Why do so many pga tour players live in one small florida golf mecca it started with jack nicklaus., share this article.

Keegan Bradley was born in Woodstock, Vermont. The perfect spot for his first sports crush: Ski racing.

Bradley, an elite skier, decided to pursue golf as a teen, probably much to the delight of his aunt and World Golf Hall of Famer, Pat Bradley. But an area that sees 82 inches of snow annually with an average high temperature of 37 degrees for five months is not good for a game not meant to be played on the frozen tundra. So Bradley started a slow migration south, spending his senior year in high school in Hopkinton, Mass., attending St. John’s University in New York, before making the big move and deciding there was just one place to settle for a blossoming star on the PGA Tour.

“I don’t think anywhere in the world they have what we have here in Jupiter,” said Bradley, 35, a four-time winner of the PGA Tour, including the 2011 PGA Championship.

This is a story that can be repeated over and over: Golfer grows up in cold country; spends too many late fall and winter days shivering on hard, brown courses; realizes the only way to further the career is to find the perfect spot where greens are, well, green year-round.

Every search leads them back to one area of the country: Palm Beach County.

Whether it’s Jupiter or Jupiter Island, Palm Beach Gardens or North Palm Beach, Delray Beach or Boca Raton, this area is to golf what Silicon Valley is to technology.

This is the mecca for golf royalty.

MORE: Is Phil Mickelson moving to Jupiter? That’s the plan.

“All these golfers have the luxury of being able to live wherever they want, and they recognize Jupiter, northern Palm Beach County has the greatest lifestyle,” said Jupiter mayor Todd Wodraska. “(There’s) great golf courses and the ability to have a boat in your backyard. … Those guys recognize it’s pretty spectacular here.”

More than 30 active members of the regular PGA Tour – and many more men and women professionals – call the area home. From Tiger Woods (and soon Phil Mickelson) in Jupiter Island to Gary Woodland in Delray Beach. Half of the top 10 in the current World Golf Rankings and more than 20 in the top 100 live in the area.

Among those is No. 8 and four-time major winner Brooks Koepka and No. 16 Daniel Berger. Koepka and Berger are the two most recognizable names who did not need to google the area and arrange for their belongings to be shipped across state lines. Both were raised in Palm Beach County, now live in Jupiter and continue to greet their peers making the move to their hometown.

Then there are the retired legends led by the Godfather of Golf, Jack Nicklaus, along with those on the back nine of their professional careers and regulars on the Tour Champions.

Want to put together an old-timers match? Here’s a list of Hall of Famers/major winners who could jump in their car to join: Ernie Els (the baby of the group at 51), Greg Norman, Nick Price, Bernhard Langer, Raymond Floyd and Mark Calcavecchia. Nicklaus and Gary Player – both in their 80s – could pick sides. All live in the Jupiter area with the exception of Langer, a longtime resident of Boca Raton.

That’s 81 major championship trophies or jackets on the PGA Tour belonging to golfers either living in the area or planning to arrive soon among the two groups.

Jack Nicklaus started it 55 years ago

Jack and Barbara Nicklaus moved to Palm Beach County in 1966, settling in North Palm Beach. Jack already was 17 PGA Tour wins into his career, including four majors, and that year won the Masters and The Open Championship.

Jack and Barbara founded the Bear’s Club in Jupiter 22 years ago and it has become the hotbed for local professionals. Currently, 30 pros are members of the club.

Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay are among the members who Nicklaus said have sought his advice.

“I don’t go out and seek this, but I am available,” Jack said. “I’ve always felt like I might have some knowledge – you might call it wisdom I don’t know whether it is or not. I might have something to impart to the kids that might help them and I’m delighted to supply that to any one of them.”

Speaking to Jack Nicklaus about golf … that certainly is knowledge. Need proof? Nicklaus said he spoke with Cantlay about playing his course at Muirfield Village two years ago before the Memorial Tournament. What’s happened since? Cantlay won the event soon after that first conversation with Jack in 2019 and again this week, which pushed him to No. 7 in the world.

How many golf courses in Palm Beach County?

As the area was booming around the turn of the century, so too was its reputation for golf. Not only does Florida boast the most golf courses in the country with more than 1,250, but Palm Beach has the most of any county in the country with more than 160.

Add to that the weather, lifestyle and a significant reason that goes unspoken – tax breaks – and the movement has been well underway.

“I knew I needed to come somewhere warm year-round,” Thomas said. “I had a bunch of buddies here. I wanted to be around people that were going to make me better. I wanted to be able to play with great players. That’s been the biggest benefit.

“I can’t see myself living anywhere else at least if I want to continue to play golf.”

Thomas is ranked No. 2 in the world behind Johnson, No. 1 for the past 10 months. Johnson recently sold his Palm Beach Gardens estate for $16.5 million, $11.5 million more than he purchased it for in 2015, and moved to Harbour Isles in North Palm Beach. Johnson won the 2016 U.S. Open and 2020 Masters.

Thomas and Rickie Fowler live on the same street and are as close as any Tour pros in the area. Fowler has lived in Jupiter for more than 11 years and he has witnessed professionals from all levels streaming to the area.

“There’s always guys to play with, there’s always good games, and that’s something I’ve always enjoyed … being around guys that I can compete against and help push each other to be better,” Fowler said.

While the old “iron sharpens iron” theory probably works, it’s not necessarily for everyone. Shane Lowry, the 2019 Open champion and native of Ireland, was hooked on the area after playing the Honda Classic in 2014. After renting for four years, he closed on a home in Jupiter in the spring.

For Lowry, it was not as much his neighbors, but the neighborhoods that attracted him to Palm Beach County.

“It’s Palm Beach … Jupiter literally has everything,” he said. “It’s got good weather, great golf courses, great practice facilities. That’s why we’re here. We’re not here because everyone else is here. It just so happens that everybody comes here because it’s the best weather during the winter, the best practice.”

If Tiger Woods builds it, they will come

Tiger Woods’ connection to the area started 15 years ago, when he was living in Orlando. In 2006, the 15-time major winner (second to Nicklaus’ 18) spent $38 million on a 13,700-square-foot home that sits on a 10-acre parcel stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal on Jupiter Island in southeast Martin County.

“I miss the ocean,” he said at the time. “Being in Orlando … there’s a bunch of lakes, but it’s not the ocean.”

The purchase reportedly was at the urging of his wife at the time, Elin Nordegren. Tiger made Jupiter Island his permanent address in 2011 after the couple divorced.

By then, a smattering of Tour pros already had preceded him, including Luke Donald, Bradley, Johnson and Fowler. But many more would follow. McIlroy, the four-time majors winner, arrived in 2013, first living in Palm Beach Gardens. In 2018, he bought Ernie Els’ 17,000-square-foot estate in the Bear’s Club.

Next up is Mickelson, the recent PGA Championship winner. Mickelson is being tight-lipped about his potential move to Jupiter Island from California but recently said “the plan” is to move here.“ A lot of great things around the area,” was all he would say.

“A lot of the guys went to Orlando first,” said Donald, who was living in Chicago before relocating in 2006. “And then from Orlando they seem to come to Palm Beach County.”

Specifically, northeast Palm Beach County, but with a few exceptions. Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open Champion, was born in Topeka, Kansas, and attended the University of Kansas. He decided about a decade ago a move was necessary. He chose Delray Beach.

“I see everybody every week, I don’t want to see them when I’m home,” he said, smiling. “We always travel together. So I see them all the time.”

Woodland trains in Miami and wanted to be in south county. “We fell in love with Delray,” he said. “I don’t ever see leaving that place.”

‘For golf pros, this is heaven’

Professional golfers will settle for nothing but the best when it comes to facilities. Luxurious clubhouses, pristine fairways and immaculate greens are as important to them as finding the right accountant, caddie and chef.

And part of the lure is area courses.

While Nicklaus has made Bear’s Club a go-to destination, others such as Dye Preserve, Medalist, Turtle Creek and Michael Jordan’s The Grove XXIII, which opened in 2019, could host practice rounds featuring top players in the world any day of the week.

“Any given day, there are the favorable golf courses where games are being played at anytime,” said Jeff Leishman, a PGA Tour coach out of Dye Preserve who coached Berger for 12 years. About 20 pros from the PGA, Champions and LPGA tours are members at Dye Preserve.

Leishman called those games money matches. “We joked we were possibly giving out world ranking points,” he said.

Denny McCarthy, who moved to Jupiter in 2014 after graduating from the University of Virginia, said these practice rounds help “get those competitive juices flowing in an off week.”

“I’m such a competitor, so even for a small money game, I get up to play,” he said.

“Small money” is relative. Locals who continue to play the regular Tour have made nearly $1 billion combined on the course. That does not include outside ventures, which adds up to hundreds of millions more.

With so many world-class venues to chose from, several are members or play out of multiple clubs like Berger (Dye Preserve and Bear’s Club), Thomas (Bear’s Club and Medalist), Bradley (Bear’s Club and The Grove), Fowler (Medalist and Turtle Creek), Johnson (Bear’s Club and The Grove), McIlroy (Bear’s Club and The Grove), Donald (Bear’s Club and The Grove).

Woodland plays out of Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach, which Ben Hogan once called “the best course I have ever seen” and where Sam Snead was once a member.

“Other parts of the country or world, it’s pretty shocking when a tour player is at their course,” Bradley said. “But down here it’s very normal. The practice facilities are set up for us, we get to hit our own balls on the range.

“For golf pros, this is heaven.”

And they not only can be seen on the courses, but dining at restaurants or popping into their favorite Starbucks or watching their kids on a local ball field.

It all happens in Palm Beach County.

“At least once a week,” Jupiter’s Lucas Glover said. “For the most part, we frequent the same places, grocery stores, everything within five, six miles in Jupiter.”

Wodraska has been the Jupiter mayor since 2016. He’s become friends with Ryan Armour, who blends in like any other dad watching his sons’ games.

“In Jupiter, certainly the secret has been out for some time now,” Wodraska said. “I think they’re comfortable being out and about. When they’re here, they’re home. And home is being comfortable and finding your favorite restaurant and finding your favorite place to grab a cup of coffee so you don’t have to be hounded by autograph seekers.”

And no place is more welcoming and comfortable than The Woods Jupiter. Tiger’s flagship restaurant offers privacy and protection from celebrity seekers and has held several celebrations, including Thomas’ 2017 PGA Championship and Fowler’s and Thomas’ Honda Classic titles in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

All of which can be a huge boon to the area. The migration of not just great PGA pros but those from the LPGA tour along with other iconic athletes and entertainers makes the golf phenomenon happening in our area a Chamber of Commerce dream.

Realtor Brian Coffey of One Sotheby’s International has seen the benefits.

“I think it is a selling point,” he said. “If these people that could afford to live anywhere have chosen the Jupiter area and Palm Beach area to live, why wouldn’t I want to be around them.

“They are smart, very successful people. They can live anywhere they want. They’re living here. The homework’s been done for them.”

Top Florida Golf Trips

With the PGA Tour currently in its annual Florida swing, you’ll be thinking about scheduling our next Florida golf trip. Here are the top places to look for when planning a trip to Florida on our next Golf venture.

📌Jacksonville

The state’s largest and most populous city is home to some of the state’s most famous and known golf courses, including the No. 2 public course in the state and the No. 11 public course in the country. So you will indeed have a memorable experience swinging your shots in the golf courses in Jacksonville.

Tumbling over undulating terrain, stunning landforms, huge lakes, and stretches of open savannah, Streamsong Red, placed 112th on Golf Digest’s and also second 100 Greatest courses, necessitates a good approach to tackle one dramatic Coore-Crenshaw-designed hole after another.

The World’s Theme Park Capital is also home to several excellent golf courses. These courses are sure to be a thrill ride, whether on a family trip or, even better, a golf-only excursion.

Apart from the well-known magnificence of Doral, Miami is dotted with courses ideal for a round before the day at the beach or a night on the town.

📌Palm Beach

This seaside town has lots of terrific golf, but four of the top 75 courses in Florida, according to a 2015 Golf Digest study, are located on the PGA National property. In addition, the Honda Classic is held every year on the Champion Course, one of five courses at PGA National.

The excellent golf courses in Naples, Florida, are nestled among the Florida pines. Most courses take advantage of the natural environment to create undulating greens and waste areas of crushed quartz sand. When you visit the location, each golf session will be unique.

📌Panama City

You might think of Panama City as a Spring Break getaway, but it’s also one of Florida’s most stealthily low-cost golf locations, with some must-play courses. There are no visible residences on this Florida course, and there are few flat lays.

Things You Should Do Before Playing a Round of Golf

If you don’t prepare, you’re setting yourself up to fail, as the saying goes. However, incorporating these suggestions into your pre-round routine gives you the best chance of playing well.

✔️Good Sleep

When it comes to golf, sleep is crucial, and you don’t want to be playing when hungover.

✔️Create a Strategy

If it’s your home club, you probably know where to go, where not to go, and which clubs to hit like the back of your hand. However, we still recommend writing it down and planning how you intend to attack the golf course.

When you arrive at the range, it is critical to stretch before hitting any golf balls. And this will warm up the muscles and get them nice and loose, which will help you make the golf swing athletically and prevent injuries.

✔️Clean Clubs

Dirty golf clubs can significantly negatively impact your performance, particularly when generating spin-on approach shots into greens and finesse shots. As a result, you’ll want to keep your clubs as clean as possible.

✔️Plan the day

You don’t want to be rushing around and frazzled before getting to the club and golf course. As a result, organize your day carefully. Allow plenty of time to go to the club and complete your whole preparation before teeing off.

✔️Eat and Hydrate

What you eat and drink significantly influences how you feel both on and off the golf course. So you must eat well and remain hydrated both before and throughout the round.

✔️Hitting the Ball

When it comes to hitting the shots before the course, avoid using the driver. Start with a wedge since it is a simpler swing to make and helps you to ease yourself into the workout.

Things to Keep in Mind When Swinging a Golf Club

There are hundreds of things that novices attempt to remember while initially learning to swing a golf club. In addition, the quantity of white noise in their heads is a continual source of distraction, irritation, and knowledge.

This list is general, and you may find it helpful as you work on improving your golf game.

❕Set your Feet Apart at a Comfortable Distance

It is ideal for keeping the distance between your shoulders at around shoulder width. Remember to keep your left foot slightly open, with your toes to the left of your heel.

❕In your Stance, Bring the Ball Forward

The ball should be in line with your left heel while using longer clubs, such as your driver.

❕Maintain Your Composure

One of the most common problems for novices is that their head moves much too much throughout their golf swing. Many people advise beginners to keep their heads down, yet this advice is deceptive. Our heads move somewhat during a golf swing, but the less movement we have, the better.

❕Count to One While Keeping your Attention on the Point of Touch

This step’s goal is to concentrate on the point of contact between the ball and the club. Furthermore, when counting to one, you maintain your head motionless and allow the rest of your body to finish the swing before searching for your ball.

❕Follow Through with Vigour

Make sure your hands follow through high and come to rest on the left side towards the nape of your neck. You must finish your swing with a beautiful high finish.

❕Less is More in this Case

Most amateurs have a predisposition to overswing. This is because they must strive to swing their club as quickly as possible, and this added effort leads the golfer to lose balance when swinging.

Top Golfers from each State: Florida Golf and Brooks Koepka

By kasey kuhrts | may 28, 2020.

FARMINGDALE, NEW YORK - MAY 19: Brooks Koepka of the United States poses with the Wanamaker Trophy during the Trophy Presentation Ceremony after winning the final round of the 2019 PGA Championship at the Bethpage Black course on May 19, 2019 in Farmingdale, New York. (Photo by Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images)

The sunshine state is home to many of the game’s biggest Florida Golf legends. From Jack, Tiger, and Rory, along with so many others, Florida is their adopted home. But none of those legendary players were actually born in Florida, which is why we are giving the nod to Brooks Koepka.

Born in West Palm Beach, and a three-time All American at Florida State University, Brooks Koepka has been a Florida boy all his life. When looking at other golfers who were born in the state of Florida, it was hard to even argue any of them should make this list over Brooks.

In 2017, our own contributor Mike Randleman published a single article ranking the top golfer in each state. On his list, he selected David Duval as the top golfer born in Florida, a solid choice. However, the article was published 12 days after Brooks Koepka won his first major championship, and a lot has changed since then.

As mentioned above, Brooks Koepka captured his first major in 2017 winning the U.S. Open at Erin Hills. Although Brooks had turned pro in 2012, this was only his second career PGA Tour win. And although he didn’t collect a PGA Tour win until a little over two and a half years of being a professional, Brooks started winning overseas almost immediately after turning pro.

Brooks joined the Challenge Tour in 2012 after he turned pro and won four Challenge Tour events in less than a year. In 2014 Brooks won his first Euro Tour event at the Turkish Airlines Open, and the win is still his only Euro Tour win that isn’t a major or WGC event.

In 2016, Koepka was a member of the victorious 2016 Ryder Cup team. Brooks had a strong showing, going 3-1-0, earning three points, and only Patrick Reed contributed more points for the team at 3.5. Many golf fans believe the 2016 Ryder Cup put Brooks Koepka on the map, which is why it wasn’t that surprising when Brooks lifted the U.S. Open Championship trophy the following June.

Brooks finished his 2017 season by helping the United State capture the Presidents Cup at Liberty National. Brooks contributed two points to the team, going 2-2-0.

Brooks would go 364 days before his next PGA Tour win, as he won back to back U.S. Open’s in 2017 and 2018. This made Koepka the first player since Hall of Famer Curtis Strange in 1989 to go back to back in the U.S. Open. Following the 2018 U.S. Open, Brooks only waited two months before getting his next win, this time at Bellerive in the 2018 PGA Championship.

Brooks followed up the two major wins winning only his second PGA Tour event that’s not a major or WGC, by winning the CJ Cup in October of 2018.

Which brings us to last season. Brooks finished no lower than fourth in any of the season’s majors and defended his PGA Championship title at Bethpage Black. Going for the three-peat at the U.S. Open, Brooks finished three strokes back in a solo second to Gary Woodland.

Brooks captured his second, and last, 2019 win at the WGC-Fed Ex St. Jude. This was enough for Brooks to end the season atop the Fed Ex Cup rankings, but after finishing outside the top 20 at the Northern Trust and the BMW, Brooks finished the season third in the standings.

Now, as we wait for the 2020 season to resume, we wonder what is next for Brooks Koepka. Will he be able to complete a three-peat of the PGA Championship at Harding Park? Will he outdo his 2019 tie for second at the Masters and leave himself only one major shy of the grand slam? Or will he do the unthinkable, and win a PGA Tour event that isn’t a major?

Either way, being a four-time major champion, WGC winner, Ryder and President cup winner, along with racking up over 30 million dollars in career earnings, there should be little debate that Brooks Koepka is, and will continue to be the best golfer born in the Sunshine State.

It’s dinnertime in Jupiter, Fla., and 1000 North is the place to be. The restaurant opened in 2018 and immediately became a nexus of German engineering, Italian tailoring and South Beach plastic surgery. Jutting into the Loxahatchee River is a private dock so that diners can arrive in style; Dustin Johnson has been known to cruise up in his 82-foot Viking. (The lounge upstairs, available only to the 300 members who pay $4,000 to join and $4,000 in annual dues, carries Fireball cinnamon whisky to whet the whistle of Johnson and his glamorous fiancee, Paulina Gretzky.)

Michael Jordan gets a lot of attention for being a part owner, but the man behind the man is Ira Fenton, a low-key powerbroker who helped finance Jack Nicklaus’ The Bear’s Club across town. That private golf club has about three dozen elite tour pros as members, and its popularity helped inspire 1000 NORTH when Fenton sought to replicate the clubby atmosphere and first-rate service of The Bear’s Club. “If you put together a tournament with just our restaurant’s investors, you’d have a very strong field,” Fenton said recently over a decadent meal, interrupting himself often to greet by name the servers and hosts, all of whom had the fresh-scrubbed good looks of Abercrombie models. Those investors include Johnson, Ernie Els, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Luke Donald, Keegan Bradley and Camilo Villegas. “It’s a fun thing to be a part of,” Bradley says, “and it guarantees you can get a table on a Friday night, which is getting harder these days.”

Jupiter’s popularity has solidified its standing as the center of the golf universe. Educated guesses place the number of pro golfers of varying status in the area at five dozen. Set to join them is the consummate California dude, Phil Mickelson, who bought a place on Jupiter Island, where he and wife Amy will feather their empty nest (and enjoy the benefits of no state income tax, which Phil has long desired).

When Jordan wanted to create his private 18-hole fiefdom, the Jupiter area was the only place he considered. The result is Grove XXIII, which opened in 2019 and is already the gathering spot for stars from various sports who indulge in jocular money games and other rituals of male bonding . Grove is in horse country about 15 miles from The Bear’s Club, farther north than was once considered fashionable. But its mystique helped inspire Steve Ross, the owner of the Miami Dolphins, to purchase 1,200 nearby acres, on which he is reputedly planning to build three private courses. It’s a good bet, given that every club in town has a long waiting list, and in the COVID era, well-heeled northerners continue to arrive in droves. The Wall Street Journal reported that Palm Beach, half an hour to the south, has had 35 homes sell for at least $30 million since March 2020, with two eclipsing $100 million. Jupiter, which has not one but three tiki bars clustered around its iconic lighthouse, is beachier than Palm Beach, which Luke Donald describes as “more old money, more swanky, more stuffy.” But with almost no available inventory, the high-end home prices around Jupiter have similarly spiked; Greg Norman sold Tranquility, his eight-acre spread on Jupiter Island, for $55 million. (The season in South Florida used to be October through April, but many new arrivals are staying year-round, beating the summer heat by playing golf early in the morning.)

RELATED:  An inside look at Michael Jordan's new course, The Grove XXIII

North Palm Beach is home to venerable Seminole, but that’s not a place where tour players hang out. Old-timers Ray Floyd and Nick Price are the only pro golfers among the membership. In Jupiter, The Bear’s Club has long been a popular spot, with many tour pros living on the premises. In 2017, Rory McIlroy bought Ernie Els’ 13,000-square-foot house for low eight figures and then did an extensive remodel.

The practice facility at The Bear’s Club is legendary, with each pro enjoying buckets of his or her preferred model of golf ball, which are meticulously sorted by the staff. Nicklaus recently reworked the par-3 course. “You can tell when a big tournament is coming because the range is packed,” says Jessica Korda, one of a dozen or so LPGA Tour players who make their home around Jupiter and often practice side by side with the guys. If The Bear’s Club is where players go to work on their game, Medalist is the place to test themselves against each other. DJ and Rickie are regulars, and it was Tiger Woods’ preferred place before his car crash in 2021. The Grove has a spectacular practice facility, but it’s more about the hang. The sleek clubhouse has a dizzying number of TVs, and the real ballers drink Cincoro Extra Añejo from Jordan’s personal tequila company. A 750-millileter bottle retails for $1,800. (Mickelson, the game’s preeminent raconteur, has already joined the Grove.) Those are the big three among the Jupiter area’s private clubs, but there are a bunch of other notable spots: the swank Floridian, which is more to the north but still popular with tour players; classy Old Palm, which has traditionally been the landing spot for European Tour expats; secluded McArthur, which is joining the building frenzy with a new second course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw; and Jupiter Hills, a 1970 George Fazio design that, like many Jupiter residents of a certain age, has had a lot of work done.

All of these courses are private, which means Jupiter will never be a destination for golf tourists. But it is a kind of fantasy camp for the surgeons and stockbrokers at the clubs who get to rub elbows with golf greatness. “If some 18-handicapper asks me how to play a certain shot, I’m always happy to help them,” Johnson says. “You never know what kind of advice they’ll be able to give you in their profession.” Plenty of these deep-pocketed duffers like to engage tour players in money games, but details are always scarce. “If there were any great stories of guys playing for huge money—and I’m not saying there are—you wouldn’t hear about them,” Bradley says. “There’s kind of an honor system to keep things private.”

RELATED: We got some of Jupiter's biggest powerbrokers together for a very elaborate photo shoot

For tour pros, Jupiter is the ultimate playground. “I can’t live anywhere else now,” says Bradley, a Jup resident for more than a decade. “The courses are so good, and the practice facilities are the best in the world. I can show up any day of the week to a handful of courses and get a game against tour winners, major-championship winners, future Hall of Famers. Obviously, the weather is perfect, and the lifestyle is great. But if the goal is to keep my game razor sharp when I’m home, I can’t get done what I need to get done anywhere else in the world.”

If one house symbolizes the glamour and impetuousness of #JupLife, it is a sleek bit of American Dream on River Drive, with a backyard that spills out onto the Loxahatchee River and a private dock. Bradley bought the house after winning the 2011 PGA Championship and later sold it to Brooks Koepka, who had U.S. Open champ Graeme McDowell’s wife, Kristin, an interior decorator, redo the inside in a style that could be called macho chic: lots of stone and metal with pastel touches. When I visited in late 2017, the garage was a riot of kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, and the walk-in wine room was a nice spot for Koepka’s glittering U.S. Open trophy. As he continued to pile up major-championship victories, Koepka moved to a gaudier place on a bigger, more private lot, selling the house to yet another tour mainstay, Daniel Berger. After winning at Colonial last year, Berger bought a Bahama 41 speedboat to park out back. (What Teslas are to Pebble Beach, the Bahama 41 is to Jupiter.)

PRO GOLF’S TROPICAL PLAYGROUND

Jupiter, Florida, the de facto capital of professional golf, is 90 miles north of Miami, 155 miles southeast of Orlando and about 55 nautical miles from the Bahamas. There are 16 golf courses in Jupiter and another 78 within 20 miles of the town, the vast majority of them private. But for the 60-plus members of the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour who call Jupiter home, the eight golf clubs that really matter are (from top) Floridian, McArthur, Medalist, Grove XXIII, Jupiter Hills Club, Bear’s Club, Seminole and Old Palm. The restaurant, 1000 NORTH, which opened in 2018 and counts Michael Jordan as part owner, has emerged as a gathering spot for golf’s elite. Several PGA Tour players are investors, members or both.

If Berger can cash a few more oversize checks, he might be able to cross the river to the west side, where Pennock Point Road is the most prized address. That’s where Fowler and Justin Thomas live. Johnson lived there for a long stretch, too, while he was building a modernist Xanadu farther up the river. “It’s a small world,” Johnson once told me. “I’ll be in the backyard chipping, and Rickie will cruise by on a paddle board. Or I’ll be in the boat and see JT or [longtime tour player Steve] Marino messing around at their place. You just kind of wave and keep going. You see them around town sometimes doing normal things. I’ll say, ‘Hey.’ We don’t talk about golf or anything like that.” (As cliquey as it can be, not every pro manages to fit in; Matthew Wolff recently decamped from Jupiter, buying a house in his old college town of Stillwater, Okla. “There’s not a lot of people my age down there,” says Wolff, 22.)

The biggest and most extravagant golfer’s house in the area is Woods’ 12-acre compound on Jupiter Island, extending from the Intercoastal all the way to the Atlantic, with a famed backyard practice area. His arrival is a key moment on Jupiter’s timeline, which begins in 1966 when Jack Nicklaus—fleeing Ohio’s harsh winters and lured by the bountiful deep-sea fishing—settled at Lost Tree Club in what is now considered North Palm Beach. That immediately made South Florida a thing. (Cary Middlecoff soon moved down the street.) In the early 1990s, the second wave of big-time golfers arrived, led by Greg Norman and Nick Price, who took turns as the game’s dominant forces of that era. Norman built a macho club in his image, Medalist, though he hasn’t come around as much since disputes about course alterations and losing control of the board. Price built McArthur, which reflects his more refined sensibilities.

BOOMTOWN Rory McIlroy, Ernie Els and Brooks Koepka are among the dozens of top tour players attracted to the Jup lifestyle.

Jesper Parnevik settled in the area, luring a cadre of fellow Swedes, but Orlando remained the golf world’s center of gravity, especially after Woods established residency upon turning pro in 1996. Orlando’s hegemony was cemented in the popular imagination by the annual Tavistock Cup, a monument to excess that pitted the glittering names from two of O-town’s warring golf clubs, Isleworth and Lake Nona. Landlocked and touristy, Orlando had only one real appeal: an international airport. But in 1999, the tour’s new TV contract kicked in, having been negotiated in the wake of Woods’ game-changing Masters victory. Previously unimaginable riches flowed into the sport. Private jets that had once been the province of only the biggest stars were suddenly within reach of the tour’s middle class. (In 1998, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway acquired NetJets and quickly reshaped the private-aviation industry, and the company would sign three dozen players as “ambassadors.”) With tour pros no longer tethered to the Orlando airport, they began migrating toward the ocean, like salmon. (Those who have stayed in Orlando skew European because they can fly nonstop to the Continent on commercial airlines given that going private across the ocean is a big ticket.) The jet center at tiny Palm Beach airport (PBI) quickly became a de facto PGA Tour clubhouse, and when the cost of a private jet is split among five or six golfers, it becomes almost defensible.

Woods famously wooed one of Parnevik’s nannies, a cosmopolitan law student (and, yes, former bikini model) named Elin Nordegren, who made it clear she had zero interest in living in Orlando. In 2006—two years after the splashy wedding—Tiger paid $40 million for his sprawling estate. He tore down the existing structures and built his dream house, complete with two swimming pools, a home gym and an oxygen therapy room. (By the time construction was finished so, too, was Woods’ marriage.) Seeking to put his branded stamp on the neighborhood, he opened his restaurant in 2015. The Woods Jupiter aspires to be a high-brow sports bar, though the prices suggest Peter Luger; the 10-ounce filet mignon is $53. Unlike the sleekly dressed staff at 1000 NORTH, the waitresses and bartenders at The Woods are a scrappy bunch who look like they have lived a little. In 2017, Tiger became romantically involved with the restaurant manager, Erica Herman, and they have settled into a contented domesticity.

Tiger also nabbed professional golf ’s biggest boat, a 155-footer he named Privacy. As the name suggests, Woods uses his yacht to get away from it all. The water is at the center of #JupLife. Many of the restaurants have private docks, and reservations are encouraged—for the boats more than the humans. Johnson and Donald are among a group of enthusiastic chasers of marlin, sailfish and mahi. “Berger thinks he’s good, but when we’ve gone out, he’s caught nothing, so I’ll believe it when I see it,” woofs Donald.

Of course, some of Berger’s best work comes without a rod in hand when he is “boating”—the local parlance for hanging out at sand bars with hot women and cold beverages. (The most popular sand bar juts off Jupiter Island and is known as Tiger Beach because Woods’ house is about 1,000 feet away, though he is never glimpsed behind the towering hedges.) The popular imagination of Jupiter as a sexy, sudsy place comes largely from the social media feeds of three extremely photogenic and often scantily clad influencers: Gretzky, Jena Sims (Koepka’s fiancé) and Tori Slater (Berger’s girlfriend). Their beaus make occasional cameos in their posts, offering stiff dance moves, doing backflips off their boats or, in Koepka’s case, wearing sneakers and an untucked t-shirt on even the fanciest occasions. It’s hard to argue with Donald, who says, “This place is a bit like Fantasyland.”

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/11/GD0821_Feat_Juplife_03.jpg

HAPPY HOUR It wouldn’t be a stretch to find Koepka, his fiancee, Jena Sims, and McIlory mingling at 1000 NORTH’s exclusive lounge.

Like any town, Jupiter is cleaved by its haves and have-nots. The area’s young, aspiring pros are not investors in 1000 NORTH but regulars at the Square Grouper, a tiki joint with leathery dudes behind the bar pouring Creamsicles, which are made with whipped-cream vodka, orange juice and cream. They taste like your childhood, plus a dash of regret. The mini-tour rabbits can’t afford (and are not invited) to join the glamorous clubs, so they congregate at Abacoa, Bear Lakes, Ironhorse, Seagate and other less-fancy joints that will cut them a deal on mini-memberships. The cost of living is so high that sharing apartments is common, though in a new twist on chain migration, players who make it to the big leagues will sometimes lend a hand; when Dominic Bozzelli made a better life for himself on the PGA Tour, he allowed his friend Gavin Hall to live in his house for two years, rent-free. “He knows how hard it is to make it and was nice enough to help me out,” says Hall, 26, a Texas grad who is chasing it on the Forme Tour, a Florida-based micro-mini that sends its top-five point earners to the Korn Ferry Tour. He could live somewhere cheaper and less glamorous, such as Jacksonville, but like the hedge-fund managers swelling the waiting lists at Jupiter’s private golf clubs, Hall wants to be close to the action.

“Every day I’m around players from the Challenge Tour, Canadian Tour, Latinóamerica, Korn Ferry,” he says. “All of these guys are busting their butts to get better—it’s motivating. Every now and then you get invited to play with established [PGA] Tour guys. To see up close how those guys operate, how they hit the ball, how they carry themselves, that’s invaluable.”

The Minor League Golf Tour hosts no-frills tournaments throughout South Florida, and it recently visited the Country Club of Coral Springs, an easy drive down I-95 from Jupiter. Thirty players kicked in $495 apiece to compete in (and fund) the three-day event. Only 12 made the cut and therefore earned a paycheck. The winner, Patrick Allgeier, went 19 under par to take home $2,200. Rohan Ramnath finished 11th, good for $480—a net loss even before factoring in gas money.

“It’s an interesting situation, to be surrounded by so much wealth and so many great golf courses and famous golfers while a lot of us are just struggling to get by,” says Ramnath, who graduated from Harvard with a degree in applied mathematics. “It’s a pretty stark illustration of how much your life can change if you shoot better scores.” There are trophies to be won and history to be made, but nowadays there is little doubt how the spoils would be spent.

Says Ramnath,“A big house on the water in Jupiter, that’s definitely the dream.”

Scottie Scheffler

Already the best in the world, Scottie Scheffler added another layer to his legend Sunday. He became the first player to win back-to-back in 50 years of THE PLAYERS Championship by matching the biggest comeback and the lowest closing round by a winner.

Scheffler holed out for eagle from the fourth fairway and had four birdies in a five-hole stretch around the turn, sending him to an 8-under 64 and a one-shot victory that wasn’t decided until the final putt.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson prop bet picks and PGA Tour predictions

T he PGA Tour is back in Texas for the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson this week after Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry came away as the champions of the Zurich Classic over the weekend. The 1st round from TPC Craig Ranch begins Thursday.

Below, we search for the best value prop bets among the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

There are co-favorites this week, with Jordan Spieth and Si Woo Kim both holding +1600 odds. Jason Day , the 2023 champion, has the 3rd-best odds at +2000, followed by Alex Noren (+2200). Will Zalatoris was in the field but he withdrew Tuesday due to a back injury flare-up.

TPC Craig Ranch is a par-72 and 7,414 yards, often ranking as one of the easiest courses on tour. It's a wide-open layout with very few hazards to trip up players. It's why the winning score has been between 23-under and 26-under in each of the last 3 years.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – Top-5 picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Jordan Spieth (+350)

Admittedly, it's really hard to get behind Spieth with the way he's been playing lately, but he's back home in Texas and has good course history (2nd and 9th). Even as inconsistent as he's been this season, he has the ability to flip a switch very quickly and get back on track.

Alex Noren (+450)

Noren has finished between 9th and 23rd in each of his last 5 starts this season and has results of 12th and 21st in 2 starts at TPC Craig Ranch. He's a perfect blend of recent form and tournament history.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – Top-10 picks

Tom hoge (+320).

Hoge should find himself in contention just based on his ball-striking, but he's also putting the ball well enough to win soon, too. In his last 2 individual events, he's finished 18th and 14th.

Keith Mitchell (+375)

Mitchell has played really well this season, with his lone hiccup recently coming at the Houston Open where he missed the cut. That was right after his collapse at the Valspar Championship but he's since gotten back on track with a T-14 at the Valero Texas Open.

Byeong Hun An (+275)

An finished 14th here last year and he was on a roll this season before missing the cut at the Players and Valero Texas Open. He bounced back with a T-16 at the Masters and with this week being a birdie fest, he should be in the mix.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – Top-20 picks

Nate lashley (+333).

Lashley has finished 17th and 23rd in his last 2 starts in this event and earlier this year, he came in 3rd at the Famers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. All we need is a top 20 and it's a good value at +333.

C.T. Pan (+333)

Pan came in 4th place at this tournament last year, the first time he played this event. He's currently on a 6-event made-cut streak and if he plays the weekend at TPC Craig Ranch, he'll have a decent shot at cracking the top 20.

Jhonattan Vegas (+500)

Vegas came in 23rd at the Corales Puntacana Championship, his 2nd top-25 finish this season. Back in 2021, he finished 9th and he made the cut (59th-place finish) in 2022, which are his lone 2 starts in this event.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – Matchups

Suggested play is golfer in bold .

Byeong Hun An (-110) vs. Min Woo Lee (-110)

It's not that I don't like Lee this week, but I just prefer An. Lee hasn't taken that major step forward that many were expecting this year and he missed the cut last year when An finished 14th.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – Top English

Aaron rai (+160).

Rai ranks 27th in SG: tee-to-green, but it's been his putting holding him back. It's not a great field for Englishmen, with Matt Wallace having the 2nd-best odds at +350, so I'll take Rai.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – First-round leader

Alex noren (+3300).

Noren ranks 7th on tour in 1st-round scoring average this season. He fired a 65 here in the opening round in 2021, which was tied for 7th.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson – To make the cut

An, min woo lee and hoge: yes (+165).

I like all 3 players this week with how open the course is. An and Lee are good drivers of the football, while Hoge is a terrific iron player.
