Selous Game Reserve is an immense area of protected wilderness that has remained untouched for thousands of years, explore this park on a day trip starting from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam.

The Selous is the largest game reserve and one of the favourite game viewing areas in Africa. Covering a total area of about 54,600 km2 (21,081 sq. miles), almost 6% of Tanzania’s land surface, is amongst the largest protected wet wilderness areas in Africa, SELOUS GAME RESERVE located in the South of Tanzania and four times the size of Serengeti.

The Selous game reserve is the size of Switzerland. A large area of the reserve is drained by the Rufiji River. There are over 2,000 species of plants, over 430 species of birds, and 60 species of mammals, plenty of wildlife including Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Buffalos, Hippos, and Crocodiles.

What parks are typically visited on a 1-day trip from Zanzibar?

“With only 1 day to spend on safari, the most important thing is to try and get to the safari park as quickly as possible. This means you should really look at those packages that offer a direct flight from Zanzibar to the park in question (rather than requiring an additional flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam). This probably means that Tanzania’s Northern safari circuit will be off-limits for a day trip from Zanzibar. You’re more likely to find tours that go directly into Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) or Mikumi National Park. Even where there aren’t direct flights, the traveling time is likely to be much shorter than to most other parks on the Tanzanian mainland. Another popular possibility could be coastal Saadani National Park, although the wildlife is not quite as good as in some other Tanzanian parks.”

Is Mikumi or Nyerere (Selous) better for a 1-day safari from Zanzibar?

“Either Mikumi or Nyerere (Selous) would be an excellent choice for a 1-day safari from Zanzibar. Both have incredible wildlife possibilities, although each offers a slightly different safari experience. Mikumi is a first-rate safari experience and ranks high on my list of best Tanzanian parks for wilderness. It can sometimes even feel like a smaller version of the Serengeti, especially out on the Mkata Floodplain. And when it comes to wildlife, there’s a good chance you can see big cats, as well as elephant, giraffe, buffalo and hippo. Nyerere is also excellent, with big cats, buffalo, elephant and so much more. What Nyerere can offer that other parks can’t is the mighty Rufiji, one of Africa’s great rivers. A boat safari is a real highlight of visiting here, both for the scenery and the wildlife you might see.”

Is 1 day enough for a trip from Zanzibar?

“One day on safari is never enough, and that is particularly the case when it comes to a day trip from Zanzibar. That’s because you’ll need to factor in your travel time to get to the safari park in question, which means flying from Zanzibar to the mainland (and hopefully directly into an airstrip in the park you’ll be visiting). Another downside of only having 1 day for your safari is that you’ll spend the best time of the day traveling, rather than looking for animals. The early morning and late afternoon, when the light is best and animals are at their most active and easiest to see, would be better spent out on safari, rather than flying to get there. Despite all of this, if you only have 1 day to be on safari, then it’s sure to be a good day. In fact, I can think of no way I’d rather spend a day than going on safari. Would more time be ideal? Of course. But any time you can spend on a Tanzanian safari will be time well spent.”

Are all 1-day safaris from Zanzibar fly-in safaris?

“The only way to make a 1-day safari from Zanzibar work is to fly into the destination you’ll be visiting. Zanzibar is an island, which means you have no choice but to fly. And because you only have 1 day, you really should make the most of your time by flying directly into the national park you want to see (rather than changing planes along the way). If, for example, you decide to fly to Nyerere, the main airstrip for the park is only a very short drive from the main eastern gate into the park. This means that you will be on safari almost as soon as you get off the plane. And while you may spend a large part of your day flying to and from the mainland, just remember that the views you get to enjoy along the way could end up being a real highlight of your trip.”

How much does a 1-day trip from Zanzibar cost?

“There are lots of different tours and packages to consider when planning your day trip from Zanzibar, and prices will vary from one operator to the next. As a general rule, however, finding a cheap or affordable 1-day safari from Zanzibar will be a challenge. Because flying is so expensive, and you’ll need to fly there and back in a single day, you can expect to pay at least US$500 per person, although you could end up paying quite a lot more. There is a little less variation involved in 1-day safaris than there is for longer, multiday safaris. That’s because all of your costs (including two air transfers) will be condensed into a single day. The main cost variables will be whether you’re traveling on a group or private safari and whether you’re traveling in low or high season.”

Selous Game Reserve

You will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the airport to catch a flight to Selous. Upon arrival in Selous you will take off on the day’s action packed game drive in the Selous Game Reserve. The safari vehicle will be at the entrance gate waiting for you to arrive. This is an exclusive luxury 1-day safari tour that will take you on a 7 good hour game drive in the reserve.

This tour is designed for people who do not have a lot of time. After your safari you will drive back to the gate for your ride back to the airport and your flight back to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. This is where your safari will end.

4x4 Land Cruiser (6-7 seats) This is a specially equipped safari car with a roof opening. At crossings between parks we drive with a closed roof, when we enter the park and the safari begins, then the guide raises the roof. Selous GR (Nyerere National Park)

Off the beaten track

Selous GR (Nyerere National Park) is a little more of a hidden wonder in Tanzania, giving it even greater appeal. It’s one of the largest remaining wilderness areas in Africa, relatively undisturbed by human impact with only a small 8% of the northern region of the park dedicated to photographic tourism.

The reserve is crossed by the second biggest river in Tanzania, the Rufiji river, creating a very dynamic ecosystem. Selous is home to more than 2000 species of plants and over 350 species of birds and reptiles, boasting a wide range of wildlife from the African bush elephants, hippopotamus and lions to Cape buffaloes, Maasai giraffe, & zebra.

The vehicle is a low emission, open four-wheel drive safari jeep, perfectly suited for getting up close and personal with nature and taking unobstructed pictures.

Day 1 Flight to Selous and game drive in reserve

Morning about 4. 30am pick up from your hotel and transfer to the Airport for the flight to Selous. Depart at 6.30. After landing, change to safari cars, enter Selous and start the game drive. Short coffee break around 10.00 am. Around 12.30 pm lunch in the bush. Game drive up to 3:30 PM-4:00 PM. Safari ends and 4:30 pm and then transfer to the Camp.

Overnight: Mapumziko Lodge (safari tent fully equipped), full board.

Day 2 Boat safari and flight back to Zanzibar

Early morning after coffee /tea, about  6.15 am departure for a boat safari on the Rufiji River. The boat Safari takes 2,5 hr and then back to the camp for breakfast and relaxation. About 2 pm late lunch and then transfer to the Airstrip for your flight back to Zanzibar-departure 4.30 pm.

Crocodile itinerary: 3 days in Selous Park in southern Tanzania

Arrival in Selous + Safari by Boat

You will arrive at the Selous – Mtemere Airstrip early in the morning, by 9:30 a.m., where you will be welcomed and taken to the Selous Park , the largest park in all of Africa (Flight from Dar Es Salam or Zanzibar not included, except on request).

Arriving at the Selous Wildlife Reserve, you will begin enjoying the beautiful day of boat safari . The Selous is in fact one of the few parks in Africa where you can do a game drive in water .

You will explore the Rufiji River and some of the lakes in Selous, accompanied by a guide, with special open boats having canvas roofs. Boat safaris are the ideal way to enjoy the wonderful scenery of the Rufiji River with its many hippos, crocodiles, and multitudes of birds. Certainly not to be missed is the sunset view from the boat, in which the tranquillity of the river and the cry of the hippos around you syncs with the scenery of the sun descending below the horizon.

Packed lunch will be served at the park.

Selous Park

We continue exploring the Selous with a jeep photo safari after breakfast.

The wildlife reserve of Selous ( Selous Game Reserve ) is one of the largest wildlife parks in the world, with a total area of 54,600 square kilometres. Some wildlife typical of the savannah (such as elephants, hippos, lyacons and crocodiles) are found in the Selous in higher concentrations than any other African park.

The vast beauty of the Selous and its abundance of wildlife are exceptional, and one of the attractions of the Selous in particular is the intimacy and authenticity of a safari here, where you can go for hours without encountering any other vehicle.

We will stop at a shaded space for picnic lunch during the hottest part of the day, usually under a large tree overlooking a lake – this can sometimes be one of the highlights of the day, as it is not uncommon for animals to come and drink while you enjoy your lunch.

Then the game drive continues into the afternoon.

Dinner and overnight accommodation at the lodge.

Selous Park + Nature Walk + return by plane

We will take a nature walk after breakfast, accompanied by an armed Park Guard and our guide.

Walking safaris are a great way to get closer to nature and learn more about the smaller species and their ecosystem. You can spot giraffes, walk in the footsteps of elephants, learn to identify animal tracks and discover fascinating information about insects, trees and colourful birds. Walks are slow and last about 2-3 hours.

Lunch will be served at the camp.

You will then be taken to Dar Es Salam or Zanzibar by local flight in the afternoon (flight not included, except on request).

I was not really warm to do a SAFARI. I thought it was really expensive and I found that we should leave the animals in peace. But the price was really good, we stayed in ZOHRA CAMP, a smaller budget-friendly lodge outside the park, with small pool, campfire at night and elephants passing right by, The boat tour with sunset on the river was amazing, The hippo’s all around us playing hide and seek. The game ride was really a fantastic life-time experience. Astonishing how much we saw and how beautifull the animals are. I really enjoyed the interaction and the eye-contact you can have with them. I LOVED IT. We also enjoyed visiting the MLOKA village and Victors place, where we really had a good time, eating and drinking at realy friendly prices.

Selous Safari was a great experience! In the game drive you can see many wild animals especially the elephant families and lots of giraffs in beautiful surroundings. Crossing the river with the boat, watching the hippos, which were playing in the water and enjoying the sunset was my favourite adventure in Africa!

A walking safari in Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve needn’t all be hard work. In fact, the best safaris involve as much quiet observation and reflection as walking.

This experience is the perfect tonic to rattling around in a Land Rover and one that gradually soaks in as you immerse yourself in the wild over a period of time.

Days are spent walking in the cool of the day – gentle walks, not hikes – while the heat of the day is spent lolling in deep shade, quietly watching game including the big five.

Wildlife on show include lions, wildebeests, giraffes, zebras, hippos, black rhinos, antelopes, hyenas, African wolves, wild dogs and more.

Walking safari day-trips in Tanzania are also great for bird-spotters and visitors can also have the choice of going on both walking and Jeep safaris or a combination of the two.

When to go on a walking safari in Selous?

Walking safaris are possible in Selous throughout the year. The best time to visit the Selous (for ease of game viewing, especially whilst walking) is during the dry season, between late June and October.

July kicks off the dry season, when the deciduous trees drop their leaves and wildlife sightings become concentrated along the river and around the lakes.

Walking is superb at this time of year as the vegetation opens making for fantastic walking from camp. July is typically the coolest month but with no rainfall so long sleeves may be in order.

August welcomes the dry season in full of superb wildlife sightings, often near camp and by the river. We begin to see higher temperatures as the month goes on and this is a superb time for a night under the stars with your own private fly-camp.

The price of a walking safari package is difficult to estimate given costs can vary depending on the time of year, type of accommodation and how secluded it is, locations travelled to, activities selected and add-ons selected.

How to get to Selous?

Visitors typically fly into Selous from Dar es Salaam, landing in local Nyerere and Ruaha airstrips.

International flights into the country also arrive via Dar es Salaam (DAR) airport for visitors wondering how to get to Tanzania . DAR airport is located 18km south of Dar Es Salaam and a Tanzania visa and certain vaccinations may be required to enter the country.

Parc national de Mikumi Situé non loin des rives de l’océan Indien, le parc a été créé en 1964. Le parc national de Mikumi s’est élevé à travers plusieurs landers après avoir été déclaré parc national. Il a commencé comme une petite réserve de gibier jusqu’en 1975, lorsque davantage de terres des côtés sud et nord ont été ajoutées au parc. Actuellement, le parc est le 4ème plus grand parc national de Tanzanie, couvrant une superficie totale de 3 230 kilomètres carrés.

Attractions à parc national de mikumi

Surnommé le petit parc national du Serengeti, le parc national de Mikumi est riche d’un large éventail d’animaux sauvages. Le parc accueille un grand nombre de gros gibiers qui regroupent quatre membres de l’Afrique bi cinq seuls rhinocéros manquants. Mikumi abrite de grands troupeaux d’éléphants, de buffles, de zèbres, de gnous, d’hyènes, de léopards, de lions, d’antilopes de sable, de grands koudous et bien d’autres. Les chances de voir des lions grimpeurs dans les arbres dans le parc national de Mikumi sont plus élevées que dans la célèbre maison des lions grimpants dans les arbres qu’est le parc national du lac Manyara.

Espèces d’oiseaux

.Les oiseaux sont l’une des principales attractions du parc national de Mikumi, le parc compte plus de 400 espèces d’oiseaux avec des habitats permanents et des oiseaux migrateurs. Ce grand nombre d’oiseaux a fait du parc l’une des destinations ornithologiques du sud de la Tanzanie. Les longues listes d’oiseaux peuvent être réalisées avec des safaris patients dans le parc national de Mikumi qui durent plus de 3 jours. Cependant la taille du parc n’est pas si grande que ça mais la diversité de l’écosystème et de la végétation a attiré différentes espèces d’oiseaux. Les oiseaux les plus observés sont : l’outarde à bec noir, le secrétaire, la pintade, le pique-boeuf, l’aigle bateleur, le garde-boeuf.

Le parc national de Mikumi est situé au milieu des montagnes, ce qui fait des montagnes l’une des principales attractions du parc national de Mikumi. Les vues panoramiques sur les montagnes qui ont un système de formation unique attirent plus d’invités, en particulier des écrivains, des photographes et des chercheurs dans le parc. Les montagnes de Malundwe sont composées de trois sommets, le plus haut sommet se trouvant dans la partie sud atteignant jusqu’à 1290 mètres.
