Safari not downloading files can waste your productivity hours. While the App Store has capable Safari alternatives, you may want to stick to Apple’s browser for better privacy and security. Let’s fix the issue once and for all.

1. Check Network Connection

Let’s start with the basics. Shall we? Safari won’t download media or other files if the data connection on your iPhone or Mac is spotty. You’ll need to ensure that your device has a working internet connection before starting the download process.

Step 1: Swipe from the top-right corner to access the Control Center on iPhone X or above. On older iPhones with a physical Home button, double-click the Home button to open the Control Center.

Step 2: Enable Cellular/Mobile data or connect to a robust Wi-Fi network.

Run an internet speed test on your iPhone to ensure your connection offers better reliability and consistent speeds. If your Mac has Wi-Fi issues , check our troubleshooting guide to fix the problem.

2. Reload the Web Page and Retry

Web pages may not open on a slow internet connection. After you confirm good internet connectivity (check the trick above), reload the web page in Safari and start downloading files without breaking a sweat.

3. Use a VPN and Try Another Server

Most websites prioritize specific servers around the world. If Safari isn’t downloading files in your region, you can manually change the IP address on your iPhone or Mac and try again. You don’t need to dig through settings to modify the IP address. Using a capable VPN app, you can easily change your IP location and start downloading files.

When we faced Safari not downloading files issue on our iPhone, we used a VPN and connect to one of the US servers. The trick worked like a charm, and Safari completed the download process in no time.

There is no drought of VPN apps on iPhone and Mac. You can download any popular VPN app from the App Store and change your region.

4. Check the Website

Did you follow the tricks above and still encounter Safari not downloading files issue? It’s time to check the website’s current status. Safari can’t download the files if the website faces uptime issues. You can ask your friend to check the downloads or visit downdetector to confirm the problem. You have no option but to wait for the website to fix the server-side issues.

5. Disable iCloud Private Relay

iCloud Private Relay is a part of iCloud+ and Apple One subscriptions on iPhone. The option is enabled by default to deliver a secure browsing experience. It hides your IP address and browsing activity in Safari and protects your unencrypted internet traffic from prying eyes.

Apple relies on a third-party cloud (Cloudflare) to offer a Private Relay function on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. When Cloudflare servers are down, you may notice pop-ups like ‘ iCloud Private Relay Unavailable ’. In such scenarios, Safari may face issues with downloading files on iPhone. You can temporarily disable iCloud Private Relay and try again.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

How to fix Safari not downloading files on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

You may, at times, encounter an issue where Safari refuses to download photos, videos, audio, PDFs, documents, and other files from a website. In this article, we’ll explore common reasons why Safari may not be downloading files on iPhone, iPad, or Mac and provide solutions to help you get back to downloading with ease.

List of Safari downloads on iPhone

The issues you may be facing

  • Clicking the download link opens a new blank tab, and no file download starts.
  • Safari is refusing to begin file downloads from one or all sites.
  • File download starts, but it fails immediately in a second or two.
  • The download happens up to a point and then fails midway or just before completing.
  • Safari downloads a file but opens it and then deletes the original files (this happens with ZIP and other compressed files).

The solutions below should help fix all the above issues and also ones similar to them.

Before you begin

It’s possible that you’re not following the right steps to download the file. On Mac, it’s super easy, but on iPhone and iPad, downloading files may not be as obvious. With that said, even if the file has been downloaded, you may not know where it’s saved and how to find it. So, look at these tutorials, if needed:

  • How to download videos from Safari on iPhone and iPad
  • How to download files and documents to iPhone or iPad
  • How to access downloaded files on iPhone and iPad

Retry the download

In many cases, initiating the download again does the trick. Try hitting the download link again, and it should work. If not, refresh the webpage and click the download button again.

Note: Some websites put downloads behind a login wall. So, make sure to honor that.

Pause and resume the download

The download may look like it has started, but it will pause or fail in a few seconds. If that happens, hit the tiny retry button a few times, and it should start the download. If not, hit the download link again on the website.

Check your internet

Make sure your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is connected to a stable Wi-Fi, Cellular Data, or Ethernet connection and the internet is working properly.

Some useful tips

  • Turn off VPN if you’re using one.
  • Restart your Wi-Fi router.

Allow the website to download files

When you try to download a file from a website for the first time, it doesn’t start immediately. Instead, you will see an alert asking your permission to allow this site to download and save files locally or not. Make sure you allow that. If you choose to block the download, follow these steps to fix it:

On iPhone and iPad: Hit the download link again on the website and tap Allow or Download when asked. If you don’t see the Allow button, clear your browser data.

Allow and Download popup alert in Safari before downloading a file

On Mac: Open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. Now, go to Websites > Downloads > click the drop-down menu next to the website name and choose Allow . While you’re here, also make sure it says ‘ Ask ‘ or ‘ Allow ‘ next to ‘ When visiting other websites .’

Allow websites to download files in Safari on Mac

Force Quit and reopen Safari

On iPhone and iPad: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold or double-press the Home button to enter App Switcher. From here, drag the Safari app card all the way up to close it .

On Mac: Save your work in any other open Safari tabs. Next, click the Apple icon  and choose Force Quit . Here, select Safari and click Force Quit .

Now reopen Safari and try downloading the file again.

Use alternate download links

You may see more than one download link on a website. If one link fails to work, try the other one. Note: Sometimes, picking a different download quality (for a video, audio, or image) should do the trick.

Choose different download quality for image, video, and audio

Set Safari download location to anything other than iCloud Drive

If you have set Safari to download files to iCloud Drive,  switch it to any other local storage folder using the steps below:

On iPhone or iPad: Settings > Safari > Downloads > On My iPhone or Other .

On Mac: Open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. From the General section, select Downloads , Desktop , or any local folder next to ‘ File download location .’

File download location in Safari on Mac

Stop Safari from automatically opening files after download

By default, Safari on Mac is set to open files after downloading them. That means if you download a ZIP file, Safari will automatically unzip it after downloading. In rare cases, this may cause the download to fail, not complete successfully, or not even start in the first place if the file you’re trying to download is incompatible. Therefore, it’s best to turn it off from Safari Settings > General > uncheck ‘ Open “safe” files after downloading .’

Restart your device

If Safari is unable to download files due to minor glitches, save your work and do a restart .

Make sure your device has sufficient free space

New file downloads will only succeed if your iPhone, iPad, or Mac has enough free space. So go to Settings, and check how much free storage you have. If it’s full, use these tutorials to free up space:

  • 50+ tips to free space on your iPhone and iPad
  • 30+ ways to free storage space on your Mac

Clear Safari history and cache

One of the most reliable solutions to fix Safari issues is clearing its history and website data .

On iPhone and iPad, you can do this from Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data .

On Mac, click History from the top menu bar and select Clear History .

Try disabling a recently installed Safari extension

If you could download files earlier but can’t after installing an extension, then that extension is likely the culprit. Remove it, restart your device, and now you should have no problem downloading files.

On iPhone and iPad: Head over to this guide on installing and removing Safari extensions .

On Mac: Go to Safari Settings > Extensions > select the extension and click Uninstall .

Uninstall extension from Safari on Mac

Update Safari

Safari updates are tied to system updates on iPhone and iPad. So, go to Settings app > General > Software Update and get the latest version of the operating system.

On Mac, you can update Safari from System Settings .

Update your Mac

If you’re on an older version of macOS, consider updating to the latest version, which should improve your computer’s overall working and stability.

On macOS Ventura and later, go to System Settings > General > Software Update . And on macOS Monterey and earlier, go to System Preferences > Software Update .

Where to Find Downloaded Files in Safari on a Mac and How to Manage Them

After downloading a file, it's not always easy to find where it saved. Here's how to find and manage Safari downloads on your Mac.

While browsing the web in Safari, it’s common to need to download files from different websites. But sometimes it can be a challenge to find where these Safari downloads are saved.

Below are several ways to find and manage Safari downloads on your Mac.

How to Download Files Using Safari

There are different ways to save items from Safari to your Mac , depending on the type of item you want to save. While some items in webpages can’t be downloaded, files, images, software, and apps often come with a dedicated download button. Otherwise, Control-click or two-finger tap an item to save or download it.

It’s best not to download software or apps if they aren’t from a trusted source.

Where to Find Safari Downloads on a Mac

Unless you’ve chosen otherwise, items that you’ve downloaded from Safari automatically go to your Downloads folder. To find this, open Finder and click Downloads from the sidebar or press Cmd + Option + L .

You can change where your downloaded files save, if you want:

  • Head to Safari > Preferences .
  • Click the General tab. Go to File download location , then choose from the popup. Select Ask for each download if you want to be in more control of each download.
  • If you want to select a specific destination, click Other and select your desired folder.

Use the Downloads Button in Safari

Quickly access your downloads in Safari by clicking the Downloads button, a downward arrow enclosed in a circle icon on the top-right of the Safari window. Note that this won’t appear unless you’ve recently downloaded an item.

Open the Downloads Stack in the Dock

Another way to immediately access your downloaded files is through the Dock. Your recent downloads are often found on the right side of the Dock in a stack. Hover over it to preview the contents or click to expand it.

Open the Downloads Folder in Finder

As we already mentioned, you can also find your Safari downloads using Finder. This is a valuable utility to locate items on our Mac. Simply click the magnifying button on your menu bar and type "downloads," or go to your Dock and click Finder to open the Finder window.

You can usually find the Downloads folder in the sidebar, under Favorites.

How to Manage Your Safari Downloads

There are several ways to manage your in-progress or completed downloads in Safari. To perform these actions, open the Downloads menu in Safari itself. Here’s what you can do:

  • Pause Downloads: If you’re currently downloading, click the stop button beside the file name to pause the download, then click the resume button to resume it again.
  • Remove a downloaded item: If you want to remove a single item from the list, Control-click the item and select Remove from List . You can also remove all your recently downloaded items by clicking Clear in the top right of the popup.

By default, Safari automatically deletes downloaded items after a day. If you want to change this:

  • Go to Safari > Preferences .
  • Click General , then go to Remove download list items . Choose from After one day , When Safari quits , Upon successful download , or Manually .

Manage Your Safari Downloads

There is a lot of content you can download on the web, and simply knowing how to download it is usually half the battle. But once you’ve done that, you can use the tips in this guide to find and manage your Safari downloads with ease, even customizing your download preferences to get fuller control over where your files save and when they get deleted.

A 404 error is an HTTP status code that means the page you were trying to reach on a website couldn't be found on their server .

To be clear, the error indicates that while the server itself is reachable , the specific page showing the error is not.

404 Not Found individual websites frequently customize error messages. So, keep in mind that the error might show up in just about any way imaginable, depending on what website it's shown from.

How You Might See the 404 Error

Here are some common ways in which you might see the HTTP 404 error displayed:

  • 404 Not Found
  • The requested URL [URL] was not found on this server
  • Error 404 Not Found
  • 404 File or Directory Not Found
  • HTTP 404 Not Found
  • 404 Page Not Found
  • Error 404. The page you're looking for can't be found.

These error messages can appear in any browser or any operating system . Most display inside the browser window just as web pages do.

404 errors received when opening links via Microsoft Office applications generate a The Internet site reports that the item you requested could not be found (HTTP/1.0 404) message inside the MS Office program.

When Windows Update produces one, it appears as a code 0x80244019 or as WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_NOT_FOUND .

Cause of HTTP 404 Errors

Technically, an Error 404 is a client-side error, implying that it's your mistake, either because you mistyped the URL or the page has been moved or removed from the website, and you should have known.

Another possibility is if a website has moved a page or resource without redirecting the old URL to the new one. When that happens, you'll receive a 404 error instead of being automatically routed to the new page.

Microsoft IIS web servers sometimes give more specific information about the cause of 404 Not Found errors by suffixing a number after the 404 , as in HTTP Error 404.3 - Not Found , which means MIME type restriction .

How to Fix the 404 Not Found Error

Retry the web page by pressing F5 , clicking/tapping the refresh/reload button, or repeatedly trying the URL from the address bar.

The 404 Not Found error might appear for several reasons even though no real issue exists, so sometimes a simple refresh will often load the page you were looking for.

Check for errors in the URL . Often times this error appears because the URL was typed wrong or the link selected points to the wrong URL.

Move up one directory level at a time in the URL until you find something.

For example, if www.web.com/a/b/c.htm gave you the 404 Not Found error, move up to www.web.com/a/b/ . If you get nothing here (or an error), move up to www.web.com/a/ . This should lead you toward what you're looking for or confirm that it's no longer available.

If you have moved up to the website's home page, try to run a search for the information you're looking for. If the site doesn't have a search function, try navigating to the page you want using category links to dig deeper into the site.

Search for the page from a popular search engine . It's possible that you simply have the entirely wrong URL in which case a quick Google or Bing search should get you where you want to go.

If you do find the page you were after, update your bookmark or favorite to avoid the HTTP 404 error in the future.

Clear your browser's cache if you have any indication that the 404 message might just be yours. For example, if you can reach the URL from your phone but not from your tablet, clearing the cache on your tablet's browser might help.

You might also consider clearing your browser's cookies or at least the one(s) involved with the website in question if clearing the cache didn't work.

Change the DNS servers used by your computer, but usually only if an entire website gives you a 404 error, especially if the website is available to those on other networks (e.g., your mobile phone network or a friend in another city).

Sitewide 404s errors on a website aren't common unless your ISP or government filters/censors websites. No matter the reason, if it does happen, giving another set of DNS servers a try is a good step to take. See our Free and Public DNS Servers List for some alternatives and instructions on doing this.

Contact the website directly. If they've removed the page you're after, then the 404 error is completely legitimate, and they should be able to tell you that. If they've moved the page and are generating errors instead of redirecting visitors to the new page, they'll be happy to hear from you so they can fix it.

If you suspect everyone is getting a 404 error for this site, but you're not sure, a quick check on X (formerly Twitter) might help clear it up. All you have to do is search X for #websitedown , as in #facebookdown or #youtubedown . Users on X are usually the first to start talking about a website outage. Learn how to tell if a website is down for everyone or just you for some more help.

Finally, if all else fails, wait. No, it's not fun, but it might be your only course of action, especially if you're confident the 404 error shouldn't be happening (i.e., the page really should be at the URL you have and others are having the same problem and find it equally strange).

You can find 404 errors on your own website through tools like DeadLinkChecker.com and ATOMSEO .

Errors Similar to Error 404

Some other client-side error messages related to the 404 Not Found error include 400 Bad Request , 401 Unauthorized , 403 Forbidden , and  408 Request Timeout .

Several server-side HTTP status codes also exist, like the popular 500 Internal Server Error . You can see all of them in our HTTP Status Code Errors  list.

If you’re aware of pages on your website with broken links, redirect or correct them. If a 404 error appears due to a deleted page, consider restoring or redirecting it to new and related content.

Trick #4: Use Your IP Address

Another trick that you can do for you to fix the problem is by using the IP address of the URL that you are using to search on your Safari browser.

If in case that you do not know the IP address, then you can go ahead and use a tool to help you in finding the domain from the Internet.

Once that you are able to access it using this trick, then it only means that the error is in regard to the DNS server problem. This is what you need to fix.

Trick #5: Fix Your DNS Settings

As we mentioned earlier for trick #3, the problem can be with your DNS settings. The reason why you are experiencing a hard time accessing a webpage is that you are actually not using a reliable DNS server.

DNS is known as the domain name system which is commonly used for all users to load a certain webpage over the internet.

What it does is that it actually tries to convert the webpage URL to its IP address. This is because it is easier to recognize. With this, you can go ahead and try to use the Google DNS server. It is more reliable to use rather than other DNS servers.

For you to be able to modify your DNS server, here are the things that you need to do.

  • Launch the Setting of your iPhone device and tap on the “Wi-Fi” option.
  • And then, tap on the icon that is beside the domain name.
  • Tap on the “Configure DNS” option. Once that you see “Automatic”, then change it into “Manual”.
  • Tap on the “Add Server” option and enter the Google DNS server. This could be 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4.

Trick 6: Try To Reset Your Network Settings

If you have already done all the tricks that we have mentioned above and you are still having the same issue, then you can go ahead and do this other solution for you. This is by resetting your network settings on your iPhone device.

Doing this will remove all the Wi-Fi passwords that you have and as well as your DNS settings. That is why you have to make sure that you remember your password. Here is how to reset your network settings.

  • Go ahead and launch Setting on your iPhone device.
  • Then after that, go ahead and tap on “General”.
  • The next thing to do is to tap the “Reset” option from the list shown on your screen.
  • Then after that, go ahead and tap on “Reset Network Settings”. Confirm this action on the pop-up window that will appear on your screen.

Trick #7: Force Restart Your iPhone Device

The last trick that we are going to show you is by resetting your iPhone device forcibly. This way, you will be able to fix any problem that you are having on your iPhone device which includes the one that you are encountering on Safari browser.

Doing a force restart on your iPhone device is just like restarting it on a regular way. You will not lose any of the data that you have on your device.

You can check out a guide on how you can force restart your iPhone device because this will depend on the model of the iPhone you have.

But if you are using an iPhone 8 or an earlier version or if you are using an iPad, then all you have to do is to press and hold the top or the side button until you see the slider appears on your screen.

It’s not the site. iOS 15 is the problem. One that they know about. I spent just under an hour on the phone with apple care yesterday about the same issue. There are no work arounds. I was transferred to a senior specialist who told me that they know about it and are working on a patch. No timeline for that tho :/

Hello jamiel288,

Thanks for reaching out to us in Apple Support Communities about accessing a video on a website. We're happy to help by looking into this more!

This error typically means that there is a problem with the actual video on the site or that the video has been removed from the site. You can test this by accessing the website from a different device and if you receive the same error, you will need to reach out to the website developer directly.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards.

OneDrive not working on Safari

I'm using a Corporate MS365 account which I access using Safari on my 2021 Mac Book Pro.

Over the last couple of weeks I'm having issues when trying to access documents in OneDrive.

I first get a message saying that OneDrive needs storage on my mac. I get the option to either 'Don''t Allow' or 'Allow' Whichever one I pick results in a further error message, basically saying it can't load.

Then after about 10 minutes if I persevere it will eventually load.

My support desk think I'm going mad, so if anyone out there knows what may be happening and why I'd love to hear it.

Dear respected CatalystV12V,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

I’m sorry you’re having a problem with OneDrive but based on your description we can work together to resolve it.

For the situation you encountered, we deeply understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it.

As per your description, First please allow me to explain regarding to your error message.

Generally, w hen you are prompted with the option to either "Don't Allow" or "Allow" OneDrive to access storage on your Mac, it is referring to the permission to access files and folders on your computer.

If you choose "Don't Allow," OneDrive will not be able to access any files or folders on your Mac. This means you won't be able to sync files between your OneDrive cloud storage and your Mac OS machine.

If you choose "Allow," OneDrive will have the necessary permissions to access files and folders on your Mac. This will enable you to synchronize files between your OneDrive storage and your computer, allowing you to upload, download using the OneDrive app.

May I know have you tried reboot Mac in safe mode and determine whether background programs are causing the issue. For detailed information, please check  this article .

Also, make sure you have the latest version number of the OneDrive sync client for Mac on your Mac, sign-in your corporate account and then sync OneDrive into your Mac OS, then try to access documents in OneDrive.

Meanwhile, maybe the local settings had affected the application. Thus, we would like you to check whether the issue is related to your user profile. In this situation, we suggest you  creating a new user profile on Mac   on your Mac and see if any improvement. It is worth trying because it will help you narrow down whether the issue is caused by a specific corrupted user profile.

Disclaimer: Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology.

We appreciate your understanding that sometimes the initial suggestions may not resolve the problem very soon. However, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation. So, please kindly provide more information below to let us work further.

1.If possible, could you please upload a screenshot of error message for our reference, so we can understand your exact scenario and provide our suggestion in a productive manner, perhaps some related screenshots will be helpful.

2. Can you recall when this behavior starts e.g., after update Mac OS.

Appreciate your patience and understanding and thank you for your time and cooperation.

How to Solve The HTML5 Video ‘File Not Found’ Error

Summary: Are you unable to watch videos on Vimeo, YouTube, or other websites due to the ‘HTML5 Video File Not Found‘ error? It could be a web page backend issue or your browser does not support HTML5 videos. This post shares how best you can tackle the HTML5 video error problem and make your videos playable again in any browser.

Free Download for Windows

What is a HTML5 video file?

What is html5 video “file not found” error, why do you get an ‘html5 video file not found’ error.

  • Is the Video not Playing in Firefox or Chrome?

HTML5 is an enhanced version of HTML (HyperText Markup Language). As the next level to HTML, HTML5 has incorporated video and audio specifications, which now allow users to watch videos online without any plugins. The webmasters need to use special HTML5 coding and include WebM, MP4, and OGG formats on their web pages. Before HTML5 videos were only played using the Flash Player.

You can view HTML5 videos on all popular browsers such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari.

If you encountered an “HTML5 video not found” error while playing a video on any website then it implies your browser doesn’t support the HTML5 format codecs or your browser doesn’t have the proper video codec installed.

There are could be multiple reasons that could be held responsible to get an ‘HTML5 Video File Not Found’ error –

  • Website Issue – HTML5 video error occurs when you try to watch a video embedded on a web page. It is mostly a website backend issue and is fixed by the webmaster or the developer of the site.
  • Browser’s Issue – However, sometimes the problem could also be the browser. Below mentioned are there scenarios related to the browser –
  • The browser in which you are trying to view the video may not support HTML5 format codecs. You can check this, by playing videos on multiple browsers.
  • If you are able to watch the web page video in other browsers, it is the HTML5 compatibility problem with a particular browser. For example, a web page video may not open in Firefox and throw an HTML5 video error. However, in Chrome it may play perfectly.
  • The possibility is also that the browser’s cache and cookies do not let the web page videos play. You can confirm this if the video plays fine in the new Incognito window.

Thus, there are various reasons why the ‘HTML5 video not found’ error occurs.

How to fix the ‘HTML5 Video: File Not Found’ error

There are various ways to fix HTML5 video errors. We suggest you follow the order given here while troubleshooting – from simpler to complex solutions.

5 Ways to solve ‘HTML5 Video File Not Found’ error

  • Update your browser
  • Remove cookies and cache
  • Toggle hardware acceleration
  • Start the browser in Safe Mode
  • Download supporting codecs

Method 1 – Update your browser

Not all web browsers support HTML5 videos. Ensure you are using an updated version of the browser.

Below are the popular browser versions that support HTML5

To check if you’re using an updated version of Chrome do the following:

  • Open Google Chrome and click on the three vertical dots in the top-right corner
  • Click  Help > About Google Chrome
  • If you see an option Update Google Chrome , click on it. If not, your Google Chrome is updated

Similarly, you may check and update other browsers too.

Method 2 – Remove cookies and cache

Clearing the cache and cookies in the browser helps most of the time. Although cache and cookies stored in a browser’s directory serve to provide a better user experience, sometimes it leads to errors while playing multimedia files. Try to view the video again after deleting the cache, cookies, and browser history.

In Google Chrome, you can do the following to delete cache and cookies:

  • Open Chrome and click on the three vertical dots on the top right
  • Click to follow Settings > Advanced > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data
  • Choose and tick the checkboxes: Browsing history, Download history, Cookies, and other site data, and Cached image and files
  • To clear the entire cache, select All time in the time range dropdown
  • Click  Clear data

Now restart your computer and try to play video in your browser.

For steps to remove cache and cookies in other web browsers, visit:  Read More

Method 3 – Toggle hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration helps in opening graphics-intensive media like games and videos etc., in the browser.

When you turn off the hardware acceleration in a browser, only your computer’s GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) will be used to process all the graphics-intensive media. This lowers the load on the browser and may fix the HTML5 video errors.

In Google Chrome, you can disable hardware acceleration by following the below steps:

  • Click on the three dots in the right corner of Google Chrome
  • Click to follow Settings > Advanced > System
  • Toggle off the  Use hardware acceleration when available  option.
  • Now Restart Chrome

Now try to your videos in the browser. It should not give an ‘HTML5: Video file not found’ error.

You can disable hardware acceleration for other browsers too in their setting.

Method 4 – Start the browser in Safe Mode

Starting the browser in Safe Mode usually resolves many problems. Safe Mode may not fix the HTML5 issue, but you may know the cause of the problem and find a solution.

So what happens to the browser in Safe Mode?

  • In Safe Mode hardware acceleration is automatically turned-off
  • A few settings are reset
  • All add-ons, plugins, etc., are disabled

If the video plays without any error or interruption in Safe Mode, it means any of these settings in your browser could be creating the problem. You can change those settings or disable the plugins or extensions that are creating the HTML5 video error.

Method 5 – Download HTML5 supporting codecs

An ‘HTML5: Video file not found’ error indicates either the browser you are using doesn’t support HTML5 or the webpage doesn’t have the proper video codec.

You may contact the website’s developer to install HTML5 supporting codecs for all three WebM, MP4, and OGG formats.

In case you are an Internet user who witnesses this error, then ensure using the updated browser that supports HTML5. Further, if the error persists, try the other ways given in this post to fix the issue.

Is the Video not Playing in Firefox or Chrome ?

What worked for some, might work for you too!

Here are a couple of solutions, which various users found helpful when their HTML5 videos didn’t play in any browser.

‘I had HTML5 videos that would not play in Firefox. I was using an updated browser and removed cache and cookies too, but no help.

What I did: What worked for me was updating my video drivers. I have the NVIDIA GTS 240 driver on my computer. Downloaded and installed the latest one. Next, restart the computer and now Chrome 38.0.2125.77 started playing HTML5 videos again on YouTube, Vimeo, and others.

131 million in U.S. live in areas with unhealthy pollution levels, lung association finds

Image: People walk in Central Park as smoke from wildfires in Canada cause hazy conditions in New York on June 7, 2023.

Nearly 40% of people in the U.S. are living in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution and the country is backsliding on clean air progress as the effects of climate change intensify, according to a new report from the American Lung Association.

The organization’s report — its 25th annual analysis of the “State of the Air” in the country — found that between 2020 and 2022, 131 million people were living in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution. The figure increased by nearly 12 million since the last survey a year ago.

The report also found that people in the United States experienced more “very unhealthy” or “hazardous” air quality days than any time in the survey’s history.

Katherine Pruitt, the national senior director for clean air policy at the American Lung Association, said climate change is chipping away at decades of cleanup efforts made through the Clean Air Act, a federal law passed in 1963 to regulate air pollution and set air quality standards.

“The changes happening in our climate and with heat and drought, and especially wildfire, have started to undo some of that progress we’ve made,” Pruitt said. “It is distressing to find that so many people are living with air quality that threatens their health.”

Wildfires are a fast-growing pollution source that policymakers are struggling to address. Climate scientists expect wildfire smoke to increase in the future, as greenhouse gas emissions push temperatures higher. The lung association’s analysis comes to the same conclusion as peer-reviewed research published last year in the journal Nature . Marshall Burke, an author of that study, suggested that wildfire smoke has undone about 25% of the Clean Air Act’s progress.

“If we take some steps back and tell what the root cause is, it’s the burning of fossil fuels,” said Dr. Lisa Patel, a clinical associate professor who practices as a pediatrician at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health. “We don’t need to be in this situation. We have the technology, we have the federal investment to get on renewables. What we need now is the political will.”

Every year, the “State of the Air” report analyzes air quality data of the three previous years. The analysis focuses on ozone exposure and on short-term and year-round exposures to particle pollution. The report issues grades for each measure and then summarizes how many areas pass or fail for each grade. Nearly 44 million people now live in areas that failed at all three criteria, according to the report.

Small particles are a significant concern because they can penetrate into people’s lungs, circulate in the bloodstream and affect other organs.

These particles, which are merely a fraction of the size of a human hair, have been shown to raise risk for asthma, lung cancer, chronic lung diseases, preterm birth and pregnancy loss.

Patel, who is also the executive director of the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health, said she has noticed an uptick in preterm births during periods of heavy wildfire events and has begun to counsel parents about how heat and smoke are a risk factor during pregnancy.

“When we have weeks of poor air quality, we see more pregnant individuals coming in and delivering before 37 weeks,” Patel said, adding that parents often question whether their actions could have contributed to an early birth. “When they ask about risks for premature birth, I do say climate change. Both heat and wildfires are a risk factor. They’re not in your control.”

Additionally, Patel said she has noticed that patients in her pediatric clinic often complain of nasal infections, eye irritation and asthmatic exacerbations, among other ailments, when wildfire smoke events happen in California.

Pruitt said particle pollution concerns once centered on the industrial Midwest and the Northeast. But in this report, for the first time, all 25 of the cities with the most daily particle pollution were in the West. Most were in California.

“Early in our history, a lot of particle pollution was coming from coal-fired power plants and transportation sources and industrial processes,” Pruitt said. “As the Clean Air Act has cleaned those sources up, particle pollution problems in the eastern U.S. have gotten much less serious. But in the West, they’ve of course had the same access to regulations and cleanups, but they are also being gobsmacked by climate change and wildfire.”

Daniel Mendoza, an assistant professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Utah, said many communities in western states are dealing with acute, short-term pollution episodes rather than chronic exposures over a long period of time. Scientists are still trying to untangle how damaging wildfire episodes are in comparison to extended exposures from industrial sources.

“Not all bad air pollution is created equal,” Mendoza said.

Pollution from transportation and industrial sources could continue to decline if the Environmental Protection Agency is able to implement the more stringent standards it has proposed. The EPA proposed a rule last year that would require nearly all of the country’s coal and large gas plants to reduce or capture about 90% of their carbon dioxide emissions by 2038 .

This March, the agency implemented stricter rules to reduce tailpipe emissions from passenger vehicles . Another EPA policy, aimed at curbing nitrogen oxide pollution that travels across states , was challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2022, the Supreme Court limited the administration’s ability to use the Clean Air Act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The report has one bright spot: Ozone pollution has continued its dramatic improvement. About 2.4 million fewer people are living in areas with unhealthy ozone pollution in comparison to last year.

Wildfire smoke has worsened in the time since this analysis was complete: Americans in 2023 breathed in more wildfire smoke than any other year on record, the Stanford researchers found last year.
