Different types of visas for Scotland

General visa requirements for Scotland

Scotland is very open towards expats, even after Brexit. If you're an EU/EFTA citizen, you can travel to Scotland with a valid ID or passport for an unlimited amount of time (consult our section on Travelling to Scotland). Third-country nationals will need a visa to enter and stay in Scotland, but the good news is that most different types of visa have recently been replaced by a single option, making the process much more simple.

The Standard Visitor Visa

The Standard Visitor Visa covers most cases. You can apply for it if you're a third-country national visiting Scotland (or the UK in general) on holiday, to see family and friends, to participate in events (sports- or arts-related), for business purposes or to receive private medical care. This type of visa has replaced all previous, specialised visas such as 'Family Visitor', 'General Visitor', 'Business Visitor', 'Prospective Entrepreneur', 'Sports Visitor' etc. With the Standard Visitor Visa, you can stay in Scotland for up to 6 months and partake in any business-related activities, like conferences, training seminars, events, performances (if you're an artist), research (if you're an academic), fundraising trips for startups/businesses, clinical attachments or observer posts for doctors/dentists. You can also study for up to 30 days, however, you are not allowed to work, volunteer, or get public funds.

Good to know:

While in Scotland on a Standard Visitor Visa, you are also allowed to convert your already existing civil partnership into a marriage, if you wish to do so. But you can't marry from scratch or register a new civil partnership.

Find more information on what you can and can't do with a Standard Visitor Visa here .

The Standard Visitor Visa will allow you to stay in Scotland for up to 6 months and costs 93 GBP. You can extend it to 11 months for medical treatments with a fee of 186 GBP, or if you are an academic on sabbatical and coming to Scotland for research (again, a fee od 186 GBP applies). There is also the possibility to issue a long-term Standard Visitor Visa, if you're planning on visiting Scotland frequently. The fees are 350 GBP for 2 years, 636 GBP for 5 years and 798 GBP for 10 years, but bear in mind that you're only allowed to stay in 6-month periods; then you have to leave and come back again.

The process for issuing a Standard Visitor Visa usually takes about 3 weeks, but you can apply for it up to 3 months before the date of your travel. Processing times may vary depending on the country you're applying from, so you are advised to make use of the 3-month window if you can.

To work and study in Scotland

If you plan to work in Scotland , there are various different scenarios visa-wise. If you've been sponsored by an employer or you're transferring to a different outpost of your company, you will need a Tier 2 visa . If you are a temporary worker, then Tier 5 visa is the best fit for you . If you're coming to Scotland as an au pair, then the process may differ depending on which country you're coming from ' enter your country of origin to the Immigration official website to find out more . If you want to study in Scotland, you usually need a Tier 4 visa .

For all other cases, such as to live with a family member who is already in Scotland, to get a UK ancestry visa, to set up or run your own business or to prove you have the 'right of abode' in Scotland, you should use the Visa4UK service .

Do you need to test for tuberculosis?

To stay in Scotland for more than 6 months, you may need to test for tuberculosis if you're a national of some specific countries. If that is the case, you will have to do an x-ray, or even be asked to give a sputum sample. If your results are clear, you will be given a certificate of health that is valid for 6 months ' you should include this certificate with your visa application.

Find out more about the countries whose nationals need to be tested for TB, here .

How to get a UK Tourist visa from UAE: Step-by-step guide

How to get a UK Tourist visa from UAE

Who would not be eager to explore the marvels of the United Kingdom and spend a vacation ravishing oneself with its magnificence? Who would hesitate to enrich themselves with the breathtaking greatness of Stonehenge, the awe-inspiring grandeur of Windsor Castle, the historic splendidness of the British Museum, the monumental glory of Buckingham Palace, or the iconic beauty of Tower Bridge, not to mention the numerous other exquisite places to experience?

But without proper guidance, the process of acquiring a visa and other necessary travel documents can be a huge turn-off for any traveller. The Visa Guy is here to make travel easy for everyone, and here is our simple step-by-step guide to getting a UK tourist visa from the UAE.

Table of Contents

How to Get a UK Tourist Visa from UAE

The application process for a UK tourist visa mainly involves an online application form and an appointment at a visa application centre. First, you have to choose from the pool of different types of UK visas and determine the kind of visa that suits your requirement as a tourist from UAE. The following step-by-step guidelines shall help you navigate the process of getting a UK tourist visa from start to end.

1. Determine Your Required Visa Type

Different types of uk visas.

There are numerous types of UK visas depending on your nationality, purpose of visit, duration of stay, and personal circumstances and skills. There are standard visitor visas, work visas, student visas, marriage visitor visas, family visas, ancestry visas etc. However, there are three possible visa options for a tourist to consider and determine the suitable one.

– Visa Not Required

The first thing to determine is whether you need a visa to enter the UK. Depending on your nationality, as per your passport, you might not require a visa at all. For example, if you are a Canadian national residing in the UAE, you are exempted from the visa requirement to travel to the UK for a stay shorter than 6 months. Similarly, citizens of the USA, EU member states, and certain commonwealth countries do not need a visa to stay in the UK for no longer than 6 months.

You can check whether you require a visa to enter the UK here .

– Electronic Visa Waiver

Instead of a Standard Visitor Visa, nationals of some middle-eastern countries, including the UAE, have the option to enter the UK with an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) . The UK Electronic Visa Waiver, a digital alternative to regular visitor visas, can be availed by the nationals of the following countries if their stay is no longer than six months for tourism, business, study, or medical treatment:

  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates

If you are a national of one of the six countries mentioned above and residing in UAE, the easiest option is to go for an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW).

– Standard Visitor Visa

Suppose you belong neither to any nationalities exempted from the UK visa requirement nor to the nationalities that can avail of an Electronic Visa Waiver. In that case, you must get a Standard Visitor Visa to travel to the UK as a tourist. Those eligible for an Electronic Visa Waiver can also get a UK Standard Visitor Visa. You can usually stay up to 6 months in the UK with a standard visitor visa. However, in certain circumstances like academics and medical treatment, you might be permitted to stay longer than six months.

To get a UK Standard Visitor Visa, you must apply online and attend an appointment at a visa application centre before you travel to the UK. Suppose you plan to visit the UK as a tourist regularly. In that case, you may opt for the long-term standard visitor visa, which will help you avoid the visa application process each time you travel, although the maximum stay per visit would remain 6 months.

The earliest you can apply for a visitor visa is three months before your journey. You should begin your visa application process as soon as possible to relax and prepare for your travel comfortably.

2. Gather the Required Documents

You must keep the following documents ready for a seamless visa application process. Check the documents required for a UK tourist visa from UAE.

List of Required Documents

1. Passport

Your passport must be valid during the entire course of your ijju stay in the UK. It must also have at least one page blank for your Standard Visitor Visa.

4. Proof of Travel History

  • Ensure your face is properly visible without any hair falling across the eye.
  • Ensure that your fingertips do not have any cuts or abrasions- this may affect the scan.
  • Children below the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult (18+)
  • You can use the Document Scanning Assistance Service at the Visa Application Centre to upload the supporting documents for the appointment.

Priority Visa Service- for Getting Faster Decision on your Application.

You might be able to get a faster decision on your visa application by opting for the priority visa service . Depending on the availability of the service in each Visa Application Centre, you can get a faster decision by paying a service charge for the same.

6. Waiting for the Visa Decision

The waiting begins once you have completed your appointment and provided your biometric information. The waiting time ends when you get a mail consisting of the visa decision. Meanwhile, you can track your application to get updates about its progress.

Usual Processing Times for UK visitor visas

Normally you should get your visa decision within 3 weeks after you attend the appointment at the Visa Application Centre. However, as mentioned earlier, you can make a faster decision using the priority services. The ‘Priority Visa’ option will give you a decision within 5-7 working days, whereas the ‘Super Priority Visa’ will give you a decision by the next working day.

Acceptance or Refusal of Application

The result of your visa application shall be conveyed to you by email or a letter. The letter or email will describe what to do next. If you do not receive any mail even after enough time, check the spam or junk folders of your email.

What to do if your application is approved.

If your Visa Application Centre has collected your passport, they will return it with a sticker (vignette) once your application is approved. If you keep your passport, you have to take your passport to the Visa Application Centre to get the vignette in the passport. The vignette will show the visa type you have been granted, the validity dates, and the visa conditions. If you encounter any error in your vignette, contact your Visa Application centre and get it corrected as soon as possible.

What to do if your application is denied.

If your Visa application is refused, you will receive an email or a letter explaining the denial. If the Visa Application Centre keeps your passport, it will be returned to you. The letter will mention if you can appeal the rejection decision.

Humza Yousaf: Scotland’s short-lived leader

World europe.

Politics can be a brutal business, Glasgow-born Yousaf says

EDINBURGH: Humza Yousaf always faced an uphill battle to revive his beleaguered Scottish National Party’s fortunes and its quest for independence but few thought he would last little more than a year as Scotland’s leader.

The 39-year-old, who announced on Monday he was resigning as first minister, quit before facing probably terminal no-confidence votes in both his leadership and government.

Get exclusive content with Gulf News WhatsApp channel

It continues a turbulent period for the SNP following the long and largely successful tenure of Yousaf’s predecessor and close ally Nicola Sturgeon, whose own resignation in March 2023 handed him a poisoned chalice.

The first Muslim head of a major UK political party, and Scotland’s youngest ever elected leader, he was deprived of a political honeymoon by an SNP funding scandal and a challenging domestic picture.

  • Scotland sees record number of unique baby names
  • Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf, the first Muslim leader of a major UK political party, quits after a year
  • Why new Scotland hate crime law has sparked controversy

The funding scandal saw police arrest and interview Sturgeon last year and recently charge her husband Peter Murrell, a former SNP chief executive, with embezzling party funds.

However, Yousaf’s downfall was ultimately prompted by his ill-judged decision last week to end power sharing with the Scotland’s Green Party, amid policy disagreements over climate and other areas.

The move dramatically backfired after Green MSPs (members of the Scottish parliament) joined opposition parties in moving to oust him, leaving Yousaf with no choice but to resign.

‘Brutal business’

“Politics can be a brutal business,” a tearful Yousaf said on Monday, after reflecting on the historic nature of his period in power.

“I could never have dreamt that one day, I would have the privilege of leading my country.

“People who looked like me were not in positions of political influence, let alone leading governments, when I was younger.”

Glasgow-born Yousaf, whose paternal grandparents and father emigrated to Scotland from Pakistan in the 1960s, had been hailed as a polished communicator who could unite the increasingly fractured SNP.

He took charge in March 2023, after winning an internal SNP leadership battle, as support flagged for the SNP’s central policy - independence for Scotland from the rest of the United Kingdom.

Despite UK government opposition to another referendum a decade after an independence vote in 2014, he vowed on taking office to deliver it in this generation.

But independence has since taken a backseat during Yousaf’s rocky 13-month tenure, and party scandals and policy squabbles have dominated.

With the issue increasingly receding from day-to-day politics, his SNP now looks vulnerable to the main opposition Labour party in a UK general election set for later this year.

It could also lose a possible election for the Scottish parliament, leaving Yousaf with a unenviable legacy.

Succeeding Sturgeon after her eight years in charge, he had insisted that his experience hailing from an ethnic minority meant he would fight to protect all minorities’ rights.

However, liberal SNP policies on transgender rights caused him a political headache throughout, including among more conservative elements of the SNP.

Meanwhile crises in healthcare and education, marring the SNP’s record after nearly two decades in power, have also weighed on his popularity.

Gaza war critic

Yousaf forged his political career after growing up in Scotland’s biggest city, Glasgow.

His father had enjoyed a successful career there as an accountant.

His mother was born into a South Asian family in Kenya.

He attended an exclusive private school in the city, two years behind Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar.

From there, he went on to study politics at Glasgow University and worked in a call centre before becoming an aide to Alex Salmond, Sturgeon’s predecessor as leader and first minister.

Yousaf entered the Scottish cabinet in 2012, serving in various ministerial roles including justice, transport and health.

He married former SNP worker Gail Lythgoe in 2010 but they divorced seven years later.

He remarried in 2019, and has a daughter and a step-daughter.

Yousaf’s international profile has risen in recent months due to his vehement criticism of Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza, where his second wife Nadia Al Nakla’s parents were trapped for weeks.

He described the period as being the most difficult of his life.

United Arab Emirates

Entry requirements.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you contact the UAE Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering UAE.

Passport validity requirements

To enter the UAE, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive in the UAE.

If you have a residence permit, your passport’s expiry date must be at least 3 months after the date you arrive in the UAE.

If you’re travelling through the UAE and not passing through immigration, your passport must have an expiry date at least 3 months after the date you will transit.

Visa requirements

You can get a visitor or tourist visa issued free of charge when you arrive in the UAE. You do not need to apply in advance of travel. Your passport will be stamped with the visa as you go through immigration. It will be valid for up to 40 days.

You can be fined for overstaying your visa. If you want to extend your stay, contact:

  • for Dubai: General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs
  • for the rest of the UAE: Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship

Living and working in the UAE

If you have entered Dubai on a visit visa and want to start working, you must get a probationary work permit valid for up to 3 months from the Ministry of Labour. If you are caught working on a visit visa, you could get a fine or a prison sentence, and you risk deportation.

You risk arrest if you have lived or worked in the UAE and return when:

  • your previous visa is not in order - for example if you did not cancel your work visa
  • you have outstanding debts
  • you have an unresolved legal issue

If you have any doubt about your status before returning to the UAE seek advice from a local lawyer .

If you have any questions on the validity or expiry of your visa, or on how to work or stay in the UAE, contact UAE Immigration directly:

  • for Dubai: General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs
  • from the UK: UAE Embassy in the UK

Residence visas

If you apply for a residence visa, you will have to take a blood test. If you test positive for any communicable diseases like HIV, hepatitis or tuberculosis, you may be detained and then deported, without appeal. Check the health and fitness requirements on the  United Arab Emirates’ government portal .

When applying for a UAE residence visa, it is common practice for your sponsor’s representative to give their details as the contact information on your application. When your residence visa is issued, update these details using ICP Smart System services . These details are used by the local authorities when they contact you.

Previous travel to Israel

UAE immigration authorities have advised that British nationals with valid or expired Israeli visas or stamps in their passports should not face any difficulties entering the UAE as long as they do not intend to work. If you do intend to work, further checks may be required and there is a risk that entry may be refused.

If you are a British-Israeli dual national and have any concerns about entering the UAE, contact the UAE Embassy in the UK .

Leaving the UAE

If you are subject to a travel ban, involved in legal proceedings, have unpaid debt or are a child subject to a custody dispute, you may be prevented from leaving the UAE.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need on TravelHealthPro .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of UAE . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

It is illegal to bring pork products or pornography into the UAE. Videos, books, and magazines may be subject to scrutiny and may be censored.

Medication

There are strict rules about what medications can be brought into the UAE. You will need approval from the UAE authorities to bring in medication that the UAE classes as narcotic, psychotropic, controlled or semi-controlled.

You must request approval in advance to bring in medication. Apply online using the electronic application form on the UAE Ministry of Health website. The UAE authorities advise that applications are normally processed within 5 working days.

If you arrive in the UAE without evidence of prior approval, the medication will not be allowed into the UAE and you may be prosecuted. For information on controlled medicines or the process for obtaining permission, contact the UAE Ministry of Health on [email protected] or call +971 800 11111.

In all cases, there are limits on the amount of medication that can be brought into the UAE legally. The Ministry of Health advise you can bring up to 3 months’ supply of medication as a visitor, reduced to one month’s supply if the medication is included in the list requiring approval.

You do not need to complete this approval process if you are only transiting airside through a UAE airport and will not pass through UAE immigration to enter the UAE.

Are you a student who recently graduated from the UAE and is looking to sponsor your visa based on your academics? The Golden Visa issued by UAE is a long-term, renewable residence visa that enables you to stay in the country for a duration of 5 or 10 years, depending on the application category.

Students or graduates who excel in academics can apply for this visa. Khaleej Times spoke to an Amer agent to outline the application process for applicants in the UAE.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Am I eligible?

Applicants must apply for the Golden visa within the same emirate where their current visa was issued.

University graduates

Outstanding graduates of universities in the UAE

According to the UAE’s government portal, students of universities in the UAE may be granted a Golden visa for a period of 10 years, if:

  • It has not been more than 2 years since graduation
  • The university must be rated either A or B class by Ministry of Education
  • A recommendation letter from the university or an accredited graduation certificate or an accredited academic record stating that the student’s cumulative GPA (CGPA) is no less than 3.5 for class A universities and no less than 3.8 for class B universities is submitted.

Outstanding graduates of foreign universities

According to the UAE’s government portal, students in foreign universities may be granted a Golden visa for a period of 10 years, if:

  • Graduation certificate is accredited by the Ministry of Education
  • The university is rated among the best 100 universities global according to the rating system recognized by Ministry of Education
  • The student’s cumulative GPA is not less than 3.5

High school students

High school students are eligible for a Golden Visa of 5 years, if:

  • The student is a national-level topper (with a minimum grade of 95 per cent in public or private secondary school)
  • A recommendation letter from Ministry of Education (Emirates Schools Establishment) is submitted.

The Golden Visa is for a duration of 5 years, but may be extended if the student is enrolled in one of the majors or colleges in the country that requires a study period of more than 5 years.

How do I know if my university is rated A or B?

To know the university's classification, the applicant can access the university website, or contact their admin department.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, a Technical Support Specialist at Amer247 messaging platform said:

However, for applications through Amer, the classification is "specifically contingent upon the governing authority under which the educational institution" is based.

This classification can significantly influence the documents required.

The support specialist added: "Notably, for outstanding university students under KHDA, the school must liaise with KHDA for certificate attestation, followed by MOFA attestation, and the issuance of an equivalency certificate to conform with the mandatory Ministerial grading system, typically graded out of 4 or 5."

How do I apply?

Students can expect a faster process if they first receive ICP nomination approval and then visit an Amer centre. According to the Amer agent, the application process can indeed be "expedited and made more efficient" if the student obtains a UAE ICP nomination approval prior to visiting Amer, or utilises the GDRFA platform.

The agent said that the GPA threshold is set at 3.8 to "facilitate a seamless application process." However, certain universities in the UAE are categorized by ICP as exempt from the 3.8 benchmark.

Graduates from these universities can apply for the Golden visa with a GPA of 3.5 if they secure a nomination from ICP, he added.

To apply for a Golden Visa in Dubai, visit icp.com

  • On the homepage, stay logged out. Scroll until you see the left side menu, and click on “Golden Visa” under Services.
  • Click on “start service” under “high school students/college students”
  • Then, go to “Visa – Golden Residence – Nomination Request for Golden Residence – New Request” and click on “Start Service”
  • Fill in the application form, attach the required documents and pay the application fees.
  • Once you receive ICP approval for the nomination request, take a screenshot of the approval email and head to your nearest Amer service centre, with the required documents. Alternatively, you can apply through the GDRFA website, smart application or Customer Happiness Centres.

According to Amer's technical support specialist, students holding the Golden Visa can "extend the visa to their parents, spouses, and children without any prejudice."

Perhaps you already live in this gorgeous city and want to share it with family and friends, but aren’t sure how to go about securing the ever-important visa. For some it’s as easy as showing up at the airport, for others, there is a process that needs to be followed.

Here is everything you need to know about getting a tourist visa for Dubai.

No visa required

Citizens of the GCC areas do not require any sort of visa to enter Dubai. You simply need to provide your passport or your national ID at the point of entry and you will be granted entrance.

Visa on arrival

If you fall into this category, you’re in luck because there are certain countries that can simply arrive at Dubai International Airport and receive a tourist visa, on arrival.

There are a total of 50 countries that receive visas on arrival. Some include The United Kingdom (UK), The United States of America (USA), and countries that are part of the EU. For some countries you will be eligible for a 30-day visa, and for others a 90-day visa, with the possibility of extension.

Indian citizens who are holders of tourist visas from the USA, green cards, or have a residence visa in the UK or EU will also receive a visa on arrival, for 14 days, provided that the green card and residence visas have been valid for more than six months.

If you are a Mexican passport holder, you will be granted a multiple-entry visa on arrival. Your visa is valid for up to 180 days and is valid for six months from the date that the visa has been issued.

The list of countries that are able to attain a tourist visa on arrival in Dubai or the UAE may change from time to time and so you can easily see if you are eligible for a tourist visa on arrival by following the steps here .

Pre-arranged visa

When you do not fall under the above categories that means you need to apply for a tourist visa before you enter Dubai. This can be done in a number of ways.

You can easily apply directly through certain airlines including FlyDubai and Emirates . Alternatively, you can organise a tourist visa through licensed travel agents, tour operators and the hotel you will be staying at.

It is important to note that you cannot apply for a tourist visa through the UAE Embassy, one of the organisers mentioned above will apply for your visa on your behalf through the visa-issuing authorities here in Dubai.
