additional note for future adventurers: consider booking an extra night in Singapore to fully explore the wonders this city has to offer. The tour's conclusion in Singapore feels like just the beginning of another adventure waiting to be discovered. Great tour! Good combination of nature and city, easy days and active days. Lots of travelling days, which was the only downside, but that’s the only way to do all that we did.
