“Pet travel-Qatar Airways” Review of Qatar Airways

Highly recommend Qatar Airways for pet travel! Despite all the COvid restrictions and early check in at Kuwait and a 9 hour wait at LHR for paperwork and customs, my 9 month old husky arrived home happy and full of energy. She was definitely well taken care of especially during the 6 hour transit at Qatar.

They changed My Ticket for free due to covid circumstances. And the cabin crew was very very friendly and helpful to me. The hotline was strict, but helpful as well. Thank you very much dear qatar team.

The most terrible experience in my 25 years of flying. Worse customer service, the call center in India you can not understand anything that they are saying and and made several mistakes one of them didn't let me flying because if wrong booking by the customer disservice. I wish I read the reviews before booking. Choose a different airline, plus you gonna save money. 5 stars rating is a joke!!

When you travel with your pet cat or dog to an international destination , there are several things to do for a smooth and stress-free pet travel experience. After figuring out the pet import process for the country you are flying to, and making sure all the health checks and documentation are done, the next crucial step is to book your pet on a pet-friendly airline.

If you are planning to travel with your pet, here’s what you should know about the best pet-friendly airlines in the world. Read More

International Pet Travel Cost Explained

Life has a habit of throwing a curve ball at us. No matter how settled we are in our homes and our lives, there is sometimes the need to relocate internationally. Whether it be for work, for your loved ones or simply for a fresh start, you may be faced with the challenge of transporting your pet overseas - because of course no member of the family gets left behind.

But you are surely wondering how much is international pet travel going to cost ? Rest assured, we have you covered.

Costs to Consider When Flying a Dog or Cat Internationally

The cost to fly a dog internationally is considerably more than flying a person internationally, mainly because of the additional costs involved. When planning transport for your pet, consider the following:

  • Health check ups, medical certificates and vaccinations
  • Accommodation and boarding
  • Additional travel costs such as door to door transportation
  • Quarantine arrangements if applicable
  • Customs clearance on arrival
  • An appropriate crate carrier for your pet
  • Any travel amenities for your cat or dog on their journey

In order to make the journey as easy and stress-free as possible, it’s important to be prepared and not cut any corners. When it comes to international pet transportation , you get what you pay for. The health, safety and comfort of your pet shouldn’t be compromised so you should be as organised as possible before they board their flight to avoid any issues along the way.

So, How Much Does it Cost to Fly a Cat Internationally or a Dog Internationally?

Booking pet flights for your four legged friend overseas is non-negotiable when you are relocating internationally. But costs can vary greatly depending on the animal, breed, size and health requirements. So, how much does it cost to fly a dog or cat internationally ? As an estimate, it could cost anywhere between $1000 and $7500 - so it’s important to consider your budget and the options you have available. On average, the cost of transporting a cat is less than a dog. Remember, as your furry friend will have to be transported as cargo, these figures can change dramatically. If global freight charges increase or decrease, so will the cost of your pet’s flight.

Choose a Pet Transportation Company for Easy Relocation

When you are relocating overseas, whether it be for a short period of a few months or permanently, it can be a stressful process. Ensure that the relocation of your cat or dog goes smoothly by choosing an pet relocation company . Often, they will arrange all of the necessary documentation, ensure that your pet has customs clearance and monitor that your pet is healthy to fly, as well as accompany your pet throughout their journey.

Why is it important to book my pet on a pet-friendly airline?

Most airlines have several regulations in place that make your pet’s journey safe and secure. Though some policies such as heat embargoes , crate specifications and breed restrictions can be inconvenient for a pet parent, these rules are designed with the safety of your pet in mind. A pet-friendly airline will make sure your pet is stowed safely in the specially-designated space in the cargo hold. The airline will ensure your pet boards last and disembarks first from the plane, which is important because your pet must not spend too much time on the tarmac where the temperatures can be extreme.

Most pet-friendly airlines will allow pets to board only if the pet crate is IATA-compliant. The crate must be large enough for your pet to be able to stand up, lie down and turn around comfortably. Airlines have rules about the size of the crate, and will not allow your pet to board if the crate is too small or not well-ventilated.

A pet-friendly airline will have processes in place to ensure your pet is always a priority. The employees are trained to handle animals and have the safety and welfare of your pet at heart. Booking your furry friend on a pet-friendly airline with zero-harm policies is one of the most important factors to consider during international pet transport. It will go a long way in ensuring your pet has a stress-free pet travel experience.

Here are some of the best pet-friendly airlines in the world:

Emirates Airlines

Emirates Airlines flies pet dogs, cats, pet birds and falcons under the Emirates SkyCargo programme. Pets cannot fly in the cabin unless it is a service animal or a falcon flying between Dubai and Pakistan. Pets fly in the specially-designed cargo hold and are offered the best care and services. Emirates Airlines has special facilities in Dubai for your pets during transit with dedicated staff to make sure your pet is safe and well-cared for.

The cargo hold where your pet will fly is temperature-controlled and well-ventilated for a pleasant and stress-free travel experience. Emirates SkyCargo does not have a limit on the number of pets that can fly at a time.

Air Canada Cargo focusses on the comfort and safety of travelling pets. The airline has specially-trained staff to care for the pets and designated holding facilities for your pet’s comfort. The airline has transport vehicles dedicated to travelling pets and designated agents to help with the bookings. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Air Canada has temporarily stopped accepting shipments of cats and dogs.

Virgin Australia

Virgin Australia flies pets in the cargo hold of the aircraft; only service animals are allowed to travel in the cabin. The cargo hold is well-ventilated and is safe and comfortable for your pet. The temperature is maintained similar to the temperature in the passenger cabin of the aircraft.

Pets can travel to most domestic destinations in Australia on this airline. Virgin Australia has policies in place to ensure your pet flies in an appropriate sized crate. Pets flying in crates that are too small and not ventilated enough will not be allowed to board.

Virgin Australia flies only pet cats and dogs; other animals can fly on Virgin Australia Air Cargo. Only two pets per person are allowed in a flight. Virgin Australia has placed a temporary ban on flying snub-nosed breeds until further notice for safety reasons.

British Airways

British Airways is one of the most pet-friendly airlines in the world; they have well-defined regulations in place to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet. The airline flies pets only in the cargo hold, and every pet must be accompanied by a health certificate issued by a vet. The safe and secure temperature-controlled cargo hold is unlit so pets are not overstimulated and can settle down quickly.

Pets must fly in IATA-approved crates only. Snub-nosed dogs and cats travelling on British Airways need a travel crate that is 10% larger than the minimum size to ensure proper ventilation. British Airways has temperature embargoes in place during winters when the weather is extreme.

Australia’s national carrier Qantas is excellent for pet travel. Qantas transports pets to several countries around the world. Pets can fly in the cargo hold, which is temperature-controlled and dimly-lit to encourage your pets to sleep during the flight. Qantas has temperature embargoes in place to make sure your pets are safe if they are travelling during extreme weather conditions. Brachycephalic breeds can fly on Qantas flights as long as they are healthy and meet all health conditions. These breeds must be booked through pet travel specialists.

There is no limit on the number of pets you can transport internationally on Qantas. On domestic journeys, ticketed customers can transport two pet crates per person.

Qantas makes sure your pet is looked after well during the flight and in transit. Your pet is continuously supervised in the holding area, and their water is topped up as required. If your pet’s flight is delayed, Qantas will assign your pet to an experienced animal care company where your pet can relax and have a comfort stop before resuming their journey.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic , Qantas has significantly reduced the number of domestic and international flights, and your pet might have to wait longer to secure a booking.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways flies pet cats and dogs in the cargo hold of the aircraft and as checked baggage over its extensive flight network spanning Europe, Middle East, Africa, the United States and the Far East.

Pet falcons are allowed in the cabin; a maximum of six falcons are permitted in the aircraft. Qatar Airways cares for the safety of your pets and do not accept cats and dogs that are younger than 12 weeks old on their flights.

If your pet is transiting through Doha, they are allowed out of the crate in a safe environment for a comfort stop. The travel crates will be cleaned before your pets resume their journey. Qatar Airways has breed restrictions and do not accept some cat and dog breeds such as Pugs, Boston Terriers, exotic cats, Shar Pei, Pekingese, etc. that are susceptible to extreme temperatures.

Qatar Airways is accepting pets on board during the coronavirus pandemic, though at a significantly reduced capacity.

Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand accepts pet dogs and cats on both international and domestic flights. The airline has one of the best standards of safety in the world, and your pet is assured of a safe and comfortable journey on Air New Zealand. The airline continually reviews their safety standards to ensure all pets receive the highest level of care and comfort.

If your pet is flying an international route, they will travel as cargo and not checked baggage. Pets must be booked with an airline-approved pet transporter or an IATA agent. If your pet is flying on a domestic route, they can travel as checked baggage.

Air New Zealand is committed to following all the guidelines laid down by IATA for the transport of live animals. Only pets travelling in IATA-compliant travel crates are accepted on Air New Zealand flights.

Planning international pet travel? Call the pet transport specialists

International pet travel is not always easy for a pet parent, especially if they are in the middle of an international move themselves. The process is long and sometimes convoluted, depending on the destination country. Most of the steps in the process are time-bound and have to be finished on schedule for your pet to be able to enter the destination country.

Flying on a pet-friendly airline takes away a large part of the stress of the pet travel for both the pet and the pet parent. If you are planning to fly with your pet to an international location and you are not sure on which airline to book your flight, get in touch with the team at Petraveller for more insight on pet-friendly airlines and a detailed pet travel itinerary.

Flying with Pets: A Complete Guide to Pet-Friendly Airlines

qatar airways pet travel reviews

Pet owners invariably find it difficult to leave their furry companions at home when they travel.    Flying with pets has become increasingly popular as airlines embrace the opportunity to share a travel experience or relocation with our constant companions. While the experience will be rewarding for pet owners and pets alike, the process is complicated and takes meticulous planning to ensure a stress-free and safe journey for you and your beloved family pet.

For many, a pet is also an “emotional support” – and many airlines – especially in the USA treat them differently too.

There is much to consider before taking a pet with you on a flight, but with thorough research and preparation, your pets will thank you for taking the time to make their journey safe and comfortable. Airlines differ in their approach to pet travel and have individual rules and guidelines to follow. The process can be lengthy and daunting for first-time pet travellers, so we have compiled this guide to help you through the complex and varied processes involved and provide some of the best airlines to research to make your journey one to remember rather than forget.

The BusinessClass.com Guide to Flying with Pets:

Employee at the aircraft takes care of passengers pet

Where will my pet be housed during the flight?

On the whole, pets, including dogs, cats, and other animals, fly in a pressurised and air-conditioned hold of the same aircraft as the owner and inside appropriately sized, secure kennels or containers depending on the animal. The environment is calming, with similar conditions to the passenger cabin. The holds are often dimly lit and undisturbed to avoid unnecessary animal stress. Each airline has specific local guidelines and also adheres to the International Air Transport Association's regulations for the transportation of animals. Such rules include the assurance of appropriate-sized kennels and containers to allow the free movement of animals. Some airlines assist customers with the selection of containers, while others leave the responsibility to the owner. In any event, strict measurement and weight limit information is available on each airline's website.

Petite dog waiting in travel bag for a fligth

Many airlines allow smaller dogs – typically under 8 kilogrammes and small enough to fit inside a pet-friendly travel bag under the seat ahead – to travel with the owners in the cabin. However, it is not universal amongst airlines and may not always be the best environment for your pet in any event. Your pet will have to remain inside the pet travel bag throughout the journey, and there will be far more to distract your small pet in the main cabin. It will be noisy, the owner may transfer their travel anxieties onto their pet, and there is no Plan B if your pet becomes distressed and anxious.

Pet places on aircraft are limited, and not all aircraft or cabins will have the capacity or space to house a travelling pet. Research diligently and book your pet's flight tickets well before travel dates to ease the process and prevent disappointment.

Essential steps to take before your pet travels in the aircraft:

Flying can be very stressful for animals, and your beloved pet must be deemed fit to fly before undertaking what could be an arduous journey for you and your pet. Though health problems caused by air travel are unlikely and, thankfully, extremely rare, your pet will have to undergo a series of compulsory veterinary processes for international travel. Costs will vary depending on the animal and breed.

Your pet will undergo a  comprehensive health check . The healthier the pet, the more likely it will cope with the stresses of air travel and quickly bounce back. Any underlying health or weight issues will increase the pet's vulnerability during a lengthy flight.

Your pet will require  appropriate vaccinations  depending on the requirements of the international destination. This could take the form of a series of treatments. Always discuss your travel plans with your family veterinary practice at an early stage to ensure you allow sufficient time to begin the vaccination process, which could be lengthy.

Your pet will be  treated against parasites . Pet import regulations vary depending on the destination, and your pet may require a course of treatments within a specific travel timeframe. Again, seek the advice of your veterinary practice.

Two Golden Retriever's waiting to fly with Turkish Airlines

Your pet is advised to have  microchip implantation . Ensure all database details are current, especially owner details, as customs officials will use a microchip reader to process your pet during their journey. A microchip will also be a safety net should you become unexpectedly separated from your pet.

Your vet will help complete the necessary paperwork to ensure your pet is given a valid  Animal Health Certificate , mandatory within the E.U., or an equivalent pet passport for other destinations outside the E.U. This process will include any significant medical history and vaccination status. A lot of paperwork is required to travel with pets, and everything must be clearly detailed. Allow yourself the time to complete the paperwork accurately.

Buy the best  airline-approved pet carrier/kennel  and familiarise your pet with the carrier or kennel far ahead of the flight to reduce stress on your pet. Ensure your carrier meets your airline's guidelines, as these may differ. Many airlines offer approved carriers and kennels for an additional cost.

Dog standing beside a pink and white canine suite

Many airlines allow  recognised service dogs  to travel for free in the same cabin as the owner. However, emotional support dogs are not generally included in this category and must travel with other pets in the hold. Check your airline's service dog travel policy in the early stages of planning a flight to see if your dog is eligible to travel with you in the cabin.

It can be expensive to fly with animals, and prices can vary significantly between airlines and based on the type of animal, breed, size and weight. Below we list the popular airlines offering a pet-friendly travel service with some key features to note.

American Airlines

The United States airline restricts pet travel to cats and dogs only on flights of up to 12 hours (including the time taken with customs) and strictly within  specific destinations , not including transatlantic flights.

The airline sometimes allows pets to travel as a paid and checked pet carry-on, though this is restricted to the animal breed, size, age and destination. Pet owners must provide a suitable kennel small enough to fit under the seat in front, and the animal must remain inside for the duration of the flight. In this instance, the kennel and animal will be the maximum carry-on luggage. In all other cases, pets must travel with  American Airlines Cargo . Due to space limitations, carry-on pets are not permitted in First or Business Class on certain Boeing 777s and 787s.

Fully-trained  service animals  are permitted to travel in the cabin free of charge.

View the airline's website on  pet travel  for full terms and conditions and up-to-date pricing.

A guy walking with a cat in his backpack

Dubai-based airline Emirates has a dedicated pet-friendly service called  Emirates Pets  with Emirates SkyCargo, specifically designed to ensure the highest levels of care for your pets while strictly adhering to the International Air Transport Association's Live Animal Regulations (IATA LAR). Dubai Airport, by nature of its location, is often used during transit, and Emirates has an excellent facility for animals arriving or departing in transit with veterinary support if required. A minimum of six hours of connection time is needed in Dubai for optimum transit care. Your pets will be fed, cleaned and exercised as requested by the owner.

As with other airlines, there are  restrictions to specific breeds  of dogs and cats that will not be allowed for carriage on Emirates SkyCargo. Further conditions apply for the import of dangerous dogs and their hybrids, though these will be permitted for transit with the appropriate approval of the destination country. Service dogs can travel in the cabin with the owner – check with the airline directly for more information.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

The Dutch airline is an excellent choice for  flying with a cat or dog . Pets should be no younger than 15 weeks of age, and snub-nosed animals are restricted from flying with KLM. Passengers may bring one cat or dog into the cabin when travelling within Europe. However, they must fit inside a closed pet travel bag or kennel and be small enough to fit under the seat in front. The pet and travel container can weigh no more than 8 kilogrammes. In this instance, up to three pets (of the same litter and each up to 6 months old) may travel in the hold and share a kennel of an approved size if they weigh less than 14 kilogrammes each. Individual or sharing animals, including the kennel, must weigh at most 75 kilogrammes. Read the  handy guide  to preparing for your pet's trip.

There are exceptions to travelling with pets, including transfer times over 3 hours, any flights operated by Boeing 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft, and snub-nosed cats and dogs due to potential difficulties breathing.

The costs are competitive and will vary depending on the departure and destination airports. Pet reservations are  made directly  via the KLM website. Owners can apply to have  trained service dogs  in the cabin free of charge. However, emotional support dogs are transported in cargo.

Qantas Airlines

Travelling with a pet on Qantas can only be booked through Qantas Freight  Pet Travel Specialists  via the airline's website.

The pet travel specialists make sure appropriate containers are used and ensure compliance with the origin, transit stops, and quarantine requirements of the destination. They also provide vet checks. Service dogs can be carried in the passenger cabin; however, all other animals must be transported in a special area in the aircraft's hold where noise levels and air temperature are similar to the passenger cabins.

Unlike some other airlines, Brachycephalic breeds – also known as snub-nose breeds – can travel with Qantas following the airline's  pet travel policy . All animals must be over 12 weeks old with veterinary approval of fitness to fly.

It is advised to book your pet's travel before your ticket, as not all aircraft can accommodate pet travel, and the owner must supply appropriate pet crates unless booked through a pet travel specialist. Read the airline's handy  Pet Travel – FAQs  for more tips and advice.

Qatar Airways

Doha-based Qatar Airways accepts domesticated dogs, cats and birds as checked baggage on the same or alternative flights per international air travel regulations. All pets must be booked at least 48 hours before flights, and the airline has a handy  submission form  to assist the process. Service dogs will be allowed in the passenger cabin, free of charge on select routes only, and where not permitted, service dogs will be transported as checked baggage free of charge in the aircraft hold. Falcons may also be carried in the Economy Class passenger cabin.

Pet owners must provide  suitable containers  to transport their pets in the cabin or cargo hold and enough food and water for the animal's journey.

The ground service crew at Doha will care for all animals in transit and will ensure they are fed (every three to four hours), watered and exercised between flights. Qatar Airways does not accept certain breeds of dogs and cats susceptible to heat stroke due to having a snub-, pug-nose, or other stated animals in the airline's list of  restricted animals .

Air Canada allows cats and small dogs to travel as one standard baggage item in the passenger cabin. The carrier must be small enough to fit in the space beneath the seat ahead and be large enough to allow the animal to stand, turn around and lie down. The current cost of cabin pet transportation is CAD$ 50 within Canada and CAD$ 100 for international flights in each direction. Larger animals are carried in the cargo hold for additional costs and have a maximum weight limit of 45 kilograms (100 pounds) for the pet and container combined. Size restrictions also apply. Contact  Air Canada Cargo  if animals weigh more than the specified limits and arrange specialist transportation of other larger animals, including horses.

Air Canada places restrictions on animals flying to specific locations in the hold when the summer temperature reaches 29.5 degrees centigrade or 85 degrees Fahrenheit and restrictions on peak winter travel due to increased passenger and cargo loads. Air Canada does not allow the following  Brachycephalic (short/snub-nosed) breeds  of cats and dogs to be transported due to the increased risk of heat stroke and breathing problems. The following list of  strong dogs  must also be transported in special reinforced containers.

Trained service dogs can accompany their owner in the cabin for free if it meets the requirements of the  Air Canada Medical Assistance Desk . Emotional support animals are not permitted in the cabin. Full details of  travelling with pets  can be found on the airline's website.

TAP Air Portugal

The Portuguese flag carrier is an excellent airline for safely transporting pets with the bonus of  earning extra miles  for TAPMiles&Go customers. Pets are carried in the  cabin  or the  hold  depending on several factors, including breed, size, age and aircraft availability. Passengers are advised to request the pet transport service at least 48 hours before the flight and preferably at the time of booking. All pets must have a microchip I.D., an E.U. pet passport and a valid anti-rabies vaccination. TAP is prohibited from transporting pets to the United Kingdom, except for service animals. See  all requirements  for flights outside of the E.U. member states.

Dogs and cats of up to 8 kilograms or 17 pounds (including the carrier) can be carried within the cabin when stored beneath the seat if the carrier is within specific dimensions. Flights with a stopover may require the animal to be transported in the hold for part of the journey. The costs of pet travel will depend on the route. The price of pets in the hold depends on the animal's weight and the route. Trained service dogs can travel with their owner in the cabin.

Brachycephalic breeds  of cats and dogs, including crossbreeds listed, are not permitted to travel unless proven safe to travel from a veterinary declaration. Dogs considered 'potentially dangerous' must meet special  conditions of transport . Read more about  travelling with a pet  on TAP Air Portugal.

Cat in a grey box and a lady holding the cat

German flag carrier Lufthansa offers a carry-on cabin and cargo hold service depending on the kind of animal, its weight, size and compliance with regulations of different countries. Lufthansa Cargo also transports animals as air freight. Passengers wishing to take small dogs or cats in the cabin must meet requirements, such as a weight limit of no more than 8 kilograms (including the carrier) and no more than two pets in either the cabin or the hold – inside one carrier in the cabin or one to two carriers in the hold. All dogs and cats must be older than 12 weeks or 15 weeks for transportation to/from Germany. Passengers can  register cabin pets  via the airline's website and read about  transporting animals  in the aircraft.

Qualified  assistance dogs  can travel free of charge with their owners in the cabin. However, snub-nosed breeds of cats and dogs are not permitted to travel due to the increased risk of breathing problems. Fighting or dangerous dogs will be transported inside special crates in the hold. An exception to this is when such breeds are between three and six months old, at which time they may travel in the cabin as long they comply with the requirements of cabin travel. Read the  Lufthansa information  about travelling with snub-nosed and fighting dog breeds. All pets must be carried per IATA regulations. The owner is responsible for supplying  approved carrying containers  for their pets, as it is unlikely to purchase them at the airport. Pets are permitted in Lufthansa lounges but should be kept within their transport carrier or container throughout.

Small pets able to travel with their owners in the cabin include small dogs, cats, rabbits, tortoises and hedgehogs so long as they do not weigh greater than 8 kilograms, including the carrier, which must also fit beneath the seat in front – though no pets can travel in the long-haul Business Class cabin due to space limitations.  All assistance and service dogs will travel in the cabin free of charge, regardless of their size and weight, but emotional support dogs are not permitted in the cabin and must travel in the hold.

Larger dogs and ferrets will travel in the hold of the passenger aircraft, but the combined weight of the dog and container must be lower than 75 kilogrammes. If this weight is exceeded, the pet must travel as Finnair-operated cargo . Some destination countries will also stipulate that pets travel in cargo regardless of weight. One cabin pet carrier is permitted per passenger; typically, no more than two pets are allowed in the cabin per flight.

Fees are paid before travel and vary depending on the size of the pet and destination. Typically, pet transportation in the cabin costs approximately €120 each way and pets in the hold cost around €600 each way. Refer to the Finnair Cargo webpage for cargo fees. Read the Finnair FAQs of travelling with animals .

What methods of transport does Qatar Airways provide for my pet?

With the exception of falcons and service dogs, animals are not allowed in the cabin during any flight and will be required to check-in at the cargo terminal. Falcons are allowed only in Economy Class and must be hooded for the entire journey. Customers are limited to carrying only one falcon aboard the flight. A chain or cord must be attached to one of the bird’s legs and tied securely to the handler to prevent the bird from flying.

Coming home to a loyal pet like a dog or cat is one of the best feelings in the world. For most pet owners, pets are like family members who offer unconditional love and company. Pet owners would naturally want to take their pets when they move to a new country like Qatar.

Indeed, pet ownership in Qatar is not as common as in the West, but there are many pet owners in Qatar. You can rest assured that finding veterinary clinics or other services for your pets in Doha won’t be difficult.

Before planning to bring pets to Qatar, you should know about certain breeds of dogs that are banned in Qatar. Dogs of the following breeds (list in alphabetical order) are not allowed to be imported to Qatar:

  • Bull Terrier
  • Chinese Shar-Pei
  • Japanese Akita

The following are the requirements for importing a pet to Qatar:

1. Microchip

First, your pet must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant (ISO 11784/11785) chip. The microchip must be scanned after implantation, and the number must be recorded correctly on all your pet’s documents, including vaccination records. You would also need a letter or certificate with the microchip details.

2. Vaccination Records

It is important to have your pet’s rabies vaccination up-to-date at least 30 days before entering the country. You should also obtain a Rabies Serology Certificate, indicating the pet has passed the RNATT (Rabies Neutralizing Antibody Titre Test) from a recognized laboratory.

All dogs travelling to Qatar must be vaccinated with DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus).

In the case of cats , they should also be vaccinated with FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia) or Fel O Vax.

All vaccination should be done within the last 12 months or a minimum of 30 days before arrival .

3. International Health Certificate

You need to ask your veterinarian to issue you an International Certificate of Good Health . This certificate is called APHIS Form 7001 in the US.

  • This certificate must be issued or certified by a government body and should be in the English language.
  • It must be issued within ten days of departure and issued separately from the passport pages.

4. Import Permit (From Qatar)

Before importing the pet to Qatar, you must obtain an Import Permit from the Livestock Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME).

The import permit should be issued no later than 30 days prior to the animal’s arrival in Qatar.

Note that import permits are only available to pets who are over four months old .

The application must be accompanied by supporting documentation, which includes proof of vaccination against rabies, and laboratory reports for rabies titre tests. The pet’s microchip number should be clearly visible on all supporting documentation.

How To Apply For Pets Import Permit Online

  • Go to the Animal Certificates page on Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) website .
  • Enter your Qatar ID number and mobile number (for individuals).
  • Fill out the data in the form, and submit the application.
  • You will receive the system messages on the registered email address.

Alternatively you can try this web page on MME website . For this page you will need to login using the Tawtheeq NAS authentication .

You can also submit the import certificate application in person or through someone else as explained below:

How To Apply For Pets Import Permit Offline

  • Visit the Customer Service Office at the Municipality or Government Services Complexes.
  • Provide a copy and an original of the customer’s and the applicant’s Qatar ID card .
  • You must also submit the other documents mentioned above.
  • Sign the service terms and conditions.
  • The permit is normally issued in one working day and is valid for 30 days.

For enquiries, you can call (974) 44261656 or 44263639.

The following documents are required to import your pets:

  • Pet owner’s Passport copy and QID / Visa
  • Microchip details (date placed, location, number)
  • Vaccination Records
  • Rabies Serology Certificate (Titer Test Result)
  • International Health Certificate
  • Import Permit from Qatar officials
  • A Letter of Intent signed by the owner would be required for cargo clearance.

With most airlines, pets can be checked in as baggage or air cargo, with one pet per person allowed. You must transport your pet in a carrier/kennel approved by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Sample Carrier To Bring Pets To Qatar

Pets are allowed entry to Qatar via Hamad International Airport in Doha. Qatar Airways accepts domestic animals as checked baggage as long as they are in good health and meet all transport requirements. For more details, check the Qatar Airways page on travelling with pets .

If you decide to bring pets to Qatar, you should confirm the breed with your vet and contact the airline beforehand. Some airlines allow smaller pets to be carried onboard. You need to check this with your airline in advance.

You need to check in your pet at the baggage check-in area and pay the excess baggage fees at the airport. If your pet is transported as cargo, the airline authorities will take care of the pet.

Because of the complexity of the paperwork and the strict biosecurity rules, using the services a professional pet relocation company is highly recommended.

They can help apply for an import permit on your behalf and even pick up and deliver from the airport. You may need to start contacting them well in advance and discussing quotes with multiple providers.

Here are some of the pet relocation specialists in Doha:

In addition to the above requirements, other conditions apply to specific types of pets, such as birds, rabbits, fish, rodents, and invertebrates. To enter Qatar, these pets must also have an import permit and health certificate. Please contact a pet relocation company for more details.

  • Before renting an apartment in Qatar , check with your landlord if pets are allowed in the building.
  • Generally, dogs are not allowed in public places , including most parks and the Corniche.
  • Some beaches allow dogs, but they must be leashed at all times.
  • Animals other than assistance dogs are not allowed on Doha Metro and Lusail Tram network, even if they’re in cages.
  • Stray cats are plenty in Qatar, but stray dogs are very rare. The Police and Animal Resources are authorized to catch and handle stray dogs. Do not let your pets leave your home without someone accompanying them.
  • It is recommended that pet owners identify their pets with tags and microchips.

Hi everyone,

I’m moving from Chile to Cambodia and I have a flight from Brazil to Thailand with Qatar airways with a stopover in Doha. Can my big dog go through Qatar in transit and what documentation would she need for her trip through Doha?

Kind regards,

How much does it cost to apply for an import permit from Ministry of Municipality and Environment for a cat?

Hi Mhay, It is not very expensive, but you need to check directly to know the amount.

hello. which airlines allow me to travel with my pug to be relocated in Qatar. I’m currently living in China. thanks

Hi Jimena, Unfortunately, Qatar Airways does not allow pugs ( https://www.qatarairways.com/en/help/faq.html#1003076-are-there-any-health-breed-or-age-restrictions ). You need to check directly with other airlines that are coming from China.

Hello .. do I have to wait 90 days after the rabies serology test in order to bring my cat to Qatar ?

Hi Alaa, Please check with the Qatar Government Helpline at 109 or [email protected] .

Good day, Can I bring my dog in Qatar with complete documents thru travelling byland? Thank you.

Hello sir/ i am in qutar now. My wife will come qutar around january or march so could i know if my wife comes here she can bring her pet (cat) with hand laggege or cargo service ? Plz could you expln it. Thank you .

Hi, I have a question I am from Qatar and I heard that they don’t allow you to import a dog to the country if you are a Qatari. I have my dog coming from abroad it has all the vaccine and documentation but it still needs import paper. If extra procedures please let me know.

Hi Fatima, Unfortunately we don’t know about such a restriction for Qataris (nothing is mentioned on the official website). Kindly check with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment. It would be great if you can share your experience here so that we can update others. Thanks

Hi Sir/Madam

I get a work contract to reallocate to qatar and I have an Akita breed dog and I heard it is banned in qatar, my dog is 3 years old and very peaceful and I can’t move without him as no one will take care about him and I am so attached to him. Is there any extra procedure to import him. Please answer

Hi Ruba, Kindly contact Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 or [email protected]

Hi, our dog is currently in Khobar, Saudi Arabia. He’s supposed to be here last week but the flight’s cargo has no ac that’s why he couldn’t come, and for this reason we have to request a new import paper, export request, and vet health certificate. Is it possible to enter Qatar by land? Or the first entry of pets should be thru the airport?

Hi Vanessa, Please check with the Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 or [email protected] .

Hello, I have a couple of questions. First, I have read that Qatar has a one pet per person per year policy. Is this calendar year, or year of residence? My husband and I have 3 cats, I am traveling there this week and my husband is following in January. Ostensibly, if it is by calendar year, I can bring one of my cats over next fall, and then next spring both my husband and I can sponsor a cat. Second, does the limited pet policy refer to all pets, or just cats and dogs? I also have two reptiles I would like to bring over. Finally, are there any limitations on the transport of reptiles, particularly snakes, via Qatari airlines?

Hi Mae, For these questions, there is limited info on the official websites. Kindly contact the Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 or [email protected] .

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out to you with an important request for my family. My husband and I are thrilled to announce that we will be relocating to Qatar for work. As we prepare for our move from China to Doha, we are also planning to bring along our beloved family members – our two lovely dogs. However, our agent in China has informed us that currently, it is not possible to import family pet dogs into Qatar. This poses a significant problem for us, as my husband needs to relocate for work and we wish to bring our entire family with us.

I kindly request your assistance with this matter. Your guidance and expertise would mean the world to us in finding a solution. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider our situation.

Warm regards,

Magali Navarro

Hi Magali, Congratulations on your move. Regarding the updated policy for pets please contact the Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 or [email protected] . You can also check with any pet-relocation company mentioned in this article.

Hi, How long can a “Resident since 2020” dog leave Qatar for a holiday? Have the return formalities changed? Thanks

Hi Nadia, Unfortunately we couldn’t find an answer to this as official websites have limited information. Please contact the Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 or [email protected] .

thank you for your help

Hi Nadia, Have you received any answer from the helpline? If yes, kindly share so that it would help others.

Hi all, The website link given above (How to apply for pets import permit online) is not working. Do you have another one please ? Thanks for all

Hi Stephane, Since the MME website has changed, we have updated the article with new links (two options are given). Please try them and let us know if they work.

Complexity of paper work? Vaccination records and titer test is done at the vet. Literally don’t have to do anything and the export and/or import permit takes 10 minutes at the ministry of environment. What is the current age requirement for kittens to be imported. It used to be 4 months but I read 7 months(?) somewhere..

Hi Finn, Glad to know that you could get the permit in 10 minutes. Would be helpful to others if you can share how did you apply. Regarding age of kittens, we believe it is 4 months. Can’t find any official announcement about this.

My husband and I have 3 cats between us. Is there any flexibility on the one pet per person policy? Additionally, I read that the policy was one pet per person per year. Does this mean I can bring a third cat after 1 year passes? Additionally where can I find more info on importing reptiles?

Hi Mae, Unfortunately the official website has limited info on this. May be you can contact the following numbers: (974) 44261656, 44263639

How much would all this cost in qatari riyal for two cats ?

Hi Hamna, It will depend on from where you are bringing. Please check with any pet relocation company. Some contacts are in the article.

Since 30 May 2023 dog imports are banned in Qatar. Do you have any information about this. Could the ban be temporary or will this be on a permanent basis.

Hi Rob, This should be a temporary ban.

So myself and the wife have QIDs. Can I just fly alone to the UK and back to Doha with my two dogs and bring them back to Qatar? They have all the pre requisites in place, vaccinations etc. Or is it one dog per passenger ? What if you are assigning the two dogs to separate QIDs ? Confusing🤔

Hi Chris, You can assign both dogs under two QIDs.

my two little cats is 4 month and i am going to mumbai .can i support you my cats flaying with me how many cost in qatar airport.

Hi Shifa, Please contact any pet relocation company for more details.

Qatar Airways flying with pets

Does qatar airways accept passengers traveling with pets.

Pets may travel on Qatar Airways flights as excess baggage or in the passenger cabin , and the airline strives to extend its 5-star service to your furry and feathered friends.  Passengers traveling with pets will not be able to connect from another airline to a Qatar Airways flight  because pets will not be accepted as excess baggage. Pets can only be transported separately, as cargo, when connecting from another airline to Qatar Airways.

Which pets are accepted on Qatar Airlines flights in the passenger cabin and which in the baggage hold?

Only falcons and Service Dogs are accepted in the passenger cabin , but various restrictions may apply.

Domesticated dogs, cats, and birds can travel on the same flight as the passenger, as excess baggage . All other animals will only be transported as cargo.

For the safety of the animal, certain breeds of domestic dogs and cats that are susceptible to an increased risk of heat stroke are not accepted on Qatar Airways flights . These breeds include mainly pure breeds of snub-nosed dogs and cats (e.g. Burmese, Himalayan, Persian, American Staffordshire Terrier, Brussels Griffon, Chow Chow, English Bulldog, King Charles Spaniel, Pug, Shar-Pei, Shih Tzu, Tibetan Spaniel, Bulldog, Japanese Boxer, etc.).

Falcons in the Passenger Cabin

Falcons  are  accepted   only  in  the Economy  Class  cabin . There is a limit of one falcon per passenger and a limit of 6 birds allowed in the passenger cabin . Carriage of falcons in the passenger cabin on a Qatar Airways flight is not allowed on flights to/from Tunis .

Excess baggage fees apply for transporting falcons on Qatar Airways flights:

Pets in the Baggage Hold

Regarding health and age restrictions, Qatar Airways will not accept :

  • Animals younger than 12 weeks .
  • Fragile/weak animals.
  • Female animals with suckling young unless a veterinary certificate , stating that mother and young are fit for travel, is provided .
  • Female cats/dogs more than 6 weeks pregnant unless a veterinary certificate , stating that there is no risk of birth during the journey and also that the animal is fit for travel, is provided .

On Qatar Airways flights, there is no limit for the number of pets that can travel in the baggage hold. However, based on aircraft type, weight or space limitations may apply .

Pets must travel in containers , and the container must have ventilation openings, be of sufficient strength to prevent escape, and of an adequate size. If the container seems to be too small for the animal, Qatar Airways reserves the right to refuse transportation. Containers with total dimensions larger than 118 inches (300 cm) are transported only as cargo .

Passengers are responsible for providing enough food and water for the animal’s journey in the traveling container. However, Qatar Airways ground services team will provide food and fresh water for your animal if your journey includes a transit in Doha. Although it is not possible to access your pet during the journey, Qatar Airways ground staff will take care of your pet during your transfer in Doha :

  • Animals will be allowed out of their kennels to walk and stretch.
  • Animals will be observed for signs of sickness and stress.
  • Kennels will be cleaned.
  • Animals will be provided a larger, more comfortable kennel during transit.
  • Food will be provided every 3-4 hours, up to 2 hours before departure.
  • Water will be changed every hour.

Qatar Airways will charge an excess baggage fee for pets traveling as checked baggage. Regardless of whether or not you exceed your free checked baggage allowance, charges will be assessed per container, depending on its size (total linear dimensions) and weight :

  • Medium – up to 32 kg.
  • Large – 32-75 kg.

Service Dogs

One service dog, psychiatric service dog or emotional support dog per passenger will be accepted free of charge . Service Dogs are accepted in the passenger cabin on flights operated by Qatar Airways only on certain routes (e.g., to/from the US, the EU, Norway, Switzerland). On all other flights , Service Dogs may only travel in the baggage compartment , also free of charge .

Passengers who plan to travel with a Service Dog must notify Qatar Airways at least 48 hours before departure and check in at least 2 hours prior to departure (3 hours when departing from the US) . Also, evidence that the accompanying dog will not need to relieve itself during the flight must be provided. Passengers must also bring absorbent material and provide evidence that they can manage the dog’s waste without creating any sanitation and health issues on the flight. Certification from a licensed mental health professional is required for emotional support or psychiatric service dogs.

Qatar Airways recommends the use of a safety harness during take-off, landing, or whenever the “fasten seat belt” sign is illuminated. If the Service Dog cannot be accommodated at your seat location, then you will be offered another seat if available on the aircraft. However, your Service Dog cannot affect the leg space in front of the passenger sitting next to you or obstruct an aisle or the emergency exit area.

“Travel with pet dog” Review of Qatar Airways

I traveled with my dog two months ago from Helsinki to Kathmandu. I am very dissatisfied with the services provided. I had to pay a large amount of money for my pet's transportation. Since Qatar Airways is now operated by Finnair, there was a lack of proper assistance. One airline told me to contact Qatar Airways, while the other said to contact Finnair because I was traveling from Finland. It was very stressful, and I had to book animal transfer agencies myself. There was no coordination between the two airlines. I had to pay four times the normal amount for my dog's travel to ensure her safety and comfort, and it's good that she received the best services after paying such a high price. However, I had a terrible experience with both Finnair and Qatar Airways. There was a complete lack of communication and coordination between the two airlines

Due to a change of circumstances, we needed to change the origin for our outbound flight (only - return remained the same). Called Qatar and was told they were unable to help and that we would need to cancel the whole flight including return leg and re-book - if of course there were any seats available from Europe during the summer school holidays. Were more than happy to pay for any additional costs to fly from a different destination but this option is not allowed. Qatar helpline the most unhelpful staff we have ever come across and the call centre operator could not even advise on details of refund for our flight - and they work for Qatar. We were told to go online and find out these details ourselves. NEVER EVER fly with this "world-wide" airline as they only arrange flights by zones and you cannot change that zone under any circumstances without cancelling your whole flight. We thought booking directly with this airline would remove any issues should we need to change due unforeseen circumstances - not the case at all. Avoid at all costs and use a reputable airline.

Lost my flight while literally queuing for the flight. Nobody even asked if there is someone left. All of a sudden the screens change from Qatar to a different airline. Never seen this in any other airline. Stay away from them Called the call center for rescheduling, didn't even listen properly to what I had to say. Shameful

The check In process was smooth & quick. The counter staff were very courteous. The Exec Lounge was average - no sofas for stretching legs and having a nap. The Flight Boarding process was very good - very courteous and quick. The flight seating was very comfortable. Food was very average...While the service quality was impressive, the variety and quality and taste of the meals were very average. Also the Hostesses were not offering anything on their own (like drinks, snacks etc) - one had to get up and ask, if anything was available. The variety of In Flight Entertainment was good. The handling of Checked in baggage was efficient

I pre-ordered a particular type of food from their list for my dietary requirements. They tried to give me cheese, saying it was my order. No, it wasn't. It took half an hour to find my food. The sandwich for the second part of the flight wasn't there. They again tried to give me cheese. So I didn't have anything for the second part of the flight. The staff were apologetic, and to be fair, it wasn't their fault my food wasn't on the plane. Please try to do better.
