It is the largest European breeding ground for lions and other large predator mammals. As of 2023 [ update ] about 60 African lions , along with many tigers and other wild animals, roam over the area of over 30 hectares (70 acres; 0.3   km 2 ) of Crimean foothills by the Taigan Reservoir , and are available for public viewing. In 2006, Russian businessman Oleg Zubkov, already the owner of the Yalta zoopark "Fairy Tale", purchased real estate on the grounds of a former military institution (НИИ систем связи и управления центрального научно-производственного объединения «Каскад»). He initiated the process of acquiring the usage rights for the 35 hectares (90 acres; 0.4   km 2 ) of land around the property, but it became mired in bureaucratic hurdles aggravated by corruption and politics. As a result of the conflict, in 2015 the park was closed for visitors, but it reopened in April 2016. [2] [3] [4]

British journalist Graham Phillips visited Taigan several times, doing video reports from the park, including the "Walk with the Lions", with direct contact with large cats. [5] In 2018, there was a serious incident at Taigan, with a woman reportedly mauled by one of the lions, as she took part in the Walk with the Lions. Oleg Zubkov accused the woman of being 'drunk', however the case attracted widespread negative publicly for Taigan. [6]

Zubkov refused to apologise for the 'mauling' incident, and vowed that his safari tours, allowing patrons direct contact with big cats, would continue as before. Just a couple of months later, Taigan came to the attention of global media again, when a two-year-old lion crawled into a safari vehicle, giving the tourists cuddles, and even licking one woman in the face. [7]

Although the Taigan "Walk with the Lions" safaris initially continued, in April 2019, after a long dispute with Crimean authorities, years of negative publicity, they were finally banned. [8]

In 2019, Zubkov posted a video to his "Lion Man" YouTube channel, saying that his "2,500 lions, tigers, and bears consume 3,500 tonnes of food a day, and he couldn't afford to feed them all for much longer." Zubkov claimed his problems were caused primarily by his ongoing dispute with the Crimean authorities. He then said he was putting numerous of his animals up for adoption, and he would "have to shoot them" if homes were not found for them. Zubkov's video, and statements, attracted international attention and controversy. [9]

Zubkov was convicted of negligence by a Crimean court in July 2022, after one of his tigers bit off the finger of a 1-year-old boy in September 2021. He was given a prison sentence of two years and three months. Zubkov served three months in prison before being released on parole in October. Taigan remained open during Zubkov's detention, and as of 2023 Zubkov is currently based at Taigan as the managing director. [10]

In November 2022, during the Russian withdrawal from Kherson , Zubkov stole numerous animals from the Kherson Zoo and transported them to Taigan, including the " Raccoon of Kherson " which achieved attention on social media. [11]

Lion Taigan Park in Belogorsk

Lion Taigan Park occupies an area of 30 hectares near the city of Belogorsk . It was founded in 2012 by entrepreneur Oleg Zubkov, who previously created the Yalta Zoo . More than 60 lions and tigers from different continents live in this safari park. Here you can see rare white lions from South Africa, Bengal tigers, Amur tigers.

The landscape of the steppe Crimea is very similar to the African savanna, so the habitat conditions of African lions in Taigan Park look quite natural. The territory of the open enclosure for lions in Taigan Park reaches 20 hectares. Bridges on stilts have been built over it, where tourists can walk and observe lions in their natural habitat.

In addition to lions and tigers, there is a zoo in Taigan Park, where various animals live: giraffes, antelopes, monkeys, bison, yaks and many others. There are also many birds, including black vultures, eagles and other birds of prey.

If you come to the Taigan Lions Park on a hot summer day, it will be difficult to see the lions in the enclosure. During the day, lions usually hide from the heat in the shade of trees or fences. For animal lovers, the most interesting event in Taigan Park is the feeding of lions. This fascinating procedure takes place every day at 10 am. A lot of people always gather on the platforms, and the lions come here in whole prides. Employees of the Taigan Park throw pieces of meat to the lions directly from the platforms.

In the far part of the Taigan Park there is a Ferris wheel from which tourists can see the entire territory of the enclosure for lions, and if they are lucky, then the predators themselves wandering among the trees. There is a hotel near the entrance to Taigan Park, as well as a park area with various installations and sculptures. The hotel is built for visitors who want to watch the lions in the evening or at night. At this time, the lions come out of their hiding places, where they hide in the hot daytime and walk around the enclosure.

Visitors from many resorts of the Crimea, from Feodosia to Yalta , come to Lion Taigan Park. Excursions are arranged here even from Anapa , from the Caucasian coast. If you are interested in visiting Taigan Park, then you should definitely plan time to visit the White Rock , Suvorov Oak and Kok-Kaya Grotto. These famous natural attractions are located 12 kilometers from Taigan Park.

Safari park taigan – a paradise for animals.

On the way to the park

Crimea is a real treasure trove of attractions: antique ruins, medieval fortresses, palaces of the era of classicism – all of them were created in past centuries and eras. Our time is new buildings, modern highways, entertainment infrastructure. The Taigan Safari Park, built this century, is an exception to the rule. Hundreds of animals live here in love and satiety, representatives of the most different corners of our planet.

Taigan Safari Park Map

As early as 15 years ago, here, in the steppe near Belogorsk, there was an abandoned military unit: dilapidated barracks, tumbled down hedges and crumpled fittings. But Crimean entrepreneur Oleg Zubkov, owner and director of the Yalta Zoo Skazka, saw the potential of this place and decided to relocate here some of the animals, which, while actively breeding, could no longer fit in the limited southern coastal area of the zoo.

And in 2012, a brand new safari park, not only for Crimea, but also for the whole country, opened its doors for visitors. Dozens of animals have settled here in spacious open-air cages: giraffes and tigers, bears and black leopards, monkeys and zebras. But the main pride of the park has become a real savannah: a huge territory of more than 50 hectares, where about 70 lions freely live. At their disposal are open spaces, copses, ravines and even a lake with the purest water, where they can always get drunk. Twice a day, lions are fed fresh meat (only about 10 kg for each predator per day). Visitors can watch their life from special ramps raised five meters above the ground, which stretch over the entire savannah.

The letters that are visible from the track.

But the owner of “Taigan” (the park got its name from a reservoir located in the immediate vicinity) had a cherished dream: to have elephants in his park. Aviaries were already built long ago, but due to various circumstances, Oleg Zubkov could not carry out his plan. And so, in April 2021, the dream came true.

Probably, many Russians followed the fate of two elephants from the Kazan circus, who had a fight right during the performance, and worried about them. After all, before the future of animals that did not live up to the expectations of the trainers, it was unenviable. But Magda and Jenny were lucky – they were written off from the circus and sent to a well-deserved rest in “Taigan”, where everything was already prepared for the arrival of the artists.

Safari Park Taigan. Showdown before meals!

On May 4, 2021, the grand opening of the elephant was held in the Taigan Safari Park.

The ribbons at the entrances to the observation deck were cut by guests of honor: TV presenter and public figure Arina Sharapova, general director of the Russian State Circus Sergei Belyakov and famous elephant trainer Andrei Dementyev-Kornilov.

Elderly female elephants, having worked in the circus for over 40 years, went on a well-deserved rest. Now they have at their disposal separate rooms in an elephant house with warm floors and infrared lamps, 300 kg of fresh food every day and a huge aviary with access to a personal lake. Agree, you can only dream of such a dignified old age.

Visitors look at lions, lions look at visitors

What else to see, what to do

Today in the safari park “Taigan” you can not only observe the life of lions in natural conditions. The park offers a wide variety of services, for example, a real safari. Its participants in an electric car will be able to drive through the park and communicate with lions without fences, take pictures with them. The children’s zoo is especially fond of visitors, where there is an opportunity to pick up baby lion cubs, play with them, and take a photo.

In addition to lions living in natural conditions, there are many other animals in “Taigan”. Amur and Bengal tigers, brown and Hamalay bears, leopards, giraffes, zabras, many smaller species of animals. Also, a special Bird House was built on the territory of the park.

Everything has been done in the park to make the stay of visitors as comfortable as possible, especially for young tourists.

In addition, in the central Crimea, it has long been planned to create routes attractive for tourists. In the safari park, tourists have the opportunity to observe the habits and habits of wild animals, to see how lion cubs frolic and how adult males divide the territory. On the territory of about 30 hectares there are several prides of lions, with a total number of 58 individuals, including white lions.
