Can’t upload files in Safari? Update to Safari 14.0.3 (or drag and drop)

safari 14 mac icon big sur

Wth the release of Safari 14.0.1 for macOS last November, Apple introduced a bug that prevented the use of the “upload files” option on web pages. The problem persisted until February 1, 2021, when the company released the 14.0.3 update for all supported macOS releases. If you’ve had this problem, simply update Safari to make it go away.

mac911 drag file onto button

Drag a file onto an upload button, and it inverts; release, and the file name or list should be shown.

If for some reason, you can’t shift to Safari 14.0.3 from 14.0.1 or 14.0.2, there’s a workaround: simply drag a file or files onto the upload button. The upload buttons lights up when the cursor lands on top of them. Some sites are designed to allow drag-and-drop, and may show other animation or a confirmation as to the target. But even sites that use a simple HTML button with no special JavaScript coding can still accept files through this drag-and-drop method.

This can also be useful even with the latest Safari if you’d prefer to drag and drop items instead of using the Open dialog navigation method.

Security Update 2020-001 for Catalina & 2020-007 Mojave + Safari 14.0.2

MrMacintosh.com - Security Updates 2020-001 for Catalina & 2020-007 Mojave

Security Updates 2020-001 for macOS Catalina (19H114) & 2020-007 Mojave (18G7016) & Safari 14.0.2 are now Available.

Apple has released Security Updates 2020-001 (Catalina) and 2020-007 (Mojave). MacOS High Sierra is now officially unsupported by Apple. The 2020-006 Security Update was High Sierra’s final update. Mojave has taken its place as the 3rd supported version of macOS behind Catalina.

Since this security update is Catalina’s first it was named 2020-001. Mojave has had 7 Security Updates so the version is 2020-007. Next year they will both be named 2021-001.

Automatic Update Snapshots

With the move to Security Updates, Catalina does not support Automatic Update Snapshots. You can read more about this here > https://mrmacintosh.com/10-15-3-combo-security-updates-are-not-creating-backup-snapshots/

Mojave however still does! The 2020-007 security update creates a snapshot and does NOT purge previous snapshots.

I really wish Apple could get this feature working again.

The Safari 14.0.1 upload issue is not fixed in 14.0.2.

A simple example of this is using Gmail in Safari. If you update to Safari 14.0.1 or 14.0.2 you will be unable to attach anything to an email The only work around right now is to use Chrome or Firefox.

New workaround = drag and drop the file into the window.

Install Process Fixed!

With the release of 2020-006, Apple has changed things up. In the past you could have the base version of Mojave, 18G103 for example and the latest security update would show as available and you could update right to it. With 2020-006 you will need to be on 2020-005 first before you can update to 2020-006! This is a huge pain if you have systems that are behind in build versions.

If you have a fresh build of macOS Mojave 10.14.6 (18G103) and you want to get to 2020-006.

  • 1. Install Security Update 2020-005 first.
  • 2. After installing 2020-005, you will now see 2020-006 available for instal in software update.

With the release of the new 2020-001 and 2020-007 Security Updates, Apple now lets you jump straight to the latest update.

Updated Fixed Example

If you have a fresh build of macOS Mojave 10.14.6 (18G103) and you want to get to 2020-007.

Testing the Security Update Install Process

After all the problems of the 2020-005 Security Update for Mojave caused, I wanted to again make sure everything was ok with 2020-001 & 2020-007. I’ve installed both the 2020-007 and Safari 14.0.2 updates and have not found any issues. You can safely install both of them together.

In review, I have tested the following.

  • From a Base macOS Catalina 10.15.7 (19H2) Install
  • 1. Install only Safari 14.0.1 (14.0.2 available after)
  • 2. Install only 2020-001 (both Safari updates available after)
  • 3. Install 2020-001 & Safari 14.0.1 (Safari 14.0.2 available after)
  • 4. Install 2020-001, Safari 14.0.1 & Safari 14.0.2
  • The order of install = #1 Safari 14.0.1 #2 Safari 14.0.2 #3 Security Update 2020-007

So, I if I did not update with the security update 2021-001, but now there is a 2021-002 out for Mojave…am I safe to just download the installer from Apple downloads and run? No need to run 2021-001 first?

I have installed Safari update 14.0.3 and it corrected the bug that prevented using the website attach button from working. Any update on Security Update 2021-001 for Mojave? I do not see a direct download link yet on Apple Downloads and only appears in Software Update.

Yes, I’ve just installed that too, a bit nervous at first but hurray, fixed the attachment problem with Yahoo and Gmail…

So a bunch of our users (including myself) issues with TimeZones completely being removed from our computers. Anyone else experiencing this? Only solution we’ve found is reload the computers to fix this issue. Tried every command or removal of symbolic links to fix this but nothing seems to recover this.

Yes Alan, was a bit of a shock to lose my attachment ability with Yahoo and Gmail unless I use Chrome..the other clumsy way is to open Finder and drag and drop to the email..that works..but staggered that Apple still haven’t provided an update for Safari 14.0.2, it’s been months now! Really slack Apple!

I’ve read on the Apple Forums that those on the beta program say Safari 14.0.3b fixes. I waited and stayed at 14.0 for along time (which works fine), but eventually updated to 14.0.2 just to catch up on the security fixes of 14.0.1 and 14.0.2. I didn’t take the option to reinstall 10.14.6 and update all the way just before Safari 14.X just because it seemed silly to do all that work. I’ve used another browser in the short term when I need to attach (but drag and drop still works in the broken Safari).

So, first it was the inability to do attachments to e-mail messages (now, thankfully, fixed), but now I find that the latest Safari update (14.0.3) apparently won’t implement changes I make to unblock popups from certain preferred websites.

I click a link on the main page of a site, get the message “Your browser is currently blocking third party cookies” (not surprising as I’ve blocked most popups by default). However, when I go to Safari > Preferences > Websites > Current Blockers and turn blocking to OFF for the selected site, its popups still don’t work. Same thing if I select “Settings for This Website…” from the Safari dropdown menu and clear the “Enable content blockers” checkbox. Is anyone else experiencing this Firefox-boosting problem?

I use Firefox 84, still have daily T2/BridgeOS crashes.

I am photosensitive and need to block a lot of web animation and other standard web design, to avoid injury. So I don’t think I can use Safari.

Also using MacOS 10.14.6 on a 2018 Mac Mini.

Because Migration Assistant wouldn’t work with the smaller internal drive, and wouldn’t let me the system on the internal drive and everything else on the external, I run from an external USB-C drive.

Because of software compatibility issues, have to keep using Mojave.

On my Mac Mini 2018, with Mojave 10.14.6 that I own since March 2020, I have updated the Security Update 2020-007 and Safari 14.0.2. All seems to work fin. Finally the Kernel Crash Report that appeared only after using Safari and doing a shutdown and a cold-boot does not appear anymore. Since I stopped using Safari as my regular browser I can not confirm the issue with G-Mail upload. It is incredible how long it took to solve this problem, that I had since April 2020. The result is, that I now mainly use Firefox or Chrome in stead of Safari.

Thank you for all the reports on your site.

Another issue with 2020-006 was that on Mojave, VMWare Fusion 11.5.7 did not work anymore (trying to open a birtual machine only displayed error messages) – and VMWare 12 only works on Catalina or Big Sur. Has this problem be fixed by 2020-007?

I haven’t experienced any issues with VMWare Fusion 11.5.7 and Mojave 2020-007 Security Update. I am able to start, shutdown and run multiple macOS VMs e.g. 10.13, 10.14, 10.15, CentOS and Windows just fine. I hope this helps.

Thanks Tom! But did you experience problems with VMWare and Mojave 2020-005 or 006 Security Update?

Bernard, I don’t have information about 2020-005 and 006 Security Update. I have upgraded from Mojave 2020-004 Security Update to Mojave 2020-007 Security Update, thanks to Mr. Macintosh’s wonderful blog!

Thanks again.

I am currently running Mojave 10.14.6 and Safari 12.1.2 on my 2013 Mac Computer….

Was advised to update to 2020-007 and Mac Supplemental update 10.14.6 and Safari 14.01 and 14.02

After downloading these updates, I was unable to attach files to my Yahoo/Gmail emails..Apple told me to re install Mojave, which I did and subsequently was able to attach files to my emails…But as soon as I was flagged with another Mojave security update 2020-007 10.14.6 etc I once again unable to attach emails…After re installing Mojave once again, everything works, but I won’t be installing the same update again…Is there a problem with these updates as Apple won’t give me an answer…

Hi , Is there a way to check what the last Security update was that I installed ? Running Mojave 10.14.6 (18G7016)

Yes! Click the apple > about this mac > system report > Installations will show you all the previous updates. (you are currently up to date with 18G6016)

OK ! Thanks vm !

Thanks for sharing. I have upgraded from Mojave 2020-004 Security Update to Mojave 2020-007 Security Update on a MacPro5,1. It’s been running fine for 11 days without any issues. Thanks to this article I have saved a lot of time and hassle. For now I keep ignoring Safari 14.0.1, Safari 14.0.2 and two macOS Supplemental Updates 10.14.6 which includes Safari 14. Attaching files is essential to me. So, hopefully Apple will release a Safari 14.0.3 fix soon.

As an FYI, Safari 14.0 is fine and didn’t have the issue. I believe one of those supplemental updates was in reality just Safari v14.0 with a fix for the original release of Safari 14 (MacOS Supplemental Update?)

Correct, the (MacOS Supplemental Update) was just the fixed version of safari 14.0

So, I installed security update 2020-007 but never installed Safari 14.0.1 and Safari 14.0.2 and have been holding at Safari 14.0 (which still works). I’ve never seen once version of Safari required to install a later version, but in 3 different MBA’s running 10.14.6 BOTH Safari versions are listed as needing installed. 1.) Am I missing any crucial security updates to Safari by holding off and staying at 14.0? 2.) If I decide to install, is it best to do both at the same time or install one and reboot and install the other. 3.) Is it likely we will see a v 14.0.3 that replaces both and only requires one install? Thank you again for all your words of wisdom and advice

You bet Darren.

The short answer is yes, you are missing out on security fixes by staying on 14.0. I tested making the jump straight to 14.0.2 from 14.0 and it works. After the update is complete the 14.0.1 update will disappear. It’s possible that 14.0.3 will fix the issue but we will have to wait to find out.

Thank you for that advice. So even with the introduced uploading but, to ensure security is at it’s best, I should go ahead and update Safari. If I need that upload feature, I always have a secondary browser to fall back on. Is this the way to go?

The other workaround is to drag the file over to the window where you need to upload the file, let me know if this works!

Ok. Will do the updates shortly. It sounds like the patches in Safari 14.0.1 and 14.0.2 are important enough to offset the introduced bug? Would that be your thoughts as well?

In addition, I see that for those of us who did not install either 14.0.1 or 14.0.2 and had BOTH showing as needed, only 14.0.2 now shows.

RE: the inability to upload mail attachments etc: Whether the drag-and-drop workaround works will depend on how the receiving site is designed: Works in Yahoo mail, but not Hotmail, for example. I had the same system setup as Jeremy Rose (12/31 post), and the inability to upload attachments began right after I installed Security Update 2020-007. I just now updated Safari to 14.0.2 (on Mojave 10.14.6) in the hopes of fixing this, but no luck.

Does installing Catalina or Big Sur bypass this upload issue with Safari? Otherwise, I feel like reverting to Safari 14.0.0, or 13.x even!

Safari 14.0.3

Originally published at: Safari 14.0.3 - TidBITS Updates Apple’s Web browser to patch a single security vulnerability. (Free, various sizes, macOS 10.15+ and 10.14+)

There’s a comment on Mr. Macintosh’s post about the associated OS updates that suggests that this update to Safari addressed the problem with not being able to click Upload buttons. Can anyone who was having this problem confirm?

Does this mean there are basically 2 versions of Safari 14.0.3???

If so, this situation is very annoying, and ridiculous (on the part of Apple).

Sorry, I misunderstood the question.

My understanding is that one of the bits of the macOS used by Safari has been revised so that this is a new build of the app adjusted to use that revised bit of the OS. Presumably a small change that was important enough to be distributed quickly, and one that did not justify several GB of security update.

My version went to v14.0.3 (14610.4.3.1. 7 ) from v14.0.3 (14610.4.3.1. 6 ).

Here is my point: If you have 2 pieces of Safari (or whatever), which behave differently, then you do not assign the same version number to the 2 differently-behaving pieces.

I worked in avionics software for a bazillion years, and the FAA would never stand for assigning the same version number to 2 pieces of software which BEHAVED DIFFERENTLY !!

The FAA is correct in this interpretation of what a software version number means.

You’re telling me Apple could not assign a new version number of 14.0.4 to the updated Safari?? Come on !!

(BTW, I don’t care if the same version of Safari (or whatever) is shared amongst all the macOS versions (with build numbers to differentiate which macOS is used). As long as the behavior of Safari is identical running within any particular macOS.)

Yes, I realized that, apologized for misunderstanding and deleted my post about an hour earlier.

Mainframe background with the occasional bit of assembler — nothing which carried the possibility of immediately life-threatening consequences.

I believe the full descriptor of my updated web browser is “Safari v14.0.3 (14610.4.3.1.7)”. My wife refers to it as “Safari” and would struggle to identify the version number . . . and might respond with scorn if I pressed her to find the build number.

What do you think would be gained by calling it “Safari v14.0.4 (nnnnn.n.n.n.n)” as opposed to Apple’s choice ?

I apologize to Al. I noticed his amended note, after I sent my second note.

To Andrew, I am leaving the conversation. I don’t agree with Apple’s method of assignment of version numbers. I don’t want to address this issue any further.

We published an article explaining all the version numbers a while back.

As to why Apple didn’t bump Safari to 14.0.4, there’s no telling. I suspect it has to do with the fact that the 14.0.3 number is shared among three macOS versions, and 14.0.4 might already be underway for macOS 11.3.

I had this problem once before, but it was with Safari 14.0.1. I just verified on my iMac with Mojave that uploads were working fine on 14.0.3 before I installed this latest update. Anyway, it’s working fine for me after the update as well.

Hi I installed Big Sur 11.2 yesterday but had a huge problem with my screen. Decided to revert back to 11.1. All is fine except Safari which is the version for 11.2 and it will not run on 11.1. Why did it leave an incompatible version?! and there is no way to replace it...suggestions?

How did you revert back? Time Machine? If you use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup before upgrading you can revert back without running into Safari problems or other incompatibilities. Time Machine will restore the system files which is why you got back to 11.1 but it will not overwrite what it "sees" as a later version of Safari. You're not the only one caught up with that. You may have to wipe and do a clean install of 11.1 in order to get straight again. Or use another browser and wait for 11.3 which should be released sometime in the Spring.

I had the same issue during the 11.2beta period. Went back to 11.1 and got stuck with the Safari from 11.2. (I believe that is because the system modification date on Safari on 11.2 and 11.1 are both January 1st, 2010 and the system can't determine which to keep and which to drop.). It's asking for trouble to mix and match system components manually. Not only Safari is mismatched. Safari is just the only application that you happen to notice. If nothing else, you're opening yourself up to potential iCloud corruption issues with mismatched system components in an untested configuration. Muck with system integrity protection and Apple system files at your peril.

Safari 14.0.3 falsely says I don't have enough disk space to download - usually PDFs

For the last few days, whenever I try to download PDFs from PDF links, the download fails with this error:

safari 14.0.3 download

This is demonstrably false, however, I have well over 36gb of space available, and downloading PDFs directly that load in a browser window seems to work.

I am not the only person reporting this - someone else posted an identical issue that was closed so I could not piggyback on it. The "solution" provided in that thread was to look at this following article, which a) does not address the faulty disk space issue, and b) did not solve either mine or the original posters' problem:

https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/if-you-cant-download-an-item-from-the-web-ibrwa006/mac

Also this report of the very same problem - with much more detail - came from a third party:

https://macperformanceguide.com/blog/2020/20200716_1430-macOS-Catalina-update-Safari-cannot-download.html

I am on Mac OS X Catalina 10.5.7, Macbook Pro and running Safari 14.0.3. This issue does not happen with either Chrome or Firefox, nor does it happen with other files in many circumstances.

Please fix this soon, it is a big problem when the PDFs - often important ones - can't be opened in a browser window but are set to download only. It is keeping me from downloading some important bank statements.

Well, you are not addressing Apple here. This is a user-to-user forum and we’re just users like yourself. That means we can’t ‘fix’ anything, let alone ’soon’. And if you are claiming that Safari 14.0.3 does this for everyone you are mistaken. I myself am running Catalina 10.15.7 fully updated and Safari 14.0.3 and am experiencing no such issue. There are also almost no other reports describing this issue. With millions of people running Catalina and Safari I would suspect you (and others) have a local issue on your installation.

I might suggest you boot into ‘Safe Mode’ to see if the issue still persists. Restart your Mac while holding down the Shift Key until the progress bar starts moving. It can take up to ten minutes to startup because numerous maintenance routines are launched to clear caches, reset system, etc. Now check for the issue.

I've had a very similar problem also recently (though with Big Sur 11.3) and have discovered that the amount of space your Apple claims to have may be larger than the amount of space it actually has. Besides checking the free space available in the Finder window check also how much free space the Disk Utility application and similar apps find; they may be enough for the PDF but if they're significantly smaller than what the Finder claims (as is the case on mine- 25-odd GB according to Disk Utility, 90-odd GB-fluctuating-give or take virtual memory according to the Finder) there may be a serious problem, I think...
