25,000 Miles in the Tesla Model Y Performance: The Good, the Bad and Our Verdict

After two years with the model y, we're very familiar with tesla's crossover suv.

• We've had a Tesla Model Y Performance for two years now.
• In that time we've drag raced it, done road trips, and lived with it for 25,000 miles.
• But what you probably want to know is how it's held up in that time. Dig in to find out.

We've lived with our long-term Tesla Model Y for two years now, and in that time we've taken it along highways, biways, and every other way you can imagine. We've even taken it to the track. If you're not familiar with our long-term test program , it's where we here at Edmunds welcome cars into our garage for more than the average two-week loan. Instead we either buy them with our own cash or an automaker loans them to us for a year so we can suss out what a real ownership experience looks like.

Am I Ready for an EV?

• EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.
• If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station With public charging infrastructure still in its infancy, the user experience can be maddeningly inconsistent. Tesla owners tend to rave about the reliability and speed of the company's proprietary Supercharger stations, but rival DC fast options have thus far been plagued by technical issues and overcrowding. It's an evolving landscape and our best advice is to do your research on the available options for the EV you want to buy.
• Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,600 or more If your existing electrical service can handle the additional demands of EV charging, you may be able to add Level 2 charging at home for less than a grand, including installation. But your costs will multiply if you need to upgrade your electrical panel or add a dedicated circuit.

In the case of our Model Y, Tesla's fully electric crossover SUV, we bought it back in 2020 and we liked it enough to keep it for two years instead of the typical one. We opted for the dual-motor Performance model and tacked on the so-called Full Self-Driving Capability. We also added the lowered suspension, red paint, and Tesla's optional Induction wheels to boost curb appeal. All in, the Model Y cost us $68,700, a bargain compared to what a similar model would cost you in 2022, as prices have risen to over $85,000. Yikes.

As with any car we welcome into our long-term fleet, there's good, there's bad, and there's been a lot of lessons learned. In our 25,000-mile sum-up video we go over everything we've experienced with the Model Y in our two laps around the sun with it. There's plenty to like, including its generous cargo capacity, enjoyable driving dynamics, and of course its straight-line acceleration. There's also plenty we don't like, namely the stiff ride, not-quite-right build quality, and the difficulties we've encountered when trying to service the Model Y.

Tesla Model Y towing experience: real-world numbers hauling a trailer in Canada

When the Tesla Model Y was first released in March in the US, many were surprised it did not come with a tow hitch as standard equipment.

That was soon corrected, when less than a month later Tesla added the tow hitch as a $1,300 CAD option in the Design Studio.

Now that the electric SUV has been out for nearly 6 months, we are starting to see the first real-world tests of the Model Y hauling trailers on camping trips across the country.

Stéphane, a Long Range (LR) Model Y owner in Quebec shared his recent towing experience with Drive Tesla . We’re going to take a detailed look at how it performs hauling a pretty large trailer nearly 500kms (310 miles) roundtrip with lots of elevation changes, and see how it impacts the range and efficiency.

Remember, the LR Model Y is rated for 509kms (316 miles) on a full charge.

The Trailer

Stéphane owns an Alto F1743 trailer made by Safari Condo, which has a dry weight of 1,785lbs. According to Stephane, the trailer probably weighed closer to 2,200lbs with all of their camping gear inside.

That’s still well below the 3,500lb towing capacity of the Model Y.

On this particular camping trip, Stéphane and his family were travelling from just outside Laval, Quebec to Coaticook, about 220km away.

This route has a number of large elevation changes, which put the power and efficiency of the Model Y to the test.

On the drive to Coaticook, his first time towing a trailer with the Model Y, Stéphane says he was quite liberal with the accelerator, maintaining a speed with Traffic Aware Cruise Control (TACC) of 105km/h, or 65mph (it is important to remember that Autopilot is not available when Tow Mode is active).

He says he also occasionally passed other vehicles at about 115km/h (71 mph). Hauling the trailer at such high speeds had a big impact on range. After starting the trip with the battery at 100%, it was already down to 30% at about the half-way point thanks to a not-so-great efficiency of 396Wh/km (637Wh/mi) .

After slowing down to a more reasonable 95km/h (59 mph), he was able to bring his efficiency down to 296Wh/km (476Wh/mi)  and reach the campground with 9% left on the battery. Fortunately the campground had power at each site, so he was able to plug in right away without leaving.

On the return journey, Stéphane tells Drive Tesla he learned from his mistakes and kept TACC at 95km/h (59 mph) for most of the drive, and was able to maintain an efficiency rating of around 300Wh/km (482Wh/mi) , giving him plenty of juice to make it back home.

For comparison, regular highway driving in summer temperatures for a LR Model Y will result in an efficiency rating of about 180-200Wh/km (290-320Wh/mi). That means towing a trailer of this size results in about a 40-50% drop in efficiency.

Other Observations

According to the Model Y owners manual , towing in Canada is restricted to 89km/h (55mph). From the wording of this particular section, it appears the vehicle would be electronically limited to that speed when Tow Mode is active.

But Stéphane tells us, and it can be clearly seen in his photos, he was able to drive above the 89km/h limit, and as mentioned reach speeds around 115km/h at certain points.

As far as the overall driving experience while towing, Stéphane says the power of the Model Y made it feel like he wasn’t towing at all, with almost normal acceleration. But it’s important to keep that power delivery smooth and not mash the accelerator as you might normally do, because as he puts it, “ the energy was melting like a popsicle in the sun. ”

Since this trip, Stéphane has gone on several more, and reports efficiency has been consistently below 300Wh/km while towing. The real test will come later this month, when he plans a much longer camping trip to les Iles de la Madeleine, which will require stopping 8 times for charging, extending the total trip time by 3 hours.

Despite the extra drain on the battery while towing, Stéphane says his Model Y “ was just perfect to tow “, and will hopefully get the Cybertruck when it comes out to get even more range.

Actual driving range and charging performance may vary depending on several factors including Supercharger type, vehicle configuration, state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation change, among others.

Tesla launches Model Y with large battery and rear-wheel drive

A new variant of the Model Y is now available in Europe. The "Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive" variant has a WLTP range of 600 kilometres and is slightly more expensive than the regular "Rear-Wheel Drive" variant with the smaller battery.

That means there are now four variants of the Model Y available, at least in some European countries. The configurators show the long-range version is available in Belgium , Czech Republic , Denmark , Estonia , Greece , Spain , Germany , and Norway , among others. However, it is not (yet) sold in France , the Netherlands , and the UK , for example.

The base version of the Model Y, called “Rear-Wheel Drive,” has a WLTP range of up to 455 kilometres and is fitted with an LFP battery. The new “Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive” version can go up to 600 kilometres between charges. It has the 2170 round cell battery known from the all-wheel drive models. The “Long Range All-Wheel Drive” accelerates faster thanks to the second motor (5.0 instead of 5.9 seconds to 100 kph), but only has a WLTP range of 533 kilometres. The top model is the Model Y Performance, labelled “Performance All-Wheel Drive” in the configurator.

As usual, Tesla provides hardly any information about the drive itself in its configurator. The apparently leaked type approval indicates an output of 220 kW with a torque of 350 Nm. Consumption is said to be 15.5 kWh/100 km, which enables the high range with the known battery. By comparison, the all-wheel drive model consumes 16.9 kWh/100 km.

An interesting detail: Tesla has only had one rim variant certified in the WLTP. For the Model Y “Long Range All-Wheel Drive,” for example, these were the 20-inch rims for those 533 kilometres. It was previously said that with the 19-inch rims with aero hubcaps, the EV has an “estimated” range of 565 kilometres. Tesla has had both versions certified for the “Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive,” with 600 kilometres being achieved with the 19-inch wheels and 565 kilometres with the 20-inch induction wheels according to WLTP. In other words, even if comparing the WLTP ranges on paper suggests that the rear-wheel drive model offers almost 70 kilometres more range, the difference is more in the region of 30 kilometres when comparing the same rims.

Beyond that, there don’t seem to be any other differences to the Model Y with the same battery and the all-wheel drive available to date – the equipment and charging performance are the same. However, the difference lies in the price. For example, in Germany, the new variant is about 6,000 euros cheaper than the all-wheel drive model. The omitted components for the front electric motor alone cannot explain this difference.

In other countries, the difference is significantly smaller. In Belgium, the new model variant starts at 49,970 euros and thus costs only 3,000 euros less than the all-wheel drive version. The same is true for i.e. Spain and Denmark.

The new version is also built in Grünheide. Availability is very similar to all other drive variants: These are specified in the configurator as 2-3 weeks, whereas for the new model it is 2-4 weeks.

Tesla has launched a new trim of the Model Y in some European countries: a new Long Range rear-wheel-drive Model Y.

Last quarter, Tesla had disappointing deliveries and added 46,000 vehicles to its inventory . Some of those were already sold in transit, but overall, the automaker added over 100,000 vehicles to its inventory.

Tesla, like most other automakers, needs cheaper vehicles in order to counter the high-interest rates.

Now, the automaker has introduced a new trim of its popular Model Y to offer another cheaper option:

The new Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel-Drive is now the new second cheapest Model Y, starting at €48,990 – €4,000 more than the standard range rear-wheel-drive:

It comes with the longest range of the Model Y lineup with 600 km (373 miles) on the WLTP standard when equipped with 19″ Gemini wheels.

Tesla claims the “lowest cost per kilometer in the electric SUV market (14.9 kWh/100 km).”

The new version is available in most, but not all of Tesla’s European markets:

That's the model I'd buy here in the US. I don't need AWD and that saves weight and improves range. I hope Tesla will add this configuration when the updated model Y shows up in the US.

I love more powertrain options. There are plenty of people who don’t recall need all-wheel-drive, but they would need or prefer longer range.

This is a no-brainer and should be available in all markets in my opinion.

2025 Tesla Model Y (Project Juniper): What we know/expect

• America's best-selling e-SUV to get its first 'facelift'
• New Tesla Model Y expected to feature updated exterior, interior & specs

Tesla plans to present a refresh to the Model Y , the SUV sibling of the Model 3, and begin production of the updated version in 2024, Reuters reported on March 1, 2023. Codenamed ‘Tesla Juniper,’ the electric SUV could go on sale in the U.S. as the 2025 Tesla Model Y.

Here’s our general expectation from the new Tesla SUV. Please note that some information and visuals presented in this article represent the current model year, and we will keep revising this page as new updates surface.

Design & Exterior

Similar to the 2024 Tesla Model 3 , we expect the 2025 Model Y to feature a mildly updated exterior with new bumpers and wheels. Like today, in addition to a bigger body, fender flares would immediately differentiate it from the sedan. Our rendering (pictured above) includes a curvy L-shaped cut-out on the sides of the front bumper as a visual cue for the SUV.

Adaptive Headlamps

In European markets, Tesla should offer adaptive headlights on the new Model Y for enhanced safety. When making a turn, adaptive headlights automatically turn based on the steering angle, yaw, and driving speed to optimize the illumination of the road ahead. Tesla calls this feature ‘Adaptive Main Beam’ and has recently enabled it in the new Model 3 with a software update in Europe.

Active Hood

Another safety upgrade on the new Model Y will likely be ‘Active Hood,’ designed to offer improved pedestrian safety. At speeds of ~30-52 km/h (~19-32 mph), if a vehicle collides with a pedestrian, the rear part of the hood may automatically raise by approximately 80 mm (3.1 in.). The likelihood of pedestrian injuries would reduce as a result of the increased space between the hood and the components under it.

New colors & wrap option

Tesla may offer the new Model Y in two fresh colors: Ultra Red and Stealth Gray. These paints would be in addition to a few carried-over options, possibly including Pearl White Multi-Coat, Solid Black, and Deep Blue Metallic.

As for the current Model Y, customers would be able to purchase wraps for the new Model Y. We expect Tesla to offer a clear wrap in gloss and satin versions for USD 5,000 and various colored wraps for USD 7,500 (white/gray/black)/USD 8,000 (blue/green/rose gold/red). Both wraps would protect the paint, and the latter would even allow customers to change the color of the vehicle’s exterior and give it a refresh whenever they want.

Interior & Features

Inside, the new Model Y should sport a redesigned dashboard and a swiveling function touchscreen infotainment system, which is unavailable in the current model. Tesla may improve the quality of materials and introduce new steering wheel options with the refresh.

New interior appointments

Tesla may employ a new steering wheel inspired by the Semi and Cybertruck in the new Model Y and offer a steering yoke with a steer-by-wire system as an option. The facelifted crossover SUV may feature new, ventilated seats, new RGB ambient lights, a new, 17-speaker sound system with two subwoofers and two amplifiers, and maybe even an 8-inch rear screen. Improved microphones for enhanced phone calls and increased quietness achieved by 360º acoustic glazing could round out the important interior changes.

New materials

Tesla discontinued wood trim in the Model 3 with the facelift, and it may do the same in the Model Y. The Model Y’s interior comes in black and black-white color schemes and includes wood trim in the sportier-looking fully dark option. Wood trim may suit the two-tone color scheme, but it somewhat looks out of place in the all-black cabin if you ask us. The company may introduce Alcantara or another premium artificial material as a replacement. ABS-bonded foam non-woven fabric is another possibility.

Interestingly, Tesla updated the Model Y in China in September 2023, including small features like RGB ambient lighting on the dashboard and a new textile material in place of the wood trim.

Like the Model 3 Highland, Tesla could make efforts to make the Model Y’s cabin quieter. It has installed dual-pane glass on all windows and the windshield to isolate noise in the electric sedan further.

Specifications

According to Tesla Tech Central , which cites a reliable source within Tesla, the upcoming 2025 Model Y might bring significant changes to its specifications compared to the current model. The key highlight is a new battery architecture, enabling an impressive range of 400 miles. Notably, there are talks of a potential charging input of 350 kW, achievable with a higher voltage of 800 volts.

Furthermore, improvements to the suspension system will enhance the vehicle’s ability to handle street imperfections, while an upgraded powertrain is also expected. These rumors suggest exciting advancements for the Model Y refresh, but the developments remain unconfirmed.

Today, the Model Y is available in Standard, Long Range, and Performance variants. The base variant has only one motor, which powers the rear wheels. It takes 6.6 seconds for a 0-60 mph sprint and can achieve a top speed of 135 mph. Its EPA-est. range is 260 miles.

The Long Range variant has an additional motor that powers the front wheels and changes the drivetrain layout has the same top speed – 135 mph. On a full charge, EPA estimates it can travel up to 310 miles.

Performance is also a dual-motor AWD variant but with a more powerful powertrain. It takes just 3.5 seconds for a 0-60 mph sprint, and it has a much higher top speed of 155 mph. Its EPA-est. range is quite impressive, too – 279 miles.

In the new Model Y line-up, the Standard and Long Range variants may have a lower top speed of 125 mph. However, their EPA-est. range figures could be slightly higher, up to approximately 360 miles.

Price & Release date

Reuters’ source sharing developments around the new Model Y project says that Tesla has scheduled the production start of the refresh in October 2024. That’s a projected timeline, though, which can change because of various external factors. Regardless, a recent development has indicated that even if Tesla reveals the new Model Y in other markets in 2024, it will continue selling the current model throughout the year in the United States.

Tesla has confirmed to its sales staff (via X /teslascope) that it doesn’t plan to launch a refreshed Model Y in the U.S. in 2024. Perhaps, as seen in the Model 3 Highland’s case, the Model Y Juniper may go to other markets first and arrive in North America a few months later.

On December 27, 2023, Bloomberg reported that according to its sources, production of the new Model Y in China may begin as early as mid-2024 (May-August 2024). Tesla has a fully-owned factory in the country in Shanghai, where it manufactures both Model 3 and Model Y. This plant became the world’s first production site of the facelifted Model 3 in 2023, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the same happens in the case of the facelifted Model Y in 2024. The facelifted Model Y will feature clearly visible exterior and interior changes, as per Bloomberg’s sources.

As of March 12, 2024, the Model Y retails at USD 43,990 (Standard)/USD 48,990 (Long Range)/USD 52,490 (Performance). Tesla levies a USD 1,390 destination fee and a USD 250 order fee over the vehicle price.

We don’t see Tesla rolling out a major price revision with the facelift. By the end of 2024, the base price of the Model Y may have reached close to USD 45,000.

• If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
• An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
• An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
• A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
• You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
• You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
• You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
• You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
• You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
• You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
• You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
• You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
• The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
• An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
• A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
• An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
• A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
• A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
• An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
• Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Tesla Quietly Starts Selling Cheaper Model Y With 279-Mile Range

You won't find this variant of Tesla's electric SUV on the configurator. At least not yet.

• The electric SUV, however, is in stock at a number of Tesla stores.
• With up to 279 miles of EPA-rated range, this Model Y variant costs $2000 less than a Model Y Long Range .

Tesla's pulling a page from In-N-Out Burger's playbook and giving Model Y buyers the chance to order a cheaper variant off a proverbial secret menu. Though the automaker's website currently restricts Model Y orders to those of the $54,380 Long Range or $58,380 Performance variants, Tesla's list of online inventory shows that a number of its stores are stocked with salable base Model Y EVs that wear a starting price $2000 less than that of the Long Range model. (As of this writing, however, it seems most of these entry-level Ys in inventory include at least $2000 worth of optional 20-inch wheels and tires, thus effectively negating the base model's cost savings over its Long Range counterpart.)

Unlike the prior entry-level rear-drive Model Y, which Tesla stopped producing in 2021, this new base-level Model Y comes standard with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. It also packs a greater EPA-rated range relative to its single-motor forebear.

With up to 279 miles of driving range on a full charge, the cheapest Model Y variant betters the old Standard Range model's range by 35 miles. That said, it falls short of the Model Y Long Range and Performance's figures by up to 51 and 24 miles, respectively.

Powering the electric motors of this latest addition to the Model Y line is Tesla's 4680 battery pack, which the company produces at its Texas plant. Though Tesla is mum on the pack's rated capacity and other details, given the lesser range of Model Y's equipped with this pack, it's safe to assume the useable capacity of these batteries falls short of the 75.0-kWh pack that powered a 2020 Model Y Long Range we previously tested, which was EPA-rated to travel up to 316 miles on a full charge. We managed just 220 miles of range while testing the Model Y on our 75-mph highway test.

Whether the range deficit of the base 2023 Model Y relative to its Long Range kin is worth its $2000 price reduction is a matter of personal preference. That said, the extra stacks in a base Model Y buyers' pocket can go toward added options for their new EV or a lower monthly payment or paying off those gambling debts.

Look, we're not here to judge. We're only here to let you know that Tesla offers its own version of an Animal Style burger for the Model Y.

Tesla has launched a new variant of the its best-selling vehicle, the Model Y, to select European countries. The new Model Y variant currently stands as the second most-affordable and longest range variant of the all-electric crossover. 

Tesla announced the launch of the new Model Y Long Range Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) motor in a post from its Tesla Europe & Middle East account on social media platform X. As per the EV maker, the vehicle comes with a WLTP range of 600 km (372 miles). In comparison, the base Model Y RWD is listed with a WLTP range of 455 km (282 miles), the Model Y Long Range Dual Motor All Wheel Drive (AWD) is listed with a WLTP range of 533 km (331 miles), and the Model Y Performance is listed with a WLTP range of 514 km (319 miles).

Tesla also noted that the Model Y Long Range RWD is now available for orders in Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Poland, Slovenia, Romania, and and Hungary. The vehicle is not offered in countries like the UK and the Netherlands as of writing. 

The Model Y Long Range RWD starts at 48,990 euros ($52,500), making it the second most affordable variant of the vehicle in the countries where it is offered. For context, the Model Y Long Range Dual Motor AWD and the Model Y Performance start at 54,990 euros ($59,000) and 59,990 euros ($64,300), respectively. The most affordable Model Y is still the base RWD variant, which starts at 44,990 euros ($48,200). 

The launch of the Model Y Long Range RWD was widely praised by the electric vehicle community, several of whom asked if the electric vehicle maker would also be making the Model 3 Long Range RWD available for retail consumers. The Model 3 Long Range RWD was launched in the UK in April 2023 , but the all-electric sedan was only sold as a fleet vehicle for commercial customers. 

Tesla’s Long Range RWD configurations have proven quite popular because they feature a large battery pack at a fairly affordable price. This is one of the reasons why Tesla opted to start its original ramp of the Model 3 sedan with the Long Range RWD variant. At the time, the Model 3 Long Range RWD was praised by reviewers for its range, features, and its driving dynamics.

• Separately, a report said Tesla was scrapping its low-cost Model 2 plans.

Tesla 's stock decline continued Friday after a report said it was scrapping its plans for a low-cost Model 2 and as it dealt with a sizable inventory buildup, which appears to have led to sharp price cuts on some of its Model Y vehicles.

The stock dropped as much as 6% on Friday, extending its weeklong decline to about 8% and its year-to-date decline to about 34%.

Reuters, citing three people familiar with the matter as well as internal company messages, reported Tesla canceled plans to develop its long-promised low-cost car that was expected to be just $25,000. 

Instead of developing a low-priced car, Tesla plans to continue to focus on developing self-driving robo-taxis, the report said. 

"Elon's directive is to go all in on robo-taxi," a source told Reuters.

The reported move comes amid concerns of profit-margin deterioration at Tesla, as well as intensifying competition from low-cost carmakers in China. 

Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to the report on X , saying: "Reuters is lying (again)." 

Tesla reported first-quarter vehicle deliveries of 386,810 last quarter , well below analyst estimates and 46,561 vehicles below its first-quarter production of 433,371, representing the company's biggest-ever stockpile of vehicles, according to Bloomberg.

The company appears to be clearing that inventory buildup via aggressive price cuts on its most popular vehicle, the Model Y. As of Friday morning, some Model Y vehicle builds were marked down by about $5,000 , including the long-range and performance versions.

The price cuts on certain Model Y vehicles come just a few days after the company said it would raise the price of its Model Y by $1,000.

Weakness in first-quarter vehicle deliveries was attributed by Tesla to a temporary factory shutdown in Berlin, shipping disruptions in the Red Sea, and the early production ramp of the updated Model 3 at its California factory.

But Ryan Brinkman, a JPMorgan analyst, said weakening demand for Tesla vehicles was also likely a big contributing factor to the recent sales miss , especially amid intensifying competition from China and the growing allure of hybrid vehicles in America.

Brinkman said in a Wednesday note that the difference between vehicle production and deliveries in the first quarter "dispels the notion that 1Q deliveries were somehow supply rather than demand constrained." 

He lowered his Tesla price target to $115 and warned investors about the company's "demanding valuation."

"With 1Q24 deliveries now known to have contracted, we are highly confident both automotive and total company revenue will be negative in 1Q, likely causing even the most bullish investors to take a sentiment check," Brinkman said.

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 192 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma , the latest version of macOS that Apple released in September 2023.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.
