Pune to Matheran- One Day Trip

It was one day trip to Matheran from Pune. There are many ways to reach Matheran from Pune but I opted for Train. Sahyadri express leaves pune at 7 am and reaches Neral around 10 am. You can take a train to Karjat also and then a local train from Karjat to Neral ( 14 KM) and will hardly take 10 mins to reach Neral station. I boarded Sahyadri express and reached Neral directly. From Neral you have two options to reach Matheran. 1. Take a toy train from Neral and will take 2 hours to reach Matheran station. ( Adult Ticket Rs 60/ Person one way for second class, First class is also similar to second class except curtains and different flooring) 2. You can get a taxi to reach Dasturi Naka in 20-25 mins ( taxi charges Rs 70/ Person). No vehicles are permitted beyond Dasturi Naka. So you have to get down and pay one time capitation charge of Rs 50/ person. From Dasturi Naka you have to walk for hardly 5 mins when you will reach the station " Aman Lodge". from here you have to take train ticket to Matheran ( Rs 45/ person one way) and train will take 10-15 min to drop you to Matheran. After reaching Matheran : Matheran is a place where there is no vehicles and only way of exploring it is on foot or by horses. It is highly impractical to say that you will explore whole Matheran in one day. You have to live there to experience the beauty of this place. But anyway mine was one day trip so I was in hurry. I walked to see the points and barely covered 3-4 points. Where to eat in Matheran: There are many places in Matheran where you can find good places to eat but do not expect a very lavish type of restaurant. (may be it may be available but I haven't seen any). There are many Gujarati restaurants where you can get veg Thali. I opted to try non veg food and went to Alankar to try its chicken Biryani. Shabbir biryani house is also famous but I haven't went there. Alankar was also good and not very costly also. A plate of chicken biryani costs Rs 140 and quantity is good for one person. Since there are logistics issues of transporting materials to Matheran so it is bit pricy. A glass of sugarcane juice will cost Rs 30 but it is quite justified depending upon the terrain. Back from Matheran to Neral. Again there is toy train from Matheran to Nearl which starts from 5 pm and will take 2 hours ( Return fare Rs 75/ person). Other way is to take train from Matheran to Aman Lodge ( Rs 45/ Person) and reach Aman Lodge in 10-15 mins ( Rs 45/ Person) and from Aman lodge walk to Dasturi Naka and take taxi to get back to Neral. Taxi fare Rs 70/ person and will take 20-25 mins. From Neral to Pune: Not many trains stop at Neral station for Pune so take a train to Karjat and from Karjat you will get many Pune bound trains. What to see In Matheran: I am attaching a map where you can find all the points to see. Important Information: 1. There is only one ATM in Matheran ( Kotak Mahindra Bank) so better have enough money in pocket before starting from neral. 2. If you are not an avid driver then don't try to drive from Neral to Matheran as road has very sharp bends. Better be cautious ( my personal opinion). 3. Please please please do not walk in Matheran or in Aman Lodge with any food materials in your hands. There are many monkey who will surround you and many even snatch your food items. Beware of monkeys please. Even though they have not attacked me but one time I was surrounded by them. I was having camera in my hand and they thought its something to eat. I was scared. If you are in mood to really enjoy this place then go and stay there for more than one day then only you will realize the beauty of this place.

Neral matheran toy train is a great experience, with nice views of valleys along its route, but just be sure to check weather it is operational before planning, because they stop the operation for a major part of the route during the monsoons, and the train runs only from aman lodge, which is an intermediate station, much closer to matheran

The train is so small and poorly maintained that the engine driver has to come our of his box several times to ensure it is not derailing. highly unsafe and uncomfortable, kids might enjoy it though as they would care for only fun and not quality.

This toy train starts from Neral railway station which is on India's Central Railway -about 90 minutes train ride from near Mumbai .Tourists who come by cars/ taxis have to leave their vehicles in a Park outside this Mini Hill Station-internal transport is by hand pulled rickshaws and horses.There are 14 lovely scenic points and a lake around Matheran- there are many hotels of all budgets and tastes-wear comfy shoes for long walks- spare 3 days to stay here- watch out for monkeys!

At a distance of 5 km from Matheran Railway Station, Panorama point, also known as Sunrise Point, is one of the well known and highly admired vantage points near Matheran . It is a popular place to watch the sunrise. The point offers picturesque views of the Western Ghats and lush plains dotted with villages far below. It is one of the popular places of sightseeing in Matheran. It offers beautiful views of Prabalgad fort and distant views of Heart Point, Porcupine Point and Monkey Point. At a distance of 2 km from Matheran Railway Station, Alexander Point is one of the best places to visit in Matheran. This site is located in Madhavji road on the backdrop of green forests. Alexander point offers gorgeous views of Palasdari Lake, Rambaug Point, Garbut Point, Chowk Point, downhill village of Borgaon and the winding Ulhas River. At a distance of 4 km from Matheran Railway Station, Little Chowk Point is located towards the southernmost tip of Matheran Hill Station. The point gets its name from the Chowk town below which can be viewed from this point. Little Chowk Point is one of the popular tourist locations in Matheran and is highly appreciated for the outstanding views it offers. The small yet popular spot offers impressive views of the Sahyadri Ranges, Karnala Fort and the beautiful town of Panvel. It is the prime source of drinking water in the Matheran region. This 50 feet deep lake was built in 1956 AD. Water from this lake gets filtered and is supplied to the entire town of Matheran . Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of the Maratha Imperial architecture used in India in the bygone era. It tells the historical tale of the Maratha Kingdom as it has seen every event that occurred in Peshwas Life over time. It was built by the Peshwas’ symbolizing the brave hearts of the Marathas, who strived hard to keep its glory alive. Though the fort couldn’t tolerate the battering from the wrong time but the stone boundaries still recite the untold tales of the colourful journeys lead by the heroic Marathas.However, some ruins still remain reciting the remarkable stories and contorted tales. You can witness the enormous stone boundaries made to protect the beautiful Shaniwar Wada, which shows the level of security provided to the people of the kingdom. The walls have a magnificent wooden gate reflecting the Mughal architecture, which is another example of how secure the palace was made. There are long iron spikes tucked into the gate, which could reduce the attack of the enemy and kept elephants away.Besides this, you can see a garden which follows the style of the Mughal architecture. It also has a lovely fountain resembling a 16 petaled lotus, right in the middle of the garden. Adding to that, you can see the boundaries marked on the ground, which could tell about all the rooms. There is nothing more than this havoc of time, which changed the face of the mighty Shaniwar Wada into nothing. But you can still make these remains your window into the past to relive what has happened in history.History of Shaniwar Wada:The foundation stone of the Shaniwar Wada was laid in 1730 by Peshwa Bajirao I. Initially, it was intended to be a colossal palace of seven stories made out of stone. But the people of the national capital argued that only King can have a castle made of stone. So, the construction of Shaniwar Wada began using bricks. It took two years to complete this elegant structure, which displayed an excellent blend of the Maratha Imperial architecture with the Mughal architecture. The interiors had valuable furniture and decorations along with carvings of flowers and paintings of scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The first major fire in the year 1791 destroyed a significant part of the fort, which was re-constructed again. Then the next explosion in 1808 burnt all the necessary artifacts and documents in the palace. Then another fire in 1812 destroyed the upper two stories of the castle, followed by a fire in 1813 which destroyed the Royal Hall. All this destruction was taken to another level in the year 1818. The British attacked Shaniwar Wada, which resulted in collapsing all the top stories. Finally, in the year 1828, a fire caught the whole palace, which burned for a week and wrecked it. Architecture of Shaniwar Wada:Architecture of Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of Maratha style of construction blended with authentic Mughal architecture. The main gate, also known as Delhi Darwaza, is adorned with iron spikes to restrain the enemy attack as it is enormous enough to pass an elephant through it. There is a small aisle on the top of the door which has dome-shaped windows definitely taken from the Mughal architecture. Besides this gate, the Wada has four more gates, namely Mastani Darwaza, Khidki Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaja, and Narayan Darwaza. The walls have floral carvings and paintings resembling the Mughal architecture style. Scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata are also found painted at various significant spots. The windows and doors are also dome-shaped contributing to the traces of Mughal architecture. Archaeologists believe that initially, the fort was six-floored before it was destroyed by the fire. Finally, the garden has a 16 petaled lotus representing the grace of the bygone era.
