Water of Leith, river through the city

Walking and cycling route.

This is Edinburgh’s main river , traversing the north of the city, starting in the Pentland hills, and ending in Leith, where it flows into the Firth of Forth.

You can explore the length of the river by following the path running alongside it, 20km in length, by walking or cycling . Most of this route is surrounded by natural scenery, allowing you to forget that you’re in the middle of a big city!

If you don’t have time for the whole route , then try the stretch between the Dean Village and Leith , which takes just over an hour to walk.

You might also like to explore the area between Balerno and Slateford, which runs along an old railway line , where you can still see remnants of the infrastructure.

water of Leith

Picturesque locations

One of the prettiest parts of the Water of Leith to visit is around the Dean Village . This quiet, residential area was originally a medieval village, whose inhabitants worked on the watermills, and is one of the most photogenic areas of Edinburgh.

You can also explore the neighbourhood of Leith , if you follow the river to its mouth , where you will find many high quality restaurants to choose from on The Shore.

Leith is also home to the Royal Yacht Britannia , and Ocean Terminal, a large shopping and leisure centre, allowing you to really maximise your day’s outing!

St Bernard’s Well

Attractions along the way

As well as those neighbourhoods, you can stop off at various other locations along the Water of Leith . Some of the city’s art galleries can be found nearby, including the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art , and the Dean Gallery.

You can also continue to surround yourself with natural beauty with a visit to the Royal Botanic Garden , where you can see thousands of plant species from around the world, at any time of year.

Water of Leith

If you want to take a break and get away from the most touristic places, exploring some interesting parts of the city, following the Water of Leith will be the perfect way to escape.

The Water of Leith crosses the north of Edinburgh, with the walkway running from Balerno to Leith. You can enter and exit the walkway at numerous locations, the closest to the city centre being near Stockbridge , which can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes, or via bus.

Get directions to the Water of Leith.

Although the walkway is a pleasant area to visit by day, it is not recommended to walk along it at night.

Water of Leith

The Water of Leith is Edinburgh’s main river . It runs for 22 miles (35 km) where it flows past Port Leith, into the Firth of Forth.

When we refer to Water of Leith we don’t refer to the river , but to the footpath that is located beside the watercourse and runs 12.25 miles (19.6 km).

The walkway

The Water of Leith walkway is ideal for families, couples and groups of friends that want to get away from the city and go for a walk surrounded by a lush vegetation. On the walk, you’ll come across numerous places of interest , some highlights including  Dean Village , the Royal Botanic Garden , the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and other top attractions .

During the scenic walk on the river bank you can see swans, ducks and herons and up to 80 other varieties of birds. You’ll also see fish jump in the flowing water and swim to the surface; as well as locals walking, jogging past, riding their bicycles or horse riding.

Lovely river walk

If you have enough time and want to discover a different part of Edinburgh , we recommend this peaceful river walk.

If you don’t have enough time, you can go for a short walk when you visit Dean Village .

Boat Tours – Edinburgh

Loch Ness Explorer with Boat Cruise

Experience Boat Tours in Edinburgh

Summer fun : Edinburgh is alive at all times of the year, but especially so during the summer months. The weather is warmer during this time and it's festival season. A time when the city takes on a whole different feel. Vibrant and full of energy. Catch a show, take some tours and you’ll really capture the best of this city.

Best things to do : Edinburgh is your gateway to the Highlands, so make sure you head out to explore the extraordinary countryside. The Loch Ness tour is perfect for that. Inside the city, well it offers plenty. You have Edinburgh castle to explore, the Royal Mile and its shops and entertainment to take in, There’s the old town and the vaults are well worth your time. Try some whisky and indulge in Scottish hospitality too.

Try something different : If a boat tour of Loch Ness isn’t different enough you could always try one of the following. Each will give you a historical perspective of this amazing city. There are ghost tours and walks around the underground vaults. Maybe a little wee drab of whisky? Well, you’ve got to try it out, haven’t you? There are even film location tours. See, plenty of fun to be had.

• Visit the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and you have a lot of choices! The Fringe features a whopping 55,000 performances across 300 venues! From comedy to cabaret, you’ll be catered for.

• Walk up the Royal Mile and you’ll discover that it’s not actually a mile long! It stretches from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace and is 1.13 miles! Oh, and it’s not its real name either.

• Arthur’s Seat dominates the background and is a great place to view the city below. It’s one of two extinct volcanoes in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Castle sits atop the other. Don’t worry both have been extinct for millions of years.

Edinburgh: Silent Disco Adventure Tour

Rating: 5⭐ | Price: $ | Duration: 1 hour

If you want to experience Edinburgh in a truly unique way, then surely this Silent Disco tour is unbeatable! It’s not for shy and retiring types, though, as you’ll need to sing and dance your way through the city streets.

Moving through the historic Scottish capital to hits from several decades, you’ll pass lots of famous landmarks en route. It’s a different way to see the city, that’s for certain.

Edinburgh: Chocolatarium Tour, Tasting & Chocolate Making

Rating: 5⭐ | Price: $ | Duration: 1.5 hours

A tour of Edinburgh’s Chocolatarium also provides visitors with something different to do while visiting the city. During the 90 minute experience you’ll discover how chocolate is produced, from South American cacao plantations to the finished bars available from Scottish chocolate makers.

You can even make your own chocolates, including the flavours of your choice, as part of the tour. Sampling Scottish and global chocolates is also included, with options ranging from chilli to whisky. I took my daughter here for something a little quirky to do together and we had such a fantastic time!

Whether you prefer the idea of dancing and singing your way through the streets, laughing until your sides split or visiting a Chocolatarium, we hope you’ve enjoyed discovering 15 of the finest Edinburgh city tours!
