One can only imagine how sleepy the Jersey towns on the other side of the Hudson River were before the George Washington Bridge was opened in 1931. The bustling towns of Fort Lee, Edgewater, and Ridgefield continue to be bucolic bedroom communities, but now they are also centers of commerce and gastronomy. In fact, we’d put the Korean barbecue of Ft. Lee against any found in the five boroughs. These towns are well within the range of the splendid Jersey hot dog, too, especially the deep-fried style, and, as in deepest Brooklyn, many old-time Italian bakeries still linger, turning out lobster tails and freshly filled cannoli.

A utilitarian restaurant in a strip mall offers warm service and an extensive menu with dishes that mostly highlight tofu that’s made in-house, whether it’s soft, firm, or extra firm. In addition to tofu-based dishes, check out the bibimbap, pancakes, and japchae.

Let’s face it: The sushi at Kura is only of middlin’ quality, but the place sure is fun. The storefront in a strip mall north of the GW Bridge is based on a snaking conveyor belt that brings plates of reasonably priced sushi your way. Note that larger dishes, some not involving fish, can be ordered from the attendants. Seating is along the conveyor belt, but for larger parties there are tables in the back. “The Ocean City Boardwalk is a famous promenade that’s been a source of entertainment for more than 100 years,” says Diane Wieland, chairperson of Southern Shore Region DMO. The wooden walkway has amusement rides for all ages, mini golf, arcade games, souvenir and sweet shops, and iconic boardwalk eats — hot dogs, burgers, fries, pizza, and soft serve.

Situated at the tip of the Cape May peninsula, Cape May boasts sandy beaches, historic trolley rides, a striped lighthouse, and Victorian architecture. More than just a summer destination, the charming Jersey Shore town gets into the spirit for all the seasons — especially the holidays with festive decorations, tree lighting ceremonies, and a vendor village at Congress Hall .

Morey's Piers & Beachfront Water Parks

For summertime fun, look no further than Morey's Piers & Beachfront Water Parks. “Families can spend the entire day on more than 100 rides, splashing around the two water parks right on the beach, and lounging in private cabanas,” says Jeffrey Vasser, executive director, New Jersey Division of Travel & Tourism.

In a state known for its seaside amusements , the Wildwoods Boardwalk stands out from the pack. Composed of more than 70,000 wooden planks, the 38-block oceanfront stretch draws crowds with everything from amusement piers featuring rides and games galore to water parks to classic eateries and shopping.

Wildwood’s Doo Wop Motel District

“Walking around Wildwood’s Doo Wop Motel District is like being transported to the 1950s,” says Vasser. Dotted along the two-mile stretch between Atlantic and Ocean Avenues sits the largest concentration of mid-century motels in the country. “It’s really neat to see all the neon signs and retro details.”

American Dream

“ American Dream is, quite literally, an indoor vacation one-stop shop that’s open year-round,” raves Vasser. From the Nickelodeon Universe theme park and the DreamWorks Water Park to skiing at Big Snow and surf lessons at Skudin Surf to the hundreds of stores (​​it’s the second-largest shopping mall in the United States) and restaurants, it provides endless fun for the whole family.

Founded in 1705, Lambertville brings history to life through its well-preserved federal townhouses, Victorian homes, antique shops, restored 19th-century train depot, and the James Wilson Marshall House . “The charming town also supplies family-owned wineries and photogenic vantage points such as Goat Hill Overlook,” adds Vasser.

Beneduce Vineyards

"Most people don’t realize New Jersey is home to more than 50 wineries,” says Vasser. “One of my favorites, Beneduce Vineyards , has great wine and fun year-round events such as live music and food trucks on Saturdays.” Plus, it’s located less than 75 minutes from New York City and Philadelphia.

Grounds for Sculpture

Located on the former site of Trenton Speedway, Grounds for Sculpture is a 42-acre sculpture park and museum. Visitors can spend the day ogling art and grabbing a bite at the restaurant. The Hamilton cultural institution also hosts special events such as after-dark light and sound experiences in partnership with Klip Collective and the upcoming Def Poetry Jam Reunion .

Atlantic City

Approximately two hours from the Big Apple, Atlantic City — the East Coast's answer to Las Vegas — dazzles visitors with its casinos, live entertainment, glitzy hotels, and big-name restaurants like Nobu . While Steel Pier offers games, entertainment, boardwalk fare, an observation wheel with sweeping views, and the only helicopter ride at the Jersey Shore.

Nestled along the banks of the Delaware River in Hunterdon County, Frenchtown is a vibrant community with plenty of Victorian architecture, art, and culture to keep travelers entertained year-round. Vasser suggests visiting over Labor Day weekend because that's when Frenchtown Riverfest takes place. “There are all kinds of street fair activities along the river,” he says.

Cape May County Park & Zoo

Located in the Cape May Court House section of Middle Township, the Cape May County Park & Zoo houses more than 550 different animals and is free to the public. There are also awesome playgrounds for kids of all ages just outside the entrance. "It's truly one of the best-kept secrets in the area," says Wieland.

Asbury Park

Over the last decade, Asbury Park has become a creative hub and music mecca. There are so many venues to catch a show. Wieland recommends The Stone Pony , which is best known for launching the career of Bruce Springsteen. Asbury Lanes combines bowling, dining, and live entertainment. To admire eye-catching artwork, head to the boardwalk. The Wooden Walls Project collaborates with artists to turn blank walls into colorful photo ops.

Adventure Aquarium

Adventure Aquarium protects more than 8,500 aquatic species, including penguins, turtles, stingrays, and the largest collection of sharks on the East Coast. It also gives visitors the chance to interact with hundreds of sea creatures at the touch tanks. “It’s a favorite for kids of all ages, especially if you’re looking for an indoor activity,” says Wieland.

Long Beach Island

The April 8 solar eclipse is here, North Jersey! Here's your complete viewing guide

On April 8, parts of the United States, Mexico, and Canada will get a glimpse of a celestial rarity: a total solar eclipse  that will pass over a swath of North America. It will be the last full eclipse of the sun to be visible anywhere in the U.S. until Aug. 23, 2044.

Unfortunately for those of us here in North Jersey, you'll have to travel out of state  to get the best view of the eclipse . While most Americans will get a glimpse, the Garden State is at least a 4 to 5 hour drive from areas of upstate New York and northwest Pennsylvania that will be in the path of totality, which will stretch in the U.S. from Texas into Maine.

New Jerseyans will still get a great show, weather cooperating . About 90% of the sun will be covered in our area, blocking out all but a sliver of the star. That's still enough light to do serious damage to your eyes, so take precautions .

Here's what you need to know. Don't miss out. The next total eclipse in New Jersey skies won't arrive until May 1, 2079.

What time is the solar eclipse on April 8?

USA TODAY compiled a database of the best times to view the eclipse based on your ZIP code. Based on those calculations, the partial eclipse will start at about 2:09 p.m. and peak at 3:24 p.m. in North Jersey.

How long is the solar eclipse going to last?

The show will end around 4:35 p.m.

The latest eclipse weather forecast

Keep your fingers crossed. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service said they expect to see "fairly high" clouds in the coming hours. 

"We are forecasting 40% of cloud cover during the time of the eclipse. It's not a great forecast but not terrible either," meteorologist Ray Martin said.

What are the odds of seeing the eclipse? Depends on the time, the place − and the weather

Serious sky-watchers have their eyes on the prize: the total eclipse. That's the 100% blackout that occurs when the moon's shadow completely overspreads the sun's disc, creating the breathtaking image of a black circle with the fiery corona at the edges (which viewers should  not  look at directly).

"There's almost a mystical quality," said Amie Gallagher, director of the Raritan Valley Community College planetarium. "The totality experience is amazing."

What will the April solar eclipse look like from North Jersey? Expect a ‘visual spectacle’

Residents of the Garden State can still get a good view without venturing outside its borders. Virtually all of North Jersey will see 90 to 95% of the sun obscured by the moon on the afternoon of Monday, April 8, while most of South Jersey will be in the 85 to 90% range,  according to this NASA map .

North Jersey, here’s where you can go to a have a great view of the April eclipse

If you're up for a road trip, cities within the path of totality closest to North Jersey include Buffalo and Syracuse in New York; Burlington, Vermont; and Erie, Pennsylvania, each roughly a four to six-hour drive from the area. Residents willing to travel farther can head to major cities like Dallas, Cleveland and Indianapolis.

Other astronomical rarities will be visible in the darkened sky. Things you wouldn't normally see in the daytime. Things you might not see, ever. The rare spectacle of Baily's Beads . Four − count 'em − planets. And not least, the diabolical "devil comet." But be aware: You have to go to where the eclipse is total, not partial.

Think the solar eclipse is thrilling? To our ancestors, it was terrifying

Think of it as if you were an ancient Mesopotamian. Or someone from the Zhou Dynasty. Someone with no almanacs, no search engines. No science, as we know it today.

How loudly would you scream? What would you sacrifice? What would you promise the gods if they would only please,  please,  not leave the world in darkness? "It was pretty terrifying to many cultures," said Gallagher, of the Raritan Valley Community College planetarium. "People would be absolutely terrified that the sun was starting to disappear and they didn't understand why."

NJ’s next total solar eclipse is in 2079. But these other eclipses are coming soon

Don’t think you have to wait until 2079 for some celestial entertainment over North Jersey skies. There are plenty of other partial solar eclipses − as well as total and partial lunar eclipses −that North Jersey will experience over the next two decades. Here's the list.

The Great North American eclipse is Monday, April 8 and skywatchers – with proper glasses, of course – are ready to see the moon blocking out the sun during a solar eclipse.

What you will see, how long it will last and when it will take place will depend on where you live. While all states in the contiguous U.S. will experience some level of the eclipse, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, as well as small parts of Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee are along the path of totality and will experience the greatest periods of darkness.

In the U.S., the path of totality will start in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CT and will end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. ET (2:25 CT.) In those states, the periods of greatest darkness will reach up to 4 minutes, 27 seconds.

Scientists say the sun is approaching its maximum activity of its cycle this year, meaning it will be sending off more solar flares and eruptions from its surface — potentially making this year’s total solar eclipse much more dynamic.

The path of totality will start in Mexico and move across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before heading out over the North Atlantic. Small portions of Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee will also experience almost the entirety of the eclipse. Where to see solar eclipse 2024: NASA eclipse map shows best places along path of totality

During the eclipse, the sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people in the path of totality will be able to see the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the sun, NASA explains. Outside the path of totality, viewers will see a partial eclipse with the moon covering varying degrees of the sun.

Although Alabama is not in the path of “totality” during the April 8 eclipse – meaning we won’t see total darkness when the moon covers the sun – residents will see from 78 to 92 percent coverage, depending on location.

April 8 total solar eclipse: Texas officials warn people to stock up on food ahead of solar eclipse

Mike Jones, Hays County, Texas’s direct of the Office of Emergency Services, said the area is expecting thousands of visitors to arrive to see the eclipse. To prepare for the crowds, Jones advised residents to stock up on groceries and fill up on gas. If they are out on the day of the eclipse, he recommends residents “pack your patience.”

National Guard will be deployed for total solar eclipse on April 8

At the request of local emergency management officials, the Oklahoma National Guard will have members of the 63rd Civil Support Team available to assist local governments during the eclipse, including working with first responders with additional HAZMAT responses if needed.

Except during the brief total phase of the eclipse when the moon completely blocks the sun’s bright face, it’s not safe to look at the eclipse without specialized eye protection for solar viewing, NASA said on its eclipse information page. The two major factors in determining how much of the solar eclipse people in New Jersey will experience starting shortly after 2 p.m. are cloud cover and location.

NASA has a helpful tool where New Jerseyans planning to view the eclipse can enter their zip code and see their percentage of expected coverage, the amount of cloud cover as well as temperature and rain chances.

Since the path of totality will be hundreds of miles north and west of the Garden State, North Jersey would get to see more of the moon covering the sun under optimal conditions. However, forecasters say less cloud cover is expected in South Jersey than North Jersey. During the eclipse, the moon will almost entirely block out the sun.

The best viewing spot in New Jersey — if clouds cooperate — will be the northwestern corner of the state where 93% coverage of the sun is expected in Montague at 3:24 p.m. The eclipse will begin at 2:09 and be over at 4:35 p.m.

In the northeast corner — Alpine — it will be slightly cloudier but the eclipse will reach 90.8% coverage when it peaks at 3:25 p.m. The eclipse will begin at 2:20 p.m. and end at 4:36 p.m.

The eclipse will start at 2:07 p.m. in the southwestern corner of the state — Salem — with 87.4% coverage achieved by 3:23 p.m. and the eclipse concluding at 4:34 p.m.

While still very good, the lowest coverage in the state will be in Cape May — where about 84.5% of the sun will be covered at 3:23 p.m.

Other expected maximum coverage areas in New Jersey for Monday’s eclipse include:

• Newark — 90.2%
• Trenton — 89.1%
• Toms River — 87.4%
• Vineland — 86.5%

The closest cities to New Jersey the path of totality travels through are Buffalo, New York and Burlington, Vermont.

During the last eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017, about 75% of the sun was blocked in New Jersey.

Special eclipse glasses are the only way to safely view the eclipse.

If you know where to look, you may just luck out and find a vendor or even a local library with some solar eclipse glasses still in stock..

You're running out of time to get your own pair of certified glasses if you're wanting to catch a glimpse of the total solar ecli pse that is nearly one week away.

If you're planning to be among the millions of people in the United States who will witness the spectacular sight on April 8, having a proper pair of glasses couldn't be more paramount . Until the moon completely blocks the sun's disc on the path of totality and ushers in darkness , the sun's rays will pose a danger to unprotected retinas gazing skyward.

At this point, proper eyewear may be hard to come by and some may be tempted to turn to alternative methods such as welding goggles . But if you know where to look, you may just luck out and find a vendor or even a local library with some still in stock.

Here's what to know about where to find last-minute solar eclipse glasses.

American Paper Optics, Warby Parker, among those offering glasses

Compared to regular sunglasses , proper eclipse glasses are 100,000 times darker to block nearly all visible, infrared and ultraviolet light and protect our sensitive retinas when looking upward near the sun.

That's why experts widely recommend them for those who will be watching as the upcoming solar eclipse charts a 115-mile-wide path of totality across North America.

Reputable vendors can be found on any eclipse websites like  NationalEclipse.com, which sells a variety of eyewear products, along with plenty of other gadgets one may need to see the eclipse. Additionally, American Paper Optics, the nation's largest supplier of eclipse glasses, offers express shipping and includes a  a countdown at the top of its website  to let you know the deadline to make a purchase to get your glasses in time for the big day.

Warby Parker, which actually plans to give out free solar eclipse glasses beginning Monday, may also be a good place to check.

Here are some other companies offering specials and deals timed for the big deal, including offers on eclipse glasses.

Finally, you may want to check your local library or other public institutions in your area, as many of these places have been offering free eclipse glasses to residents. Just don't count on supplies still being available.

How to make sure your solar eclipse glasses aren't fakes

The responsibility of guiding American consumers to the safest eclipse glasses is largely left to the American Astronomical Society.

The organization maintains  a curated list of approved vendors  of solar eclipse glasses and its been updated to give priority to North American manufacturers for the upcoming astral event. Products you purchase that are listed on that site are guaranteed to be  in compliance with  the highest international safety standards.

Those standards are set by the International Organization for Standardization, which only vouches for solar eclipse glasses that are dark and strong enough to filter out a certain amount of the sun's harmful light.

Of course, plenty of fakes and cheap imitators are proliferating the online marketplace in the leadup to the eclipse.

A good rule of thumb is to avoid any vendors making the grand (and entirely made-up) claim that their products are endorsed by NASA. As the space agency reiterated to USA TODAY , it only advises that people get a pair of glasses, but does not recommend or certify any particular product.

The astronomical society also provides some  helpful tips  for other useful ways to spot scams and counterfeit glasses.

What else to know about the April 8 total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse offers the unique opportunity for skygazers to witness the spectacular astral display with the naked eye – but only when the time is right.

Eclipse glasses are still very much needed for most of the show, so make sure to come prepared,  according to NASA .

But when the moon moves completely in front of the sun and blocks its light, you'll know it's safe to fully take in the dazzling display. That moment is what is called "totality," whereby uncharacteristic darkness falls and all but the sun's outermost layer known as its corona makes a rare appearance to us here on Earth.

Hundreds of cities in  13 states are on the path of totality  for this year's total solar eclipse, which will pass from southwest to northeast across North America. You won't want to miss it, as this is the last such eclipse in North American  until 2044 .

And as you make your eclipse-viewing plans,  these interactive maps  should help you chart the time and duration for when totality would occur in cities along the path.

Earthquake maps show where seismic activity shook the Northeast today

Residents across the Northeast were rattled by a  4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook  the densely populated New York City metropolitan area and much of the surrounding region on Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey was quick to release maps showing the spot where the quake was centered, in New Jersey, and the area where it was felt.

The USGS reported the quake occurred about 7 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It indicated that the quake might have been felt by more than 42 million people. There were several aftershocks later in the day, including one with a magnitude of 4.0.

People in Baltimore , Philadelphia , New Jersey, Connecticut, Boston and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

The map below shows the seismic intensity of the earthquake. The map, which is mostly a lighter shade of blue, shows that the intensity was light to weak, depending on the distance from the epicenter. 

Another map released by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre on X, formerly Twitter, highlights the eyewitness reports of shaking and possible damage levels during the seismic event.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been briefed on the quake. 

"We're taking this extremely seriously and here's why: There's always the possibility of aftershocks. We have not felt a magnitude of this earthquake since about 2011," Hochul said. 

People across the region were startled by the rumbling of the quake. One New York City resident told CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook, "I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out," 

It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit by an earthquake. 

A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884. 

The shaking stirred memories of the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake that jolted tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. Registering magnitude 5.8, it was the strongest quake to hit the East Coast since World War II. The epicenter was in Virginia.

That earthquake left cracks in the Washington Monument, spurred the evacuation of the White House and Capitol and rattled New Yorkers three weeks before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
