Skandagiri Hills

By Meenakshi Gupta Also known as Kalavara Durga, Skandagiri hills famous for their gorgeous sunrise and sunset views hold historical significance as the ruins of the 18th century Tipu Sultan fort can be seen at the top. Trek up the hills for a mesmerising sunrise over the floating clouds or trek during the day and witness the breathtaking sunset. A moderate to challenging level trek is quite popular amongst aspiring trekkers and seasoned as well. The night trek to view the sunrise is something that one is looking for that adrenaline rush. Crossing the treacherous trails, steep inclines, and rocky boulders will give you an experience of a lifetime.

Skandagiri Hills

Skandagiri is one of the most sought treks around Bangalore for its spectacular misty views and the clouds over the hills. The night trek is a dream come true for trekkers, and nature lovers and is a paradise for photographers. Climb up the hills through the wilderness and lush green dense forest to reach the top of the hills. Skandagiri stands tall at a height of approximately 1350 mts overlooking Nandi hills and Muddenahalli. Trekker’s paradise and a delight for nature lovers, Skandagiri takes about 6-8 hours to complete the 8 km trek distance. The ruins of the fort and a Shiva Temple on the top of the hills will leave you awestruck. Just 70 km away from Bangalore, Skandagiri is famous for its sunrise views and hence the night trek. The picture-perfect sunrise views after the strenuous trek are worth the effort.

Kalavara Durga

The main fortress of Skandagiri historically is known as Kalwarbetta or Kalavara Durga and holds immense importance in the historical past. Built by Tipu Sultan, the fortress has been abandoned since 1791 after he lost the Anglo-Mysore war. However, the beauty and charm of the place have increased over time even more. This is what makes the trek, the most popular sunrise trek near Bangalore. One needs to take permission from the forest department and the trek can be booked online at Karnataka Eco-tourism.

Kalwarbetta (Skandagiri), 68 Kms from Bangalore is one the hill forts amongst the Nandi Hill ranges. The dilapidated walls of Tipu's fort can be found today on steep Kalwarbetta (Skandagiri), near the village of Kalwara. History says this was a small but strong hill fort. It surrendered to British troops on 19 October 1791. It remained in British hands until the peace treaty of 1792, which concluded of the third Anglo-Mysore war.

This is a tedious trek as the hill is precipitous and high. The trek starts from the Papagni Temple at the foothills of Kalwara village. The fortress of Kalwarbetta is in full sight throughout the walk uphill. This steep and fantastic trek through a maze of dense shrub is highly intriguing. Kalwarbetta is a teaser. Just as you reach the fort wall contended that you have topped the hill, you see another ring of fort. No sooner you reach there; you will find another majestic fort wall waiting to be conquered. There are six such series of stonewalls protecting an abandoned temple on the hilltop.  There are 2 caves, one starts from the base and as per locals, leads to the temple at peak and another one is somewhere midway which is about 30 feet only. Both are yet unexplored, especially the first one. Local say that there are pythons in the caves and had galloped their goats at times. Supposedly, there are 6 Samadhi in that cave.

Situated just 70 km from the city, this trek offers a refreshing break from the urban chaos, allowing you to bask in the region’s natural beauty. Opt for the night trek to enjoy the enchanting experience of panoramic views under a starlit sky and a captivating sunrise.

The 8 km trail takes you through rugged terrain, past six concentric fortification walls, and up to the summit at 4429 feet above sea level. While the hike isn’t too challenging, be cautious with slippery grass and bushes, especially during the night. It’s best to avoid the Skandagiri night trek during the monsoon season. For a hassle-free trip, consider using shared transfers from Bangalore.

Beautiful Sunrise View From Skandagiri Hills

Skandagiri is also known as Kalavara Durga. It is an ancient mountain fortress located in Karnataka, and offers a serene environment away from the city. The day-long hike starts at Papagni Mutt and leads to the historic fort ruins dating back to the 18th century. Best places to visit near skandagiri trek.

There’s a majestic rock formation overlooking Nandi Giri which has been admired by renowned personalities like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sir M. Visveswaraya during British Rule. As a traveler, I loved the unique trail that offered a delightful mix of rocks, boulders, and mud, surrounded by thick vegetation. It’s amazing to find such a trek so close to the city!

As you get closer to the summit, you’ll be captivated by the dilapidated fort walls, carved pillars, and stones that transport you back to the 18th century when Skandagiri Fort was alive with grandeur. Reaching the summit, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the intact Shiva Temple, still worshipped by devotees who climb all the way up. It’s a rare sight for a fort with surrounding ruins.

The summit rewards you with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, forests, villages, and even Chikballapur town. After completing the Skandagiri Trek, you can explore nearby attractions like Nandi Hill, Muddenahalli (birthplace of Sir M. Visvesvaraya), and Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple, an ancient Hindu temple complex with intricately carved pillars and a reflecting pool. Trust me, this adventure is one you won’t want to miss!

Amazing View from top of Skandagiri Hills Trek

What is the best time to visit Skandagiri Trek

The best time to hike Skandagiri is from September to February, when the weather is more pleasant and the views are at their peak.

Skandagiri is a fantastic trek that can be enjoyed throughout most of the year. If you’re hiking during the summer, don’t forget to wear a cap to avoid dehydration from the sun’s heat.

For monsoon treks, bring a poncho, raincoat, and backpack rain cover to stay dry, but be cautious during heavy rain, as the trail can become slippery and challenging due to loose rocks and mud.

Although trekking between February and May is possible, the scenery may not be as breathtaking as in winter. Monsoon season is generally not recommended, as South India’s long rainy periods make the trail slippery and increase the risk of injury.

Trust me, trekking Skandagiri during the right season is an experience you won’t want to miss!

How to reach the starting point of the trek?

Reaching the Skandagiri Trek base location is a breeze, even if you haven’t selected transfers.

By Air: From Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru, it’s just a 50-minute drive (43.7 km)

By Train: From Nandi Halt railway station, it’s a mere 25-minute drive (16.9 km).

By Bus: You can hop on a bus from Majestic Bus Station, Bengaluru, as there are buses running every 10 minutes to Chikballapur and vice versa.

The Difficulty level of the Skandagiri Trek

Skandagiri is an accessible trek for most adventurers, with no sections that are particularly difficult. However, it’s essential to be prepared for various trail conditions and exercise caution throughout the trek. During the monsoons, the trail can become slippery, making proper footwear crucial and checking weather forecasts to avoid heavy rain days advisable.

While scaling small rocks or walking on large stone slabs can be an enjoyable part of the trek, be careful not to slip or fall, as it could result in injuries. Additionally, some sections of the trail consist predominantly of muddy terrain, which can be slippery even without rain. Ensure you maintain firm footing in these areas to avoid slipping and sliding down the trail. With the right preparation and caution, you’ll have an incredible and safe time exploring the Skandagiri trek!

They take in as many bookings as possible - around 50 people were trekking kudremukh alone. 2 washrooms were given for 2 different trek groups (nearly 50 each) - in the morning to freshen up. Ideally the trek should have started at 7 to 8am. But we started at 11am - in peak sun. And the worst part was we cannot trek beyond 1pm (as per forest rules). Reasons for delay ? - one trek leader for all 50 people! Seriously! (In website they claim 1 trek leader for every 15 people). - even if you are ready, you need to wait for all 50 to join you (with 2 washrooms available) - no Jeep came even after everyone was ready too! The whole purpose of trek went for a toss. Nobody went to the top as it's a 4hr trek and we weren't allowed beyond 1pm. Unless you can run to the top in 2 to 3 hrs, but what's the point again if you cannot experience the trek and stay at the top for a few hours ? This company is totally messed up !! Food was average. Stay was pathetic! Read more Written January 28, 2024
  • kaarthikraajr 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor Namma trip website does not give provision to cancel or make alterations once paid. They furnish few contact numbers which when we attempt to call will mostly be not picked. There is absolutely no contact from nammatrip after payment and you get a call only on the day of the trip which is ridiculous. I found it really irritating when we dont have provision to cancel due to emergency or reschedule. Finally a day before the trip, one guy replied to whatsapp message and routed me to another guy and then he routed me to some other guy. Then they finally mentioned they cannot cancel as it has to be done before 15 days. This i found it stupid. They allow us to book 10 days before the trip and they say we cannot within 15 days prior to the trip.Overall they dont even refund any part of money and i ended up losing 5500 for nothing. Overall a very bad experience. Wont recommend this organisers. Read more Written January 19, 2024

Don't ever do a Namma trip. Bus was very uncomfortable and also they used to park the bus almost 3-4kms away from any view point. The itinerary itself is very poorly planned and executed, nonsense treks, long sitting hours in the bus, always making you rush. Basically you don't have any control over your trip, making it a compulsory suffering. Read more Written January 1, 2024
  • Navigator28425745349 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Kumara Parvatha failure I was supposed to join Kumara Parvatha Trek (1 night in tents), however, I couldn’t be due to health emergency. I paid an advance of 1000Rs. I explained the situation to the lady at 9035412999 and she gave me the solution of joining the next upcoming trek to the same destination. She was supposed to give me the call with all the details. The next day I could only reach out to a different interlocutor at 9632881298 and re-explained the situation. The person, very helpful, proposed the same solution and needed to discuss it within the team, which is normal. I really wanted to complete this trek with this Namma Trip as it was not the first time, I travelled with them (I participated in a few office trips organized by them). Moreover, I highlighted to the last agent that I will pay the due amount and all the additional fees incurred because of my cancellation - he mentioned the food and forest department. I also added that I will bring some friends with me for the next Kumara Parvatha trek that I will join. However, on the same day, during the night hours, a different agent called me from the number 9035418999. He asked for immediate payment as if I wanted to run off without paying the due amount. I asked him to wait till the next morning as I was not able to make online payments and it was quite late (midnight) to ask my friends for the same. He insisted that he wanted the payment to be made right away. Without explaining to him that I was already in touch with 2 of his colleagues, I paid the due amount of 1950Rs. I just wanted to highlight that because of the harassment of that last agent, Namma Trip got their 1950 rupees at midnight on Diwali day but lost more than one customer... • Maps54540549127 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Irresponsible and careless Coordinators Hi All, wish the organisers don't ditch you like they did towards my friend and me. We booked for Kunthibetta recently and nobody informed us that the trip was cancelled, until we reached the pickup location at midnight. Apparently they cancelled because of less booking count. After reaching the pickup point-Kalamandir too, they refused to answer our questions properly and were extremely rude to us over WhatsApp. Special mention about Ms. Anusha who cut our calls while we were clueless as to what to do in the middle of the night. There was No communication of what to do next. Just rude messages asking us to contact Bookmyshow directly to cancel. and mind you, the option to book tickets through bookmyshow is not synced with the actual events, and they take zero responsibility of external bookings. Even when we tried to change our trek to Anthargange, they were not willing to share details properly until extra money was paid. Note to all the travellers, be careful. If they can do this to 2 ladies who were stranded at midnight, desperately trying to get some information from Nammatrip, they will be senseless to do it to anyone. Wrong on our part for trusting nammatrip. On top of that they send substandard messages as response to reviews on social media. Read more Written September 16, 2023

skandagiri trek price

Skandagiri hills, also known as the Kalavara Durga is a mountain fortress located at a distance of 62 km from Bangalore at Chikkaballapura, Karnataka. Most popular for its night trek, Skandagiri is best climbed in the calm of the night to witness one of the best sunrises of your life. It stands at an elevation of 4757 feet above sea level and offers a great chance to stargaze before sunrise. Skandagiri is one of the top places to visit from Bangalore and for a weekend trip from Bangalore.

How to reach Skandagiri Hills?

Since it is located at just 62 km from Bangalore, visitors can drive to the Skandagiri base. Many travel agencies offer Skandagiri Hills Night Trek/Sunrise Trek packages and also provide pickup and drop as well. The nearest railway station and airport are both located in Bangalore. You may also avail buses from the Majestic Bus station to Chikkaballapura, and take an auto-rickshaw to the Papagni Temple. Paid parking is available at the base camp.

Skandagiri Hills Night Trek

The trek to Skandagiri hilltop is around 4 km and takes around 3 hours to reach. It starts at the Papagni Temple near the Kalavara village. The Skandagiri Hill trek up is a bit tricky as there is no well laid out trail and one must step over huge rocks and boulders to move ahead. The area is quite dry and dusty and there are shrubby vegetation along the way. If you opt for the night trek which usually starts at around 3:15 am, it will be a good idea to carry flashlights as the entire trail will be dark. Camping options are also available with many travel agencies and it is a great experience.

Sign Board towards Skandagiri Trek trail

Usually there will be at least 2-3 guides with each group. They will guide you through the path and make sure everyone stays with the group as there are many instances of wild animals like tigers showing up. The last phase of the Skandagiri Hills trek is a bit steeper than the others and you must be careful while climbing up as the rocks tend to be loose and slippery. You get a beautiful view of Chikkaballapura from here. The Skandagiri Hills trek is very similar to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery Trek in Bhutan compared to the difficulty level and the beautiful views from the top.

Skandagiri Sunrise

Once at the top, you will have to find a good spot for yourself to see the sunrise. Since each group may have close to 20-25 people, it will be crowded and you may not find a good spot. It is extremely windy and cold at the top so make sure to wear jackets and cover your ears. The guides will know the exact time of sunrise. It will be a good idea to use your mobile phone compass to find the direction of the sunrise. You will be able to witness the sky changing colors during the sunrise and it is a wonderful sight to behold. It gets quite sunny after the sunrise, and the view from the hilltop is mesmerizing.

Skandagiri Temple

Once the sunrise, you can explore the hilltop. There are ruins of the Skandagiri temple dedicated to Lord Siva here and it is a regular photo spot for trekkers. Even though at a crumbled state, it a treat to behold after the rigorous climb.

Tipu Sultan Fort

Built by Tippu Sultan, the ruins of this fort clearly indicate that the fort was once an elaborate structure. Though only a few walls remain standing, it adds to the mysterious aura of the place. Exploring these ruins deeper reveals the presence of two caves and 6 samadhis inside the structure.

Back to base camp

The trek back down is the same way, even though it may feel like an entirely new place in the sunlight. The drop is quite steep and it might feel more difficult to descent than it was to climb. Take care on each step as you may easily slip down the rocks. The endpoint will be where you began the trek, the Papagni Temple. Note that the guides may not accompany you on the way back. Most travel agents provide pick up and drop, so you will be given time to meet up at the starting point.

More automakers are offering steep discounts on electric vehicle models. Kia and Genesis are two of the latest to slash EV prices with generous deals. The Kia EV9 and several Genesis EVs are now $7,500 off with new discount offers.

Kia and Genesis are offering significant EV discounts

Genesis is rapidly expanding in the US, outpacing most luxury brands with sleek all-electric vehicles. The brand launched its first EV in the US, the EV60, in May 2022, and sales have been soaring since.

Since then, the brand has added the Electrified GV70 SUV and G80 sedan to its EV lineup. As one of the first automakers to commit to an all-electric future, Genesis is already seeing the results.

According to Cox Automotive , Genesis sold 6,403 electric vehicles in the US last year, showing 283% growth over 2022. That’s more than Lexus and Lucid.

On the other hand, Kia is looking to revamp sales with a new design and branding. The automaker introduced its first three-row electric SUV, the EV9, which landed in the US late last year.

Starting under $55,000 (excluding destination), Kia calls the EV9’s starting price a “wake-up call” to the industry. The EV9 is already seeing demand, with over 4,000 units sold through the first three months of 2024.

Although Kia expects the EV9 will qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, it may not be until next year.

Kia is shipping the EV9 from Korea until production begins (expected next month) at its West Point, GA, plant.

Until then, Kia is offering a $7,500 rebate on EV9 purchases to level the playing field. With that, the 2024 Kia EV9 can be bought for as low as $48,895, including destination.

Kia isn’t the only one offering big rebates. Genesis is slashing EV prices with a $7,500 rebate of its own.

The 2024 Genesis GV60 and GV70 Electrified are now eligible for $7,500 in Retail Bonus Cash. And that’s for purchase, not a lease. According to online auto research firm CarsDirect , this is the largest incentive for these models to date.

With the discount, the cheapest GV60 price starts at just $45,850 (including destination), while the GV70 Electrified starts at $60,300.

Although the 2024 G80 Electrified is not eligible, Genesis did add a new entry-level Advanced trim with prices starting at $5,380 less than the previous model year.

The price cuts come as many automakers, including BMW, Tesla, Hyundai, Ford, and several others, are making the same move.
