Located about 35 km from Thiruvananthapuram, Poovar drains Neyyar River into Arabian Sea. During monsoon, Neyyar River carries sand and mud and mineral deposits to Poovar, resulting in the formation of an estuary. The crowning glory of Poovar is its serene backwaters and the mangroves flourishing in them. Dotted with islands, the backwaters are rich in flora and fauna. Apart from witnessing a slice of life in a coastal village, the cruise through the backwaters can bring you the sightings of a variety of birds such as Kingfisher, Brahminy Kite, Night Heron, Sea Egret, Black Darter and Indian Cormorant eagle. The friendly fishing community residing in the village is unique from the rest because of its customs, cultures and traditions. With its golden-coloured sand, the Poovar beach will excite the travellers who ferry by boat to reach there. Due to its limited accessibility, the beach is not crowded and it is a perfect place to relax amid a serene environment. Aazhimala Siva Temple , Vizhinjam harbour and Kovalam beach are some of the nearby attractions in Poovar. The boat ride shows you lavish green tree shelter, coconut grooves island, bright birds, brilliant sand ocean side and scarcely any different spots.
