Plantronics goes business casual with new Voyager 3200 Series headset

Plantronics has injected some business-class features into its more fashionably designed mono Bluetooth headset.

  • Maggie Award for Best Regularly Featured Web Column/Consumer

Plantronics' new  Voyager 3200 Series  ($100) mono Bluetooth headset may not look all that new to people who are familiar with the company's slightly more expensive Voyager Edge headset, but it does have some feature upgrades that make it more of a business-class product.

The biggest addition is something Plantronics calls triple-mic noise-canceling technology. "The precision-tuned, triple-mic design with enhanced digital signal processors (DSPs) separates your speech from background noise, delivering clear voice quality to you and your listener," the company says, touting the feature.

The other major change from the Voyager Edge is the design of the included charging case, which delivers up to 10 extra hours of talk time (the headset set itself delivers up to 6 hours of talk time when fully charged). The new-look case has a strap on it that allows you to hang from a belt loop or a strap on your bag.

The new charging case.

I've been playing around with an early sample of the 3200 Series and have been generally impressed with both its ergonomics and performance. I'm still a fan of the wrap-around-the-ear Voyager 5200 Series , which costs about the same, but the 3200 Series will appeal to people who are looking for a headset that has a little more discreet look to it and is easy to pop in and out of your ear.

Plantronics says the Voyager 3200 Series will include different bundle options as well as a step-up UC version that will cost $220 when it arrives in late July. The Voyager 3200 UC includes a Bluetooth USB audio processor to connect to a Mac, PC, tablet or smartphone for unified communications applications.

Plantronics Voyager 3200 Series

The Voyager 3200 Series looks like the Voyager Edge but has been upgraded with new features.

Here are the Voyager 3200 Series key features, according to Plantronics:

  • Dynamic mute alert senses and immediately alerts you when you begin to speak while muted.
  • Smart sensors answer or transfer calls when you put on the headset. Also, when wearing the headset, you can say "answer" or "ignore" to manage incoming calls. (Full smart sensor capabilities can be enabled via the Plantronics Hub for mobile or desktop use.)
  • Voice alerts announce caller names, connection status and talk time level.
  • Up to 98 feet/30 meters of wireless range from supported Class 1 Bluetooth devices.
  • NFC pairing with NFC‐enabled devices.
  • Activate Siri, Google Now or Cortana with a touch of a button.
  • Wideband‐ready for PC telephony and HD Voice with compatible devices.
  • Voyager 3200 headsets work with Plantronics Hub for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. The software app allows you to locate a lost headset, change languages, personalize settings, alerts and more.
  • Available in diamond black, buff white and carbon gray colors.

  • Battery Life
  • Competition
  • Final Verdict

We purchased the Plantronics Voyager 5200 so our expert reviewer could thoroughly test and assess it. Keep reading for our full product review.

The Plantronics Voyager 5200 isn’t exactly like the Bluetooth earpieces of a decade ago. It has a look that sits somewhere between a behind-the-ear exercise earbud and the slab-style earpieces that made Bluetooth headsets popular.

With intuitive controls using a very limited set of physical buttons (we were surprised at just how useful that one red multi-function button was), a supremely clear call quality, and moisture resistance, it almost makes you forget that the fit is just a little loose and awkward. In fact, this was our only real drawback to the headset, but it’s definitely a big one.

It’s clear that the design and feature set of the 5200 series are intended to place it in the on-the-go space. Without a solid fit, however, we find it hard to believe you could easily take this out and about.

Design: A bold, sporty headset with a bulky housing

The 5200 is probably the most striking headset available in the this single-ear Bluetooth headset space. The black and silver color scheme on the 5200 is accented by dramatic pops of red both under the silicon ear tip and on the metallic multi-function button. But, the shininess of the boom mic is probably the most eye-catching. If you’re looking to be inconspicuous, color-wise, this isn’t the headset for you.

The boom mic component measures just under three inches, while the diameter of the housing for the earpiece driver is about half-an-inch. This is mostly in line with the other earpieces in the space, but we found that the flashy color scheme made the boom mic appear longer than it actually is.

The real issue with the design is with the back housing where the battery and most of the components are. Just like the Voyager Legend series, there’s a super-thick (about half-an-inch) behind-the-ear part that is bulky and heavy. If your ear is big enough, it won’t be that noticeable as it’s tucked behind, but it is a clunky design component to keep in mind.

Durability and Build Quality: Moisture resistant and stress resilient

Oddly, very few Bluetooth headsets in this category provide any great promises of IP-level ratings (this one is only IPX4). We’re not sure why this is the case, especially when these headsets are meant to be worn for long periods of time, and the 5200 seems designed for outdoor use. But, Plantronics does offer a nano P2i coating that will make it lightly resistant to air moisture and sweat.

You definitely should avoid dropping these into standing water, or running them under a faucet, but light precipitation will be mostly fine. We found that the construction otherwise was actually really good. The boom make is made of thick, solid plastic, and the rest of the unit has a good amount of resilient flex to it. The malleable nature of the materials is important because it seems like it will last a good while and should withstand the repeated wear and tear of being taken off and put back on.

Comfort: Pretty loose and a bit awkward

As we mentioned, one of the biggest drawbacks for the 5200 series is that its design, like a couple other Plantronics counterparts, isn’t as tight and solid as we’d expect. Because of the flashy design and the water resistance, we expected this to be a tight fit—capable of being worn on a jog. We found that because the silicon earpad is harder and less flexible than foam-style eartips, it didn’t conform to our ear and left uncomfortable pressure points in certain angles.

On top of this, the wing that goes behind the ear—normally the component that is meant to pin a headset to your ear—is bulky and heavy, so it sort of just hangs back there, rather than serving as a stabilizing function. These two factors left us constantly readjusting the earpiece in our ear. It’s important to note that this is a subjective matter, and there are multiple sizes of silicon pads, so it’s likely you’ll find a fit that works for you and feels comfortable. But if you are going to be working out, this headset might be an issue.

Plantronics touts their multi-function buttons that act as both call answer buttons and toggles to cue up your smart assistant.

Controls and Connectivity: Surprisingly satisfying and really intuitive

When we went into this review, we didn’t expect the controls and interactive functionality to be a standout feature of any Bluetooth headset, but we were pleasantly surprised to find this to be the case for the 5200.

Plantronics touts their multi-function buttons that act as both call answer buttons and toggles to cue up your smart assistant (it worked with Siri in our tests). Additionally, when you press the button while you’re on a call, it will mute the microphone for quick asides. What’s also cool about this is that there’s a dynamic mute alert that tells you if you try to talk and you forgot to unmute the mic, which is a really smart addition.

Beyond this, there are smart sensors on the earpiece that automatically tell if it’s in your ear or not. In practice, this meant that if we put the headset down on a table, and received a call, our phone would let us answer the call on our smartphone itself, rather than defaulting to the headset. If the headset was brought up to our ear in the middle of our phone ringing, it let us answer the call with the headset.

The 5200 also boasts the Bluetooth 4.1 protocol with up to 98 feet of range, A2DP capabilities, and all the headset control functions you’d expect. We encountered very little interference in our real-world trials, and overall, you have a top-notch device as far as connectivity is concerned.

The call quality on this headset went toe-to-toe with the most expensive ones out there.

Call Quality: Among the clearest you can get

We’ve spent the last week or two testing Bluetooth headsets from multiple manufacturers, and prices range from $30 all the way to about $150. The 5200 sits somewhere in between those, but we found that the call quality on this headset went toe-to-toe with the most expensive ones out there. This sharp quality is due, in part, to the 4-mic array with DSP noise reduction. These mics seemed to be able to isolate background noise and work some magic to eliminate it on the other end, meaning these headphones should be great for walking and talking, even in our noisy testing areas on the streets of NYC.

There’s a 20-band EQ that’s optimized for voice calls, acoustic echo cancellation, and even what Plantronics calls a “sidetone” elimination, which to our ears isolates unpleasant resonance. One more important feature is Plantronics’s WindSmart technology, which, according to the manufacturer “delivers six layers of protection against wind noise from a combination of aerodynamic design elements and an adaptive proprietary algorithm.” We can’t vouch for the algorithm, but we can tell you that wind was not an issue during outdoor calls.

One closing point on call quality is that the speaker itself does not have a ton of definition outside of the voice call-friendly section of the frequency spectrum. This is due, in part, to the poor fit we discussed earlier, but is probably also due to the fact that the driver isn't designed specifically for music. This isn’t the biggest deal, because most users are looking for a phone peripheral, but it is good to note.

Battery Life: A long-lasting unit with versatile charging options

Plantronics puts the totals at 7 hours of talk time and 9 days of standby on a single charge. The standby time trended toward over a week so it checks out there, and we actually got about 7.5 hours of talk time. Your mileage could vary depending on how loud the volume is and if you’re in an area with a lot of other wireless devices around, but it’s really nice to see that the hours advertised hold up. It takes anywhere from 75–90 minutes to fully charge the headset, which isn’t industry-leading, but is in line with a lot of the competition.

One interesting fact here is that, even though Plantronics only lists micro USB on the specs list, our unit also had the proprietary pin-connection port that we found on the Voyager Legend series. While the 5200 didn’t come with the magnetic docking charger, if you have other Plantronics devices, you could theoretically use this connector to charge in addition to a micro-USB.

Price: Value for your money

The Plantronics site puts the list price of the 5200 at $120, which is probably a fair price for the connectivity and features here. But on Amazon, the headset is closer to $80, and after really examining the market, this seems like the best deal available for the reliability. Some of the $40–60 options tend to lack some Bluetooth capabilities, and the $150 choices are just too expensive for a simple peripheral. This really is the sweet spot for the price.

Competition: A solid contender in this price range

The obvious competitor is the slightly cheaper Voyager Legend option from Plantronics. What you get with the 5200 is a more modern Bluetooth connection, a better mic array (for clearer calls), and a flashier design. On the other side of the Plantronics product offering, you’ll find the over-ear Voyager Focus . This is the cream of the crop for Plantronics, and it has a bloated price tag to match. If comfort and premium build is your focus, go for the Focus, but otherwise, the 5200 is a better value.

Jabra is one of the few brands that still have a mono headset like the Voyager series, and the Jabra Motion comes in right around the same price. The design is a bit curvier and you can customize the fit a bit better, so if comfort is your priority, take a look here.

Read more reviews of the best Bluetooth headsets available to purchase online.

The fit is a bit loose, but phone calls sound fantastic.

If you need a Bluetooth headset for everyday calling and prioritize a solid connection and call clarity, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better option than the Plantronics Voyager 5200. Just be warned that it may not stay in your ear if you're going for a jog or hitting the gym.

plantronics voyager 3200 vs 5200

  • The noise cancellation and windsmart tech are awesome. It's slightly better than the previous model because they added another mic.
  • I was amazed to find out that while mowing the caller could not hear the lawnmower. I also could hear the caller. This headset blocks out all background noise. I tried it with the disposal on No noise.
  • This has the best noise cancellation by far compared to the dozens I've tried.
  • I use the headset actively so I cannot tolerate those that has less than 6 hours battery life for talking/audio.
  • Decently-long talk time, about 5 hours on a full charge. Fairly easy-to-use controls with buttons that are large enough to find. Charges with any micro-USB cable. Easy to pair. Can connect two devices at the same time.
  • The noise cancelling function is one of the best in the marketwindow down.
  • The sound quality on these is so great and the noise cancelling works for just about everything background except loud speakers and constant strong wind in mine and my hubs experience.
  • The multi-directional noise cancellation was a huge plus over previous Voyager models.
  • The wideband audio mode works great, and I get about six hours of talk time when using it.
  • When fully charged, the unit indicates 11 hours of talk time. I was able to get about 5 hours, before I got the "better low".
  • Maximum Frequency Response

  • Fairly easy-to-use controls with buttons that are large enough to find. Charges with any micro-USB cable. Easy to pair. Can connect two devices at the same time.
  • Great product, and like other newer BT devices, has a control app for phones that allows you to select which 2 devices you want to connect to simultaneously.
  • The noise cancelling and wind blocking on this headset is amazing. The controls are easy and the Windows/Android software is great. Get the charge case for it as well. You won't be disappointed.
  • I had zero issues with the older version, but for some reason the new version when used in my truck will activate the voice control on my radio and will at times keep the voice control on indefinitely, I let it go several times and it didn't complete the search action until I turned the headset off.
  • Can be worn on left or right ear.
  • You can download Plantronics smartphone app to update firmware and to customize its other advance features.
  • Nice features and able to pair multiple devices at 1 time.
  • One thing I really liked is UC feature. I can easily take calls from Hangout, Skype etc, without having to pair using Bluetooth. Just push the USB and use Hangout even in a noisy environment. I
  • I really enjoyed the experience of using the new headset from Plantronics, including integration with Skype for Business and time of bacteria allowing work practically the whole day without having to load.
  • Requent disconnect from cell phone.
  • Fast Charging
  • Battery Capacity
  • Charging Time
  • Yet OTOH this has micro USB charging (unlike the previous model that needed a special charger, which nobody wants to have).
  • About the only good thing is that it can be charged by my previous microUSB charging cables and fits around the ear like the Voyager Legend.
  • Charges with any micro-USB cable. Easy to pair. Can connect two devices at the same time.
  • Battery life is much worse. With the exact same type of usage, I would say that you get a little more than half of the previous model, which is very disappointing.
  • The battery never charges up past 6 hours, last one would charge to seven - and this one will only last about 3 -4 hours before it needs a recharge.
  • Comes with a charging cradle which can also recharge your headset while you are on the go.
  • Headset can also be charged with a micro USB cable (included).
  • Charging base serves as both a portable charging unit (its a battery pack basically), and also a active charging dock to use headset while its charging.
  • 7 hours of talk time it's very good.
  • Battery life I've noticed over time has started to diminish. I went from 6-hours down to roughly 4 active hours over the months. I'm hoping I can just recalibrate and this will fix the problem, but something to keep in mind.

plantronics voyager 3200 vs 5200

The only difference between the Plantronics Voyager 5200 and the 5220 is the extra accessory that comes with the 5220: a Vehicle Power Charger (VPC). This lets you charge your Voyager even while driving in the car, perfect for long travels or just a quick charge on your way home.

Many big-box retailers partner with companies to come up with a different model name or SKU for certain products designed to be sold exclusively by big retail brands. What they usually do is add accessories (in this case, the car charger) or incorporate minor design variations to the standard model. However, their internals are typically the same.

The Plantronics Voyager 5200 and 5220 are comfortable and lightweight ; they have a dedicated Alexa button on the headset

plantronics 5200 vs 5220

Bluetooth headsets are not as stealthy as most wireless earbuds on the market today. However, the Voyager 5200 and 5220 are among the most discreet-looking Bluetooth headsets that don’t compromise noise-cancellation. These headsets are lightweight and their ear hooks can be worn comfortably, even when used for long hours. Their in-ear tips also come with foam, so they fit snugly when worn.

Plantronics thoughtfully designed the placement of buttons on the Voyager 5200 and 5220, learning from users’ suggestions based on the older Voyager Legend. Their volume adjustment buttons are placed far from the mute button. This helps avoid accidentally pressing the mute button and talking for a while, only to realize you were on mute the whole time. The Voyagers also added the extra feature that the audio lets you know when you start talking while you’re on mute.

There’s also a red button for activating Amazon Alexa on the 5200 and the 5220. This alleviates the need to whip out your phone or fumble with the sensors everytime you want to activate Alexa.

Plantronics Voyager 5220 Bluetooth Headset

The Plantronics Voyager 5220 bear similar noise-canceling features as the Voyager 5200, except it comes with a car charger out of the box.

The Plantronics Voyager 5200 and 5220 deliver impressive noise-cancellation

plantronics voyager 3200 vs 5200

Both the Voyager 5200 and the 5220 are equipped with four microphones and six levels of WindSmart Technology. These work together to provide top-notch noise and wind cancellation.

Even when you’re somewhere loud and crowded or in a moving vehicle with open windows, these Bluetooth headsets can effectively block out noise and wind. The caller on the other line will still hear your voice clearly without hearing all the noise around you. Other users even report that even while calling from a bustling area, the caller on the other line still thinks they’re in their home office.

The Plantronics Voyager 5200 and the 5220 use Bluetooth 4.1, have multi-point pairing, and boast voice commands for a completely hands-free call

plantronics voyager 3200 vs 5200

Equipped with Bluetooth 4.1, the Voyager 5200 and the 5220 offer a mobile range of up to 98 feet or 30 meters. This means when using the Bluetooth headset, the connection won’t drop even if you walk around your house or office without holding your phone. They further allow multi-point pairing, meaning you can connect two devices simultaneously to either the 5200 or the 5220.

A well-liked feature of the Voyager headsets is the “Answer” and “Ignore” voice prompts. The Voyager can tell who’s calling through your caller ID, and you can simply command the Voyager to either “Answer” or “Ignore” the call. It will either connect or drop the call without having to whip out your phone or press a button on the headset. This comes in handy when you’re driving, biking, or simply have your hands full.

Both Voyager headsets are also equipped with motion sensors that detect when you put the Voyager on your ear. When someone calls you on your phone, it will automatically answer the call when you place the Bluetooth headset on your ear. In addition, both the Voyager 5200 and the 5220 can be used with smart assistants like Siri, Google, Alexa or Cortana.

The Plantronics Voyager 5200 and the 5220 are moisture-proof, can last for up to 7 hours of talk time and have Tile integration

charging case of voyager 5200 and 5220

Both the Voyager 5200 and the 5220 can last for up to 7 hours of usage. When you turn the headset on, it will tell you how many usage hours you have left. If you get the charging case with the Voyager, you’ll get 14 more hours of talk time, and the case also serves as a protective case for your headset.

Both Voyager headsets can also be docked on the charging case for easy access when making or taking calls. The charging case is sold separately at around 40 USD and costs around 30 USD more if bundled with the Voyager 5200 or the 5220. It’s compact, portable and well-built, making it a worthwhile bundle with the Voyager.

Coated by P2i moisture-repellent material, both the Voyager 5200 and the 5220 can withstand minor spills, splashes, and sweat moisture. However, they cannot survive being submerged underwater as they are not designed for that purpose. Another notable feature of the Voyager 5200 and 5220 is they have a built-in Tile. This lets you locate your Bluetooth headset through the app during instances where you can’t find it.

The Plantronics Voyager 5200 offers better value for your money. Get the Voyager 5220 only if you require a car charger.

This is a tough call as typically, the big-box retailer model offers extra accessories for the same price as the original. However, in this case, the Plantronics Voyager 5200 often goes on sale and has been more affordable than the Voyager 5220 . At the time of writing, Amazon slashed its price and costs around 25 USD less. If you will pay the full price, then the Voyager 5220 is the better choice as it comes with a car charger, an accessory that may come in handy from time to time.

The Plantronics Voyager 5220 is exclusive to select big-box retailers and comes with a car charger, an accessory not included in the Plantronics Voyager 5200 .

Yes, the Plantronics Voyager 5220 and 5200 are among the best noise-canceling headsets in the market.

While both Plantronics headsets can withstand the occasional spills and splashes, they are not recommended for swimming or showering.

Yes, they are excellent noise-canceling headphones that can block out noise well. Their four microphones also make sure the caller on the other end can hear you clearly during your call.

Plantronics Voyager 5200 FAQS…

Question: What exactly is included in this package? Answer: No ear cushions are included. After a few minutes of wearing the earpiece, they irritated my ears.

Question: Is it possible to charge with the earlier Legend series magnetic clasping cables? The terminals are shown in the photos, but their location has changed. Answer: Do not purchase the above-mentioned earpiece and charger. The Legend’s cable, not the 5200’s, is included. Poly (plantronics) does not produce the affordable, easy magnetic charger for the 5200 for some odd reason, and the base has been altered to the point where it no longer fits the voyager charger. However, they will gladly overcharge you for a big, cumbersome case/docking unit. I’ve had this product for over a decade and it’s the finest on the market; however, I do have around seven now-inactive charging ports!

Question: Is there a mute button? Answer: Yes, there is a mute button on it.

Question:Is this the most recent Plantronics Voyager model available? Answer: The Voyager 5200 and 5220 both claim to be Bluetooth 4.1 (official product information may be found on the Plantronics website), however the Voyager 5200 UC claims to be “Blutooth 5.0 with BLE.” On the Plantronics website, I don’t see any Voyagers that are newer than that.

Question: How do you switch between two linked devices (for example, to answer a phone while using it on a PC screen share)? Answer: Hello! is the response. Receiving a phone call on the second device will trigger a notice on the headset; at this point, you may answer the call and switch the audio over by pressing the call button once.

Question:Is it possible to link this model to a laptop? Is there a USB cable included with this bundle to connect a laptop to the voyager? Answer: Bluetooth headsets can be used by devices that support them, and if your laptop has Bluetooth built-in and your adapter supports the proper profiles (HSP for calls and A2DP for media streaming), you may link and use any of them (including our Voyager 5200). This is the regular Voyager 5200, which does not come with the BT600 adaptor. The BT600 as well as the charging case are included in the package of our Voyager 5200 UC model; component number 206110-01 may be found on it. If you have any more questions, please contact our customer service team at www.plantronics.com/support .

Plantronics Voyager 5220 FAQS…

Question:My order arrived a few days ago, however it was missing the portion that connects to the bluetooth to charge it. Is that something you have to buy separately? Answer: There is a little rubber door on the very bottom of the machine that opens, and you put the micro usb into it.

Question:What is the method of charging? Answer: A micro USB connector on the bottom of the ear piece is used to charge it.

Question:Is the bass or volume appropriate for driving in a car? I’m going to ask anyone who’s had this for a time. How’s it doing so far? Answer: For what it is, the sound quality is quite decent. I actually use this in my car instead of my vehicle’s Bluetooth since it makes it so much easier for me to hear and for others to hear me. It’ll certainly remain in your ear when you’re exercising.

Poly Voyager 5200 Vs. Jabra Talk 65 Bluetooth Headset Comparison

Poly Voyager 5200 Vs. Jabra Talk 65 Bluetooth Headset Comparison - Headset Advisor

If you’re someone who likes using a headset when working remotely, or on-the-go, then you’ve probably familiar with different makes and models of Bluetooth wireless headsets . Being hands free, and cord free when on calls is very convenient, and also helps to make you more efficient, comfortable and if on the road, safe.

Two names that are synonymous with headsets include Poly (formerly Plantronics), and Jabra. And when it comes to wireless headsets used with mobile phones, Jabra and Poly both make a model very similar to each other. Specifically, I’m referring to the Jabra Talk 65, and the Poly Voyager 5200.

To begin, as I mentioned, these headsets look pretty much the same. They’re worn over the ear with attached ear gels that insert into the ear. You get different sizes to choose from, so you can find the size that’s most comfortable. We all have different sizes of ears, so having the choice of different sizes is helpful from the standpoint of comfort, and sound.

poly voyager 5200 vs jabra talk 65

In terms of weight, that’s another one of those things that make these headsets nearly identical because they both weigh 0.7 ounces. I’m no mathematical genius but I do recognize that’s less than an ounce, and because of that, it’s fair to say that these headsets are light.

I do find it  interesting that the Talk 65 design pretty much mirrors the Poly 5200, and weighs the same. In any case, both of these headsets are lightweight, and by most accounts, comfortable.

Poly Voyager 5200 vs Jabra Talk 65 Video

Microphone

Both of these headsets come with two microphones that are noise canceling. This is important to know because the microphone quality directly relates to audio quality, which is important to anyone who places value on having a professional sounding call.

A little bit later, I’ll comment on sound quality, but suffice it to say that Poly and Jabra are the two leading professional headset manufacturers in the world, and it isn’t common for them to provide sub-standard sound quality, so it’s unlikely we’ll be disappointed in how these two headsets sound.

Still,  we tested both of them for how well they sound in a quiet room, and how well they sounded, and reduced noise, in a room with varying sounds such as:

  • Office noise
  • Dogs barking
  • And of course, our tests are never complete unless we include our noisy Vitamix blender test

The results of those tests are upcoming.

These are wireless headsets, and because of that, once the battery dies, you’re pretty much dead in the water. That underscores the importance of having a decent battery, especially when you consider that this headset is normally used out of an office, and in many (or most) cases, no access to electrical outlets for a recharge.

So what do you get in terms of battery performance from the Poly 5200, and Jabra Talk 65?

The Poly 5200 gives you 7 hours of talk time on a single charge, but that can be extended to 14 hours through the portable recharge case.

The Jabra Talk 65 gives you a full 14 hours of battery life on a single charge with no charge case required.

At the end of the day, you get 14 hours of talk time from both of these headsets, but in my opinion, the Jabra Talk 65 is more convenient because there’s no need to pack around a headset charge case. As a result I feel that the advantage goes to the Jabra Talk 65.

In terms of the type of cable used to recharge the batteries, Poly uses micro USB, where Jabra uses USB C. A cable expert I’m not, but I do know that there are advantages in using USB C over micro USB cables with power and data transfer being two of those advantages. And USB C cables are becoming the new standard.

And while we’re still on the subject of batteries, when the batteries on either of these headsets will no longer take a charge, they can’t be replaced.

This means that when you reach that point, as all batteries will, you’re required to replace the headset instead of just the battery. And, a headset replacement is more costly than replacing the battery. This is something to be aware of if you have your eye on either of these headsets.

Wireless range - is there a difference?

jabra talk 65 range

Even though both of these headsets operate off of Bluetooth technology, there is a difference in the wireless range that they provide.

The Poly 5200 is rated up to 98 feet, and the Jabra Talk 65 is rated up to 300 feet. In both cases, you should expect to get less because you typically get about half the stated range. Even with that in mind, you can see that there’s a very big difference between these two headsets when it comes to wireless range.

So if you want the ability to walk away from the device that you’re connected to, to talk, or just listen, then hands down, the Talk 65 is the way to go. Simply because you get a lot more wireless range.

What about connecting to a computer?

Most computers these days are Bluetooth enabled. And, being that both of these headsets are Bluetooth, it means they’re able to be used with any computer that’s Bluetooth capable. With that said, the Poly Voyager 5200 comes with a USB Adapter, and because of that, it has some inherent advantages.

First, you may get longer wireless range over connecting via Bluetooth, and you should have a more stable wireless connection and better sound quality as well. You’ll also have compatibility with all the leading UC platforms such as Microsoft Teams, RingCentral, Zoom and others.

The Jabra Talk 65 doesn’t work with a USB Adapter which means it can only be used with a computer if it’s Bluetooth enabled.

So deciding on one over the other when it comes to connectivity, really comes down to how you intend to use a headset. If compatibility to the leading UC platforms is important to you, then there’s a clear advantage with the Poly 5200 UC. If, on the other hand, computer connectivity isn’t a big part of your daily routine, then either model should meet your needs just fine.

Voice answering

poly voyager 5200 voice answer

If you’re someone who wants to take calls using your voice, then the Poly 5200 UC has the edge over the Talk 65 because the Jabra doesn’t have that feature. With that said, the Talk 65 does allow you to access Google Assistant, Siri as well as get GPS directions.

The controls on these headsets are pretty similar.

The Poly Voyager 5200 UC has:

voyager 5200 volume controls

  • Answer/ignore/end
  • Mute on/off
  • Volume up, volume down
  • Track forward, track back, pause and play

The Jabra Talk 65 has these functions:

jabra talk 65 volume controls

  • Answer/End/Reject
  • Volume up / down
  • Mute on / off
  • Power on / off
  • Voice assistant

Sound Quality & Noise Reduction

As mentioned earlier, both of these Bluetooth headsets come with two noise canceling microphones. So on the surface, you could make the assumption that both of these headsets should sound pretty much the same. And, to a degree, they do, but not entirely.

In the Jabra Talk 65 datasheet, it states that the microphone is able to remove 80% of the background noise. There isn’t a readily available statement like this for the Poly Voyager 5200 UC, but I’d have to figure it’s in that same ballpark. With that said:

  • How much background noise did they both remove in our tests? 2. How good was the voice audio quality?
  • How well did they both do to maintain voice quality when the microphones were dealing with filtering out the background noise?

If I had to choose one over the other for sound quality, and noise reduction, I’d pick the Jabra Talk 65. I say this because when we tested the voice audio quality, noise reduction capability and voice quality with background noise present, the Talk 65, to me, sounded better, and removed more noise.

Sound quality is subjective for sure, but when I listened, and then relistened to both of these headsets in a quiet room, a room with different noises (office noise, dogs barking, and a loud blender nearby), the Talk 65, to me, just did a better job.

In saying this, I’m not trying to paint the picture that it was day-and-night difference better, but what I am saying is it just sounded better. After hearing them both, you may have a different opinion because as I said, sound quality is very subjective, but that’s my take.

The Poly Voyager 5200 UC comes with the downloadable Poly Hub software . This software allows you to customize your headset for audio preferences, turn on or off certain features such as voice answer or HD voice for example. You can even update your headset firmware.

The Jabra Talk 65 isn’t currently compatible with the Jabra+ software for this same customization, and firmware updating. It’s rumored that the Talk 65 may be compatible with this software in the very near future. Hopefully so, but we’ll see.

So what’s the verdict? Which one of these headsets is best?

This is one of those situations where I can’t recommend one over the other. Why? Because both of these headsets have certain advantages over the other, and considering those advantages as they relate to your specific needs is the only way you could pick one over the other.

For example, if you’re someone who wants the longest wireless range possible, then the decision would be easy because the Talk 65 gives you a lot more than the 5200 UC.

If you want as much talk time as possible, then the decision could get a little more difficult. Both give you up to 14 hours of talk time, but they give it to you differently. Jabra gives you a full 14 hours on a single charge, whereas the Poly Voyager 5200 UC gives you 7 hours on the initial charge, and an additional 7 hours when recharged through the portable charging case.

For me, I’d pick the Jabra simply because you don’t need to recharge to get 14 hours, and you don’t have to tote around a charge case. On the other hand, some might find the portable charge case handy in some instances. So as I said, making a decision based on talk time isn’t cut and dried as say the wireless range.

jabra talk 65

If you want to use the headset with a computer, and you’d like compatibility with one of the popular UC services like Microsoft Teams, RingCentral or others, then the Poly Voyager 5200 UC would be your best choice because it comes with a USB Adapter for better computer integration.

Both of these headsets are very good. Both are professional grade. And, as you’ve learned, they may look pretty much the same, but there are differences; some sizable, and others more subtle. One of those differences includes the price.

The Poly Voyager 5200 UC is $199.99, and the Jabra Talk 65 is $99.00. So, deciding which is best for you really comes down to which model has the feature, or features that best meets your needs, and which model best fits into your budget.

The truth is you can’t go wrong with either of these headsets. The Poly Voyager 5200 UC has been around for awhile, and it has been very popular.

The Jabra Talk 65, on the other hand, is a newer version of the 5200 that brings with it some enhancements such as longer range.

So once you have a good sense of what’s most important to you, you’ll find that choosing between these two headsets will become much easier.
