'Go with the flow': Ruby Princess passengers anxious to leave as ship repairs continue

KGO logo

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The waiting game continues this weekend for passengers on board the Ruby Princess cruise ship, which remains docked in San Francisco.

The ship was supposed to be in Alaska by now but a crash damaged the hull of the vessel while it was docking on Thursday.

SUNDAY UPDATE: Ruby Princess cleared to depart San Francisco for Alaska after damage repaired, coast guard says

A new departure date has been announced for 4 p.m. Sunday if repairs can be done and approved the U.S. Coast Guard by then. In the meantime, those on board are trying to make the best of it.

"It's Hello Kitty day. We stepped off the cruise ship for some Giants game fun," said Anita Lawhon.

Lawhon took in a Giants game Saturday with her husband and friends, but it's not what they had planned. The group was supposed to be sailing to Alaska on the Ruby Princess. The ship was scheduled to depart three days ago.

"Now we have decided to make lemonade out of lemons. We're going to the Giants game and playing it by ear," said Lawhon.

"We thought maybe it was cursed. We were a little worried. It's working out well now," said passenger Debbie Lombardi.

Lombardi and Lawhon have chosen to stay on board the ship, which could set sail on Sunday. That's when Coast Guard and Princess officials say repairs should be complete on the vessel. Those repairs are progressing.

On Friday, our cameras captured a large hole in the ship's hull near the stern.

On Saturday, the hole appeared to be sealed.

"Yes we're going to miss a couple of ports, but we're going to be compensated in a certain way, a good deal. You can't control it. You just have to go with the flow," said passenger Jennifer Ma.

Princess Cruises is offering passengers two options:

Stay on board for a shortened 7-day cruise and get a 75% refund and 75% discount toward a future voyage or leave the ship and get a full refund and 50% off a future cruise.

"So they're not making all the stops. It's not what I signed up to do," said passenger Dan Faltings.

Dan and Debbie Faltings from Livermore say they've had enough stress and disappointment for one trip -- they're going home.

"I feel disappointed. At this point, our mood has changed. I'd rather do it at a different time when we can just get on the boat and have our cruise," said Debbie Faltings.

MORE: Record-setting year for cruising out of San Francisco predicted

"It's all good. Safety is what matters," Lawhon said.

Others on board say they're here for the duration.

"We're all from different areas. We've already planned this. Why not stay?" said Shirley Bartel.

Princess says passengers have until 11 a.m. Sunday to decide if they stay on board or get off the ship. An investigation into Thursday's docking accident is being led by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Update: Ruby Princess departure now Sunday after crashing into SF Pier 27

Updated on: July 7, 2023 / 5:19 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO -- A Princess Cruises ship that was damaged after crashing into the pier while docking in San Francisco Thursday is not expected to leave until Sunday, passengers said.

The Ruby Princess remained docked Friday, more than 24 hours after  the collision Thursday at Pier 27 , delaying an Alaskan vacation for hundreds of passengers. The ship was originally scheduled to depart Thursday afternoon before the crash left a gash in its hull and prompted the lengthy delay.

UPDATE:  Passengers aboard the Ruby Princess remain upbeat as they await departure

Princess Cruises issued an updated statement at 10:45 a.m. Friday, saying the U.S. Coast Guard was performing an inspection and reviewing the repair work that had been completed.

"We expect to receive an estimated departure time from San Francisco for today (July 7) once the inspection is complete," the statement said.

Shortly after 3 p.m., passengers told KPIX that they received word from the cruise line that the ship won't depart until 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 9.

The cruise line later tweeted confirmation of the new departure time.

2/5 Repairs are underway and our technical experts estimate that repairs are likely to take upwards of 24 hours, and the new estimated departure time from San Francisco is 1600 local time on Sunday, July 9. — Princess Cruises (@PrincessCruises) July 7, 2023

Princess Cruises also noted that the itinerary has also been revised to a 7-day Pacific Northwest / Alaska voyage, with stops in Ketchikan, Alaska and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada, before returning to San Francisco on July 16.

The ship crashed into the dock at about 6 a.m. Thursday morning, leaving the ship visibly damaged and as well as damaging the pier. No one was injured in the incident and the cause of the collision was not determined as of Friday morning.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco Bar Pilots spokesperson said in a statement to KPIX 5: "We can confirm a pilot was involved in an incident at Pier 27 this morning. We are cooperating with all necessary agencies in looking into this matter and cannot comment further."

Passengers disembarked after the collision, and the new group of passengers was allowed to get on the ship for the Alaska cruise beginning at 11:30 a.m. The ship was originally scheduled to set sail at 4 p.m. Thursday. Princess Cruises said embarkation for the current roundtrip to Alaska voyage was completed Thursday with 3,256 guests and 1,161 crew onboard as the ship stayed docked overnight in San Francisco.

Princess said it was working to maintain as much of the planned itinerary as possible, and would be providing passengers "a goodwill gesture of compensation once the full effect of the necessary changes is known."

ruby-princess.jpg

Passengers who were embarking on the Ruby Princess' next 10-day trip to Alaska got an up-close look at the damaged ship.

"I was certainly thinking about how the Titanic's been in the news lately and so all of a sudden, I didn't know anything about this until she told me, the next person in line, and I'm thinking there's a hole in the boat? it feels a little iffy," said Maryann Will. "I've come all this way and was planning for three years so here we are."

"I guess I'm willing to accept that they wouldn't be getting all these people on a boat if they had concerns is my hope," added Will.

"I just happened to see it on the news from my hotel room, I was waiting to check out," said Ann Portillo from Scottsdale, Arizona. "I'm sure they know what's best, I have been on many cruises and I don't see this as being a huge issue, it didn't look that bad."

"I just hope it's safe because of what happened this morning, I'm sure they wouldn't let everybody get on the boat unless it was safe," said Debbie McIntosh.

"As long as the lifeboats work," Mike McIntosh said as he laughed.

Boarded Ruby yesterday 🛳️

On board at 10:40am! Went directly to the Sanctuary & secured front row lounges for all the times we wanted to- INCLUDING the canal! Secured a spot for the Caymus Wine Pairing Dinner, all by 11:30am. Lunch in Reserve Dining in MDR was delicious & love our servers David & Kevin. Rooms ready at 12:30.  1st dinner excellent & always recommend the Pot Roast (never disappoints) & of course soufflé & crème brûlée! Fun games in Explorers Lounge, especially loved Musical Bingo! Off to an outstanding start!

Thanks for sharing.  For our upcoming Ruby trip (the end of Feb) - how is the "casual dining meals" working out?  Gastro Pub, Vines, any other venues on the Ruby?  What are the hours that these meals are available, and how crowded do they get?

If you get a chance, please post a picture of the officers of the Ruby Princess. I know they have a photo frame hanging somewhere near the piazza of them. I assume Natalie is the "Cruise Director". I'm not familiar with her, glad to hear you like her.

Thanks Susan & Paul for posting the pictures of the officers on the Ruby Princess. I will post this picture on our roll call of March 9th on the Ruby. It's nice to know who the captain and cruise director might be when we board. Have a wonderful cruise and we will be following along.

Natalie is acting as the cruise director while the new one gets over an illness. Natalie was actually promoted to Entertainment Director and will be moving to another ship. Ruby had just come from 13th in the fleet to 2nd! Outstanding new crew ❤️

How does one learn of the placements in the fleet? I had an interesting conversation with a bartender when on the Grand in September 2022. He was thrilled to be on the Grand and had just transferred from the Emerald.

Ruby Day 3 Falmouth Jamaica MDR breakfast, delicious (eggs Benedict for me & yogurt & fruit for my husband). Beautiful weather, lovely clean and friendly port - ventured outside the company and found the towns people to be very welcoming & not pushy. Back on board ship was pretty empty ❤️ . Dinner Crown Grill totally the best we’ve had in any Crown Grill. We had the Porterhouse & Rib Eye plus sides & indulgent dessert! Good entertainment throughout the ship. PS - if you can secure the Sanctuary, it’s fabulous!!

IMG_1927.jpeg

Nice to follow along will be boarding on March 9th could tell me if there is any Canadian Whiskey Crown royal or Canadian Club. Thank you

Ruby Day 4 at sea Rock & Roll! Well, “we” had a fabulous day, but for some it was a tad rough. Beautiful weather but with 20ft rolling seas. Lots of on board activities and outstanding food & service as usual. Spent nice time speaking with the new Hotel General Manager, Shane. Super nice guy & very knowledgeable- a good addition to Ruby.

Ruby Day 5 Cartegena, CO Beautiful morning & arrival - We took the Princess excursion “Best of  Cartegena” a busy half day hitting all the Cartegena sights. Surprised that the locals were really not as pushy as we expected- they approach you, you say, no thank you & they go away! Don’t miss the beautiful green space at the port entrance/exit - local flora, fauna and wild animals in an open setting. Also a large, very nice (but more $ than in town) gift shop. PS dinner on board, delicious (albeit different) beef stroganoff 👍🏻

Day 6 Panama Canal

The Cruise Gods were good to us with an extra hour sleep before entering the canal! All proceeded smoothly with perfect (albeit HOT) weather. We chose to be in The Sanctuary, where they provided a continental breakfast & mimosas! Great panoramic views! That said there is abundant good viewing around the ship. For those on the “secret platform” there  was a good amount of room and the afternoon return through the locks was pretty spacious. Sorry I forgot to take a pic of the menus! I had fajitas & Paul had Kingklip fish, unfamiliar but good.

Awesome.  Thanks so much.

Day 7, 8, 9 Ruby

oh gosh, I could never be a vlogger or blogger! We’ve had a terrific time & too busy to post! Here’s a quick recap! We’ve had some rough seas for the Caribbean! But all calm now - that said, it didn’t impede any of our enjoyment! Ruby looks great, and the crew is outstanding. Food has all been top notch! Posting the remaining menus I have. Pics from the Caymus Wine dinner & menu as well. Happy to answer anything I’m able beyond that. 😉 Cheers!

Princess Cruises Rolls Out Fleetwide Dining Revolution: Traditional, Reservable, Open Seating, and Anywhere Service Now Available for Every Guest Preference

New options follow successful debut aboard new sun princess.

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., (April 13, 2024) – Princess Cruises today announced it is making a significant enhancement to the main dining options found across its fleet, designed to give guests the ultimate in flexibility and choice when it comes to their dining experience by offering three table service options – Traditional, Reservable, or Walk-in Anytime - coupled with the brand’s industry exclusive OceanNow location-based “anywhere” service.

With a dedication to personal preference and individualized service, Princess will designate separate dining rooms aboard every ship in the fleet* to the three table service options – one dedicated to traditional dining offering an early and a late seating every evening; one offering reservable dining times; and a third with open seating to support walk-ins anytime.  The three table service options integrate with the line’s unparalleled OceanNow, which provides guests the convenience of ordering anything, anytime, and receiving it anywhere onboard, making Princess uniquely positioned to accommodate all guest dining preferences.

Making all dining formats available fleetwide follows the resounding success of this new approach already implemented aboard the new Sun Princess.  With the stunning introduction of the new next level Love Boat came the debut of three-story dining room with one floor dedicated to traditional dining, another serving guests with a flexible reservation and a third for anytime walk-ins.

“Our guests have been delighted with the dining flexibility aboard Sun Princess and we’re pleased to extend the concept to all the other ships in our fleet,” said Sami Kohen, Princess Cruises vice president of food and beverage.  “Now whether guests prefer an early seating every evening, or change things up every night, or even change their mind, these flexible dining options ensure that their dining preference is effortlessly accommodated.”

Starting on April 15, 2024, the new approach will launch on Princess voyages departing September 14, 2024 and beyond. To support these changes and the transition to the new system, main dining reservations that already have been made for voyages sailing September 14 and beyond for any ship except Sun Princess will be cancelled. Main dining reservations for guests sailing through September 13 will not be affected.

Starting June 17, booked guests will be able to use the app ahead of their voyage to opt for traditional seating in a dedicated dining room with the same waiter, same table and same time each night, or flexible dining, allowing them to enjoy dinner at any available time and table size of their choosing in either the Reservable or Open Seating dining rooms.

This change does not affect guests booked in specialty dining restaurants or suite or reserve collection accommodations, who enjoy a dedicated dining room on Princess ships, where no reservations are required.

Fossils found in Somerset by 11-year-old girl are from largest-ever marine reptile

Ruby Reynolds and her father uncover jawbone of gigantic prehistoric sea creature that measured 25-metres long

Paleontologists Dr Dean Lomax, Ruby Reynolds, Justin Reynolds and Paul de la Salle - Fossils found in Somerset by 11-year-old girl may be largest-ever marine reptile

The bones of what is believed to be the largest marine reptile ever discovered were found on a beach by an amateur fossil-hunting father and daughter duo.

Palaeontologists think the remains are thought to be from a type of ichthyosaur, a prehistoric marine reptile that lived during the time of the dinosaurs .

Fossilised pieces of jawbone, some measuring more than two metres long, were uncovered on the Somerset coast in May 2020, and are thought to be part of the large sea creature that measured 25 metres long.

Justin Reynolds and his daughter Ruby from Braunton, Devon, made the discovery while hunting for fossils on the beach at Blue Anchor.

The bones are about 202 million years old and date back to the end of the Triassic Period in a time known as the Rhaetian. Gigantic ichthyosaurs, thought to be the size of a blue whale , swam the seas during this period, while dinosaurs roamed the land.

Ruby, then aged 11, found the first chunk of giant bone before the pair searched for more pieces together. After realising the significance of the fossils, they approached Dr Dean Lomax, a palaeontologist at The University of Manchester.

Dr Lomax contacted Paul de la Salle, a seasoned fossil collector who had found a similar giant jawbone in May 2016, further along the coast at Lilstock.

Mr Reynolds said: “When Ruby and I found the first two pieces we were very excited as we realised that this was something important and unusual.

“When I found the back part of the jaw, I was thrilled because that is one of the defining parts of Paul’s earlier discovery.”

Ruby added: “It was so cool to discover part of this gigantic ichthyosaur. I am very proud to have played a part in a scientific discovery like this.”

Ichthyotitan severnensis

Dr Lomax, said: “I was amazed by the find. In 2018, my team [including Paul de la Salle] studied and described Paul’s giant jawbone and we had hoped that one day another would come to light.

“This new specimen is more complete, better preserved, and shows that we now have two of these giant bones – called a surangular – that have a unique shape and structure. I became very excited, to say the least.”

A team of researchers, led by Dr Lomax, found that the jawbones belong to a new species of giant ichthyosaur. The team, including the Reynolds duo, unearthed more parts of the same jaw, with the last piece discovered in October 2022.

They named the creature Ichthyotitan severnensis, which means giant fish lizard of the Severn.

Rock and fossil records suggest the giant ichthyosaurs became extinct after the Late Triassic global mass extinction event, meaning the bones discovered in the study represent the last of their kind.

Handout issued by Manchester University showing the nearly complete jawbone compared with the 2018 bone

Dr Lomax added: “I was highly impressed that Ruby and Justin correctly identified the discovery as another enormous jawbone from an ichthyosaur.

“They recognised that it matched the one we described in 2018. I asked them whether they would like to join my team to study and describe this fossil, including naming it.

“They jumped at the chance. For Ruby, especially, she is now a published scientist who not only found but also helped to name a type of gigantic prehistoric reptile.

“There are probably not many 15-year-olds who can say that. A Mary Anning in the making, perhaps.”

Master’s student, Marcello Perillo, from the University of Bonn, Germany, carried out further investigations and found that the animal was still growing at the time of death.

He said: “So much about these giants is still shrouded by mystery, but one fossil at a time we will be able to unravel their secret.”

Judge keeps bond at $25K for mother accused of leaving her children alone for days to go on cruise

KTRK logo

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A mother accused of leaving her children home alone for days while she went on a vacation appeared before a judge on Monday.

While 29-year-old Lakesha Woods Williams was on a cruise to Puerto Rico, authorities say her kids - just 8 and 6 years old - were left to fend for themselves.

She was arrested last Thursday and has been in jail since then.

The video above is from the previous story: 29-year-old mother who left children alone while on a cruise has done it before, court records show

Williams is charged with abandoning a child with intent to return, and according to court records, neighbors say this isn't the first time something like this has happened.

Residents at Williams' luxury high-rise apartment building in the Memorial area reportedly called authorities worried about the kids. They said they saw the mother of two leave with luggage and bags on April 4, and she never returned.

The children were said to be left alone for at least five days and told deputies they didn't know when their mom was coming home.

Deputies with the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office went to Williams' apartment for a welfare check last Tuesday and said that the apartment was in disarray, it smelled like urine, and there was leftover food all over the place.

Authorities reported finding a web camera and cell phone that the children said their mother used to check in on them. When deputies contacted Williams, they said she was uncooperative and changed her story about where she was.

On Monday, a magistrate judge reviewed Williams' bond and kept it at $25,000, calling the circumstances "egregious."

Her children are now in the custody of her sister, and the magistrate issued a protective order that prevents her from communicating with or being near her daughter and son.

"We take these child abuse cases very seriously. Even if you're acting negligently, it's not an excuse," Asst. District Attorney Keegan Childers said on Monday.

A ghost pianist and color-changing cocktails: Inside Princess Cruises' hidden magic club

The pianist at a lounge on Princess Cruises’ new ship played the theme song from “Titanic” while guests sipped their cocktails.

It may seem like dark humor, but the musician is a ghost, after all. As the story goes, Isabella lives inside the space entertaining guests (she even takes requests).

In actuality, the instrument – which appeared to play itself – is part of Spellbound by Magic Castle, a new venue on the Sun Princess that combines dinner, drinks and magic. The speakeasy-like space was created in partnership with the Magic Castle , a legendary private club in Los Angeles.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Denise Saviss, the cruise line’s vice president for entertainment experience, said during a recent sailing that the Magic Castle has been a “well-protected secret.”

“As a members-only club, you can only attend by invitation, but they are keen to expand, and a partnership with us was a really great way to do that where we have a ton of international guests who may not ever get over to Hollywood and therefore it's not in reach,” Saviss said.

USA TODAY got a preview of Spellbound during a cruise ahead of its opening next month. Here’s what guests can expect.

What is Spellbound like?

Guests will start the evening with dinner in the Horizons Dining Room, choosing from a menu not found elsewhere on board (our preview did not include the dinner portion). They will then be escorted through an inconspicuous black door off the ship’s Piazza into Spellbound’s small foyer. There, a voice on a speaker tells the story of the Larsen family, who opened the Magic Castle in 1963, for a few minutes.

We were prompted to say the magic words (“Open sesame”), and the fireplace in front of us moved aside to reveal a music room and the Parlor Bar, lined with art and artifacts curated with help from the Magic Castle. A pair of handcuffs used by famed escape artist Harry Houdini even hung on one wall.

Isabella and her companion, a white bird named The Professor, can be seen in a portrait in the music room. She is the cousin of another ghost, Irma, who lives at the Magic Castle in California.

“Irma never loved to travel, but Isabella did,” said Kerry Lovegrove, Princess’ director of entertainment experience. “She traveled probably one too many times across the Atlantic, and then all of a sudden she was lost at sea. So she suddenly found the Sun Princess being built in Monfalcone and thought she’d attach herself onto that ship.”

Isabella disappears from view when she’s ready to play. The Professor, meanwhile, moves over to a nearby birdcage to enjoy the music (I saw him swaying to “My Heart Will Go On” at one point).

Behind the bar, a library holds its own not-so-hidden treasures. I picked up a gold rotary phone and heard someone ask “How can I help?” before changing their mind and hanging up. Guests might also see books float and fall, according to Lovegrove.

Even the drinks appear enchanted. One cocktail I ordered, The Magician, featured butterfly pea tequila that turned from blue to purple as the server poured it into the glass (also containing mezcal, lime, grapefruit, serrano peppers and agave).

Spellbound hosts magic in the bar as well as its 30-seat theater. Before theater seating opened, Mark Gibson kept us glued to his card deck, at one point finding the card a fellow guest chose by cutting the deck with the assistance of a tiny plunger. Woody Aragon also used cards in the theater, including asking an audience member to call someone who wasn’t in the room to pick one. (Spoiler: he named their chosen card correctly.)

The Parlor Bar magician will stay on the ship for a couple of months at a time, and the magician performing in the theater will change every cruise or two, but all are vetted by the Magic Castle team.

When will Spellbound by Magic Castle open?

Spellbound will open April 8 and is now available to book. Guests must be at least 13 to enter and just like at the venue’s Hollywood namesake, there is a mandatory dress code (my invitation called for cocktail attire).

The cruise line also will host its second Magic Castle Conjurer’s Cruise themed sailing on Sun Princess in November.

How much does Spellbound cost?

The experience costs $149 per person, including dinner, entertainment and unlimited drinks.

Spellbound will offer three theater shows a night and can accommodate a total of 90 guests (30 each night). Once they’re in the space, they can stay as long as they like (until it closes for the night). There are dinner seatings at 5, 7 and 9 p.m., and Spellbound is expected to close around midnight, though there is no hard closing time.

Best times to go on a cruise: We broke it down by region

Lovegrove said the venue serves as a new home base for magic, which already proved popular with Princess guests in other spaces on its ships. “If you love magicians, this is the spot for you.”
