Excellent free walking tour

We did the free tmwalking tour with james, the city is awesome and james is even better! Would definately recommend to anyone starting out in brussells

My husband and I took the chocolate tour yesterday with Tom. He was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, humorous and entertaining. The chocolates were delicious of course but Tom is what made this tour unforgettable. We would highly recommend this tour!!

Thanks to a great guide (Fraser), we had a great day in Bruges. He was entertaining and informative. Good way for a quick visit to Bruges.

Tom was our wonderful and entertaining guide for this tour. Did a really nice job keeping everyone engaged. Was attentive to any special needs on the tour and took great care to share knowledge with us. The tour provides a generous tasting of 4-5 chocolates plus a Belgian waffle! Appreciated the history of chocolate in Belgium and sampling some of the finest!

Terrific day with James Campbell leading the A team for the day in Bruges. Very well organised, thanks in part to the Belgian train network, and James ensuring everyone in the group was on the same page throughout the day. Excellent communication and insights of the history surrounding Bruges and James handled the diverse group very well. Thoroughly recommend this tour and good value for money.

Our day trip to Bruges by train from Brussels and a walking tour around the historic town was made all the more enjoyable with our tour guide James. His knowledge and enthusiasm were a delight. I would highly recommend this day tour, topped off with all the amazing Belgian chocolate.

A very positive experience today with my free walking tour. Sandemans does a very good job with their tour guides and having done this in several cities (Edinburgh, Prague, Amsterdam, Madrid, Barcelona), this is one of the best. My tour guide today was Maggie. Maggie is a Brussels native and very cheery. Clearly excited to show people her city, she was positive and outgoing. The tour lasted 2.5 hours, taking us past the highlights of the old city including the famous Mannekin Pis, the Galleries de la Reine, up the Mont des Arts and more. Only one downer in the tour, Maggie spent a good ten minutes addressing the atrocities of the Belgian Congo, a topic that she is clearly passionate about. And yes, the tour is free with the tour guide paid in tips. The solicitation was modest and not too much. Maggie also invited us to the beer tour that night which she would be running. A good time with Sandemans. I'll continue to use their tours in other European cities.

Look for the red umbrellas. Sorry, Maggie. Not a very flattering picture!

This tour is spectacular. I mean a free tour with your choice of language (English or Spanish), knowledgeable guides who are also funny and smart? How can it not be? The tour is long (over 2 hours) but you can leave whenever you want. I would say it was worth staying with and then coming back to places you want to explore more later. Our guide Peter was great. He made fun of the super touristy things (like mannekin pis) which made me want to take the tour even more. I also really liked that he was Belgian and British and could share his personal lineage and passion for Brussels with us. During the break he gave suggestions on where to eat and drink. Another thing I noticed was that he made sure he spoke on a personal level with every single person on the tour. I learned a great deal during this tour and really appreciated that I was able to go on it.

Fraser is awesome! If you have him as the guide, consider yourself lucky! I used to lived in Brussels before so while I was here, I never really examined the city through a touristy lens. Now that I am back visiting the city as a traveler (as Fraser orders traveler over tourist), I really get to re-appreciate what Brussels has to offer! Our tour was about 2 hours and 40 minutes. There was a Spanish tour going on as well. Our tour was in English and Fraser attempted AND delivered many jokes throughout the tour. I think the problem is that even though the tour was in English, not everyone in our group grew up with English as a first language. Many jokes were specific to the US or more relevant to native English speakers. Plus, Fraser spoke super fast! I don't think many people got his jokes. I nonetheless really enjoyed them! He asked us to have fun, which I did! I was especially entertained by his humor. The tour covered grand place, pissing boy, stock exchange, the galleries, the park, the royal palace, The Kunstberg or Mont des Arts, etc. It pretty much covered all the major landmarks in Brussels. You can tell that Fraser really cares about this city that he lives in. He is knowledgeable and really feels proud to live here. I've used New Europe numerous times and highly recommend this! The free walking tour is operated on tips basis so make sure you have some change (5, 10, or 20 euros per person) with you!

Maggie for President! Our tour guide Maggie (a native of Brussels) was incredible. Engaging, charismatic, funny and passionate. Everything you want in a tour guide and then some! The tour was super informative - since i used to fall asleep in history class it was great to learn so much about Belgium's history and Brussels specifically. The "free" tour (or pay at the end based on how much you liked it) concept is great. Keeps the tour guides interested and excited. Made our trip :)

This was the third city I did a Sandemans tour in, and it was one of the best. It was so good, I actually opted for two of them - the free walking tour, and the one of Bruges. For the walking tour, our guide was Laslo. He was very pleasant, outgoing, and took time to explain everything about history, culture, and gave us his personal recommendations for food, drink, and shopping. All of the tours start at the Grote Markt, and from there it's up to the tour guide to determine where to go. We ended up hitting up: Mannekin Pis, Royal Gallery, La Monnaie opera house, the gay district, the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, the Royal Gardens, King's Palace, and Mont des Arts (Hill of the Arts). It was a great way to get a feel for the geography of the town and to make plans for the following days. In the middle of the walking tour was a pit stop at Scott's Cafe-Bar, where we could use bathrooms, buy beers (and take them to go), and also purchase tickets to other Sandemans tours. That's where I bought a ticket for the Bruges tour. It also departs from Grote Markt at 9:30am, where you then take the IC to Bruges together. There are several options - round trip, one-way, or tour only. I opted for the one-way so I would have more time to hang around the town afterwards. Our group was small (only 4 people) and our guide was Senna, who was very knowledgeable about Flemish history. The tour was just as long as it needed to be, I thought. Bruges isn't that big after all, but I do recommend doing the one-way ticket and sticking around to go to the brewery and go shopping. For both tours, Spanish tours were available concurrently, which is a good option.

We happenstanced on this free walking tour in the Grand Place. Having never been to Brussels before, and since we were only in Brussels for a day trip, Hubby and I decided to join the tour to get our bearings. It did not disappoint. Our guide, Maggie, was energetic and full of knowledge. We appreciated the stops and pointers she gave along the way. The history stories were interesting. The tour was one-star short because it got into a little too much political lecture towards the end. The tour is free, but it is suggested that each person donate as much as the tour was worth usually around €5-10 per person. Would recommend to help acclimate yourself to the small town of Brussels so that you can explore the town by yourself.

Photo of Grace W.

Not bad for a free tour. I think his name was Fraser but can't remember. He was Scottish, I think. He was really funny and nice. Our group was pretty large but we still managed to hear him. Sometimes it was hard to follow because of all the city noises. If you are adults visiting the city, I highly recommend this tour. We were traveling with our toddler so it was kind of hard to follow him since they moved pretty quickly. When we got to the royal palace, we decided to end the tour because it was just too hard to keep up with a little kid. We tipped him at the end. It was well worth trying to keep up.

A fantastic tour this afternoon with Adrien for the chocolate tasting tour. He kept the tour informed and engaged the entire time. His knowledge of chocolate and its history in Belgium was impressive. We stopped at five shops on the tour and visited two of them afterwards to make purchases. Interesting to us - one of the shop employees told us that Adrien is such a knowledgeable and fun guide, that he himself took his children on the tour previously as well.

Photo of Matthew M.

Amazing walking tour! One of the best I've done. Adrien was an excellent guide and I highly recommend him to all. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the history, beer, chocolate, waffles, etc. And he had a TON of puns! Tour lasted 2.5 hours. Easy to meet up at the red umbrellas. It is free and you tip at the end, which we did generously since our tour guide was top tier. Overall I would strongly recommend!

Brussels free walking tour

My family and I went to Brussels and booked the free walking tour with Sandeman's. Our tour guide was named Simon. I have to say that I have traveled to different places in Europe and taken tours and Simon was hands down the best tour guide I have ever had. He was super knowledgeable, cultured, entertaining, interactive, funny, and efficiently took us around the city to see the main sites. He was able to answer everyone's questions and was very approachable. I wish I could take him with me all over Europe! I highly recommend the Sandeman's walking tour of Brussels. Thank you Simon for your tour and wealth of information.

We took the spanish free walking tour with Bea. She was an amazing guide!! She was fun and had lots of knowledge. Highly recommended!

We went on the walking tour with Maggie who was brilliant! Would highly recommend if you only have a short amount of time in Brussels as Maggie really packs in a lot of history, stories and humour! Thanks Maggie, you were tonnes of fun!

I enjoyed Quinten, my tour guide in Brussels. He was knowledgeable and he included humor into his tour. He was also very helpful with suggestions for food and drinks as well. What made Quinten stand out from other Sandeman tour guides that I have had in Europe was his passion for his city and his culture. He was able to use his energy and excitement for the Belgium to make us see how special a place Brussels is.

This was my first experience of a city walking tour - it certainly won't be my last! We found Simon very informative, passionate & honest about the city and its history - and his jokes weren't too terrible either! Highly recommend.

Recently my parents and I did a free walking tour with Simon, he is a great tour guide. The walking tour covered most of the places i want to bring my parents in Brussels city. He gave us lots of insider tips on where to eat after the walk, and we followed and found a superb nice restaurant along the route he suggested. By the way, my parents hardly understand English, so i translated, thus i was a bit noisy during the tour. My parents were rather old and have difficulty to walk like young people. But the group and Simon were patient with us.

Best of Brussels Free Walking Tour

We only had one night in Brussels and chose to do the free walking tour as soon as we arrived. Best decision ever as it gave a beautiful overview of the city, full of insightful and witty facts. Quinton was an excellent guide and we greatly enjoyed the tour. He was also available for questions and suggestions at the end of the tour which was helpful. This was our first free walking tour and we have no regrets and will definitely do other tours in the next cities we visit.

sandemans brussels walking tour

Had a great time with Maximilien during the walking tour. We have learnt so much more about the city than if we d open a book or go to a museum.

I know sanderman’s free tour since 2007. After dozens of tours around Europe with this company I can state that Adellin is 5 stars! Great communicator, sympathy and knowledge!

Highly recommend this walking tour! I just did the walking tour yesterday and it was fantastic! James was an awesome tour guide--very informative but also very funny! Highly recommend trying to get a tour with James! This is my third tour with Sandemans in Europe and he is by far my favorite tour guide! Even a random guy walking by stopped the tour to ask for his tour company name and his name so he could take one of his tours! The tour is free so you have nothing to lose!

This was a great tour to give you an overview of Belgian chocolates. We tasted 5 different chocolates from 5 shops followed by a Belgian waffle. Our tour guide was Peter who was fantastic, very entertaining, knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Get on his tour if you can!

My daughter and 1 decided to join the tour led by JAMES CAMPBELL. From the start he was friendly and so knowledgable about the city and the subject. The tour was fun, and his ‘ice breaker’ meant that we got to chat to other people in our group. The 5 shops got more and more delicious. He was so informative, he knew about the making of chocolate, how it became popular in Brussels and why there are still so many shops there. He explained the history of the shops and chocolates as well and he had a great rapport with the groups and the shop assistants. The chocolates and waffle we ate were Devine, each better than the last, and he also showed us where to get water on our route and where the toilets were. As we walked around the city he also told us about other things we passed such as churches and buildings and gave restaurant recommendations too. He organised the group very well and kept us together and waited for slower walkers. We also had time to go into the shops and buy things with discount too. The tour itself was quite short in distance and that means it would be great for those who find long walks hard or those with children but the information and subject covered means it was worth every penny. I would have loved to do more tours with James as he was great fun and knew his stuff, he is a great credit to the company as he made us all feel at ease, but sadly we didn’t have time.
