Slovenia is a beautiful destination no matter what time of the year it is, and every season has its attractions. While the coast heats up over summer, the Julian Alps continue to experience more moderate temperatures. In winter, snow falls over the mountains and can get very cold, but the lowlands and coastal areas of the south enjoy much milder weather. Spring sees bursts of wildflowers through the alpine meadows and autumn brings gorgeous reds and oranges.

Geography and environment

Squeezed between   Austria ,   Italy ,   Hungary   and   Croatia , Slovenia is covered in snow-dusted peaks, mountain meadows and alpine lakes. The Julian Alps dominate the landscape in the north. Further south the limestone Karst hides intricate networks of caves. Slovenia’s Adriatic coastline leads into Croatia.

Get the legs pumping with a ride around Lake Bled, past 19th-century villas, grand hotels and the cliff-clinging castle. For some more two-wheeled adventures, head out to Vintgar Gorge.

This was a perfect mother-daughter trip at the right time of year to avoid crowds. All of our drivers and tour guides were awesome! The accommodations were likewise wonderful. Communication with our tour company was great and any last-minute changes were taken care of, so we had no worries. We had nearly daily contact from the company, whose staff checked in with us before and during our trip. Our itinerary had a good balance of planned activities and free time, with lots of good suggestions from our tour guides. The company worked cooperatively with us in planning and replanning our itinerary over the course of nearly nine months! So flexible! This is the fourth trip we've booked with a Zicasso travel agent and it was another success. We worked with our travel team and could not be happier with the experience. We had originally planned a Croatia-only trip, but expanded it to include Slovenia and day trips to Bosnia Herzegovina (BH) and Montenegro. These were areas we had no experience with and relied on our travel team's recommendations. There are several aspects to a successful trip: locations, hotels, activities, and organization, and all were well planned. First, we are so glad we added the three countries, especially Slovenia, which was spectacular. Every hotel was great and in line with what we like. In addition, the room choices were good, with upgrades to suites and rooms with views and great balconies. Ours was a two-week trip with activities scheduled for almost every day, including guides and five wine tastings. Every guide was fantastic and the wine visits amazing. We were especially surprised and delighted by the high-end and modern winery in Mostar, BH. The area’s wines are very good. Every aspect of the trip was organized. Our agent sent me 37 different vouchers for each of our hotels, drivers, guides, and activities. I can't recommend her enough.

Zicasso’s tour operator did an excellent job planning our trip! We planned a vacation to Italy and Switzerland and wanted to see as much as we could with our limited time off. Our tour company worked in nearly all of our requests, planning an itinerary involving five cities in 10 days. Each of the hotels was great and all activities and train transfers went smoothly. The agent from Zicasso’s travel partner helped me fashion a 16-day tour of Slovenia and Croatia. As requested, the activities were wide-ranging, from the usual city tours to adventurous excursions such as rafting, kayaking, biking, etc. There were many special events, such as truffle hunting, a cooking class, and wine/meal pairings. Cities, towns, and countryside were mixed in. The places we visited were beautiful and scenic, including national parks, caverns, and hiking in the mountains. The hotels were excellent and the guides and drivers were professional and knowledgeable. Our trip had everything. Our agent definitely knows her business and provided five-star service. She was available 24/7 and very prompt in responding to our needs and questions. When in Split, her home base, she came to the hotel to meet us in person, which was a nice touch. I would strongly recommend her and her agency.

National Museum of Slovenia

Housed in a neo-Renaissance palace dating back to 1885, the National Museum of Slovenia features an impressive collection of cultural treasures. Among their prehistoric exhibition, you’ll find a 60,000 year old Neanderthal flute, thought to be the world's oldest musical instrument, while their Roman collection includes thousands of statues, paintings and stone monuments.

Slovenian Museum of Natural History

The Slovenian Museum of Natural History houses global collections showcasing the world’s biodiversity, including one of Europe’s best-preserved woolly mammoth skeletons. Set in the same building as the National Museum of Slovenia, the Museum of Natural History is the oldest cultural and scientific institution in Slovenia.

Slovenian Ethnographic Museum

With ethnographic collections dating back to 1821, the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum was established to showcase the traditional culture of Slovenia. It’s located in a former barracks complex in Ljubljana, and presents Slovenia’s heritage including traditional handicrafts, wisdom and skills such as weaving, pottery, blacksmithing, beekeeping and glass-painting.

Kranjska Klobasa (Carniolan sausage)

Also known as the Carniolan sausage, Kranjska Klobasa is one of Slovenia’s most popular culinary specialties. A smoked and cured sausage, made from a blend of pork and bacon cooked inside pig’s intestine, Slovenians have been eating this delicacy since the 19th century, and there’s a Kranjska sausage festival held each year.

A festive pastry made with rolled paper-thin dough, Potica is Slovenia’s most famous dessert. It’s baked in a special potica baking mould called potičnik, and most often filled with walnut, poppy seeds, pumpkin seeds, tarragon or hazelnut. There are more than 80 known fillings including salted ones with bacon.

Prekmurska gibanica (Prekmurian Layer Cake)

A delicious combination of cake and pastry, Prekmurska gibanica is a national specialty of Slovenia and one of the country’s most loved desserts. The pastry layers are filled with apples, walnuts, poppy seeds and cottage cheese, and are often topped with a dollop of sour cream.

The General Terms and Conditions determine the conditions and manner of using the Slovenian Tourist Board’s Media Library services. In the Media Library, users have at their disposal high-resolution photos and audio-visual recordings of the products and services offered by Slovenian tourism, which are to be used solely for non-commercial purposes as defined below.

General rules of application

Registration is required to use the Media Library’s services. Registration is available to any legal entity in the Republic of Slovenia and abroad, regardless of their legal form, whose activities involve marketing, promoting and presenting Slovenia as a tourist destination .

Photos and audio-visual recordings (hereafter: materials) may be used free of charge for all non-commercial publications that constitute promotion of Slovenia as a tourist destination, abroad or in the Republic of Slovenia , in accordance with these General Terms and Conditions.

The right to use the materials is not limited in terms of time or place (the use is permitted in Slovenia and other countries) unless a restriction relating to location and duration of use is specifically provided for an individual item of material .

The Slovenian Tourist Board reserves the right to revoke a user’s right to use certain materials at any time.

The rights acquired based on these General Terms and Conditions may not be transferred to third parties.

Citing the source and authorship

Photos and audio-visual recordings may only be used with consistent citation of author/co-authors and source: www.slovenia.info .

Rights of use

A registered user of the Media Library shall obtain the following non-exclusive economic rights to use the downloaded photos and audio-visual recordings:

• the right of reproduction and distribution,
• the right of making available to the public,
• the right of public presentation,
• the right of including photos in other copyright work.

The above rights refer to all forms of non-commercial and free-of-charge online posts, print media, audio-visual media services and other communication channels, regardless of the type of media (print, digital), which includes:

• Digital catalogues, e-magazines, newsletters (solely for the purposes of free distribution);
• Publication in print and other media that report on the Slovenian tourism products and services or promote Slovenia as a tourist destination;
• Use on social media as part of organic posts (reporting on an event, press releases (solely unpaid posts);
• Printed promotional materials, prospectuses, leaflets, brochures (solely for the purposes of free distribution);
• Promotional events in the Republic of Slovenia and abroad (e.g., tourism fairs, exchanges, workshops, presentations, etc.) that are exclusively or predominantly intended to promote Slovenia as a tourist destination.

The above forms of use include solely a free-of-charge form of using materials for the purposes of promoting tourism activities and services in the Republic of Slovenia or presenting Slovenia as a tourist destination.

Prohibited forms of using materials/commercial use of materials

Using materials for commercial purposes , such as reproduction on postcards, T-shirts, books, magnets, embedding audio-visual inserts in one’s own promotional materials, all forms of external advertising (stationary billboards, digital advertising, etc.), use in advertisements unrelated to the promotion of Slovenia as a tourist destination, use on websites that are not intended to present Slovenian tourism products and services and similar activities, is not included in these General Terms and Conditions and is prohibited .

It is strictly prohibited to use materials on media and distribution channels that are marketed or sold to users (books, school textbooks, other commercial publishing, calendars, postcards, fast-moving consumer goods (clothes and other products), advertising of non-tourism products and services, reproduction of materials on vehicles, etc.).

Audio-visual materials (video)

Using audio-visual materials is allowed only in the unchanged form available in the Media Library . Transformations, adaptations, clips, embeddings, and instances of using individual shots in one’s own audio-visual works, even if intended for promotional purposes, is prohibited.

Breaches of General Terms and Conditions

Any breach of economic and/or moral rights of the authors of photographs or audio-visual recordings may constitute a criminal offence and may result in substantive and damage liability of the user.

The entity breaching copyright pertaining to the material shall reimburse the Slovenian Tourist Board for all the damage incurred to it due to the breach of rights.

The Slovenian Tourist Board shall not be liable for any use of photos and video recordings that is contrary to these rules. The user of the material shall be entirely responsible for the content and manner of use.

General provisions

These Media Library General Terms and Conditions shall apply for all instances of using the material unless the Slovenian Tourist Board and user agree on special terms of using the material in advance and in writing for a specific instance of using the material.

These General Terms and Conditions shall be subject to occasional amendments. Upon the user’s publication of the material, the version of the General Terms and Conditions that is current at that particular time shall apply for the use of materials. If the user disagrees with the amendments made to these General Terms and Conditions, they shall immediately cease using the material and remove it from all media and other communication channels.

Slovenia starts negotiations for full membership in the European Space Agency

Full membership in the ESA is one of the Government's priorities. On this basis, the Slovenian delegation will negotiate with the ESA next month on the content of the Agreement and the conditions of full membership. After the negotiations conclude, by signing and ratifying the Agreement, Slovenia will accede to the Convention for the Establishment of the ESA, which is the basis for full membership of the Republic of Slovenia in the ESA. The signing of this Agreement means that Slovenia will upgrade its membership in this international organisation from associate to full member status.

About full membership in the European Space Agency

Full membership in the ESA brings many advantages for Slovenia, including opportunities to participate in programmes in which the Slovenian space industry has not been able to participate so far (Basic Technology Research Programme and Science Programme), thereby demonstrating the maturity of this industry sector in Slovenia. At the same time, membership also opens the door to cooperation with companies of the ESA member states and other countries, including for commercial projects. It also enables equal participation with other ESA member states in making key decisions. It means a recognition that Slovenia meets the demanding criteria for full membership set by the ESA and greater recognisability of Slovenia in the world as an increasingly important player in the international space industry.

Slovenia's full membership in the ESA brings financial obligations from 2025 onwards, specifically in the form of a one-off amount in 2025 (this amount is subject to negotiation), and an increase in annual contributions to the mandatory ESA programmes in the amount of approximately EUR 1.7 million per year. This will replace the current membership fee of up to EUR 500,000 per year. Payments into optional ESA programmes, including the Requesting Party Activities (RPA), remain unchanged until 2025.

Slovenia's cooperation with the European Space Agency

Slovenia has been cooperating with the European Space Agency (ESA) since 2009, when it signed a Plan for European Cooperating States (PECS) with the ESA. In 2016, it upgraded this cooperation by signing the Association Agreement, thus becoming an associate member of the ESA. In 2020, Slovenia signed the Enhanced Association Agreement, which expires in December 2024. This agreement opened up new cooperation opportunities for Slovenia, including an invitation to tender intended only for Slovenian stakeholders (Requesting Party Activity - RPA) to prepare themselves as thoroughly as possible for closer cooperation with the ESA.

The 2020 Association Agreement enables Slovenia, after the transitional period, to apply for full membership when it fulfils the following criteria:

• a sufficient geographical return of funds (coefficient of return of at least 0.85),
• a proportion of contracts with companies relative to contracts with institutions greater than or at least equal to 0.75%,
• a published national space strategy.

An additional criterion is a seven-year period during which the candidate country has a signed Association Agreement.

At the 2023 Space Summit at the ministerial level on 6 and 7 November 2023, the head of the Slovenian delegation, State Secretary Matevž Frangež, handed over a letter to ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher expressing the intention of the Republic of Slovenia for the ESA to begin the procedure of reviewing Slovenia's readiness to accede to the Convention for the Establishment of the ESA.

After being notified of this intention, the ESA began preparing a review of Slovenia for full membership. After preliminary discussion at key committees, the report was discussed at the ESA Council on 27 March 2024. The ESA Council adopted a decision on consent in principle to the accession of Slovenia to the Convention for the Establishment of the ESA, subject to the successful conclusion of negotiations on the Agreement between the ESA and the Republic of Slovenia regarding the accession of the Republic of Slovenia to the Convention for the Establishment of the ESA and related conditions.

Slovenian space industry

In recent years, Slovenia has managed to build a promising space industry consisting of more than 40 small and medium-sized companies and including development and research institutions and cooperation with various institutions and universities. These have managed to take a leading role in niche areas of the space industry, especially in Earth observation and the development of certain innovative technologies and new materials.

Slovenian companies in the space industry are a promising breakthrough ecosystem in the field of innovation and activities in space and with possible applications on Earth. Three Slovenian satellites in orbit are an important technological achievement.

A Slovenian company has developed key competences in the field of services further down the satellite data processing chain. In the field of test equipment, a Slovenian company has already secured a position as one of the most important players on the market. Slovenian industry is also achieving prominence in the field of miniaturised satellite hardware.

One of the research centres of the European Space Agency has been established in Planica, as a result of the activities of the Jožef Stefan Institute in research that simulates the adaptation of physiological systems to weightlessness (bedrest studies). One of only three human centrifuges of the European Space Agency is also available at the centre for research purposes.

The Slovenian space industry also consists of companies that manufacture miniature cooling systems, high-speed data devices, high-tech mobile structures, advanced communication systems, robotic structures and magnets, and companies with the ability to process large data systems and 3D printing of innovative materials.

However, cooperation with the European Space Agency is not limited to companies in the space industry. Companies that develop innovative technologies and products but are not usually active in space exploration (e.g. innovative propulsion systems, sensors, electronics, 3D printing, robotics, etc.), can also participate.
