  • Build your experience. Begin your career with local competitions to build your pedigree. Get yourself conditioned for competitive races and have a feel of what your car is like on race day.
  • You can also build your own car . That said, this is an expensive venture as you’ll need all sorts of equipment and human resource to do this.

What’s the Cost of Being a Safari Rally Driver?

One of the reasons why many people don’t venture into sports like Safari Rally is its cost. Unless you have sponsors who can provide resources to you, you’ll be footing all the costs yourself. Let’s look at the budget you need to get at least started.

A licensing fee will cost you $1390, and entry fees to rallying competitions will cost you $97.30.

Purchasing a car or building one will also cost you. The former needs at least Ksh 500,000, depending on the car, and the latter, around $25,000 .

Additionally, other expenses like insurance , maintenance, and day-to-day expenditure come into place.

Wrc safari rally: ogier holds off rovanpera to claim victory in tense finish, sebastien ogier held his nerve to beat toyota team-mate kalle rovanpera to win safari rally kenya following a tense finish to the world rally championship’s most gruelling event..

Tom Howard

The eight-time world champion and co-driver Vincent Landais came under pressure from championship leader Rovanpera across Sunday’s final six stages to clinch his third win of a partial 2023 WRC campaign by 6.7s. The margin was the closest in the event’s 70-year history.

Ogier produced a faultless drive on Kenya’s challenging, rough gravel stages, assuming the rally lead from M-Sport’s Ott Tanak on Friday’s morning first test, with road opener Rovanpera in second.

The Frenchman enjoyed a near perfect Friday, winning four of the six stages, helped by an inspired call to take only one spare, instead of two, that lightened his GR Yaris. A lack of hybrid at the end of the morning loop was his only issue.

Ogier then stamped his authority on the event, extending this lead over Rovanpera to 32.0s, despite suffering a puncture, before the much anticipated rain caused chaos during Saturday’s final stage.

Rovanpera halved the deficit to 16.7s after a masterful display in extremely treacherous conditions as the Finn won the stage, while Ogier lost time to a double front puncture.

Although happy to bag strong championship points by finishing second, Rovanpera continued to push on Sunday, reducing the gap to 8.1s, before Ogier responded by winning stage 15, despite losing his rear wing and tailgate after clipping a tree.

The gap continued to fluctuate until 9.2s separated the pair ahead of the final stage, but Ogier clung on, despite a rock damaging his car, to seal victory. Rovanpera could only the muster the third fastest time on the powerstage due to a lack of power from his car, but extended his championship lead to 37 points.

Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta finished third and fourth to mirror the 1-2-3-4 Toyota scored at the event last year.

The journey for Evans and Katsuta was far from simple. Evans remained in touch with the lead two occupying third until Saturday morning when the Welshman dropped more than a minute on stage eight after his GR Yaris took on too much water in a water splash and stalled. After losing more time to a puncture, Evans also escaped a couple of scares that damaged his rear wing, before coming home in third, 2m58.5s, adrift.

Katsuta also endured an eventful rally that began with the Japanese driver rolling his GR Yaris in Wednesday’s shakedown. A broken lower suspension arm, a run in with a zebra and a clash with a tree left his car significantly damaged on Friday. But two stages wins across a much smoother Saturday and Sunday, albeit hampered by a leaking radiator on the final stage, helped him to fourth, 3m23.8s behind.

Toyota’s dominance was contrasted by reliability issues and misfortune for Hyundai and M-Sport Ford.

Dani Sordo led Hyundai’s charge to finish fifth (+5m05.4s) although his rally wasn’t helped when he became lost in his own dust on Friday prior to a power steering issue that struck on Sunday.

However, Sordo was the only i20 N to complete the 355.92 kilometres. Thierry Neuville ’s championship charge was dealt a blow when he retired from fourth on Friday due to broken front-left suspension. The Belgian rejoined the rally and recovered to finish eighth and claim the five bonus points for winning the powerstage.

Team-mate Esapekka Lappi starred at times on his Kenya debut following a double prop shaft failure that prevented him from logging time in shakedown. Lappi, who also sustained a puncture, inherited third after Evans’ stall, but a third prop shaft failure forced him into retirement on Saturday. The Finn rejoined the event on Sunday but encountered another mechanical issue.

M-Sport’s rally started brightly with Tanak winning Thursday’s Nairobi superspecial by 0.1s from Ogier. However, his rally unravelled on Friday when he was delayed by a pig and a group of zebra, before a puncture cost the Estonian more than two minutes, having already been struggling with his Ford Puma’s handling.

Unable to challenge the leading group Tanak recovered to sixth (+9m14.4s) ahead of team-mate Pierre-Louis Loubet , who lost time to a power problem, two punctures and handling issues.

The top 10 was completed by leading WRC2 runners Kajetan Kajetanowicz and Oliver Solberg .

Wrc safari rally: rovanpera stuns rivals to lead as neuville suffers puncture, toyota’s kalle rovanpera completed a stunning sweep of friday morning stages to lead safari rally kenya, while a puncture hampered world rally championship points leader thierry neuville..

Tom Howard

Two-time world champion Rovanpera, making the second start of a partial WRC campaign, managed to tame an at times ill-handling GR Yaris to open up a 15.5s lead over Hyundai’s Esapekka Lappi .

Ott Tanak headed to midday service in third [+16.8s] ahead of Toyota pair Takamoto Katsuta [+41.3s] and Elfyn Evans [+43.1s], with Neuville sixth [+48.0s] after a tyre drama. The top eight was completed by M-Sport Ford’s Adrien Fourmaux [+1m14.6s] and Gregoire Munster [+2m23.8s.].

Hot and dry conditions kicked off Friday’s leg and while the weather was stable the majority of Rally1 drivers struggled to find the balance in their cars on the rough gravel in stage two [Loldia, 191.7km].

Rovanpera was among those particularly unhappy with his car, but the Finn was able to win the stage despite a left-rear tyre coming off the rim at the stage end. The world champion emerged from the dust 0.9s faster than Hyundai’s Lappi.

“I don’t want to say any really bad words, but it was horrible,” said Rovanpera, who moved into a 1.4s overall lead over Tanak. “The car is understeering so much, I don’t understand how we can do any time on this stage. We need to improve.”

Lappi also suffered from understeer in his i20 N and was joined by team-mates Tanak and Neuville, who were also not best pleased with the handling of their cars.

“Genuinely low grip, somehow really struggling. It is very hard at the moment, the car is not working at all,” said Tanak, who was third fastest.

Overnight leader Neuville said the stage was a “reminder of how hard” the event will be, as he dropped 2.6s.

His title rival Evans found the going to be much worse as the Welshman, struggling for balance, clocked a time 11.8s adrift of the pace. The Toyota driver did however suffer a slow puncture.

Fourmaux was seventh fastest in the first of the M-Sport Ford Pumas ahead of team-mate Gregoire Munster.

The brutal nature of the Safari Rally was felt in stage three [Geothermal, 13.12km]. Championship leader Neuville clipped some loose rocks on the side of the road which resulted in a right-rear puncture.

Neuville dropped 19.9s and slipped to fifth overall, but he fared much better than WRC2 runner Oliver Solberg who was forced to change a wheel a kilometres into the test and lost 3m32s.

The stage was topped by Rovanpera despite the Finn claiming that his car’s set up remained sub-optimal. He was 1.4s faster than Lappi, extending his overall rally lead over his countryman to 3.0s.

Tanak was third fastest ahead of Katsuta and Evans, the latter still struggling with the balance of his GR Yaris.

The mighty Kedong [31.50km] stage, run in a reverse direction this year, completed the morning and it was here where Rovanpera delivered a drive that stunned his rivals.

Rovanpera produced a blistering effort through the high-speed undulating test to clock a time 11.1s faster than nearest rival Tanak. The time pushed his lead out to 15.5s over Lappi.

"This stage has been really nice every year. For sure I want to commit and even with the new notes,” said Rovanpera.

Lappi was 1.4s slower than Hyundai team-mate Tanak but there was more drama for the i20 N, driven by Neuville. The effects of the impact and resulting puncture in the previous test disabled his hybrid unit. The flailing rubber also ripped a chunk of bodywork from the right rear meaning dust was creeping into the car, enough for Neuville and co-driver Martijn Wydaeghe to don goggles.

Neuville ceded 26.3s slipping to sixth overall, 4.9s behind Evans, while Fourmaux and Munster completed the top eight having opted for cautious drives to avoid the many hazards to sit in seventh.

An under the weather Gus Greensmith emerged from the loop with a sizeable 2m20.1s WRC2 lead after main rival Solberg suffered a second puncture of the morning in stage four.

"What the hell can you do? Crazy high pressures. You take it easy in the rocky section and you still get a slow puncture. Without WRC tyres it's no fun. From now on it's flat out,” said a frustrated Solberg, who dropped to sixth in class.

The crews will tackle a second pass through the loop of stages this afternoon.

Safari Rally is such a sensational sport in Kenya.

The season attracts several rally drivers and many Kenyan enthusiasts, not forgetting the icing on the cake; the jokes on social media regarding Subaru cars and the mischief attendees engage in.

Kenya hosts Safari Rally championships every year, quite a sports phenomenon that unites Kenyans and makes them forget about their problems for a while.

If you love Safari Rallies, not just as a sport but are also willing to participate, this guide will share all the information you need as a starter in the adrenaline sport.

Don’t forget that Safari Rally is a risky sport hence the need to convince yourself that it is the right thing to do.

Learn the sport’s requirements, estimated beginner costs, Kenyan rally schools, and more.

What are the Requirements for Joining Safari Rally?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Safari Rally Kenya (@officialsafarirally)

The most accomplished rally drivers in Kenya and the world had a starting point, so the foundation matters.

Below are key pointers to building a successful Safari Rally career:

  • You need a driving license, but even without one, you can opt to train as a marshal and timekeeper, among other roles associated with Safari Rally.
  • Network with other passionate rally drivers to get first-hand insights and advice regarding the sport. A car club is a great place to start for exposure and other opportunities.
  • Enrol in a Safari Rally school for comprehensive training on rallies. Several Kenyan rally schools mentor and train aspiring drivers, such as Kenya Motorsport Federation, Abdul Sidi Rally Academy in Ngara, East African Safari Rally Ltd. in Karen and Heltz Driving School.
  • Choose a Safari Rally car among models like Toyota, Hyundai, Subaru, and Ford. Select a car that doesn’t intimidate you but one that you can easily maneuver in. You can upgrade your safari rally beginner car when it feels necessary. Choose an experienced mentor who can help you to pick a suitable car.
  • Work on your license from Kenya Motor Sport Federation, attend pre-rally events, ensure you meet safety obligations and observe other regulations, and start participating in rally competitions.

How Much Does it Cost to be a Rally Driver?

Becoming a rally driver can be costly to beginners with a limited budget.

The costs range from car expenses to licensing fees and entry fees.

You need not less than Ksh1 million to kick start your safari rally profession.

An example of a safari-compatible car you can purchase is the Subaru Impreza going between 500,000 and 800,000.

Additionally, you will need to cough out at least 200,000 as a licensing fee.

To participate in rallies, you must dig deeper into your pockets and pay Ksh. 14,000.

Your car will also need maintenance occasionally, yet another expense you should keep up with to avoid mechanical issues before or during racing.

Other expenses to consider include motor insurance, accommodation, and meals for the rally duration.

How do you qualify for and join WRC?

WRC is a global competition attracting qualified and experienced drivers from all over the world.

It takes hard work and years of practice to secure a slot at the WRC.

You must meet a set of general qualifications for eligibility to participate in the global-scale competition.

You should meet the following requirements:

  • WRC license : In addition to obtaining a license from Kenya’s relevant body, you also need another license from the universal licensing body alias Federation Internationale de Automobile. FIA issues WRC licenses to drivers with a history of participating in competitions.
  • Experience is paramount: Joining WRC as a driver with significant or measurable rallying background is easier. Take Kenyan rally tournaments seriously, as they will help you rise through the ranks and earn you a spot in WRC.
  • Have a support system : Participating in rallies, as you will come to notice, is not a one-person show. The WRC standards expect you to have a co-driver, a mechanic, and other resources to help you pull off a successful rally.
  • Register for a WRC competition: After meeting the above requirements, you can register and participate in various WRC events worldwide.

How much does it cost to enter a WRC rally?

The cost of joining WRC rallies is dependent on a few things, like the location the event is set to take place, the championship category, and the type of car used.

A WRC car may cost you more than Ksh 2 million.

Putting up a strong WRC team and considering all the costs involved (accommodation, entry fee, insurance, etc.) may amount to Ksh100 million or more.

WRC Safari Rally: Neuville edges Tanak to grab early lead

World rally championship leader thierry neuville grabbed an early safari rally kenya lead after edging hyundai team-mate ott tanak to win the opening stage..

Tom Howard

Photo by: Red Bull Content Pool

The most gruelling event on the WRC calendar began with its traditional Kasarani side-by-side super special [4.84km] in the centre of the Kenyan capital city Nairobi. Neuville came out on top with a 0.1-second margin over Tanak. Neuville took on Toyota title rival Elfyn Evans in their heat, which resulted in the former posting a time 1.7s faster than the Welshman. “It will be a challenging event. Our fingers are crossed that, this time, we get through without any technical problems or mistakes,” said Neuville. “I think we are well-prepared and I am feeling good in the car, so it’s always good to start a rally like this.” Hyundai opted to tackle the stage, which featured a couple of water splashes without a snorkel device, while Toyota and M-Sport Ford elected to fit their newly designed intake systems.

The devices were not severely tested as conditions were largely dry, barring the man-made water splashes. Neuville’s time was ultimately 0.1s faster than Tanak, who defeated M-Sport’s Adrien Fourmaux by 2.1s in their head-to-head. “The first thing in my mind is to get through without too much trouble,” said Tanak. “For sure, there will be some stress at times, and with the weather we need luck on our side.” Two-time world champion Kalle Rovanpera emerged as the best placed Toyota in third overall, 0.8s adrift of pacesetter Neuville. The Finn, making the second start of his partial campaign, was the second Rally1 car into the stage and as a result he expected his time to be eclipsed as the road cleaned with every pass. Rovanpera comfortably beat M-Sport’s Gregoire Munster in their heat.

“It’s nice to see all the fans here. It was so slippy and there was no line after the smaller cars,” said Rovanpera. “This rally is not won on the first stage anyway. It’s going to be a challenging week, but we will do our best.” Rovanpera’s team-mate Takamoto Katsuta pipped Hyundai’s Esapekka Lappi by 0.6s to sit fourth overall, while Evans slotted into sixth behind Lappi. Fourmaux ended the stage in seventh overall, 2.2s behind Neuville. Gus Greensmith was the fastest of the Rally2 runners, the British driver, kicking off his 2024 season, was 2.4s faster than Oliver Solberg . Greensmith did have the advantage of a cleaner road following a late order shuffle from organisers, which meant he ran after the Rally1 cars. Solberg clocked his time having been one of the first drivers to enter the stage. The top Rally1 and Rally2 runners were delayed in starting the stage after local driver Samman Singh Vohra rolled his Skoda Fabia. Vohra ran wide into a long, left hander which resulted in the Fabia hitting an earth mound, triggering a soft roll. Driver and co-driver were unhurt while the car suffered cosmetic damage. The crews will head north-west from Nairobi to Lake Naivasha to contest six stages on Friday.

Kalmar will lead the adventure alongside a crew of mechanics, fixers, and other highly skilled helpers. Only 14 drivers will be allowed on the trip to create a real sense of comradery. Bonds and friendships are sure to strengthen as you workshop ways to extract a 911 from soft sand or get a Cayman across a raging river, for example.

The driving itself will be as diverse as the landscape. Some days will require precise steering, while others will demand breakneck speed. Similarly, you’ll spend some time traveling in a convoy and other times solo. Each driver has to pass a short qualification test to ensure they’re up to the task.

Kalmar says guests will catch Zs in “superb accommodation,” including some of Africa’s finest lodges and villas. You’ll also have ample opportunities to experience the local cultures, cuisines, sites, and wildlife. Highlights include Victoria Falls, the local markets, and the game reserves.

“Trans-Africa 2025 will be the adventure trip of a lifetime,” Kalmar said in a statement. “It allows guests to explore new frontiers, get close to wildlife, and under the skin of the real Africa—all through the windscreen of an iconic Porsche sports car.”

The Trans-Africa adventure starts from €66,900 (roughly $71,600) plus taxes. For more information, visit the Kalmar Beyond Adventure website .

Nonprofit Raise the Barr, Dunwoody College team up to help single moms find careers

By Jeff Wagner

April 25, 2024 / 5:23 PM CDT / CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS — A new partnership in the Twin Cities is helping single moms who are struggling to make ends meet carve out a career path to change their lives.

It starts at Dunwoody College of Technology, which is now collaborating with Raise the Barr , a nonprofit with a leader who has navigated similar challenges of going to school while raising a child alone.

Together, they've created a support system ready to help moms better their family's lives.

Working with your hands, heavy machinery and emerging technologies are what lure students to Dunwoody College. It has more than 45 programs focused on technical education, putting people in career fields that right now are dominated by men.

"Unfortunately, women are underrepresented in the trades, and we want to change that and eliminate that disparity," said Bayza Weeks, Dunwoody's executive director of community partnerships.

She also helps manage the school's Women in Technical Careers (WITC) scholarship program. It helps pay for tuition (up to $10,000/year), childcare, books, along with mentoring to encourage women to enter the trades. Automotive, HVAC and construction are among the more popular routes women choose.

"Single parents face tremendous barriers to their success as unfortunately they're often the breadwinners in their families. And they also have to figure out the balance between caring for their families and pursuing their own goals and aspirations," said Weeks.

It's a challenge Lori Barr knows well. She's the mother of former Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr .

"I became a young single mom at the age of 19," she said.

She paused her college career and moved in with her parents before finishing her degree.

"Found a couple part-time jobs that were bookends to my day of going to school," she said.

Her struggle and triumph inspired her to start Raise the Barr, a nonprofit that creates a support system she didn't have.

"The data reflect that most single parents are single mothers who are also living in poverty. And so, you can imagine the challenges with having to navigate work, parenting and going to school," she said. "Something in that equation has to drop, and usually it's school because they can't afford to live and care for their family."

Raise the Barr's mission aligns with Dunwoody's WITC program. Working together appeared to be a perfect fit.

"We have a shared value to elevate women, and for this partnership to elevate single parents," said Weeks.

Together, they'll provide up to five students this fall with:

  • Rental subsidies to ensure safe and stable housing
  • Financial support expenses like childcare
  • Emergency grants up to $1,000
  • One-on-one coaching and more.

Their hope is to find women with the greatest financial need but also a desire to take a chance on themselves. Weeks was a single parent. Several women in the WITC program are parents as well. She wants prospective students to know that their struggles will be understood and hopefully alleviated with this collaboration.

"My message would be to take the first step. Come to our open house, reach out to us," said Weeks.

"If I could do it, and I didn't have this type of support, a rental subsidy, a scholarship, child care support. If I could do this, you could do this," said Barr.

Registration for WITC's fall semester ends May 15. Students who are a fit for Raise the Barr's initial cohort will be recruited the WITC program. To learn more or register, click here .
